Starting point is 00:00:01 Back to one-on-one with D.P. Sponsored by the Downtown Lincoln Foundation on 93-7 the ticket. Back to the text by window says, yeah, I do like this. Gus Mohawk. Says this, would Osborne's best team beat Sabin's best team? And the answer is yes. I think Osborne three best teams would, yeah. Yeah, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:00:39 I don't know whether Osborne's best teams would beat Sabin's best teams, but Osborne's teams are in the conversation for the best teams to ever play college football. And I don't think there's a huge bridge between 94 and 95 or 95 and 97, right? Because Bach would it be fair to say that the 97 Husker team was more experienced than the 95 Husker team? more depth than the 95 Oscar team like more familiar with the depth maybe I mean both are national champions so right obviously had what they needed in them but do the ears matter
Starting point is 00:01:25 yeah but their heart that's that's the difficult conversation in all of sports right is to try to cross the ears together yeah I I land with this and you can like what you like and you should right you like what you like. But I'm old enough to have been alive for the myth,
Starting point is 00:01:46 for the myths that existed, to see, you know, Proceding John Robinson at USC. You know, he'll be, you know, part of his, as we talked about with saving, part of his legacy tainted because of Tampa Bay, right, because he had some, you know, in John McKay, he had some bad years of Tampa Bay. So then how you do in the NFL, certainly you could write it off if you want,
Starting point is 00:02:12 but the reality is still exists. Bear never went into NFL. Procedure never went in NFL. There's some coaches that stayed college coaches, and the era has something to do with that as well, that it was just that late transition where guys were starting to go from prominent college programs to the NFL.
Starting point is 00:02:36 That wasn't always the case. I mean, you think about it, that the John Robinson's and company, you know, you kind of want to stay where you were. The Pete Carroll started to poke their head around the corner and see what kind of success they could have. But, Bach, what do you think is the tougher level to coach at? I think you have more. I think that the coaching matters more in college. The players matter more in the NFL, only because you're obviously rotating players. and now more so than ever.
Starting point is 00:03:11 So to extend like his streaks like that. So I kind of brought up the Phil Jackson example. Like, yes, he won with Michael Jordan and has 11 titles and Shaq and Kobe and all that. But I don't know if he would have won any of those that had he been on the, you know, I don't know, calves in the 90s or something. Well, but then you can get into those questions
Starting point is 00:03:32 like would Wilt have been as dominant in the Shaq era as Shaq? Right. or would Shaq be as dumb and as well was? It would have been a crime to have Shaq play in the I mean, there are people that are uniform that Tim Duncan would have been the same in every era, his level of greatness. Jordan would have been Jordan in every era. Shaq would have been Shaq in every year.
Starting point is 00:04:02 We tend to are able to kind of imagine it, going backwards, but maybe not going forward. Like I think Oscar Robinson would have been good in every era. I mean, we see some of that in the Westbrook, the Russell Westbrook case. I don't know time-wise how to measure things like that. I leave that to fans, and then you say, okay, this is how.
Starting point is 00:04:38 would feel about it, but then I would ask you, okay, so would Tommy Frazier be better now than he was that in today's college game? Again, that's similar to kind of like the Michael Jordan three point conversation. Well, that's why I'm asking you, but I'm just saying, like, I'm asking. I don't know. If he was not in an option offense, I think he probably would have developed his passing a little bit better. But could he play, could he play the game that he played then now? If he's a, if he's a mobile. quarterback because hey, Bach, the real pitch and sell now is that you've got a mobile quarterback. Around here. Yeah. Yeah. So, hey, this is a movie we've seen before for a variety of additions and episodes.
Starting point is 00:05:29 But would Tommy, and I think we have to kind of highlight that Tommy's leadership was as much a part of how good he was as anything else, right? Yeah. Right? The cerebral thing, the decision making in his ball handling, I'm not sure that anybody ever did that as well as Tommy Frazier, right? Right. And, I mean, again, you just go through it. Maybe he wouldn't be as good as now,
Starting point is 00:06:00 but you're talking about one of the best of all times. So it's like you're comparing him to try to reach that level of status. Mike Grozier. I think would translate. Running back is more easily translate, I think. Yeah. Right? I mean, we certainly think Irving Friar would,
Starting point is 00:06:15 would catch 80 balls now. Yeah. Maybe not at Nebraska. It's always the Joe Burrow argument. Well, he wouldn't have been Joe Burrow if he's at Nebraska. It's like, well, that says a lot more about Nebraska, doesn't it? Yeah, I just, I think that's it. If we said that Christian Peter, Jason Peter,
Starting point is 00:06:37 Grant Westram lined up in the techniques now that they would still be top first round draft pick. Oh, yeah. Right? I mean, that's kind of what we would land on their ability to play. Jay Foreman. Oh, yeah. I think his thing, I think Terrell Farley would have more success now because there are more
Starting point is 00:07:01 coaches and more programs that know what to do with the Terrell Farley talent. A smaller linebacker certainly as well. over the years. Right? I mean, he flex, right? You're able to move him around. It's another thing that comes into play. And then the question was always whether Coach Osborne would adapt or would the game adapt to him. Which do you think would be true? True or that the game would evolve to him or he would evolve to the game? I think that he would have probably evolved eventually. But again, I mean, you're talking about a few short years later, a Heisman trophy winning quarterback from the option offense playing in the national championship game.
Starting point is 00:07:38 Yes, it didn't, you know, it didn't end up winning that one, but that's how close they were, right? So I don't know if he would have had to adapt as much as people think. Is it fair to say that he was, it should have, the number should be five instead of three? Because of his office coordinator days? Well, no, because of his head as a head coach. Well, why should it be five?
Starting point is 00:08:00 Well, I would give him credit for 93 and 96. Or 83. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, he could have. Yeah. Yeah, definitely. Gus Mojawks says this.
Starting point is 00:08:11 Another detail that needs to be said about Osborne versus Sabin. Sabin is the CEO coach. It doesn't call plays. Osborne has five national championships calling the offensive plays at Nebraska. What's a you, Bach. I don't know how I've turned into the bad guy arguing against Tom Osborne. I said you're always, they have, they have dubbed you bad news. And you, you have to be aware of that.
Starting point is 00:08:34 Well, he's on my Mount Rushmore. And he's... Bok is a heel. Yeah, I am a heel, though, yeah. Naturally. Have we not accepted that Bach is a full-on heel? Any opportunity he gets... I think he's a Jesse Ventura heel and not...
Starting point is 00:08:51 You're not a malicious heel, but you are... You are a Jesse Ventura on the mic. Is that fair? That's fair. I'll take that. Yeah. Okay. I just want to be sure. I do think there is an argument when you go through those things,
Starting point is 00:09:07 especially the best team of all time, which was brought up earlier. I do think the 95 Huskers are up there. The 2020 Alabama team, also highly considered, undefeated. Maybe it could be in those conversations. LSU 2019 for sure. 01, Miami always put it up there.
Starting point is 00:09:23 That's why when those two great teams are put together from different programs, they needed to excel and then dominate in those eras for the era. for the era, which of those programs you just talked about won three out of four in their era? Nebraska. That's like to me,
Starting point is 00:09:45 that's a difference maker. Now, Alabama also did 2009 to 2012. Right? So three out of four. Right? So we have those. Is there anybody else that falls into that category of space where they won three out of four? You have to go back.
Starting point is 00:10:00 Were you dominant in your era? for that amount of time. Trying to think when you, yeah, you have to go back at time for that one. Well, that's, that's just it,
Starting point is 00:10:13 right? So that, that's the thing. All right. We'll go to break. We'll close it out and get you all set up, but when to war Wednesday, a Todd Euler,
Starting point is 00:10:20 black shirt. More coming up on the ticket.
