On 93-7 the ticket.
We are back here on one-on-one on 93-7.
The ticket, myself, Jake Fockerman and Nick Wyman in studio with you.
We talked a little bit about it earlier in the show with Rudy,
but I want to get your thoughts, Nick, here on the North Carolina job opening up
Hubert Davis, let go by the Tar Hills, of course, beat Coach K
and went to the national championship game, his first.
year, man, if they would have won that championship, it's hard to fire a guy years later,
even after what he's done. But they have not done well since then, at least by North Carolina
standards. They're not making deep runs in the NCAA tournament. So they decide to let him go.
And that opens up just one of the bigger jobs that there could be in college basketball.
Yeah, I say it is the biggest job in the market now. Just with North Carolina,
there might be going outside the Dean Smith family, the North Carolina family,
Hewere Davis, a former player there, played in the NBA for multiple seasons with the New York
Knicks and et cetera.
I'm curious where they go because they might be going out of that Dean Smith coaching
tree, that North Carolina family tie.
I do find interesting because the current athletic or Cunningham, he is stepping down
from his role as athletic director in July 1st for the new academic year,
the new collegiate year.
He's stepping down becoming a senior advisor while the assistant AD is basically becoming
the 80.
So I do find that interesting in that scenario about all that.
And there was a lot of statements put out by everybody.
they thanked Hubert for his time.
And it sounds like he wants to continue coaching.
So I mean, if a job opens up, he's for sure going to get it.
It's just, you know, he's in that UNC family, that Tar Hill family in Chapel Hill.
North Carolina is going to have to swing for the fences.
Like, they're going to have to hire a coach that may be coaching currently still in the NCAA tournament.
Or if they want to go elsewhere, I know some people throughout Brad Stevens, the former Boston Seltz coach, he coached Butler in the 2010, 2011, led the Bulldogs to championship games then with Gordon Hayward,
Sheldon Mack and company.
Billy Donovan, the current Chicago Bulls coach.
He was very successful in his college ranks in the late 2000s
with the Florida Gators won back-to-back national titles.
But he's kind of been with the Chicago Bulls for the last couple of years
and just kind of treading water with them.
They haven't really amounted to anything,
just kind of get to the play in and then go from there.
I mean, if they're going to swing for the fences,
they've got to go for guys like Nate Oats would be one.
Tommy Lloyd, Arizona.
Imagine him with North Carolina with that kind of resources there as well.
T.J. Olsaburger at Iowa State.
He's kind of a guy where he's kind of made his do at Iowa State
and potentially a team could poach a guy like that.
Todd Golden, maybe at Florida, hey, he's done that thing.
Dusty May potentially in Michigan.
It's all going to depend on dollar signs.
But I think they're going to have to swing for offenses with coaches who,
majority of the ones I just named are still dancing in March.
So this will probably go on forever if one of these teams continues to get to the championship game.
And I don't know if a guy would leave if he wins a national championship with said program.
I know some people like, oh, Fred Hoyberg,
but I don't think that they're going to go that direction.
His name will be thrown out.
His name will be thrown out there,
but I don't think North Carolina is going to go in that.
They're going to go with a guy who has had a program.
To Nebraska's credit,
this is a year,
their first year being ranked in the top 10 and, you know,
30 some years.
Best season they've had ever in program history,
but I think they're going to go for a guy with a winning prestige since they've been there,
like Tommy Lloyd in Arizona.
Look what he's done since taking over Sean Miller
and what he's done with the Wildcast program.
A guy like Nate Oates, who's been in Alabama,
and Alabama, he's only needed so many resources there
with the Crimson Tide with all the other success
they're having across football and everything else.
Well, football, it depends how you look at it
with Caleb DeBoer there right now, how that stands out.
But I think they're going to swings the fences.
I don't think they're going to end up with a Penn State football situation
where they let go of James Franklin.
They hire Matt Campbell.
I mean, it would be funny if they did hire T.J. Olsaburger from Iowa State.
But I don't think they're going to,
they're going to swing and a miss.
They're North Carolina basketball.
They have plenty of resources.
So many NBA players have gone through that program.
I don't think they're going to swing it a miss just because of Chapel Hill and basketball
go hand in hand.
And it's going to be weird just saying, you know, Hubert Davis not be coaching them because
we saw him against John Shire.
It's been, you know, removed, Coach Kay and Roy Williams removed so many years.
Seeing a non-North Carolina tie go up against a guy like John Shire who has ties of
Duke would be very intriguing because, you know,
I don't know what it does for recruiting.
I don't know the recruiting class on top of my head, too.
What kind of dominoes fall there as well.
So interesting to say the least.
And I think we'll have to wait a couple of weeks to find out where this all ends in Chappell Hill.
This time of year, the school calendar really starts to fill up, spring activities, testing season, and that final push toward the end of the year.
It's a great moment for kids to stay focused and build confidence in what they're learning.

Well, and I think, too, it is, you know, it is, I think that Fred Hoyberg is going to remain at Nebraska.
He's talked about retiring here, all that sort of stuff being his last job.
But there is that one job that you mentioned, the Iowa State job, that if it does come open,
and I think there would be some at least consideration.
Obviously, that's where he played coached before, you know, all that sort of stuff.
And also, Berger was one of his assistants.
And, you know, so there's still ties, I'm sure, to that team discussions that are had in the off season or maybe, you know, even weekly.
I'm not really sure exactly what that connection is at this point.
But it is, you know, this is what happens when you have successful coaches is their names kind of gets floats around in these, in these areas.
So, you know, if and when it ever does happen,
where Osselberger takes a different job,
Hewberg would be the top name.
I'm sure for Iowa State or, you know, at least 1A,
that they would think about.
And so with these dominoes, they can fall in that direction.
Again, I don't predict that's going to happen.
I don't think that's something you necessarily have to worry about
or anything like that.
But another reminder, just to take in everything that you can
that's currently going on because there's no guarantee.
in the future of anything.
As we know, nothing is assured in life,
but, you know, especially in these scenarios of being able to play in a sweet 16 game.
Obviously, the team's going to look different moving in the future.
You're going to have, you know, different builds and different opportunities, you know, in years to come.
But I do.
I mean, I think as long as Hoyberg's in town, you know, the program's in very good hands.
And obviously, he's recruiting at a new level and looks to,
to be pretty set as far as a team that's going to compete in the NCAA tournament for years to come.
But again, all that can come unraveling pretty quickly with some job opening.
We have a couple more minutes.
So the athletic is reporting something around college football.
They're saying the college football season could start a week earlier as soon as 2027.
That's according to a report from the athletic.
The move would add flexibility with two idle weeks and remove the need for NCAA waivers.
A decision is expected in the coming months.
So imagine start, instead of starting on Labor Day, you start in the last week of August and potentially a week zero being like August 23rd.
So you'd have like August 23rd be week zero, August 30th potentially week one, maybe even earlier than that.
And then Labor Day would be kind of the Labor Day weekend will be week.
We're going to be week two.
Interesting.
Yeah.
I mean, football would get here earlier.
Exactly.
It'd be like the heat of the summer.
I mean, practices would probably get moved up for fall camp would probably start in July, I would assume.
even more than likely after, you know,
fourth of July happens,
you get a week off,
then everybody kind of moves back in.
Yeah,
I would remove some of those idle weeks,
NCAA waivers.
It'd be weird,
like having a Nebraska game,
like August,
like 27th or something like that at home.
Like if they played like Ohio,
like this year,
if you move that,
would the season still go
until November would add buy weeks,
I would assume,
add more by weeks.
Yeah, yeah,
probably would.
Season would probably be a couple more weeks longer,
but,
yeah,
I mean,
that'd be interesting to say the least.
I just can't imagine like a,
I mean, maybe you move it up, maybe the playoffs gets expanded.
I mean, Black Friday, you get a round of 32 game or something.
I don't know.
That's college football.
The world is evolving in that sport constantly.
Yeah, yeah, it is definitely, I mean, I think the more they kind of prepare for that,
the more they can handle an expanded playoff, which we all know is going to continue to be their,
the goal.
Yep.
Is to see what more money and excitement can bring to a college football playoff.
So we'll see how that.
shapes out.
Then, we're having up for one-on-one.
Thanks again to Rudy Gress the fourth for joining me in the first hour.
Nick Wyman here in the second hour.
