Starting point is 00:00:00 W.MI.X Sports in Kentucky. I think it's Kentucky. It must be Kentucky. No, Southern Illinois. Excuse me. But they sent in a raccoon story about a raccoon visiting the Kentucky legislature. Oh, gosh. Must be Kentucky.
Starting point is 00:00:22 Sorry, Southern Illinois. Welcome to it. Another edition of 32 Thoughts, the podcast. Elliot, Dom, Kyle, back with you. Elliot, first question, what do the Columbus Blue Jackets and Ottawa senators have in common, at least on Thursday night? They both play in the National Hockey League. But they did not on Thursday. Fifteen games in action across the board.
Starting point is 00:00:48 They were the only two teams not playing. And there were some crazy games to get to. Not the ones you and I worked or the one that Dom was working in Vancouver on Thursday, but there were some wild finishes, some unbelievable scenes leaving the ice, some milestones. We had another hat trick, all of it, comebacks, you name it.
Starting point is 00:01:11 Where would you like to start after Thursday's action? Go ahead. I drove home from our studio after Toronto, Seattle, our regional coverage at about 1 a.m. Eastern Time Friday morning. And do you know what the temperature gauge said on my car? Cool. Did it start with a minus and a two? Just under. I think it got as cold as minus 17. Oh.
Starting point is 00:01:41 I said this before. I will say it again. I am sick of winter. My two days this week in Tampa were a welcome reprieve. As I was driving home tonight, as a matter of fact, there was. Dom. It was 10 degrees in Vancouver today. Wonderful, Dom. But you know what the bad thing is for the people of Vancouver? You're there with them. That is not worth a 30-degree swing. Oh, gosh. How was it in Seattle, Kyle? It was similar to Vancouver, but it was gray, drizzly on Thursday, but still going for a walk in the morning. I'm like, this is beautiful. Oh, yeah. That was beautiful.
Starting point is 00:02:30 So nice. That's good. Go get a coffee. Well, I mean, look. Well, yeah, I had a good coffee? Yeah, I did. Hit up a favorite here in the city and then it was all day at the rink. Nice.
Starting point is 00:02:45 Okay. So, I mean, you take a look at all of these games that happened. Carolina down four to two in the whalers jerseys to Utah. they were down 4-2 with two minutes to go, and they won in regulation. This was after a few people on the Lightning told me how good they think Utah is because they just played them.
Starting point is 00:03:13 And they were like, that's a good team. Fast, really good team. And then Utah basically called Tampa Liars by not holding on to that lead at the end of the game. Detroit, Washington, bananas. highest scoring U.S. born player of all time.
Starting point is 00:03:33 First time it happens, it gets wiped out in an offside review. By the way, that reminds me great promotion by the Cracken that if you threw your hat on the Jared McCann
Starting point is 00:03:49 hat trick that didn't count because that one was also wiped out, you have a chance to get another hat back. That is a great promotion. Yes. That is a five-star upper-deck home run call by the Cracken. And for the Cracken fans out there that are going,
Starting point is 00:04:12 what the heck was with that whole call to begin with? We'll get into that in the thought line a little bit later, so stay tuned. Okay. Thank you for reminding us. So Detroit, Washington, first Cain sets the record, gets it taken away, then he sets it again, this time for good. In the third period, Detroit ties it in the last minute on a shot that went off the area around the photographer hole.
Starting point is 00:04:35 Now, if it actually goes in the hole or hits the camera, it's no goal. But they rule it didn't do that, so it counts. From what I could tell that was the correct call, I have to admit, I was still working, I was working Toronto, Seattle at the time, so I didn't see all of it. From what I saw, it looked like the right call. But then you're going now. Logan Thompson's already not playing because he got hit with a puck off the mask. And Charlie Lindgren gets injured right at the end of overtime and can barely stand for the shootout. Now, Clay Stevenson is their third goalie. I like him.
Starting point is 00:05:17 But the Capitals made the decision they didn't want him to get hurt sitting there for three hours and then going in for the shootout. The shootout was hilarious. made a save. Like Lindgren was basically hoping one of the Red Wings would hit him. And no goal he made a save. And then Larkin hits the crossbar. So the Red Wings unfortunately lose. And then a bunch of capitals are going to celebrate with Nick Dowd, a popular teammate who's never scored in the shootout before while John Carlson is helping Lingering get off the ice.
Starting point is 00:05:51 And then Justin Sardiff joins them. And that incredible shot, that was a great shot that ESPN got with their hallway cam of the two of them helping them into the dressing room. Charlie Lindgren, I will always be a fan of yours. Always after that tonight. Like what a big guts performance that was. You know what someone sent me a text that reminded them of? Byron Leftwich, the former NFL quarterback for Jacksonville, when he was in college at Marshall, he played a bowl game once where he got hurt and he heard his leg. And as they were completing passes, Kyle, his linemen were grabbing him and carrying him downfield.
Starting point is 00:06:41 Oh, wow. You can watch the highlights of that. It's an incredible performance. It's the exact same thing. Like they're just, he'd complete a pass, two linemen would grab him and they'd carry him down field so he could get to the line of scrimmage for the next play. Jeez. It was a perfect memory.
Starting point is 00:07:00 So that was an incredible game. And, you know, all of a sudden you're wondering what the Capitals guy, Logan Thompson, of course, Team Canada, puck hitting the mask. You're kind of wondering, okay, is that something he's just going to have to see how long it takes to recover from? You're wondering if it's concussion like symptoms or something. I don't know. But you hope he's okay and you hope he's going to be able to play. By the way, Jack Hughes got hurt again. And although Sheldon Key said he didn't think it was serious,
Starting point is 00:07:32 and Brad Marchand missed the end of Florida, St. Louis. Although I think everybody thinks here that was more precautionary, but we'll find out more on Friday. St. Louis, one in the last minute, Jimmy Snuggarood, They blew the 4-2 lead, one in the last 10 seconds. And then, of course, San Jose led 3-0 over Edmonton, had a fourth goal disallowed, lost in overtime, and Dallas led Vegas 4-1, going into the third, 4-2 with seven minutes left, and won it in overtime. Like this this was a night where your head was spinning.
Starting point is 00:08:17 There was a lot going on. It was a couple hours of great entertainment. Really, really good. So we were working the Seattle Toronto game, of course. It started late, 10 Eastern, 7 local time at Climate Pledge Arena. And we're sitting there and you're watching the out-of-town scoreboard from all the early games. And it was almost felt as if, as you're getting. gearing up to do the Toronto game, you're like, this looks like worst case scenario for them.
Starting point is 00:08:48 You know, like, oh, Detroit just tied it. They forced it in overtime. Montreal's up, Buffalo's up, Tampa's up. You know, Florida looked like they were going to get points out of the game against St. Louis before they pulled away again late. But then it just rolled into, for them, another game where they give up a goal early. Then in the second period, it's boom, boom, two against in 31 seconds. and though they didn't completely fold,
Starting point is 00:09:15 like we have seen, certainly at times over the five-game homestand, they just came off where they didn't win any. It was another game stacked on what's been just a disastrous couple weeks for the Maple Leafs. Like they started the night, 10 points out of a playoff spot. Like already the hole is deeper than when they left Toronto on Wednesday.
Starting point is 00:09:39 Yeah, they're 15th out of six. scene in the Eastern Conference and the Rangers are the only team below them. You know, the one thing I think is that I've been kind of hearing, there's been a lot of talk about Matthews and whether or not he wants to stay. I don't think that's a question.
Starting point is 00:09:58 You know, if people think this is off the rails for him, and I had a couple of people asked me about it because I wrote that in that Marner piece last week about how he told them a year before he could sign the extension that he's, He would sign as long as it didn't go off the rails, and he did. And people were like, well, what do you think now?
Starting point is 00:10:18 I still don't think that's the case. I think it would have to get a lot worse than this before he would ask to be traded. So I don't think that's going anywhere right now. We should also mention Montreal. The Canadians blew out the avalanche on Thursday night wearing the old Nordic uniforms. While those uniforms look great, I'd be really curious to know how hockey fans in Quebec felt about that. I think they look fantastic. I think the players look great in them, but I know for a certain group of people,
Starting point is 00:10:53 those are very painful to look at, particularly on the Colorado team. Some people were asking me, do you worry about the avalanche right now? They've gotten pounded a couple of times recently. The answer is no. every team goes through that during the year and I kind of wonder if McKinnon is just sort of like relaxing a bit and so is a couple of their other guys including McCars
Starting point is 00:11:18 they prepare for the Olympics. I don't worry about them. They'll be fine, especially when they get healthy. But it was, you know what's interesting about this is that first of all, they put Hudson and Dobson together and they scored what like 30 seconds in of the game and the other thing that's interesting here is the goalie coach now sometimes the goalie coach can be a scapegoat it wasn't going well for them this year's they made the change they brought in marco marciano i didn't know a lot about
Starting point is 00:11:54 him but someone did tell me i don't know if this has been out there i mentioned it on the radio the other day that there were other teams who were other teams who were wanted to hire him last summer, at least one, and he turned them down to stay in this organization. So I don't know if he saw that the opportunity might be there or if there was any particular reason that he said no elsewhere to stay with the Canadians. But this is a coach, Marciano, that was sought after by at least one other team at the NHL level and I heard they were disappointed not to get him. So I'm looking forward to seeing what he does and it's clear they're going to ride with Dobish for a bit here. I did want to mention
Starting point is 00:12:42 too, Dom was at Vancouver Anaheim, Nikita Tolapilo with the shutout, sort of. They beat the ducks two to nothing. He was pulled for a couple of minutes by the concussion spotter. So he doesn't get the individual shutout. It's a team shutout, but he was great and I wanted to shout him out too. You know, just back on Toronto for a sec before we get to the big one and that's Panarin, I think you'll see talks about Toronto's players intensify. I don't know if we'll see anything major before the Olympic freeze, which is on Wednesday, but I definitely think you're going to start to hear a lot more Toronto names get out there
Starting point is 00:13:33 more than you would have expected this year. I don't think we're too far away from that. I think they're going to put a lot of guys out there and just kind of see what the market is for them. Gotcha. Also just want to shout out. I mean, too bad to see Berkeley Caton leave the game early there. I mean, that was tough. Oliver Lachman-Larsons just doing his job.
Starting point is 00:13:58 and got caught reach in there and just a bad collision. I enjoyed talking to him in the morning before the game. Like, you didn't play the first five games of the year, right? And as a guy that could be sent back to junior, you're going, like, every day you're kind of waking up going, okay, is this the day I get the call saying, I'm going back to Spokane. They hang on to him, don't send him to World Juniors.
Starting point is 00:14:18 And he had been carving out a pretty good spot there for Seattle and living with Chandler Stevenson and just spoke the world of him. so Lane Lammer didn't have an update on him after the game, but hopefully it's nothing too too serious there. For a Seattle team that 17 games in January, they play Elliot, most of any team in the league and then managed to kind of at least keep their head above water here to this point and get back into one of the wild card spots with the win over Toronto on Thursday night. Okay, you said it.
Starting point is 00:14:50 Artemi Panarin, that is the big one, the big fish we're all kind of looking at here as we inch forward to if it's not the Olympic break, then trade deadline. Not playing right now for the Rangers, holding them out for roster management reasons. We all know where this is eventually headed, but when do we get there and how does it all look? Where do we sit? Okay, so I'm going to start from the beginning. As we all know now, the agent who's Paul Theophanes, is a lot of us. is driving a lot of this bus because it's been made pretty clear that he wants this to happen with an extension.
Starting point is 00:15:34 He doesn't want to go twice. He only wants to go once. And as a result, the agent with the player have a lot of say on how this can turn out, especially because he's got the no move clause. And I'll say this, I have heard a lot of conflicting information. and it was interesting. Like you call around and you call it some people who are pretty plugged in and they're like, that's the exact opposite of what I have heard.
Starting point is 00:16:04 Or they say that's not exactly what I've heard. Some of it is the same, but some of it is different. And by the end of the conversation, Kyle, I began to wonder if some teams were being told different things than other teams. just to try to see, you know, try to keep the information as quiet as possible or to throw people off sense as possible. Or people are just flat out lying to me, who knows. But there's a lot of conflicting information out there. So I'm going to try to distill it here the best I can. This is a big one, obviously, for Thea Fons, the agent.
Starting point is 00:16:45 you know, he's, he just did a huge one, Caprizov, the biggest deal in NHL history. And I think everybody understands that if you're going to get Panarin, he is going to try to hit a contract home run even though he's 34 years old. And the number I was hearing, and a few teams backed me on this, was 50 million. that that was what Panarin was hoping to get to and the teams could break it down as much as they did. Do you want to make it four times 12 and a half? Do you want to make it five times 10?
Starting point is 00:17:26 You know, what permutation do you want to get to? And that was, I think, the target. Now, obviously it doesn't mean that's going to happen. Maybe some teams, there'll be some situations he likes that simply say we can't go there and this is what we can do. But I think that was the target. I had a few people back me on that. And we'll see if he gets there or it ends up being a little bit less.
Starting point is 00:17:53 But, you know, Theophanus is a guy who likes to hit big homers. He did earlier this year. And it's one of the last big deals he's ever going to do. I think the only other guy he has to take care of outside of this is Bobrovsky, who, I mean, you know, we'll see what happens with him and fly. Florida. So there's that. I think the first thing to look at here is this is a player and this is an agent who want to hit a big home run and will be handsomely paid as we all know. He's going to get a big contract. I just don't know if he'll get to that number. I'm just going through some teams. Colorado interest, I believe, can't do it as an extension. The only way the Avalanche can do it is rental only. They have McKinnon there, and they just signed NACIS to over 10 million, and of course,
Starting point is 00:18:57 Kel McCar coming. So Colorado, I think, would be happy to take him as a rental. They cannot do it with an extension. Dallas, from what I understand with the stars, he's willing to go there too. however, as long as it is their goal to sign Jason Robertson, and right now I believe it is their goal to sign Jason Robertson, they can't do this. So if they were to have a philosophical shift, whether they decide, okay, we're going to move Jason Robertson, then I think they could talk about an extension, but they are not at that point at this time. It is still their goal to sign Robertson. The other thing I've heard about Dallas is they are concerned about their prospect pool and they don't want to trade a first round draft pick.
Starting point is 00:19:46 Now, that may change, but that is where we stand right now. So Dallas, I think, is unlikely. I never want to say anyone's out. You just never know what happens here. I've learned that things change, people change. So I'm saying Colorado, I don't think so. Dallas, I don't think so unless philosophy has changed. L.A. I've heard some interesting things about the Kings. I think there is interest in Panarin. So there were some rumors about the Kings and Evander King. And one of the things I heard is that the Kings were looking at where they are and they were saying, does it really make sense for us to give up some of our assets for short-term fixes? is it really makes sense for us to give up our future assets at all.
Starting point is 00:20:42 I believe internally that organization has been asking some hard questions about where they really are and what really is their smartest path. You know, Panarin, they do have scoring wingers. They have Fiala, they have Kampi, who they just extended, but they still have a lot of trouble scoring, and Panarin would help that. I think they have considered this. I think that the other thing that the Kings have worried about is how big an extension would look like.
Starting point is 00:21:15 But they're not out. I don't know really where to say it's going to go with them, except I think at times they've really wrestled with how much it truly makes sense for them. also if there are two California rivals Anaheim and San Jose they went to rock bottom and now they're coming out of it so how do the kings look at this they say maybe do we need a Panarin to be relevant
Starting point is 00:21:48 or do we just point to our fans and say okay these guys did it now it's our turn and I think the kings are going through all of that right now I hear mixed things about where they are and all this. But if you told me at the end of the day, they said, you know what? He's what we need.
Starting point is 00:22:11 He gives us more offense. We're going for it. I could see that. Seattle, who you saw tonight. Yeah. So Seattle has been looking for a score forever. And the whole Shane Wright thing,
Starting point is 00:22:28 I think that Seattle, goal is if they're going to trade him, they want him to get them someone who scores really can make a difference. Like they want to, if they're going to step up to the plate with this, it's not to bunt. It's to swing from the heels. So in theory, I could see them putting right out there for Panarin, right plus for Panarin. I just don't know that that's feasible. I just don't know how Panarin feels about them, if that's at all reasonable.
Starting point is 00:23:11 But I, so I would say it's unlikely, but I have no doubt Seattle called and said that's the kind of player we want. And that's the kind of deal we would do for Shane Wright. Well, it's interesting as soon as you mentioned that, first place my mind goes, I mean, who is Shane Wright's old minor hockey buddy? line mate, good friend, Brennan Othman. Oh, yes. He's part of the Ranger organization. Don Mills.
Starting point is 00:23:41 Uh-huh. Don Mills Flyers. Ripped it up there together for those years and before going on to Junior. I don't know how much that factors into things, but there's a connection. Washington, I've heard they're only doing this with an extension.
Starting point is 00:24:00 Rental does not interest them. I'll say this. Some other teams think the capitals have been aggressively pursuing this. So we'll see. I'm counting them as legit. Carolina, I always consider them a player in these kinds of things. I don't think they really knew where this was going to go. The one thing I wanted about for Carolina was one of the reasons Rantanin didn't work out there.
Starting point is 00:24:30 and there were several. And the major one was that it was just too much of a whirlwind for him. But stylistically, he didn't fit with the way they liked to play. You know, how do they feel about Panarin's game? Do they think it fits with the way they want to play? And at the end of the day, are they in Panarin a match for each other? I think they're in it. I don't know how to handicap their likelihood, though,
Starting point is 00:24:58 but they're always in it for players like this. Florida You know One thing about the Panthers Is that I think He really wants to go there The thing I'll say about Bill Zito is I think Bill Zito is the kind of guy
Starting point is 00:25:17 Who if he really wanted to do it I think Bill Zito was the kind of guy Who would move heaven and earth to do it But I don't see him Extending Panarin At what initially has been asked for. Like he's done some creative crazy extensions, like the one with Brad Marchand. I just don't know if I see him doing this. But, you know, he'd love to go there. And while I think it's extremely unlikely,
Starting point is 00:25:46 I don't count out the Panthers. San Jose, Kyle, I'm torn on this one too. I've, I think they're in it. I think he's interested. The biggest thing, though, what are you going to pay Celebrini? Right. And not just say, I'm like, there's a few young guys that it won't be at Celebrini's level, but it all eats a big one. Of course. Like, what are you paying him? First of all, the answer is whatever he wants.
Starting point is 00:26:24 Yes. That's the answer. I mean, is he not the first guy since McDavid where it could be walking in? going, hey, we're not asking for 20% and the sharks go, oh, thank goodness. Yeah, I mean, it could. Like, that to me is the interesting thing here. I've thought a lot about San Jose. First of all, because it was one of the first teams I mentioned it, just like, because I thought it would be really fun for them to see Celebrini with Panarin.
Starting point is 00:26:53 And, you know, they're kind of in a hot place right now. But, you know, they are going to have to have a few extended. here. But how, like, can you do celebrate? What's celebrini's number going to be and can you make it all work? That's one of the questions I have here. I'll just say I don't know what to make of this one. I really don't.
Starting point is 00:27:25 And this is another one I hear mixed things about how much desire they're really is on both sides. And some of it could be there's just smoke screens being put on there. You know, there were some reports that named some other teams that were much more likely than San Jose for Panarin. But it's sort of like I had a bunch of people saying to me, I wouldn't call them the front runner, but I wouldn't call them out. I don't know what to make of it yet.
Starting point is 00:28:03 Detroit, always tough with Iserman. I definitely think there's interest. Definitely. But you know Iserman, he generally doesn't like rentals. So can he make a deal there? Anaheim, I think Anaheim was willing to trade for Panarin, but not with the extension. And I think what they'd indicated was they were willing to trade for him. see how the fit went and then make that call.
Starting point is 00:28:32 And I heard that Panarin had indicated and Theophanes had indicated that's not what they wanted. They wanted the extension first. And Anaheim was not willing to do that. So right now it's a no. And Anaheim has a couple more big extensions to make with Leo Carlson and Goce. So that's a no. You know, Minnesota, again, I don't know. how you can pay Caprizov and Panarin, and let's just say you want to extend Quinn Hughes.
Starting point is 00:29:05 I'm just not sure the wild could do that. And then I've got a bunch of other teams here. Vegas, I always put them in, but I don't know how on earth they could do an extension. Utah. Now, you know me, Kyle. I think they're bigger game hunting than they're willing to admit. So I just put them there. Islanders.
Starting point is 00:29:30 And you know what? I put Philly in here too. Because I'll say this. If Caprizov had gotten to the open market, I think Philly was going to make a bid for him. And I could see Philly doing this too. Like, I've been watching them a lot lately because they're in a bit of a tough stretch.
Starting point is 00:29:52 And Kinecti showed a bit of his frustration after they got beat on Thursday night. And, you know, I look at Philly right now and they're falling back. And between now and the end of the season, if they're not battling for the playoffs, and I'm sure they're not waving the white flag yet, but the one thing I think they have to do over the Olympic break is talk about for the last six weeks of the season, how are we getting Mishkov going? how are we making sure that he finishes the season feeling good about himself because right now
Starting point is 00:30:34 that's not happening and I think that's your only priority well and I think that's your biggest priority outside of a miracle run to get to the postseason I think that's your biggest priority Mishkov finishing strong to me I wonder can Philly make this deal? And if not, are they hoping that somehow Panarin gets the open market? Seems unlikely. But I just, I put Philly in there because they would have gone after Caprizov and maybe they feel they need Panarin.
Starting point is 00:31:12 I know Kevin Weeks mentioned Toronto. I heard Toronto last week, but I checked into it and was told no. I mean, they may have looked into it, but I don't think it's likely for them. Am I missing anything here? Is there anything else you're, you listen to that long, onerous droning spiel and saying, you miss something. It sounds like you're rattling off the out of town scoreboard on Thursday. There's a lot of teams.
Starting point is 00:31:40 He just ripped through there. But my thing they're like, because I always say, Kyle, there's, there's something I'm not seeing. I know. I know. But as you're going through everybody. it feels like, as you said, Washington, they would insist on an extension. Philadelphia would be, like,
Starting point is 00:32:02 are those kind of the only two right now that you get a sense or comfortable with extension? Like, does that start to... Who do I have? Washington, like, Washington definitely extension. I think L.A. extension. Right, but there is still determining
Starting point is 00:32:22 if that's the path they even want to go down. I got to think if, you know, the more I think, if he, if Panera drops on their laps, I, I, I would be very curious to how L.A. would say, no, we're not doing this. But yes, L.A. extension, Carolina extension. San Jose extension. Detroit, to me, is absolutely extension. And, you know, it's going to take a couple days. Like, I asked a couple people on Thursday. We're doing the pod late Thursday night. Is it going to happen today? And people said to me, no, still a couple of days. Always change with one phone call.
Starting point is 00:33:10 I think it's a situation where the Rangers probably have to figure out where he wants. wants to go and he has to figure out where he wants to go. Like what's most important for him? Who can give him the biggest contract or where or a fit or a location? And I, you know, it sounds like this is one of those things that's going to take a couple of days. Like there was, you know, there was someone, there were a couple people actually who told me that they heard rumors that he'd already been offered extensions. And that was denied to me. but it just shows you that how complicated this is,
Starting point is 00:33:52 how much information conflicting information there is out there. And like I said, you know, some teams I was told by one person they're in. And then I had another person would say, no, no, that team's not in.
Starting point is 00:34:05 This team is in. So I think everybody's still kind of collecting their info. As we do this on Thursday night, I think everyone's collecting their information. And I think the number one question is, where does he want to? to go and what's he willing to accept? Like if he's not going to get the max package he wants, Kyle, what's he willing to take?
Starting point is 00:34:25 I think there's at least one team that asked if he would take the kind of deal that he wouldn't take in New York. And I think like a Kopitar-esque deal. And I think that's still a no. Yeah, because the tricky thing is, I mean, that's still, even if you did it over five years, that's still a pretty darn big number. And I don't know of how many, you know, with where he's at in his career,
Starting point is 00:34:56 and though he can still be very effective, don't get me wrong. But with where he's at his age and the teams that would kind of be looking at them, like, that's a very good complimentary piece, but like, is that kind of the role? Like if you're going into San Jose, for example,
Starting point is 00:35:14 you know, now you're a great, great complimentary piece, but at 10 million, like that's, you know, for example, there's a lot of money for someone in that role there. But I suppose some of the other names you throw out there, like we'll see what Washington looks like come next season. We all know this situation with Ovechkin. Carolina would be another one too. But yeah, that's still, if you try to spread it out over an extra year or two,
Starting point is 00:35:46 a big, big number, if that's what, that's what he's after. But the fact that at the early part of this week, that the Rangers are going, we're not dressing him here, like there's got to be belief that this gets done before the Olympic break, right? I mean, nothing's done until it's done.
Starting point is 00:36:00 I think so. Otherwise, that's a long, long time. Most people seem to think so, Kyle, that it will. But, you know, like we said, there's a couple of different things that has to happen here. One, Panarin has to decide
Starting point is 00:36:16 what's most important to him, the number, the location, the team, and then you have to make a deal. Like, remember when Giroux got traded to Florida, you know, he decided that's where he was going to go, and then Philly fought to try to get the best deal they possibly could. Like, initially the deal they got
Starting point is 00:36:42 was not the one that was presented to them. And, you know, know, with the, and there was pressure on them saying, he's not going anywhere else, he's not going anywhere else. And Philly said, look, he's not going anywhere at all unless we get a little bit better than this. And they did. And that happened to Calgary too with Rasmus Anderson and Vegas. You know, the deal that Vegas initially offered was not what they eventually got. And, you know, I think very clearly at the end, it was obvious it was going to be Vegas for Anderson when he said he wasn't willing to sign extension anywhere else, but Calgary said, look, we won't do it
Starting point is 00:37:23 unless we get more. And they got a bit more. So then it becomes, because there's no question that the team that is going to get Panarin is going to initially be like, well, you got to deal with us. So you're getting a roll of quarters and a non-functioning iPod case. and the range is going to be like, no, that's not the way that this is going to happen. Oh, man, roll of quarters and an iPod touch. You a wrestling fan at all? Yeah, like I've got great reverence for like what have been your era, but not as sharp with that. But yes.
Starting point is 00:38:11 There is a great video of Roddy Piper hitting Donnie. on Morocco with a roll of quarters and the lead up to it. If you like wrestling angles and you like Roddy Piper, go search it out on YouTube. It is hilarious. Oh, man. So how much of that man didn't do that wasn't good television? Yeah. He had a gift.
Starting point is 00:38:36 Fantastic. Fantastic gift. My grandparents, I think, knew his parents. They told me that once. They'd never before. Yeah. They met the before. It said very private people, very nice people.
Starting point is 00:38:48 Awesome. You know, the Rangers, too, the other one I wanted to mention. So I was on an NHL network this week, and I mentioned Schneider, and that, I had a couple people were like, seriously. And I think the Rangers like that guy. I've just heard that other people like that guy, too. And Drury's doing what he's doing, what he should do, is just listen to everyone, listen on everybody.
Starting point is 00:39:16 So he's collecting ideas. All right. So, man, lots going on in Manhattan right now. How about you mentioned Detroit earlier as part of the Panarin conversation. Yeah. They put themselves into a very good spot. Them and Winnipeg. You're hearing something could be percolating?
Starting point is 00:39:37 I don't know exactly what it is, but a couple people say to me they heard Detroit, Winnipeg. that there might be a match there. Is that a Luke Shen desire for the wings, perhaps? I don't know. I don't know. Like, honestly, I don't know. You know, part of me wondered if it, you know, could be like Logan Stanley, but I just, you know, they have Edvinson missing on that one side right now.
Starting point is 00:40:11 So, but, but he, I assume he's going to be back. but someone just said to me Detroit at Winnipeg there might be a match there there's a bunch of X jets there cop Yeah, Mason Appleton
Starting point is 00:40:28 that's right There you go I knew there was more than one I just couldn't remember them all at the top of my head But someone just said Detroit at Winnipeg
Starting point is 00:40:38 they thought there might be a match People just give me hints and see what I can do with them So you want I do with them I throw them out in a podcast. Throw them out with a roll of quarters. That's right.
Starting point is 00:40:54 Oh, geez. Columbus, you want to touch on them too? Yeah. Nice little run under Rick Bonas. A nice little run there, winning games. You know, so they got the one game postponed because of the snow, right? Yep. You know what's weird about that, Kyle?
Starting point is 00:41:12 That was the only one? Not only that. but the same night, Ohio State, their men's basketball team, played a game at home against Penn State. Yes. Someone told me this, and I went and I looked it up, and it was not a lie. It was the truth. On Monday the 26th, the night that Columbus and L.A. was postponed, Ohio State beat Penn State. So I was, I was like, that's weird.
Starting point is 00:41:49 Reminder of the, the hour that the NCAA has down there. Yeah, I guess the, you know, Buckeyes rule, right? It is an Ohio state, truly. So actually, and one of the things I heard, and I heard this from someone on another team, is that both the Kings and the Blue Jackets were annoyed. I mean, like, I think everybody understands, it's a serious situation.
Starting point is 00:42:14 nobody wants to make light of it. But I heard they were both annoyed because it took a game that was before the Olympic break and before the NHL trade deadline and moved it to after the trade deadline. So the make-up date is March 9th. And that's after the NHL trade deadline. So the Kings and the Blue Jackets lose a game that could help them decide. where they are before the Olympic break and or the trade deadline. And it's a bit of a pain in the butt for both those teams.
Starting point is 00:42:56 Anyway, I think that I have a feeling they're going to try to sign Mason Marchmont, who they just acquired has been very good for them. But I also think they're going to take a run at Jenner and Coyle and see what they could do there. And depending on what Columbus decides, both where they are in the standings and where they are with resigning these players, they're going to have some interesting calls to make here.
Starting point is 00:43:37 Yes, yes, they will. By the way, Zach Renske only continues to look fantastic on their back end. He's really, I know you love saying, and Hayskin and maybe the best defenseman out there that has one on Norris, Zach Werensky's doing a really good job of inserting himself into that conversation with an exclamation point. Man, it's been a treat. And good to see that they were able to get Charlie Coil's thousandth game ceremony.
Starting point is 00:44:06 It was supposed to be the game that was postponed, the pregame ceremony, all the family in town, and it looked like it was still a good turnout for the game at home on, Wednesday that was played to celebrate a thousand games for him. You know, someone had a good line to me. They're like, how does the Coil family all get along? Are they sitting there and saying, oh, great, we've got three extra days with each other. Are they saying, oh, my God, we've got three extra days with each other?
Starting point is 00:44:39 I remember when the Bruins went to the file in 2019, he told a great story of Z. grandmother and aunt it was his grandmother and one other relative because of course waymuth boy right so family on his side of her from Massachusetts and big brunes fans he ends up there it's a great story and they'd be watching the playoff games whenever Boston scored they grandma the other family they would call each other and the one would pick up and they'd just say woo and the other one would go woo and they'd hang up and that was it and they go back to watching the game and they score it again they'd call each other again do the same thing so i think they may have managed to survive an extra couple days is what i'm getting at they're doing little rituals i'm sure i'm sure they did okay
Starting point is 00:45:27 yeah how about the week for the islanders elliott so you go back to last weekend tough loss to buffalo patrick waugh sitting the barsal line um boy was he ever frank in the post game comments and then Matthew Darsh goes out and swings a couple of deals for Andre Pallat for Carson Sousy on the back end. We know that at least the bottom half of their blue line's kind of been they've been trying to find the right fit there, especially with Romanov out injured. But income those two players and back-to-back wins against the Rangers of all teams. And as Matthew Schaefer said, post-game, our fans are louder than theirs. You know what I, first of all, everybody loves Schaefer. Everybody loves him.
Starting point is 00:46:16 fantastic and he's been great for hockey and he's been great for the islanders. So I have a friend who's a Rangers fan and he saw that on Thursday night and you know what he texted me? He says, I cannot wait for payback. I said, how can you hate this guy? He goes, I don't hate him. I love him, but I can't wait until we start killing him. That's fandom, right?
Starting point is 00:46:43 Especially in that part of the world. That's how it should be. Oh, you know, they go. The other thing, too, and this should be mentioned, Susie thanked the Rangers for dealing him close to home because they just had a kid. Yep. It's pretty clear that Drury and the Rangers have learned their lesson from what happened a couple years ago.
Starting point is 00:47:02 And they're like, okay, like Crider left them this time under better circumstances. It kind of started turning around with the way they handled Crider. And now Susie, they do him a real solid. You know, the Pilate trade, he had to wave to go to New York, which is a good sign for them. Very interesting week for New York. They bench the one line, Duclair, Barsel, and Lee. And you saw how mad Patrick Waugh was the game he did it. It was very Barube-like how mad Baroube's been lately.
Starting point is 00:47:36 But he did it. And then I like the fact that Darsh went out and did it there, his act. because, you know, immediately this, you kind of switch the story from, okay, Wab bench these guys. How is this going to affect us to, oh, we just got Susie and we just got Palat. And, you know, people were talking about the devils and the Islanders and the fact that Pilat didn't have salary retained. If you really want to look at it, the retention was Cyplikov because they need
Starting point is 00:48:16 to move a forward to make that deal the Islanders did. Sipulikov gets a fresh start, which he really needs. But also, that takes Pallat's money from six to three and a quarter. So that's what you look at as the salary retention. It's not his. It's trading Sipikov. And, you know, I understand when New Jersey did it. They were trying to move Hamilton to open up space.
Starting point is 00:48:44 You lose Hughes. you can't trade Hamilton while Hughes is out unless you either wave the white flag or you get a great offer. And they're not waving the white flag. So they can't move Hamilton and Hamilton have been playing well. So now they decide, okay, we're doing Pilat. And I'll say this. I don't think for a long time they wanted to move Pilat. They considered them very important to their group and they said, we'd like to keep them around.
Starting point is 00:49:13 but, you know, eventually gets to a point where you have to do it. I also think the Islanders took a look at bunting. You know, bunting is a UFA in Nashville. And I think they were looking at him. Obviously, they couldn't reach a deal, and so they went for Pallat instead. But I do think they looked into Bunting. And, you know, last pod we mentioned Purbix.
Starting point is 00:49:41 like obviously everyone's curious about the big Nashville guys the other guy for the predators I think is going to be a name out there is going to be McCarran I think he's like fourth line center does the things you need to do in the postseason I think he's going to be a guy out there as well and I did want to mention some Calgary stuff I talked about on one of my interviews I can't remember which one about Cadre and Dallas. And I was reminded of what I'd said about Panarin.
Starting point is 00:50:18 I don't think Dallas can do anyone with term until they've decided that for whatever reason, Robertson's not staying. As long as Robertson's staying, they have no room for anybody with term. And I still do think it's their plan to sign Robertson to an extension. So keep that in mind. I wanted to do some shoutouts, by the way. Okay. If I could.
Starting point is 00:50:44 So on my flight down to Tampa this week, I met Logan Stanley's parents. Oh, nice. Yeah, very nice people. Very nice people. They sat in front of me on the flight down there. They were going to see their son play. Jeff and Lori Stanley. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:51:09 I talked to Jeff last before. Really nice, man. Did you? Oh, okay. A few years ago. And I want to say, Logan, good on you. You put your parents in business. That's the way it goes.
Starting point is 00:51:21 They did a great job raising you, Logan. You take care of them and you put them in the good seats. Very, very impressed. Now, on the flight two, I had a chance to meet the pilot. And he is a big fan of. of the pod, Kyle, from Fall River Nova Scotia. His name is Captain David Anstey. And, you know, our flight was a bit delayed, going to Tampa on Tuesday morning.
Starting point is 00:51:59 And believe me, I was not complaining about that. At this time of year, as long as you get off the ground, that's a victory. Delay is no problem. and he apologized for the messy delay, but Captain, don't worry about it. Outstanding flight. And he came over to say hello, made a point of saying hello and dropping off a card.
Starting point is 00:52:22 So I wanted to shout him out. Wow. I also, the lady I flew back with was a lady named Cindy, whose son, Jeff McDougal, was a former football player at Acadia in St. Mary's, waxing poetic about all her kids, not just you, Jeff, but a big lightning fan.
Starting point is 00:52:44 They have a place in Tampa, and she's a huge lightning fan. And I also wanted to shout out a young man I met named Dylan Sutherland, who's a big fan of the pod, and also works for the Yankees on their grounds crew in Tampa at Legends Field in Tampa,
Starting point is 00:53:02 and also works on the new pitch tracking system. that's coming into Major League Baseball. So a bunch of people I met this week, I just wanted to shout out. Jeez. A bunch of VIPs among you the nobody, eh? Like, that's pretty neat. That's right.
Starting point is 00:53:20 That's really great. All of them much more important than I am. Yeah. Nice touch. So that's great that they were kind to you. I know that's not always the case when you're out in public. Well, it doesn't happen here.
Starting point is 00:53:33 So it's nice it happens out there. Yeah. Yeah, that's the real. reason you wanted to go down there. Forget the weather. I just wanted some peace and harmony for a few days. I get it. Okay, and I might as well throw a shout out in here to Fridge. I wanted to shout out a friend of the podcast, Alex Lyon, for becoming the franchise record holder for the longest winning streak in Buffalo Sabres franchise. Did you see the photo of him and Dominic Hachick after the game? Yes, I did. Like, that was the best thing about it was that Hachick was there to see it. So the sabers put it out there, the first comment below, best goalie of all time. Also, Dom Haschick is in this photo. I'm telling you, Lion, you know what I call him, the Savior.
Starting point is 00:54:23 He is the Savior. The fixer. Every year he saves somebody. That's something else now in Buffalo. Yeah. Incredible. The Savior, Alex Lyon. So why don't we get to that then as the final thing?
Starting point is 00:54:36 Thoughts. So we spent some time down in Tampa, Elliott. Time with John Cooper, around the lightning. By the way, not only is it the stadium series this Sunday, Lightning Bruins, it's also the in-season Cup showdown, Lightning Bruins. Oh, yes. Emily's passed me. You've passed me. This sucks. Well, here's your chance to get back going. I don't know. I don't know if I see the Lightning losing.
Starting point is 00:55:06 this one at home at Raymond James Stadium. So I went by the stadium. I was able to go in on Wednesday afternoon. And first of all, like a lot of it's covered right now. There's a tent over the ice to protect the ice. And Derek King, who's the ice guru for the National Hockey League, was explaining to me, basically it was a military company. And the guys who created were from Winnipeg, I think. They created the tent that they put over top of the ice. It's really interesting story, like just the engineering and the construction they do. And they're taking that tent down at 6.30 a.m. Sunday morning, basically 12 hours before the game. So the rink is under a tent to protect it. And if you haven't seen it yet, there's some renderings of it. I saw some of the design of the pirate map
Starting point is 00:56:05 that the overall football field is being turned into. It looks fantastic. It really does. And, you know, I'm, obviously, I'm a Viking fan. You're a Packer fan. But Kyle, you know, you go into the Raymond James Stadium and, you know, the sales of the pirate ship where the Buccaneers play, that big one that's in the end zone or above the end zone, they now have the sales, have the banners for the stadium series. They were rolled up when I was there, but it looks really cool. Now, I'm of a certain age.
Starting point is 00:56:40 I can walk. I can look up. I see, like, I mean, there's some great Buccaneers players whose names are on their ring of honor. There's Derek Brooks. There's Warwick Dunn. There's Warren Sapp. Like, all the great players from that era. But I remember the ones like Doug Williams before he won a Super Bowl with Washington.
Starting point is 00:57:03 He was the first quarterback. to win a playoff game for the Buccaneers in the creamsicle uniforms. And also, they had Jimmy Giles, who was a great tight end, and Leroy Selman, who was a fantastic defensive end, number 63. So I thought that was really cool to go see. But I went and I saw the lightning practice, and, you know, Victor Hedman was still in the non-contact jersey, the day I saw him practice.
Starting point is 00:57:34 Ryan McDonough, that was the day before he returned to play. He returned to play as they beat the Jets on Thursday night. But it was funny. I was joking with Hedman about how he's going to be the eighth defenseman when he comes back. And he kind of laughed at that about all the kids who've been playing really well since he's been out. And, you know, he got a good laugh out of that. And it's, I think one of the things that everybody there is kind of wondering is how, were they going to redeploy everybody when he's healthy and who's going to play with him?
Starting point is 00:58:10 Because some of these pairs have been really good, but I talked to Vasilewski about it. And you know what? He was so simple. He said, I said, why is it all worked? And he says, the reason it works is that everybody has a role. Everybody understands their role and everybody does their job. Like he's basically saying that these young guys, they come up, they're told, you need to do this to fit in and make it work and they all do it. And, uh, you know, I, I was, I was pretty
Starting point is 00:58:40 impressed by that. Like, some of these guys that are playing there, they were blocked and they weren't, um, you know, they weren't playing very much at the NHL level. And, you know, they'd be asking the organization, when do we get a chance? Like, what do we have to do to get a chance? And the lightning we're telling them, you're not doing anything wrong. You're not doing anything wrong, you're simply blocked right now. And someday your opportunity is going to come and you have to be ready to grab it. And for a bunch of guys, that's happened this year. And you know, Kyle, I went and I introduced myself to a couple of the guys I'd never met before. Like, I'm getting really old right now. I'm 30 years older than a lot of these guys. And a lot of their faces, I don't know as well. So, you know, I
Starting point is 00:59:32 introduced myself to Curtis Douglas. I introduced myself to Dominic James and, you know, I couldn't see, I wanted to meet like Dashto and Carlisle and Crozier. I think Carlisle was one of the guys that kind of
Starting point is 00:59:51 felt a little bit stuck and now he's got the opportunity and Sean Dersey will never forget him. That's for sure. But I really liked what Vasilevsky said about you know what you get your chance you understand your role you do your job and it works and oftentimes it's it's that simple i mean radish is the really interesting story there um and you know
Starting point is 01:00:17 we've talked about it a little bit um you know does he stay on the power play when headman comes back i assume he does um you know the one thing that they can do is they can probably moderate headman's minutes for the rest of the regular season because of how well this is gone and save him for the save his really heavy stuff for the playoffs if you really need that um you know i think radish they're going to let this one play out and it's pretty obvious that you know they're going to say to him they're going to say to him look we have a number and we can't go past that number and you know you can't fault radish for going out there and saying this is my best chance to hit my biggest And if that happens, he might have to move on, but I think they're just going to enjoy the ride between now and then.
Starting point is 01:01:08 But what a team they are right now. And I'll say this too. I saw Vasilewski practicing in his outdoor game pads. They look pretty spectacular. Oh, yeah. With the lighter blue. Yeah, they look fantastic on him, really good. Yeah, it's an incredible sign of.
Starting point is 01:01:30 And they've had a history of doing this, but now it's really coming into light because of the injuries and the fact that they're just the guys that had been around for a long time. A lot of them aren't there anymore. But that synergy between your NHL club and your farm club, the fact they're able to bring guys up in situations like this. And to Vaselowski's point, nothing really changes. It's just different names on the back of the jerseys, but everyone continues to play the same way and they all feel like they've got a piece of it. How was John Cooper? He's what, just over a week before getting on a plane and heading over to Milan, team leading the division. So we sat down for an interview with him. We sat down for an interview with him, Kyle, and it's going to air next week at some point on both TV and the podcast.
Starting point is 01:02:19 And he was fantastic. First of all, his family, they were a great host to us. As you know, when you bring a camera crew into someone's house, lots of stuff gets thrown around, kind of. And they were extremely gracious hosts and really nice people. And I'll tell you this too, he had some really interesting stuff in his office. You know, you'll see some of it when we do the piece. But he had a bunch of old hockey cards on a cup on his desk. and it was like from the 70s.
Starting point is 01:03:01 I thought that was really neat. He's a bit of a collector, eh? Like there's some neat things he's on. Well, there was some great stuff and is like behind, behind his head, you'll see there'll be an old Notre Dame hockey jersey. And that's Notre Dame Hound's, not Notre Dame fighting Irish. And there is a, there's a couple of sayings he has. He has a picture of Gretzky with the Stanley Cup right near his desk. He's got his two Stanley Cup rings.
Starting point is 01:03:26 on his desk. He's got a lot of very interesting things. But the one thing I saw that really stood out to me, Kyle, is that the two Stanley Cups that they won, he's got framed. There's a selfie from each of him and the coaching staff from all 16 wins both years. So. Oh, like, so after each game? After each game. Oh, wow. Cool. And so like, for example, 2020, their first win of the playoffs, selfie. And then for each game they won, there's a selfie. It's all the coaches, including, you know, the video staff like Nigel Kerwan, he's in there too. And our buddy, Newsy Lalonde, is in those photos.
Starting point is 01:04:13 And then 2021, when they won again, they have same thing, all selfies after every game. So in addition to the picture of them with the cup and everything, there's a selfie from each win. And he mentioned to me that in 2022, they were doing the same thing. Unfortunately, they fell to win short against Colorado. But it's, it's, we actually didn't shoot that. Um, but I saw it and I, I said to him, I thought that was the, I love the hockey cards. I asked him to show me some hockey cards that he had there. Uh, but that was the thing that really stood out to me. I thought that was super cool. That's all. Awesome. Did you go to the spot outside? I think it was at his house. Remember the great shot of him with the cigar and Lord Stanley next to him after they won for the second time? And he was like, yeah, I think, I think this is a new house. Oh, okay. Different digs now. Yeah. All right. We'll forget that. But he was, you know, I'll say this. Like he was a great interview. We went down there and like I said, him and his family, they were great hosts. And he was an excellent interview. He had.
Starting point is 01:05:26 some fantastic quotes and comments. He is never not worth listening to. Looking forward to that next week for each. Good job, my man. All right, that'll do it for the final thought. Why don't we take our first break? And when we come back, the latest edition of the Thought Line, 32 Thoughts, the podcast will continue after this.
Starting point is 01:05:49 All right, welcome back. Time once again for the latest edition of the Thought Line. Elliot, I'm going to hazard a guess you are ready to be shot out like a rocket to begin this segment? Rocket raccoon. Very good. Guardian of the Galaxy. Excellent franchise. Young Bukascus. Yes. You would not be surprised to hear that there was a lot of raccoon commentary this week. And do you know what post I got the most about 15 times? Which one? The one, I'll just read it, from We're All Primos. That's the Instagram.
Starting point is 01:06:37 account. There's a taco restaurant in Puerto Vallardo, Mexico, where raccoons roam the tables, steal food, and sit with customers while they eat. What? Yeah. I got sent this post about 15 times with people saying things like, you got to visit. You got to go check this place out. Oh, my gosh. I just actually, yes, I see someone DM the two of us here. with that post. Yes.
Starting point is 01:07:10 Ross Willen, thank you for the heads up. This is incredible. Yeah. It's happening. There were a few people who wrote in about the grooming story, saying that they either had the laugh of the week or they couldn't believe it was true. Nobody pointed out what you pointed out, Dom,
Starting point is 01:07:31 which is that the photo was likely AI, but it doesn't mean the story's untrue. It just means the artwork was, a fabrication. People love that story. They couldn't believe it. They were laughing their heads off. There were a couple of other raccoon related notes. Someone sent me a picture of our 32 Thoughts artwork with your head and my head switched to raccoon heads. There was another guy named Dennis Wayne, who sent in a photo Florida driver spots two raccoons sitting on a drive-thru counter. W.M.M.I. Sports in Kentucky. I think it's Kentucky. It must be Kentucky. No, Southern Illinois. Excuse me. But they sent in a raccoon story about a raccoon visiting the Kentucky legislature.
Starting point is 01:08:39 Oh, gosh. Must be Kentucky. Sorry, Southern Illinois. Well, it was in Kentucky. Southern Illinois, Kentucky, they're practically the same. Close enough. Yeah, yeah, that's great.
Starting point is 01:08:51 And then there was one person, Ryan, I think he's an Islander's fan. He looked at my tweet about the Islander trade for Pilate, and I wrote, I didn't even notice I did this. Isles get a third and a sixth, and I spelled out third and I numbered the sixth.
Starting point is 01:09:12 And he wrote, Love the word, then the number. Really well done here. Ryan. I had no idea. I even did that until you mentioned it. It was pretty funny. That's great.
Starting point is 01:09:25 And what you haven't even highlighted getting some love from the Rocket City Trash Pandas, in particular, Sprocket. Oh, yes. The mascot. I forgot about that. They said you some love. Yes.
Starting point is 01:09:37 and you're going to their barbecue weekend. Well, I mean, depending on... I shudder to think of what they're barbecuing. Only one way to find out for each. That reminds me, actually. There were a bunch of people, I forgot to write it down until I just said this, there were a bunch of people who sent me video of a woman, and I don't know if this is real or not,
Starting point is 01:10:00 but she claims to barbecue raccoons into like a dinner meal. Ugh. No, I... Maybe that's what you're doing next summer when you hang out with the trash pandas. I think the three of us are going to have to go down if the cup final is wrapped in time. June 19th and 20th is the Rocket City Trash Pandas barbecue weekend. Like I say, I don't want to know what they're barbecuing. Okay, something I wanted to shout out.
Starting point is 01:10:31 Thank you to Jordan Crane. Remember we were having the conversation of Dan Hineau with the bench interference penalty. reaching up to grab for the puck. He reminded me that in October 2021, Matthew Kuchuk, while still a member of the Calgary Flames, he was one that got caught with the puck was going over the glass behind the bench, and he reached up with his stick and knocked the puck down from the bench and got a penalty for it. I had forgot that he had been busted with it a number of years ago.
Starting point is 01:11:03 So thank you, Jordan, for highlighting that one. And also wanted to congratulate our time. teammate does work on the Flames regional broadcast. Jason York, part of this year's class of the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame. So way to go, Jason. Well deserved. One of the Nippian's finest. Thank you very much, Jason. We appreciate it. All right. Here we go. Aaron in Seattle is where I am today. Did he hand you this question personally? Yes, hand delivered. It was waiting in my hotel room when I checked in. An embroidered letter.
Starting point is 01:11:43 Yeah. In ink. Aaron in Seattle. Hey, 32 thoughts, dudes. Did you see what happened in the second period of the Tuesday night game in Seattle against the capitals? Jared McCann had a hat trick taken away after a very long official's review on the ice regarding a high stick penalty by Benares. Penalty had occurred about a minute or so before the goal in the Cracken's defensive zone and possession changed at least once afterward. Not only was the goal eventually nullified, but the clock was never reset to when the penalty occurred.
Starting point is 01:12:15 A four-minute double minor was called, and Ovechkin, sure as the sun rising in the east, scored a power play goal. We still ended up winning 5-1. McCann had a four-point night, but had to joke with the crowd afterward about how he was sorry. Everyone tossed perfectly good hats onto the ice, even though the hat trick ended up not counting. The broadcast team was totally flummoxed, and at least during the game, no clarifying note from the league was sent to explain the call. So what happened? So what's interesting, Alia, is it is actually written in the rule specifically pertaining to a double minor high sticking penalty that is missed by the referee.
Starting point is 01:12:51 It's under 32.4 reporting to the referee. And it says when it is apparent that an injury has resulted from a high stick that has gone undetected by the referees and requires, the assessment of a double minor penalty. Now, it also says in the rule book in that case that the linesperson is supposed to stop play immediately, not wait until the next stoppage, but I was going through. So Dave Jackson weighed in on this. Of course, you can imagine how many Cracken fans were reaching out to him saying, can you explain what the heck is going on here and why was the goal taken off the board
Starting point is 01:13:27 when the call was missed and it was so far before the goal was actually scored. So I guess because I guess the linesperson couldn't determine right. away that there was in fact an injury that there was blood drawn on the high sticking infraction that was missed by Baneers. That's why the whistle wasn't blown initially and almost a minute later McCann scores what he thinks is his hatrick goal and it ends up coming off the board. And the other thing too, he was asking about, you know, the clock wasn't reset. In that case when it comes to a mispenalty that it's later gone back and confirmed that there is one to be called, you don't add the clock back on in that case.
Starting point is 01:14:06 as you would be for a miss stoppage on a goal, an offside that is challenged. You reset the clock there, but not in this case. So I do believe in the end here by the NHL rulebook, the right thing happened. It was just a bizarre sequence that we never see. And of course,
Starting point is 01:14:27 highlighted by the fact that there were hats throwing it on the ice all for not by the end of it. Good job. Nice work. Okay. Steve from Detroit. Hello, Kyle, Dom Griffin, and the raccoon wrangler, Elliot. If I was, if I really was the raccoon wrangler, there would be none in my backyard. I'm a terrible raccoon.
Starting point is 01:14:49 You are the opposite. I am the raccoon unrangler. Yes, the welcomer at this point. I'm Steve, a wings and lightning fan from Metro Detroit, not Detroit. Kind of conflicting, right? Well, I'm named after Steve Eiserman. I became a lightning fan in the heyday of Stephen Stamcoast and Marty Seelieu, but the wings have always had a place in my fandom. My question is about the last change rule.
Starting point is 01:15:15 Can you explain what exactly that means at how it impacts a game? I understand it allows the home team to get their ideal lines on the ice to match up against their opponent. But does that mean a coach can throw their five best guys out there at any time? Can they delay the clock to get the change they want? Thanks for all you guys do in your work, especially the raccoon. Typhoon known as Friege. That's a better raccoon typhoon. That is good alliteration, Steve.
Starting point is 01:15:41 I'm a big fan of alliteration. I like that. A couple things here. Basically, you have it there. And that is that the home team gets the chance to make the last change, which gives them the opportunity to get the matchup they want on the ice.
Starting point is 01:16:02 Now, one difference, obviously, would be icing if you ice the puck and you can't change, then you lose. That's the one of the few situations, if any other situations, that you would have in a game where you wouldn't have the last change. So basically, it's supposed to be an orderly quick thing. The referees, you'll see them. If there's a play blown dead and the players start changing, the referees will give the visiting team some time, a few seconds, and then they'll be.
Starting point is 01:16:35 will lift their hand in sort of like a stop. At that moment, the visiting team is not allowed to make a change. And that's when the home team gets their few seconds of advantage to put their players out there. Am I missing anything here, Kyle? No, no. I think, I think you've nailed it. Like they can't, you ask you that can you delay the clock? You can't.
Starting point is 01:16:57 Like, to your point, once the arm goes up, like, it's about a five second window, give or take that the home team, home team head coach has a chance to. to make a change. And if in that time, they don't do anything, he can't make up his mind and then the arm comes down, like then too bad. You've missed your window. So that's the time.
Starting point is 01:17:16 Too bad. So sad. Better luck next year. Okay. Brandon from Nebraska. Hello, Dom and Kyle. Hail Elliot, king of the raccoons. This is just. It's unbelievable how much of a time.
Starting point is 01:17:29 You know, I try to guard my turf and it's out of control. I know. And I don't want to editorial. the intros that our listeners are kind enough to put in. So you keep coming with the raccoon intros for Fridge. They will continue to be read. With the news this week of Montreal relieving Eric Raymond of his duties as goalie coach,
Starting point is 01:17:48 I was wondering what precedence there was for players with active league contracts on LTIR taking a position coaching, specifically, Kerry Price, being able to take the now open position of goalie coach. Now, I should point out here quickly, Elliot that they did promote Marco Marciano to take the role in Montreal. So technically it's not open with the Canadians. But anyway, Brandon goes on to say, would the player or hiring team have to negotiate a release slash buyout of the contract?
Starting point is 01:18:20 Does the NHLPA have a standing agreement to not permit this to happen? Would this be something the PA would be against due to the way LTIR operates? Thanks for the great listen. My wife and I both enjoy the podcast. Thank you, Brandon. Thank you, Brandon, and thank you also to your wife. It's a great question. And I think if the Canadians really wanted to hire Carey Price and Carrey Price wanted to take the job,
Starting point is 01:18:47 I think there would be a compromise that could be worked out. If Carey Price was still an active player, I don't believe this would be allowed to happen. You know, Chris Pronger, you'll remember, he worked for NHL player safety when he was still being paid technically by the Phoenix Coyotes. Right. So there is a history of as long as we know the player is not playing. Like I think if Kerry Price was still trying to play, no chance this would be allowed to occur. But since he's done and he'll never play again, I believe if everybody wanted to happen, it to happen, they would find a way to make it happen.
Starting point is 01:19:33 Of course, his salary would still have to say on the cap. I don't think there would be any chance that they would allow that to be removed. They just say, look, you're not playing. You can be hired to be a coach, but your salary, it stays on the cap. All right, very good. Let's go to a voice bill next. Mole from Hamilton. I was listening to your recent podcast, and Elliot was talking about how Mike Batcock and Adam
Starting point is 01:20:00 Oates were fanatical about handedness. It got me thinking, we have switch hitters in baseball who can bat either right or left-handed. There have been switch pitchers in baseball who have thrown either right or left-handed. Has there ever been a truly ambidextrous player in the NHL, somebody who is proficient with either a right-handed or left-handed stick to be a skater or even a goalie? Thanks, gentlemen. Okay, great question. Great question.
Starting point is 01:20:38 And Mo, I don't know how old you are. You sound like a fairly young man. But I can tell you that there was a player, and it was before my time, but I saw him play in an old-timer game. he's in the Hockey Hall of Fame. His name is Norm Allman. Okay.
Starting point is 01:21:10 So Norm Allman was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982. He was one of the players who was traded from Detroit to Toronto in the Frank Mahavlidge deal in 1968. And so, and Paul Henderson was traded in that deal, too. the 1972 Summit Series hero, he was traded with Allman from Detroit to Toronto. Alman was a player who had a great career combined in the NHL and the WHA. He had more than 1,300 points. And like I said, he's in the Hall of Fame.
Starting point is 01:21:45 I saw him in an old timers game when I was a kid and he took the opening face off and he brought out a stick that had a shaft and on the top end it had a blade to shoot left, and on the bottom it had a blade to shoot right, or on each end. And what he did is part of the stick is he went out there to take the opening face off, and while he was waiting for the puck to drop,
Starting point is 01:22:15 he said to the official, hang on a sec, and he turned his stick over to take the draw the other way. Oh, that's great. And that's when we all realized in the crowd what was going on with his stick. And I saw an interview with him once where he talked about, I saw it or I read it,
Starting point is 01:22:34 where he talked about how he could play either way, that he could do it. I don't know if he ever did as a player, but he had that stick and he talked about how he could do it. The other guy who people talked about who could do it, apparently was was gorty howl and that there are stories written about him apparently that he was when he was a boy in public school the only when he played goal the only catching glove was on his opposite hand so he had to hold the stick the other way and apparently that there
Starting point is 01:23:27 was a claim that he did score a few, not a lot, but a few of his goals from the left side. So that's, those are the two that stand out to me. If there's anyone more recent, I'm not sure who it would be. Right. I mean, Bill Dernan, the goalie, like if you look up photos of him. Oh, of course, yeah, yeah. I was thinking of a skater. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:23:57 That's right. Yep. You can see photos of the catching glove on both hands at certain points over his career. I don't know this isn't an ampidextor string, but remember, Dan Blackburn, this was because of injury. Remember, he was like it was almost the two blockers? Or two blockers. He couldn't use, he couldn't use two gloves. That's right.
Starting point is 01:24:15 Yeah. Now, that wasn't switching hands, but just a bit of a unique look from a goaltender perspective. And I think now even, like sometimes I think, especially how skilled these guys are, the instincts, sometimes sink in and you end up in without even thinking you're doing something the opposite hand just for a brief moment like i've heard like philip forsberg would be a guy on nashville or if you really watch sometimes when these things are in tight you just flip the stick over and keep going i mean boy macklin celebrating looked ambidextrous the way he's using the the top end of his stick to win the face off the other night when the face off the other day that's right incredible don what
Starting point is 01:24:51 are you saying callie yarn croak here just looking through uh researching for you guys and callie yon croak seems to come up quite a bit. Really? Yeah. Former Seattle Cracken expansion pick. But great question, Mo. Thank you for sending that one in. Okay, we got one more here, Fridge.
Starting point is 01:25:10 Mike from Buffalo. Elliot, Dom, and for once, the other guy. It means me. Trading places. Trying a thought line submission once again. Way to be resilient. There has been a barrage of defense. hat tricks lately with three and four nights.
Starting point is 01:25:31 Evan Bouchard had won Saturday versus the Capitals, Matthias Ekholm, Monday versus the Ducks, and Rasmus Dahlin Tuesday against those Maple Leafs. I could go any number of ways with this question, but I settled on too. What is the record for defenseman hat tricks in a season? Secondly, I could just look this one up, but I like to hear Elliot guess.
Starting point is 01:25:52 Who has the career record for most hatrics from a defenseman in NHL history? Keep up the great work. you gents help brighten my day twice a week during the long gray winters. Well, I wish those winters weren't so long and gray, and that's why I'm already sick of this one. There's been too many. I mean, the most hat tricks by defensemen, I know that's Bobby Orr. Yes. I don't know who would have it in a season.
Starting point is 01:26:23 I would guess it's got to be Orr or Paul Coffey. So we're doing, if I understand. stood his question right because he was looking at different defensemen that have one recently, like most hat tricks league-wide in one season by a defenseman. So that's what I've got here. So what do you got? Well, the record is nine in 74-75. And that would be yours time.
Starting point is 01:26:51 Correct. And this season is tied for second already. there's been five defensemen with Hattricks around the league. And that is tied for second most behind nine and 74, 75. So you're right about most career, Bobby O'R. with nine. Second is Harry Cameron with six. And what's impressive about him is that he didn't play a ton of games in the league. NHL, that is.
Starting point is 01:27:22 127. I wouldn't have gotten Harry Cameron, I'll tell you that. Listed as a defenseman, 127 games, he had 90 goals. He made his debut with the arenas and the birth of the NHL in 1917, 18, so very different time. But man, 90 goals and 127 games. I would have thought he would have got more games with those numbers. Anyway. Someone's going to be writing and saying, I can't believe you guys didn't guess Harry Cameron.
Starting point is 01:27:53 How dumb are you two idiots? Yes. Yeah. So he had six in his career, Paul Coffey, Denny Podfan, both with five, rounding up the top four in NHL history. Okay. So I was just fiddling around. And that last question about the ambidextrous players, I was just doing some Google searches. And you know what came up? I would love to say I remembered this off the top of my head. But I'd be lying. And I do not lie, like lying to the listeners. Do you remember, Kyle, when Bobby Ryan scored with Miko Kovu's stick? Absolutely. Yeah. Bobby Ryan is a righty. Miko Kovu is a lefty.
Starting point is 01:28:40 So Bobby Ryan proved he could shoot with a left-handed stick. Yes. That was the great celebration showing Kovu his own stick afterwards when he scored with it. Because Kovu ripped Ryan's out of his hand, so he picked up Koiw's. Boy who's sick. And using the backside of the blade on his forehand, score is a great, great call on that one. Very good.
Starting point is 01:29:04 I googled it. Still, good call. All right, that'll do it for this edition of the thought line. 32 thoughts at sportset.com.ca is the email if you'd like to submit a question or a thought or an idea that way.
