A More Civilized Age: A Star Wars Podcast - 69: Taris Pt. 1 (Knights of the Old Republic 01)
Episode Date: August 24, 2023An even longer time ago, in a galaxy approximately the same level of far, far away, there was Knights of the Old Republic, a Computer Role-Playing Game based on D&D's D20 system. Natalie and Rob never... heard the story of Darth Malak, probably because it is not a story the Jedi would tell you. But Bioware, back in 2003, told everyone this story and along the way invented the kind of RPG the game studio would be known and renowned for across the next two decades. It is unintentionally sad but unsurprising that on the week we start our playthrough of KOTOR, BioWare had another round of layoffs that pushed some of the people who made this game and many others out of a company they did so much to build, and our thoughts and well-wishes are with those folks and we hope we can do their contributions some justice as we play through KOTOR. As for this episode, we discuss the opening tutorial and the characters we created, as well as the party's initial crash landing on the planet Taris. We cover some of the early missions and people you meet, but stop short of descending to the lower levels. We haven't picked out a walkthrough we would recommend for folks but DO NOT CONSULT WOOKIEEPEDIA. For some reason every article touching on the contents of this game contains major plot spoilers upfront.

Let us return once more to a more civilized age, formerly a Star Wars podcast, and once again a Star Wars podcast, and maybe this is the most civilized age of all.
You thought the Republic, sorry, you thought the, yeah, I guess it was the old Republic, what they thought was the old Republic, but now we're on an even older Republic.
And maybe that is an even more civilized game
before crude Sabak came over and took over the galaxy
and everyone was playing
Pizak. Pizak, please.
No Pizak.
Pizak.
I won't have you do this to noble Pazak.
It's fun.
It's not so noble.
An impossible game.
In my opinion.
What?
It's Blackjack.
It's Blackjack.
It's blackjack, but you have bonus cards.
It's hand-building blackjack.
I have thoughts.
We are as always supportive, but you are listeners via patreon.com slash civilize.
So head over there if you'd like to support the show and get access to all our Q&A episodes.
But yes, we are doing Bioware's Knights of the Old Republic, which is sort of our detour project while the writer strike and the actor's strike and kind of the everyone in Hollywood.
but for the studio head strike plays out.
You want to know more about that.
Obviously, we just recorded an episode with Adam Conover
talking through those issues
and sort of the industry landscape in Hollywood right now.
But to sort of fill our time
and also maybe fill in some gaps in our Star Wars knowledge,
we have gone back to Knights of the Old Republic.
And Austin, can you tell us a little bit about like,
why was it so crucial that Natalie and I finally be inducted into the ways of the Sith?
That I can't tell you quite.
Okay, wait, are you playing dark side?
Is it going to go a dark side mode?
I guess we'll find out.
Of course the Rob is.
Of course he is.
Let me set the stage.
Let me set the stage.
This is the 10th game or the 10th release that BioWare made.
They'd made the Baldersgate games.
They had released Ice Rundale 1 and 2, and I want to say,
Never Winner Knights, and maybe the first Never Winner Knight's expansion.
And then the two Outlier games that, like, no one ever thinks about with them, which is MDK2,
the action game and Shattered Steel, the mech game, the actual first game they ever made,
was a first person like Mech Warrior style game called Shattered Steel.
It was all right.
Then they made this.
And I think that like from the, from the gamer perspective, this is like such a sea change,
because this comes out, it is built for the Xbox, the original X-Box.
the original Xbox, in such a way that the entire
presentational, you know, proposition that it's making is we can bring
the type of thing that people love in Baldur's Gate into, or in
our computer RPGs, to a console audience.
But to do that, we have to change the presentation.
We can't just be an isometric, sprite-based game.
We have to become a contemporary 3D, you know,
exploration-focused game.
that has voice act, constant voice acting, that does, I wouldn't say cinematic camera cuts during
conversations, but like moves between different perspectives isn't just like text box driven.
You know, kind of the opposite decision that Bethesda was making from with Morrowind,
which is like, fuck it, put it on console.
Why not?
And I think both of those strategies are pretty successful, but in different ways.
And in a real way, nice of the old republic marks the beginning of this kind of middle phase
of the BioWare arc, where they make this,
they make Jade Empire, and then from there,
you know, they're continuing to make PC games.
They're still making Niverner Knights 2 and stuff like that.
But then they make Mass Effect,
and that ends up being the, like, the,
you can kind of like bookend this and then Mass Effect
where you can say, like, okay,
these are blending computer and video game ideas.
And then for Mass.
Like 2-4, they are in the console video game market
in a real way.
As a Star Wars fan, Knights of the Older
public is the place that a lot of pre, you know, actually it's not just pre, like contemporary
imperial era stuff. It's actually, you know, there's some references forward in weird ways
eventually. But a lot of the EU stuff that was explicitly about the various pre-imperial
era, pre-prequel era stuff, becomes way more accessible for people who aren't going to go
read, not accessible in an accessibility way, but way more, you know, a thing you can go into the
store and buy and then play for 40 hours instead of needing to go to your comic shop and
like, I want to hear about the old republic, where do I begin, what trade paperbacks do I need
to buy, what single issues do I need to buy, what EU novels does that stuff drip into?
So much of that shows up in Knights of the Old Republic. So in some ways, we're going to get
a little tasting menu of some EU stuff here. And also, it added a bunch to,
the canon that would end up shaping a lot of side content to come.
How much of this has slipped into contemporary new ongoing Star Wars canon, the Disney
canon?
Very little of it, I believe.
You may recall that when we watched the Mortis arc, there had briefly been a Darth
Revin was going to be in that episode talking to the brother when he went to go get help
to figure out what he had to do, but George cut that. George was like, you know what, I'd
change my mind. No Sith should be in this episode. The brother needs to be his own darkness
or whatever, or has to be something more primordial than the Sith. But I think that for a whole
generation of players, this game came out in 2003, and it started shaping their ideas around
what Star Wars could be and imagining other versions of other Star Wars eras. And I think
it's probably worth it just to set the stage as to, like, what goes on here?
This first episode, we're going to cover character creation, the Endar Spire, which is your
kind of tutorial zone, and then the upper city area of Terrace, which we'll come back to
in the next episode or the one after that, because there's still, like, side stuff that you can go
and complete in that area.
The setup, should we just read the text scroll?
Do we just want to people?
Absolutely.
It's a good text call.
It has a lot of, like, uh-huh.
Moments.
Rob, do you want to read it?
Do I'm going to post it for you to read?
Sure.
I want that.
I want the Rob Zachny voice on this.
Here we go.
All right.
Let me just tap over here.
Yeah.
Knights of the old Republic.
4,000 years before the rise of the Galactic Empire, the Republic verges on collapse.
Darth Malach, last surviving apprentice of the
Dark Lord Revan has unleashed an invincible Sith Armada upon an unsuspecting galaxy.
Crushing all resistance, Malach's war of conquest has left the Jedi Order scattered and
vulnerable, as countless knights fall in battle, and many more swear allegiance to the new
Sith master. In the skies above the outer rimworld of Taurus, a Jedi battle fleet engages
the forces of Darth Malak in a desperate effort to halt the Sith's galactic domination.
I think it's Malik.
Fuck.
It's not Malac?
Malac is kind of,
Malac kind of bangs.
Molot.
Molok and Reven?
You're going Molok, you have to go like Mal,
like malicious.
And I know,
I know Carth says those names to you at some point,
but he was saying a lot of stuff.
He'll let me tell you.
And I was like,
and then he would not shut the fuck up, actually.
He wouldn't.
Oh, welcome.
And so here's the other thing.
Like, I know that the Baldersgate games have companions.
I know that some of these archetypes existed before Cotor.
But you were about to meet every bioir companion you'll ever meet in another
bioir game.
They're fucking all here already, fully formed, ready to just gestate and become variously different
mutated versions over the next dozen years of games that they put out.
Carth is one of those dudes.
You just, you know, you met Cart.
He's a tutorial guy.
tutorial white tutorial human he's here yeah you know what there's so much to say about him and
i can't wait i can't fucking wait so here are the things that we did in this episode we uh escape
the endar spire we wake up in the endar spire as a new recruit or a new transfer i guess depending
i don't remember what the class differences are the way that trask olgo the guy who wakes you up
explains to you why you're there very video gamey intro go your stuff's over in that foot locker soldier
Also, you can try many times to derail it and be like, I don't give a shit about this Jedi lady.
And it's like, I'm sorry, these conversational options are for appearances.
This is only going to go the one way.
It's only going to go the one way.
And please don't forget to use ZR to target the box before opening.
He's so protective of you.
Stop here and equip a melee weapon.
Like, thanks, man.
You want me to open this door for you?
I'll open the door for you.
I'm good at hacking.
For some reason.
You escape the Endar Spire at the very end.
We'll go over the, we'll go through this, I think.
Endar Spire is a spaceship.
It's in battle, as Rob just explained, over the planet of Terrace, the rim world of
terrorists.
You fight your way through it.
You see some Jedi and Sith fighting, which is fun.
You run into Carth.
You take the last escape pod off of the ship and then land and wake up in an apartment
building next to where your escape pod lay.
You come to learn a little bit about terrace as you explore the apartment building, and then we explored the kind of upper level of terrace, the kind of rich section of the city where there is a canteena, where you can play some cards, you can do some dueling, you can buy some equipment from nearby, there's a lady who sells droids you meet, there's a clinic that you can go.
Yeah, we need to talk about talking her.
We will, we will.
I have things to say.
You attend a party, you meet some Sith officers, you do some fighting.
You know, there's a bunch of stuff going on there.
And all in the aim of trying to locate...
I forgot to go to the party.
Yeah, I didn't go to a party.
There's a party.
I forgot to go.
I got invited.
I forgot to go.
Okay, I should have drawn the line as to where.
Okay, you'll have to do that.
That's the first thing you have to do.
I'm going to spoil what happens there.
I was just getting scammed.
It's very, it's very mid in the sense of, I should have, what I should have said,
explicitly was you should go down the elevator and then save because it's the only way down
the elevator is to go to the party. I see. Okay. Unless you found another way to go down the
elevator. Sorry. Yeah. How did you go down the elevator? So I just, look, I was having
a rough time. Okay. Can we talk like character builds? Let's start at the way. Okay. We'll end
at how do we go down the elevator. I didn't realize there was another way because I just do this because
it's so easy every time. Um, all right, character builds. Who do you, who are you all playing as?
I am increasingly playing as my standard now.
Go-to RPG first time through, like, archetype, which is the mouthiest punk nerd possible.
So, like, maxed out charisma and really left everything else pretty low.
So I get more conversation.
Like, charisma intelligence.
Yeah.
Guy, can the guy lift?
You were scoundrel?
No.
Went with scoundrel.
because Soldier seemed, it was like,
it was a term between Scoundrel and Scout.
Yeah, there's three,
there's Scoundrel Scout and Soldier.
Soldier did not feel compatible with my vision.
No, Soldier is super fighting mode.
Very, very strong in this game.
I think probably very strong in this opening act.
Oh, incredibly strong in this opening act.
But I did not do that.
Generally speaking,
generally speaking, the fandom really likes scoundrel
and soldier because they push
those directions really strong,
really fighting or really skill.
heavy and or really sneak attack heavy scoundrel gets sneak attack which is powerful um so you went
scoundrel you went talky you went 16 decks or sorry 16 charisma 17 you went 17 you're ready
for that 18 box i paid all those prices i was like i don't care for people who don't know
i don't need to fight not true i aware apparently has some different not true on the degree
to which you should be able to and you know what i shouldn't thought about this because this is how
Mass Effect works. You can't talk your way out of anything
Mass Effect. You can talk your way out of like
a mini encounter, but that's not
what they, like, this is not Baldersgate
3, right, where it's like, oh,
no, we create an entire line of play where you just
like talked your way out of this. Okay, it's not
Boulder's Gate 3, but let me tell you what thing it does better is
and we haven't really gotten there yet, but at
any point, you can pause the game,
pull up your party composition screen
and change who's in your party.
You don't have to fucking, you don't have to go back
to camp and
talk to an individual
and it's super easy to change your people around, move their items around.
It's like you have to have an HR meeting every time you want to change your party.
And they've got to feel some way about it.
You've got to be like, hey, can you just hang here for a little bit?
And they've got to be like, I guess I'll just eat dirt.
That's what fucking Carlyke literally says that in Baldur's Gate 3.
Come on, chill.
I'm just trying to bring someone else for their quest.
Like, anyway.
So Rob, scoundrel, talkie.
Name?
Do you have a name?
Oh, I let the name generate.
The name generator gifted me.
Same.
It gifted me.
Uh-huh.
So you all have, you all have heard about his stat line, but now you'd meet the man himself.
Dup's Polo!
Dup!
Dup's is so good.
Dup's polo is really good.
Wow.
All right.
Good.
Who's up?
Who has their follow-up to Dups?
It's a hard act of fun.
follow.
It is.
I guess I'm pretty similar to Rob.
Talky.
I'm a talkie talker.
I went for scoundrel as well.
And I'll post a pick of, I'll post my character's portrait.
Yeah, please.
What do we think of these portraits, by the way?
You know.
Variable.
Variable.
Yeah, the quality, the quality definitely, I went for like best looking polygon.
I went with the bald guy
With the little like mustache and
Oh sure I know exactly the guy you're talking about
Because they didn't try to give that guy
Pronounced cheekbones
Yeah
And so he does not have the terrifying axe head
Of several of the characters
That are like strong carved sheetbones
And I'm like a little too carved
I know exactly what you mean
Yeah yeah yeah
Yeah
This is her
This is Tana Khan
Tana Khan
Tana Khan, love it
Tana or Tana
Tana
Sure
Tana Khan
Great
She is
Yeah like I said
A scoundrel
She's getting a plus three on her
On her computer use
That means her
Yeah I went up
Up on computers
She's a gamer
She's a gamer
She is absolutely a gamer
She
Has zero friends
But she
Is pretty charismatic
Um, mostly kind of as a, yeah, as a way of, of getting out of doing anything for anyone
other than herself.
Yeah.
Um, she, yeah, so she has a, uh, I gave her a plus two.
I just did.
I, I, I wasn't really sure what I was getting into in, I haven't played a lot of, this is
3.0 D&D rules and it's not even really them.
And so it's easy to not know.
if you're building what right and so please if you just did auto awesome auto that will be fine
that will take you through the fucking game truly i'm i i feel like as i get as i i don't know how
much of the game is going to hide what kind of skill like what level skill because i i noticed
on couple some of my persuasion checks i guess i failed right um the earlier ones i passed and i was
like, okay, I can, you know. You can't persuade a hut if that's what you're talking about.
Yeah, you can't persuade that guy. I truly think you can't persuade that guy for that at that
point. Maybe I'm wrong there. Maybe if you go all the way in and see your scum. Maybe. I mean,
listen, I get it. Like, the cut's the cut. You got to make. Yeah, exactly. He wants his 10%.
You know? I get it. You know, there's precedent, obviously. I'm coming. I can't disrupt the
whole economy that he's got running here. Right. I relate to that. You're, you're, you're
just would have let me say that piece.
Right.
Maybe he could have seen me as someone who understands and throw me an extra two.
Maybe you should have, you just want to show, you just want him to show that he's like, give me something.
You know what I mean?
Yeah.
Like, let's, it's a healthy thing.
Negotiations are healthy things to any business relationship.
Give a little, a take a little, give a little, take a little, take a little.
That's how you develop trust.
So all I was interesting
Listen, if I'm going to be your star
But this is the thing, maybe you should have waited to negotiate
Until you would already prove that you were in it like that
Take out Dead Eye Duncan
Take out girl on two fingers
You know what I mean?
Dead Eye Duncan was out before
You can be Rob
You can be girl on two fingers?
Dump's is not a duelist
Oh no
Like
If it were like, if it were like a debate club, if it was like Dup's Polo, the mysterious stranger versus girl on two fingers. Now, what say you to the swoop gang question? Right.
Representing the pro case. Right. Dup's Polo. I think I got this. I would, I would drag that piece of shit all around that arena, rhetorically speaking. But unfortunately, it's not.
that.
All right, we're going to need to get you some equipment.
We're going to need to get you some...
You might want to hide behind Carth, and Carth ain't that guy.
This is what the thing is.
Eventually, you're going to have other people who can stand in front of you and take
some shots, you know?
I try to buy a droid and die immediately.
Okay, we'll get there.
Yeah, what the fuck.
We'll get there.
We'll get there.
Anyway, that's, that's, uh, Tana.
She's, uh, she's having a lot of fun so far.
So far, so good.
Everything's kind of gone up, gone, gone, gone up for Tana.
Except for the
Karen in the canteena.
The Karen in the canina.
Yeah.
And the hut.
But outside of that, it's been fine.
Oh, I know what you're talking about.
We'll talk about the canteen in a second.
Allie.
Hi.
Who are you playing us?
Yeah, I'm playing a soldier by the name of Saint Sanna.
Sain Sanna.
Yeah, which was a,
auto jan name that I was like yeah this is the one um I went really I wasn't I was like
timid about my skills so I really um average them out except I put an extra bit in um
strength and dexterity to check out sure to start out with and I took it out of wisdom
this makes sense what's your wisdom what's your wisdom are you under 10 right now is
12. Okay, you're fine. Yeah. You're just like a maybe, you're spread, you're spread evenly
at positives. You're not, you don't have anything really up there. You don't have a six,
do you have a 16 anything? Are you like, no, no, no. My highest is a 14 index, which is a plus
two. Gotcha. Yes. So yeah, so this is the thing for people who've never played one of these like
3.0 or 3.5 D&D games or any like, I mean, Balder's Gate is using a lot of the basic things
here. You got six stats. Um, they, they range in score generally from like eight to 16 at the
beginning of a game. You can get them up to 17 if you're Rob. You really want that high, that high
persuasion, that high charisma. Um, the, you get bonuses to rolls. Okay, the thing that's
happening behind the scenes is the game is rolling a 20-sided die and it's adding your bonuses from
any skills and any attribute bonuses. So for instance, I'm looking at Tata here. Tana has a zero in,
in computer use but has a plus three
because presumably her intelligence is
16, 12, 14, 16, 18
give you plus 1 plus 2 plus 3 plus 4
so roll in that D20
and then it's checking the
adding that plus 3 from the 16
intelligence and then it adds
that's it, did you do it or didn't you?
Except that this game also is just doing a bunch
of other weird shit
because for instance your computer
use score is actually
part of like not only
can you do a thing in
dialogue, for instance, but like, how many computer spikes does it take for you to hack
something? So for each, for getting, when you get more computer.
I've been checking my count. What do you mean?
Stuff's just been opening for me. Oh, then when I am like, that part's fine.
If you're like, uh, if you're like, I want to, I want to, um, security open this door for
instance. That part is fine. The thing that security spikes do, will either,
give you a bonus to the role.
So, like, if you're failing the role, you can burn a security spike to open it.
And then in certain, if you remember on the Endar Spire, you get to the bit where there's
like the, there's the, like, repair of the droid or hack the, yeah, or hack the computer
to, like, blow up their thing, which I don't know if you did either of those.
That's a thing where it's like, okay, use repair parts, you know, use the repair parts or use
computer spikes to do the thing.
So certain dialogue options
will take these consumable resources
and it'll take less if you're better at
the thing. And then there's other shit
that's just like truly it's
a very weird game
in a lot of ways
the way it adapts this stuff. But generally
speaking, the thing you want to make sure
you get to is your strength of your decks
should be pretty high. This is a really
combat-focused game. When you start to get
equipment or more
ability points to put in, try to get
at least one of those up to around 16
because that'll give you
a better chance of hitting stuff.
Generally, Dex is good for guns.
Generally, strength is good for melee weapons.
Your strength bonus gets added
to all of your melee damage bonus
for the entire game.
It's always good to have a little extra decks
or a little extra strength.
Dex adds to your defense.
It makes it harder for you to get hit
on top of aiming ranged weapons.
Kahn gives you more
HP, wisdom lets you see traps, and charisma lets you do talky stuff, but eventually will also
be useful in another way, is all I will say.
No, the character created tells you this up front.
Oh, good.
Okay.
So then charisma gives you fucking force points later.
So it's being your manopool later, basically.
So, yes.
And also, here's the other thing.
I'm just going to say this up front, because you already said this.
I don't see if you go to the workbench, you can see right away that you can work on lightsabers,
right?
And you can see, you know, you're going to get Bastila.
as a lightsaber-wielding character in this section of the game.
Lightsabers can use strength or decks to hit, but they still use strength as like a damage
bonus.
Oh, an allusion to the different fighting styles.
Sort of, kind of.
Now, let me tell you a game that does this right.
Knights of the Old Republic 2 puts all the fighting styles in this fucking game.
I'm missing a lot of Cotor 2 stuff in this game already, but we'll talk about that
at some other future date.
I'm playing
Kellyn Kallon
who is a scout
My focus is
I think I'm going fairly combat-e
If I'm remembering right
I should have written down
I have it right here
Let me peek at my guy
Yeah I'm going
I was imagining this guy is like a scout
Is like someone who
You know goes out and explores
The thing that Carth
Or no maybe Trask says it
One of them in the beginning is like
asks you what your deal is and your guy is like I you know before I got pulled into this I was
exploring the outer the furthest reaches of the galaxy I was like trailblazing through the
through the galaxy okay so yeah 16 strength 14 decks and then like kind of talky 12 talky 12
int 13 con I'm trying to get that con up the thing about scouts is that they get there's that
feat that is like cybernetic implants or whatever, you just get those feats for free as you level up.
And so I started with the thing that just gives me a flat plus one constitution.
And I don't need to take that feat to get more cybernetic implants.
So I guess I'm a little bit of a cyborg.
I'm a little bit of a cyborg, you know, which in Star Wars we know it means you're evil,
generally, or a lobot, I guess we've mentioned.
And so I guess I am not currently committed to being dark-sided.
I've been making light-side options.
But I'm curious, what do you think your vibes are?
Are you going to be, is Carth annoying enough to drive you to the dark side?
He is pretty fucking annoying.
He's pretty annoying.
I don't know.
Are you just playing default goodie, you know?
It's funny that it doesn't have the bioware thing.
thing of like telling you what which response right will lead you to what direction because
I I didn't realize that I was putting doing things one way or another until I was
collecting bounties for Davick I didn't have any questions about that are you doing it are you
collecting the bounties just what Natalie said oh not the way Natalie said it know what this meant
I just killed these people I haven't killed well
I
Okay
I haven't collected any bounties yet
But there was one point at which
Somebody was like
Like I selected an option
And it was like light side up
And I was like oh okay
Yeah
This is being tracked
I'm being watched
Back in back in this old old
Republic area
Light side up
The
I guess before we move further
Are there any of their mechanical questions
and then we don't have to talk about this
unless it comes up?
But like, do you all understand the difference
between flurry, critical shot
and power shot?
Do you know?
No, everyone's shaking your heads.
What are those?
Okay, great.
Well, I just know when I want to be strong,
I use a power shot.
Okay.
It's my special attack.
Your special attack.
How do you know when you want to be strong?
When I'm fighting a guy.
Okay, so you generally are using power shot.
So I couldn't hit anyone.
No, yeah.
Rob, you should not have a sniper shot.
Okay, well, that doesn't actually change.
Trask is over there just buzz sawing
through dudes on the Enderspire.
And I'm like, blue, blue, blue.
And it's like, miss, miss, miss.
And I was like, okay, a critical shot.
And my guy, like, takes a long aiming animation.
And I'm like, you can do a buddy.
You can do it.
He's like, blah.
And he got it?
Two hit points.
Oh, boy.
Oh, brother.
And I was like, all right.
I pitched in.
I set him up, Trask.
You knock him down, bro.
Okay, so I'm going to give you the two big directions here.
What is, generally speaking, you're either going to want to pick up the dueling-like feats,
which are like, you get one weapon.
You got a sword or you got a gun, right?
And you get bonuses when you have one, one-handed weapon.
Or fuck it.
You want to go two weapon fighting.
You want to get multiple stuff.
It's a little early for that.
So, like, don't feel too rushed about it.
I pulled out two swords already.
Well, you can do it.
You can do it if you have the right stats for it.
I don't think it was a good idea, but I was out there.
Most important thing in the game is if you hit the Y button on a switch controller
and you have a weapon out, like a sword, your character will do a little flourish while
you're running around.
So it's like a thing to do when you're running around and you just want to like have like an animation play, you know?
You know, like when you're running around is Mario and you're like, I'm not trying to jump
on anything, but I am just trying to jump real quick.
like just to have a little, just have a little extra thing.
You hit that button and like your character, like, whoo-woo, with their weapons.
Mine doesn't.
Do you have a sword or a gun?
Gun.
It doesn't work with a gun.
Mealy weapons only.
Yeah, with a gun, it would be cool if you're like, you know.
Yeah, a little.
Yeah, exactly.
You know, swords only.
The second thing I want to say is really quick, this is what it is.
The way those three things work, like flurry, rapid shot, critical shot, critical attack,
or power or whatever.
Flurry is, you add an extra attack, but it's harder to hit.
Power attack is you hit harder, but it's harder to hit.
And critical shot is, it's easier to crit.
And critical shot, you just do it.
Like, there's no downside to critical shotting.
So Rob, you should always be critical shoting.
As far as I recall, critical shot does not have the thing that the other ones do
where it's like you get hit easier or you, you, you,
It's harder for you to have.
I found my real power move on the underspire, though.
Okay.
Well, let's talk about it.
What's your power move?
The one thing my guy's good at is explosives.
And so I am just, like, tossing grenades like I'm on a Mardi Gras float.
Like, I am just, I'm just like, here, have some, have some fragmentation grenades,
congas grenades, acid grenades.
Yep.
And that is getting me through an awful lot because that's just, now is that expensive?
prohibitively so
now a lot of characters
drop grenades
so it does replenish a bit
but like
I am bringing you through
Girlon you couldn't grenade
your way through Girlon two fingers
Girlon if you
so it's interesting
so the first fight with Girlon
because you're in the dueling ring
and everything first one I almost beat him
with a sword and I was like
this guy ain't shit
and the next one he just cuts me down
and I was like okay I just rolled
really lucky in the first fight
right right I'm gonna get him with grenades
Like they said nobody dies in the pit
So I'm just gonna get him with grenades
You pull the grenade out
He charges you and outruns the grenade
And so he's in under grenade range
And then I was like
Well now he's stuck near me
So I'm gonna get him
And I blew myself up
Not him blew myself up
So that didn't work
You'll get him next time
Yeah and well no actually
So right before we did get on this
I did finally
Get through the Girlon fight
Oh
using four med packs
yeah not worth it
using four med packs
you saved before that
adrenal spikes
I saved many
so I also keep fucking up my saves
so I keep saving it the worst times
where I was like oh shit I just
wasted a bunch of resources
but I also haven't saved in 20 minutes
I'm just saved now
so that I don't
so at least I stop wasting resources
and then something else happens
right so anyway
so then I'm like
I'm just not kidded out to face this guy.
I need armor.
And I go to the armor store
and I buy something called light combat armor.
Which you would think would be light armor.
No, it's medium armor.
So I immediately have to return the armor to the armor shot.
A 50 credit haircut on that.
And then in my inventory and I've got Sith armor.
And I was like, you didn't do the party?
Or you did do the party.
I don't know what party you're talking about.
I just had Sith armor.
Where do you get the Sith armor that's not the party?
So you burst through a door on some Sith soldiers that are like rousting a dude.
And they're like, where's the Sith armor?
But the weird thing is the dialogue is like, he's like, I can't give you the Sith armor already, like, traded it to people.
But then in my inventory, there was just Sith armor.
Like one of them must have dropped it or something.
Yeah, you take it from the guys that you kill.
He's specifically like, I don't have it.
But if you want to take one of those uniforms on the floor right now, then go ahead.
And I was like, all right, man.
And so with that Sith armor, like, they just,
walk, just let me go to that elevator.
Yes.
Okay.
So the other way you can get the Sith armor is by meeting someone at the bar who's like,
it's so hard to be out in the, in the world.
Oh, maybe I met someone.
Wait, who did you meet?
Who did you talk to?
I met that guy.
So that guy won't talk to me because I'm a guy.
I talk to everyone in the bar.
Oh, he likes me.
Yeah, yeah.
I know.
I know because what he told me was, get out of here.
You're blowing up my spot.
I'm trying to, I'm trying to date somebody.
There's another lady in the bar who is a Sith officer who is like, oh, I hate being deployed on this backwater.
And you've got to be like, yes, sister, I feel for you.
I feel for you.
You know, you've got to just got to blow off some steam sometime.
And she's like, you know, you're right.
You know what?
Me and a bunch of the junior officers are going to have a party later tonight.
Why don't you come by and we'll have a good time?
And then you go and they get fucking drunk off Theresean ale and pass out.
And you just rob them and take their Sith armor.
Wow.
Okay, where is the party?
You're not going to...
My guess is when you talk to the lady, you are a woman.
And this game is...
But no, but the guy invited me to his party.
Oh, okay.
The woman's also just in the canteen.
Yeah, well, I did talk to a woman who thought I was a waiter.
Oh, there's a different lady.
Not her.
She sucks.
Yeah.
Did she jump you?
Yeah, outside, and I killed her boys.
Let's go.
That's right.
I just said, oh, yeah, I'll get you.
drink, ma'am. And then the waiter appeared. So I have so much charisma that just by being like,
you're right, I'll go see that order, ma'am. I caused the front of house staff to like, you know,
I think you just gave someone a look that's the look of you've worked in food service before and
you're communicating, yo, she's, she's all when she's about to blow, just bring her something.
Just bring her something and keep her calm and then everything was good, you know?
yeah if you fail that she'll jump you with her boys and yeah well in some ways i wish i'd
failed that check because fuck the fuck them boys you know yeah yeah i got jumped and then i heard
like a lady scream and run away but i couldn't follow up on yeah i lost her as soon as soon as
i killed she's gone she's gone and let me tell you don't look up anything about this game because i
was like well what's her deal because i passed that persuasion check and i was like is that the end
of that character like what's she what else does she do
And looking up the character, like, her nothing character, like, bio, spoils Knights of the Old Republic.
Like, literally on her nothing thing, it says big spoilers.
So, like, don't.
And not because she's related to it.
Do you know what I mean?
She's in the game.
Just to set the stage.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah.
So, like, don't look up anything about this.
Please come to me and alley with questions when you have questions.
So, honestly, I did buy, so weirdly enough, for the armor that looks so awesome,
The Sith armor is only like two armor points.
Which sucks.
I think if you look like something that fell off the Chrysler building, you should be a fucking badass.
Yeah.
Can you describe what it looks like for people who haven't seen the Sith armor in this game?
Because it doesn't look like anything else.
You've ever seen the Chrysler building?
So you kind of look like a hood ornament on a 1930s like luxury car.
It's all like beautiful, like streamlined silver with like a Romanesque.
like mailed skirt type thing toward the bottom.
But it's also got this like creepy.
It's not like,
there's a lot of things that like have echoes
of the Mandalorian shit in this game,
which maybe has something to do with the fact
that a massive war with the Mandalorians
is apparently just wrapped up
and may have been the precipitating event
for this entire crisis.
But the,
the armor sort of has this like full head wrap,
you know,
scene like univiser thing
over the face but it like
it comes on so low that like the characters
wearing the Sith armor effectively have no faces
and even the eye slot is like
disconcertingly low for for where they are
it almost looks like the characters are
you know in some ways like
Luke's blast helmet
in A New Hope right
it's a bit like the you know
blinked out militarized version of that
Yeah, I love it. It's also shiny in a way that lots of games still aren't. They picked some sort of weird way to render the shininess. I don't mean still aren't as like, and therefore it's better, but I think it's like a really effective look for an Xbox era game, you know? And you first see them. I'll get us back on track on the Endar Spire. You show up on the Endar Spire. You wake up, you meet Trask Olgo. You fight your way through these hallways, like I said. Any thoughts about the Endar Spire?
stuff any any
I love Halo
it does have the halo opening
doesn't it it is
like master chief right down to the
like the sleeper his awakened yeah
uh-huh it's
it's like we gotta get out of here
you're just like ripping through like
all these dudes they pour aboard the
you know pour onto the ship
obviously you're supposed to be badass who's just
woken up but this is a bit like
for me it's like if
for me my master chief is Trask
Like, thank you for your service.
I'd be cutting the trailer for, like, Knights of the Old Republic, too.
It's been, like, one of those old, like, halo, like, ads where it's, like, Band of Brothers style.
It's me, my character, Dup's Polo.
Be, like, and I woke up, and I thought I'd never make it off the Ender Spire.
But then I saw Trass come through that door, and I knew we were going to be okay.
I never saw that man again.
There was, there was a Sith, there was a Sith warrior.
and he said
you get to the escape pod
I got this
and the door closed
and the door closed
and then the bulkhead exploded
if we
if we get to Cotor 2
you should play
as Trask won't go
Trask's back
this fall
Cotor 2
finish the fight
or start it
in Trask's case
I look so much like Tras
I the portrait
that I chose
is the blonde lady with the butch haircut and blue eyes.
Oh, she does have Trask energy.
So once he was on screen, I was like, are you my brother?
Are you here for me?
Are you related?
We're bonded.
That's so funny.
You should have had Olgo as your last name, the Olgo twins.
That would have been fun.
Yeah.
Any other and our spire thoughts?
I feel like I get, I get, tutorials are hard.
Yeah.
Tutorials, like figuring out how to tell people how to play a game without breaking immersion, you know, it's a tough thing.
I don't like looking at a paragraph of text in which there are button commands inside of it.
I'm like, I can't parse it.
It just, it goes right over my head.
I'm like, okay, dialogue advance.
Yeah.
But I will say that I really enjoy, I think it is an effective tutorial sequence by the end of it.
Like, you do get to do a little bit of everything.
Yeah.
That sequence where you fix the robot or hack the computer is like the one sequence where you're like, oh, I get what this game is going to be now.
I didn't, yeah, I didn't realize you could hack the robot until after.
Gotcha.
Did you do the computer?
Just open the door.
I turned the robot on
and then I went over to the CCTV TV type thing
and just watched the robot
kill an entire room full of Sift Troopers
and I was like, oh, that's cool.
Like, that's fun.
That's neat.
That is cool.
I did the computer first
because I was like, I'm a computer gal.
I'd be on the computer.
You choppered that.
I went, yeah, I chapered it.
I went to the computer.
And you did the thing where you just overload
the energy conduit
and just instant kill five.
guys yeah yeah it's good yeah it's good i enjoyed it yeah yeah get ready you're gonna be doing more
of that this so that's a lot of this game uh i'm happy about it because like there's like it's not
an immersive sim right but yeah but there's a little bit of that like how do you want to get through
the dungeon um energy to it which is you affordances to let you do like cool stuff go a long
way in games 100 they really do yes yes especially in a game where like the combat is not
doesn't feel interactive sometimes. I think it looks really good. I think we didn't say here
is like, I remember playing this game for the first time in 2003 and being like, oh, they're swinging
swords at each other and they're blocking hits and there's like clank, clank, clank, like,
and there's interlocking. It's not just like I swim, you know, if you've come from JRP's where
it's one side does the attack and the other side does the attack and they go over and they swing
and they hop back in line. It's not Fire Emblem. And it's not Fire Emblem. Right. Yeah. And the other half of it is
it's not Baldur's Gate, which is just literally guys going, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh,
like attack animation at each other or, or like an RTS or something, right?
Um, it's literally like a cool set of animations where your guys trying to dodge and like,
you know, move out of the way and stuff.
Um, that stuff is, is really neat.
And it's especially cool when you see it with like, they know they got something because
they're like, we're going to show a Jedi and a Sith fighting with lightsabers.
Because if you're a range character, you're not going to see these animations yet.
We're going to show them to you, you know.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And then, yeah, Carth.
You meet Carth.
Carth, I think you first hear on the Endar Spire being like,
we got to get to the escape pods.
Get to the escape pods.
I'm like, all right, dude.
There's nothing left to do, but go to the escape pods.
Exactly, yes.
And then you meet him, and he's like, get in the escape pod.
And you do.
And you do, and you land on Terrace.
Taras is right.
I always want to say Taurus, but everyone in the game says terrorists, so I guess it's
terrorists.
And you get visions, though, before you wake up, right?
You do get your dream.
It's a buyer game.
Time for a dream sequence.
What do you see in the dream?
Jedi Lady.
Jedi Lady.
Doing Jedi Lady.
Doing Jedi Lady stuff, yeah.
Uh-huh.
And there's black dream smoke.
There is the dream smoke.
This is true.
And then we get to talk to Carth about some of this stuff.
What is, what do we learn from Carth?
What is, like, the, I mean, we learn about Carth.
That Revan, that something, Malak.
Malik?
Malik.
Malik.
No, I like Malak.
God, we're going to go with Malak.
Okay.
I'm with them because it's not N-A-L-I-K.
Okay.
Right.
I'm just saying how the people in the game say it.
No, I know.
They're wrong, and it should be Taurus as well.
Okay, I'll go with you on Taurus.
Maybe if they'd learn to say his name, he wouldn't have turned.
No, it should be terrorists.
Malik, Malak.
Malak.
I swear to God, if they call me Malik one more fucking time, I'm done.
God, I don't give a shit.
Maybe this is it, right?
Because the thing is, Kart says, they went to the outer rim to fight the Mandalorians.
And something changed them.
Something corrupted.
Because they were Jedi.
Revan and Malik were.
So does it kind of feel, so, yeah, what they lay out here is they, like the Jedi.
Yeah.
The Jedi mostly, the Republic, sorry, the Republic was in a huge.
knock down, dragout with the Mandalorians.
That's the vibe, right?
But, like, as we know, it's most of the Jedi that the Mandalorians have beef with.
So, like, who's really, like, steering the ship?
But it sounds like this was a huge, like, stalemate war.
And then these two Jedi brothers, right?
I don't think they're brothers.
I think they're brothers in the, yeah, like, homie sense.
Malik is, is per the opening crawl, or maybe it's per this conversation.
Malik is the remaining apprentice of Revan.
So it was a master apprentice situation.
Okay.
Right?
This is what if, what if Obi-Wan and Anakin decided to go fight the Mandalorians together, you know?
And then-
But it sounds like they basically went out there in the cleaned house.
That is the bottom.
We're going to get the decisive edge over the Mandalorians.
Like that war is effectively over in his waning stages.
But before anyone can even like pop the champagne, suddenly there,
Their entire army is like sworn allegiance to them personally.
And now they're coming back to invade the Republic and take out the Jedi.
That seems to be the vibe.
Yeah.
And and except Bastille let a team, he says, that went to go kill them both, only killed
Revin and then had to get out.
And now that's part of why she's being targeted, I guess, right?
Malik's being like, I can't say Malac.
I have to like train myself to do this stupid bit is coming to get her partly because
of that is the way it.
I mean, I guess he doesn't say that explicitly, but I know if someone came from my master.
Well, it's because of her force, it's for her force power.
That's right.
What is her force power?
Battle meditation.
That's right.
TM.
Real shit.
Battle meditation.
What's it do?
Republic forces.
I'm sending you my energy.
A lot of bad things in the world right now.
I send you my energy.
Uh-huh.
Through the force.
She's like the DJ Callid.
She has DJ Callid ability.
Do you know what Bastila?
opened up the Overwatch Championships, the Overwatch League Championship.
I was there. I was there.
You felt in the room. I was in the room. I saw it happen.
Through the force, she inspires her allies with confidence.
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. It makes her enemies lose their will to fight. I love that for her.
Yeah, that's useful. Yeah. These Jedi seem, so these Jedi go a little harder than the Jedi would know.
Like, they launched, they sent a special forces.
like kill team to take out of the Sith
Lord. And they did it.
And they just fucking did it. We read the book
where they refused to do this and then they sent
one guy and the former
who doesn't even do this. Who doesn't even do it?
It's not what he does. He's an art.
He's an art fraud like
enforcement agent.
And they're like, that's our assassin.
That's our guy.
We're going to learn a lot about the Jedi.
I think. Great job. Great job on
breaking up Antiques Roadshow.
Now we need you to kill Space.
I feel like if the former Jedi, if, like, if Bastilla met...
Oh, met like Mason, the R era, the prequel era?
It would be embarrassing.
It would be, like, they are, they're probably in the force, um, purgatory in the for,
and they're probably in the force just shaking their heads at Yoda.
bunch of little white dots like what the fuck have you let this yeah just like what the hell what the hell
how did we what the hell man make you imagine mace though mace being like I told them I told them
you could just be jettai we could just do all this we can go as hard as we wanted that's right
good guys and all these like other dead jadai are like hell yeah you are preach good guys that's right
um other stuff we know about about the Sith that we learned to do his car's conversation
um malax and ruthless tyrant who will crush anyone who stands in his way
the Sith have been taking over planets in the outer rim.
They, Carth, constantly describes them as being like this kind of ruthless occupation force.
And no doubt, I bet they are.
But what we see in Terrace, mostly they're just continuing things the way they were.
Yeah.
Well.
Because you leave this room and you find out that it's illegal for aliens to live in the upper levels of terrorists.
So much.
And it was like that from before.
And the Sith are just continuing that practice, that old tradition, we learn it's called, a noble tradition of terrorists.
Aliens aren't allowed up here.
Get out of here.
Unless you're a Twylic and you get a special card that lets Twylics up here.
I wonder why.
Fuck off.
It's wild.
But you do land in an apartment building that's having trouble renting.
Yes.
So, so this one apartment building is like under, under the radar renting to aliens, but they can't go.
You know that landlord's a piece of shit, too.
You know that landlord uses that shit.
They don't have central AC.
They don't have heating.
The power's out all the time.
That place is a hellhole.
Yeah.
Anytime anybody reports anything, he's like, oh, you know, I could just ask the, wait, what are you?
You're, you're, you're an alien.
You're an alien.
That's funny.
And what am I?
I'm a human.
Human.
Human.
You know how to say it?
And you're,
Muchitukapaka?
Yeah, I didn't think so.
Damn, you got it with that one.
Okay.
Oh, it's bad.
But that, but again.
It's so fucked.
It's so fucked.
And it's like, time to the phrase,
a legal alien less than an hour.
It's wild.
I was astounded.
I could not believe.
I could, like, also, where are these aliens?
people, non-Twilic, supposed to go about...
Like, they can't really go about the upper level at all.
Yeah.
This is like, this whole building is dealing in secrecy.
Yeah, because there's like an authority in there.
There's like, there's a few other alien.
There's a, yeah, yeah, yeah.
There's a couple of people who are like,
don't you know we're not supposed to speak to?
Like, we're not...
I'm not supposed to be here.
You're not supposed to speak to me.
It's also funny.
It's not even clear to me, like, to what degree of people squatting?
To what degree is there even a landlord in the picture?
Like, the janitor's still there, but he sort of seems like a dude who just like, as long as the auto pay keeps coming in, he will continue, like, making a show of like sort of half-assily mopping these floors, but kind of feels like, same as you just did.
Everyone has kind of just been like, okay, I got the door open.
So this is my apartment now.
The janitor's wild, too, because first of all, the vocal performance on him.
Oh, this is such old school voice acting
In this game
I love it
Yeah, they're goofy
Which like, Baldur's Day 3 won't get goofy
Do you know what I mean?
Like you won't ever meet this motherfucker
In Balders Gate 3
Let alone the old days
We used to be able to have a voice like his
As your characters like
The characters are written goofy
But there's no just performance where it's like
Oh, what's going on here?
And it's like somebody just wanted old Southern man
Okay
I guess there's an old Southern man on Terrace
The second thing is I love that he's like
You can ask him like
What do you think about the Sith?
And he's like, well, you know
I keep my nose clean.
I don't bother anybody.
They don't bother me.
Seemed basically the same as it was before.
You know?
Maybe they're going to clean up the swoop bike gangs.
That could be good, you know.
There is something just so immediately appealing about Cotor.
I know who you reminded me of.
Who's he remind you of?
Dennis Hopper in Hoosiers specifically.
Sure.
Say more.
But like a lot of Dennis Hopper characters,
but Dennis Hopper's character in Hoosiers,
he is like,
he is like the town.
drunk and also though he just he loves basketball he loves high school basketball and so he's a guy
who just cannot like shut the fuck up uh when you know when he gets a chance to finally like talk to
people about like his passion and so Dennis Hopper plays him with this like just desperate like oh
someone's talking to me but da da da da and it's all that sort of like I'm not really interested in this
other stuff but like oh boy that's a humdinger right there that was you got a great you had a great
team there. That boy can really hoop. That's sort of his vibe. And this janitor has that
sort of saying, oh, someone's talking to me. Well, you know, like, let me say my philosophy. I just
keep doing this. I'm an NPC. I just mop floors forever. Don't really care what's going on
outside this place because nothing changes. Right. To be fair. By the way, my man's about to have to
clean up some bodies because the first thing that happens after you leave that apartment complex as you
see the authoritarian, I think it's the authority. Maybe it's somebody else being.
No, it's the qualish dude.
That's the qualish dude, okay.
Yeah.
Being harassed by some Sith patrol.
No, he's got the bodies.
Oh, right.
He says, he's like, don't worry about it.
I'm going to hide the bodies.
We know how to deal with this.
That's great.
You come by later, there's just a belt.
There's shit on that belt, too.
You come back through and it's like, oh, that's just free loot from before.
He just left that for you.
He said, maybe the guy I'll come back through and pick up this loot.
Yeah, you fight them in the hallway.
No one seems to care.
It's fine, you know?
Yeah, nobody gives a shit.
There's also a merchant here that you can talk to who gives you the little lore drop as to why melee exists again in the world, which I love to jolk at that.
Because it's Dune, baby.
Because it's Dune.
Because the Achani, the Achani use these dueling blasters or doze dueling shields that can block blasters.
And the Sith brought them like to this part of the galaxy.
And strike teams use these these like personal shields to blast incoming or to block incoming.
laser fire or like blaster fire and so melee combat's back is like cultural as a thing
I love the EU because what happened here is someone was like there's this thing called the
Achani and I guess they did some dueling what if we use that what have we what have we said that
those became popular and that's why that's why people use swords again perfect no fighters are
back on the menu exactly 100% at least I think the Achani predate this game they must
Maybe they don't.
That dude also sells you in advance to self.
Sorry, we didn't talk about stealth.
So,
a lot of things go on your belt.
This is a belt-driven society.
It is like, so basically you can have your,
you have your personal shield generator,
or, and they teach you in this aboard the underspire,
you can buy the stealth field generator
that you wear on your waist.
But then the dude,
the twilight on the apartment building is like I have a really good one he does it's a better one
and so I just I bought it's like sound deadening so you get extra sneak on your sneak checks but it's
very funny when you activate it because you get this goofy like your characters just disappears
you get just like transparent field yeah yeah and so you command a little ghost as you just walk
your character around the level and nobody can see you yeah um
Last thing of this illegal alien stuff, before we talk more about what's up with terrorists.
You also learn that there is literally, like, again, this stuff isn't just it's institutional.
It's a cultural moment.
You meet a guy outside at one point who is explicitly part of what he calls the Anti-Alian League.
Natalie's eyes just weren't wide.
Do you miss this guy?
I think I missed this guy.
He's like, I tried to talk to it.
to anyone who had a name.
Yeah, he's like, he's on a corner somewhere.
He's right outside the elevator.
He's right outside of the elevator.
Does he have a name or is he like Taras Citizen?
He is a name.
Okay.
But there's like three dudes.
They look like crowded.
I didn't go anywhere near the elevator because I was just afraid of triggering.
No, you're allowed to.
Yeah, okay, I got you.
That makes sense.
Yeah.
This is stuff.
The other thing again is like you'll come back to Upper Terrace.
You can still do all the Upper Terrace stuff.
Like it doesn't go away until we like, you know, basically you have, you have some time.
This part is interesting because it's like you get.
You get this sense that terrorists has this like history of like both class and racial segregation happening where it's like undercity is for underclasses. That's all aliens and the pores. Yep. Yep. And then upper city is for the wealthy and the bourgeoisie. Yep. But even before this war starts, you get the kind of impression that was getting really porous. The social order was already kind of breaking down. It wasn't like this is why even before the Sith get there, this apartment building is starting to fill up with aliens to a degree. The
can't rent out, like the, the upper city is starting to, like, wither a little bit.
Right. But you meet this preacher.
Gorton Culloo is his name.
Gordon is very funny.
He's really excited because he sees in the SIF, there's kind of two things.
He sees, like, a chance for grand renewal.
The Siff are coming in.
They're like, yeah, yeah, well, honor your traditions, whatever.
Like, we'll, you know, we'll keep the laws as they are.
Which is great for him because, like, nobody's enforcing those, like, hierarchical laws.
anymore, maybe the Sith will.
But he's really excited because now he wants to move beyond the, the tradition of just
like, yeah, we're stratified, class segregated society.
And he's moving into an evil walks among us.
Yeah.
You want to know what evil I'm talking about, friend?
The alien.
And so he wants to move straight into like eliminationism, basically.
And he's seeing the Sith as a vessel for that, that just the mere presence of aliens
indicates that they are a fallen society and they are bringing, uh, they are bringing, uh, like
ills on, on Theresian society. So he's, he's trying to get this like, he wants to bring,
he wants to like create a militant, uh, wing of that like, you know, segregationist view. So basically
this guy's like restarting the clan, effectively. Uh-huh. Uh, it's like Jim Crow still exists,
but it's kind of like no one really gives the same degree of a shit. Like Jim Crow was turned into,
what illegal immigration stratification is turned into where like the laws are on the books,
but they are not being strictly enforced because nobody really wants to enforce them.
And he's like, no, let's move back to the campaigns of like racial terror.
Yes.
And like in some ways, this is very straightforward.
And I mean, this is the thing about the light side, dark side stuff in this game is it's a lot of save the puppy, kick the puppy.
You know what I mean?
I save the cat, you know, kick the dog.
Like that is the thing that is happening here.
But at the same time, coming off of the most recent Star Wars stuff that we've had, the idea that, like, the first place you go to in this game is heavy on the, you know, second-class citizens being alien stuff, thinking about that in relation to, like, the Republic let this happen.
Before the Sith got here, the Republic was fine with terrorists holding these laws.
Nothing about this place was illegal in the old Republic, you know?
The Sith have just showed up and are like, yeah, we're going to make it more like how it was.
older in the Republic, you know? And one of the people we learn, who does not like the Sith
being here, besides the aliens, presumably, is Davik, the crime lord, who I think I first heard
the mention of in that first apartment complex because you run into some people like Dia.
Shout out to Dia. Didn't expect you to show up. I wanted to ask how much time people spent
breaking into apartments. Everyone. Oh, every apartment. Every apartment. I went back later because
I was like, there's got to be some way to beat this fucking two fingers guy.
So I start like looting every apartment.
That didn't prove to be the answer.
But yeah, there's lots of people who are like, you feel bad when you open a door and it's like, please don't kill me.
Take whatever you want.
And I'm like, I'm not here to loot.
But then there are a lot of people who are like, I'm a character.
I have a name.
Here's my story.
Let me tell you something, Rob.
I am here to loot.
I am here to open your house up and go get your.
Are you dark signing?
No.
12 credits.
You don't, you do not.
You don't need to be dark-sighted to be resourceful.
The game doesn't give a shit, my friend.
There's a Twilight woman who's like terrified.
You come through the door and she's like, please don't hurt me.
Yeah, dog.
He didn't hurt her.
Team credits and her grenade or whatever, her med pack.
That's yours.
Oh, wait, she's got a grenade?
Oh, I'm sorry.
She has a med-pack.
Don't mind if I do.
Ma'am, these are very dangerous.
These are not personal defense weapons, except for me.
Except for you.
I have a very high explosive skill.
That's right.
Listen, there's a new landlord in town.
I got the gift of gab, not the gift to stab.
Yeah, you could loot all that shit.
The dark side stuff would be, when you open the door and you meet Dia, and Dia is like,
oh, no, you've come to get my bounty.
If you're like, yes, I have, that is darksided.
And if you're like, don't worry, I'm going to save you.
I'm going to find Davick and tell him you can't hurt you or whatever.
That's light side.
Or that will be lightsided if you finish that quest line.
I have been resolutely like, damn, that sucks.
Good luck.
That's probably the right call.
if you're going to go, I mean, if you're going to go darksided,
I'm like, this is truly the fucked thing with this game.
It's like Mass Effective 1 in this way.
If you're going to go a direction, go the direction.
You have to full commit.
Full commit.
There's not really a cost to going full one way or the other,
whereas I think there is kind of a cost for kind of middling it.
But it's the first time you're through.
Play the game you want to play.
You know?
Allie, you seemed like you had a thought on that.
Yeah, I'm such a baby with this game to the point that,
Like, when I first played it and then, like, red facts afterwards about the darksided choices that you could make, I was like, oh, my God.
How did you do that?
There is some stuff in this game.
The darksided shit is darksided.
It is like, it is goofy evil.
Like, it is not, they did not get to, hey, it's kind of interesting how the, there's no, the dark side to make some points in this game.
The dark side is a full corruption.
It is, it is.
there's no like oh but the dark side can protect people you know because they're willing to do what it takes no uh-uh the dark side is evil in this game so I'm not saying don't do it I'm saying it would be fun if one of us did but I would love to know if that's going to happen I nominate Rob oh but doaps man of the people dude's is a man of the people well you see though because okay so here's the thing like
When you find that dude, so Dia's story I have sympathy with, right?
She was being like sexually harassed or assaulted.
She pulled a knife.
She carved a guy's face up.
And he was like, well, that's not allowed to happen.
And he put a contract out on her because he's a dad of a henchman.
And so I did tell her, I'm like, I might be able to straighten this out.
Let me see what I can do.
But when I met the dude who was being held up to like pay off the loan shark and everything, like I intervened because they were just about to kill him.
And Carth was like, are we seriously going to let this happen?
And I was like, hey, dudes, like, you know, leave that guy alone.
They were like, we'll kill you.
And I was like, I've got a grenade.
Kill them.
But also, like, the dude took out a loan from a loan shark.
And then they were like, you owe us money.
And he's like, oh, no.
And people told him, don't take out a loan from a loan shark.
So to an extent, I'm like, look, I just killed two mercenaries who like, frankly, they're doing their jobs too.
It's 100 credits, my man.
It was $200, and I noticed I gave from the $200 from my dueling winnings.
Really?
You're a good guy.
That's weird.
That will, I'll go ahead.
There's $100 on the floor afterwards, right?
Like, you kill them and you just get that money back.
You just get that money back.
That's true.
Yeah.
Sorry, if you killed them, what he says is like, thanks, but that doesn't actually save me
because the guy, I still hide on the money.
I had a sick stealth field generator by then, and so I didn't have the money.
for him. I was like, I would love to help you. But I need to be stealthy. Yeah. So,
um, I will say that there are moments in this game that make you want to go dark side eventually.
Uh, and so we play by ear for now, maybe. And then you'll, you can make a decision later.
I think that there's enough stuff that you don't have to like mainline a direction at this point.
Um, uh, uh, uh, uh, the first time through I very much was playing down the line for most of the game. And then I
hit a point where I was like, you know what, it's dark side time.
And Carts got me wondering.
Oh, yeah.
What's Carth got you wondering?
Because we didn't finish talking about Carth, because you can talk.
So, okay.
So every, like, this feels almost like, I was wondering if something misfiring for me.
Because the minute you leave the apartment, every 30 steps on the street,
Carth has another thought.
So I only got, maybe talk to Carth.
I've only gotten one of those after leaving, but I have heard other people say that it just
triggers not stop.
Maybe it's because I got all that charisma.
Oh, it might be.
It's just like, I want to open up to you.
Which happens like, literally might have been there.
Where it's like, I don't even know you that while.
And someone's like, I must tell you my deepest feelings and secrets.
I'm like, sure, okay, go for it.
I wish Carth would not.
First of all, because it's very funny watching Carth a moat because his blasters are grafted to his hands.
So you got like a bit of Edward Blaster hands happening as he's like telling you a sad story.
And he's gesturing with two big old like blast tech blasters like grafted onto his hands is very goofy.
but he starts out by telling you like he has a dark past he doesn't like to talk about it but maybe
he does he does and he's just a republic pilot and all that but uh you know he didn't really want to
get too involved the war but then the sith came and like fucked up his planet and he couldn't
he couldn't help them and your character's like sounds like you blame yourself which is weird
because he doesn't sound like that but your character thinks he does and so he's like no
I just I didn't like how powerless it all felt all right let's leave it there
five steps down the street carth is like hey why you talk a bit about yourself you know yeah
not much to tell he's like okay but you know what's weird is that you were on that ship to begin
with uh-huh and that you're here now and I was like what are we getting at he's like well
you were added the passenger manifest at the last second that never happens shit doesn't even
have passengers bastel added you right yeah Bastille is you're part of Bastille as like
garage basically were cargo for her and then he was like and isn't it weird that like nobody else made
it off that chip you did i did bastella probably did but why are you like why are you here of all
the people aboard the ship why why did you make it out and then i think it was a separate conversation
like a little while later he's like and he was something else why couldn't bastola win that fight
why did the sit just roll us that easily you can ask him that the tower yeah he brushes it off but
when he comes back with actually you know now thinking about it it is weird that we just got
her asses kicked that usually doesn't happen basil it was there she's built twin fights like
this and how'd they even find us how are they posted up and waiting and just like ready to
overrun our ship at the drop of a hat and then you think about because now it's you know i'm not
playing this in 2000 what year was it three 2003 okay yeah so we live you know we've had a golden age
of twist endings come up and now like we live in a post inception world which poses the question of like do you ever notice you can never remember the start of a dream and your character just wakes up in a med bay or something in the middle of that fight yeah and cart's like this is all very weird and now I'm like it is very weird it is what are they hired bro yeah but then the meantime I'm like Carth you can chill out a little bit and he's like nope don't trust you that's my
thing, by the way. This is my character trait. I don't trust people. The fact that he puts
that on you, Carth, calm down. I don't know shit. I am an explorer. I just got here. I just got
here. I'm sorry that whatever happened on your planet happened to your planet. That shit wasn't
me. You know, put that on someone else. Also, it's a war. Yeah, it's bigger than you, bigger than
about bigger than me like chill. Hey, I have a question because I just, I'm looking at the
carth dialogue because I have all the dialogue on this one, FAQ thing I'm looking at. Does he really
say I'm all ears beautiful if you're a female character? When you talk to him, he really does.
And you can say I like the sound of that. Yeah. I chose the option that was like,
um, like don't talk to me like that or it sounds like you're not serious. And he was like,
well, I, yeah, I don't want to talk about this. Even though,
the conversation was initiated by it being like,
Karth wants to talk about something.
It does pop up and say.
I hate this man.
I hate him so much.
The thing about him, go ahead.
I'm glad that Rob is having this experience because I've only had one conversation with him so
far, but I know the last time that I played this game,
I literally, I walked out of the apartment building.
Carth wants to talk to you.
I walked to that little store.
I didn't get past the store and he already wanted to talk to me again.
I was like, man, we would just have this whole 20-minute conversation back in the apartments.
We couldn't go over this then.
But, yeah, I think it's also really tough because he's the first MPC, so he has to introduce all of these ideas of like, isn't that weird that that happened?
But it's also post him having to be a tutorial.
Yeah.
So the, like, mood change feels really, like, shallow and annoying.
Yeah.
also he's fundamentally
like the archetype he is
is guy who pilots and shoots guns
and that means he's a Han Solo
but he's not a Han Solo
do you know what I mean? He is like the Han Solo
class but he has none of Han Solo's class
you know what I mean like he's missing
that and like I'm just going to make a comparison
to you all the time to someone who's better than you
and that's a shame
he never wants to talk to me I'm confused
He's never asked to speak to me ever once.
Is there, what's your charisma?
My charisma is, da-da-da-da-da, 14, plus two.
That's more than mine.
I still got these comments.
Yeah.
You should try just talking to him out in the street because you may have said someone
wants to talk to you and you may just have looked away at that moment.
You know what I mean?
Oh, that's possible.
It's not like he gets an icon above his head that says, please talk to me.
You know, it literally just pops up a thing that says,
someone wants, in the party wants to talk to you.
He's so much.
All he wants to tell me is that the rich live on top
and the poor live on bottom,
and that's stars, baby.
Okay, weird.
That's all he wants to say to me.
He feels like a character that we played by Bill Paxton.
He does have that energy.
I like him more than maybe is the thing.
I, I, 100% would.
Sorry, nope, I am wrong.
I think I confused
them all the time. Bill Pullman. Yeah.
Bill Pax and I would like him
way more, but this feels like a Bill Pullman-ass
character. Yeah. Where it's like
because Bill Pullman had that arc where he was
like, they were trying him out as
a reliable male lead who wouldn't
like take any of the shine away from the
bigger female star he was paired with.
And so this
kind of feels like it's him
basically, right? This is the character in Independence Day.
It used to be a fighter pilot.
Well, now he is the fighter pilot, but he's
also still kind of this like corny dude. Yeah. And he's like, I got a dark side. And it's like,
no, this is not a dark side, my friend. He's got a sad side. Yeah. You know what I mean?
Does Carth have a secret? Yes, it's that he cries himself to sleep at night. I'm like,
that's, and he's not that secret. It's not that secret. I can hear you. We sleep in the same
apartment. And it's the, someone who tells you like, I don't trust people. I'm never going to get hurt again.
Someone just out there telling you that is like, sorry, no, you were actually the most social animal I've ever met.
Like you desperately want connection.
Yeah.
Which then makes the whole idea of investing in you less interesting.
You know, Baldersgate 3 is full of characters who are like, no, seriously, don't touch me.
Don't talk to me.
Yeah, leave me the fuck alone.
And now you're like, oh, but you seem kind of cool now.
And when they do open up, even though they're all programmed to open up at the drop of a dime, they all play better.
at being like, I'm hard to get to know.
They're not, but it always feels like, oh, like the shell is cracking open.
It's sort of fun each time.
This guy's like, oh, I hate opening my shell.
Oh, don't make me open my shell.
Okay, I'll tell you this.
Big psychological scars.
I'm so, I am so complicated and interesting.
I'm more than these two blasters welded to my hands.
I also, the way that it triggers is like, so it's not like a cutscene, but it's like you'll just be walking around.
you'll be trying to do a video game task
and then the screen will change
and it'll be like, it looks like Carth
wants to talk to you. And it really gives
this feeling of he's just like
sulking behind you like
kicking over a rock
and like just like
and it's just not it.
Too sabbital. It was just
talk to me. I forgot about his little
hair nodules. The two little things
they animated that like brush across
his forehead. It's so funny. I love
it. We'll get new people in the party soon, which is exciting. IMO. Anyway, my point being,
the one of the things we learn is that Davik, the crime lord, who we learn about via dialogue
with other people, does not like the Sith being here because they're blowing up a spot.
They're making it harder to do crime. You can't get anything off world because terrorists
is under quarantine and blockade. And the only way you can get out is with a Sith
chip or on Sith business. You learn from the ups and the ups.
Stairs, the, what are you called, the, like, arms dealer, the weapon and armor shop lady, the weapon and armor shop lady, that, like, he takes a cut from her.
You learn that he has all these bounties out on people, like, things go through him, you know?
Like, that bounty work goes through Davick here on Terrace.
And you learned, did you all go to the clinic, the medical clinic?
Yes.
Across from the, you learn that he wants, you talk to the guy about the Rackool virus, which is weird, right?
Because, like, we've never seen something like the rackwell virus in Star Wars, have we?
I don't think so.
Or it's like, oh, yeah, it's basically zombies.
It's basically if you get bit by or killed by a racquel, you'll come back as a racquel, which is, which you don't know what they look like.
It's the never went like a night's plague.
It is the never went a night's plague, which they had just done like three years before this.
There's one point where you're like walking around outside and is there someone just yelling there, that there's a plague.
They're like, the plague is on us.
No.
Or is that?
That's the street preacher.
That's the street preacher.
Natalie talked to, like, he's speaking about metaphorical plague.
He's talking about aliens.
That's the guy.
That's the racist.
That's the racist.
That's the racist.
That's how they get you, Natalie.
You're like, no, I'm, I'm health conscious.
I want to know about this play.
What's a question should we take?
You get the aliens out of here.
Oh, wow.
Shit, should we?
When you go talk to that guy, your options, like, oh, do you mean the rackules?
Oh, do you mean the Sith?
And what he means is, no, I mean the aliens.
I mean the aliens is what I mean.
That's wild.
It's wild.
Anyway, yeah, you go to the clinic, you learn from the guy there.
Hey, there's, there's, the rackwell shit is going, is going on.
But I hear the Republic almost had a cure right before the Sith occupied.
And could you get me some of that, please?
I could like, I could like synthesize it and cure everybody and it wouldn't that be good?
What's up?
He's specifically like, I should really love this mission because you're like, hey, let me go get you some.
And he's like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
I didn't ask you to get me any way.
I was just talking to you.
Yes.
I didn't realize you were a protagonist.
Okay, let's not do this.
Because he's like, no, he, for me, he was, he explicitly, I was like, what's in it for me?
And he was like, well, I'm, I'm just a lowly medic.
I barely have the supplies to keep this place running.
But, you know, it would be a good deed or whatever if you did that.
And then as soon as you are leaving, the guy by the door stops you and is like, hey,
heard you talking about serums.
My boss, Davick, my low-key boss, my other boss, my boss on the side.
Yeah, like, dude, you already work here.
What are you doing?
Yeah, I, like, walked in and tried to talk to him, and he was like, fuck off.
And I was like, okay.
And then I went and talked to the other guy.
And then as I'm leaving, he's like, oh, I heard you talking about serums.
If you give that to me, I'll make it worth your while.
I'll pay you way more than other medic guy is going to pay you.
And you're like, isn't that, don't you want to, like, help people?
And he's like, hey, just making some money here.
I'm like, all right.
People should be worth a little something.
I'm not in disagreement with that.
You can't eat goodwill.
Damn.
Damn.
Did you all open the back door?
No.
No.
It's like, it's secure.
lab area, right? Sure is. You can open
that door up. It's an employee only. I'm not an employee.
Yeah, but I don't live in those apartments I opened up either, did I?
I thought I couldn't open it with them in the room.
You absolutely can, and he will freak out. He'll be like, what are you doing? And then
you can see what he's doing. So what's back there?
Wrecked. Two Republic soldiers in Colto tanks that he found, because he is
secretly anti-Syth, not that secretly, and he's trying to nurse them back to health.
And he's just trying to do a good thing.
Quilto tank
Yeah
Bacta doesn't exist yet
Rob
So we're at we're
There's no
There's no Sabaq or Bacta
So instead we have
Pazak and Koto
Koto
is a less
A less refined version of Bacta
That's all you gotta know
It's different
You know
Don't worry
Col 45
To Bacta's morphine
Right exactly
You still dump the whole person in there though
They're like in the tank
you know, they have that whole thing going on.
Then you don't get anything from this, right?
You just get to be like, whoa, wait a second.
And you can kind of be, it's kind of like, okay, we can like, you can trust this guy
because he is, he is trying to help people for real, for real, you know.
The thing Rob was talking about before is if you say, I feel the exact phrasing for it,
but if you're like, all right, we'll go get you the serum.
That's when he ends up, when you're like really loud about it, he will be like,
whoa, you're going to get me in trouble.
I did not make any particular requests of you.
Because otherwise he's afraid of getting, you know, busted.
And this is why he's actually...
Now, across from him.
Droid's by Janus.
I love Janus.
Janice, what the fuck?
What's up?
What's wrong with Janus?
You got to...
You got to...
You got to...
fucking test your droids before you're selling them.
You know what?
I will say about Janice, though, is she's a...
a rare person with integrity
on this godforsaken planet
because I purchased a droid from her
I was so excited I was like
we get a droid in this game
we get to have a little guy with us
like a little guy is gonna be walking around with us
and it's gonna be so fun
and I can mod him and he's gonna be like
he's gonna be like my little friends
like droid parts and stuff
yeah she's selling all kinds of stuff
I was like oh damn
and she was like well I have two droids for sale
I have one that's for sale and one that's definitely not for sale at all in his elite, super extreme, like, awesome epic droid, and that one's not for sale.
But I have another droid for sale for 50 credits.
Which is dirt cheap, by the way.
That was what I was like, huh?
That's what the clue.
But she said she refurned it herself.
She did say that.
You've done to say 50 credits.
If you haven't played this game, 50 credits, like, is true.
nothing. I don't think there's a one dollar that is like I haven't seen anything of
increment lower than when you yes when you lay the place you begin in the apartment building
the illegal apartment building where the squatters are the guy that you could talk to there I don't
think sells a single fucking thing for 50 credits yeah a med pack one med pack these are
consumable is 44 credits from him so which by the way I thought that was expensive I was like
damn everything costs a lot of money on this a lot of credits well it does that's my point
being it costs 44 for one med pack
you're gonna tell me the whole ass
droid it's a whole person
is only six credits more than the
med pack that's nothing a lot of people don't
realize the the treasure
they got you know
who am I to complain
if something's undervalued
but clearly it was not
undervalued because
I purchased said droid
and I was so excited
I was walking out
into a new
world, me and my bud.
The other guy
was irrelevant to me. All that
mattered was
Tarth, Marth, Barth? I don't
I don't know. I don't know that, man.
All I know is me and my droid.
And as soon as my little featsies
exited the
store, my droid exploded.
It's as soon. It's like...
Immediate cutscene
droid implosion.
And I was like, fuck.
And I walked back in and I was like, Janice, what's going on here?
And she was like, oh, I swear, I thought I had replaced the capitolapater.
And I'm so sorry.
And you can like threaten her.
And I was like, you know, I think I don't remember.
She gave me my money back at the end of the day.
And she was like, thank you so much for like supporting small businesses.
Did you persuade her to try to get more?
No, I was like, just give me, just give me what you owe me, you know?
You can, there's a specific persuade threat option or just a regular persuade.
The regular persuade is something like, you know, I think my time is worth a little something too, don't you?
Yeah.
And if you do that, she'll give you an extra 25 credits.
So I left there over profit.
I'm not going to, okay, you shook her for, you're actually.
Let me tell you something.
No dark side points.
Morally neutral.
Morally neutral, baby.
Listen, and listen, because listen, that extra 25, do you know where that goes?
That goes to the authority on front.
To half a med pack?
The half a med pack I need to go fight Darth Malik.
That goes to the authoritarian outside.
Who owes Davick 200?
I'm moving money around.
I'm solving problems.
You know what I mean?
I'm mowing the same $20.
That's what I'm saying.
I'm taking it from Jannet, droids by Janus to give it by a thorian guy who's about to
his head blown off.
I just walked away from that.
You're just filtering it into Davk's pocket.
That's fine.
You're taking money from Janice that she could reinvest into her business to fix
her joints.
Yeah, well, well, maybe that Notorian guy could go, you know, once he's out from under Davick.
She's struck people don't go there because, because they want her to be a dancer.
That's all she has.
She's living her dream.
She's a twilight, right?
That's the thing.
Yeah, she's like, she's facing adversity.
Well, she is, yeah, she's like, everyone, everyone just thinks, oh, you must be a dancer.
And I'm not.
I'm a droid dealer.
Uh-huh.
And I just like hanging out my shop with my droids.
And I don't want to be a dancer.
I'm not a dancer.
I'm not much for the people.
And that's great.
The one thing is, though, is she a preferred service center for any droid in the galaxy?
Because, like, that droid exploding at the threshold is not a good.
good it seems like the good droid it's just factoring new and so I'm kind of like
what service is provided here give her time give her time we'll come back don't
leave the put the Yelp review down and allow her to just develop her business it's not always
going to be easy I can't but we're not about to call the better business bureau on her three
stars is not a negative review it is not okay three is like look it they're fine three is a negative
review in the world that we live in if you have less than five stars as a rating on anything
I'm doubting you hardcore well there's people who have good businesses who deserve those five
stars I'm sure that look if there were a second droid place that's like and I repair droids
and they stay repaired that place gets five stars it devalues through what they do if we're just like
Janice gets five stars too.
You're going to get the Janus response on your review, Rob.
You're going to get the like, we're so sorry that you couldn't, you didn't have a great time.
We'd love to work with you to make sure that.
Please contact us.
Please contact us.
Yeah.
Uh-huh.
It's tough.
20% off your next droid purchase.
There you go.
There you go.
And again, we will be back to Janus.
Janus will work with you.
I'm going to find who has that pre-order.
Uh-huh.
I'm gonna get them on T3
I'm gonna get them
Yeah
I thought like
Is it darksided to kill someone
Because you want their pre-ordered
Droid
Oh my God
Cool Droid dropped
Sorry I just had to kill this person
You're at the Game Stop
On release night
Like uh
This is a different
This pre-orders on a different name
Don't worry about it
I got I bought it from him
I'm picking up for him
Yeah
God
Other stuff around here
Pazok
It sounds like y'all have some Pazok
Negative feelings
Joe lose money on Pazok
I lost money on Pazok
I didn't understand it
I didn't understand what it meant to hold
Am I getting Delta card every time?
It's black yes it's black
You know how to play blackjack?
Yes
Okay
In Pazac your goal is to get to 20 total points
Yeah
Every round you get Delta card
And then you have an opportunity
to play one of your four cards.
And you only have those four cards.
For the entire match.
Okay, so whatever you get...
Because when I first played,
I got dealt four plus cards.
I didn't have any minus cards.
You only have plus cards right now.
You don't have any minus cards right now.
When you get that guy's deck,
it's two plus ones, two plus twas, two plus twas,
two plus threes, and two plus fours,
or something like that, right?
I see.
And maybe two plus five.
So I think it's all that.
Eventually, you'll get to build your deck
because you're going to get Pazok cards
from other people.
people. You might even get some on terrace somewhere. Um, and so you, you will eventually be like,
ooh, I want a minus five just in case I fuck up and go over. You know what I mean? Yeah, I was,
I was looking for that. Because that's the guy you, you play in there is really good. And he has a
minus five. And he'll fuck you on that. Like that'll be over for you. Um, uh, but otherwise it's
blackjack. So you can play one, you get a card and you can play one card. And then goes the other
person, they can get a card and play one card. And you're going to see it's a 20 or is the closest to
20 without going over, you know.
So once you hit 20.
Done.
You automatically, it automatically stops if you hit 20.
I see.
Okay.
Okay.
Yes.
The way I think about Pizak is I want to make them play their cards.
I want them to play their cards.
I want to keep a card advantage is how I think about it.
I don't want to play.
If I'm at 8, I'm not going to play a fucking card.
Why am I going to play a card at 8 unless I have a plus 12 card?
If I can't make Pizak, which is 20, I'm not playing cards.
I'm not playing card to get to 19.
I'm not playing a card to get to 20.
You know what I mean?
I'm playing a card to get to 20.
Otherwise, I'm not touching my side deck.
I'm just giving me another one, you know?
That makes a lot of sense.
Once I get some of those cards, they're floating out there in the world, like the negative cards.
That's what I'm saying.
And so they go up to like 19, and they're like, I'm going to stand.
And then I'm going to be like, well, I'm just going to set my clock back.
So now we're both going to have to hit.
Yep.
Now what are you going to do?
Rob, can I tell you something?
They got all sorts of pizzoc cards out there in this world.
they got stuff that's more than just
oh it gives you plus two or minus two
they got shit that makes moves
there's some there's some you get to win the sets
there's flip cards that do both
there are flip cards that do both you've seen these
I've heard about these
they're out there
they're out there
this is like it's a real
basic hand you're real basic
deck you've got to start but I can see
myself getting bit by the little
by the Zach bug
yeah uh huh that's right
any other side stuff up here
I guess not really right
talked about the party
y'all didn't go to
did anybody else also get scammed by the guy
who would the lead to the band
and I was also like
why did I let myself get caught up in this
I don't give a shit about this band
excuse me you did what I wanted to talk to
when you walk into the canteen
there's a guy who's like
hey I'm with the band
you want to meet them
and I was like
yeah I want to meet the band
And he was like, okay, you can meet the band for 20 credits.
And I was like.
To have this conversation, I've just confirmed.
He won't do this with guys.
Wow.
So he's scamming women.
He's scamming women.
What?
Uh-huh.
Because he thinks what, that we just want to meet bands?
Literally want one thing.
Meet the band.
Meet the band.
What happens?
Yeah.
Go ahead.
All right.
Yeah.
Yeah, he, he's like, okay, I got to go.
And he runs out of the cantina with your $20.
And then some other lady runs up to you and is like, was that so-and-so?
Oh, Jirgin.
His name is Jirgin, which was my first clue that he was no good.
Was that Jurgen?
And you're like, yeah, he knows the band or whatever.
And she's like, last week, he told me, he took 20 credits from me and said that he could,
he'd let me talk to the band.
And then he stole my money.
And that's as far as I've gotten so far
Because I haven't found him again
Yeah I went looking for him
I couldn't find him again
He took my money
And I didn't get to meet the band
They were too busy to talk to me
I went up to them
I was like hello
Like everyone tells you the band
It's one of the hottest
They're a hot jazz band
And they came for a brief gig
At this can'tina
And then the Sith occupied the planet
They're stuck here
And so they're just stuck there
It's like being
It's being like on a jazz tour
In Paris in 1940
where it's just like oh shit
I guess we just live here now
I would just go I would be living
at the canteena with them
I'd just be
living it up in
most people wouldn't do an all clarinet
quartet but we do
that's jizz baby
I just really quick again
you can't look up anything
because again I went to Juergen's
Wikipedia page
instant huge spoiler
please truly
please truly you cannot
I'm not looking anything up
don't worry please thank you
no hard feelings my good man but i can't really talk with you right now it's difficult enough
to draw the interest of the ladies and the establishment as it is it's that guy yes i hate that dude
yeah uh-huh you were like someone who knows about lonely nights and i'm like yes because i woke up
with no context or past aboard a starship yeah alie i've showed you i've sent you the thing
uh from this that's like very high up on this thing that's just like what are you doing
Okay. Yeah. I understand the way that this is. Yeah. Okay. Um, don't do that. Hey, everybody editing the
Wikipedia articles for every single Kotar character. You know, there's a problem here. All right.
Yeah. Other bar stuff. Was there anything else? Oh, the duels. So Rob, we heard your duels. Okay, but,
actually, wait, before we get this, the duels. No, because I'm curious is the, is the, is the
Theresean noble
agendered thing
because that guy brushed me off.
He brushed you off.
What's he,
what's he say?
Well, his label is
Theresian noble.
And then you talk to him and he's like,
don't you see that I'm rich?
Don't talk to me.
I can't talk to you.
He told me the same thing.
He told me the same thing.
Yeah, okay.
Yeah, it wouldn't be proper of a man of my standing
to talk to you.
Yeah, okay.
Yes.
Yeah, I got the same shit.
I got the same shit.
I'm trying to think there's that.
I think the gender,
The gendered thing might be the party.
Sarna, the party person, I think, is that one.
I know, I guess women get Yun Genda, a different off-duty.
Yeah.
Yeah, I only talked to her.
I didn't find Yun, so I did the shooty thing to get my armor.
Gotcha.
Yeah.
I, I, Yun has a thing for me.
That will be, that's the thing you should go do.
You should go do the Yune.
And I'm standing in front of it right now.
I'm just waiting to do it.
You just open the door.
Okay, I'll see it live.
I'm going to do it live.
Here it is.
I mean, unless it's wildly different than what happens.
You made it.
I was beginning to wonder if you were going to show.
You have to try this to a reason in ale.
It's fantastic.
We should have conquered this planet ages ago.
Careful, Yun, that wine's got quite the kick.
A couple more bottles and we'll all be passed out on the floor.
Who cares?
We're not on duty tomorrow.
Let's live a little.
Come on.
Drink up.
Fades to black
Man
The Sith used to be cool
And everyone is
On the floor passed out
They can't fucking hold it like you can
You know what I mean
They can't handle their drinks
Tana can drink
Every single one of these fools
Under the fucking table
Under the table
Absolutely
And I'm just gonna
Oh yeah I got some
I got some Sith armor
Got 300 experience points for that
See? See?
I can't rob
anyone on the floor. I know it sucks.
Which is a tragedy.
I want to close that door and just like,
you know what? Five less Sith officers.
They have to deal with that.
Honestly, yeah. I should just be able to throw a frag in here
and close the door and leave. Right?
For real.
All right, yeah. Good job.
Yeah, okay. So now I've gone to the party.
Yeah, good job. You got to the beginning of this episode.
You had not been on the party. Now you've been at the party.
And I went to the party. And I had some
delicious ale. Yeah.
And I'm going to go continue on my day.
like a normal, well-adjusted adult
who can have a Turisian ale at noon
and then, you know, maybe I'll go back to two fingers.
And then I also lost the two fingers,
but I don't know why I lost.
I feel like I should have won.
You can just give another shot.
I think I just need another shot.
He's really tough.
Everyone says he was really good.
Yeah.
How far into the duels did you get, Allie?
How far up did you go?
I only did those.
too. Okay, you've not fought ice.
I have not fought ice, but I did talk
to the retired bounty hunter with the gold
armor. Oh, Bendax's
Star Killer. Yeah. Uh-huh.
Yeah. A little deep cut for you
Star Wars fans. Uh-huh.
You would explain that one? You want to...
Does this predate
Galen Star Killer? It must, right?
They're both referencing the same thing.
Oh, oh. Which is that it was
original, that Luke's original name
was Star Killer.
Oh.
You know, before the, that was the original Luke Star Killer before it was Skywalker.
So they're both more evil.
Yeah, it kind of is.
That's like a lot more evil.
The Death Star that, you know, like you got to be careful in that one.
Yeah.
But yeah, yeah, yeah, a Galen, Galen from Force Unleashed Star Killer also called that.
Bender's.
Star Killer Base also.
Yeah, see, they just keep going to the same fucking well.
Let us make a Star Wars thing
It's come
Bendeck's fun
Because he's like
I don't duel
I don't duel anymore
Because
You know
No one's man enough
To do death matches anymore
There's no joy in it for me
Fucking calm down hoey
Dules are pretty weak shit though
At this point
Yeah
That's because you're stuck on Girlin
Two fingers
Go out here
Fight Ice
Fight Morrow
Fight Twitch
they're out here
well there's no one could ever defeat them
because it takes
it takes
it takes so much to beat girlin
girl on that you can't even
you can't even fathom what it would take to be Twitch
I'm not that for much further than you all
which I beat ice I beat girl and I beat ice
I cannot beat Marl yet I have to come back to Marl after some levels
I think worth saying here because I know someone will write in about it
is you can try to
min-max this game. If you go on forms and shit, people are out here like, all right, so
we all know, no one should ever level up on terrace because when you press each class later
and you get your second class, those classes are better than these classes. Please, if you get
those emails or if people message you on Twitter about this, ignore them. No problem. Play the
fucking game. It's your first time through. Ignore that pressure to try to min-max. Just try to get through
the game. It's not, it's, it's, it's, eventually you get so powerful in this game, you will be
fine. You might have some hard fights here and there, but the bulk of it is pretty straightforward.
So, um, yeah, so you do some duels. We'll come back. We'll wrap up these duels later,
probably. Um, it's fun. You get announced as the announcer being like, the mysterious stranger.
And that's Star Wars. It's like very, like, announcer guy.
It is. Every guy is here. Every guy is, is, is in Cotor. Every guy is. You,
You don't even, just wait.
You're about to meet.
We're going to meet some more guys in this next one.
Can't wait.
Is that it?
Is that the, let me look at my notes.
I think that's it.
Should I bail out this?
So there's two guys who owe money.
There's the guy in the apartment who owes 200 credits.
And then there's the guy out on the street.
See, also really?
Maybe that's 100 outside?
Maybe that's why I'm confused.
Probably is you sell if you blasters, you can bail out everyone.
That's the thing.
Should I be selling blasters?
I have so many weapons.
You have so many weapons.
You don't eat them.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Okay.
The thing is that if you're doing melee stuff right now, the best melee thing that you have coming off of the endar spire is that prototype sword that you can put the little doo Hickey in.
You can put the vibrator circuit or whatever it is you can put in your back in the apartment.
Also, you can fast travel back to you.
This is something that I don't think they communicate well enough even if they put it in your quest lock.
You can fast travel back to your apartment from anywhere and then fast travel back to where you were.
Oh.
I did not need to run around that city
nearly as much as I did.
You do not need to.
You can fast travel back.
And then if you leave the apartment complex,
then you lose your ability to quick travel back.
But in the map screen,
there's like a fast,
just like a rapid transit button.
And then it says transit back.
And so you can just do that
to get to and from anywhere, basically.
Wow.
That's great.
To one place.
It's not like a fast,
it's like there's fast travel points
around the world or anything,
but it is just like you can go back
to get to a workbench or whatever, right?
You might even be able to sleep
and heal for free in your apartment?
You heal for free every time you travel to the hideout.
Okay, so there you go.
So, yeah, you can fast travel back for a free heel, which is a little O-Pee, you know.
That's great.
Loading time instead of spending a med pack.
Sure, why not?
Yeah.
Yeah, my notes here, my side stuff, notes, Pizak, duels, buying, droid, backroom of clinic,
rackool serum, robbing people's apartments.
Yeah, we hit all those.
Yeah, boring Han Solo, pilot and gun guy, doesn't trust you sad about Pax.
Malac and Rebbaugh were headstrong, went to fight the mandolians in the out of rim, something corrupted them out there, illegal aliens, anti-alien.
Corrin spotted.
Yeah, there's one in the, in the apartment complex.
In the alien apartments, yeah.
In my world, I'm a king, but here, he does say that, right? He does say that, right? That is what he says.
Yeah. Yeah, all right. Oh, I guess the last thing is we also learned that Davick is part of a group called the exchange, which is this era's
Galactic Crime Syndicate.
That's interesting, right?
There is a Galactic Crime Syndicate.
That's fun.
Cool.
All right, I think that's the first podcast.
So in a couple weeks,
people hear us play through the rest of terrorists.
We have a choice to make here.
We played very little for today,
and we still got two hours out of it, right?
Maybe we didn't.
I haven't looked at the actual recording in a second.
No, we put one pretty big.
Yeah, 1.45, right?
there are two
Charlie,
Ali and I talk to this.
In general,
there are,
you know,
there's a bunch of planets
in this game
and we think generally
speaking,
we'd like to do
two episodes per planet,
right?
Terrorist is like
a little longer
than most planets
because it's the big intro planet.
Ironically,
I remember hating terrorists,
but I think that's just
because I played through it
so many times as a kid
or whatever,
you know what I mean?
And also you're like,
you have an
blocked all your cool abilities yet and stuff.
But I'm having a good time with it.
We can either.
Go ahead, Allie.
I think the bottom level is very tedious.
I remember that at the time.
I do remember that.
But I don't remember if I'm right about it.
We have, in terms of zones, we have done South Apartments, Upper City South, Upper City
Cantina, Dool Ring, Upper City, North, North Apartments.
And that's like a third of what's on.
terrace. We have the lower city, which you've heard about already. We have, there's another
canteena down there. There's like some side stuff to do down there, like the upper city. Then
we also have the undercity, which includes some sewers and stuff. The thing that's kind of weird
is, the point that I thought we were going to stop at was like when you get, you finish the search
for Bastila, you find Bastila. That's kind of far into this. So we could stop earlier. We could
stop at, we could stop at under city. Do we have, Allie, do you remember if you get mission by
then, or do we need to go further to get mission? I, you run into mission basically.
It's in the lower city, right? Yeah, it's like once you get through that elevator and to that
first contina, you'll find her by then. Okay. And she'll join you or?
I think, well, I think she triggers a mission and then after that, yeah, because she's definitely
with you by the time you get to the third level. So you recruit her while you're still in the second
level block. I do have a 48 hour long, long play of this game that I can reference, which is
annoying, honestly. But I think that that's probably the thing to do then is do we do just the lower
city and then the final, but that doesn't feel like a lot of episode to me. I was so sure of
where these cuts were. And then I realized that the Bastila stuff is like, it's Bastila and
then kind of two dungeons. And then you're off this planet. You know what I mean?
I mean, I feel like y'all will probably move more quickly through, like, the, whatever the next
section is. So I feel like if you get to a point and you're, if you get to that point and you're
like this doesn't feel like enough then yeah could keep going until i think we got to get to
the lower city alley i think or the undercity i'm looking at gameplay and like yeah i'm looking here
and i think maybe we just call it maybe we just push a little harder and do do we want to do like
do like a soft check in like let's do a soft check club style like everybody get to the the under city
and see how we feel yeah i think that's a good idea everyone get to the under
city and see how we feel feels right and yeah and then we'll put a tweet out for the audience to say
what we're actually going to cover in the next episode totally my my a coast and yeah i think for me
that the two stopping potential stopping points are the getting to the under city or getting to bastila
you know so if you really want to play ahead a little bit and you're like oh let's go as far as
bastila we definitely won't go past that i think um it just starts to carve things up
weird.
We'd really like to do the planets as two episodes each, I think is the right call.
So, all right.
Cool.
Sounds like a plan.
I like Cotor so far.
Yeah.
Keep an eye on our social media accounts to see where we end up like making the cut,
but that's the plan for now.
If you just want to support the show, you can do so at patreon.com slash civilized.
And yeah, until next time, please, rate and review us on your podcast platform of choice.
And remember, apparently fighting is important in this.
game and you can't just talk your way through everything, including the gladiator pit.
Who knew? Not me.
I don't know.
I'm going to be.
We're going to be.
Thank you.
Thank you.
I don't know.
