Starting point is 00:00:00 See what's happening this instant. ABC 11 eyewitness news starts right now. Right now at 11, a heartbroken family and school community. Remembering a young life lost over the weekend. 15-year-old Jack O'Shea was killed after being hit by an accused drunk driver. It's a tragedy. Many are having a hard time grasping. What we're learning about the driver and his connection to Duke legend, Coach K.
Starting point is 00:00:28 But first here at 11, we begin with the weather because after a week of record-breaking heat, tonight a cold wind is driving temperatures way down. Hi everyone, thanks for joining. It's here for the news at 11. I'm Steve Daniels. And I'm Lauren Johnson. Tonight, cold temperatures moving through our region, prompting a frost advisory for parts of the viewing area tomorrow morning.
Starting point is 00:00:44 Let's get over to Chief Murrologist Don. Shwinnerker, Don. It feels like winter all over again. Yeah, it is feeling chilly out there tonight. Not our latest frost advisory. The latest one we've ever had is May 17th. So we're still in that window. Now you'll notice, Roxborough North, that is a freeze warning.
Starting point is 00:00:59 Frost advisory, including the Triangle South. should stay warm enough tonight. A look at your first alert predictor forecast model. Temperatures getting down around freezing tomorrow morning, but recovering into the 60s by the afternoon. Right now we're a 49 in Oxford, 51 in Lewisburg, 55, and Smithfield in 53 in Carborough. We're actually a little warmer than we were last night at this time, but that will change through the overnight. A look at the next 12 hours, those temperatures in the 40s by 3 o'clock. We'll bottom out in the 30s, but as the sun pops up at 7 o'clock, we warm back to 40, and we'll quick get rid of any frost out there with temperatures in the 50s.
Starting point is 00:01:35 After a cold start tomorrow, big warm up to first alert you about. We'll talk about that in your seven-day forecast coming up in just a bit. Steve. Tom, we'll see you soon. Let's turn now to the drought, and tonight thousands of people across central North Carolina are dealing with some new water restrictions from communities to hotels and even restaurants limitations are now in place and communities in and around Raleigh are doing what they can to adjust.
Starting point is 00:01:56 Let's take you out to the farm now where the drought conditions could impact the price you pay for produce at the grocery store. You can see the really dry, dusty conditions because of the drought at Western Farms in Lewisburg. According to Noah, Franklin County is dealing with severe drought conditions and the rainfall for the year is five inches below normal. And it's the sixth driest year on record. Jason Farmer, yeah, you heard right, his last name is Farmer, married into farming and his wife is a fourth generation farmer. And looking at the current drought, the farmer community is based on a lot of faith. It's solely based on faith that at the end of the year there will be enough crop that you can harvest and sell.
Starting point is 00:02:31 and feed this world and pay your bills. Jason told us in addition to the drought, they're dealing with the rising cost of fertilizer and diesel fuel and margins are really tight. And the higher cost of growing those crops could reach us as consumers at the grocery store. You can find all the details about the water restrictions right now at ABC11.com.
Starting point is 00:02:49 The first alert weather team also keeping you up to date on the drought conditions and our next chance for rain. New tonight, a community is mourning the loss of a 15-year-old Cardinal Gibbons freshman killed by an accused drunk driver. We also know the man accused of driving drunk is the grandson of longtime deutch basketball coach, Mike Shashefsky. Tom George is joining us live outside Cardinal Gibbons with the reactions that are pouring in there tonight.
Starting point is 00:03:09 Hi, Tom. Yeah, good evening. This has been absolutely heartbreaking for the community here at Cardinal Gibbons. Warning the loss of 15-year-old Jack O'Shea. He was a freshman here at Cardinal Gibbons on the baseball and basketball team. Now his life tragically cut short. A life cut short, Jack O'Shea pictured here in his obituary on Saturday was riding his e-bike here at Cole Mill Road in West Windham and Durham when he was hit by a car and killed. We've now learned the driver
Starting point is 00:03:37 of that car arrested for DWI 26-year-old Joseph Savarino, the grandson of longtime Duke men's basketball coach Mike Shishowski. Ali Jeffers, who represents the Durham chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, says stories like this in the Bull City and everywhere, a reminder that cases like this are all too common. I don't think anybody's exempt. I think it could happen to anybody. I mean, you know, anybody. And we've seen that. We're saying, we're seeing, we're seeing, celebrities, we're seeing everybody now, it seems to be doing that, you know, doing what they want to do. It's also the second DWI case in Coach Kay's family. Savarino's brother, Michael, was also charged with DWI in 2022 and sentenced to 12 months probation.
Starting point is 00:04:19 There's nothing new. And I would like to be at a point where we can talk about, discuss something else, discuss the fact that people outside and enjoying the weather, having a good time, riding their bike to doing that thing. other than having to discuss someone's being injured or killed by an impaired driver. Meanwhile, O'Shea's family sharing their pain and loss in a message on Facebook, saying Jack spent his last day doing what he loved, going to confession at church and riding his bike, his mother saying, quote, we will never understand why his time here was so short or why he was needed so soon, but we have to hold on to our faith that he is now our angel.
Starting point is 00:04:55 We are better because of him, and we will carry him with us always. Now we do know right now that Savarino, the driver, has been released after posting $100,000 bond. In the meantime, obviously a lot of mourning here in the Cardinal Gibbons community. We do know that memorial services for Jack O'Shea will be held this Friday in Raleigh, Tom, JBC 11, IWitness News. The family also hosting a celebration of life in his memory. Tom, thank you. New here at 11, eyewitness news, is following two different bad crashes. First one inside the belt line in Raleigh.
Starting point is 00:05:29 This happened about 7 o'clock at the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Glen Eden Drive near the Carolina Country Club. The details are limited, but you can see the crash involved at least two cars. At this time, it's not clear if anyone was hurt. And in Johnston County, a driver trying to get away from a state trooper at a high speed, wound up flipping his car. It began about 730 near the I-95 and I-40 interchange in Benson. That's when a trooper tried to pull over a black Chrysler for speeding, and the driver took off. The chase headed northbound on I-95, and then the driver got off near Four Oaks, lost control, and a curve, and rolled the car several times off the road. The 25-year-old was taken into custody there at the scene.
Starting point is 00:06:03 New here at 11, it's been three days now since three people were shot following a fight inside the Triangle Town Center Mall. And today we learned the Raleigh Mall has increased security to help keep shoppers safe. The parent company for the mall released a statement saying we have increased our number of security officers and are instituting additional safety measures to the facility. We continue to work closely with local law enforcement and their investigation and how we can ensure the property is safe. Triangle Town Center opened for business on Saturday one day after that shooting. Shoppers say they noticed an increase in security, but that did not stop another fight from breaking out inside the mall. According to the news and observer, no one has been arrested in that incident. A Smithfield man is facing rape charges after police say a woman escaped his home by jumping out of a bedroom window.
Starting point is 00:06:44 Smithfield police, a 44-year-old Demetrius Devon sexually assaulted an adult woman at his home on April 13th. Investigators say when he left the room, she jumped out of a window to escape. Police say Devon caught up with her outside, dragged her into the backyard where a nearby neighbor heard her calling for help and called 911. Devon left that scene and was not there by the time officers arrived. He was arrested two days later and faces a sleut of charges. Inslee State is investigating a reported rape on its campus. According to a wolf alert, the alleged rape happened yesterday at Braga Hall. Details are limited, but we do know police know who the suspect is.
Starting point is 00:07:20 However, that person has not been arrested. Good morning tomorrow, Governor Josh Stein is announcing his recommended budget for the next year. It comes as North Carolina remains the only state in the country without a budget. That means teachers and state employees have not received the raises they're expecting. It's also impacting Medicaid funding. We'll bring in the details of the governor's proposed budget tomorrow here on eyewitness news. And also tomorrow, Durham Mayor Leo Williams laying out his vision for the Bull City during his state of the city address. Yeah, we've got the frost advisory and freeze warnings to the north tonight. but temperatures are still in the 50s right now. Not a huge threat, but we could get awfully cold later tonight. We'll talk about that. And I first alert to a big warm-up just in time for your weekend in the seven-day forecast. Coming up.
Starting point is 00:08:38 Amazon presents Jeff versus Taco Truck Salsa, whether it's Verde, Roja, or the orange one. For Jeff, trying any salsa is like playing Russian roulette with a flamethrower. Luckily, Jeff saved with Amazon and stocked up on antacids, ginger tea, and milk. Habaniero? More like habanier, yes. Save the everyday with Amazon. He's accused of killing a teenage runaway who was found dead in the front trunk of his car last year. Today he entered a plea. On April 23rd, 2025, has been alleged by the complaint. Celeste, a 14-year-old at that time, went to Mr. Burke's house in the Hollywood Hills. She was never heard from again. April 23rd was the same-day pre-sale tickets went on sale for Burke's World Tour. Prosecutors alleged she was murdered with a sharp object and then her body was
Starting point is 00:10:54 mutilated on May 5th. It wasn't found until September in that front trunk. Prosecutors alleged Burke, who was 21, killed Revis, who was a child because she was on the verge of exposing their sexual relationship. ABC's Trevor Alt, speaking with Los Angeles County D.A., Nathan Hockman. What makes you confident you can prove these allegations? What makes us confident is the totality of the evidence where we believe we can prove each and every one of these three charges and the special circumstances and the special allegation beyond a reasonable doubt. But Burke's defense attorneys say they will prove Burke did not cause Revis's death. Revis's family's attorney says in a statement that in learning of Burke's arrest,
Starting point is 00:11:36 Celeste's father said, thank God, justice for Celeste. David Burke's attorneys say they want quick and public proceedings. His preliminary hearing is already set for Thursday of this week. Alex Stone, ABC News in downtown Los Angeles. Back here in North Carolina, a planned fight between teenagers led to a deadly shooting in the triad area. The gunfire broke out at Linebach Park in Winston-Salem this morning. Police say two young people met about 10 a.m. when their fight escalated, leading to several people exchanging gunfire. Five people are hurt, two people were killed.
Starting point is 00:12:08 There's no word yet about anyone getting arrested or charges filed. The Republican-led General Assembly has launched an investigation into former Governor Roy Cooper's administration focused on the early release of prison inmates. Republican legislative leaders announced the creation of the new oversight subcommittee today. The committee will investigate the COVID-era prisoner release of 4,200 inmates, they say, was part of a settlement between the Cooper administration and advocacy groups. Speaker of the House, Destin Hall, calling the release a miscarriage of justice. The investigation is happening as Cooper is running for the U.S. Senate seat soon to be vacated by retiring Senator Tom Tillis.
Starting point is 00:12:42 A Cooper campaign spokesperson releasing this statement in response to the investigation, saying in part these blatant lies from Republican, have been fact-checked for months and found to be false. After Roy fought against these releases in court, North Carolina law enforcement officials and parole officers looked to similar criteria. President Trump used a year prior when his administration released thousands of federal prisoners
Starting point is 00:13:03 due to COVID-19, and North Carolina Republican leaders were regularly briefed on this process over five years ago, only now raising this issue in the middle of a political campaign. New here at 11, electric bills are going up for people in Selma. The Selma Town Council voted to raise. rates after the town's wholesale electricity supplier increased its prices by more than 4% on April 1st. For a typical residential customer, that's an increase of about $8.60 a month.
Starting point is 00:13:29 Residential rates overall go up about 5%. Larger commercial customers will have a roughly 8% increase. Even with the increase, some of rates, they say, remain at or below what neighboring towns like Benson and Clayton are charging. Delta Airlines has become the first airline to suspend flights from the RDU Airport, at least in part due to the soaring cost of jet fuel as the war with Iran continues. Our news gathering partners at the News and Observer Report, Delta will not fly to and from RDEU in Las Vegas from June 2nd until September the 8th. And it comes as other airlines are making similar moves. Air Canada is spending six routes right now because of jet fuel prices. They've roughly doubled. They include flights from Toronto and Montreal, the JFK.
Starting point is 00:14:06 That begins on June 1st. Now to the next step in America's return to the moon. So check this out. Today, NASA employees and space contractors gathered in Louisiana for a rollout of the rocket that, the rocket, that will take the Artemis 3 crew into space. This is Mishu assembly facility in New Orleans. About 1,500 workers helped build this rocket core stage along with the Orion crew capsule
Starting point is 00:14:29 and the Artemis launch abort system. It will now head to the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. The Artemis 3 launch is set to take place in the middle of next year is scheduled to be the final mission before NASA since astronauts to the moon in 2028. NASA's not messing around.
Starting point is 00:14:44 They've got some plan. All right, get ready to do some stargazing. The Lyrid meteor shower is underway and the peak is tomorrow night. If you want to see the shower zipping through the air, make sure you head out somewhere that doesn't have a lot of light pollution. And obviously we need clear skies. But I know who we can talk to about that. The forecast for the skies tomorrow night.
Starting point is 00:15:04 Our resident scientist. Yeah, and I think you will be able to see a few tomorrow night. Now the proceeds are the really big one. That's the one where we usually see a lot of them. But I still think you could see a few tomorrow night. The skies are looking clear. You may see an isolated one or two tonight. night or the night after. That can tend to happen around those meteor showers, too. So
Starting point is 00:15:22 keep your eyes to the skies. A live look on your first alert seven-day forecast. Won't make you wait for it. Temperatures tomorrow in the 60s. It is the first alert day. That is because of the frosty start. After the cold start tomorrow, we recover nicely. We almost 70 degrees. That's still below average. Earth Day, 84. We're in the upper 80s. As we head into the weekend. Lots of weekend activities going on. We'll talk more about those coming up. Live look on the first alert Doppler net tonight. Wait a few sprinkles work through about 4, 5, 6 o'clock, just a couple of spots, off sprinkles, but most of you were dry. Those are gone now. If we take a live look into downtown Durham tonight on the mutual tower, sky cam gorgeous shot there, 55 clear skies, and a north-northeast wind at 7 miles per hour. Let's go Mannyota Murphy tonight. 50s across the state, 51 down at the coast, 55 down at ECU.
Starting point is 00:16:14 You've dropped into the 40s up in Chase City. 57 down in Lumberton. Triad checks in at 51, 51, 58, Charlotte, Boone, a little cooler, 45, 60s down south of Augusta, Georgia, tonight, 65 degrees. We'll see our temperatures tonight going from the 50s into the 30s, and it's at northern tier. That's where you will see the best chance at some patchy frost or frost or even freezing temperatures up around the border. As you get down toward the triangle, it would be more patchy, frost as will be in the upper 30s, but some of the outlying areas, especially sand for the icebox of the sand hills, you're always a little cooler. You'll be in the mid-30s, 40s down to the south.
Starting point is 00:16:54 But because of that chance at some freezing temperatures, there's a freeze warning in effect for the northern counties tonight to frost advisory that does extend down into Raleigh. And you might be thinking, I thought we were done with this after the hot temperatures next week. No, our average last frost is around tax day. But our latest frost ever, was in 1984 on May 17th. So we're not done with the chance at frost just yet. It's not unprecedented to see these cool overnight temperatures. Skies have cleared tonight.
Starting point is 00:17:23 We did have the clouds earlier. Sun went down. We lost the heating of the day. The atmosphere stabilized and things cleared out. We've got clear real estate all the way back into the Midwest tonight. That's why that high pressure working across tomorrow night will give us a shot at seeing those meteors. If you do chance out to check those out. Some shower strong thunderstorms down in parts of Texas.
Starting point is 00:17:44 Unfortunately, we're just keeping the rain away for the next several days. Your first alert predictor forecast model. So we go through the overnight, you can watch those temperatures going into the 30s tomorrow down around freezing up north. 30s through the triangle, 40s in the sandhills. But the sun comes up, we're getting a higher sun angle and the numbers will recover quickly. And by tomorrow afternoon, we're in the 60s to near 70 degrees. Now tomorrow night, temperatures a little warmer will be in the 40s and 50s tomorrow night. The model shows a couple of clouds developed.
Starting point is 00:18:14 by 7 o'clock tomorrow morning, but we're clear through the overnight. And then as we go through the day on Wednesday, notice those temperatures surging into the 80s. There is a little bit of a frontal boundary up here. It tries to press south and give us a shower. I wouldn't put too much in that model. And let's show you why. Let's zoom it out a little bit. Here's the surface map.
Starting point is 00:18:33 So we've got the high pressure working across on Wednesday. Temperatures in the 80s, 80s all the way back into Memphis. As we go into Thursday, there's that front trying to press south, but I think that high pressure is going to be. that high pressure is going to be strong enough. It will keep the moisture away and keep us dry. Forecast looks like this for tomorrow. Temperatures across the region in the 60s. It's about at 70 in Fayetteville.
Starting point is 00:18:54 And back to that seven day. Friday we kick off the Dogwood Festival. We'd love to see you down there. ABC 11 are proud sponsor. We'll have a boost set up. We've got the ALS walk on Saturday. I will be emceeing that. Please come out and support that project.
Starting point is 00:19:07 Sunday a lingering shower 78 and Monday. Hopefully the canes won't need that. They'll win their game. and then went up in Ottawa and end this series, but we'll have to wait and see on that, guys. Yeah, and they're in overtime right now. Still try it. A lot on the line.
Starting point is 00:19:21 Yeah, Don, thank you. Still ahead, musical therapy for mental health. Next, a program at Cape Fear Valley Health that's hitting all the right notes for patients. And before we go to break, just a reminder of what Don told us about thousands of people hitting the streets of Raleigh for the annual ALS walk. This weekend, registration is open for anyone who wants to join our ABC 11 Stogner's strong team.
Starting point is 00:19:43 the ALS walk is on Saturday at Halifax Mall. I witness news. We are local news weeknights four to six 30 and 11. Cape Fear Valley Health in Fayetteville is using an unexpected tool to help patients heal. And it all has to do with the power of music. Twice a week, board certified music therapist Katie Walters brings instruments, voices and words of affirmation into the hospital. The program primarily reaching roughly 24 adults and up to 12 adolescents dealing with stress,
Starting point is 00:20:14 schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The program is funded in part by a $12,000 grant from the Arts Council. It can promote positive self-esteem, reduce negative self-talk, improve confidence, and ultimately, hopefully improve coping as well. It's calmness, peaceful, and she come in and play music, cheer you up. For patients like William Mitchell, who used to write music himself, the sessions are already something he looks forward to every week. In Wake County, the Holly Springs Community Library is closing this weekend through the end of the year.
Starting point is 00:20:47 This will allow for the building's first major renovation since it opened back in 2006. The renovation will modernize the space with new flooring and furniture, a redesigned layout and updated paint and finishes. Over the past 20 years, the library has hosted more than 3 million visitors and circulated more than 6 million items. The library will close Sunday and is expected to reopen. Fingers are crossed. I wore the outfit for the win. Meet the win, okay? And there was a great moment. Mark Jankowski got a puck in the net there for the canes in overtime, but it was called back.
Starting point is 00:23:58 So they're at it again. All right, Jemis, hopefully your good luck charm. Thank you and thank you at home for watching. That's going to do it for us here tonight. We'll see you tomorrow. Good night. ABC 11 eyewitness News is sponsored by Capitol Chevrolet. Together, let's drive.
