Right now, live coverage from your local news leader, preparing you for tomorrow starting tonight and your first alert forecast.
Here's what's happening where you live. This is ABC 11 eyewitness news.
We're covering breaking news right now at 11. A large police response to a shooting in Henderson on Wester Avenue.
That's about 45 minutes northeast of the triangle. Jamis Price will join us live there from the scene in just a moment.
But we begin with the latest on the winter storm that's taking shape for this weekend.
joining us here for the news at 11. I'm Steve Daniels. And I'm Lauren Johnson. We're confident that
we're going to see some kind of significant weather event this week. The exact timing, impact,
and type of precipitation are so up in the air for now. Don's been watching all the models very
closely and says we're still days away from any projections. But Don, what can you tell us tonight?
Well, we'll show you the latest models right now, not hold anything back from you. This is the
European model by Saturday night 10 p.m. is showing snow and ice. What's changed since earlier
today as we go through Saturday night and pulls in warmer air and that would change us over to more of an icing event.
It's a different story when we look at the American model. It starts the snow a lot earlier. This would be early in the day on Saturday.
It keeps it mainly snow till Sunday evening where it does change it over to some ice or sleep before it finally exits the region.
Still lots of question marks, but here's what we know. There's going to be a frontal boundary that shapes up off our coast.
We've got Arctic air up to the north. And those are the two.
of the ingredients that we need.
So available moisture, plenty of it with that low pulling it right off the ocean.
Abundant cold air, yes, that high will be shoving it right down into us and keeping the cold air in place.
But the two question marks still are the position of the low.
Where it sets up, if it's out to see more, that would bring more snow and cold air in.
If it pushes inland, that brings more ice or even rain and also the type of precipitation.
Will be rain, sleet, freezing rain, snow, lots of choices with this system.
But we do know every day this week, the models have shown that potential for a winter storm.
So that's why we're first alerting you to it tonight.
I think Sunday into Monday, regardless of what works through, will be tough travel.
And if you can change your plans right now, it's a good idea for Sunday into Monday.
We're dry out there tonight.
Live look at first alert Doppler net to taking a live look into Durham.
Mutual Tower sky cam is 27.
It is cold out there tonight.
A look at the overnight.
Those clear skies will drop us into the teens and spots.
We'll talk more about this cold night tonight.
A nice warm up before that system gets here.
And of course, the all important weekend forecast coming up in just a bit.
Lauren. Important it is, Don, thank you.
Eyewitness News will bring you all the latest weather updates throughout the week.
Download the free ABC 11 mobile app for the latest watches and warnings.
You can also check Doppler Net and that seven-day forecast at any time.
Now let's get you to the scene of the breaking news on full in advance county.
Police on the scene of a shooting in Henderson on Western Avenue.
James Price is live on that scene.
James there was a large law enforcement response earlier tonight.
nearly a dozen evidence markers there near a parked car.
What else are you learning or seeing at this hour?
Lauren and Steve, those investigators still going through this area just behind me here.
They have their flashlights out and they were going from side to side on each side of this street and looking at cars.
You can see those evidence markers that you mentioned there.
Nearly a dozen evidence markers here and you can see those cruisers here.
Also something to note here.
It is very quiet out.
No one is outside, but you would think with a shooting and to see this presence that there will be more neighbors out here.
Now, our one of our breaking news crew members that came out here earlier today, they told us that they heard a boom, two loud booms.
And then when they came outside, this is what they noticed, that heavy police presence here.
So we do know that this was a shooting, but we are still trying to work out those details on exactly who may have been shot.
if there is a suspect at this hour, but we are pressing Henderson police for more information.
Of course, once we get that information, we'll share with you.
Lauren and Steve.
All right, we've been asking questions all night.
We'll wait for new info.
Jemise Price.
Thank you.
New tonight, hundreds of people attended a rally that started in Moore Square and led to a march
through the streets of downtown rally.
We had Chopper 11 overhead as it was unfolding.
A national group called the Party for Socialism and Liberation put it together to focus on
ice raids across the country.
It comes as today marks one.
year since President Trump began his second term.
Michael Perchick talked with people who showed up there this evening in downtown Raleigh.
No justice.
No peace.
Among the crowd Tuesday, Mike Kalik had his thoughts on his home state of Minnesota.
If they can go out in ten below weather, I can come out in 30 degrees and support, you know, stopping ice.
The Army veteran now lives in the triangle, but is still disturbed by the scenes unfolding there.
Mary Gaines also voiced concerns over ice tactics.
It's too violent.
It's too sweeping.
It's being done by people who have absolutely this much training.
Hundreds of people marching down South Wilmington Street towards the old capital.
A heavy presence of law enforcement.
Several streets shut down from this protest, which began just a couple hours ago near Moore Square.
While this event featured the president's detractors, Congressman Mark Harris praised the first year of the administration.
President Trump has probably done more than.
any other Republican president over the first 365 days that he's been in office.
Harris cited improved inflation figures and significantly decreased border crossings as successes,
defending the work of immigration enforcement.
We need to allow them to do their job and to take these criminals off the street.
We just saw not far from me in Rowan County, where a guy had driving drunk had killed two people.
He's referring to a crash earlier this month in which authorities alleged Juan Aguilar was under the influence when he hit and killed two people.
Aguilar, now facing an ICE detainer, is charged with DWI and felony death by vehicle.
This was a peaceful gathering in March.
We have reached out to the city of Raleigh and Raleigh, pleased to learn how many officers were on patrol and if a permit was filed by organizers, though not heard back at this time.
Michael Perchick, ABC 11, eyewitness news.
Michael, thank you. New here at 11. Wake County will continue to provide students with regular school lunches, even when they've run out of money to pay for those. During a meeting tonight, the Wake County School Board chose not to resume the practice of serving an alternative meal of only fruits, vegetables, and water to students who have run out of meal money. School administrators had made the request because the student meal debt had risen to more than $152,000 since the district started using donations to cover unpaid meal costs. Administrators will now have to figure out a way to cover the
meal debt. School nutrition programs are supposed to, by law, be financially self-supporting.
A Raleigh teenager is expected to plead guilty tomorrow in a Wake County courtroom to going on a
shooting spree in his neighborhood back in 2022. Austin Thompson was just 15 years old when police
say he killed five people, including his brother and a Raleigh police officer in the Headingham
community. His legal team said in a court filing, Austin understands he can never change what happened,
but he hopes that pleading as charged and moving into sentencing will allow.
allow for the victims and community and his family to be spared to trial.
Robert Steele, whose fiancé was killed, tells eyewitnesses the guilty plea is long overdue,
and it'll offer closure.
Testimony continues in the trial of Isaiah Ross, who's pleading not guilty in the double
murder of two Orange County teenagers.
Nearly four years ago, the prosecution continued through its witness list today that includes
a firearms expert and the man who led law enforcement to Isaiah Ross.
Christian Sykes testified at Ross confessed to him to killing Lyrick Woods and Devin Clark
in the car after claiming Devin pointed the gun at him.
The conversation between Christian and law enforcement was recorded and played for the courtroom.
If you have time to be wrestling for a gun and it's going off and then more time for you to get the gun and then shoot him,
why would somebody just continue to sit in the back seat?
What did he do afterwards?
He just said he dumped the bodies.
The defense questioned Christian, including asking where exactly those teens were killed.
testified more about the evidence, including the phone numbers connected with the incident.
The prosecution says they have two witnesses left once the prosecution rest its case.
The defense will begin to make its case. Tomorrow, Isaiah Ross will decide whether or not he will
testify in his own defense. So to come here on eyewitness news tonight, some people who live in
Raleigh's North Hills neighborhood are not happy after the city council approves a rezoning
request from a developer who's been pushing to build taller towers in the area.
Plus, docs taking a tumble today as President Trump reignited his trade war tensions with Europe,
Amid his ambitions to take control of Greenland.
We'll break down what's expected to happen on Wall Street when the market's open tomorrow.
Don, you're checking the temps right now, and it's going to be a really chilly morning tomorrow.
That is cold out there already. Everybody below freezing tonight, we'll see teens in spots.
We'll talk more about that and a first alert to quite a warm up by Thursday.
We're talking 60s in your seven-day forecast.
Come on up.
North Hills is about to undergo a facelift of sorts as four brand-new towers are planned in Midtown Raleigh.
But the plans have come with some gripes about traffic and construction.
congestion in an already dense part of our city. And today in a six to two vote, the city council
approve this rezoning request. And now Kane Realty can build towers up to 37 stories high.
Jimmy's Price has reaction from concerned neighbors and not part of Raleigh.
Janet Farrell has lived in her North Hills neighborhood since 1961. She's seen a change over the last
65 years, some she supported, and others she did not. But the latest proposal for development is
where she draws the line. I'd say it enough is enough. Kane Realty plans to build four towers
right across from her home near Six Forks Road and Lasseter Mill Road. I am appalled. It would
destroy the aesthetics of the neighborhood. That is a 6-2 vote. Thank you. Today, the Raleigh City Council
cleared the way for developers to move forward with their plans and approve their rezoning request,
which allows them to build taller buildings upwards of 37 stories and parts of North Hills.
It gives the council facts and they just don't listen.
It's been a contentious battle between neighborhood groups who oppose the plan and the developer.
One of the concerns brought up by Larry Halfaunt, who chairs the Midtown Citizens Advisory Council,
is the lack of sunlight blocked by the proposed towers.
It's just wrong, and those neighborhoods will suffer for years because they've lost their sun.
light. 37-story building will cast a shadow covering a full neighborhood on the other side of the
road. And the other issue, traffic. Larry says it's already busy now and can only imagine future
congestion. And if they're going to keep approving development without infrastructure, without spending
any money for the last 20 years on the roads around North Hills, it's not going to get better.
Came Realty came to the table with an amended proposal that now provides a $500,000 contribution to the city to help build a new fire station for the Midtown area and another $1 million contribution to the city's affordable housing fund.
So everyone in town benefits when housing gets built because it helps us lower rents, it helps us lower housing costs.
Jen Truman was one of the supporters of the project who showed up at the council meeting today.
She says the future development is a benefit to the entire city.
We really have to think about the future and all the people that we want to welcome into our city and we need more housing to do that.
Kane Realty hasn't said just yet when they plan to start construction.
In Raleigh, Jemis Price, ABC 11, eyewitness news.
Jemise, thanks.
Tonight President Trump is flying to Europe for the World Economic Forum in Switzerland and the escalating showdown between the Trump administration and our NATO allies over the fate of Greenland will be a dominant topic of conversation as leaders gathers.
this week there in Davos. President Trump says there's, quote, no going back on his desires
to take control of the autonomous Danish territory. Trump is warning eight NATO allies to get out
of his way when it comes to acquiring Greenland. And he says any pushback will result in 10%
tariffs starting February 1st and rising to 25% in June. NATO's warning to President Trump,
his aggression towards Greenland is threatening the alliance with the U.S.
We are in a very bad position. At the moment, we're dependent on the United States. So we chose to
lenient, but now so many red lines are being crossed.
President Trump's clash with European leaders is causing some problems with the stock market as well.
We know that Greenland rattled the stock markets today.
They had the worst day since October. Stock futures for tomorrow suggest the markets will go
up during the trading day.
All right, let's talk to Don again, dive into this forecast for the weekend.
He's talking about precipitation that could run for basically 24 hours from Saturday into Sunday
evening. And he showed us those models, the European model and the American model.
We have to hope the Americans get this right, huh?
At least this time.
Yeah, yeah.
Right.
Yeah, it's had a rough go this year.
The American model has not done well, but it is showing an also more snow event.
We're going to show that to you in just a moment.
First, let's talk about the seven-day forecast.
And before we get to that weekend, we get a nice warm-up on the way.
Look at Thursday, 60 degrees in spots.
Gorgeous day out there.
Friday could see some scattered showers.
And then the weekend right now, that's a first alert day.
Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
That entire period could be probably.
Let's tell you why. First, we'll look at the models, and you can see why Steve mentioned that European model as we go through this whole thing.
It paints more of an ice picture, sleet and ice that would hold down the snowfall totals.
The American model keeps it more snow through the triangle.
It does bring ice to the south, though.
But still, this is just one tool.
This is not a forecast.
So here's what we know tonight and what I can pass along to you.
I'm confident we will see extreme cold, high risk for extreme cold.
We're talking overnight low single digits possibly.
Snow, sleet or ice, medium confidence in that, you know, we're going to see some wintry precipitation,
but how much and what kind and who sees it?
It's still big question marks for us.
The potential, though, with any precipitation, whether it's snow or rain to refreeze by Monday morning,
icy roads and travel, I think that's a higher risk too.
More confidence in that, so do not plan on traveling Sunday into Monday, at least right now.
And then power outages.
That will all depend.
If this isn't all of ice event, we could see significant power outages.
Or if it's a heavy snow event, it could bring down some too.
So we'll be watching that.
Not a lot of confidence yet on that, but certainly that's where we stand tonight.
And we'll continue to update you as we get more information in.
Thursday night would be the best bet of putting out some accumulations and really knowing where and what is going to fall.
Tonight we don't have anything falling from the skies.
It's dry out there.
Live look at it.
RDU plane just arriving there.
27 degrees right now, clear skies and the winds are calm.
Maneota Murphy tonight, 20s across the state.
The only 30 is down in Charlotte.
They're at 33, but one of those rare nights where Boone's at 27, we're at 27.
ECU is actually colder than Boone at 25 tonight.
Overnight, we'll see those temperatures into the teens for lows.
19 Raleigh, 21 Fayetteville, 22 in Clinton.
Let's talk about tomorrow.
And satellite radar composite is clear and dry tonight.
that's going to allow those temperatures to fall through the overnight.
Models are a little warm on this.
It's saying 27.
We're already there.
I think it's off on temperatures.
But I think it does a nice job with the clouds as we head through the afternoon.
We'll see those temperatures surging into the upper 40s, low 50s.
Then Thursday, those wind swinging out of the south and west.
We'll start today in the 40s.
And by Thursday afternoon, some 60s showing up on the border.
A nice warm up as we head toward the middle to the latter part of the work week.
Tomorrow, though, 50 degrees, Raleigh, 49, Durham, 53 in Fayetteville, a mix of clouds and sunshine.
Back to that seven-day forecast.
And the warm air on Thursday, Saturday right now, 33.
One of the major models shows snow earlier in the day.
One of them doesn't show until Saturday night.
So just because it'll start sometime on Saturday, it's a first alert day.
Sunday looks like a wintry mix possible throughout the day.
And Monday 33, it all refreezes Sunday night and Monday.
Don, it's 26. Why wouldn't this just be snow? Well, what we're, what's one of the hardest things to
detect is the warm air in the middle part of the atmosphere. So it starts to snow and then it melts.
And that's a very hard thing for the models to comprehend. So that's why wintry mix is a possible
as we head into Sunday guys. All right, Don, we know you'll keep an eye on it and keep us updated.
Thank you. We are just getting an update on the breaking news we told you about in Henderson.
An update on that shooting. This is coming from police. We now know three people inside that white SUV.
were shot. The victims have been identified as 24-year-old Quincy Rodwell, 24-year-old Kenya
knot and a seven-month-old baby as well. The police say a dark SUV pulled up to their white
SUV and opened fire. The people in that dark SUV are out there on the run. That's all we
know right now is a dark SUV open fire on that vehicle. And we do the Kenya Knott and the baby
were taken to a medical facility. They are alert and aware. Quincy Rodwell was hit by a bullet as
well, but did not need any other treatment. Henderson police on the lookout for the people in that
dark SUV who opened fire shooting three people in their city tonight. Still ahead here on Iowa
