Right now, live coverage from your local news leader, preparing you for tomorrow starting tonight and your first alert forecast.
Here's what's happening where you live. This is ABC 11 eyewitness news.
Tonight we are following breaking new details in a mass shooting at Brown University that left two people dead and multiple others hurt that attack, leaving students visibly shaken and the community on high alert.
This is the day that one hopes never happens and it has.
We will come together as a community and we'll get through this.
We have the latest in the massive manhunt for the suspected shooter.
And here in Central North Carolina, it's another cold night across the viewing area and it will get even colder.
Temperatures are about to drop to even more colder and it'll feel like single digits by this time tomorrow.
You're watching Eyewitness News.
I'm Dwan Hogarth, so glad that you could join us tonight.
By this time tomorrow, your thermostat may be hard at work.
Temperatures are expected to dip into the teens and stay that way through Monday morning.
We're on this.
We're on the cruise. Medina has been on top of this from our First Alert Forecast Center.
Tomorrow is the first alert day cruise with the cold weather advisory and effect for tomorrow night.
So what else do we need to know?
Well, this is a pretty short cold snap that we're expecting to want, but it is going to come in with a punch.
So watch these fields like temperatures.
And this is spilling in far beyond North Carolina.
We're talking back in the Midwest, the Northeast, and even parts of.
of the deep south where this cold is going to reach.
So Arctic Front moves in tomorrow.
That's going to bring us a little bit of rain.
But here are those single digit feels like temperatures or wind chills as we go into early Monday.
And that's what we have those cold weather advisories in effect.
Starting tomorrow evening at 6 p.m.
lasting through 9 a.m. on Monday.
And this is for all of Central North Carolina.
It does extend into Mecklenburg County, Virginia as well.
So this cold is going to reach far and wide, like I said, even beyond our region.
But the Arctic front itself, you can see it back here.
There's actually a pretty decent winter storm in progress over parts of the Midwest right now sliding into areas like Washington, D.C., and into parts of the northeast as we go into tonight.
Now, we're only going to get the rain from that, at least in most of our area.
This is going to be coming in tomorrow morning.
So what you see moving through Tennessee, that impacts us by tomorrow.
So ahead of that, the clouds are already increasing, and we'll see those continue to thicken up as we go into early tomorrow.
So tipters only get down into the upper 30s, lower 40s tonight.
It's not going to be all that cold, at least compared to what we're going to see tomorrow night.
But the tipters you're seeing there, that's the warmest it gets tomorrow.
And throughout the day, instead of tipter's rising, they actually fall.
So here are those forecasts that feels like temperatures.
And you can see most of the afternoon is going to be spent in the 20s and teens and even colder as we go into early parts of next week.
So Monday, very cold as well.
that it's actually the coldest as we start off Monday, but then we've got some improvements on the way.
We'll talk about that coming up in your seven-day forecast in a few minutes.
Duwan.
Hi, Cruz, many thanks.
And as we prepare for those dangerously cold temperatures, shelters in the triangle are already preparing to take in more unhoused people.
In Durham, the rescue mission has launched its Operation Rescue Warm Shelter.
John Dowding, speaking with the shelter there about the help being given and has advised from doctors and mechanics on how to keep you and your family safe in the cold.
Well, it's a chilly night tonight, but by this time,
tomorrow. It's going to be dangerously cold outside. That's why help is being offered now to
make sure everyone has a way to escape the cold. I think we're getting well down into the low teens
this coming week. That's deadly weather. A dangerous blast of Arctic air is headed for the triangle
tomorrow. It's really cold outside to be sleeping outside. The head of the cold, the Durham rescue
mission is activating Operation Rescue Warm Shelter. Operation Rescue Warm Shelter is when we open
our doors to any and everybody that can come in and we have no restrictions on them.
essentially. Just come in and get in out of the weather.
The shelter provides more than a hot meal and a warm place to stay for people like Joshua Shifflet.
I don't have identification because all my stuff was stolen. I'm from Virginia, so to get my stuff back,
it's kind of complicated. So I needed a warm place to stay to be able to, you know, get my head in the right place.
As the temperatures begin to drop, doctors say take steps to protect yourself before going outside,
especially for vulnerable populations like the elderly or those with chronic medical conditions.
Some sort of moisture wicking on the most inner layer, a middle layer that's more insulating.
So something like wool or fleece that can be insulating and then an outer layer that protects you from the element.
And doctors recommend knowing the warning signs of when cold exposure could become hypothermia.
As the hypothermia gets progressive and worse, you can actually have confusion, slurred speech, drowsiness.
But don't forget, check your car as well before hitting the road.
Make sure the fluids are topped off and the battery is in good shape.
This time you've got a lot of batteries.
They're marginal and cold temperatures bring them back down to failing.
So the cold temperatures create a quicker breakdown when it comes to batteries and also tire pressure.
Doctors also recommend checking in on your elderly neighbors as this air gets colder.
Also, now is the time to make sure you have a cold weather kit prepared in your car.
Make sure you have blankets, some food, and rechargeable batteries for your devices.
In downtown Raleigh, I'm John Dowding.
ABC 11, eyewitness news.
All right, John, thank you.
And as we prepare for the incoming Arctic air,
now is a good time to download the ABC11 app.
It's a great way for you to stay up to date on current weather conditions.
Plus, you can always check the first alert Doppler night and the seven-day forecast any time.
Well, now to that breaking news out of Rhode Island tonight.
Authorities say two people have been killed and eight others critically injured following a shooting at Brown University.
Here's what we know so far at this hour.
That shooting taking place around 4 o'clock this afternoon.
and an engineering building on campus there.
All of the victims are students.
University officials say final exams were taking place in the building
at the time of the shooting.
The gunman has been described as wearing all black,
and police are still searching for that suspect.
The City of Providence has also shared this video
of the person of interest in today's shooting.
You could see them here,
a black jacket, pants, black hat there.
Police do not believe there are any additional threats
to the community at this time as well.
ABC's Johnny Fernandez has more on this developing story for us.
Just 12 days before Christmas, a deadly shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.
Authorities say it took place at a building that houses the School of Engineering and Physics Department
during the second day of final exams.
I can confirm that there are two individuals who have died this afternoon.
Students visibly shaken.
When it first started happening, yeah, there was definitely a lot of people running that way, like, scrambling.
was working in my lab. There were three other students with me. We decided to turn the light
off and close all the doors and hide under our desks. Law enforcement converging on the scene.
An alert going out to faculty and students urging them to lock doors, silence their phones,
and stay hidden until further notice. Immediately the active shooter protocol goes into effect.
All multi-agency's respond and lock down the area immediately. They put up a grid around the area
and they're doing immediate entry into this engineering goal.
In a letter to students, the president of the university,
calling it a deeply tragic day and urging the community to remain vigilant.
President Trump offering prayers for the victims and their families.
All we can do right now is pray for the victims and for those that were very badly hurt, it looks like.
Authorities say a suspect dressed in black remains at large.
They added, this is the first shooting in the school's history.
Johnny Fernandez, ABC News, New York.
Tonight, the state highway patrol is investigating after a car was found in a creek in Cumberland County.
It happened overnight on Cedar Creek Road.
Emergency crews responded to the area after receiving reports of a sinking vehicle.
Firefighters found a white car fully submerged in the creek about 20 feet off the road.
Crews were able to lift that car to check for victims, but it was empty.
Investigators say they are still working to learn if anyone was driving the car and how it got there.
Juliet, Akath, Ochoela.
Go pack.
Weekend at NC State, the university holding its fall commencement this morning at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh.
More than 3,300 students turn their tassels today.
UNC's winter commencement is set for tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the Dean Smith Center.
Pulitzer Prize winning author and longtime Carolina historian, Kathleen Duvall will give the keynote address.
While still ahead, one person is dead after a U-Haul truck exploded.
What officials say led to that blast.
And the holiday season is in full swing all across Central Carolina.
We will take you inside the big parades today that happened in our area today.
Plus, we have an update on young Onyx Williams.
Here he is the Durham little boy battling a rare form of cancer.
Well, he's marking another major milestone.
The big honor he got from Duke University today.
and let's go ahead and bring cruise back into our conversation.
Hey there, well, we still have at least somewhat clear skies right now,
so if you're heading out to get a look of the Jiminid Meteor shower tonight,
this peaks toward midnight, by the way.
Look directly up in a dark place, you might see one,
but bundle up if you're heading out to Patricia in the 40s,
extreme cold on the way tomorrow, your seven-day forecast on the other side of this break.
You and the Per Noelle, the pro of the embellage,
but here, see, so on the deballage,
The mull Reese-O-Bird-Arachid
make your art of the debilage at the pre-enade.
And with three mull-o-beard-rachid,
cremeo and chocolate fondant by packet,
you have to what to train?
To find, and again, this pleasure, sucre, saline.
And again, and again.
The Pern-N-Hale has his biscuits,
you, ta Reese.
And there's nothing like Reese's.
Well, new tonight, one person is dead
after a U-Haul truck exploded in a parking lot in Idaho.
say the truck appear to be transporting flammable items such as gasoline, propane tanks, and other items.
The explosion caused damage to nearby stores and is believed to be an accident.
The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
The countdown is on to Christmas from the triangle to the sand hills, thousands of people across our viewing area.
We're out and about at several holiday parades today.
In Wake County, the 45th Carrie J.C.'s Christmas parade made its sway through downtown carry.
meteorologist Don Schwinnaker, big weather there, making an appearance.
Don was also at the Holly Springs Happy Holidays Parade, Floats, bands, dancers, and all sorts of entertainment marching through town there today.
Meanwhile, over in Durham, crowds lining the downtown area for the city's holiday parade.
Steve Daniels was there making an appearance for us.
And IWitness News also taking part in the holiday spirit down in Fayetteville today.
The 2025 Christmas parade included several high school bands.
It's the ABC 11 storm chaser you see here on the streets there in Fayetteville,
cruising down the road with our Amber Repenta there at the back and Penelope Lopez there riding shotgun.
Well, Hanukkah begins tomorrow.
There will be two menorah lightings on Tuesday night in Wake County in Raleigh.
The event is happening in Moore Square beginning at 5.30 p.m.
And the menorah lighting is also happening at the same time at downtown Kerry Park.
All right, so, what, 5.30 on Tuesday?
But before we get there, we're talking about tomorrow night, because it's...
it's going to what you say, feel like the single digits in a lot of places, or the teens, rather, yeah.
5.30 on Tuesday is going to feel warmer compared to what we see tomorrow evening. So bitter cold on the way.
There's no way around it. We're preparing you. We've been giving you the heads up for several days now.
And it's not like we don't see this just about every year, but think about the frequency of it.
We only get one or two of these really intense cold snaps every winter season. But realistically, we're not even in the winter season yet.
winter doesn't officially begin until December 21st. So this one's kind of early in the season.
I do want to talk about some other things in this forecast, though. So tomorrow we will see a little bit of rain as well.
And then for parts of Central North Carolina, a little bit of snow tomorrow. Monday is when the worst of the cold happens.
That's mainly going to be in the morning afternoon highs on Monday only in the mid 30s. So Sunday and Monday, our first alert days.
And by Tuesday, we should be back to around 50 degrees for a high with lots of sunshine. So tonight, still not feeling all that bad outside.
at least compared to what we'll see tomorrow night.
Tipters are in the 40s or 30s depending on your location.
And get a good look at these tipgers because that's about the warmest tipter you'll see early tomorrow
before those tipters start to fall through the afternoon.
Now if we look just to our north, you can see the leading edge of that cold is already moving through
parts of the mid-south and the mid-Atlantic region as well.
Check out the Dakotas.
They're seeing negative temperatures tonight and that extends into areas like Minnesota as well.
Minneapolis five degrees below zero this evening. And that was not a wind chill that I was showing you, by the way. That's the actual raw air temperature. So it's going to get cold as that Arctic blast moves in. Here's first alert predictor showing the clouds thickening up tonight. We will start today with a few light showers tomorrow. This will favor areas like the triangle and anywhere to the south and also to the east of the triangle. So morning showers last through about mid-morning. Here's that cold air really spilling in. So we'll see a transition to snow for areas northeast of Raleigh. So nor
Carolina, Roanoke Rapids, South Hill, Virginia, those areas could actually get a few
tenths of an inch of accumulation tomorrow. So nothing significant, but keep in mind it's not
going to melt with tipter's well below freezing. Now by the afternoon, that cold continues
to spill in. Tipters start to drop into the 20s and by Monday morning teens and single digits
in some instances, but once again, this is not feels like tipters. Those are the raw air
tipgers as we go into early Monday. So let's actually compare that to the feels like tipgers.
we could catch some wind gusts up to 35 miles per hour. So that's where that wind chill comes into play.
Throughout the morning hours filling like the 30s, but then through the afternoon, be prepared for the 20s.
So that's what you should dress for tomorrow. And then overnight Sunday and into Monday, that's when the coldness of the air arrives.
You see those numbers just go way down. And that's why we have that cold weather advisory in effect until 9 a.m. on Monday.
So if you're not a fan of the cold, we at least do have some relief on the way.
This comes to the middle of the week as high pressure moves in and our winds will turn out of the
southwest. That's going to push highs to near 50 degrees on Tuesday. And then by the time we get
into the back half of the week, we could actually be filling like spring. So you could see that
here in your seven-day forecast. It shows tipters rising into the low 60s by the time we get
into Thursday, maybe a few showers overnight Thursday and into Friday. Then by the time we get
into next weekend, we're back in the 50s. So lots of flip-flopping back and forth in this
forecast to one. But overall, the messaging is for that Arctic cold tomorrow.
tomorrow. Be prepared. Yeah, so what we're saying, like at least if you have the heat at home
that's going to be cranked all the way up, some of these thermostats have like that emergency
heat. So if you smell your thermostat, you know, working a particular type of way, it's because
it's too cold outside and it's just trying to crank yourself up. That's right. Drip your pipes too.
All right. Thanks, Cruz. You got it. Up next to you may want to check your freezer. That's because
