Back to one-on-one with D.P.
Sponsored by the Downtown Lincoln Foundation on 93-7 the ticket.
Another great hour with Coach Del Margrove, Gros, Husker, Women's Tennis.
Yeah, Bach, I'll bring you into this one because we're going to ask coach a question,
but we were just getting some behind the scenes.
Did you have any idea?
That's how the women's tennis title is handled out team versus individuals?
Not before Coach Demoggrove started coming in, but I, you know, looking into it, I had seen that they, it is a, and he's talking about it, it's a year round type of sport right now.
It is.
So, so explain to folks titles, tournaments, championships, the season, team, and then individual.
Yeah, so for all Division I men and women's, we used to have the team and individual championships.
We're all in the spring towards in May, you know, at the end of the season, basically.
the last two years they did a pilot to to move the individuals championships to the fall so the fall became more of just like a it was all the individual anyways but they decided to just like make it all individual and then the end of the fall is singles and doubles and so ways and then in the spring just focusing all on just team so it's all team from january all the way to may and then you end it with a team championship so it's been a pilot that for two years and i think it's a mixed feelings some teams coaches really like it and some other
don't like it at all and they kind of want to go back to where it used to be.
I'm in between, to be honest.
Between kind of like, I think our sport has a good purpose of making it, you know, a separation
because it is such an individual sport and then, but at the same time we play as a team.
So I think it makes sense in some areas to separate him and have like an all individual in the fall.
So you do different sectional regional tournaments to kind of like qualify for different events
to see who qualifies for the end of the A
I think our path to get to the end of lays
is still a little messy
so we'll still need to figure out some things
how to arrive to the end of lay championship
and then in the spring you kind of focus on team
you know so start in January
you know mid-January early January you start
and you play a bunch of matches and then
Enzoblee starts in May you know and they go through the end of May
so in some areas I think it makes sense
to our sport to have you know two separate kind of seasons
At the same time, I think the way ranking works, the way the kind of selection works,
I think when it was in May, you have kind of the whole year of work, a body of work,
to kind of decide who are the best players are.
And then this way in the fall, if a freshman arise in the fall, then you only have about two and
half, three months to decide, you know?
And then sometimes, you know, it's a little trickier, you know, to get those best players
qualify for individuals.
But I think some of the ranking will carry over if they're returners.
You know, so if you have a really good, really good spring, then when you start in the fall,
then you can have a little more a priority for some events that will qualify you potentially.
But then you have to go out and perform.
So it's a, you know, it's an ever-working process on tennis.
I think we're trying to figure out what's the best solution.
And to be honest, that nobody has all the answers.
It's always a back and forth between kind of what works for some, doesn't work for others and vice versa.
That's college sports.
We have 60 seconds.
Coach, let me ask you the question.
Tell the folks, what's up next for Huskers women's tennis?
Yeah, we go on the road to Kansas, to Lawrence, Kansas this Friday.
We'll live Thursday.
Play Friday night.
They're a great program.
They have a really good team, really deep.
And then on Sunday, we're at home, play North Dakota at 1 p.m.
And then UMKC, 5 p.m. Sunday, a double header.
So get to watch us at home twice on Sunday.
So again, concessions will be open every home match.
So some snacks and adult beverages as well.
So that was fun.
And then, yeah, we're excited to get competing again.
So looking forward to it.
Coach, once again, thank you for making time for us
and share your wisdom and knowledge and your person with Husker fans all over the place.
Well, thanks for having us.
Thanks for having me and giving us a voice here.
so I appreciate you and all your support.
