Right now at 11 water rescue crews responding to a pond after eyewitnesses say a man jumped into the water and never came back up what we're learning about that incident. And North Carolina back in the political spotlight, state Democrats holding their annual unity dinner tonight hoping to drumming. up some energy in the party out of the final stretch of election season. North Carolina, the rest of the country is counting on you. And the countdown to the new school year is on. Back to school giveaways popping up across the triangle today. We'll take you inside a few of them. Those stories just ahead, but first,

we're taking you outside on this warm first night of August, beautiful clear skies out in Raleigh at this hour. And we hope you enjoyed today because tomorrow, the viewing area, getting ready for a level one severe weather risk, rain, thunderstorms, damaging winds all on the table right now. We're watching Highwood News at 11. Thanks so much for joining us on this Saturday night. I'm Tom George Dewan Hogart. Has the night off tonight. A stretch of dry weather may be coming to an end.

The first alert forecast team declaring tomorrow a first alert day because of that potential for those severe storms and damaging winds. So we want to send things right over to meteorologist Cruz Medina. He is tracking it all. What do we need to know, Cruz? Hi there, Tom. A lot of Sunday is actually going to be dry. We could start with a few showers. There'll be a few hours of dry time.

And then we're watching out for that isolated severe risk during the afternoon and evening. So tipters will be in the 80s despite all of the cloud cover. And of course, the showers and storms we see. That unsettled pattern is going to carry us into next week as well with Monday and Tuesday also looking pretty wet as far as rain coverage goes. Tonight on the satellite and radar, most of the rain has stayed back to our west today. Parts of the Piedmont Triad region getting in on some rain, even some flat. Flood warnings out there back toward Mount Airy, but our area is quiet for now. As we go throughout the rest of tonight though, tipters only drop it to the lower 70s.

It'll be very warm and muggy as you start out your Sunday and like I mentioned, there could be a few showers around in the morning. So here's how Sunday looks as a snapshot. The morning features a round of showers. We get several hours of dry time and then throughout the afternoon and evening. We'll notice storm starting to pop up, particularly late afternoon and into the evening hours. That's the wettest period we're watching for. And also during the evening, that's where we have that chance to see an isolated strong storm with damaging winds. The highs, again, only making it into the 80s. That'll be the trend going into next week as well as we stay unsettled. But toward the end of the week, as rain chances go down, the temperatures will rise.

Well, developing right now, we're working to learn more about a water rescue in Raleigh.

This happened this afternoon in the 2,400 block of East Millbrook Road near Atlantic Avenue and eyewitness telling our breaking news crew one of his friends jumped into the pond, went under, and then never came back up. Right now we're still working to learn more about who that man is and exactly what happened. We have reached out to Raleigh fire and are waiting to hear back. And also in Raleigh, police responding to two separate shots fired calls. today. The first one happening in a strip mall on Rock Quarry Road. This is the 5,400 block of Rock Quarry Road right near the Dollar General Store. Multiple police responding to the area.

You can see the yellow tape in front of the stores right there. We have reached out to RPD to see what exactly happened and if anyone was hurt. And meanwhile, police also responding to this other shooting in a Raleigh neighborhood. This one is on Shellam Street right near Newburn Avenue in South Raleigh Boulevard. According to RPD, officers responded to a shooting call when they got there, they found shell casings and droplets of blood but could not find the victim. Well, tonight, Amanda's behind bars after a deadly stabbing in Rale, 33-year-old David Hoyle facing a murder charge for allegedly stabbing Matthew Bullock to death. This happened last night on Crab Orchard Drive near Lake Johnson. Right now, it's not clear how the two knew each other

or what led up to that deadly violence. Meanwhile, the soccer field bathrooms at Nightdale Station Park are closed for the weekend after they were vandalized. The Nightdale Police Department sharing this photo on Facebook you see right there showing some of that damage. They say this happened overnight. Someone went into the bathrooms and destroyed them, breaking the toilet, throwing trash everywhere. If you know anything about the vandalism, Nightdale Police would like to talk to you. And we have a sad update in the search for a missing Western North Carolina woman. The Kataba County Sheriff's Office says the body of 58-year-old Robin Doyle of Hickory was found yesterday afternoon.

She was reported missing earlier this week. The discovery of those remains coming just days after police had already arrested. and charged a registered sex offender in connection with her disappearance. Right now, investigators have not shared her cause of death. Well, turning now to your voice, your vote. North Carolina Democrats gathering in Raleigh for their annual unity dinner, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren delivering a keynote address to a sold-out audience. It all comes as all eyes are on the Senate race here in North Carolina,

both parties hoping for a win that will help decide control of the Senate in Washington, D.C., a lot at stake. John Dowding, joining us live outside the Raleigh Convention Center. John, a lot of stake here. What was the main message from Democrats tonight? Yeah, Tom, the party really is leaning into that frustration, center around affordability. A lot of the conversations here are leaning into affordability. That's what they're also saying. They're hearing from voters at work. It's something we heard from Senator Elizabeth Warren today, as well as former Governor Roy Cooper. That was what a lot of their messaging was echoing earlier today.

But we also heard some pushback from some voters outside of the convention center during that dinner who are speaking out against Governor Cooper's ambitions for winning a Senate. seat in Washington. Democrats out with an urgent message for voters Saturday in the final stretch of the midterm elections. North Carolina, the rest of the country is counting on you. The state Democratic Party held their annual unity dinner, showing up funding and excitement ahead of the November midterm elections, as all eyes across the country are on the Senate

race between former Governor Roy Cooper and former R&C chairman Michael Watley. We will win the Senate seat. We will make stuff costs less for hard. working families, and we will build a stronger North Carolina for everyone. The dinner Saturday brought out some of the party's biggest names with a keynote address from Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren. Senator Warren telling eyewitness news she felt a lot of energy for Democrats as she knocked on doors and carry.

We have a president who promised he would lower costs and didn't. So now the Democrats say, we're going to get this done. Democrats hoping that a message centered around affordability will win over voters in November. I think that all you're going to hear from North Carolina Democrats is talking about making sure that we're lowering costs for people across the state. It's the number one thing that I hear on the doors when I'm out knocking. In a statement to eyewitness news, the NCGOP sent a statement saying in part, quote, The North Carolina Democratic Party has fully embraced the move to the radical left's socialist agenda. And tonight have brought in Elizabeth Warren to support Roy Cooper, Anita Earls, and their extremist nominees in Raleigh.

Ahead of the dinner, a small group of people gathered outside the convention center speaking out. against former Governor Cooper. I just want to let people know that we don't think that he did a good job when he was governor and we certainly don't want him to be in the Senate. In his statement, the Watley campaign said in part, quote, Roy Cooper has led to charge for higher taxes, health care for illegal immigrants, and letting criminals run free from prison. So it should come as no surprise that he is embracing his fellow socialist Elizabeth Warren today in Raleigh.

Now we also heard from North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Anita Earls today as well. while she's facing an election for her for another term on the Supreme Court, she's facing a race against Republican challenger Sarah Stevens as well. Just a reminder here, early voting begins here in North Carolina in a little more than just 70 days. Election season right around the corner. Live here in downtown Raleigh, I'm John Dowding. All right, and as we approach the November elections, we want to keep you up to date on some important dates to remember. a look right there. October 9th is the deadline to register to vote in-person early voting is going to be from October 15th through October 31st. You can register to vote during early voting. The last day you can request an absentee ballot is October 20th and November 3rd is Election Day. That's also the deadline for all of those absentee ballots. Well next on eyewitness News at 11, a deadly mass shooting playing out in the parking lot of an Idaho fast food restaurant. What we're learning tonight about the incident and the alleged shooter. And the extreme danger in the Pacific north east dozens of wildfires now prompting evacuations across

multiple states and cruises back with a look at those temps outside all right tipter still sitting around 80 degrees tonight as we go forward we are expecting highs in the 80s the next few days but also some very wet weather is going to set up shop across central north carolina the details coming up in your seven day forecast right now at 11 breaking news unfolding in idaho police responding to an active shooter situation near an in-and-out burger in Twin Falls. Terrifying video showing a man standing in the drive-thru at this Twin Falls in-and-out, pointing a gun and firing at families in the parking lot, running for their lives, cars speeding away, running over a traffic cone. Police say they're still not sure how many people were killed or injured, but the suspect is now dead. They're still

working to identify the suspect and a possible motive. Well, turning now to the latest from the war with Iran, sources telling ABC News, President Donald Trump is reportedly weighing another round of intense strikes on Iranian energy targets. These potential attacks come as U.S. embassies in the Middle East are now issuing warnings to Americans in the region. Here's ABC's Matt Rivers with the details. According to two U.S. officials familiar with the matter, President Trump is weighing a round of intense strikes on energy targets in Iran. U.S. Central Command says planning for the potential attacks is well underway, but those plans could still change. Iran has already threatened to retaliate against strikes on its energy sites by hitting Israeli targets and U.S. energy infrastructure

in the Middle East, according to Iranian state media. A spokesman for Kuwait's Ministry of Defense says its air defenses intercepted Iranian drones inside Kuwaiti airspace earlier today. Meanwhile, the U.S. has been pressing for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. A British Maritime Safety Agency is reporting two incidents took place Saturday in the critical waterway. President Trump has said that while he's not ruling out a deal to end the war, he says talks have not gone well. I'm losing faith in them because they do lie and they do minister. Amid escalating tensions at least 10 American embassies across the Middle East issuing alerts, saying Americans in the region should exercise extreme caution and should consider departing.

Here at home, investigators are looking at whether Iran or any of its proxies are responsible for cyber attacks on water systems across Minnesota. Iran does have the capability to go in and wreak havoc to go in in China. the settings on the water. Every industry, every business relies on water. And so if you just impact that one little thing, it will cause a ripple effect. According to sources, Georgia and Michigan are reporting similar cyber attacks on some of their water systems. And just last week, a number of federal agencies, including the FBI and NSA, warned of ongoing Iranian-affiliated cyber targeting of internet-connected operational technology. Matt Rivers, ABC News, in Amman, Jordan. Well, today marks six months since Nancy Guthrie was reported missing.

She's the mother of today's show host Savannah Guthrie. Savannah, renewing her plea for answers as to what happened to her mom in an Instagram post today, Savannah saying, quote, we have lived every moment, every breath, and every heartbeat and agony and despair ever since. Today's post coming after the Pima County Sheriff's Office in Tucson, Arizona, released the two ransom notes from the days immediately after they say she was taken from her home. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nano says he is still hopeful someone will be able to come forward. with information on what happened to Nancy Guthrie. We hope that by releasing some of this information,

it will jog somebody to think about what a lot of people have called this with information, but we also know a lot of people are hesitant to do so. And so I hope that by constantly reminding the public, we're here, we're not going anywhere. And there's a $1.2 million reward for any information on the 84-year-old's disappearance. We'll turning now to the extreme fire danger impacting parts of the Pacific Northwest.

Hot, dry, and windy conditions fueling dozens of wildfires forcing evacuations in several states. Here's ABC's Alison Kosick with the latest. A statewide burn ban ordered in Washington with a dozen wildfires raging across the state. The governor activating the National Guard to support firefighting operations. The moderate fire burning more than 40,000 acres forcing evacuations. Planes dropping fire retardant from above to battle the massive blaze. In Oregon, more than half the state facing severe drought conditions, with at least 30 large fires burning.

More than 300,000 acres burned in the Roe Creek Complex fires. An astronaut aboard the International Space Station sharing this photo of the massive plume of wildfire smoke stretching across Oregon. In southeastern Idaho, the fast-moving big rock fire has charred more than a thousand acres threatening nearby communities. And in Northern California, firefighters encountering walls of thick smoke and flying embers as they responded to the woodside fire outside of Santa Rosa. That blaze, which is now roughly 40% contained, has burned at least 150 acres.

The flames are being fueled by hot, dry, and windy conditions. The dry trees definitely contributed to a lot of spot fires. That's where the challenges were. Those extreme temperatures extending to Southern California, where beachgoers are also being warned of rough surf and dangerous rip currents. I don't go anything beyond where I can easily stand. The extreme heat warning is forecast to continue through Sunday. Allison Kosick, ABC News, New York. Yeah, definitely thinking of our friends out west with those dry conditions, hopefully they can get some relief.

And I know back here at home, you know, we've been dealing with those record drought conditions. We've been chipping away at it a little bit. Enough to those water restrictions are easing back up in Raleigh, but finally getting a little bit of a break again, possibly heading into the week, right? Absolutely. So we're entering an unsettled pattern, which bodes well for the drought conditions we continue to face here. So going into Sunday, that's likely to be one of the wettest of the next four days. But Monday and Tuesday will also feature rounds of showers and a few embedded storms in the mix.

By the time we get into Wednesday, it becomes more spotty in nature. and that'll be the case as we end the next week as well. We've got a system in the mid-levels of the atmosphere. This could be spinning back to our west. So this front here is not going to move much. It's attached to that system. So we're going to see waves of rain coming in throughout the next few days as moisture surges in all the way from the Gulf ahead of that system.

That's what's going to drive our rain chances. And it's also driving rain back to our west as we speak. So you can see over the past six hours, which is what the radar is looping through. there's actually been some pretty heavy rain in the mountains, foothills, and even parts of the triads. So a few flash flood warnings out there by Mount Airy. You can see the system spinning back to our west. And again, it's kind of going to remain parked there over the next few days.

So that rain will inch closer to us. And it's just a matter of when we see the rain. So let's track out the rain chance that we expect through tonight and into tomorrow. So overnight, there could be a few sprinkles. I think the best chance of seeing any showers in the overnight hours or at least in the next 12 hours is likely going to be toward daybreak. So we could have a few showers around in the early morning hours, I'd say between 7 and 9 o'clock. These will be lifting off to the north. The next round holds off until the late afternoon and really into the evening. Now one thing to note with these showers,

notice on predictor, they're going to be moving from south to north, and that set up there could actually lead to some flooding. That's not going to be a widespread issue, but these showers and storms will continue to go over the same areas throughout the afternoon and evening, and that's something that we'll have to watch for tomorrow. Now, As far as the severe potential goes, only a level one out of five for tomorrow. It's not going to be anything widespread like we had earlier this week on Tuesday. Damaging winds are possible in some of the strongest storms and, of course, that flash flooding threat that I was mentioning. Both of those things are generally low, but still something to watch us.

We go throughout the day on Sunday. So tomorrow's forecast as a snapshot, there will be some dry breaks. The best chance of rain throughout the first half of the day comes in the early morning hours. So if you're heading out to church or grabbing breakfast early in the morning. morning, that would apply to you. You might want to bring a raincoat early in the day. By the time we get into the late after late morning and early afternoon hours, we dry out for a bit. Temperatures reach the mid-80s and then we'll see the late afternoon shower and storms start to fire up. Those will linger into the evening. So this is a snapshot of what the next five-day rainfall

totals could look like. And it's looking like an inch plus for most of central North Carolina. So again, not all of this is going to fall tomorrow. I mentioned Monday, Tuesday and even Wednesday would be a bit unsettled with around of showers. We will eventually see those accumulations start to stack up, which again is going to help the drop condition. So we already saw significant improvements in this Thursday's drop monitor that was released. Compared to last week, we saw most areas improve a category or two of our drop monitor. So some areas were severe, now moderate, and others were extreme or exceptional and now severe. So we're seeing some progress is just coming slowly. We have to be patient and hope that these rain chances remain abundant over the next few weeks.

Going into the middle of the week, notice as the rain chances become more spotty, so under 50%, we start to see the temperatures rise into the mid to upper 80s. We should end up in the low 90s by the time we end out next week and head into the weekend. Tom, back to you. All right, thanks, Cruz. and families are trying to get prepared to help parents out the Durham County Sheriff's Office organizing a back-to-school event today. Jemise Price explains why this event comes right on time as many families are dealing with those shrinking budgets. In the summer heat, hundreds of people pack the Durham County Stadium to grab free school supplies at the annual stop the violence and resource fair. This is wonderful for the community. Pencils, pens, notebooks, the Durham community stepped up in a big way to give back just in time for the start of the school year. I'm very thankful. Moms like Betty Little appreciates the community's support.

She came out to the school supply drive with her daughter Armani and her two nieces, Kayla and Kamaya. This is wonderful for the community. Durham County Sheriff Clarence Burkhead says it's important. Students have a strong start to the school here. I am convinced if we didn't do this, some of these kids would not have supplies. And we know how tough it is on teachers now. They don't have the resources to buy extra supplies. So again, this is really critical.

for these kids. And the support goes beyond school supplies. They're also working to connect families with the tools they need. I just spoke with the lady who's living in the extended state. So we're connecting them with the resources that they need so they can get stabilized and get on their feet. This is the fourth year of the school supply drive and it arise as families are facing rising back to school expenses. According to the National Retail Federation, parents will spend nearly $864 per child this school year. A lot of parents don't have enough money to support kids, and they struggle to get their kids' schools supplies.

In Durham. Akela Davis, ABC 11, eyewitness news. Back to school right around the corner and over in Raleigh, Carolina Hurricane player Jacob Slavin, hosting a back-to-school bash with the Raleigh Dream Center. 3,000 backpacks and supplies were given out to children served by the organization. There were also festival rides, games, and food trucks. Love to see it.

All right, let's check in with Trayvon Miles now for a look at what's ahead in sports. A lot to talk about, a lot with UNC and everything else. Always, right? There's always something going on at the University of North Carolina. But Tom, you just talked about back to school.
