Shoshin is the Zen practice of “beginner’s mind,” inviting us to appr...oach our experiences with openness and curiosity, as though we were experiencing them for the very first time. Download the Free Shoshin Guide Here My question to you as you begin this meditation: what might change if you looked at your relationships, your work, or even the obstacles you face with fresh eyes? Sometimes, Shoshin is all we need to shift our perspective. Through this practice, you’ll explore what happens when you loosen your grip on what you think you already know, bringing a little more curiosity, excitement, and playfulness into the ordinary moments of your life. Starting point is 00:00:31 And as always, once the meditation begins, there will be no advertisements and no disruptions. Thank you so much for being here. And welcome to this guided meditation. During today's practice, we are going to explore the concept of Shoshin, or beginner's mind. Shoshin is the practice of approaching our experiences with openness. and curiosity, as though we are experiencing them for the very first time. As we move through life, we naturally become familiar with the world around us. And eventually we begin to experience much of our lives through what we already know.
Starting point is 00:01:45 But beginner's mind invites us to look again, to bring a little more curiosity, excitement, and even playfulness into the parts of our lives that may have started to feel ordinary or mundane. So all I ask of you during this practice is to release your expectations, release opinions, and allow your mind to open as if a beautiful lotus flower it's unfolding for the very first time inviting you to become a beginner again and to become curious about what you might notice when you loosen your grip on the assumption that what you already know is all there is to see so if you haven't already you may gently close your eyes and just begin by noticing your breath so many of our problems
Starting point is 00:03:36 practice begin by deepening the breath or controlling the breath. But can you just notice the breath? Noticing the beginning of the inhale, the middle of the inhale, the inhale. Can you notice the pause in between the inhale and the exhale, seeing the beginning of the exhale, the tail end of the exhale? Can you notice what you hear without searching for a particular? sound, just allow the sounds around you to come into your awareness and as you listen notice how quickly your mind wants to identify what you're hearing. I might want to label it. Instead,
Starting point is 00:05:31 can you practice experiencing the sound before you name it? What does it actually sound like? If you could assign a texture to the sound, what would it feel like? A dead, depth or shallowness to the sound, could you assign a color to the sound? Or a shape? Just exploring the audible environment around you. Opening your mind from one sound to another. Approaching each one with the same curiosity. Notice from your right ear to your left ear, listening as though you've never heard it before. begin to drop your awareness into your body and see if you can locate just one physical sensation
Starting point is 00:07:58 that you can feel right now and before you decide what that sensation is become curious about how it actually feels noticing its quality its breath noticing whether it changes once you pay attention to it there is so much happening within our experience before our mind ever gives it a name. So go ahead and see what you notice when you allow yourself to simply experience it. Now your eyes to ever so softly open as if you are seeing the world for the very first time. Allow your gaze to fall naturally somewhere in the space around you and imagine that you've never seen what you're looking at before noticing color and shapes noticing any light or shadows or movement
Starting point is 00:10:11 and slowly allowing your eyes to wander across any of the surfaces in front of you can you look at something familiar without immediately allowing everything you already know about it to take over the experience? What do you notice when you simply look, meeting what is already here, through the lens of curiosity, allowing yourself to see beyond what you expect to see? And for the next few moments, I invite you to take this beginner's mind and apply it to whatever feels relevant to you right now. Maybe it's the beginning of a new season or the curiosity of what a new chapter could bring for you. Perhaps there's an old situation in your life that you've looked at the same way for a very long time. We've all been there. Maybe the thoughts and perceptions that you've had
Starting point is 00:12:07 on yourself, on your worth, on your capabilities, on what's possible for you. Maybe you're something else comes to mind entirely but whatever feels relevant and real to you bring it into your awareness gently and lovingly and just see what happens when you loosen your grip on the assumption that you already know all there is to see knowing yourself to look at it again through the eyes of loving curiosity of openness without searching for an answer. Just give yourself the next few moments to explore. You're ready.
Starting point is 00:14:41 Begin to bring your awareness back into the space around you. Back to that wonderful breath. Back to your body. As you move into this new season, consider what it might feel like to become a beginning. beginner again, to look at your life, your relationships, your work, your hobbies, without immediately deciding what it is to leave a little more room for surprise, for curiosity and for that playfulness, to consider the possibility that there is still something here that you haven't already
Starting point is 00:15:53 notice always be parts of our lives that feel familiar but familiarity does not mean that there is nothing left to discover through shoshin the beginner's mind we can gift ourselves the opportunity to look again to notice something different and perhaps to see something that was there all along and i encourage you to carry this mindset with you and do everything that you do everything that you do everywhere that you go the conversations that you have the relationships that you nourish everything that you are and everything that you have still yet to become take a nice deep breath in through your nose as if welcoming this breath this oxygen for the very first time letting it feel fresh and new it all go on your exhale through your perhaps lovingly placing a hand on your heart as if feeling it beat for the very first
Starting point is 00:17:51 time and sending so much love and gratitude inward to your own self to your practice and to your very beautiful human experience wishing you so much peace and so much love namaste
