This is ABC 11 eyewitness news. And the big story, the breaking news here on eyewitness news tonight. Our Carolina hurricanes are now just one win away from their second Stanley Cup and franchise history. The team beating the Vegas Golden Knights by a final score of 42 in game five at the Lenovo Center. was another history-making game. Jordan Stahl becoming the first player since 1973 to score in five straight Stanley Cup final
Starting point is 00:00:41 games and Brandon Bussie with an outstanding performance stopping all but two of the shots he faced tonight. And our eyewitness news camera is live right outside the Cain's locker room there. We are waiting to get reaction from the guys to their big win tonight. We'll be taking you inside the locker room. We'll hear from the guys at the Lenovo Center here in the minutes ahead. Hi everyone. Thanks for staying with us for all the celebration. Eyewitness News will bring it to you live across Raleigh. I'm Steve Daniels.
Starting point is 00:01:09 And I'm Lauren Johnson. Get this. When the Stanley Cup final is tied after four games, the team goes on to win the series 75% of the time. Statistics in our favorites. We love it. Right? We love it. We have live team coverage of the Canes big win tonight. Trayvon Miles here to break down all the action. Tom George is at the Red Hat amphitheater where hundreds of Keynes fans watch the game on the big screen there. And Michael Perchick inside Lenovo, getting reaction from fans. All right, but let's kick things off here with Jemise Price. She is right outside the Lenovo Center with the Caniaks who are celebrating right now.
Starting point is 00:01:41 Jamis. Steve and Lauren, we are just one win away. New Keynes is a party out here. I'm gonna send it over to Michael Perch. You are in. Yeah, James, the message here is pretty simple for those who have their tarps on or tarps off. We want the cup. We want the cup.
Starting point is 00:03:02 We want the cap, baby. TARP's on but kind of talks off as well. There you go. This is a PG-13 show. We'll keep it that way. A team has won two games in a row. Carolina largely dominating this one from middle of the first period on,
Starting point is 00:03:34 when it's one, four to two. The hope is we can close it out, out in Las Vegas. What do we go? Sunday. A great win, yes, absolutely. Sunday, it's done. Not back from running. Done. Done.
Starting point is 00:03:47 Done. Done it. That's it. He heard it. pretty honest man. All right, we're getting it done Sunday. We're getting it done Sunday. Let's hope so. It's not. This will be the loudest house in the NHL once again. All right, look, we're getting ready for game six on Sunday out in Vegas. You see how the Caniaks are reacting now? Just wait until we win the cup on Sunday night.
Starting point is 00:04:14 You can understand this excitement, though, 20 years in the making, so we get it. Absolutely. All right, you know, tickets to the Lenovo Center for a Stanley Cup final game are really tough to come by. So Keynes fans packed local watering holes all over the triangle to cheer on the team if they didn't have tickets. They create their own parties there, breaking out in chance, high-fiving on the edge of their seats, watching the action. Our cameras capturing the packed house at Bull McCabe's on Main Street downtown Durham, the pub turning into sort of an extension of the Lenovo Center. And from Raleigh to Durham, Keynes fans were out in full force all across the triangle cheering on the team. And the official watch party in Raleigh was moved over to the Red Hat Amphitheater tonight. George is there. Packed house. That place was going crazy. And Tom, it was really fun to see
Starting point is 00:05:09 they'd cut to the Red Hat Amphitheater for the ABC National Broadcast. People all across the country saw the action there at the Red Hat Amphitheater tonight. Yeah, that's right. Excited to be on the big screen here at the Red Hat Amphitheater. And if you couldn't be at Lenovo, this was probably other best place to be right now. A lot of people heading to the after party, I guess. You know, it's hard to clear it out, but a lot of excitement out here. Of course, Vegas scoring first, but then just making error after error. And Carolina taking advantage of some of those power plays and people just erupting as they got goal after goal. And some fans obviously very excited.
Starting point is 00:05:47 Also really excited to see Sebastian Aho getting his first goal of this series. Ajo fetched twice. What the heck? I was telling my buddies earlier. We either need to keep Aikl out. Or we need Aho and Svenz. Both happen, man. I want all of the USA to hear this.
Starting point is 00:06:15 Raleigh is a... Did you hear him? Did you hear him? I think he made himself loud and clear. Raleigh is a hockey town. And, you know, I got to admit, I have... I worked in Las Vegas. They are also a hockey town. But today, it was the canes,
Starting point is 00:06:32 notching the win. You know, great to see it. And they're going to be heading back to Vegas for game six. But obviously, exciting stuff here. And Raleigh, an undisputed hockey town. guys. All right. We got it done and that's all we needed to do. They took care of business is what we know happened. Tom George, thank you. And a very special guest helped get the Caniacs hyped up there for game five with a watch party at the Red Hat amphitheater. Look at that. Dewan Hogarth decked out
Starting point is 00:06:57 in his best Keynes gear as the MC for tonight's big festivities there. And I know everybody had a great time out there at the Red Hat amphitheater for the official watch party tonight. All right. So right now, the Cains lead the series three games to two. Again, as we say one win away from winning the Stanley Cup. Trey's been traveling with the team. Vegas, he's back in Raleigh. He's in the locker room right now talking to players. Let's check in with him and see what is happening
Starting point is 00:07:22 in the locker room right now. Yeah, Trey. It's been fun. We're playing hockey at the highest level. I feel like I give you guys the same answer, so I'm sorry, it might be boring in that sense, but that's just who I am, right? It's been fun to be a part of it.
Starting point is 00:07:38 Rendez's last couple times, defensive and say to play better in front of the goal. How do you assess how they play tonight? I think we're all our worst critic in a way. You know, I think our decor battles a lot every night. We battle hard. Mistakes happen because that's the nature of the game and they're a good team. I loved our effort tonight, our sacrifice, the block shots, the pick up sticks.
Starting point is 00:08:01 You need those things to win games. Goalie Brandon Bussie guys stepping in to the fire coming out with a win. Cains are now one win away from a Stanley Cup title, guys. Back to you. Such a huge couple of games for Brandon Bussy. You know, he played, he was big time during the regular season. I think 32 wins during the regular season. And then they put Freddie Anderson in for the playoffs,
Starting point is 00:08:27 and Bussie's been in for the past two games and coming up huge for the Kings. Yeah, and it's amazing to hear his story undrafted, playing in the minor leagues, trying to work his way up, 27 years old, huge game tonight. And when you're out at Lenovo, fans go crazy over Bussie. He is the star out there right now in the net, no doubt about it. For sure. We'll get back with Trey after these interviews and check back in with him for sports. All right, the Lenovo Center will be hosting another watch party for game six on Sunday. Tickets go on sale tomorrow at 3 p.m. with a presale for season ticket holders.
Starting point is 00:08:56 They'll set you back $10, but the good news, the parking is free and all that money's donated to the Keynes Foundation. And if you can't make it out to the Lenovo Center, you can catch all of the game action right here on ABC 11 puck drop 8 o'clock Sunday out at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. And don't forget, tune in to our pre-game special chasing the cup at Air. Sunday night, 7 o'clock on ABC 11, Disney Plus, or wherever you stream. All right, still to come here at 11 o'clock. An investigation is underway after a deadly afternoon shooting in Durham. Also, could a deal with Iran be signed this weekend? President Trump appears to think so, why he says he called off scheduled strikes against that country tonight.
Starting point is 00:09:34 And new water restrictions in Durham as drought conditions worsen in the triangle will break down what you need to know before they go into effect on Monday. And Don, you were out there in the heat at the last. Lenovo Center. I hope you've cooled off. What are the temps looking like outside right now? You know what? It is still brutal out there. Temperatures out there right now feeling like a late May afternoon. We're still in the mid-80s across the region. It's going to be just as hot tomorrow. A heat advisory again in effect from 11 until 8 tomorrow with feels like up around 105. We'll talk more about that in your first alert forecast and some rain chances coming up. This father's day start with a question like where did dad's story begin? Ancestry

With Wayfair, there's no what-ef. Just style you love and quality you can trust. Visit Wayfair.cair, every style, every home. Let's take you back live into the Kane's locker room. Captain Jordan Stahl is talking about the game,
Starting point is 00:11:04 and he got a goal, one of the four goals tonight there. Pretty proud of his team, I'm sure. Let's listen in. I'm brand him down, and I think our decor was exceptional. Jordan, sometimes you're the guy who gets a lot of credit on the defense event and not the goals, and it's kind of the other way around. Sebastian, he gets one tonight. He just talk about, he tells us a lot about the importance of being even or better,
Starting point is 00:11:27 and it's not just the play on the puck and scoring goals. Can you kind of articulate that about him? Yeah, I mean, it's about winning games, right? And you got to find ways to contribute. And, you know, you're not going to score every night. And at times, you've got to find ways to slow them down. and just basically contribute any way you can on both sides of puck. And I think our forwards, our decor, everyone tonight was hounding the puck hard,
Starting point is 00:11:59 defending well, and playing desperate when we needed to and finding ways to get a win. William Carlson leaves the injury. It's the captain Jordan Stahl with another goal in the Stanley Cup final, guys. Back to you. Okay, Trey Miles, in the locker room with the team as they are celebrating their win, dissecting the win, how they got it, looking ahead to Vegas and going into game five Sunday out there when the Cains do have the chance to win the Stanley Cup. More from the locker room as we get it here in the minutes ahead.
Starting point is 00:12:28 We are waiting to learn the identity of a man who was shot and killed in Durham this afternoon. It happened around 430 near the intersection of Cornwallis Road and South Roxborough Street. Durham police tell us they were called to the scene and found the man who'd been shot. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. Investigators are still working to found out exactly what led up to that shooting. so far, no word on if they've identified any suspects. Breaking tonight a possible de-escalation in the Middle East, as President Trump says, he's canceled airstrikes against Iran. And tonight negotiations with Tehran are showing some progress. The president pulling back on strikes,
Starting point is 00:13:01 he said he was planning tonight, saying after some high-level talks, details of a potential new deal have been approved by the Iranian leadership. No details yet about what that entails, but ABC's Melissa Adon is tracking the details. President Trump today canceling new military strikes against Iran after signaling the U.S. would launch a major escalation in the war. We just made a great settlement of the war with Iran. And we're going to be subject to finalization of documents. We should get done over the next few days. Tensions across the Middle East had been flaring with U.S. and Iranian forces exchanging attacks earlier this week.
Starting point is 00:13:41 The president posting on social media that discussions with Iran, quote, have been brought to the highest level of leadership and approved. This comes after Trump vowed to attack Iran, very hard tonight following days of strikes between the U.S. and Iran. ABC's Rachel Scott asking the president. You have said before that Iran and the United States were close to a deal. It has not happened yet. Why are you so convinced that this time is different? Because they've taken a pounding. they've taken a pounding like very few people could take
Starting point is 00:14:13 and they want to make the deal a lot more than I do. The now canceled strikes were in response to the downing of an American Apache attack helicopter this weekend, which Trump says was shot down by an Iranian drone. A source telling ABC News, a deal between the U.S. and Iran is now very close after mediators hit breakthroughs. Trump maintains the current cease fire with Iran is still holding
Starting point is 00:14:36 and now insisting a real peace deal with the regime, is fully negotiated and that were just days away from the war ending. It's something that's going to get done. And if it doesn't get done for any reason, which I can't imagine that not happening. They want to sign it as much as I do or more. Melissa, Don, ABC News, Los Angeles. Melissa, thanks. Let's take a look at the latest drought monitor for North Carolina.
Starting point is 00:14:58 It's right here and it shows conditions are getting worse across the triangle. All of Wake County remains in the extreme drought category with nearly a fifth of the county, now in the exceptional drought category. Meanwhile, nearly all of Durham County, as you can see here, falls into that exceptional drought category. The drought update coming is the city of Durham announces stage two water restrictions going into effect on Monday.
Starting point is 00:15:17 Under stage two restrictions, outdoor spray irrigation is prohibited, but hand watering is allowed. No car washing is allowed except at commercial car washes. Cleaning driveway, sidewalks, or building exteriors is also prohibited. You also cannot refill fountains, ponds or pools unless you're using water recycling systems.
Starting point is 00:15:33 Only restaurants can serve water only if you ask for water, specifically again, those restrictions in Durham go into effect on month. day. The dangerous heat, not doing much to help our drought conditions. We've shattered another record at RDE today, topping out at 101 degrees. The old record of 100 degrees stood for more than 100 years. It was set way back in 1914, and it's going to be even hotter tomorrow. All right, the big focus is now game six for the canes out in Las Vegas. You two were out there going into game five tonight with fans at the Lenovo Center. I have a feeling it was hotter here, felt hotter than probably in Vegas. I think you make a good point. So I,
Starting point is 00:16:09 looked okay you're close our feels like temperature today went to about 105 they were actually 108 on the strip today okay okay but it's that dry heat so the humidity's lower so I bet we did feel warmer yeah Sunday night for the game and the party and all the viewing parties could get wet we'll talk about that just a moment let's talk about the one big thing you got to take away from tonight's forecast and more dangerous heat on the way just know that tomorrow is gonna be just as hot as today, if not hotter. There is a heat advisory entire viewing area from 11 a.m. until 8. That's the peak time of heating when you want to stay out of the sun. Now, notice I mentioned
Starting point is 00:16:48 that chance of storm Sunday night. It's only 30 percent and hopefully it doesn't pop up over the viewing parties. We really see those showers start to crank as we get into Monday with scattered showers and storms on the way. Let me step off camera real quick and adjust a few things on this live look at First Alert Doppler net tonight scanning the skies and we are seeing dry conditions out there. Those dry conditions will stay with us all night long. Some nice weather on the way through the overnight as far as storms go. I know everybody needs rain. Unfortunately, we're just not going to see a lot of it tonight. A look at that forecast for tonight and temperatures will drop down into the 70s, 75 Raleigh, 74 in Clinton, 72 Roxborough and 73 in Rhoneau Crapids.
Starting point is 00:17:30 Satellite radar composite shows the showers that were out there drying out some nasty storms, big tornado south of Chicago tonight. That line is advancing east, but unfortunately that rain stays away. Your first alert predictor forecast model. As we go through the overnight into tomorrow morning, notice 7 o'clock. You'll wake up with temperatures by 7 already near 80 degrees. So we're starting hot tomorrow. And then it gets even warmer as we get up around 100 again tomorrow afternoon. There will be just like today some pop-up showers. You get under one. It'll cool We often will put down heavy rain, but not everybody will see the rain. And then as we get into Saturday, one or two isolated showers in the afternoon.
Starting point is 00:18:09 Sunday looks better for a chance at some rain. So here's the boundary getting closer tomorrow. And then as we head Saturday into Sunday, it falls apart. We start to see some more heat leaking back in. This is the one we have to watch for Monday. That's what will bring the better chance for rain as we head toward Monday. Forecast for tomorrow looks like this 102 Raleigh, 100 in Durham. 99 tomorrow in Fay.
Starting point is 00:18:33 It fell. So another hot day on tap. Back to that seven-day forecast. And we'll show you that heat working in Saturday, 95. It won't be bad earlier in the day. So if you're headed out to the flag ceremony in Durham, sponsored by the Rotary, ABC 11 is a proud sponsor of that. Sunday, 98, Monday, we're back into the 90s and 80s for the middle part of next week. But one more really hot day with that heat advisory all day long, guys. All right, Don, thank you.
Starting point is 00:18:59 The Rotary Club of Durham wants to invite you to a special Flag Day celebration this weekend. Yeah, it'll feature a flag ceremony, patriotic music, family activities, and also remarks from community leaders and local veterans. The event gets underway at 9 a.m. Saturday morning at HubRTP. It's the culmination of the Rotary Club's Flags for Heroes Project. It honors veterans and first responders, health care workers, teachers, and other heroes with a field full of American flags. ABC 11 is proud to be sponsoring the Flags for Heroes event. Starting point is 00:19:36 And back live to the celebration happening at the Lenovo Center. Look at those Keynes fans fired up about that Game 5 win tonight. As we know, the Keynes lead the series three games to two going into Game 6 out in Vegas on Sunday. People celebrating like these guys all across the triangle right now. The ABC. The company is hoping for a valuation of $1.75 trillion, and that would make it the largest IPO of all time
Starting point is 00:20:19 and make SpaceX one of the top ten richest companies in the world. SpaceX is hoping to raise as much as $75 billion, bringing in fresh money for the Texas-based company. A successful IPO could also make Elon Musk, the world's first trillionaire, If the company achieves that target valuation, Musk would accrue hundreds of millions of dollars in... Back to Sin City. We understand her flying out on Saturday, meaning they get to sleep at home tonight and tomorrow night before heading back out West. It's always good to be in your own bed. Trey, thank you.
