Starting point is 00:00:02 Right now, live coverage from your local newsleader, preparing you for tomorrow starting tonight and your first alert forecast. Here's what's happening where you live. This is ABC 11 eyewitness news. Well, tonight on eyewitness news at 11, it has been four days since two inmates escaped from a Vance County jail. And tonight, there's still no sign of them. What experts are saying about the search and where the men could be tonight. And as prices continue to rise, stretching a paycheck or living, living on a fixed income is becoming more difficult. Local food pantries telling eyewitness news they are seeing more and more visitors. And your Carolina hurricanes are looking ahead to this Tuesday following last night's devastating loss in game three of the Stanley Cup final. Head coach Rod Brennamor says he doesn't anticipate any lineup changes for game four.
Starting point is 00:00:51 Both teams understand how they need to play and you got to stick with it. Those stories are just ahead, but first we want to start our time together with First Alert weather a live look at your Raleigh skyline on this hot and humid evening. The triangle seeing near record breaking heat today. You're watching our witness news at 11 tonight. I'm Dwan Hogarth. So glad that you've chosen to spend part of your Sunday evening with us. Now, if you spend any time outside today, then you definitely felt those temperatures soaring into the upper 90s.
Starting point is 00:01:19 And know that the heat, it's even sticking around for tomorrow. For that, we have Chief Meteorollies. Don Chuaniker in tonight for Cruz Medina. Don, I know we're still officially a few weeks out from it being summer, but it still feels like it. Absolutely. Those heat with us and it's going to stay with us for a while. We'll talk about that coming up. Good evening to you. Live look for Slurke Dopplernet. Mainly just radar trash. Couple of sprinkles up in Northern Nash County and Edgecom County. That is it. A live look into person county as we look into uptown Roxborough.
Starting point is 00:01:48 72 and clear on a south-southwest wind at six miles an hour. Look at the number still very warm out there tonight. 83, Raleigh, 82 Durham, 80 in Fayetteville. Seventville. 74 out your door in Siler City. 10 degrees warmer in Rocky Mount and 80 in Goldsboro. So first alert to that overnight forecast. And we'll see those temperatures falling through the 80s by 7 o'clock tomorrow. 73 degrees to start today. And by 11 a.m. We're back near those mid to upper 80s on our way into the 90s.
Starting point is 00:02:17 We do get a little relief one day this week. And we are seeing some rain chances to talk about. We'll first alert you to it all in your 7 day forecast coming up in just a bit. Do on. All right, we'll see you shortly done. While we are talking weather, now is a good time to download the ABC 11 mobile lab where we will send you all of the weather headlines directly to your devices. You can also check the Doppler net and the seven-day forecast anytime you'd like.
Starting point is 00:02:40 Well, tonight, Durham, police are investigating a shooting that sent a man to the hospital. It happened shortly after 1130 last night at the intersection of Queen and Liberty Streets. Police say when they got there, they found a man who had been shot. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. No word yet on any arrest. Well, the search for a missing kayaker in Halifax County comes to a tragic end. Crews say they found the body of Angel Martinez, who went missing last month at Roanoke Rapids Lake. Martinez went missing after a boat overturned while kayaking with his friend there on the lake.
Starting point is 00:03:13 Responders rescued his friend, however, could not find him. Deputies say Cruz found the body on Saturday. That search involving more than 20 state and local agencies. Well, tonight the search continues for the two inmates who, escaped from the Vance County Detention Center last week. 33-year-old Michael Miles, also known as Mike, Mike, and 21-year-old Lashon-Nott, escaped last Wednesday afternoon from the jail. And since then, multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, have joined in the search to find them.
Starting point is 00:03:42 Our Tom, George, joining us live now from the Riley-I-Witness News Center. Tom, just a very active search right now. What more are you learning about this search for those two men tonight? A very active search, and that search is now about to enter day five. I did speak with the Vance County Sheriff today. He tells me that there is no new update on the case, but he believes that this was all planned ahead of time. And meanwhile, the FBI and other agencies now getting involved in that search.
Starting point is 00:04:09 Video shows the two inmates, 33-year-old Michael Lewis Miles Jr. and 21-year-old Lashon-Not running down a hallway still in their orange jumpsuits during their escape from the jail Wednesday afternoon. The FBI now sharing these photos and offering a $40,000 combined reward. What's interesting about this where it's located in Henderson, It's right on the border of Virginia. So the assumption that they're going to go interstate is pretty high. And that's even more of a risk given the fact that it's believed that the two suspects planned this all in advance and had help from the outside.
Starting point is 00:04:40 They're also believed to have been picked up nearby. Yeah, this is very common. I've either seen where, you know, when they're on the run, they have no support, no one picking them up, and they're on the loose running through the woods and breaking into houses and stealing cars. That doesn't last very long. When you have people assisting you and giving you a ride, see, already it's been several days. They could be in California by now, you know, but the good thing is they're going to leave a trail. And the federal government's going to help the sheriff's office to identify that trail and follow that trail and get them safely back into custody.
Starting point is 00:05:15 And part of that trail, he says, will include investigating any contacts they may have had in helping plan this. They're going to check the records to see who visited them in jail. brothers, sisters, things like that, they're going to go interview these people and warn them that there are penalties for helping somebody out who escapes from prison, serious penalties. And so they're going to concentrate on these people.
Starting point is 00:05:39 They're going to conduct surveillance. They're going to check cell phone records to see who's communicating about it. In the meantime, that search continues. We're going to continue pushing the FBI and Vance County Sheriff's Office for more information. But again, those suspects are considered armed and dangerous. So if you do see them, call 911 immediately.
Starting point is 00:06:02 Reporting live. Tom, George, ABC 11, I witness news. All right, Tom, thank you. Meanwhile, as concerns over immigration continue to grow across the country and even here in the triangle, local faith leaders are coming together to support immigrants with resources they may need. Hundreds gathering at Edenton Street United Methodist Church in downtown Rale today
Starting point is 00:06:19 for the Interfaith United for Immigrants Meeting. The group, which was formed by religious leaders, aimed at helping to educate immigrants about their rights and supporting them with resources. Organizers say the group was started after many of the faith leaders began hearing stories from people being afraid to go to work or school and unsure about their rights. It isn't one faith community. It's many faith communities which often do not share a lot in common coming together, all saying no, we are a welcoming nation and we want to live in a way that it respects that tradition of America, but also what our faith calls us to do.
Starting point is 00:07:00 There will be several more events like today's over this summer. Organizers say they are also planning training sessions for people to understand their legal rights when dealing with immigration enforcement. Well, as higher costs continue to put pressure on household budgets, local food pantries say they are seeing more people turn to them for help. Akela Davis showing us how a Durham church is stepping up to meet that growing need. I had to really tighten up on my going places and buying stuff. I mean, the gas prices are really for me.
Starting point is 00:07:33 They have just a real inconvenience. Like many Americans, John Atwater says his money can only stretch so far. The 79-year-old disabled veteran says he's had to make difficult choices to keep up with rising costs. I'm on the fixed income. I had to cut down on my food. Rising prices, federal funding cuts, and inflation are putting added pressure on food pantries across the country. We are here at the food pantry here at Antioch Baptist Churches. In Durham, Reverend Dr. Michael Page showed me around the church's pantry where he says the demand for help continues to grow.
Starting point is 00:08:10 They are much, a lot more families. Here and I can meet a lot more elderly who are just really in need of some real basic items trying to make it from month to month. He says the need really shows up in the middle of the month. when many families have exhausted their money on gas, housing, and other bills. The church also provides hot meals. We try to do the hot meals once a month, but the food pantry here is open once a week, and it's from 9 to 12. The pantry is open every Thursday, but church leaders try to remain flexible if emergencies arise.
Starting point is 00:08:41 And sometimes by appointment because people get in crisis, and we really want to be able to support people whenever they need it. He showed me the shelves, stocked with canned goods, and other non-perishable items. But things like peanut butter, peanut butter lasts a really long time for family. Families who may need that extra support, as many say relief at the checkout line and gas pump, still feels out of reach. In Durham, Akela Davis, ABC 11, eyewitness news. Well, in Durham, the city holding its annual World Hunger Day event, community members coming together at Durham Central Park this afternoon to raise awareness about food insecurity. It was also a chance for people to learn how our local food systems work.
Starting point is 00:09:22 Plenty of fun for everyone there, including music, free food giveaways and activities for kids. A lot of people don't know that other people are experiencing food insecurity. Some people have to choose between food and medicine or food and rent. And so it's important that they have great choices and know how to access food. And this was the fifth year of the event. All right, next at 11, we have reached the 100-day mark with the war with Iran and still no signs of an end. Iran and Israel trading strikes again today, the impact it could have on the already tenuous ceasefire. And the New York next security crackdown for their first NBA finals home game in 27 years.
Starting point is 00:10:09 The team issuing some new rules for fans looking to attend game three tomorrow. And Don is back with the check of our attempts outside. Feeling like summer out there tonight, numbers running in the 80. still. We do have some relief on Tuesday, but after that, it gets even warmer. We'll talk about that in your first alert forecast. Coming up next. Hey, y'all, it's Kelly Clarkson with Wayfair. Ever order furniture online and wonder, what if? Like, what if it doesn't hold up? That sofa was four days old. You should have ordered from Wayfair. With Wayfair, there's no what if. Just style you love and quality you can trust. Visit Wayfair.
Starting point is 00:10:42 Wayfair, every style, every home. Well, this was the scene tonight in Tehran, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps showing street celebrations after Iran launched its first missile attack targeting Israel since an early April ceasefire. And those strikes all come after a deadly Israeli strike on Beirut hours earlier. And this weekend, Iran and the U.S. also exchanging fire near the Strait of Hormuz, and it all comes amid a fragile ceasefire and negotiations to end the war. Tonight, here's ABC's Allison Kosick with the latest. Tonight, a dangerous new escalation in the Middle East. Iran firing multiple waves of ballistic missiles at northern Israel for the first time in nearly two months.
Starting point is 00:11:28 The IDF saying they intercepted all 10 Iranian missiles and that there are no reports of any injuries or deaths. Iran says it is retaliating for Israeli strikes earlier in the day in Beirut. The IDF saying they were targeting Iranian-backed Hezbollah with those strikes, just hours after the militant group fired projectiles into northern Israel. President Trump reacting to the news during a phone interview with Fox News Sunday, reportedly saying, quote, what I would suggest to Iran, you've shot your missiles, that's enough. Get back to the table and make a deal. In another call, the president reportedly telling Axios, he was about to phone Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu
Starting point is 00:12:08 and tell him not to retaliate by attacking Iran. But in a sign of the pressure Netanyahu will now face domestically, and from within his own government, his far-right security minister Itamar Ben-Givir, posting in Hebrew on X. Tonight, Tehran must burn. An Israeli source familiar with the matter tells ABC News, Israel is planning to retaliate. Today's strike comes just days after a phone call between Netanyahu and President Trump. Sources tell ABC News the president was angered by Israel's escalation in Lebanon and concerned it could undercut ongoing talks between the U.S. and Iran.
Starting point is 00:12:46 Meanwhile, the U.S. military and Iran are also continuing to exchange fire near the Strait of Hormuz. Sendcom saying it struck Iranian radar sites this weekend, as well as Iranian one-way attack drones that were threatening ships in the strait. Iran then firing missiles at U.S. allies, Kuwait and Bahrain. Alison Kosick, ABC News, New York. Well, President Trump is not ruling out the possibility of providing payouts to January 6 rioters who attack the U.S. Capitol. including those who pleaded guilty to assaulting police officers that day. The president continuing to advocate for the so-called anti-weaponization fund that would compensate those that were allegedly wrongly targeted under the Biden administration.
Starting point is 00:13:29 This all coming despite the acting attorney general announcing they are scrapping the fund after a rare revolt from Senate Republicans. Trump defending the plan today in an interview with NBC News. The people were destroyed by dirty cops and by weaponization. many of those people should be compensated. But on Friday, a Department of Justice attorney officially putting in writing that plans to move forward with the fund would not move forward. More than 1,500 people were charged criminally in federal court in connection with January 6th, according to the Department of Justice. Well, new tonight, game three of the NBA finals takes place tomorrow night at Madison Square Garden in New York City,
Starting point is 00:14:08 where the Knicks will play a host to the San Antonio Spurs. And security will be tight for the game. announcing today there will be no watch parties outside of MSG for game three. For fans attending the game, bags will be banned and the venue will enforce TSA-style security measures. Fans are being told to arrive at least two hours before tip off to deal with the enhanced safety measures, and it comes as President Trump is expected to attend the game. Well, I'll be going to game three. I guess it's game three on Monday. I thought it was amazing.
Starting point is 00:14:39 I think the Knicks have an amazing team the way they played. started off slow and it just got stronger and stronger. Wembe looks like he's going to be a great player, but they really played well. President Trump would become the first sitting president to attend the finals. New York City Mayor Zeran Mamdani is also expected to attend the game. And remember, you can watch game three of the NBA finals
Starting point is 00:15:05 right here on ABC 11 at 830 tomorrow night. We are also the home of the Stanley Cup final. You can watch that game. Cains and the Vegas Golden Knights this Tuesday at 8 o'clock for game four right here on ABC 11. All right, so this Tuesday, even though the game is being played out in Vegas, there'll still be a lot of people tailgating, trying to get out for the watch party there at Lenovo, but it's going to be warm, very warm. It is Tuesday looks better than Thursday.
Starting point is 00:15:31 Tuesday is actually the pick day of the week temperature-wise. Let's talk about the one big thing. I want you to remember after the forecast tonight when it's all said and done, the 80s are in for one day, day. That's just in time for the Cains on Tuesday if you're headed to one of those watch parties. We are seeing a few sprinkles up to the north and east of the city tonight. First alert Doppler net scanning the skies shows a little bit of light rain right now up in Nash County working down toward Tarborough. It looks like Tarborough you'll miss out on the little pocket of rain. It is crossing 64 right now between Rocky Mount and Tarboro and that's just about it. Otherwise live look
Starting point is 00:16:05 into Durham tonight Mutual Tower sky cams showing 83 degrees still mostly cloudy west southwest West winds at seven, but it is warm out there tonight. 84 in Rocky Mount. 74 in Rotte, oh, crap, it's 75 Oxford, 71 at Roxburgh. 82 for you in Durham, 81 in Lillington, and 80 down in Fayetteville. We will go into the 60s and 70s. Normal for this time of year is 64. We're going to be about 5 to 8 degrees above that pretty much across the region tonight.
Starting point is 00:16:34 71 of Raleigh, Fayetteville, 67 in Sanford, and the humidity is starting to crank up a little more. Now satellite radar composite shows that little light. area of showers up to the north and east of the city. Plenty of clouds back to the west. Lots of rain down in parts of Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, all the way up into the Mississippi Valley tonight. But around here we are dry and we stay that way for the most part. Here are those sprinkles as we go through the overnight.
Starting point is 00:16:58 7 o'clock tomorrow morning as kids head back to school. Last full week of school in the traditional calendar here in Wake County. We'll see temperatures in the 70s. Then by the afternoon there is a chance of a shower, especially down here in the sand hills. late in the day. Not widespread. Most of you will not see any rain, but the potential is there to see a little bit of shower activity. Sanford, though, you'll be in the 90s. Rain could cool you off into the 80s down in Fayetteville. Then as we head into Tuesday, notice Tuesday morning a chance of showers mainly south and west, but unfortunately the rain chances really staying away. A lot of cloud cover working through on Tuesday, and that's what will hold our temperatures down in the 80s instead of 90s. We look at the latest surface map, and this is the cool front that drops through. So we head through the day on Monday. It's going to take a little while for the cooler air to get here.
Starting point is 00:17:45 That's why we're still in the 90s tomorrow. We don't hit 99 like we did today. But we'll be in the 90s, and that cooler air kind of settles in with that backdoor cold front temperatures in the 80s. So we head into Tuesday and then the warm air roars back in for your midweek. Forecast looks like this for tomorrow. Temperatures across the region in the 90s, 93, Raleigh, and Durham, 93 of Fayetteville. Notice those higher rain chances tomorrow down in the sand hills. Your seven-day forecast shows 8.000.
Starting point is 00:18:12 on Tuesday, Wednesday, 93 degrees and partly sunny. Then the humidity builds back in. If you're headed to the Keynes home game on Thursday, 96, feels like temperatures approaching 100. Friday, we could get up around 103 for that feels like temperature. We could see it linger near 100 on Saturday, with the risk of storms increasing Friday, Saturday into Sunday. We need all the rain we can get, and that will cool us a little bit.
Starting point is 00:18:37 But just one day in the 80s, that is Tuesday, and then we warm it back up. on. Oh, and we're still not even officially in summer yet, done. All right. Next at 11, a pop-up shop in Raleigh, vendors impacted by the abrupt closure of all the painted tree boutiques, got the chance to sell their goods again. Welcome back. Starting tomorrow, White County Schools will begin its second round of high school graduations. So tomorrow, students from Project Search will turn their tassels in a ceremony that starts at two in the afternoon. Then on Thursday, Enloe, Broughton, Garner, Milbrook, and Apex Friendship will hold their graduations. And on Friday, Rollsville High, Phillips, Green Hope, Crossroads Flex, and other schools will hold their ceremonies. We'll have coverage of all the graduations happening throughout the month. And congratulations. Well, today, vendors impacted by the abrupt closure of all the painted tree boutiques got a chance to set up shop once again. Now, you may remember when vendors were left scrambling to move when the retailer closed back in April. Well, today, and there was an indoor pop-up market for the businesses impacted. It was a chance for people to come out and shop local. It's been great getting to the customers and really talking to them and hearing their story.
Starting point is 00:19:52 And a lot of people have even done like special orders where they said, hey, I love this. Can you do this? And that's been great too because those are things that maybe we wouldn't have been able to do at the painted tree. Painted Tree has said the company closed all of its stores due to rising costs, shifting market conditions and changes in consumer shopping behavior. All right, we have Kate Roderson and Trayvon Miles joining us. Live now from the Las Vegas desert with a preview of what's coming up for game four. And the big question, if you're head coach Rod Brindamore, do you start Freddie Anderson or do you put Brandon Bussie back at goal?
Starting point is 00:20:29 Well, according to Rodbreddemore, there's going to be no changes to the lineup. We don't know if that means how the game started or how the game ended. Yeah, today was a much needed rest day for everybody involved. The canes are down but not out. They're looking to bet it all on red and black. We'll talk more when we come back with sports.
