Starting point is 00:00:28 Poisons that you could use that would be undetectable. Oh my goodness! What have you done? Take a listen. I'll ask you about all the allegations that have come out, Ghislaine. Happy New Year. I ask you about all the allegations that have come out, Ghislaine. Happy New Year. The monster that we all know could not have existed without Ghislaine Maxwell. Maxwell may be the final chapter in the saga of alleged serial sexual predator Jeffrey Epstein.
Starting point is 00:01:01 Ghislaine Maxwell and you have devised several schemes to lure underage girls to you for sex. Isn't that correct? Where is Jeffrey Epstein's former girlfriend? She's vanished. So all of us were playing this game. Where in the world is Ghislaine Maxwell? The theories ran rampant. She was hiding in a submarine,
Starting point is 00:01:21 which she's licensed to pilot. Ghislaine Maxwell. Question is, where is she? Une femme, Gillan Maxwell. She's got three passports, British, French, and American. It was Gillan Maxwell who gave Jeffrey Epstein entree into this world of the rich, famous, and powerful. The Little Black Book contains the names and phone numbers of very prominent,
Starting point is 00:01:44 rich, and powerful people. Presidents, heads of state. There wasn't really anybody that Ghislaine didn't know or couldn't get to know very quickly. We begin with the FBI's arrest of Jeffrey Epstein's longtime associate Ghislaine Maxwell. Maxwell played a critical role in helping Epstein to identify, befriend and groom minor victims for abuse. There are four unnamed victims in the indictment. Annie Farmer is the only one who has come forward publicly. It's just so clear how much they were grooming me
Starting point is 00:02:17 to sexually abuse me. Maxwell has denied all charges. The Maxwell family feels they need to speak out. This is the first television interview that Ian Maxwell, Gillen's brother, has given in 30 years. My sister is fighting for her life. I have to come out and stand up and tell people this is wrong. We believe that Gillen is innocent.
Starting point is 00:02:39 She was only charged after Jeffrey Epstein died. She is a substitute for Jeffrey Epstein. The mob wants somebody. We look at her face and we ask ourselves, is this the face of a monster or, as she claims, a scapegoat? That's the question. My name is Stavis Jones. I'm a social photographer photographing parties all over the world. And that's how I came to photograph Ghislaine Maxwell.
Starting point is 00:03:33 I remember seeing her and thinking to myself, like, who is that glamorous woman? It's almost like there's two different Ghislaines. According to the victims, the real galen is this manipulative woman who has no feelings. This is the first picture I took of her at Oxford. I didn't know who she was, and someone identified, wrote her name on the back of the contact sheet. So she would have been starting at Oxford University around then. If I was asked to describe her then I would say innocent, beautiful, privileged. In Oxford she wasn't part of the cool crowd, they were the sort of
Starting point is 00:04:23 rich crowd. I don't really see her as a rule breaker necessarily. Like I see her as somebody who's very much trying to fit the mold of like the life she thought she was going to have when she was a child. In family photos that they've never shared before, you can see a pretty idyllic life, including an expensive education. And all because of a difficult, brilliant billionaire,
Starting point is 00:04:45 her dad, Robert Maxwell. Well, Robert Maxwell was one of the most important and powerful people in British public life in the 70s and 80s. He was a media tycoon. He owned a publishing house. He owned tabloids, various different companies. We've got to get the Mirror newspapers on top. All the way.
Starting point is 00:05:07 He made national news almost every day because of his extravagances and his pronouncements. Incredibly powerful and charismatic. Hugely egotistical. You would eat caviar. Next Chris. No you cannot. And people were physically afraid of him. Being with him and around him was always quite tense because, you know, he was demanding and difficult.
Starting point is 00:05:36 And so one tended to be not too close if one could avoid it. The governing theory is that her father was a despotic man who was very mercurial and moody, and her entire life was just about trying to get his acceptance. Robert Maxwell was born into a Hasidic family in Czechoslovakia. His name was Jan Ludwig Hock,
Starting point is 00:06:08 and he fought in battles across Europe. He was one of nine children himself that was so poor that they had to share shoes. They all slept in the same rooms. And a good portion of his family was murdered in the Holocaust. And a good portion of his family was murdered in the Holocaust. By the time he was 23, he'd changed his name four times. He fixed on Robert Maxwell because it sounded faintly Scottish, which he quite liked.
Starting point is 00:06:36 Five minutes to midnight before the offer went out to withdraw... You know how Americans love that British accent? He had a really nice upper-crush British accent, which is funny because he's from Czechoslovakia. There's no problem about it. He picks up from a very, very well-educated British army officer during the war the accent he ends up with. And so he sounds incredibly posh.
Starting point is 00:07:04 Robert Maxwell lived in a 50 room mansion, Headington Hall. A BBC documentary called Robert Maxwell, Downfall, showed what it was like inside the mansion. All kinds of rich and powerful and famous people were in the house. And little Gillen was right there for parties. What do you want for Christmas? They had a private jet and they had helicopters. And they're kind of royalty without the letters in front of their name. Ghislaine was the baby sister, the ninth child, born on Christmas Day in 1961. And pretty much the same week that Ghislaine was born,
Starting point is 00:07:49 the oldest son, Michael, was very badly injured in a car crash and indeed was in a coma for the next seven years. The whole family were completely shattered because he was the leader of the tribe, it was the apple of my parents' eyes and so on. And Ghislaine was to an extent really ignored. So much so that aged about four, she walks into her mother's room one day and stamps her foot
Starting point is 00:08:13 and says, you know, mommy, I exist. Ghislaine's mother wrote in her book that Ghislaine actually suffered from anorexia when she was just three or four years old. I mean, that is pretty shocking. Gillan's my youngest sister. Her nickname is Sprat, S-P-R-A-T, Sprat. It's the smallest little fish in the ocean.
Starting point is 00:08:35 It was a name given to her by our father, and so I always start my letters, darling Sprat. We're a very, very close family. We have a very strong father. If you've got an alpha male father in your life, you tend, as children, to cling together. Betty Maxwell, in her book, says that he would shout and threaten and rant at the children until they were reduced to pulp. That's a quote. So Gielin is seven. Len has spoken about her early life and she said it was lots of stick
Starting point is 00:09:13 and very little praise, but she said it was also inspiring. She was ostensibly her father's favourite daughter. He treated her like he did all his children. One moment they were in favor, one minute they were not. I think she was a little spoiled. I think I could say that. Maybe it was my parents feeling guilty that they had ignored her really for the first few years of her life. She didn't have any reason to worry while her father was alive. He even set her up with a job with one of the football teams that he had owned.
Starting point is 00:09:56 And he installed her in the management. So at the age of 22, she is now suddenly among the executives at a football club. Glenn did various work for her father's mirror group, newspapers. Her father had started these sweepstakes. I'm waiting to make one of them. Maxwell enlisted Glenn to help promote the sweepstakes. There's a photograph of her standing in a messy office with all the entries strewn about the floor.
Starting point is 00:10:33 The Maxwells were mixing with people right at the top of British society and members of the Royal Family were part of this circle. Prince Andrew had spoken about his friendship with Gillen and he met her when she was at Oxford University. She had very good connections because she was very well educated and she was the son of her father, sorry, the daughter of her father. I'm not even sure if I realised what a socialite was then, but I suppose she was becoming a socialite.
Starting point is 00:11:03 But I suppose she was becoming a socialite. Maxwell, for a very rich man, had virtually no interest in possessions. One of the few possessions that he really cared about was his yacht, which he called the Lady Galena. What the other children thought when he named his yacht after his youngest daughter? I don't know. It was the Lady Glenn that featured in the darkest hours of the Maxwell family's lives.
Starting point is 00:11:39 What happened on that yacht would lead to an incredible worldwide scandal. What do you say about reports that some of the... A scandal that would devastate her family. And it would come to really turn Gillen's life upside down. Gillen Maxwell's dad was a publishing tycoon in England, but Robert Maxwell wanted more, to go international. He gave Gilead a job at his new paper, The European. Every weekend there's a newspaper that brings Europe to life. The new paper was a kind of USA Today for Europe and there was a funny ad where lots of very rich people wearing sunglasses and one writer actually called it the newspaper for people who wear sunglasses.
Starting point is 00:12:31 Open it up and you open up Europe. He just wanted to keep growing, keep expanding. He wasn't satisfied in Britain and Europe. He wanted to get to America. And where better than New York Daily News, because it was almost bankrupt. The new owner of the Daily News, Bob Maxwell. Bob! The tabloid king comes to New York,
Starting point is 00:12:56 and there at his side was his daughter, Ghislaine. She was often with him and hosting cocktail parties for him, and generally being at his side. You know, she should be this kind of glamorous figurehead of the Maxwell Empire. It was reported back then that his hope was that she might marry a Kennedy and meld two great dynasties into one. Maxwell himself is the lord, uded as this great hero, he's come to save New York.
Starting point is 00:13:28 And so when Maxwell buys it, there's this extraordinary atmosphere. People burst into spontaneous dancing in the streets, and Maxwell's ego is just absolutely kind of, you know, thrilled to bits. One of Maxwell's curious things was he had this weakness for giving people incredibly overinflated titles. And there was a woman called Carolyn Hinsley who worked at the New York Daily News. And he said, young lady, you'll be my communications ambassador.
Starting point is 00:14:04 And I was like, no, I won't. No, I won't. No, no, no. But then I called the editor and he said I had to do it because the man had just bought the paper. When he realized the Daily News didn't have its own kitchen, he moved us to the Waldorf for $4,000 a night
Starting point is 00:14:17 to a huge suite where he could have many rooms. We could have an office. He had a kitchen, a dining room. The butler could serve him there. I remember at the Waldorf, there was an elevator, and you could go up to the roof. But if he didn't like somebody or they had made him mad, he would send them up in the elevator and then bring the elevator down
Starting point is 00:14:35 and trap them on the roof in the sun. And then they'd call down, like, an hour later, I'm still up here. And he would just be laughing that this jerk, this, you know, other names that he might use was stuck on the roof, and he enjoyed that. The first time Yalyn came sniffing around for a job, she wanted to be the fashion editor
Starting point is 00:14:59 of the New York Daily News, a newspaper that covered murders and sports. And I don't think she was used to being told no, because when Maxwell told her no, she seemed surprised. Like, but you just bought the paper. Why can't I have this job? Because the job doesn't exist and the editor doesn't want you.
Starting point is 00:15:14 That's why. And so about nine months after he buys the New York Daily News, he decides to go out for a cruise on the Lady Galen all by himself. The crew describes him on this vacation as being in a great mood. The BBC documentary Robert Maxwell Downfall shows extraordinary video taken by the crew during that trip. The video would give no clue that anything was wrong. Maxwell is out swimming.
Starting point is 00:15:47 Everything seems fine. But then in the morning they look for him and they cannot find him. It seems that in the night he has gone overboard. And it is a huge story. A body has been found in the sea off the Canaries. It would appear very much as if it is that of our father. Well, I mean, it marked a turning point for all of us. One of the most powerful publishers in the world has died, Robert Maxwell. He disappeared today from his yacht. While the official cause of death was a heart attack, a lot of people didn't buy it.
Starting point is 00:16:26 Nobody was sure what happened. Some thought it was an accident. Others thought suicide. Gillen, however, uniquely in our family, has always thought he was murdered. And she's alone in that. It's her profound conviction that that is what happened. The world's press basically flocked to the Canary Islands in the hope of finding out what had happened. It's Gilenne who takes the lead and she stands on the deck of
Starting point is 00:17:02 the boat that bears her name and gives a press conference. I want to thank the press for their courtesy and consideration. Robert Maxwell was Jewish and he was a big friend of Israel. His funeral took place in Jerusalem and then just a few weeks later this massive scandal drops. It was discovered that he had looted hundreds of millions of dollars from his employees' pension funds. What do you say about reports that some of the funds from the Mirror pension went missing after your father's death?
Starting point is 00:17:41 No comments on that. The total amount missing from the Mirror Pension Funds came to £763 million. Now his sons are trying to unravel the web of financial affairs the tycoon left behind. Two sons, Kevin and Ian, were actually tried for fraud in connection with the pension money, but they were acquitted and cleared of any wrongdoing.
Starting point is 00:18:04 Unfortunately, our father's business collapsed, and that caused all of my siblings, including Yulian, an enormous difficulty. They had to leave the family house. Yours, madam, thanks. And, you know, Maxwell's possessions were auctioned off. Humiliation doesn't come much more public than that. And 300, 320, at 350.
Starting point is 00:18:31 It was not a good time to be a Maxwell. That's certainly not in England. And life was unbearably cruel because the man she loved the most in the whole world was dead and he was disgraced and to bear his name was an extra disgrace on top of all of that. The next time I met her she seemed like a very different person someone who had changed overnight. She seemed broken. It was as if somebody had turned the lights and the volume off.
Starting point is 00:19:07 You can see why she gives up on London. She moves herself entirely to New York and into a one-room apartment. And then she met Jeffrey Epstein. I am so dreading groceries this week. Why? You can skip it. Oh what, just like that? Just like that. How about dinner with my third cousin?
Starting point is 00:19:34 Skip it. Prince Fluffy's favorite treats? Skippable. Midnight snacks? Skip. My neighbor's nightly saxophone practices? Er, nope. You're on your own there.
Starting point is 00:19:45 Coulda skipped it, shoulda skipped it. Skip to the good part and get groceries, meals, and more delivered right to your door on skip. Two freshly cracked eggs any way you like them. Three strips of naturally smoked bacon and a side of toast. Only $6 at A&W's in Ontario. Experience A&W's classic breakfast on Now, dine in only until 11 a.m.
Starting point is 00:20:15 Shortly before Christmas 1991, a journalist for the Vanity Fair visited Ghulain in her New York apartment and found her surrounded by newspaper cuttings about her father. He said he didn't recognize her. This glamorous woman that he had apparently known had somehow been transformed. She was pretty much on her own. She had a few friends. Were you worried about your sister at this time? I mean, Gillan's pretty resilient as a personality. She said, rather presciently as it turned out,
Starting point is 00:20:52 you haven't heard the last of the Maxwells. So it's about a year after her father's death when a tabloid reporter and photographer apparently spotted her. Galen is pictured at an airport, but a story that accompanied the photos notes that she was not by herself. The newspaper wrote, It is to this man that 30-year-old Galen has turned to ease the heartache of her father's shame. His name is Jeffrey Epstein.
Starting point is 00:21:23 I don't think she could have found a greater facsimile to her father than Jeffrey Epstein. He came from nothing. He talked his way into position after position. What was understood about Jeffrey at that time was that he was a former high school math teacher who had some sort of genius equation for solving the market and built himself up from like nowhere in Brooklyn. Epstein worked his way into a job on Wall Street at Bear Stearns and then somehow he connects
Starting point is 00:21:55 with Leslie Wexner. Leslie Wexner is a billionaire. He's the founder of The Limited Company. They own Victoria's Secret. He and Wexner apparently hit it off, and Epstein begins to tell people that he's a money manager for billionaires only. But at the time, the only publicly known client was Leslie Wexner. And what he does for that one client, I don't think anybody really totally knows
Starting point is 00:22:21 yet, but he becomes this ultra-rich, mega-rich guy. Glenn has been asked in depositions about how she met Jeffrey Epstein. When did you first meet Jeffrey? Some point in 1991. And did Jeffrey know your father? No. How were you introduced to Jeffrey? Some friend introduced us.
Starting point is 00:22:43 I had no knowledge of their life. Life that Gillan was leading in any great detail. I met him briefly. What were your impressions when you did? You can meet some people you really feel this is a great guy to have a drink with. I never had that impression but he was clearly an intelligent man and he was, he had a charisma. I actually saw them together for the first time in Palm Beach. You know, I was surprised. She spoke the Queen's English, and Jeffrey was quite the opposite.
Starting point is 00:23:13 He's from Brooklyn. He speaks Brooklyn. The question is, what drew them together? The theories are, his money, her Rolodex. Ghislaine brought a lot to the table as far as contacts. This is Jeffrey Epstein at a party in the Upper West Side, 1995. On the other end of the room was Galein with Prince Dmitri of Yugoslavia. You know, my father was an extraordinarily well-connected man, so she had grown up in that world and was, you know, able to move in it very freely. NBC unearthed this video from 1992 and it's taken at Mar-a-Lago. And in the foreground you see Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein, and in the background, there's Ghislaine Maxwell.
Starting point is 00:24:07 In 1993, just a year into Bill Clinton's presidency, Ghislaine Maxwell is pictured, along with Epstein and the president, at a donor's reception in the White House. She got back her old life. The limousines, the helicopters, the private jets. This woman who had lost everything because of a man, her father, suddenly had everything because of another man. But at the same time, with Epstein, what he wanted was women,
Starting point is 00:24:36 and in some cases increasingly younger women, according to some of the victims that have come forward in this case. It's around that time, starting in 1994, that federal prosecutors now say that Maxwell assisted Epstein in the sexual exploitation of underage girls. They allege that Maxwell helped Epstein to recruit, to groom, and ultimately abuse girls as young as 14. and ultimately abuse girls as young as 14. Gielan was 100% the lady of the house at Jeffreys.
Starting point is 00:25:10 He made that very clear. We knew who was in charge, and it was Gielan. Maria Farmer was a 25-year-old artist working as a receptionist at Jeffrey Epstein's New York townhouse, which is where she says she got to know Gilay Maxwell. I remember one day Gilay is asking me about my family, and I said, well, actually, I have the most amazing sister in the world,
Starting point is 00:25:34 and I'm telling Gilay that she's still in high school, she was a junior, then I said, I think she's ready to start looking at colleges soon. And then she had this great idea that I should talk to Jeffrey about Annie's education. And what I understood was that Maria had a very wealthy boss and that he might want to help me with school. Seems legitimate.
Starting point is 00:25:56 It seems like this is just this philanthropic couple that likes to help high achieving students out. Annie has alleged that Epstein invited her to his ranch in New Mexico for what she understood to be a meeting with a group of high achieving students. Epstein called my mom to talk a little bit about what would happen while I was there. As he said, there would be about 20 to 25 students. I asked Epstein at that point, who's going to be the chaperone, and he said, Gilan.
Starting point is 00:26:29 I arrived at the airport and there was a man with a little sign that had my name on it. It was the first time I'd ever experienced something like that. Annie gets there. There aren't all of these other kids. There is no school program. It's just Jeffrey, Ghislaine,
Starting point is 00:26:46 and now 16-year-old Annie Farmer. This is a picture I took of Annie. I got her ready for prom. So she's 16 here. When I look back at those photos now of myself at the time, I feel like I was a baby. And Jeffrey was calling. When she was getting ready for prom,
Starting point is 00:27:14 he was calling to talk to her. Annie Farmer is one of the underage victims at the center of the criminal case against Gillen Maxwell. Maxwell has pleaded not guilty. ABC News first spoke to Annie Farmer in 2019 about her experiences with Maxwell and Epstein and about what she says happened to her at his ranch in New Mexico. Can you just sort of describe the New Mexico property? The ranch was not in Santa Fe, you know, it was really in the middle of nowhere.
Starting point is 00:27:49 I think it might have actually been a temporary residence that they had while the main property was being developed. Upon arrival, your expectation was this was some kind of group thing for students. Right. So when you get there, it's not. So what you think was happening, then what did you see? It wasn't an immediate alarm. It was just sort of, OK, I guess this
Starting point is 00:28:13 is somewhat different than what I must have misunderstood. When I first met Gulan, she was very charming. She was witty and quick and instantly engaging in conversation. I remember I had, you know, brought some homework with me that I needed to work on and so I think I was actually doing paper about some British writers and so I remember talking to Gillian about that and I felt quickly comfortable with her and as a young woman I looked up to her as maybe an older sister type. We went shopping in Santa Fe and she took me to sort of a natural food store.
Starting point is 00:28:58 She was encouraging me to pick out things that I might like. You know, so it just felt like girl time together. The first thing that gave me pause was I were being in this living room area with Epstein and Maxwell and Maxwell telling me that Epstein really liked to get foot rubs and that it would be a good idea for me to learn how to massage this beat. I think if Epstein had been suggesting that, I would have been clearly alarmed. But because it was her, I was more open to that. They were really, really good at figuring out how to push boundaries so that I didn't say, no, I'm not going to do this. I just felt uneasy, but did it. The next thing I remember is we went to the movies
Starting point is 00:29:51 in a theater in Santa Fe, and we were kind of waiting around in the mall outside of the theater. And I remember Maxwell sort of acting like she was going to like pull Epstein's pants down. They were doing it with each other, they didn't do that to me, but it was weird. Epstein sat himself next to me and very quickly started holding my hand and caressing me and kind of touching my feet and my leg. He did not appear to be
Starting point is 00:30:21 hiding it from Gieland, which was odd to me. And he describes in court filings what she says happened next. She says Maxwell repeatedly insisted on giving her a massage. I lay on the table and I was very aware that the door was open and I could be seen getting a massage. And then at some point she just takes the sheet down so she, you know, exposed my breasts. And I feel uncomfortable. I feel like Evsine can probably see me right now. And she touches me around my chest,
Starting point is 00:31:00 but blurring the boundaries of normal or not normal. This was such a scary situation for me. So I just needed to like, just to manage that and to go on as if everything was normal. She is isolated on this ranch in New Mexico. She has no way to communicate with anyone. She's alone there with two adults. She does not know. She's
Starting point is 00:31:26 only 16 years old. I was sleeping in a small room. I was in my pajamas under the covers and Epstein just sort of bounded in and said, oh, I'd like to cuddle. Of course, he wasn't waiting for me to agree to that. He got into bed with me then. This was one of those boundary violations that was so clear. But knowing she's there, it makes me confused. Well, if they're partners, why? That doesn't make sense. Annie says that Epstein physically restrained her
Starting point is 00:31:56 and started pressing up against her. And she says she was frozen in fear. I do remember getting out of bed and getting into the bathroom and shutting the door. I didn't want to admit what was going on was going on. My sister never shared with me anything about what had happened with Guilin and Jeffrey. I didn't understand until much later. They thought it was okay to touch a 16-year-old, the person that I loved more than anyone in the world, and there is nothing okay about that.
Starting point is 00:32:33 In 2019, Annie Farmer filed a lawsuit against Jeffrey Epstein's estate and Ghislaine Maxwell. She eventually accepted an offer from the Epstein Victims Compensation Fund, which required her to drop the lawsuit. Gelen Maxwell's lawyers have said in court filings that Maxwell denies she was part of any of the activity that any farmer says took place. Looking back at the series of events now, it's just so clear how Maxwell was a really important part of the grooming process and they work together as a team, I think.
Starting point is 00:33:10 Annie Farmer is only one of a number of women who will make accusations about Gailen Maxwell, not all of them underage. She told me to give Jeffrey what he wants because Jeffrey always gets what he wants. He was behind the curtain, but she was the puppeteer, you know, orchestrating it all. ["The New York Times"] By the year 2000, Ghislaine Maxwell appears to have moved
Starting point is 00:33:43 to a $5 million mansion on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, about five blocks south of Jeffrey Epstein's mansion. He was in her life, for sure, but she was living in her place and he was being in his place, so they were not a couple in that sense. I do believe she fell in love with him to the point where she wanted to marry him. And it was Epstein who did not want to marry. At some point, their relationship became more of a business relationship where she has admitted
Starting point is 00:34:16 in depositions that she managed his far-flung properties. I hired assistants. I hired architects. I hired decorators. I hired cooks, I hired cleaners, I hired gardeners. Glenn was asked if she had ever hired massage therapists for Jeffrey Epstein. From time to time I would visit professional spas, I would receive a massage, and if the massage was good, I would ask that man or woman if they did home visits. We met at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills. This tall woman, polished, clean, cut, just comes waltzing in and said, Hi, my name is Gui Lin, nice to meet you.
Starting point is 00:35:02 Shante Davies was 21 years old training to be a massage therapist. And she says that one day she's asked by her instructor to come join her for a massage appointment. I mean, she was friendly and warm. She wanted to know where I was from, what my plans were for my life. So we finished our session. And then she offered to have me fly out for the weekend
Starting point is 00:35:25 to work as her masseuse in Palm Beach. I was 22 years old, and it was going to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, traveling the world, being a personal private massage therapist. Theresa Helm, who filed a lawsuit against Jeffrey Epstein's estate, says that she was also studying to be a masseuse in the early 2000s and that she was approached with a job offer to work
Starting point is 00:35:53 for a wealthy couple. I was told Ms. Maxwell was the one that would be who I'm hired for and you will go meet her in New York City and interview with her. I walked to Ms. Maxwell's townhouse. I was let in, and I was immediately directed to go up the stairs. She came out and she introduced herself to me, and you know, right away, she was very polite, she was well-spoken, and then it was like, okay, let's do the
Starting point is 00:36:26 massage now. There was a certain point where she fell asleep, so I'm thinking it's going really well. She then went on to tell me that there was a second part to the interview. You're going to go meet my partner, Jeffrey. And that was the first time I had heard anything about meeting anyone else. She told me to give Jeffrey what he wants because Jeffrey always gets what he wants. After we landed in Palm Beach, I just remember Gillian and I driving in the Mercedes with the top down and having this talk
Starting point is 00:36:58 on the way to the mansion. She was explaining that her partner was sort of the Ralph Lauren type and did I like that type. Getting out of the car as we pulled into the garage, she turned to me and said, just do whatever he likes and you won't have a problem. I walk up to this really elaborate door.
Starting point is 00:37:16 It seemed a very castle-like to me. So I was let in and Jeffrey said, come on with me to my office. And we walk into that office room, and then he asked me for a foot massage, and he puts his foot up on my leg. And I start giving him a foot massage. I got the massage table out and got it all set up.
Starting point is 00:37:39 Jeffrey came in, gave me a little once-over. I started the massage, and he was asking me questions, how I liked massage school. He flipped over, and he asked if I minded if he touched himself. And I freeze. I just, I remember being so confused.
Starting point is 00:38:01 I remember not knowing whether or not Guilin knew. I didn't know what to say. I said, sure. He starts pushing his foot closer and closer to me and to the point where his foot is literally pressing up against my body. He grabbed my chin and his hand and he said to me, I know I can always trust a woman who shows her gums when she smiles.
Starting point is 00:38:28 I was very scared. And so I get up from the couch and I start, you know, walking towards the door and he grabbed me from behind and I just completely froze and he assaulted me in the hallway. He's completely froze, and he assaulted me in the hallway. When I made it to the door, he said to me, don't do anything that I wouldn't do. I took that as a direct threat, you know. Teresa and Shante's stories end very differently. Teresa says that she never spoke to them again. Shante says that she continued to occasionally work for and travel with Epstein and Maxwell, and she says that Epstein sexually assaulted her
Starting point is 00:39:12 on multiple occasions. I had already come from a background in which I had been taught to accept abuse. It just became a situation where I just got deeper, deeper into it, and I didn't know how to pull myself out, really. I mean, now looking back, I definitely feel like how did I not see that Gielan was, you know, the puppeteer and it all?
Starting point is 00:39:38 Gielan Maxwell is a master manipulator. She knew how she was playing me. She knew how she was setting me. She knew how she was setting me up. She knew exactly that she was delivering me to the home of a predator. Theresa and Shante are not part of the criminal case against Ghislaine Maxwell. And they didn't file lawsuits against Maxwell. So Maxwell has never formally responded to their claims. But Maxwell has broadly denied any wrongdoing. Every allegation should be taken seriously.
Starting point is 00:40:11 But that doesn't mean every allegation should be believed without questioning, without scrutiny. Galen has never admitted to any wrongdoing because she's not done anything wrong. She's been fighting about this now in civil and criminal litigation, saying she's innocent. In 2020, Theresa Helm accepted an offer from Epstein's Victims Compensation Fund and agreed to withdraw her lawsuit against Jeffrey Epstein's estate.
Starting point is 00:40:39 Gwylen Maxwell was able to live with relative anonymity, but all of that is about to change. Next to night, disturbing allegations. A woman claims that Maxwell groomed her to be a sex slave to Epstein and was trafficked to some of his most powerful associates. She has a photograph in Gielin Maxwell's apartment with Prince Andrew. This is a terrific tale.
Starting point is 00:41:00 Cruella de Vil, the daughter of Bob Maxwell. Let's add another president here. Let's add a prince there. It's a concoction. An invention. Galen holds the keys. She's the keeper of many secrets. Can I ask you about all the allegations that have come out, Galen? Happy New Year. Do you know Virginia? As you learn Maxwell's story, it's a fairy tale the wrong way around. The fairy tale princess starts life in a palace and she ends up where she is now, in a kind of dungeon. Lawyers of victims say that she was his main accomplice in an international sex trafficking scheme.
Starting point is 00:42:42 Is it true that you have had underage females for orgies with you and Glyn Maxwell? They're still out there with no punishment, starting with Glyn Maxwell. Virginia said that this carried on for years, that Jeffrey and Glyn made her their sex slave. This is not my sister. Glyn is not Epstein.
Starting point is 00:43:03 That explosive scandal rocking the royal family. Ghislaine tells me that I have to do for Andrew what I do for Jeffrey. That made me sick. I don't remember that photograph ever being taken. All of us were playing this game, where in the world is Gillian Maxwell? It looked like she was hiding.
Starting point is 00:43:20 She was not hiding. That's a complete lie. She's the keeper of many secrets. People want answers. And we're not going to get them unless we ask Ghislaine Maxwell. In the early 2000s, Ghislaine Maxwell was almost a full-time gal about town. Whenever there was an event, Ghislaine was being photographed. You just see an explosion of picture after picture after picture.
Starting point is 00:43:55 It's just a cavalcade of Ghislaine. She's everywhere with everybody. People wanted to see her and be around her and so on. It seemed to me that she was in her element and getting on and I was really, I was pleased for her. As the daughter of a media magnate, she's got access to the rich and powerful. She's friends with Prince Andrew.
Starting point is 00:44:19 She's inside the palace with Kevin Spacey sitting on Thrones. She's on a plane with President Clinton. She's side by side with Donald Trump. Obviously the photographs didn't tell everything. She had another life, a more private life, that only came to light later. Gillen Maxwell was Jeffrey Epstein's major domo.
Starting point is 00:44:45 She was his confidant. She was his aide de camp. She traveled with him everywhere. But at the same time, lawyers of victims say that she was his main accomplice in an international sex trafficking scheme, that she was recruiting these underage girls and abusing them herself. But no one knew what was really going on.
Starting point is 00:45:09 The first time that somebody makes an accusation about Jeffrey Epstein that someone pays attention to is in Palm Beach in 2005. A 14-year-old girl said that she'd gone to Epstein's home to give him a massage and that sexual contact had occurred. The Palm Beach police began an investigation. They bring in victims and they start interviewing them. Did he offer you more money to do more things? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:45:41 A hundred or more just in show. They come up with the same pattern, that they go to his house, they go to the kitchen, and then they're led upstairs to his bedroom, and then he comes in in a towel, they rub his back or his feet for a little bit, and then eventually he turns over nude and then proceeds to lure and sexually assault them. They were all telling us that they had either been recruited by an older female to them, meaning someone over 18, somebody in their 20s, or by someone who had already been a victim.
Starting point is 00:46:22 It was a whole network working together to solicit and bring these girls into his home. Ghislaine Maxwell says that at the time of the police investigation in Palm Beach, she was very rarely in Florida. Ghislaine said that her role in his life was greatly reduced compared to what it was. Investigators certainly knew that Glenn Maxwell was associated with him. There were phone messages. She would call him, leave messages for him. But investigators never developed any information at that point that she was involved in this. A South Florida billionaire has been arrested on prostitution charges.
Starting point is 00:47:06 53-year-old Jeffrey Epstein was arrested in Palm Beach where investigators say he paid women to have sex with him in his mansion. Epstein was charged by a grand jury with one count of solicitation of a prostitute. No mention of underage victims or minors. Palm Beach police said they had found multiple alleged victims of Jeffrey Epstein, and they were not pleased with this single charge. They immediately contacted the FBI
Starting point is 00:47:36 and said, here, maybe you can do something with this. But on June 30, 2008, we learned that Epstein has somehow cut a deal. The deal? That there would be no federal charges. Epstein would just quietly plead in state court to one count of solicitation of prostitution and one count of solicitation of a minor. He served only 13 months in Palm Beach County Jail. At this point, Epstein is a convicted sex offender, but Maxwell did not completely cut ties with him.
Starting point is 00:48:17 She's acknowledged in a deposition that even after he went to jail, she occasionally did some work for him at his properties. Why did you continue to maintain contact with Jeffrey Epstein after he pled guilty? I'm a very loyal person, and Jeffrey was very good to me when my father passed away. And I felt that it was a very thoughtful, nice thing for me to do to help in very limited fashion. Many of the victims, very angry at the process, filed civil lawsuits against Jeffrey Epstein. As the civil cases are winding through the courts, the victims' lawyers discover Gilen was a bigger part of Jeffrey's life than anybody had thought before. It was in the summer of 2009 when Virginia Roberts filed her lawsuit under the pseudonym Jane Doe 102.
Starting point is 00:49:13 Jane Doe 102 said that Ghislaine had recruited her when she had been working at Mar-a-Lago, Trump's resort, and as a changing room assistant. And Ghislaine makes this offer, you want to give a rich guy a massage in Palm Beach. And Virginia is then taken to Jeffrey Epstein. Virginia said that Jeffrey and Gillen made her their sex slave. The lawsuit was the first time that Glenn was mentioned as one of Jeffrey Epstein's
Starting point is 00:49:50 main accomplices. Glenn became more of a focus for us, the civil attorneys who were prosecuting the civil cases. Is it true that you have had underage females for orgies with you and Glenn Maxwell? I would like to answer that question. I really would. ["The Black Sedan"] At the crack of dawn Wednesday, a black sedan sped away from the Palm Beach County jail.
Starting point is 00:50:26 Its passenger, Palm Beach billionaire Jeffrey Epstein. After a year in jail, Epstein is a free man. His attorney says he is ready to move on. While Jeffrey's the target of this massive investigation, Glenn emerged from this relatively unscathed. She continued living her life as she had. Gelen Maxwell had not been publicly linked to any of the allegations against Jeffrey Epstein,
Starting point is 00:50:51 but then came that lawsuit from Jane Doe 102, also known as Virginia Roberts-Jufray. She was alleging that Gelen was an active participant in the sexual abuse of minors. In this lawsuit, Virginia is not suing Ghislaine Maxwell. She's suing Jeffrey Epstein. But now when Epstein is deposed and other people are deposed in the lawsuit, suddenly the plaintiff's lawyers have a reason to dig. They have a reason to ask about Ghislaine Maxwell.
Starting point is 00:51:26 Can you tell us your full name for the record? Jeffrey Edward Epstein. During the depositions, he invoked his Fifth Amendment right to remain silent every time. Another longtime friend of yours is Ghislaine Maxwell, right? Ghislaine Maxwell and you have devised several schemes to lure underage girls to you for sex. Isn't that correct? Is it true that you have had underage females for orgies with you and Glenn Maxwell?
Starting point is 00:51:54 Is it true, Mr. Epstein, that you and Glenn Maxwell forced Virginia Roberts to have sex with you on a daily basis? Unfortunately, at this time, no matter how I'd like to respond to your questions, I must assert my 6th Amendment, 5th Amendment, and 14th Amendment rights under the U.S. Constitution. I also am deposing Epstein's staff and former staff trying to find answers. One of the few witnesses who actually answers the lawyer's questions is Alfredo Rodriguez. Do you swear the testimony you're about to give
Starting point is 00:52:30 should be the truth or the truth and nothing but the truth? Yes, I do. One of Jeffrey Epstein's former butlers, Alfredo Rodriguez, worked for Jeffrey before he had been arrested by Palm Beach police. Even though Glenn says that she was not involved in Jeffrey's life in Palm Beach police. Even though Gilen says that she was not involved in Jeffrey's life in Palm Beach around the time of the investigation,
Starting point is 00:52:50 based on Alfredo's testimony, there's a different story here. He described Gilen as the lady of the house. What he says essentially is that even though Gilen was not a physical presence very often in Florida, she was still very much running the house. Alfredo was asked, did Ghislaine know that underage girls were coming to Jeffrey Epstein's house? And Alfredo answered, Ghislaine knew what was going on.
Starting point is 00:53:21 Do you know whether Ms. Maxwell kept the names and telephone numbers of the girls who came to do massages? Excuse me. It eventually turns up that Alfredo Rodriguez has kept a copy of what has now infamously been labeled the black book. It was just a stack of computerized sheets with addresses and names that Epstein kept in all of his homes. Alfredo Rodriguez tried to sell a copy of the supposed black book to one of the plaintiff's lawyers for $50,000. And he got arrested.
Starting point is 00:53:59 He went to jail. The little black book contains the names not only of masseuses in different cities, but the names and phone numbers of very prominent, rich and powerful people. Presidents, heads of state, heads of industry. There appeared to be a lot of friends of Glenn's from Oxford and England and America. I wanted to talk to Ghislaine. We actually had process servers up in New York trying to find her. The day before I was to take Ghislaine's deposition,
Starting point is 00:54:41 she threw her lawyer, canceled, with the explanation that she was leaving to go see her mother over in Europe and never to return to the country. A short period later, I see in a magazine that she's front and center at Chelsea Clinton's wedding, clearly in the country. I was told repeatedly, she's never coming back. By the time of Chelsea Clinton's wedding, Jeffrey Epstein had settled his lawsuit with Jane Doe 102 or Virginia Roberts-Jufray. So it made a little bit of a headline
Starting point is 00:55:19 that suddenly Gillian Maxwell is accused of participating, but then it just, you know, it goes away. So it seemed at the time that was the end of it. But Virginia's story will be impossible to ignore. It doesn't die, it comes back. She has a photograph of herself in Ghislaine Maxwell's apartment, where it is her, Ghislaine, and Prince Andrew
Starting point is 00:55:43 in the photograph that's being taken by Jeffrey Epstein, and she's only 17 years old. Can I ask you about all the allegations that have come out, Ghislaine? Happy New Year. Do you know Virginia? Can you at least say if she's been in your house? My passion for the ocean started when I was a little girl. I grew up watching Jacques Cousteau on TV and became mesmerized with the oceans. It led to me becoming a deep worker submersible pilot. In 2012, Gillen forms a nonprofit company
Starting point is 00:56:27 called TerraMar. She started TerraMar really to educate people, in particular children, about how the oceans needed to be protected. Doing a pretty good job, I think. So how does it all look? Is my hair good? Gillen appears in a video series called One on One,
Starting point is 00:56:46 shown on HuffPost, in which she talks about the preservation of the oceans. The ocean is absolutely vital to all planetary life systems. I call it the blue heart of the planet. So she wasn't only a socialite who was well connected, she was now an environmental advocate who cared about the oceans. And then in 2015, she hits the news cycle for an altogether different reason. Now to the growing royal scandal on the cover of every paper.
Starting point is 00:57:20 The Virginia Roberts-Jufray allegations are now back and front and center. In new court filings in a lawsuit against the U.S. government for making the deal with Epstein, Jufray goes into greater detail on her allegations about Maxwell's role in Epstein's alleged sex trafficking. Virginia Roberts claims Gailen Maxwell was basically her madam. She makes for the very first time in court very specific allegations that Epstein and Gillen Maxwell directed her to have sex with Prince Andrew on three
Starting point is 00:57:56 occasions. Years later Virginia would tell the BBC about what she says happened. Gillen tells me that I have to do for Andrew what I do for Jeffrey. And that made me sick. The next day, Gielin tells me I did a really good job. She pats me on the back and said, you made him really happy. Buckingham Palace issued a statement on Prince Andrew's behalf saying,
Starting point is 00:58:27 it is emphatically denied the prince had any form of sexual contact or relationship with Juffre. People really started to put the microscope on Ghislaine. Ask you about all the allegations that have come out, Ghislaine. Happy New Year. Obviously they're very damning, involving British royalty. Have you got no comment at all? I made a statement, thank you.
Starting point is 00:58:53 Ghislaine Maxwell, through an agent, releases a statement that says Virginia's allegations are not true, that they are obvious lies. Do you know Virginia? Can you at least say if she's been in your house? Okay, you're obviously not going to speak, so have a good day. I'm wishing you a happy new year. Thank you. You too. Thank you. She actually starts consulting with Jeffrey Epstein.
Starting point is 00:59:18 She writes him an email, and Jeffrey replies, You have done nothing wrong, and I would urge you to start acting like it. Go outside, head high, not as an escaping convict. Go to parties, deal with it. A judge decided that Jouffre's allegations about Maxwell didn't belong in the case against the U.S. government. So what happened next? Virginia Roberts Jouffre takes the fight
Starting point is 00:59:44 directly to Ghislaine Maxwell with a defamation lawsuit for calling her claims obvious lies. All bets were off. You're now being litigated against, and once you're subpoenaed, you got to show up. A deposition is like testimony. You are under oath.
Starting point is 01:00:09 Anything you say can then be used against you in future proceedings. There were two depositions. Both were sealed until a court ordered them to be released last year. We don't have audio or video, but we do have the transcripts. Did Jeffrey Epstein have a scheme to recruit underage girls for sexual massages? I don't know what you're talking about. When I was there, at the time I was present,
Starting point is 01:00:38 the people that gave Jeffrey, men and women who gave Jeffrey massages, were adults over the age of 18. Ghislaine Maxwell presents a fairly black and white version of events. This never happened. Well, I didn't see anything. I never saw any inappropriate underage activities with Jeffrey, ever. Maxwell accused Choufray of inventing details to, quote, make the story more exciting.
Starting point is 01:01:08 You know she lied about absolutely everything. She is a liar, an exaggerator, a fantasist, and an absolutely true, terrible person. Maxwell claims she would barely remember Virginia at all if not for the allegations. Although according to flight records, someone with the initials GM had been on Epstein's planes with Virginia more than 20 times. When Virginia's lawyers ask, well, you were on a plane with Virginia, Gillen says, oh, a G and an M listed in the flight records, that could be somebody else. Is it your testimony that on the flight logs when it represents GM that it is not you flying on the plane? It could be Georgina. George. This was a very contentious
Starting point is 01:01:51 deposition. At one point in the deposition, Gile Maxwell says, I have to object. Lawyers just love it when the client jumps in and starts lawyering on their own behalf. Let's move on. I'm in charge of the deposition, say when we move on and when we don't. Just one day before this defamation trial is set to begin, Maxwell and Joufray settle the case with no admission of wrongdoing.
Starting point is 01:02:21 Gillay Maxwell has not been criminally charged in connection with Jouffre's allegations. Now with her legal matter with Jouffre settled, Maxwell appears to be making changes in her life. Gillen Maxwell has begun to withdraw from her life in New York City. She was on page six anymore. She wasn't on page six anymore. She wasn't at the Met Gala. And she sells her New York City Upper East Side apartment
Starting point is 01:02:52 for $15 million. The social chameleon Gillen is the social chameleon. She continues to reinvent herself. She is basically starting a completely new life. And she has a secret. There's a spouse that nobody knew about. All of us were like, what? Glenn is married? Who is her husband? This episode is brought to you by Dyson On Track. In the year 2016, Gelen Maxwell apparently leaves New York for the quiet, idyllic life on the coast of Massachusetts in Manchester by the Sea. Which would be kind of the last place you would think she would be. Nobody knew it then, but we now know she was married in 2016. Glenn Maxwell is a wife.
Starting point is 01:04:54 She's a stepmom. What was it like to find out that she was married and she'd never told you? Well, I mean, it was, um, surprising, I think, I would say. Why do you think it was, though, that she did keep her marriage a secret, even from her family? Gillen took the view that she's entitled to a private life and she's going to have it, and it is going to be private, and including from her own family. That's okay. I'm all right with that. I don't see that's so wrong. The last time I saw her was June 10, 2019, here in London.
Starting point is 01:05:32 It was the last time that all of my siblings were together and it was a very happy occasion for all of us. And then all of a sudden. Multi-millionaire Jeffrey Epstein was arrested Saturday... At a New Jersey airport... In an undercover operation... He was accused of trafficking girls in Florida and New York. I never dreamed that he would be arrested.
Starting point is 01:05:57 I just couldn't believe that Jeffrey Epstein was really in custody. Because in my mind, he had, had through the years almost convinced me that he really was untouchable. The prosecutors charged him in a conspiracy which means he didn't do this by himself. Authorities were going to start investigating anybody who worked for Epstein and who might have abused these girls. I do feel relief, but having said that, there's still a very powerful feeling of, okay, what's going to happen next? Like, how is he going to get out of this, basically?
Starting point is 01:06:33 Thanks for joining us. We are coming on the air with breaking news. Sources tell ABC News Jeffrey Epstein took his own life. There are mounting calls for an investigation. Who's to blame for the system's failure? For many people, after Jeffrey Epstein died, the focus shifted to Maxwell. For some victims, the focus was always primarily on Maxwell. This is breaking news.
Starting point is 01:06:58 A chance for dozens of Jeffrey Epstein accusers to have their voices heard in court before the sex trafficking case against the late financier comes to an end. It's very unusual to have victims give impact statements after the defendant is dead, but these alleged victims had been wronged for a lot of years. I had to really make the decision if I was going to get up and speak in the courthouse. Maybe halfway through the hearing, a few people started mentioning Gillian Maxwell's name and how she was part of this operation and was somebody that needed to face justice. It makes me sick to my stomach that there's perpetrators out there
Starting point is 01:07:40 that obviously helped him in many ways for a very long time, and they're still out there with no punishment. We need to get to the bottom of everybody who was involved with that, starting with Gielin Maxwell. I just hope there's justice and I hope there's accountability and I hope there's significant consequence for the behavior of Gillan Maxwell. So Epstein is dead. The crimes he was then indicted with in 2019, he'd never faced.
Starting point is 01:08:11 But Gillan is not Epstein. With his death, the focus began to bear down more on Gillan. And where was she? The real problem is that the media frenzy about her. You would pick up the newspaper, the Daily Mail, doesn't matter what it is. It's the same old rubbish. So that's all that the public has ever heard. They've never heard the defense to all of this. I mean people want answers. People want answers and we're not gonna get them now that Jeffrey Epstein is dead,
Starting point is 01:08:46 unless we ask Gillian Maxwell. So we've got to find her. But Gillian Maxwell isn't going to make life easy for them. It's the family story that fascinated me, and as a storyteller, I thought, I want to tell this story. That's why I did the podcast. She's got three passports, British, French, and American. A fortune of roughly $20 million,
Starting point is 01:09:10 a kaleidoscope with bank accounts. All of us were playing this game, where in the world is Ghislaine Maxwell? The theories ran rampant. She was hiding in a submarine. She was walking the streets of Paris with a blanket over her head. Some people said she was in a high-security doomsday bunker. So it was just like one unbelievable scenario
Starting point is 01:09:33 after another. The Sun newspaper put a 10,000-pound reward on her head for information leading to a sighting of her. I mean, can you imagine that? It's incredible. All kinds of questions arose because of all the attention placed on Gillen. So if you're gonna place attention on Gillen's alleged role,
Starting point is 01:09:56 then Prince Andrew's name figures in a very prominent way. Prince Andrew decides he's gonna go on the BBC Newsnight and defend his reputation and his honor and give an interview. This was a highly anticipated interview. And in it, he talks about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. He says he was unaware of Epstein's activities
Starting point is 01:10:18 with underage girls. He denied that he had any sexual contact with Virginia Jouffre and said he had no memory of ever meeting her. I have no recollection of ever meeting this lady. None whatsoever. And he suggested that the photograph may have been faked. Nobody can prove whether or not that that photograph has
Starting point is 01:10:42 been doctored. But I don't recollect that photograph ever being taken. The interview turned out to be a total disaster, forcing the prince to resign from his official duties. One year after Jeffrey Epstein's arrest, almost a year after his death, and there's dozens of victims out there, and no one else has been arrested.
Starting point is 01:11:04 Who could be next? Ultimately, the FBI had been discreetly keeping track of her the entire time. And where the FBI found her, no one could have guessed. It turns out that Glenn Maxwell had recently moved into this very small town in central New Hampshire called Bradford. It's really out of the way. So much so that the estate that she was living in was actually called Tucked Away. We learned she had slithered away to a gorgeous property in New Hampshire, continuing to live a life of privilege
Starting point is 01:11:50 while her victims lived with the trauma inflicted upon them years ago. On the morning of July 2, FBI agents knock on the door. Gillen doesn't open it. Authorities have to bust open the door to arrest her. She immediately went into a sort of interior room and that she had a cell phone with tin foil wrapped around it, presumably so it couldn't be trapped.
Starting point is 01:12:12 We begin with the FBI's arrest of Jeffrey Epstein's longtime associate, Gillian Maxwell. In the United States, we've been calling him Gillian Maxwell. Gillian Maxwell. Maxwell. Maxwell. Maxwell. The famous social流ian Maxwell. Ghislaine Maxwell. Maxwell. Maxwell. Maxwell. The famous social流, Maxwell.
Starting point is 01:12:28 She's arrested with hoopla, with helicopters and the FBI running about. It's pure prejudice. It looked like she had... She was hiding. That was what it looked like. She was not hiding. That's a complete lie. Her lawyers knew exactly where she was at all times.
Starting point is 01:12:49 Today we announced charges against Ghislaine Maxwell for helping Jeffrey Epstein sexually exploit and abuse multiple minor girls from the period of 1994 through 1997. Gillan Maxwell was the first step in a grooming process, and that's what the indictment reflects. Maxwell played a critical role in helping Epstein to identify, befriend, and groom minor victims for abuse. In some cases, Maxwell participated in the abuse herself.
Starting point is 01:13:26 The U.S. Attorney said she delivered them into the trap. She pretended to be a woman they could trust, and all the while she was setting them up. Maxwell's presence as an adult woman helped put the victims at ease. There are three unnamed victims in the indictment. There are three unnamed victims in the indictment. Annie Farmer is the only alleged victim to identify herself publicly. She spoke to the court via video conference and later shared what she said with us. I met Keelyne Maxwell when I was 16 years old. She has never shown any remorse for her heinous crimes or for the devastating lasting impact
Starting point is 01:14:03 her actions have caused. Maxwell has also been hit with perjury charges related to those civil depositions she gave back in 2016. Maxwell compounded her crimes by repeatedly lying when she was questioned under oath. Maxwell lied because the truth, as alleged, was almost unspeakable. Glenn Maxwell has pleaded not guilty to all the charges against her. We're talking some pretty serious accusations.
Starting point is 01:14:40 As a brother, how did you feel when you heard that your sister was being accused of these things? I was shocked, tremendously shocked. You're correct, these are very serious charges. But at the same time, I also thought this is not my sister. She could not possibly have been involved in this kind of activity. She wouldn't have even been charged had she not been associated with Epstein. Epstein died. They need someone.
Starting point is 01:15:16 Let's be honest about what's going on here. If there was real evidence, she would have been charged long ago. Glenn Maxwell is scheduled to go before a judge today to find out if she will be granted release on bond. More than a dozen friends and relatives wrote letters to the court as part of her bail application in support of Ghislaine Maxwell. They wrote that she is, quote, kind and caring, and, quote, she would not be capable of such behavior.
Starting point is 01:15:42 Maxwell also got a show of support from none other than the President of the United States. I just wish her well, frankly. I've met her numerous times over the years, but I wish her well. Why keep her in custody? She's proposed the highest bail package that I've ever seen, 28.5 million.
Starting point is 01:16:01 She's offered to renounce her foreign citizenship. But it wasn't enough for the judge. Bail was denied in this case. This former socialite is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where inmates have complained about inhumane conditions. The feds have egg on their face because Jeffrey Epstein was able to kill himself in jail, and now they're watching Glenn Maxwell's every move. I've visited Glenn Maxwell at the jail, and anybody who would see the conditions she's under would be shocked. She's stuck in a small 6x9 room. She's basically kept in solitary confinement,
Starting point is 01:16:46 unless you count the rats and the cockroaches as roommates. She's constantly under surveillance. She has a flashlight shone in her cell every 15 minutes during the night, so she has no sleep of any real quality. And that is torture. I think people watching will say, that was incredible what happened to Jeffrey Epstein.
Starting point is 01:17:13 They've got to make sure the same thing does not happen again. Jeffrey Epstein was a convicted offender. My sister has never been charged in any jurisdiction in the world, ever. Just take five-sixths and think about it and say, God, what would happen if it was my sister? The Bureau of Prisons has defended itself and said she's being treated the way a defendant of her stature should be treated.
Starting point is 01:17:40 With questions raised about Maxwell's treatment, is it possible she could cut a deal with prosecutors? The government is absolutely trying to break her, to make sure that she can't prepare for trial. The question is going to be, do we learn more about any alleged actions of some very high-profile people? I guarantee you right now, there are a lot of powerful people, men, who are quaking in their boots. Glenn holds the keys. She's the keeper of many secrets.
Starting point is 01:18:30 Tonight, Ghislaine Maxwell is facing new federal charges of child sex trafficking. In March of 2021, the prosecutors filed what is called a superseding indictment, meaning an additional indictment with an additional victim. Prosecutors accusing her of trafficking a 14-year-old girl in the early 2000s, a fourth underage alleged victim in the case. And this fourth alleged victim goes back to the early 2000s and to Epstein's Palm Beach mansion. The government claims that Maxwell was present when the girl was nude in Epstein's massage room and that Maxwell encouraged the girl to recruit other young females to provide sexualized massages to Epstein. She appeared in a courtroom for the first time since her arrest last July
Starting point is 01:19:16 and her defense attorney entered a not guilty plea on her behalf. She appeared to be much different than we've ever seen her before. More frail, older looking, sunken eyes, graying hair. Galena is in very, very, very difficult conditions. I've never seen anything like it, how she's being treated. I don't believe that there is any credible evidence on any basis whatsoever to assert that Ms. Maxwell is the victim. You cannot predict the outcome of Gilliam Maxwell's upcoming trial.
Starting point is 01:19:59 This is going to be, as a legal matter, a challenge for prosecutors. Any case like this, where you're gonna be relying on witness testimony of events that occurred 20 or 30 years ago, is not gonna be an easy case. I think prosecutors are confident in the strength of their case and the testimony of the four alleged victims. They also tell us though their investigation continues.
Starting point is 01:20:23 So if there are other women who believe they've been victimized by Ghislaine Maxwell, they're encouraged to come forward to the FBI. I'm just asking people wait till the trial. People shouldn't make up their mind just yet. Let's see what people say under oath and after they're cross-examined. There is an enormous amount of intrigue around this case. And the question is going to be, do we learn more about any alleged actions of some very high-profile people? People talk about secrets that Gillen might have on all kinds of famous people. What do you feel when you hear rumors like that?
Starting point is 01:21:08 I think it's ludicrous. It's part of this whole fake jamboree of news and speculation. All this chatter out there about what else she knows, who else she could implicate. Judge ordering the release of what could be thousands of pages of documents. New details are emerging about how she remained in the she could implicate. Judge ordering the release of what could be thousands of pages of documents. New details are emerging about how she remained in the shadows for so long.
Starting point is 01:21:29 Do you see why there might be little public sympathy for her? Well, the press have decided that, well, you know, she's guilty. Hell no, she's not. She is presumed innocent. Someone has to stand up for Gillen and say, wait a minute, these are allegations. Nothing has been proven. Many of the victims hold Gillen more responsible than Jeffrey for enabling his conduct.
Starting point is 01:22:00 Gillen Maxwell is not a replacement for Jeffrey Epstein, not even the slightest bit. Her crimes and her, you know, wrongdoing, she has made herself complicit. She is a criminal. She's a predator. Is there some tiny part of you, is it possible on any level, that you just don't know your sister that well? That there's a side of her that you just never knew?
Starting point is 01:22:32 You know, I think that's true of absolutely everyone in the world. We never know each other really. I think we've got a very good feeling and I really don't have that doubt. I do believe that she is innocent of these charges completely. It's fascinating to see who is the real Gillen. Are the accusations against her true? Ultimately, the fate of Gillen Maxwell will lay in the hands of a jury. And that's as it should be.
Starting point is 01:23:30 You've been listening to the 2020 True Crime Vault. Friday nights at 9 on ABC, you can also find all new broadcast episodes of 2020. Thanks for listening. Fifty years ago, a young woman named Karen Silkwood got into her car alone. She was reportedly on her way to deliver sensitive documents to a New York Times reporter. Bluntly stated, she was spying on her employer, gathering evidence her union wanted to document charges of safety violations at the Kermagee Corporation's nuclear plant. Karen never made it to that meeting with the reporter. Do you think somebody killed her?
Starting point is 01:24:04 There's no question in my mind someone killed her that night. I think they were trying to stop her in order to get the documents. And those documents she agreed to deliver were never found. 50 years later we tracked down fragments of Silkwood's story including a trove of never-before-heard investigative tapes. Mike, you found it. Holy cow, I got goosebumps. And we learned the accident investigators saved something from the crash. Something he believed was a smoking gun. He told his daughter on his deathbed to hang on to it. We have the bumper. Something's not right with this story. I think it needs to be looked into further.
