Starting point is 00:00:00 You're listening to One-on-One with DP. Brought to by Canopy Street Market on 93-7 The Ticket and the Ticketfm.com. Welcome back one-on-one. Appreciate you all. I'm from the text, and I'll read these here. Texas says, I'm going to be a traditionalist until we win a big game wearing an alternate suit. Say it again. I think a caller is still on a few.
Starting point is 00:00:28 Oh, well, let's let's. see William has been patient. Let's see if William is still there. William, how are you doing this morning? Good. Good morning. It's great. What's on your mind? And thank you for being patient. Oh, excellent. Yeah. No, I was just going to chime in on the, what's they call the ground rule double, but I think it came and passed. So it is what it is. But hey, you're out throughout the whole series, the ball bounce sometimes in the Dodgers way, sometimes in the Blue Jays way. So at the end, at all evens out. It really does.
Starting point is 00:00:59 I'm going to the game this Saturday for the UCLA game in Pasadena's going to be awesome. And what I'm expecting to see is for TJ to be ready, the coach for coach for rule to have everyone ready. I mean, he did get a two year extension to get the guys ready, not to like lose, you know. And I'm hoping that we are feel the heck out of UCLA. I can't wait to see TJ take off. and dunk little dump passes. I just want to see it as an athletic ability
Starting point is 00:01:29 and maybe not put too much pressure on the line. I'm excited for that game and just what's the EU. Go big red. Go big red. Yeah, I think it's fascinating. For those folks from Orange County and I have friends that are out there and some coaches that are out there, and they talk about TJ with a high level of respect and the playmaking ability. As a matter of statement, somebody compared him to a former Husker
Starting point is 00:01:55 who did not play quarterback here. They compared him to Bryce Matthews tonight. That sort of athletic ability, that size, that sort of decision-making. RPO game for a true freshman quarterback in his first start, again, it could be perfect. He could be built for it. I think there's comfort and playing in front of your people.
Starting point is 00:02:22 There's additional pressures and stress of dealing with ticket requests because now all his homies are going to want to be there. Matt Ruhle talked about his time. That's a pretty good snippet from Matt Ruhl talking about his time at UCLA and that he's probably going to give away more tickets to Saturdays game at the Rose Bowl than he has any other game that he's coached at because he had people there and great time there. But he shared a great antidote about his time at UCLA. And to be fully honest, Bach, I don't know if you know this. I am an honorary UCLA Bruin for life. You've mentioned that before. You've, you've able to shop there pretty well. I am not allowed to spend money in their bookstore.
Starting point is 00:03:02 I can go in the bookstore and I can run up a tab and it doesn't matter. It is, it is in their computers there that all I have to do is give them my name and social security number. And I can grocery shop all I want. Took advantage of it twice. And Bach, there's some damage you could do in a bookstore. I just want to say, bravo of that. But of course, I'm a Husker. And so in that space, looking forward to this thing, big opportunity for win number seven,
Starting point is 00:03:31 because number seven opens doors. Harrison and I spent some time last night going through the bowl opportunities and those bowl partnerships. And the clarity behind that the old system for Big Ten bowls, in quotes, that there's seven with prominent agreements in place to take the next ranked, highest ranked Big Ten bowl eligible. team. But with the additional space in the college football playoffs from Big Ten teams, that we could safely say we imagine three Big Ten teams making the playoffs, maybe four. If that number is three, then that means that those top three bowls that hold power and balance with the Big Ten teams four through six. Now slide up spots.
Starting point is 00:04:27 that I would think that the number seven bowl would be pinstripe. Bach, is that fair? Yeah, I don't know the exact order, but I'll look it up, but close, right? Somewhere around there and hopefully not again. But with a win, so instead of going to New York City the day after Christmas, for football, anyway, being in New York for Christmas is always great, but to sit at Yankee's stadium and watch a football game and sleep and sludge is not exactly my ideal party. With a win, they have the choice of playing indoors in Detroit or in Phoenix.
Starting point is 00:05:08 And you go, wait a minute. And then with two wins, you start talking to Vegas and Orlando and Tampa. Right? So if four teams make it, that means that the fifth, six, and seventh team, best team in the in the Big Ten get those prominent three bowls. We've talked about Nebraska finishing in the top third of the Big Ten, right? If they win the rest of the games, they're in that space. I'm just going to speak for myself, but I would be much more appreciative if Nebraska wins at least two more of these regular season games
Starting point is 00:05:49 and go to a warm weather place like Orlando or Tampa. I'm just Vegas, maybe Vegas, indoors and Vegas. That wouldn't be terrible, right? Bach? Yeah, I mean, that would work. I know people from last year that said, hey, we're going bowling. We can't wait.
Starting point is 00:06:08 We've been waiting forever to go bowling as long as it's not New York. And then it was New York. Listen, I'm, again, I know that players are practicing meetings and class and coaches are at film study. But from all of us to all of you. Can you please win Saturday? so that we don't have to go to New York and freeze.
Starting point is 00:06:33 The temperature differential. So the average temperature, the day on the 27th of December in New York City is 33 degrees. If they win, they, hey, Bach, they can go to Phoenix. The average temperature is 69 degrees on that day. So there's seven bowls in play, right?
Starting point is 00:06:53 Citrus, citrus, which is Orlando, like you said, RlyQuest, Tampa, Las Vegas, Las Vegas, Music City, Nashville. I think people would like that. Pinstripe. That's the one we went to. People wouldn't love. Rate Bowl in Phoenix.
Starting point is 00:07:05 Yes. Game above sports in Detroit, Michigan. Yeah. If you win Saturday, you're at least, at least you're going to Detroit. Yeah. And mind you,
Starting point is 00:07:14 the temperature is about the same, but the game's indoors. The games indoors. I believe that's again, I have to look it up. I think that's against a Macaparte. Yeah. Their projections are saying,
Starting point is 00:07:24 Ohio. Yeah. Ohio. It would be the only downside of that one. Right, right. But, down side you win that you end the season on a win indoors warm and cozy hopefully warm and cozy warm and cozy let some of these walk-ons get some action hey bro
Starting point is 00:07:41 get some action here but but again the possibility is that if you win you have a choice between Detroit and Phoenix which like the rate bowl you win to you win to you went to, then you're, now you're cooking in Crisco, because Tampa and Orlando are in play. Vegas, Orlando, Tampa. Oh, oh, please. Can we please? I mean, you just, you just signed a deal with it with an airline to fly direct from Lincoln to Orlando. Hey, Bob, it's not like the universe isn't paying attention.
Starting point is 00:08:19 And you better believe that the bull folks, a part of the consideration is travelability. and the likelihood that your fan base is going to show up in our town. We need our hotels filled. We need our restaurants busy. We need your people to come support this game. And now you have a deal in place to fly direct from Lincoln or Orlando. That airline would be super happy. Just going to say.
Starting point is 00:08:50 Just going to say. From the text of last year they said they don't send the same. Bigton team to the pinstrike bowl. Well, we were talking as well that a lot of projections had in Minnesota because apparently PJ Flex has made some statement that he doesn't mind going to New York City from Minneapolis. It's convenient for gopher fans to get from Minneapolis to New York City. So, hey, we could do that.
Starting point is 00:09:15 Teesburger says, I wish Nebraska held a ball game better than some places that have ball games. Yeah, but the weather, weather and being able to get to it. If there was a major football stadium in Omaha, that could possibly happen. But people want to fly in and to drive 55 minutes to get to the ball game. They don't want to do that. They don't want to do that. So, you know, a bowl game in Lincoln, Nebraska, the average temperature is 27 degrees.
Starting point is 00:09:43 Now, we're cool. We're cool. I think it'd be like the nuance of it would be cool. I don't know how well the tickets would sell, you know, two to three years into it. Mm-hmm. Yeah, Bach, it's the thing, right? Like, just in that. And then the business dealings, the agreements behind the, behind the curtain of corporations and their partners,
Starting point is 00:10:08 I would imagine that the new airline at Lincoln Airport has some say in that bowl, because that would be a part of the deal, is that we can get you, I don't know how many seats they would fly on a regular basis, but adding flight, to that more a day certainly is not out of the realm of possibility. So I'd be okay with a little post-Christmas Orlando action or Tampa or Tampa. That means the things have gone incredibly well. So there's that. Several things along the way.
Starting point is 00:10:51 And we're talking about the injury aspect of how you deal with things. I think coaches coaches make decisions to their personnel to their personality profile and there are people who are risk adverse there are people who are risk takers
Starting point is 00:11:09 who rather enjoy the risk and then there are those people who quite simply will follow the standard of business here's how we're doing this the fan base has a say-so they have a voice in how they want
Starting point is 00:11:23 their teams, their community to be represented. And toughness is a part of Nebraska athletics, not just football, right? I mean, even in football, and volleyball, toughness. Fred Hoyberg talks about toughness. Amy Williams talks about toughness. Will Bulls talks about being gritty. I mean, grit, grit is a part of Nebraska softball.
Starting point is 00:11:47 So we know that it's in play, but you have to be careful about how you present that. Because ultimately, sports is just the vehicle for the humans who play them, for the people who play them, and the people who coach them, and the people who manage them.
Starting point is 00:12:06 You have to be careful what you say about yourself because if you're not careful, other people will start to believe it. And you've got to be careful about how you take care of your young people. That is iconic in full. So we'll give you that. There was an incident. I don't know if folks have heard about it, but it landed with me.
Starting point is 00:12:27 Apparently, there was a high school party that went left this past weekend. And there are some conversations that need to be had between parents, educators, and our young people. In this particular case, again, a high school party, no parents present, which wouldn't be the first time. That's generally how that works. A group entered the party, changed the vibe of the party, set off an attack. There was a fight. The fight led to the brandishing of weapons of sorts.
Starting point is 00:13:10 In this particular case, knives. And we need to have conversations with the young people about several things. one, if you have the inclination to carry a weapon to a party, you probably shouldn't go to the party. And those conversations, we make an assumption that our young people are smart enough to know that and that they're brave enough to listen. But we need to have the conversation. You as a parent need to have the conversation with your child that if this happens, if you are ever in a place and we aren't as parents aren't present, here's what we would like for you to do.
Starting point is 00:13:54 here is the protocol we're going to put in place. For in a situation as such, here's how parents want their young people to react and respond. If your friend gets in a situation, do you help the friend? Is it wise to help the friend? Is it smart to help the friend? If you are with friends who are angry heading into a party, what should your reaction be?
Starting point is 00:14:19 Do you engage? Do you not engage? Should you just leave? A phrase that I've given to high school all over the country is this. Do I have your permission to tell you the truth? Because you want your child to tell you the truth about where they are, who they're with, and the situations that they find themselves in.
Starting point is 00:14:38 They should never be afraid to tell you. Hey, mom, dad, I was in a bad place. Here's what happened. So that you can have the conversation. You need your children to be able to tell you the truth. As parents, you need and have permission to tell your child the truth, that you may want to be with the cool kids,
Starting point is 00:15:00 or you may want to be at this party, or you may want to be in this place with these people. But the truth is, I need to give you rules of engagement so that you're protected. And if you're protected, the likelihood is that more people are protected. These are conversations that need to happen. Teachers, that when you find out about these things,
Starting point is 00:15:20 you should have permission to tell the truth, to the young person, to the parents, to the administration. Why? Teachable moments. Education moments. They happen. So if I give you nothing today, it is that. Do I have your permission to tell the truth so that you have the freedom
Starting point is 00:15:37 and you take the responsibility of having these tough conversations with your young people so that the situation like that, they will happen. We can't wish and pray them away. That's not how this works. But when they do happen, and if they happen around your young people, they have your voice in their head with a solid plan of safety and how they're going to engage. We'll close out one-on-one and such a up for Adam Caricker when we come back.
