Back to one-on-one with D.P.
Sponsored by the Downtown Lincoln Foundation on 93-7 the ticket.
Wheel me home.
It's necessary.
DP with a real limp, a two-sided left, no less.
No minusse in the right knee and very little in the left,
and it's a problem right now.
They do not want to do replacement.
They're like, no, you're too strong.
Don't need to do that.
Although the people with knee placements will tell you it was a great deal.
Like it was a good move.
But I don't want anything replaced, man.
I want the original parts.
I want the original parts.
It's like having a classic car.
I will take the old system.
I don't need for it to run.
I don't need for it to drive 80.
I need for it to work every day. That's what I don't I don't want I don't want new parts like I have
cadaver parts in me. Uh, you know, I got a new filter, bro. Okay. Um, but I'd like to keep
the same tires if possible. Um, same steer will please, uh, uh, and, uh, and, uh, and, uh, and,
If I don't have to change the windshield, cool.
So we'll see.
We'll find out.
But he, he, he, he, he, on the phone call, he's just like, yeah, there's four long needles in your future.
Straighten to the knee, kind sir, straight.
Well, not really straight into the knee because they need angles and they need to move it around a little bit.
Yeah, Bach, your facial expression was mine.
I do not like needle.
Oh, bruh.
These are, and these are four,
four needle needles.
These are weapons, bro.
These needles are weapons.
Oh, man.
Oh, yeah.
So we'll see.
We'll see.
Yeah, no, Eric,
the titanium pieces of the titanium back was definitely an upgrade.
Like, I have cadaver parts in my spine.
So, like, and I've got pins and screws and plates.
Like, I've got the full shebang and bang.
Necessary because it wouldn't have,
wouldn't have worked.
And the rehab for that sucked.
Capital letters.
That's no point O, Bach.
No point.
So I get that.
But the knees, the bicep, the back, the shoulder, the feet, the hand, the fingers.
Like, listen, I, I have.
as many original parts as possible,
I do not want to concede
the knees or hip.
Because that would,
it's like you're faking it.
Bach.
Bach.
No. I don't know. Whatever they
have, let shots, whatever that takes, I would
say. Well,
but it's the shots
and I can feel bad for
three days.
Or the surgery, which is a
full three week recovery or at least, right? And I don't know, especially timing now.
We're in football season. Not that we ever have really an offseason here at the ticket,
going into volleyball, because it used to be, oh, it's football season. Well, no, not football and
volleyball season. Oh, it's football, volleyball, and wrestling season. Hey, here come the Sweet
16 Husker basketball program. And the N.C.
AA women's program. Hey, you don't have time. You don't have time. Jim and Lucas says,
I restore classic cards. They always need new parts. I know. It just means I don't have to like it.
I don't like it. What I raised, I had the needles in my knee. I remember a doctor laughing and I asked what was so funny.
It's funny seeing you not be able to deny it hurts. That is so much gospel.
Ray, that is so much
gospel in what you just said.
It's funny seeing you not
be able to deny that it hurts.
Because, so you know, like the
little shop of horrors, Bach, have you seen that?
Yeah. Right? So the scene was Steve Martin.
I've seen it before. I don't know.
Steve Martin is the dentist.
And Bill Murray
as the patient who loves pain
and Steve Martin's the dentist who loves
giving pain.
That's what it felt like.
With that doctor looked at me, he's like,
ready
I'm like, did your voice just drop?
What?
Wait a minute.
You're not supposed to enjoy this.
I'm not supposed to,
but I do.
Jerk.
Jerk.
It's a real thing, right?
Like, it just, oh my goodness.
The other bill says this,
DP, I'm a season's experience.
Medicare agent, including my father. I always encourage you to do the surgeries.
As soon as allowed, we'll do not give excuses. This is what losers do. Get the surgery
done. Return your quality of life and move on. I have a pretty good quality life.
As a matter of fact, most of my friends by age are like, bro, slow to out. You're making us look
bad. Like you're everywhere all the time. Bach, I'm pretty active, pretty. Oh, yeah.
just when it hits, it hits.
And this hit.
Like it was,
I looked at Becky and I was just like,
this isn't good.
This isn't good.
So I,
if I tell you I'm in pain,
yeah.
It's some,
it's some serious stuff.
And stuff is not the word I want to use.
stuff is not the way it starts with the same letter but that is not it's not the word i want to use
uh crowby says i tore my shoulder up my shoulder pitching in college got it scope thinking it was
going to be a procedure uh he he did it was rubber band and stuff together and sent me home to
heel yeah it it really is like the thing that you need to uh to go through web blanket you're
hilarious says maybe you can do it in the spring when baseball is hosting regionals softball is playing
in the World College World Series.
And SIP is in California
watching a 16-year-old throw football gets air.
I would imagine that by then,
that 16-year-old may be here in Lincoln throwing against there.
I'll say, what is there in this, the SBs, right?
There's that week where there's no sports, but there's like three days.
Do all your healing then.
All of it three days.
Get it all in, bro.
Get it all in three days.
Yeah, Eric, some serious.
I'm serious is.
Yeah, it's there.
We'll figure it out.
We'll figure it out.
Because they said, you want to do it tomorrow's like, well, Friday.
Because tomorrow's everything, right?
Tomorrow's everything, everything, everything.
Volleyball is tomorrow, first home game of the home match of the other season.
You know, there's that.
Then there's the NFL.
Then there's tennis is soccer's home.
tennis has a match
coming back with a fact, Hermann DeMago
from women's tennis will join us at
1.30.
So there's plenty going on Friday
and then we have high school football.
And there was a thing
that happened
I had said I was
going to stay away from high school football
as much as possible.
But
teammates
is a big part of my
being, my core, and they've
done some amazing things with us.
So shout out to Jim Bennett and the Lincoln teammates.
And then Ashton,
and the folks from teammates national.
I've been a teammate mentor for the last four years.
There was a young man.
When I went through the process,
because I said, okay, I have to put my money over my mouth is.
I can't say that mentoring matters and then not mentor.
And so I went through the process and then they said, okay, you're ready.
Now, do you have a preference?
Is there a type of person you want?
And I said, here's the thing.
If it's in Lincoln proper, tell me who, what young person has been waiting the longest for a match?
And they said, we have, we know exactly who it is.
and there was a young man he was in middle school
he'd been waiting for a teammate match
we met up
basically he was a mini-me
at the time he thought he was a basketball player
he has evolved
he thought he was a football player then he found out
he was actually a wrestler
little guy
not a little guy just he's 100
30 pounds.
Going through his process,
this season,
or last spring he told me that
his friends were trying to convince him
to play football.
And
we talked about it.
We talked about it and the value of what it would
mean to him as a college,
to be college athlete that probably
multitasking isn't a terrible thing.
But his team,
his friends needed an additional teammate.
They needed somebody else to help.
So he decided he was going to play football this year.
And so he did.
And we had our first meetup last week.
And at the meetup,
he's telling me,
like he's,
it's a table of football players,
right?
And they're just hanging around,
telling me what their college plans were,
what their questions were,
what their fears were.
And he tells me,
you know,
I said,
are you going to get some play this year?
You know,
you guys are supposed to be
pretty,
good, your playoff team. And he goes, yeah, yeah, on offense and defense, I'll get some play
and say, what do you play on offense? Like, you're a wrestler. I figured you're a linebacker,
you know, even a small linebacker. And he says, yeah, some tailback. And I was like, look at you.
Okay, look at you. And he says, I think I'm going to get some run this week. And I do,
I, Bach, I kind of lean my head to the side. Okay. He goes, I think I can get you one.
I think you can get you one.
And I said, well, by happenstance, we're calling your game Friday.
So, you know, if you can get one, I'll call it.
I'll call it.
Well, Friday night, second half, they're doing well.
And he gets in the game at tailback.
Now, he's playing special teams in the lineback of the whole time.
but he gets in the tailback.
And, you know, I noticed him back there, and he gets a run,
and I think he gains a couple yards.
And I'm, I'm clapping while we're calling the game, but I'm not saying it.
And then I say that there's a full thing in play,
because for full transparency sake,
that as we call the game and I should be, you know,
I should be in the middle, Vach, I should be unaffected.
Yeah.
I have to say, look, I'm rooting for this kid.
I'm rooting for this kid.
And I told the story that he said, you know,
this is why he's playing and why it matters
and why in the teammates' perspective,
why we should do what we do.
We should be there for these young people.
Because we can make a difference,
and they make a difference for us,
and they make us connected to it.
Again, I care a little bit more about what was going on
because I know more.
and his first carry a couple of yards,
and they put him back in.
And Bach, they hand him the ball,
and I kind of lost it.
Because I saw it.
Like, I saw this thing happen.
I saw him get the hand up,
and my eyes do what a coach does.
I check all the boxes for what needs to happen
for this play to work.
And I'm checking the boxes.
And in the call,
Bach, I went totally,
off script and I went, get there.
Because I could see it, I can see it happening.
I think they put the call in the system.
Can you, can you?
Let me look.
And I had to apologize because I wasn't unbiased anymore.
And I really was trying to.
to stay in the middle,
but the reality was
I got captured in the moment.
So here's what I'm going to do.
I'm going to have them find that moment
because it was
it was the highlight of my week.
Again, I watched the Huskers in Wrigley.
I watched the Huskers.
I watched the Huskers volleyball team play in South Carolina.
I watched the Huskers win, put up 49 points at Memorial.
I watched a lot of things last week.
But I don't think I watched anything as meaningful as what I watched Friday night at Seacrest.
So it was a beautiful thing to watch.
and in telling the story,
Bach would say,
can you find it?
I can find it.
Just give me a second here.
Yeah, yeah.
Well, here's what we're doing.
We'll take the break.
And when we come back,
we'll relive the moment.
We'll relive the moment.
And again,
shout out to Lincoln teammates
and the teammates national folks.
Shout out to young J. Ron Lott.
It was a special thing.
We'll recapture the moment when we come back to one-on-one.
