Starting point is 00:00:00 You're listening to One-on-One with DP. Brought you by Mary Ellen's Food for the Soul. On 93-7 The Ticket and the Ticket FM.com. Welcome back final segment with Mark Canterbury. Of course, Mark would not understand this, but that most of our rejoins are, from my shows, are WWE entry. It's such a weird thing.
Starting point is 00:00:27 It's perfect. Oh, it's such a weird thing. Mark Canterbury, Henry, oh, God, we joins us. Mark, I have to be out. Like I said, we missed some of the stuff because you were breaking up, because I do want to go back. We've got about 10 minutes and we can go through this stuff again.
Starting point is 00:00:39 But yeah, most of my rejoins are WW entrance song. Like, I'm just that dude, and I won't apologize. I just won't. So I want to go back because we were talking, you were talking about the pig, pig, the pen fight. But we met, like Harrison, did he say he pushed him into a fence? Like the fence, it snapped, right? You could see Hunter's blood in the second half of the fight.
Starting point is 00:01:09 Yeah, they didn't have like a bar gate. They had those old panel gates, and they had it hooked to the little hog pin that they had built. There was, I think, the six hogs in there. And, of course, at the beginning of the match, we worked our way down there, and Hunter threw me into the gate. I was the quarter of them, so I just bent the gate. and it created a sharp edge. So later in the match, when I threw Hunter into it,
Starting point is 00:01:41 it just sliced his back open. And we didn't know it until we were already, you know, I got dumped over. He flipped me over in there. And then Hillbilly pushed him. They got a little push match. He pushed Hunter back, and I snagged him and pulled him in there and pressed him and threw him in all that good stuff.
Starting point is 00:02:01 and we were afraid he was going to get some kind of weird disease right and new swine flu well you noticed it in the paper view and I was like wait a minute he's he's cut up pretty good but great finish one of the great one of the great matches of all time and of course and you're that with
Starting point is 00:02:21 winning the title and I want you to go back once again go back to the garden and winning the world championship Yeah, one thing I want to say is that our match that year was up for one of the top matches of the year, top five matches at the Slammy Awards that year. Yes, sir. I just wanted to throw that in there. Yes, sir.
Starting point is 00:02:45 Winning the tag team championships. Oh, my gosh. In Madison Square Garden. I mean, the limousine of buildings, you know, the Super Bowl. it was such a great feeling. And I don't know if I told you this story or not, but I used to wear the John Deere hat all the time. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:09 So after we won the match that night, I remember jumping up on Hibbilly's shoulders. I was so excited. Athlete. And that place was just, I mean, it was rocking. And it was just, I get goosebumps now just talking about it. But I threw my John Deer hat out in the crowd. I mean, I flung it
Starting point is 00:03:30 Like I was up on the mound again Some kid gets it And about six months later We're up there doing a signing in New York City And this kid comes up It gives me this John Deer hat Said, you threw this to me a few months ago When you all won the belt
Starting point is 00:03:49 So I saw I knew it was my hat Because I had marked it And it had marked it and it had a stain on it. So I knew it was a legit hat, so I signed it for him. And that's the last I've heard of it. But just an awesome feeling, warm, exciting, just almost out of your skin. It just, you know, like I'm getting goosebumps for you, just listening to you tell the story.
Starting point is 00:04:18 I have to ask it to go through. So let's build a Mount Rushmore of wrestling. And this is strictly yours, Mark, so you cannot be wrong. But who are the four wrestlers that you would put on the Mount Rushmore, the Henry O. Godwin, Mark Canterbury, Mount Rushmore of wrestling? I've been trying to think, maybe let's do two little Mount Rushmore as an old school and an old old school. Got you. Start out with an old school.
Starting point is 00:04:48 Sweet. Let's do like a dusty. Okay. A flare. Yes. a steamboat Yes And I'm going to have to go with
Starting point is 00:05:01 Harley race That's like you You can't go wrong Like you can't be mad at it Now is that old school or old old school That's old old school Okay what's your old school With Undertaker
Starting point is 00:05:16 Stone Cold You got to throw Sting in there just for the longevity and as popular as he was. And Sean Michael. So you're going to take HBK over the Rock. Is that what you're telling me? Yes.
Starting point is 00:05:37 Yeah. Wow. Are you going to take Steamboat over Hogan? Yes. See, that's why I love talking to wrestlers because there's a different thing. People fail, like I was, you know, I went to college in Richmond, so Mid-Atlantic was the thing. and so I got to see Steamboat and Flair
Starting point is 00:05:58 get after it I mean one of the best rivals ever right? Like that's pretty deep when you talk about when Flair talks about it said his favorite matches or all of his matches against Ricky Steamboat and because Steamboat may be the true
Starting point is 00:06:17 greatest face in wrestling history a guy who never turned heel he never do Steamboat might be the greatest face of all. And Tim and Sina, right? They're kind of, yeah. Where do you land on that? On steamboat?
Starting point is 00:06:35 Yeah. Oh, definitely. I mean, never a heel. Yeah. He never. A good-looking dude still is. I was just on a signing in Severeval, Tennessee with him probably five, six months ago. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:52 We hadn't seen each other and probably, three years, but like you say, another, just a sweetheart of a guy. There aren't enough of them in the business, that's for sure. Like to get, right, to get everybody. The business has changed. The boys have changed. It's different. What are your thoughts on that?
Starting point is 00:07:13 Because I, somebody asked me that, actually, a buddy has a show in Atlanta, and he wanted to be on to talk wrestling. And as it came up, and I just said, look, I'm old school in the sense that listen. I want to at least feel like the dudes in the ring could beat my butt. Right? Like, and now that's not the case. There's so much gymnastics. There's so much over jumping, overleeping, over-talking that I don't, like, these are dudes who don't impress me.
Starting point is 00:07:44 Like, I need to feel like in some sense that, look, if I saw this, I saw this dude at bar, I should watch my step. Yeah. And we were just talking about that this past weekend at Hazard Fest in Greenville, Tennessee, that, you know, back in my day, just the BSK group, you had me, my partner, both over 300, Undertaker over 300, Godfather, Savio was about 280, 290, Yoko was 6 plus, Right. Rakichi was probably 3.50, 370 at the time. So, and you had Vader, you know, Big Van Vader.
Starting point is 00:08:32 Yeah. Bam Bam Bigelow. Just, there was some big dudes. Tugboat. Yeah. Tugboat. Yeah. It was a big guy sport back then.
Starting point is 00:08:46 And everybody was athletic. You know, had Vader doing somersault. Right. Bam, Bam doing somersaults off the top rope and Taker walking the rope doing his thing. So there was a lot of athleticism and big guys back then, but it's changed.
Starting point is 00:09:04 And, you know, I had heard Undertaker did a video, a interview or something and said that, you know, the guys today aren't as tough as they were back then. And a sense, I could see where he's coming from, you know,
Starting point is 00:09:19 It's a little bit different now to me. Yeah, it just seems, it just seems different. But I'm glad that they're getting, you know, there's multiple, you know, spots for folks to work and folks are being put in play. And I think my hope is that constantly, consistently, they bring back the Mark Canterbury's of the world to be heard, to be seen, to be known.
Starting point is 00:09:46 I'm glad the convention circuit is out there. the signing circuit is going to be the where are you going to next where are you going to sign next I was just getting ready to say where we're going to be that's cool great minds thinking like yes sir

That's who the promotion is. And it's November, I think, 10th, 11th or 11th or 11th or something like that. I'm getting in on the 9th. I'm covering UFC that weekend. It's Adesania Pereira. And it's at Madison Square Garden. I know I'm getting in November 11. So you and I are going to have beverages, sir.

Let's do that, man. So where's you going to be? And then October 28th and 29th, we're in Fort Wayne. Okay. There's a big show there at the signing.
Starting point is 00:11:28 It's called Heroes and Legends. Nice. Okay. It's for Jason Maples. Good guy. It should be a lot of fun. Mark, listen, this is the first minute. We're going to work this out where you need your own show
Starting point is 00:11:43 where you can just sit and talk wrestling stories and invite people in. We can actually video stream so you actually, your face shows up on the feed and we can just zoom in like we do. And you can invite other folks to come in and talk. But you and I will talk about that later. Okay. That would be cool. Mark, man, listen. Look, I love you to pieces.
