A More Civilized Age: A Star Wars Podcast - Announcement: What's Next for AMCA

Hey everyone! As promised, we took some time to discuss and consider what we'll be doing for the next chunk of AMCA during the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. And we've reached a determination. As highly, overwhelmingly requested, we will be playing Knights of the Old Republic. Ali and I get into it a little on this short announcement episode, but we're both very excited for Rob and Natalie to play through this game that was so foundational for us as young Star Wars fans. Ali and I have basically plotted out the season, but we want to make sure that our estimation on episode/gameplay-segment length is right. So, for now: Episode 1 will cover from character creation through the upper level of Taris. Side content is fine to do, but don't go delving into the Lower City or Undercity quite yet! I almost said a more civilized age. I'm so tired. Nice of the old republic. The RPG by BioWare, which is available on PC, but runs kind of weird on PC. Also available on Xbox, on Switch. I think that, was that really a release everywhere? Like that most recent one? Oh, I, um... Or is it only on...

Ooh, that's a really good question. It's on PS5, it's on Switch, yeah. Okay. It's on iPads. It's on Android. It's on Linux. It's on iPad. Oh, I've known this. It's been on iPad for a little bit. Yeah. It's on OSX. You know, it's on Mac. It's everywhere. Download and play it. Now, it runs kind of weird on PC. Okay, sorry. Pause real quick. Hi. Hi. We're going to play nice of the old republic. That's what we're pivoting to. That was the overwhelming response. Like over, like an extra number in the digit like add up numbers two through ten and it's still not as much. Like truly there were some stuff that got like

27 votes. It didn't hang. You know what I mean? And you know, maybe one day we'll go to the 27 vote thing. That's all seem good. We got a bunch of really good suggestions that we will keep including non-Star Wars suggestions. But People, again, overwhelmingly wanted us to stay with Star Wars stuff, which I get is a Star Wars podcast. Y'all got other places to hear about Corosawa movies, I guess. I guess you all have another favorite Corosawa podcast. I guess we're not going to become that, I guess.

Weird, but okay. We're going to play Nights of the Old Republic. We're here today to announce that and also to announce what the first section of the game is. I also to again request that you be cool about it if you've already played. played it, by which I mean, don't, I don't think there's any streams, but if there's streams, don't backseat game, you know, don't send spoilers to anybody, don't be, you know. Yeah, let, let Rob and Natalie have a, a pure experience of this, like, 20-year-old game. This is 20-year-old this year. Wait, when did it drop? Are we doing it 20 years?

Yeah, July 15th, 2003, so we're a little late. That's okay. We had a busy summer. baby. Summer of Gautoy. That's right. So the summer starts now in August. We're going to talk about where to kick things off. I was going to say if you're going to play it on PC, the PC version runs in a square format, you know, like a square monitor format. I actually think it's better to just play it like that than try to go down the widescreen modding route, which I did. You can get it widescreen. You cannot get the UI elements on the non-paws screen, like, big enough to want to live. They're so small. They're so tiny. It's like playing like an Xbox 360 game on a non-hgd-TV, like, Dead Rising without an HDTV where you can't read anything. Do you

remember that era? Yeah. I remember that. You're big, you were a big Dead Rising person. I'm such a big Dead Rising guy. Dead Rising is so good. Can we just do a Dead Rising? I mean, come on. It's cinematic. It is cinematic. Capcom. Capcom took some swings. You know what I mean? In that era, they were really making some moves. Anyway, we are going to play. We're going to create characters in the first episode. We're going to go through the Endar Spire in the first episode. Classic.

Tutorial. Tutorial. Learning about, there's that guy there. Do you remember his name? This is a deep cut. Do you remember his name? I'm cheating because of how I played. Daven? It's not Daven.

Trask. Let's go. Yeah. So we're going to play through that. Create characters. Play through the Endar Spire, the whole thing. And then just dip our toes into Terrace. We're only going to play through the opening bits of Terrace, only the upper

city. We are not going to go to the lower city. We're not going to go past that in this first episode. Buy yourself a new gun if you want. Yeah. Go put some to the locals. Get yourself introduced at the arena if you want to. Wait, I think that's all downstairs stuff. It's not. No, the arena is into the little canteen. It's you go straight out the apartment and you go around the little corner. First there's the first on the right hand side, there's the weapon shop lady and then just past her is the canteena that's on the upper level i'm pretty sure but the the one where you like challenge people i think is downstairs is it is just pizzok upstairs i think so maybe you're right maybe the upper city canteen is just pizzok yeah you can't be doing no there's duels up

You know, I said this last time, but like, please bear with us as we need some flexibility to pivot to this. Also, it just takes more time, right? Like, we're talking to Rob about how much time we have for this stuff. And, like, even with slowing down and taking notes and looking stuff up for me afterwards for a TV show, you're still talking about three to five episodes of television. That's 21 minutes per episode, you know? That's not that much. What we just talked about

in terms of video games, if you've never played this game before, and also you've never played this him before and you're like, well, what's, how does this game work? What's a wisdom score? Like, truly, I know Baldur's Gate is big right now, but like, if you don't know what a feat is or what, when should I be using Flurry, you know, that's stuff that you're going to have to learn. And so we're like, you're thinking like, okay, what if you play six hours per episode or something like that. How much can we get done in that if it's the first time through? So it's going to think more time per episode for us, especially again, because you get people in here who are going to take notes anyway. So yeah, please be patient as we get it off the ground.

I'm really excited about it, I guess. Allie, what are you most excited about, Natalie and Rob discovering without getting into spoilers? I, okay, early chapter. I'm excited to talk. about Carth's ability to communicate. Carth's abilities generally how Carth is. Mm-hmm. Not like a special thing I've forgotten about Carth. No. I mean, you'll know what I mean.

Okay. I think we all know what I mean with regards to... To Carth Onassis. Yeah, with his ability to communicate. The most bi-aware guy of all time. The blueprint, really. The blueprint, really. Yeah.

Yeah. Yeah. And I'm a Caden guy. Like, I, you know. You're a Cate. You know what? Allie, can I admit something? And I know we're alienating people here. I'm a Caden guy. You know what? Thank you. I think Caden gets short shrift. I think people are annoyed by him. But he's been through a lot. He's been through a lot. And he's there with you. He has like the first generation of the biotic like implant. It's not the same. It's hard. You have to live through a harder situation. It's not his fault
