Right now, live coverage from your local news leader, preparing you for tomorrow starting tonight and your first alert forecast.
Here's what's happening where you live. This is ABC 11 eyewitness news.
And we begin here at 11 tonight with new details after a fighter jet had to intercept a private plane that violated restricted airspace while President Trump was on the ground at Fort Bragg.
Good evening. I'm Steve Daniels. Lauren is off tonight. So here's what we know how this all unfolded, according to the director of the Harnet
regional jet port. A twin-engine plane was flying from the Moore County Airport in Southern Pines
over to the Johnston County Regional Airport. But it went into the 30-mile temporary flight restriction
zone because Air Force One was nearby. The pilot did not file a flight plan and then he had to be
intercepted right there by an F-16 jet. And during that interception, the F-16 actually deployed
flares to get the pilot's attention. The small plane eventually landed right there at the
Harnett Regional Airport. The director of that airport had this to say after he spoke with the pilot.
He was actually unaware of the flight restriction, and we gave him the phone number.
He made a phone call, and he was here for a couple hours, and he didn't get any visitors,
but he did take off and fly back to Moore County.
I don't know what he was thinking.
He indicated that a box wasn't checked on his iPad, which would indicate TFR's in place,
so he missed the TFR.
That's the temporary flight restriction because Air Force One was in the area.
We'll have more on the president's visit to Fort Bragg and his message to the soldiers coming up in just a few minutes.
We have some breaking news in the triangle right now.
AT&T is reporting a cell service outage here across the area.
I'm told it's affecting AT&T customers in Durham and the outage could last for a couple of days.
We're working to learn what caused that issue with AT&T.
You can stay with eyewitness news for updates on that.
Tonight the NC State Wolfpack family mourned the loss of one of their most beloved fans.
Grayson Ketchy passed away yesterday.
Grayson gaining love all around the world after forming a very special relationship with a former Ms.
Woof.
People who had a bond with Grayson went to the Bell Tower on the NC State campus tonight to remember the boy who spread so much love and joy and put a smile on everyone's face.
John Dowdy, live now at the Bell Tower at NC State.
John, Grayson meant so much to so many people.
Explain how he's being remembered there in Raleigh tonight.
Steve, everyone we spoke to tonight really just spoke about one thing, the love that Grayson had for those around him.
You saw that love on display here tonight by so many people that loved him.
And that's something his mom thanked the crowd tonight for.
She thanked them for loving her little boy for exactly who he is.
I just feel so grateful to have been able to say that I know in love and was loved by Grayson.
Through tears and hugs.
The NC State Wolfpack gathered tonight to light up the bell tower and the night for Grayson Catchy.
We want to remember him and also allow everyone who loved him to come out because there are so many people that did love him and were,
and just we didn't want to say goodbye when he was saying goodbye.
Grayson's mom said on Instagram that he passed away yesterday at 14 after battling pneumonia.
The Wolfpack and the world fell in love with Grayson after he formed a special relationship with a former Miss Wolf.
Gus Camille. He wants to reach out and hold your hand and give a hug, but even if he did not physically
touch you, like he touched your heart. He found some way to connect even over a phone screen and
social media. Their relationship so strong, he took his first steps on his own into her arms.
Grayson was born premature and nonverbal, but became a fixture at NC State Athletic events over the
years and was known as one of the Wolfpack's biggest fans. If everyone,
that Grayson touched did this, you wouldn't be able to see the stars anywhere in the country
tonight, in the world.
I think K.L. and Jimmy V. met him at the gates.
That Wolfpack pride and love for Grayson on full display in front of the bell tower.
He taught patience. He taught love.
It ripples out so much further than this campus. It ripples out so much further than his
family. And everyone felt the love and the joy that he brings to everyone. He brings to everyone.
to everything he does. Through tears.
I miss him so much.
Grayson's mom with a plea for everyone
whose lives were touched by her son.
And please
just keep carrying her rut with you.
I want everybody who walks away from here tonight
to keep a little bit of that with them always.
Because we all need to live that way. We all need to aspire to be
a little bit more like Grayson.
A lot of emotions here tonight, Steve.
A lot of the people here also said when they
think of Grayson, they think of two things.
his smile and his love for life.
That's what they say. They want the world.
That's how they say they want the world to remember Grayson.
Live here in Raleigh this evening, I'm John Dowding.
ABC 11, eyewitness news.
He had such an extraordinary impact on so many people during his young life.
John, thank you.
Let's take a first look at the weekend weather now.
We're having another night with below freezing temperatures
and then a soaking rain is on the way for Sunday.
Chief meteorologist, Tom Schwenaker,
here with the Valentine's Day weekend forecast.
Fortunately, you're keeping Valentine's Day looking good.
It looks fine for tomorrow, but it does get kind of wet.
As we round out the weekend, we'll talk about that right now.
So here's a look at first alert Doppler net, scanning the sky, is not seeing any rainfall out there tonight.
If we zoom this out and head way out west, you can see.
Shower is now working through parts of Missouri, Texas, Oklahoma.
This is the next system headed our way.
So let's actually look at a wider range model and show you.
There's the system right there.
It's going to advance east as we head through the day on Saturday.
Here's Saturday 1 o'clock right through the Midwest.
We're still nice and dry.
We got great weather for us as we head into.
Saturday. But this system does work its way to the east. And by Sunday morning, we're seeing some
scattered showers out ahead of it. This is Sunday morning 8 a.m. By lunchtime, it's really going to
draw that moisture up into us. And we see a very wet Sunday afternoon. So be ready for a wet
into the weekend. Tonight, though, looking good across the area. Look at the next 11 hours.
And we'll see temperatures in the 30s falling into the 20s. By lunchtime tomorrow, we're back to 49
degrees. We'll talk more about that. Your first alert forecast coming up in just a bit.
Steve. Donnell see you soon. Tonight at Durham Mother is behind bars after police say she killed
one of her young children and tried to kill the other. Andrea Faust is facing charges of first
degree murder and attempted first degree murder. Police say her two small children were found
unresponsive in their home on Chartwell court near NC 98 last night. Neighbors say the children
were brothers and they were under the age of five. I was still very very shot because she
worked a lot in her yard. When I would get my mail, we would talk. I would walk. I would walk
with her as she, you know, kept the kids, you know, she would walk them so that they could get fresh air.
And I just never saw this coming.
Tonight, eyewitness News is working to learn more about that incident and the condition of the surviving child.
Some really emotional moments at the Wake County Justice Center today is a judge sentenced
Headingham mass shooter Austin Thompson to prison terms for the five people he murdered.
of life without the possibility of parole in the custody of the Department of Adult Corrections.
Life without the possibility of parole in the custody of Department of Corrections.
Life without the possibility of parole.
Life without the possibility of parole.
Life without the possibility of parole.
Thompson pleaded guilty to killing all five people, including his own brother in that October of 2022 shooting spree when he was only 15 years old.
Today the judge called Thompson a callous, highly intelligent person.
who understood his actions.
After the sentencing, we heard from the husbands of two of the victims.
When I tried to go to sleep at the end of October 13th,
I knew that Sue wasn't coming home ever,
and I knew that the police had caught the person who killed her
and that he was probably never going to go free.
And the court confirmed that today.
It doesn't bring anyone back, but no.
No. It's a step closer to, just a step closer to everything being over with.
Thompson is now going to be transferred to an adult prison. His attorneys do plan to appeal.
A Carmeling County grand jury is indicted Shana Cloud for first degree murder in the death of her husband.
Retired Greenberry Clinton Bunnell. Benel was last seen on January 27th of 2025.
On February 25th, Sheriff's deputies found his torso in a pond, and the autopsy showed Benel was shot four times.
The rest of his remains have never been found.
Shana Cloud's trial date is expected sometime in 2027.
Right now you can watch the ABC 11 True Crime Green Beret murder documentary.
What happened to Clint Bunnell?
It's on our website, ABC11.com.
Coming up tomorrow, a celebration of life is happening for Joey Adams at Lake Benson Park in Garner.
He was the father of five found shot to death inside his car on timber drive near Van Dura Springs Road in Garner on Monday night.
No one has been arrested.
Garner police have now set up an anonymous tip line in that case.
Today, the CDC giving us an update on where we stand with measles across the country.
According to the agency, just over 900 cases have been confirmed this year.
And here in North Carolina, we've had 15 cases of the measles.
The number of cases has been trending downward nationwide since the second week of January.
But this week, local health officials have warned people of potential measles exposure in Wake, Durham, Orange, and Johnston counties.
President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump went to Fort Bragg today to thank the soldiers involved in the dramatic capture of Venezuelan president,
Nicholas Maduro last month.
Last month we proved this truth once again when some of our greatest soldiers right here
to ever live, frankly, successfully captured the outlaw dictator of Venezuela, Nicholas Maduro.
Soldiers at Fort Bragg actually practiced the extrication in a full-scale replica of Maduro's
compound.
Maduro is now facing federal charges of narco-terrorism and drug trafficking and he's being held
in New York City. And here's how incredible and complex that military operation was to capture Maduro.
After months of preparation, 150 military aircraft launched from 20 different bases and ships into
Venezuela. Nearly a dozen helicopters swept low over the ocean at just 100 feet. At the same time,
warplanes took out air defense systems, allowing the helicopters carrying the Delta Force team from
Fort Bragg to reach Maduro's compound. And when they arrived, they shot and killed several
of Maduro's Cuban guards and then took Maduro and his wife by helicopter out of the country.
No American troops lost their lives in that operation. So to come here on eyewitness news, some new data
shows inflation is going down. And tonight we're breaking down the numbers, especially here in the
South. Also, we have some new clues in the search for Nancy Guthrie, why the sheriff in Tucson
says he's hopeful the case will be solved. And a partial federal government shutdown appears imminent
as lawmakers remain deadlocked over funding. We'll walk you through the impact. They could go into
effect at the top of the hour at midnight. And Don's back checking on the temps near freezing tonight.
Yeah, we're already below freezing in a few spots and we're going to see this as the coldest night
of the next week. Warm us on the way. We'll talk about that coming up next. We are local news.
ABC 11 eyewitness news continues now. In tonight's eye on the economy, the new inflation report out
today shows prices are not going up on the things we buy by as much as they have been in the recent
passed. Across the country, we had this inflation rate of 2.4% in January. But I want you to look at
this yellow line right here. That's us here in the south. It was lower at 1.9%. This dip here
in October you can't pay attention to. That was during the last government shutdown.
And tonight, a partial federal government shutdown is taking effect at midnight. It's happening
as Democrats and Republicans are deadlocked over funding for the Department of Homeland Security.
Here's ABC's Jacqueline Lee with the latest.
tonight the federal government bracing for a possible partial shutdown the third time in president
trump's second term democrats refusing to approve funding for the department of homeland security
unless changes are made to immigration enforcement ice operations receiving considerable blowback
after the minneapolis shooting deaths of american citizens alex prety and rene good we've drawn a hard
line in the sand on behalf of the american people and we're not going to allow the congress to
cross it. Ice needs to be dramatically reformed. Period. Full stop. Democrats are calling for sweeping
reforms, including requiring ICE agents to stop wearing masks, display ID, coordinate with state and
local governments, and obtain warrants signed by a judge before making arrests. Meanwhile,
the halls of Congress sitting empty. Republicans sent lawmakers home for a week-long holiday recess
despite the impending deadline. President Trump telling ABC News is Mary Bruce that he plans to personally
get involved in talks. How long are you supposed to go on? So I am here to protect law enforcement
and law, our great police and ICE and Border Patrol and everybody. I'm here to protect them
because they're protecting us. Even if the shutdown happens, ICE operations will continue,
thanks to $75 billion in funding from the big, beautiful bill that passed with GOP-only
support during the summer. But without congressional action, most of the department's 272,000 employees,
including the Coast Guard, TSA and FEMA, would be required to continue working without pay.
Jacqueline Lee, ABC News, Los Angeles.
Now the latest in the search for Nancy Guthrie in Arizona.
Investigators say they've recovered DNA from Nancy's property that does not belong to her or anyone close to her.
The Pima County Sheriff in Tucson says they're still working to identify whose DNA it is.
He says investigators collected DNA from several gloves and other potential pieces of evidence
during an expanded search within a 10-mile radius of Nancy's home.
The sheriff added he's hopeful investigators are.
getting closer to solving the case.
Tonight here in our area, the Johnson County Sheriff's Office is looking for the person who
impersonated a deputy before scamming a man out of $5,000.
The 53-year-old victim from Selma told investigators he received a phone call from a blocked
number.
The caller claimed the victim missed jury duty and there's now a warrant for his arrest.
Shortly after the victim received a second phone call, but this number perfectly
resembled the number for the sheriff's office and that is a common practice for scammers
who have the technology to spoof real numbers.
The victim believed the claims were real and paid the scammer nearly $5,000 through a Bitcoin machine.
The sheriff's office is now warning people jury duty scams are very real,
and law enforcement never demands payment of any kind over the phone.
We have another positive sign that North Carolina has turned the corner on the flu season.
WakeMed is lifting flu restrictions for visitors on Monday.
Children of all ages who are not sick can return to all hospital nursing units and patient care areas across WakeMed.
The hospital system says a decrease in people sick with respiratory illnesses.
is behind that returns in normal visitation.
The visitor restrictions have been in place since December.
All right, Don's back with us right now.
We have a good-looking Valentine's Day.
Things looking pretty bright,
and the temperature's looking good tomorrow for Valentine's.
Yeah, great day to get outside with your sweetie or with your kids or with your dog or whatever you might be doing.
Whatever you're doing, right?
Exactly.
Even if you don't have a Valentine, it's still a nice day to get outside.
We're taking a look at the seven-day forecast.
We'll be in the 20s to start today.
We'll end the day in the 60s.
Sunday a soaking rain 51, Monday 56, Tuesday 65. We're in the 70s next week. You know it's Friday night. That's when we do your flapjack forecast because we only do it on Friday nights and it's going to be a good morning to make your sweetie some breakfast or maybe the kids some breakfast. Temperatures will be in the 20s. So we start off chilly. But by lunchtime, we're up into the 50s and we will see 60s in the afternoon. Live look on first alert Doppler net tonight. Scanning the sky is not seeing any rainfall out there.
and live into the city of medicine. Beautiful night in downtown Durham, 35 right now, mainly clear on our
sensor there and winds are calm. Let's go Manio to Murphy tonight. Check the state and the temperatures
across the region. It's cold down at the beach. One of those rare nights where Mantio, Manio matches
Moon at 28, 36 over in the triad, 35 here. 20s up in Chase City, 32 down at ECU and 31 in Lumberton.
Some 40s down south, 45 in Augusta, Georgia.

26 our overnight low in Raleigh, 24 in Durham. Normal, typical seasonal average is 34.
We'll be eight degrees below that tonight. 25 in Fayville and Sanford, you're flirting with the teens.
Satellite radar composite shows that next system out west. Showers now through parts of Kansas and Missouri.
This is what's going to race across the country and get in here on Sunday.
You can see it working off to the east and it will work closer.
to us as we get into Sunday.
Let's time it out for you.
We'll zoom it in and get a better look.
So this is Sunday morning 6 a.m.
We're starting to see some scattered showers.
Some of you may not see rain all morning.
As a matter of fact, this is 10 a.m.
and it's still relatively dry.
But by the afternoon, there come the showers
and could even have a couple of rumbles of thunder.
It's going to be cold, though.
Look at those temperatures.
Only in the 40s.
A cold rain that lingers all the way into Sunday night.
An isolated shower could last into Monday morning.
Forecast looks like this for tomorrow. Before the rain, it's a great day.
61 in Raleigh, Durham will top 61, 63 in Fayetteville.
Your first alert, seven-day forecast shows those temperatures in the 50s on Sunday, that's soaking rain.
We're clearing those skies out as we head through your Veterans Day, or excuse me, President's Day on Monday, 56.
Tuesday, Tuesday, 65. Ash Wednesday will be 70 with lots of clouds.
And those 70s hang on Thursday into Friday.
a great finish to next week.
So over the next seven days, tonight,
Steve, the last night below freezing,
and we stay above freezing into next weekend.
Yeah, feeling more like spring.
Toward the end of next week.
All right, Don, thanks.
