Starting point is 00:00:00 It's time to go one-on-one with D.P. Coming at you live from the couple Chevrolet GMC Studios. Here is your host, Derek Pearson, presented by Beatrice Bakery, on 93-7 The Ticket and the Ticket FM.com. Welcome to one-on-one on Tuesday. Keep asking for the weather to get better, and it just refuses. Won't listen. Whoever's in charge of the weather.
Starting point is 00:00:35 please get it together make your connections deliver coffee bagels and joes whatever you need to be at your bakery whatever you need to offer right go do that and get it to handle because this is crazy I need better weather we need a sacrifice to the sun gods right because the sun is not out
Starting point is 00:00:51 Beatrice's bakery cake to the sun god I think it'll work let's give it to go let's give it to go I mean I think I just want to sacrifice somebody the sun gods first off there's no volcanoes here so that's going to be a little hard I think the apple strusel
Starting point is 00:01:05 cake coffee cake that's a spring spring like cake right that would work either apple maybe the banana nut bread maybe
Starting point is 00:01:16 peach trusel coffee cake that seems flowery it seems like something that that you know you would see flowers and butterflies and nice weather
Starting point is 00:01:26 I think that would be fair right or maybe the chocolate just go chocolate rum cake the chocolate rum cake is that that would throw us straight into 90 degree days.
Starting point is 00:01:36 Or the premium chocolate cake. That's a summer cake. That would throw us right into laying on the beach cake. Like, yeah. Or the chocolate Merlot. That seems like beach cake. Beach cake. The chocolate Merlot is like a, is like a 55 degree night.
Starting point is 00:01:53 Okay. Okay. Where you just kind of outside like shorts and a t-shirt or like a light jacket. Should we offer them the 12-piece chocolate fruit cake square? Okay. Now you're just going too far. right i mean but if it's to the gods right it's to the gods he would appreciate that but that's she would appreciate that's
Starting point is 00:02:10 that's not a that is not a weather gift okay that is that gift is not for weather okay that's hmm let's see if i could be if i can be pg about that's that's more of a fertility gift oh the lemon drop cake that's a sun cake that's definitely a sun cake that's the suncake lemon drop yeah okay that's what we'll offer We'll call Rick Meyer and tell them. Or, you know what, peanut collard a cake.
Starting point is 00:02:38 Again, that's a beach cake. Okay, so we'll call Rick Meyer and have them deliver it. Arrange a lemon drop cake to be sacrificed to the gods. You know what? I figured it out. That's why he hasn't made his delivery yet. That's why the weather's bad. So this is on Rick. This is all on Rick Meyer.
Starting point is 00:02:57 Sorry, Rick, it's your fault. It's all on Rick Meyer. Everybody can blame Rick Meyer for the weather being bad. Yeah, right? Because we don't have cakes here. Right. I, you know, I mean, that cake room can't be a cake room if there's no cakes in the room. That next, I mean, there's a couple of cakes, but it's not the full.
Starting point is 00:03:11 It's not the cake room. That's just the kind of cake room. Yeah. So Rick Meyer's got to handle it. So if you know Rick, reach out to Rick and tell him that he's coming tomorrow. Once you deliver the cakes, the weather will get better. He's coming tomorrow. I swear if he delivers on the weather again, I don't know what to do.
Starting point is 00:03:28 He is officially the son guy. How dare you? He'll be here tomorrow at three. Regan don't like this cold weather. Rick, we're just letting you know. Like, we're on to you. We're on to you. Like, I'm looking to see what...
Starting point is 00:03:46 We finally figured out his secret. Right? Like, this is what it is, right? And it'll rain tomorrow and cleanse, and then it'll jump up to 75 after the cakes get here. A nice, a cleansing. A cleansing rain. That's what it'll be.

You should get fancy fancy. The bundles, you can get the different fruit cakes together. You can get the different McCourt cakes. You can get the snacks together.

Starting point is 00:05:13 Unless he's working on the weather, which he may be doing. I'm never surprised by that. A couple of things that we were talking about over the last couple of days. And some of it comes to fruition last night. local quarterback decides he's going to go to Oklahoma State rather than Nebraska. So the fan base jumps into, well, why is this happening? Why is a local player not committing to the University of Nebraska? And then the question is where they offered and then you get your answer.
Starting point is 00:05:55 And then who are the other players at said position who have been offered in that year? A couple of things to consider. One, you're not, Nebraska can't sign everybody. They cannot. They can't sign everybody. Sorry about it. But is there a maximum on the number of quarterbacks you should recruit and commit yourselves to in the same class? Is there ever a time when two quarterbacks, two quarterbacks receive a scholarship when you have other needs?
Starting point is 00:06:31 In Nebraska or anywhere? Nebraska. I feel like yes. Although I'm not, I can't with 100% certainty to say so. I can go back and look through recruiting classes, though. That is something I can do. Yeah. Each staff, and again, this is a different staff with different coordinators, etc.,
Starting point is 00:06:52 different assistants, who have different needs and desires for what they're going to do going forward. This is class 23, right? Mm-hmm. So within that. Well, I mean, technically it's just the last class. You had two transfer quarterbacks and a freshman. transfers and a freshman. Well, I mean, one of the transfers is a freshman.
Starting point is 00:07:13 But if you've committed a lot of your resources to those three quarterbacks, plus having two existing quarterbacks also in play, do you then add two more quarterbacks to that room? Not knowing what happens with Casey Thompson or Purdy or Smothertie or Smothers? We don't know. Yeah. And you've got a quarterback already on the roster in the space who's working with an injury trying to get better, right? So is that a position where you would commit two of your limited scholarships to?
Starting point is 00:07:55 No. Right? And then is this a question of better, was it better to save that for a quarterback that you're not sure you were going to get? because if you offer Flores and he accepts, you're great. If you offer Flores and you don't, then you're left out if you don't already have the other guy. If you don't have the other guy in the pocket already. So there is a cost of the man, and then there is a, hey, we need to fill the position with the first person of note and quality who wants to be a part of this program.
Starting point is 00:08:28 Now, was Flores recruited and offered completely? completely an absolution at any point? On his 24-7 profile, Flores was not offered a scholarship by Nebraska. So then we get into why would they not offer Flores? Is it because you had what you wanted? Or was it to say publicly to another quarterback of note that you will be the focus?
Starting point is 00:09:00 There's no point of us bringing in somebody in your position. We will save the space for you. You are our guy. We trust you. Right. So if you're trying to get Riola, would you have offered Flores? Yes. I mean, you take a quarter.
Starting point is 00:09:17 What would Ryola say? You take a quarterback. You take one quarterback in each class. I mean, everybody does it. That's not abnormal to have a quarterback one class above you, or even if he's redshirted kind of the same class as you. I mean, but you're also maybe possibly, depending on how great you are, expected to red shirt as well.
Starting point is 00:09:37 So then again, you're one class below them. I mean, it's not, again, that's not abnormal to take a quarterback a class before. Taking two quarterbacks in the same class is a little weird. Unless, of course, you're Ohio State and you get like three five-star quarterbacks in the same class and you just, you know, do whatever you want and one of them, two of them transfer, whatever, you still have another five-star. Nebraska can't work for that. Nebraska cannot do that.
Starting point is 00:10:02 So you get the person who you believe is. who you can get. Can get or you believe is going to be the one for possibly the future and you load up after that. And if the next class has another guy that you think could be the future, you get him too. As a university, as a coaching staff, you can't worry about the competition between the quarterbacks.
Starting point is 00:10:25 They're going to settle that on their own. No, but quarterbacks worry about that stuff. And they, I mean, they do. Quarterbacks worry that. And I mean, you can't promise them anything, really. you can't as Nebraska I don't know if you can go out there and promise somebody hey you're going to be the starting quarterback but those promises are being made they are they are they are happening those promises are being made but i don't think you you can or should be going out there promising people hey you're going to be the starter you know in two years
Starting point is 00:10:54 in three years because you well but you're going to say that to rioa i'm maybe there's zero I mean, he's a, there's zero chance you get the number one prospect in the entire country. I don't care what his last name is if you don't tell him that he's the guy. Yeah. It just doesn't happen. Well, that's a five star. That's a different deal. That doesn't happen.
Starting point is 00:11:15 That's a different deal. Right now, the quarterbacks you're going after a three star, low, mid-four star. You're going after a five-star. You tell him he's the dude. He believes he's going to be the dude. Everybody else believes he's going to be the dude. The quarterback you recruited the year before believes he has to work even harder. because you're bringing in a five-star afternoon.
Starting point is 00:11:32 No, no, no, no. You're talking about after-the-fact things. After-the-fact business, the reason you're in this shape and condition is how you're doing business across the board. Across the board. As Coach Wilson told us yesterday, you've got to trust me and allow me to help you be great.
Starting point is 00:11:54 Right? And if you're not doing that, people aren't buying in. Now, you've got to understand that recruiting is a full 360 circle of service. It really is, and that's the part that people miss, and that's why people get in trouble. This is why you're struggling. One, you have to be able to identify talent, potential.
Starting point is 00:12:15 You have to measure it for your system. Then you have to consider all the peripherals, girlfriends, baby mama, parents, academics, whether folks can get in the building or not anyway, right? Best friends. Talent is one thing, but can you actually get into handle the academics? Remember, most student athletes at the Power 5 level don't fail because of talent. They fail because of their inability to manage the off-field stuff,
Starting point is 00:12:43 whether it's academics, personal dating, family business, whatever. Right, that's the part you miss. So then you've got to say that if I'm going to recruit somebody, you better have your ducks in a row about how business is going to be done. Right? Scott Frost has to consider Whipple and now Mickey Joseph at a high volume, high level, before anybody's recruited. Then the question becomes, well, who's recruiting for the group or the team?
Starting point is 00:13:12 Are you recruiting for the group or are you recruiting for the team? And Scott Frost has to, he has to co-sign. Whoever Mickey Joseph wants, whoever Whipple wants, whoever, et cetera, et cetera. So some of this may have been somebody else. This could have been, I don't know. somebody somebody along the line of communication or a long line of approval didn't approve possibly we're not saying it happened
Starting point is 00:13:37 what we have to assume from this point is that every decision is a team and group decision right yeah the decision to offer and accept but ultimately it comes down to sky fras yeah he's the head guy he's in charge so then what will be asked of scott over the next couple of days is what was the situation here?
Starting point is 00:14:00 He'll be asked. Whether we get an answer or not, good luck. But I think he'll be asked. But from the fan-based standpoint, there are people who want Nebraska first. And I get that, as long as you have a full understanding of what that means
Starting point is 00:14:18 when it comes to Big Ten football and winning titles. Now, you can tell me that for the past few years, you have been Nebraska first. and I would tell you what your record is. You can tell me that it's talent first and I will tell you what your record is. There's a difference between Nebraska
Starting point is 00:14:35 recruiting and keeping all of the kids. And again, I mean this with all due respect to all the recruits and the kids in the state. There's a difference between Nebraska keeping their kids in state and Ohio State keeping their kids in state. Well, everybody has to do it, but remember that this is the only game in the state.
Starting point is 00:14:55 Ohio State's still not I mean Cincinnati was in top 10 last year So look they've got somebody right down the corner I mean not for nothing But Ohio Bobcat still recruit at a high level But Ohio's if there's a five star in the state of Ohio And Ohio State wants him Well the assumption is that everybody wants to go to Ohio State
Starting point is 00:15:16 And Ohio and Columbus and that's not true There are folks who can't wait to get out No matter where you are There are people who can't wait to get out of your state Yeah. Especially athlete. Yeah. Now, I'll say this.
Starting point is 00:15:30 You've got to understand it. There are no pro athletes in uniform hanging out in Nebraska. Ohio, you can go to camps and you can see Bengals and Browns and you can talk to them about what's required. The former Husker, we've had the former Husker discussion, right? That the guys who just won, there has to be guys who just made the league who are willing to come back and live in your state. and help recruit. That's not happening. No.
Starting point is 00:16:00 Also, you have to produce in mass numbers NFL talent at a high level, known NFL talent. Now, I don't know, is we got guys coming back here. That's my knowledge. Preaching the word that, you know, you should do what everybody in the program is telling you to do because the program is right. Not to my knowledge. And they know what they're doing. Nobody from the previous regime or the NFL talent is coming back. Is the Nebraska high school talent good enough to win in the Big Ten alone?
Starting point is 00:16:34 No. Right? It is not. So then you have to skew your focus to what percentage and what we go back to the old days and folks say, well, I hate when you say go back to the old days. But the old days will tell you that they put state talent in the walk-on purpose. and said, earn your way. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:16:57 This program has not said what its recruiting philosophy is. If it has, I've missed it. To your knowledge, has this program said what its recruiting policy protocol priority focus is? Have they said that? Like what do you mean? Well, has this year's leadership, so as we stand with Frost, Whipple, This year's staff, yes. Have they said what their focus is, hey, we're going to focus on keeping all of the best state to in-state talent here and developing them?
Starting point is 00:17:40 Have they said that the focus is, hey, we're going to get our skill position guys from somewhere else, we're going to get our alignment from here. No. Have they said we're going to get... The first part, Frost has said that over the years, multiple times. What sort of athlete we're looking at. Two years ago, we were looking for long linemen. We're looking for tall receivers.
Starting point is 00:18:01 Well, they were looking for scat receivers. Well, remember they went. They duck our position. But they went back against that to go get Omar. Now they're going tall. Right. They switched that up. When they first got here, they were looking for 510, 511, 6 foot guys with a ton of speed to line up in the slot.
Starting point is 00:18:18 Now, the offers that they put out in the receiver group have been big guys. All over 6-2. Right? Big guys. Big guys are tied in, right? Yes, very big guys. Is there another tight-in in the loop for next year, to your knowledge? The, I'm spacing on it as the kid from Pierce.
Starting point is 00:18:35 Okay. So, right, that's that's that. Receivers in the state, they just made offers yesterday. Benny and Goye Malachi Coleman. Don't know who you get from it. I don't know who you get from it. No. Benny was on a visit to Penn State not last.
Starting point is 00:18:52 No, yeah, last weekend. The thing about the recruiting thing, and even within the state, even if you offered everybody, literally everybody, let's say you decided you want the top two quarterbacks in state Nebraska. You're not getting everybody. Now, Nebraska has not done that because we know that through Noel Walters that they didn't do that. Right?
Starting point is 00:19:10 We know right. Like we don't have to go, we don't have to go back in history to look deeply and say, okay, this is what they're doing. You didn't get the Gatorade player the year who wanted to play for you. And then next year's quarter. back that of note says that you didn't offer him. And it's not just, it's not just him saying it.
Starting point is 00:19:30 It's the websites that are pretty, pretty accurate on, on at least that, the offers and such. Also saying you did not offer him. So I said all that to say this. We don't know what this program is doing in the recruiting phase. Nope. Because we're just active in it for the first time as it stands, post-pandemic or at least late pandemic. being able to get access to folks, being able to meet the folks,
Starting point is 00:19:58 because instead of doing Zoom calls with recruits, they actually can sit and talk with recruits, and they can get back on the road. They can bring them on to campus, they can go to their houses. We won't know what this is until drumroll July. You're not going to know. No. Trans reporter, they're going to have to go get Lyman.
Starting point is 00:20:19 You're going to jump in the transfer port. They're going to have to do it. Next year, what they do for this year will dictate. next year. What they're looking at for next year. And you can't, is anybody in the program secure for next year? What do you, like player-wise? Coaches-wise?
Starting point is 00:20:36 Yeah. No. So they have to get it done now. That is the focus and that should be the priority. Should be. Now, you still got to recruit. You still got to recruit. That's the hard part.
Starting point is 00:20:48 Who is in charge and what are they trying to accomplish? Are they trying to fill based on the current roster? The current situation and condition of the transfer portal. Or for the future. Because what we know is, would you rather have Flores in the space or would you rather have the next Casey Thompson from the transfer portal who can come in and fix whatever situation you're in? Would you rather have Flores is not going to grade above Chubba Purdy?
Starting point is 00:21:20 No. Right? Just pay attention to what they're doing. Because action over words anyway. Yeah. What they're doing is you have an emergency need to fill, right? And they've got focus. They need all the NIA money and all of the scholarships to improve line play on both sides of the ball.
Starting point is 00:21:41 We know that. That we can say without any hesitation. It is needed. Right. So if you're spending those resources or using those resources to get those things done, the quarterback position in 2023, you've addressed you have a safety net
Starting point is 00:21:58 but it may not be best end game because you missed on an in-state player of the Power 5 Division 1 talent that you didn't offer which is a statement out loud of how you're doing business
Starting point is 00:22:14 and you can tell me unless you can tell me that you offer it and privately Florida said I'm not coming I want to comment but you've also spent a ton of resources on Dylan Ryola with no payback on it now I'll also point this picture to you and we'll go to break but imagine your Flores
Starting point is 00:22:37 and all of the tension and all of the talk is on Ryola a guy who doesn't want to date you or at least hasn't committed to dating you what would you do I would probably do exactly what he did which is go to Oklahoma State and commit. We'll talk about more when we come back.
