Starting point is 00:00:01 Right now, live coverage from your local news leader, preparing you for tomorrow starting tonight and your first alert forecast. Here's what's happening where you live. This is ABC 11 eyewitness news. Well, tonight, a disappointing end to game three of the Stanley Cup final for your Carolina Hurricanes. The Cains falling short on the road to the Vegas Golden Knights 5 to 4 in double OT. And back here at home, a nail biteer for our Cains fans tonight. The loudest house in hockey, aka the Lenovo Center, was packed tonight with fans watching that game ever so closely. Meanwhile, just down the road in downtown Raleigh, Caniacs were at the Smoky Hollow District, rocking the venue tonight.
Starting point is 00:00:44 But sadly, fans did not get the results that they wanted. You are watching this very late edition of Eyewitness News. I'm Dwan Hogarth. Thank you so much for joining us on what was Saturday night, now very early Sunday morning. And we just watched the Cains and the Golden Knights face off in game three of the Stanley Cup final that you just saw moments. go end on ABC 11 and what a game it was. That game going into double OT. But sadly, what we watched here on the ice tonight,
Starting point is 00:01:09 the Cains could not pull off a win. However, we do have live team coverage for you this evening. Diane Wilson and Raleigh where a watch party at Smokey Hollow just wrapped up. Kate Roderson on the road at T-Mobile Arena in Vegas to break down all the action. But let's go ahead and start our time together with John Downing. He's talking with Cainiacs. Look, I know the Lenny was packed tonight. We saw fans get really excited just in the way that we wanted it to.
Starting point is 00:01:35 Well, first of all, Duane, if my voice cracks at all while I'm speaking to you right now, you know why, because I was screaming along with the 18,000 Kaniaks who were inside the Lenovo Center, including these two women right here, Amar and Malia, they're still energetic and happy, even though we didn't get the win we wanted here. I mean, just this was a roller coaster of emotions of a game. How did you guys feel watching this the whole time? So excited, very thrilled. like a roller coaster of emotions honestly.
Starting point is 00:02:02 I felt like I was gonna have a heart attack. I don't know. I mean, I was right there with you. I was right there with you. Yeah, but definitely too young to have a heart attack. But regardless, they were playing so amazing this third period and I'm just so proud of our boys, but it's got luck in the next game for sure.
Starting point is 00:02:18 It was a hard fought game too, obviously. So just how did you guys also feel? Because that energy in the Lenovo Center tonight, it felt like a regular game. It did. It felt exactly like a regular game. Like I almost like forgot. It was only a watch party.
Starting point is 00:02:31 So I'm like, I'm so excited for them to do even more of them for sure. People were taking off their shirts going crazy around us. And I think that really helped. They must have been filling the spirit in the arena tonight. So it really helped them get those three goals. And I'm so proud of them, honestly. And it was like a nail biteer right to the very end. And it kind of ended so quickly too.
Starting point is 00:02:52 Did you, I mean, how did you guys feel seeing it end so late here in double overtime too? Exhausted. Yeah, I was really tired. Like I couldn't believe it happened. It's kind of happy, so I could go to sleep. But yeah, I'm just. You guys ready for game four? Yes, definitely.
Starting point is 00:03:07 We're ready. Let's go, Keynes, please. Let's go. I hope they went. Absolutely. Well, we still got that energy here, even though it wasn't the result we wanted here tonight. But again, so many Kinniaks fans were out here,
Starting point is 00:03:19 so much great energy, like we always say, it's lit here at the Lenovo Center. And it really was today. It felt like a game. It really did feel like a regular game, not even just a watch party. But again, not the result. wanted tonight but again just still a great night they really played so incredibly well
Starting point is 00:03:33 tonight so just wait for game four here to Juan yeah we're gonna get some rest between now and Tuesday John thanks for your report and go ahead and get home get some rest and look while the Lenovo center was packed out tonight downtown Raleigh also full of canyax for game three I want to go and show you what things looked over like at smoky hollow district tonight hundreds of fans swarming the area there for the watch party and that overtime contest keeping many Cain's fans also Diane, I'm feeling for you, but I know it was a lot of fun down there tonight. We're bringing you into the broadcast now.
Starting point is 00:04:06 Look, just what a night it was for all of Arcaniacs. It really was, but look, someone was so mad they left their chair and I just took advantage of it. Because what a game. I mean, this place was packed. There was chairs all the way out here. And now, look, it's like me, myself and I and a few people that are sticking around, lingering around. But I mean, the excitement here was just energetic. It was, you know, I got to say the first three periods until the end was just, oh my gosh, can these canes just do something different?
Starting point is 00:04:38 And then all of a sudden, what, they had three goals in 39 seconds? It might have been four. I don't know. No, I think it was three goals within 39 seconds. And then when the fourth, I mean, they just lit up because some people did leave at first thinking the game was over. And they're like, we'll be back for game four. But then they just turned it around. The overtime we waited, double overtime.
Starting point is 00:04:56 and then, ugh, we lost. Just so disappointing. But the fans were really into it throughout the game there at the end. They tried and really wanted those canes to pull through, but when they didn't, you know what, these can't fans, they still have faith. I mean, honestly, you know,
Starting point is 00:05:13 it was a hard-fought game, you know, but we showed that, you know, we had passion. I'm glad that at least we went out there and we did what we were supposed to do. We'll give them a game four, right? So they are ready for game for the game for their.
Starting point is 00:05:27 gentlemen there and look I already got my seat ready for the playing Tuesday right so you'll find me probably not back here Tuesday hopefully I'm watching from my house on Tuesday but it was a fun night with all the Cain's fans here in Smokey Hollow yeah Diana sign from a win I know you wouldn't have it any other way except for maybe an earlier finish to the game maybe they can get done in three periods I would have taken that yeah absolutely I know a lot of us for it again thanks so much all right let's go and get out to T-Mobile arena in Las Vegas that's where everything happened tonight there on
Starting point is 00:05:57 the ice. Kate Roderson traveling with the canes. She had a front row seat to every single minute of tonight's double overtime gain. Now Kate, before the broadcast, the only thing I asked for was the canes not to give me any anxiety at all. Well, I think they gave you maybe a little bit more anxiety than anyone could have helped for tonight. The Carolina Hurricanes, of course, made that valiant effort coming back to score four goals in the third period. Those first three goals scored in 39 seconds, as Diane mentioned. That's the fastest in Stanley Cup history. Andrei Fetchnikoff, Adam, with less than two minutes to spare. One overtime wasn't enough. It took two.
Starting point is 00:06:36 And, of course, it's the Vegas Golden Knights walking away out of their building with the 2-1 series lead. What's bad about this loss for the Carolina Hurricanes is that the team that goes on to win game three of the Stanley Cup final, when a series is tied 1-1, goes on to win this series 77% of the time. Tonight is the Carolina Hurricanes' first time losing on the road this postseason. And it's our first time losing in overtime this postseason. You could tell on the ice these guys were gassed. The lines were getting changed because of injuries, trying to give people breaks. Of course, Brandon Bussie was in the next getting in there for the first time since April 14th, this first playoff game.
Starting point is 00:07:11 There were so many emotions. There was so much anxiety. You could tell everybody just wanted this game to be over. And in the end, it was the Vegas Golden Knights who had the lucky draw of the stick, Shea Theodore. It looked like Jordan Martin Nook stick went in the back of the net, ending this in a heartbreaker 5 for the final score of game 3. of the Stanley Cup final. Trayvon Miles is down inside Team Mobile Arena in the bowels in the locker room chatting with the guys.
Starting point is 00:07:32 He'll come back and join me in a little bit. We're going to see what the mood is like in the locker room. The series is not over. We still got game four, but a crushing defeat here in Vegas to want. Yeah, Kate and I know at least with that 77% numbers never lie, but if there's any sort of silver lining or context, that last goal to push it ahead five to four, it wasn't on goal.
Starting point is 00:07:50 So at least you can kind of say that there was nothing that the Vegas Knights actually did to put that puck into the net. So we'll see how game four shapes up. Go ahead and get some rest. We'll see again on Tuesday. And actually, first we'll see a little bit later on in the broadcast with Trey. We will continue to have team coverage throughout the entire final, including pregame specials, each night before puck drop. Chasing the Cup airs next Tuesday night at 7.30 on ABC 11 and wherever you stream.
Starting point is 00:08:16 And after the special, you can watch Game 4 of the Stanley Cup final right here on ABC 11, as we just mentioned. We are also the home of the NBA Finals between the Spurs. and the New York Knicks. Game 3 is Monday night right here on ABC 11. Well, still to come, an argument in Raleigh's Glenwood South District
Starting point is 00:08:33 ends in gunfire. What we're learning tonight about the man charged in connection and how the victims are doing at this hour. And the U.S. and Tehran trading strikes in the Strait of Hormuz
Starting point is 00:08:42 straining the fragile ceasefire. President Donald Trump's message tonight to those here at home feeling the pain of war. And the LGBT Center of Raleigh receiving a major donation. We've got more from the big moment all caught on camera
Starting point is 00:08:55 and meteorologist Kim Diener and for Cruz Medina tonight with a check off our temp for now. Well, it's warm Dwan out there. Temperatures mainly in the mid to upper 70s across the area. We will cool back into the 60s overnight tonight,
Starting point is 00:09:08 but we're looking at the possibility of breaking a record high tomorrow. We'll talk more about it on the other side of the breaks. And stay with us. Well, new details tonight in an early morning shooting in Raleigh. It happened at the intersection
Starting point is 00:09:22 of Glenwood Avenue in West Jones Street. Please tell us they found a man and woman who had been shot around 1.45 morning. They say a two men had been arguing when one of them a shot the other. The woman who police say was an innocent bystander was also hit during the incident. Both of the victims were taken to the hospital and are expected to be okay. According to court documents, obtained by eyewitness news, 30-year-old Nashon Ramsey was arrested in connection. He's facing multiple charges tonight. In Samson County, we're learning more about a tragic mobile home fire
Starting point is 00:09:53 that killed multiple dogs that happened in the 1,200 block of Clayton Road and the town of Godwin, around 1245 this afternoon. It's still unclear how the fire started or exactly how many dogs were inside the home at the time. Also tonight, the search continues for these two inmates who escaped from the Vance County Detention Center earlier this week. 33-year-old Michael Miles, also known as Mike Mike and 21-year-old Lashon-Knot, escaped Wednesday afternoon from the jail. Since then, digital billboards went up across the state to help in that ongoing search for the two of them. Surveillance video here you can see showing the moment two inmates broke out of the Vance County Jail. You see them there running down the hall. Vance County Sheriff Curtis Brayne says the getaway was planned,
Starting point is 00:10:36 but it's still not exactly clear how they were able to escape. Officials say call 911 if you see miles or not and do not approach them. They are considered armed and dangerous. Right now there is a $40,000 reward for information leading to their arrest. Well, tonight at least a dozen people were injured in a mass shooting at a festival in Ohio. It happened in Toledo, where police say at least 12 people between the ages of 16 and 61, were injured in the shooting near the Old West End Fest. Two of them are in critical condition tonight. Investigators are still searching for the suspects. Meanwhile, on the front for the war with Iran, the conflict now nearing the 100-day mark. And tonight, a fragile ceasefire is under new strain after the latest U.S. and arraint,
Starting point is 00:11:22 strikes and the push to end the war is tied to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah and Lebanon. Tonight, here's ABC's Alison Kosuk with the latest. Tonight, the U.S. military releasing video showing fresh strikes on Iranian radar sites. U.S. officials say those strikes coming after Iran fired four one-way attack drones posing a threat to ships near the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait, a critical global shipping route, remains closed and leading to higher gas prices here at home. President Trump, addressing a group of farmers, acknowledged high gas and fertilizer prices as a result of the war, but promising relief.
Starting point is 00:12:00 But we're going to come out and your fertilizer prices are going to go way down, just like they were four months ago. Your fertilizer is down, your energy is down, your oil, your gas is all coming way down. The president also insisting the war could soon be coming to an end. We're at a point. We're going to come out of Iran very quickly, and it's going to be very strong. the other. Meanwhile, the administration is looking to increase economic pressure on Iran. A source tells ABC News the U.S. Treasury Department is planning to use Iranian assets to help rebuild and repair any future damage caused by Iran in the Gulf. That could include frozen Iranian assets as well as ships the U.S. has seized. But talks to end the war between the U.S. and Iran are also hinging on the conflict in Lebanon,
Starting point is 00:12:47 between Israel and the Iranian-backed military group Hezbollah. Lebanon state media says Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon killed nine people, including three members of the Lebanese military. The strikes coming days after Israel and Lebanon reached a new ceasefire agreement, but Hezbollah has rejected the terms of that deal. Michelle Franzen, ABC News, New York. Meanwhile, Pope Leo is in Spain with his first official trip to the country, thousands lining the streets and bridge overpasses to welcome him to the capital.
Starting point is 00:13:20 Local authorities in Madrid say more than half a million people gathered for this event tonight in the city center. Many of them young people. Vatican says young people are part of a growing number of new Catholic followers, the Pope using the trip to call for peace. Our age, which on the surface seems to be plagued by terrible imbalances and conflicts, cries out from the depths of its being for peace. for a new understanding of the human person, a human person of inviolable dignity,
Starting point is 00:13:53 and for the civilization of love. The Pope will spend four days in Madrid before stops in Barcelona and the Canary Islands. Well, tonight, the search for a missing 20-year-old American student in Japan has ended in tragedy. Search and rescue volunteers found the body of James Weston Higginbotham in a mountainous area just outside of Kyoto today.
Starting point is 00:14:16 His family, making the announcement on social media, local police say the cause of death is under investigation. The 20-year-old was a vacationing with his family when he disappeared back on May 29th. His mom said he opted to explore Kyoto on his own after they disagreed over her use of chat GPT to navigate their trip. He was last seen walking on a path that led to a hiking trail in the nearby woods. $12,239. The LGBT Center of Raleigh receiving a major donation. Organizers of the Y'all Means All Beer Festival
Starting point is 00:14:51 presenting the center with a donation of more than $12,000 this afternoon at the Raleigh Brewing Company's pride event. The money came from the inaugural beer festival in April. Staff from the LGBT Center say the help is needed now more than ever. A ton more people are coming through the doors, needing things like food and clothing and care products and honestly just to find community. To be able to turn around and give a somewhat significant chunk of change back to the center to, you know, show them that we do actually support them.
Starting point is 00:15:31 Organizers of this afternoon's event also shared some exciting news. The Y'all Means All Beer Festival will return for a second year in 2027 to the Raleigh Brewing Company. Let's go ahead and get you outside right now for look at how things are turning up at this hour. And both Raleigh and Durham on this what is now Sunday morning. Another hot evening across the triangle with temps soaring into the 90s today. And spoil alert, tomorrow will be just as hot. We have meteorologist Kim Diner in for Cruz Medina tonight. No way around it.
Starting point is 00:16:03 Just not over it, not under it, not around it, straight through it. Straight through it. I mean, we do this, you know, often in the summertime, but it's not even really officially summer yet. Not yet. We are headed straight into a long week, a very hot weather. And in addition to that, we don't have a chance of a really good chance of any rain in the forecast.
Starting point is 00:16:23 So the drought will continue and worsen, as a matter of fact, as we head into next week. So here's what we're going to look for weather headline-wise. tomorrow or today when you get up if you're still up with us once you go to sleep and get back up again we are going to be flirting with 100 degrees tomorrow now that will be the record to break at Rdu so we'll at least come close to tying it if not breaking it for tomorrow and then the we see it increase in the humidity that happens later on the week and that's going to increase that chance of heat illness and heat stroke and so please be careful if you work outside it's going to be hot over the next couple of days but it won't be until after Wednesday we really rank up I mean that's going to increase. ramp up that humidity. And then we have that chance of rain being very low, unfortunately, and the drought will worsen. So here's a look at rain chances as we had all the way through the work week into next weekend.
Starting point is 00:17:13 We stay very low. Now, there is that isolated chance of a shower or two, really any day this week, but best chance will be Monday into Tuesday. And look at these temperatures. Now, in the next 10 days, only two out of the next 10 days will temperatures be in the 80s, and they're almost 90 degrees with 89 on Wednesday,
Starting point is 00:17:31 88 on the following Wednesday, so we're not really talking about a cool down. Even we do stay out of the 90s. Here's what it looks like across the area right now. The cool spot, Siler City at 66, 77 in Durham, 75 here in Raleigh. And then we have a cold front. Now, this cold front will drop through the area on Monday. So after we see highs tomorrow at 98 to 100 degrees, we'll get a bit of a break. But unfortunately, that break will be short-lived. That's the day on Tuesday where we see temperatures only in the 80. And look at all that moisture across the area. Unfortunately, it's going to stay to the west of us. This front is going to slip to the south, so we're going to continue to see that drier air stay in place. I'm going to step out so you get a good look at that seven-day forecast. Now, near record temperatures for today, temperatures climbing to near 98 degrees.
Starting point is 00:18:19 Now, for Monday, that straight storm chance is in the forecast. Best chance of seeing that rain, though, is going to be south of the triangle. We all need the rain, but again, if anyone gets it, good for you. That's it good for you because we definitely need it. Tuesday a little bit cooler with 89 degrees. I can't believe I'm talking about that's cooler. But when we head into Wednesday, we heat back up to the lower 90s, then we're back up into
Starting point is 00:18:43 the mid to upper 90s. When we factor in the humidity, these mid to upper 90s are going to fill well over 100 degrees. And that's why I would imagine as we head into the latter part of the work week, we'll start to see those advisories coming from the National Weather Service, those heat advisories, possibly heat warnings for folks that work outside or spend extended time outside. Just be prepared that even though it's going to be hot for tomorrow, DeWan, we're not going to be dealing with humidity levels that we're going to be dealing with as we head into the latter part of the work week.
Starting point is 00:19:15 I still excuse for a trip to the pool. Yes, definitely. As many trips to the pool as you can work out. All right, Kim, thanks so much. Well, coming up, T for two, the women from across the triangle gathering today in an effort to raise awareness for breast cancer. We're hearing from both survivors and advocates who helped organize the event. Well, new tonight, women from across the triangle gathering in Durham for the 21st annual T-for-2 as part of an effort to draw attention to breast cancer.
Starting point is 00:19:44 ABC 11's Michael Perchig, hearing from survivors and advocates about why this work is so important. I'm a two-time breast cancer survivor. Renee Joyner finding support with Sister Network Triangle NC. When you walk into this, you feel inspired, you feel motivated, you feel cared for, you feel like somebody. knows what you are going through. And that gives you comfort. Sisters Network is the country's largest black breast cancer survivorship organization. Its Pink Ribbon Awareness Campaign is focused on encouraging women to get screened.
Starting point is 00:20:18 And it's extremely important because African American women, among other things, they're an underserved population when it comes to a lot of health care in avenues. Portia Scott Hedgepeth is a president of the Triangle Chapter. She was just 31 years old when she was diagnosed. This October, I'll be a 33-year breast cancer survivor. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer accounts for about 30% of all new female cancers each year. Despite overall lower incidence rates, non-Hispanic black women are more likely to develop more aggressive advanced stage breast cancer at a younger age and have higher mortality rates.
Starting point is 00:20:55 Mammograms and monthly self-breast exams save lives. It allows women to find abnormalities in between your... regular doctor checkups and believe it or not it makes a world of difference to have those. In Durham on Michael Perchick, ABC 11, eyewitness news. Michael, thank you. Also new tonight, Wake County hosting its Veterans Stand Down event today. It was a free day of services and care all in one place for our local veterans. Some of those services included showers and hygiene kits, free haircuts, hot breakfast and lunch, pet services and even health screenings.
Starting point is 00:21:33 All right up next, our Stanley Cup coverage continues tonight. The Cains falling short, five to four and a double overtime loss out in the desert. Cade Roderson and Trayvon Miles joining us after the break with highlights from tonight's game. They're bags for Sin City. We still have a game four out there. After the break, we'll tell you how much it'll cost to cheer on the Cains in person in Las Vegas.
