Starting point is 00:00:00 It's time to go one-on-one with D.P. Sponsored by the Downtown Lincoln Foundation on 93-7 the ticket. Hour number two, one-on-one, 402, 464-5-6-85, Bacomach and DP. We greet you two for two. Two for two. I'm George Breedian. Perfect. Perfect.
Starting point is 00:00:38 Two pitches, two swings, perfect. Bonds. Hitting bombs. Yeah, I think the Dan Housin thing is legit. Given any given night, WWE shows up at PBA, but 15,000 folks. Yeah, right?
Starting point is 00:01:03 That's a number. So if we said, and I would think the majority of those folks are Husker football fans too, right? Yeah, yeah. So if you said to those folks, hey, we're trying to remove the curse from Nebraska football. Dan Housen is the guy, 20 bucks each. Bach, or you make a donation, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:28 Right? I think Dan Housin here. Yeah, uncursing the Oscars, a cursing the opponents. Now, you know he would end up at studio, right? I would hope so. Because the studio has his colors, too. He already wears the colors. He's always in R.A. in red black.
Starting point is 00:01:46 But I think for Halloween should be the deal, right? That he comes and he curses. But I would do it, I would do it personally. I would do it before Ohio to just curse all Husker opponents. I think that's fair. What's 15,000 times 20? So 300,000, is that? 300,000?
Starting point is 00:02:10 Is that enough to get him here? It might be. that's enough to get Danhausen here you make the appearance for 300,000 I would think so there's zero chance he doesn't show over $30,000 like I say he's got to be careful though who is cursing and uncurston because he might be getting more of this thing not just Nebraska looking for Danhausen curse but of course but Bach Nebraska needs to get out of being settlers you need to be pioneers sometimes be first be first That's what made Nebraska great in the past.
Starting point is 00:02:46 He's going to curse somebody in college football. I promise you. He's going to curse somebody. You better get him on your side before somebody. Not that anybody has any need to curse Nebraska because they've done a pretty good job of doing it themselves. But to cross that over, right? Oh, he's going to show up on calls.
Starting point is 00:03:07 And Matt Ruhle is a Dan Housen fan. Coach Ruhl is a wrestling fan. He has got to be Team Dan Housen. Coach Rulhausen? Come on. Come on. I think the texture was right. Go big Redhausen.
Starting point is 00:03:26 This needs to be a campaign. This needs to happen. What? What is the, what could happen worse than what's happened? Right? I mean, come on. Raff, what say you?
Starting point is 00:03:46 He says, I've been to Devaney's grave multiple times. Count me in on Danhausen time. Yep, that's where I'm at. Mailman says he's got 20. Bill and Bennett says he's got 20. I just think that that should be the way. Which, Bach, if there, let's just say there's a player who is really good.
Starting point is 00:04:12 Once it comes to Nebraska, but he's got another option. How far in the future is GoFundMe for recruiting? Seriously. Not too far. Seriously. But how far? If we said 2028, you can now do a go fund mean for a recruiter. I'm surprised the recruit hasn't done that yet. Listen, if you said, if you put up a bar, if a high school, so take the top five star. And he says, I'm going to decide whatever school. puts the most in a Venmo, that's where I'm going to school.
Starting point is 00:04:58 We're not that far from it. Nebraska might win. Nebraska wins these online things. That's why I said it. That's literally, I said, put up a Venmo. Let's get Dan here. I'm not, I don't disagree.
Starting point is 00:05:13 John and Cortland, how are you doing it? It's not a good grief. Let's let these people be free. It's there. We were talking about tears. all time tears. And I think it's, again, Bach setting the rules for boxes that must be checked
Starting point is 00:05:36 to be considered amongst the great college football coaches ever. What say you, Bach? What boxes must be checked? Oh, man. Again, it's so interesting when you do that because I want to say national champions, and certain amount of championships, multiple championships.
Starting point is 00:05:58 I think it's hard to argue with those. But then at the same time, I wonder what Bill Snyder would have done if you ever got out of Manhattan or chose to, right? Not our fault. Yeah. Not our fault is just, you know, contextualizing that.
Starting point is 00:06:08 I don't know, you know, Frank Beamer, another one. I mean, those are guys that, they might not be in tier one, but golly, are they pretty darn good coaches. But no, I think, I think historically,
Starting point is 00:06:20 you know, when we talk about the Mount Rushmore of coaches, it is, it is dynasties. It is multiple national championship. There are, so here's the perspective. There are over 100 coaches who have won a national title. 100.
Starting point is 00:06:40 But when you turn this into multiple national championships, comes a different conversation, Bach. Different conversation. Right? Hell yeah. So is that, that where are you going to rest your hat i think part of it but i think too is like part of reason why tom osborne i think is is so highly regarding these conversations that is that
Starting point is 00:07:10 you've done it too at nebraska like it that's pretty difficult now he did inherit a pretty darn good program uh so that's got to be you know in there as well but um yeah i mean that's why i think it's it's hard to argue and people will you know to have different arguments but seven titles for nick saven i mean what seven titles for nick saven i mean what's Seven. Seven. That's ridiculous. Seven. Okay. So here's the list of multiple national titles by head coaches. Ready? And these are just the names. We'll let you filter and figure out who you want to put on your on your top tier. Right. But we would need the four coaches that here's here's what my standard would be.
Starting point is 00:07:57 four coaches that in order that you must name in order to tell the story of college football. Fair? Yeah. Fair? Okay. So Kirby Smart. Urban Meyer. Bud Wilkinson.
Starting point is 00:08:15 Darrell Royal. Tom Osborne. Barry Switzer. Newt Rockman. John McKay. Frank Leahy. Woody Hayes. Bernie Bierman.
Starting point is 00:08:25 Bear Bryant. Nick Sabin. Bob DeVay. Those are just several of the multiple win national championship football coaches. So Bach,
Starting point is 00:08:40 if an alien lands today and says, I am here to consume data on college football, human, tell me what four coaches must I learn, mimic, and copy to excel.
Starting point is 00:08:57 Jake Bachhoven, And kind, sir, the microphone is yours. Go! Well, I would start with what we just said, Nick Saban. I mean, the modern day seven-time champ. And get it at two places. Just amazing. Beyond that is how, and they are now, Alabama is like ranked outside the top 10 for the first time, free seasons, like 2008. That's when Saban started.
Starting point is 00:09:20 I mean, it is just incredible what he did there. Unfortunately, I don't have to get out of Tuscaloosa to say that Paul Bear. Brian deserves to be on this list. So, I mean, he would be another one. I would put Tom Osborne in there as well. And then that's where you kind of get interesting where you want to go. Five. John McKay at USC had four, Walter Camp. Again, trophies being named after you, certainly three for Urban Meyer. Newt Rockney. Again, every coach at some point is given his new Rockney speech. Right. Carrey, Switzer, Pop Warner, again, entire leagues being built. Bud Wilkinson and the dominant run. And mind you, no coach in the history of college football put together a streak like Bud Wilkinson.
Starting point is 00:10:12 Yeah, he's underrated in these. 47 straight wins. Can you imagine O'Sree if the Huskers went on a 47 game win streak? Fuck. Are there enough police in the state in the fine state of Nebraska? Are there enough police? Is there enough? Is there enough room in the
Starting point is 00:10:34 in the in the in the drunk tank? I don't know. Yeah. 47. Nebraska, by the way, was that end there, Bud Wilkinson's in 1959 on Halloween and did Bud Wilkinson's run.
Starting point is 00:10:50 I think it was like close to 47. I don't know what deck number was. 47 of a straight conference wins. Well, he loved. Well, yeah, the conference room wins is a different number. Those are crazy numbers that amongst those, right? And that streak, a 47 game win streak. Then you start to consider schemes, player development, program, longevity,
Starting point is 00:11:16 blue blood status. So, but four, Sabin, Bear, Osborne, who's number four? It's another point for Wilkinson, too, is he left Oklahoma when he was 47 years old. So he had some runway if he wanted to as well. But I think he got into the booth after that. So he was the voice.
Starting point is 00:11:40 I mean, you have to understand that he was the great professor for college football on ABC Saturdays. Like he told you everything. And then, of course, Darrell Royal came on. and they had another ball coach on there, right, which was pretty good stuff. But systems, right, running the wishbone, running the Y tackle 6, its own space.
Starting point is 00:12:04 You know, Notre Dame and Newt Rockley, and again, in the era that was Woody Hayes. Like, are we, have we figured out, like, what Ohio State's coaching pyramid looks like? is Woody's still the godfather? Is he still the top? I would think so. Woody over Urban.
Starting point is 00:12:29 Yeah. Really? I mean, like you said, he's got more titles. Woody over Urban. Urban won, what, two? Who's Michigan's goat? Schimbeckler. He never won a title.
Starting point is 00:12:49 But he is their goat, they seem. Yeah. Isn't that interesting? Like, that's just, who's Texas? Texas. I mean, it is Darryl. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:07 It's Royal. Who's Alabama's? That's the tough one, right? Who's Alabama? Probably the top two coaches of all time, but I'd say saving.
Starting point is 00:13:14 I'm not giving him top two. I, well, no, I refuse. Championships. Who has the most two championships? No,
Starting point is 00:13:22 because he won at LSU. So I, you know, I, he won six titles at Elfair. I, I'm not, I'm not,
Starting point is 00:13:28 I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not given them that. if you're Alabama, who's like coaching it Alabama, who's the icon? Well, Bear was first. He's got a lot of-
Starting point is 00:13:46 Vanney was first. Right. I think savings over-taking him. Oh! He's the best coach in my mind in college football history. Oh, really? In the era that he's, that he created an incredible new dynasty? Let me say this publicly and out loud.
Starting point is 00:14:06 Nick Saban was not a better football coach than Paul Bear Burn. He was not. He made, no, no, listen, you talk to me about championships and all the other stuff. But no,
Starting point is 00:14:17 sir, was he a better football coach? Because he did it with magic. Alabama did not have the best athletes in the country, man. They did not. Bear Bryant had to go get some brothers. I was that.
Starting point is 00:14:32 He didn't always have the most diverse locker. Right. Like there's a real thing. So I don't know. I don't know. Who was LSU's go? Man, LSU. They can win with any, throw it anybody back there. One with Ed Ordron and Les Miles. I mean, those are some characters. Like, I was asked the question about Urban and Steve Spurrier and who was the, the Florida icon. And I's like, oh, that's none of my business. That that is too tough of a conversation. That is tough one. Well, but Notre Dame's in the same boat because it's Newt Rockney or Lou Holtz or Air Procedon or
Starting point is 00:15:10 Fielding Yos, they keep going. Right, right, like that becomes a thing. The Ohio State thing's fascinating to me. But is Pat Fitzgerald Northwestern's best? I think so. Yikes. Because he didn't get him to the Rose Bowl.
Starting point is 00:15:34 No. Who got him to the Rose Bowl? I think is Randy Walker. Is that correct? You were all over Northwestern football. Yeah, like to tell me that you have to be careful about who you show people we are, because if you're Northwestern, you really got to do something to change the way people talk about. Is it Gary Barnett?
Starting point is 00:15:59 Gary Burnett. Wow. Right. Raff says Bear has kind of turned into a myth in Alabama. But Raff, you're a good person to ask that because you're down there. So you tell me, Freddod Horiburg says Nick Sabron lost every time he coached against Nebraska, which is, again, when you have goat, if somebody has your number, that's a real thing. He did that at Michigan State when Osborne was rolling.
Starting point is 00:16:25 No, but still. Rolling. How can you say that Nick Saban's the goat if he, if Tom Osborne paddled his backside? I give, give Nick Sabin Tom's roster that day. Switch rosters. It'd be, it'd be tough for that Michigan State. team to win. Are you telling me that if Tom Osborne was the coach with those Alabama rosters for the last 15 years that he wouldn't have won? I'm saying for the head to head.
Starting point is 00:16:49 You head to head. Did you tell him that he if Tom Osborne coach that they gave him all the resources they gave Alabama that only six titles would would happen. I don't know. It's a different era. If you had the playoffs back when Osborne was around, he would have been in just about every one of them. So they had a lot more opportunity. Oh. They're not the same coach. I'm a saving fan, but putting him at the top of this thing. Seven. Is it, I don't.
Starting point is 00:17:19 Seven modern day national title. I don't care. Well, he, listen, can we say why he won those seven? Sure. Right? We understand why that he paid players at the highest volume, at the highest level with the greatest frequency, when everybody else was supposed to tow the line.
Starting point is 00:17:40 You think Alabama was the only one that might have been playing? I didn't say they were the only one. I said they were the best at it. Oh, yeah. They were the best at it. If you tell me, I mean, I'm just saying that's crazy. That's crazy. Rapp says saving is the Tom Osborne of Bama.
Starting point is 00:18:04 I don't know, bro. I don't know. Yeah, cigar guy says, he goes, I'm 48. And to me, Ohio State football is the sweater vest. That's hilarious. That is a hilarious. Windows says it's Sabin hands down.
Starting point is 00:18:26 Gus Mohawk says, Bach, you're wrong on this one. If Coach Osborne coached after 60, he would have won at least three more titles. And I cannot disagree with that. Nick Saban won five of his titles after turning 60. That's the perspective that we're talking about. I do a bunch of what is.
Starting point is 00:18:42 like I said, Bud Wilkinson might have a much better argument. I mean, there's a lot of things that go on. But that's why for an old school guy, if you tell me that you're talking about goat coaches, I was like, I could tell you, like I had people who worked with Bud Wilkinson who would come and tell you about coaching with Bud Wilkinson. And it's a different run. Nobody had a 47 game win street. So
Starting point is 00:19:11 So Sabin's 47 game Winstreet if we're having that discussion If Sabin's the Alabama team's played The Big 8 in the 50s No they wouldn't They might have done pretty well
Starting point is 00:19:24 No they wouldn't have I mean he was on those rocks He was coaching at the time But again I even doing that I don't like to do the if this If that I'm not talking about ifs I'm talking about what happened What happened is Saban has seven titles
Starting point is 00:19:35 I'm cool with the evidence That's saying that people like Sabin and that he's this is college football. This isn't Bill Jack to get Michael Jordan. If he's an elite college coach, you get no debate for me that he belongs in the conversation. No debate. None whatsoever.
Starting point is 00:19:55 But when you say that he, are you saying he's a better coach or he had a better career than Bear Bryant? I mean, Bear Bryant is probably number two in all-time coaches. So it, Or number one. I mean, you can have arguments.
Starting point is 00:20:18 You know, it's not a definitive thing. But if you have the better career, I think it's hard to, I mean, you've kind of Who had a better career? Coach Osborne or coach Devaney. Coach Osborne. Right? What was Devaney's worst season? I think six and four.
Starting point is 00:20:36 Right? He had the one year, right? So then once he apex and the top of Devaney's career, right? what's what's his his seven year run his best what's divany's best seven year run i think i mean you include the championship so it'd be from 66 to 72 which would include two six and four seasons but all together um you're talking about uh nine and two with the sugar bowl appearance six and four six and four nine and two sun bowl win uh top 12 team 1970 11 oh and one that was the parts of the championship team 71 other championship team 13 and no and then the nine two and one year where they finished
Starting point is 00:21:18 ninth in the coaches fourth in the AP nine two and one yeah it with Johnny Rogers were in the high school that's that's that's a real okay so here's my point and and and Wendell says this look at Sabin's coaching tree oof that's the hell of coaching tree but see this this this this This is where this is where this is where you're the lack of of age
Starting point is 00:21:53 is show because nobody has Bear Bryant's coaching truth. So stop. It's a full run. It's a full run. That if you said that Howard Schnellenberger, who you still have to have the conversation as the goat
Starting point is 00:22:16 at Miami, even with Jimmy Johnson as part of the conversation, right? Right? Yeah. Okay. Gene Stallings, who came in and actually coached in Alabama and then went pro and coached. I mean, the Junction boy, think of the involvement and the effect of Texas A&M football because of Bear Bryant. Yes.
Starting point is 00:22:48 If you took Sabin and says, I'm going to give you LSU, Alabama, Georgia, because I have to consider Georgia's. a part of the saving coaching tree. But I'm not sure that Urban Meyer, Don Correel, there's a bunch of coaches who you can put under the coaching tree conversation and say they need to be considered or be giving more credit because of the coaching tree. If you want to say based all of this on career,
Starting point is 00:23:23 right, college career, that's one thing. but if you tell me you're you're considering him as a coach then show me what he did when he wasn't in his ideal situation if he was in several situations thing about coach coach iceborne we know him from Nebraska
Starting point is 00:23:40 a lot of coaches we can't have that discussion about Lou Holtz at Notre Dame his biggest issue is how poorly he did when he left there Nick Sabin there are places that he couldn't have gone back coached. Right? Like, you mean the NFL?
Starting point is 00:24:05 Yeah. NFL record wasn't as bad as it sounds, but it wasn't in his college level of success. Right. But I think at some point, somebody might have given Nick Saban another chance in the NFL if he wanted it. Facts are facts. Evidence is evidence.
Starting point is 00:24:24 You don't think Sabin's ever fielded an NFL call? Oh, absolutely. But that's the NFL problem. That's not a Nick Sabin. That's not a Nick Sabin. The NFL is. is a cut, copy, paste leave when it comes to coaches. And I know that.
Starting point is 00:24:37 That's fine. All right. We'll have the discussion. More coming one-on-one. We'll be right back. Download our app by searching 93.7, the ticket in your app store. You're listening to one-on-one with DP on 937 the ticket and the ticketfm.com.
