Starting point is 00:00:01 Right now, live coverage from your local news leader, preparing you for tomorrow starting tonight and your first alert forecast. Here's what's happening where you live. This is ABC 11 eyewitness news. Game one of the Stanley Cup final, not disappointing from every goal scored to every save to all the heart-stopping moments. The action there on the ice in Raleigh tonight was amazing. But in the end, the Carolina Hurricanes fall short, losing five. to four to Vegas. We have Chopper 11 flying over the Lenovo Center in Raleigh right now, capturing the moments after the game. Cain's fans leaving there feeling a little bit disappointed.
Starting point is 00:00:47 We are going to be hearing from Cain's players in the locker room getting their reaction to game one coming up here in the minutes ahead. Thanks for joining us here for the news at 11. I'm Steve Daniels. And I'm Lauren Johnson. Not the game won this team or the fans had hoped it would be, but we know tonight was just the beginning. We have live team coverage of game one,
Starting point is 00:01:02 our team of reporters in the thick of the excitement with fans as they watch this back and forth scoring nail. bite or play out. Kate Rodgerson inside the Lenovo Center for each dramatic moment. But we start tonight with James Price, who was at the watch party outside Lenovo Center. Jamise, the fans were fired up ahead of the action, wasn't the ending they saw coming, but described the last three hours you spent with him. Lauren, certainly not the outcome. Any of these fans wanted tonight, but it was a lot of energy throughout the night watching those goals and just watching the cane score and you could see the energy here and you can see those fans certainly excited but I can tell you when the Golden Knights made that last goal it really sucked the energy from this a watch party you can see the disappointment in the fans faces right now you have those fans leaving out of the Lenovo center you can see them now you know certainly not cheering as loud as they were throughout the game they were certainly disappointed by this outcome but I want to show you what it was like during this watch party take a look here at all the fans
Starting point is 00:02:04 cheering, screaming, chanting, let's go Keynes. You also heard them saying they want the cup. So we heard a lot of cheering tonight. So the energy at some points throughout this game really high. You also had fans catching T-shirts and just really
Starting point is 00:02:20 cheering, throwing up dreams when the Cain scored. So again, a lot of energy, but just not the outcome these fans wanted. And I'm standing here with one of the younger fans here. This is Lizzie. Lizzie has been cheering on the Cains all night. Lizzie, Certainly not the outcome we were hoping for, but you're still ready for this series.
Starting point is 00:02:38 Talk to me about how you feel tonight? I feel somewhat disappointed. I'm glad that we had a pretty good game. We played hard. We tried extremely hard. It's going to be the 20-year anniversary of us winning the Cup, and maybe the second game might be our lucky. game because it's the 20 anniversary and two might be the lucky number.
Starting point is 00:03:08 All right. So we're hoping that game two we will have a better luck there. So yeah, not the outcome these fans wanted, but I'm certainly looking forward to game two on Thursday. Lauren's seat. Yeah, Lizzie put a good spin on it, right? We like her post game analysis. I do too. Two could be your lucky number. That's what I'm saying. You know, two championships, game two. All right, Jimmy, thank you. Duan Hogarth, also spending the evening with those diehard Keynes fans. He was inside Lenovo. Yeah, you continue our live team coverage. And, DeWan, this has shaped up to be an incredible series based on the action we saw in there.
Starting point is 00:03:40 I know the place was going wild all night long. Yeah, already, Steve, just the energy in the building, absolutely electric. I mean, the only person or persons in here right now who are actually on Cloud 9 are the Vegas Knights fans, the Golden Knights, right? Because they ended up winning this evening of 5 to 4. So certainly, as we've just mentioned, not the outcome that Kani actually. I mean we we had a lot of energy heading into this evening you see one of the one of the golden nights guys over here enjoying himself looks like a house divided he's here with somebody to my left just a little bit with the canes but I talked to a couple of
Starting point is 00:04:17 folks just immediately after that that that final whistle went off at the end of the game and here's what they had to say about about how things went tonight I feel good about it we didn't play well tonight and it was close game so I think we're gonna take the next one and then we'll go from there so I mean, they can come back. It's not like, it's not like we're down three nothing or anything. So we can always come back. You know, I'm still feeling good.
Starting point is 00:04:42 I think the boys have got it. They can pull it together. Yeah, certainly everybody's hoping that they can pull it together again. Look, here's a divided group. It came, see. Never mind him. Never mind him. He's just kind of high off of that win tonight.
Starting point is 00:05:00 But five to four, we took game one. We lost game one. But if there's any silver lining, folks here they are. excited than if they win the next four out, they can clinch right here and bring the Stanley Cup here at home. So that's what the Kaniak fans are hoping for tonight, live from the Lenovo Center. Duane Hogan, I-Elevard. I-Witness News. And you look at the Kane's entire playoff run, and there is reason for a whole lot of optimism tonight. Absolutely. Duane, thank you. The Lenovo Center was not the only place to catch the game with the crowd. Take a look at
Starting point is 00:05:26 the turnout tonight in the smoky hollow neighborhood near downtown Raleigh. Dozens of fans watch the game under the stars gathered together. Downtown Raleigh, also the the place to be tonight. Hundreds were packed there in Moore Square to cheer the team on in the heart of the city. Yeah, they had a Jumbotron right there in Moore Square. Michael Perchick is there. An amazing night for fans to be gathered together watching all the action. Yes, you just heard from DeWan plenty of ups and downs in this one. Of course, you had this crowd going to a frenzy in the first period with that 2-0 lead. Thanks to Nicolaise Ieloz. But Vegas responding with three goals, the captain Jordan Stahl nodding things up. You had Vegas getting back on the board to take that four three lead.
Starting point is 00:06:06 Shane Gassasbier right after a penalty kill to tie things up. It looked like this was heading to overtime, a game that probably deserved overtime, but that late goal by Tomas Hurtle giving Vegas that 5-4 win. The Kerala hurricane blew six multi-goal leads in the first half of the season. This was really an area they struggled with. Second half, much different. Only three games they blown with a multi-go lead in the second half of the season and the playoffs since then. brutal timing for that fourth. As you mentioned, huge crowd here at Moore Square. Downtown
Starting point is 00:06:36 Raleigh Line says they estimate more than 2,500 folks packing Moore Square earlier this evening for this game. The bulk of them staying until the end, and you certainly saw those cheers when they were taking that 2-0 lead. A lot of tense moments throughout the second and the third period and a sense of dejection, kind of shock to an extent that the game ended in this way. The good news is we just watched this play out in the Eastern Conference. conference finals. Cain's not showing up really against Montreal in game one. They rebound with four straight wins.
Starting point is 00:07:07 The hope is they have a rebound and really what's going to be a pivotal must win game two. You don't want to go down to at home having to travel out to Vegas. So a sloppy play at times, Freddie's certainly not at his best. The power play continues to struggle. There are certainly some things you can pull away from this one. I thought there was a better performance in what we saw in game one against Montreal. Not a sense that I think there's any loss of confidence here, still feel good about the overall
Starting point is 00:07:34 style of play. We'll have to see if they can rebound on Thursday night. Hopefully they do. We'll certainly be inside and outside the arena once again. Expect more square to be packed, so get here early. All right, an empty more square now as fans went home. They flooded the park earlier today. They did, yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:49 It's great crowd. All right, Michael, thank you. And how's this for a full-circled moment? That's Eric Stahl, sounding the siren before the start of tonight's game. Eric was part of that 2006 Stanley Cup winning team when he was 20, he was 20, he was 20, years old. And his younger brother Jordan, who's the Kane's captain, is chasing the cup 20 years later. He had one of the Kane's four goals tonight. And the energy on the ice was really wild as soon as the puck dropped tonight. The Kane scoring 25 seconds into the game. That was one of two goals tonight for Nikolai
Starting point is 00:08:23 Eilers. Kate Rogers and getting a front row seat to all the action. She continues our live team coverage inside a now quiet Lenovo center with a recap tonight of the action there on the ice. Kate. Steve, a tough result for the Carolina Hurricanes in game one of the Stanley Cup final. After what was such an electric start when Nikolai Elyer scored two goals in the first period, it felt like the roof was going to blow up off of this building. Soon enough that two-goal lead turned to a three-due deficit versus the Vegas Golden Knights. The Keynes fought back, making it 4-4 late in the third period. But Tomas Hurdle putting the dagger in with three minutes and 24 seconds to spare.
Starting point is 00:09:00 Here's a look at his score. Shane Goss of Spare couldn't keep up a third. And he got the puck in the slot right past Freddie Anderson, making it 5-4. Tonight marks the second time this postseason that Keynes have lost. It's the second time this postseason that goaltender Freddie Anderson has given up more than two goals. So the Carolina Hurricanes Trail in this series won nothing to the Vegas Golden Knights. Of course, not the way they wanted to start out the opening game of the Stanley Cup final. There was so much momentum, so much hype and so much excitement coming into this moment here inside the Lenovo Center.
Starting point is 00:09:28 It's also the first time in franchise history that the Canes have lost game one of the Cup final. Good news is this series is not over. It takes four wins to raise the Stanley Cup. And if anything, this proved that the knights and the canes, it's going to be a battle. This thing was so close on both sides of the ice. We're going to see what this thing holds. Trayvon Miles will join me later in the show in sports as he went into the locker room and checked him with the guys to see how they're feeling after this 5-4 loss. We'll see you in a bit.
Starting point is 00:09:53 Back to you. Kate, you sized it up perfectly. This is going to be an incredible series to watch. Yeah, it is. Yesterday, Kate interviewed a woman who says this is going to go six or seven games. So we're in it for the long haul. That's right, yeah. Kate, thank you, and we will have team coverage throughout the Stanley Cup final.
Starting point is 00:10:06 It includes pregame specials each game night before puck drops. Chasing the cup will be ahead of game two on Thursday night. Tune in at 730 right here on ABC 11 and wherever you stream. And it's not just the hockey finals, but we've got you covered on basketball tomorrow night. It's game one of the NBA finals, the San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks go head to head tomorrow. Tip off in that game is at 8.30. Still to come at 11, we're following several developing stories tonight. at a shooting investigation underway in carry.
Starting point is 00:10:33 Plus, we have a sad update in the death of a two-month-old baby girl. Yeah, the baby's father is now charged with murder and we now know how she died. The details coming up in a few minutes. Plus, a search now underway for this man who police say was behind a scare at a Walmart today in Oxford, what he allegedly did that led to an evacuation.

Not much to show you on the radar network tonight. But that change is it's gonna warm up over the next couple days. We'll talk about that in your first alert forecast coming on.
Starting point is 00:11:09 We are local news. ABC 11, I Witness News continues now. Now at 11, Chopper 11 is over the Lenovo Center. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump coming to North Carolina today. He's now representing the woman who was assaulted by a former Shelby police officer. Bryson contributed his talents to the Oscar-winning Disney duets, Beauty and the Beast sung alongside Celine Dion and a whole new world sung with Regina Bell and Aladdin. I know such a tragedy when kids are out trying to have fun in this gorgeous weather. Absolutely. Yeah, around here, Don says it's good sleeping weather outside.
