Right now, live coverage from your local news leader, preparing you for tomorrow starting tonight and your first alert forecast.
Here's what's happening where you live. This is ABC 11 eyewitness news.
All right now at 11 gusty winds and dry conditions leading to an increased fire risk today.
A statewide burn ban is in effect for all of North Carolina tonight.
You're watching our witness news at 11 this evening. I'm Dwan Hoggard.
So glad that you have chosen to spend this time with us on.
this Saturday night. Now the North Carolina Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning
and has canceled all burning permits statewide until further notice. And it comes as we continue
to see dry conditions across the viewing area. Those dry conditions and gusty winds already leading
to multiple wildfires across the state today, including one in Robinson County, where an
evacuation order is in place because of a large wildfire there. This map you're looking at for
the State Forest Service shows the fires around 142 acres off the.
Veterans Road in St. Paul's. Meanwhile, in western North Carolina, video here showing crews there
continuing to battle several wildfires, including the Poplar fire in Mitchell County near the Tennessee
State Line. That fire started Monday evening. In an update today, the U.S. Forest Service says
the Poplar Fire has burned 350 acres and is now 80% contained, and more than 40 responders
and a helicopter are battling that fire as we speak. Now, meteorologist, Cruz Medina,
he's standing by in our first alert forecast center.
Now you can kind of better explain to us the exact risk we're seeing in exactly what it all means.
Yeah, so we've had drought conditions for several months now.
And so you get a dry air mask like we had today.
It felt like a different season and it was gusty.
All of these things are working together to create those fire conditions.
And so today we had peak wind gusts over 30 miles per hour in some locations like Durham.
And then elsewhere, we were at least gusting up to 25 miles per hour.
So that even though the winds have died down just a little bit,
Duane was just telling you this.
This burn ban is actually in effect statewide until further notice.
So we are going very dry for this time of the year,
heading into the growing season,
and that's not something that you want to see,
especially when this time of the year is very active weather-wise
and we could see more windy days like we did today.
Now tonight, the winds have relaxed just a bit.
Southeast winds only sustained around four miles per hour.
Temptures do go down into the 30s tonight, though,
so there is a frost potential.
as we head into tonight. If you're watching right now and you have potted plants that are outside,
you might want to bring those inside before you go to sleep tonight. For tomorrow morning, starting out
very cold, you'll probably want long sleeves at the very least, but if not a light jacket for the
morning hours. By the afternoon, rising into those low in mid-60s and some spots down in the
sandhills could actually be in the upper half of the 60s. So you're a little close to 70, closer to 70,
I should say, if you're watching from an area like Fayetteville, 68 year high for Roxburgh,
64 tomorrow and then 65 in Raleigh.
We're going to crank this up a notch going into the start of the week with the return of 70s and 80s.
I'll tell you more about that coming up in your seven-day forecast.
Duan, back to you.
Our crews, we'll see you again shortly.
Now would be a good time to download the ABC 11 mobile app.
It's a great way for you to stay up to date on current weather conditions.
Well, now at 11, a man is dead after a domestic disturbance involving two off-duty law enforcement officers.
That man has been identified as Captain Adam Bean.
Cumberland County Sheriff's deputies say they found him with a gunshot wound at a home in the 1600 block of Seattle slew Lane and Hope Mills just before 11 o'clock last night.
He died from his injuries.
And according to the sheriff's office, he began his service with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office back in 2006.
And most recently, served as the assistant chief of detectives.
The FBI is investigating what led up to that shooting.
Also in Cumberland County, the state highway patrol is investigating a three-car crash that left five people hurt.
at the intersection of NC Highway 210 and Polly Island Road.
We know at least one person that'd be airlifted to the hospital.
And four others were also injured in that crash here.
You see investigators are still working to learn what the cause of that crash was.
We're also working to learn more about a serious crash in Harnett County near I-95.
State troopers say the driver of the pickup truck who was detained later tested below the legal limit and then was released.
children and a minivan were seriously hurt, including two who were rejected.
All five people in that van were taken to the hospital.
Troopers say they will meet with the district attorney to determine possible charges.
Well, now at 11, it was a day of nationwide protests.
Today, millions of people in more than 3,000 cities across the country taking part of
the third round of no king's protest.
The rallies were intended to show opposition to President Trump's policies as well as the war in Iran.
Organizers say it was the largest single-day nationwide demonstration in U.S. history with at least 8 million people gathered at more than 3,300 events across all 50 states.
And then here in the Triangle, hundreds of thousands of people joined in those nationwide protests.
You can just see here from our screen, from Raleigh, Durham, Carborough, and Kerry, all today as large crowds filled the streets in opposition to President Trump and his agenda.
Our John Dowding showing us the protests that happened today across the triangle and even share.
with us why attendees felt they needed to make their voices heard.
What we saw today was the third No King's protests within the last year,
bringing out millions around the world and thousands and a handful of protests across the triangle.
From Raleigh.
To Durham.
To Chapel Hill.
And Carrie.
I don't like to carry signs, so I put it on my head.
Thousands across the triangle joined No King's.
King's protests around the world with attendees speaking out against actions taken by the Trump
administration. I'm not one for these things, but I've reached my tipping point. I can't really
stand what's going on in the country anymore. And I felt like I had to take part and help make a
change. Attendees tell eyewitness news several issues brought them out to the protest Saturday.
Well, it's just we've got a war on Iran that we need to object to. Many also protesting immigration
policy and activity by ICE agents in recent months.
I think the violence of ice is really scary and we have to figure out a way to stop that and do what is right and safe for our communities.
We are American citizens. We're belong to the country. We're part of American. So you and we came from different country. We have different culture background. But this country is multicultural.
In a statement about today's protests, the North Carolina GOP said, quote,
Democrats continue to show hating President Trump is a higher priority for them than supporting our military
as they bravely defend our national security against the Iranian regime or funding DHS to secure our own country.
This is democracy in action, protesting, using our rights, exercising them, and making our voices heard in a way that cannot be ignored.
The White House dismissed today's rallies like the ones that took place here in the triangle with a spokesperson,
referring to them as having little real public support in Raleigh this evening.
I'm John Douding. ABC 11. I witness news.
All right, John, thanks so much. Still to come. Golf champion Tiger Woods released from jail.
He's now facing DUI charges after a rollover car crash near his Florida home.
We'll have more details after the break.
And with war with Iran intensifying, the Iran-backed Houthis now joining the war, hitting Israel with multiple strikes today.
And we'll welcome back, Cruz Medina with the check of the tempts again.
Well, temperatures are in the 40s at this time.
But waking up tomorrow, we're going to be in the 30s, and that means frost is possible.
This is your reminder, though.
The average last frost isn't until April 16th.
So hold off on any outdoor planning.
We'll talk about the return of warmer temperatures coming up after the break.

years. We are local news. ABC 11 eyewitness news continues now. Well, new video tonight showing Tiger Woods
leaving jail. Woods played in a tournament earlier this week and was arrested and charged with DUI.
After authorities say he signed swiped another vehicle near his home in Jupiter Island, Florida.
Tonight, here's ABC's Dave Packer with the latest. Newly released video capturing the moment Tiger Woods
was released from the Martin County Jail late Friday. Putage taken by our affiliate, Delft,
WPBF showing him in the passenger seat of a Cadillac SUV.
The 15-time major winner was arrested on DOI charges after authorities say he crashed and rolled his land rover just after 2 p.m. Friday while attempting to pass a truck.
Mr. Woods did exemplify signs of impairment.
Police say no one was injured. Woods agreed to a breathalyzer test and passed the sheriff's office said,
but he refused to take a urine test, which is used to detect drugs or medication.
Just this week, Woods played in ESPN's TGL League.
He took questions about whether he would commit to playing in this year's Masters next month.
Woods has won the tournament five times, most recently in 2019.
This body doesn't recover like it was when it was 24, 25.
It doesn't mean I'm not trying.
I've been trying for a while.
In 2021, Woods was seriously injured after being involved in a rollover crash in Los Angeles.
Deputies say he was driving nearly twice the speed limit in a 45-mile-per-hour zone when he hit a tree.
The golfer was not charged.
the road in the middle of the road.
In 2017, he was charged with DUI after police say they found him passed out behind the wheel of
his damaged SUV.
He later pleaded guilty to reckless driving.
And in 2009, Woods crashed his Cadillac escalate into a fire hydrant just feet from his
home amid rumors about his marriage to then-wife Ellen Nordegren.
Woods is second only to Jack Nicholas in major victories.
But now in the wake of another DUI charge and crash, his legacy is back in focus.
I think he's always going to be remembered as one of the greatest.
golfers of all time, but clearly this tarnishes his image again.
Dave Packer, ABC News, New York.
Well, now to the war with Iran tonight, the Iran-backed Houthis, now joining in the war.
The group carrying out multiple attacks on Israel today.
The group said the attack coincided with the military operations being carried out by Hezbollah and Iran.
The group says it will continue to carry out military operations attacks and aggression until
all have stopped.
It comes as even more U.S. troops are on the way to the Middle East.
Officials telling ABC News a third U.S. aircraft carrier, the USS George H.W. Bush, is now heading to the region.
They will join another additional 2,200 U.S. Marines set to arrive in the region any day now,
and with up to 1,500 paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne preparing to deploy also.
Well, the White House now has a mobile app.
The Trump administration announcing in a social media post Friday that the new app is designed to deliver real-time updates and live streams
straight from the Trump administration.
The app includes a news tab with White House press releases,
a photo gallery, and a social media tab.
It also includes a way to text President Trump
and an ICE tip line to send information
to immigration and customs enforcement.
Meanwhile, the House passing a new bill
to temporarily fund the Department of Homeland Security,
and the move comes as the president
assigned a memorandum directing DHS to start paying TSA workers.
The department says checks should start arriving on Monday.
Well, at the same time, airports across the country are still seeing long lines despite the news.
ABC's Mola Langy is at BWI Airport in Baltimore, where those lines continue to grow.
Well, to say wait times here at BWI have been long would be an understatement.
Average wait times so far today has been about three hours with really no relief in sight.
As you can see, people everywhere.
Lines really moving in every direction, lines twisting and turning throughout the terminal,
stretching from the TSA security checkpoint,
past the airline ticket lines,
past the shops and the restaurants,
past the coffee shops,
and the food courts,
stretching literally outside, out the doors,
down the curb as far as the eye can see,
people waiting hours and hours.
We've had some people tell us two,
three-hour wait times.
Some resigned to the reality
that they could miss their flights,
literally as they wait in line.
And so today's shaping up to be another long and busy day, not just here at BWI, but really throughout the country.
TSA agents obviously continuing to wait on those paychecks.
Some agents waiting three, four, five weeks, and that is causing a lot of this.
In fact, Thursday was the worst day in terms of TSA agents calling out at airports across the country.
Nearly 3,500 TSA officers calling out on Thursday alone, paralyzing some of the nation's busiest airports.
Bush Airport in Houston had the worst of that.
44% of their TSA agents calling out of work on Thursday.
Atlanta had 40% here at BWI was 37%.
And J.F., with air travel picking up here over the next few days and really into next week,
you've got Easter, Passover, spring break.
So this confluence of events between increased air travel and TSA agents calling out leading to a lot of the lines that we're seeing right here.
Officials urging people if you have to travel over the next few days, give yourself plenty of time, minimum of two to three hours, maybe even more at some of the busier airports.
And you certainly want to pack a lot of patience.
Mola Lange, ABC News, Baltimore.
All right, so back here at home, look, we had a day, as we were saying earlier, one of those deceptive.
conceptively cold days where it looks like it's warm outside, but it's not. You still need that jacket out. But I still saw quite a few folks outside, like enjoying the park, running around, like riding a bike. So trying to make the most of today at least. Yeah, you have to do that, right? So 50s today, at least it was sunny. It was a beautiful day despite the wind. And it was a bit chilly, but we're going to see things improve over the next few days. So the warm weather's going to return. Even as we end out the weekend, Sunday's highs are going to be in the 60s. So that's almost 10 degrees warmer than what we saw today, where we only
reach the mid-50s for highs. By the time we get into the start of the week, 70s and 80s are back
in the forecast. So it'll be warm, it'll be nice. That's the shorts weather that you're probably
hoping would stick around. And it's going to return, but we also turn unsettled as we go into the
back half of the week. So even though it'll stay in the 70s, we do have rain and storm chances
on the way over the next seven days. So for tonight, no rain chances. It'll actually be
clear as we go through the course of the night. So the fact that we have clear skies, that's going to
allow our tipters cool all the way down into the 30s, and that's where you start the day off on
Sunday. So I mentioned this a little earlier. You might want to wear at least long sleeves,
if not bring a light jacket with you if you're stepping out to something like church early in the
morning. By the time we get into the afternoon, you probably won't need necessarily a jacket.
You'll probably still want something to keep yourself warm as tipters do reach into the 60s,
but obviously if you're in a shaded area, it might feel a little cooler at time. So the morning hours,
those temperatures are really going to struggle to rise. We are in the 30s all the way through about 9 a.m.
after that jumping into the 40s and then 50s very quickly as we go toward the noon hour.
And then if you're heading out to the Durham Crop Hunger Walk tomorrow, that's going to be at Duke University's campus.
The walk itself takes place right in front of the Duke Chapel.
So that's kind of the meetup area.
And that event begins at 2.30.
So if you're heading out to something like that, tipters will be significantly warmer by then reaching the mid-60s by 4 or 5 p.m.
When we're reaching our peak highs for the day.
Now going into the start of the week, tipter's start out.
the 70s for Monday. What's going to bring in that warmth is high pressure sliding offshore.
That turns our winds back out of the south. And then for Tuesday, we should be in the low 80s.
So from there, we're going to take it up even another notch as we go into Wednesday. That'll be
the warmest day of the week reaching the mid 80s. But throughout Tuesday and Wednesday and into
the back half of the week as well, you're going to notice it's going to feel a bit muggy.
So humidity is starting to become a thing this time of the year as we get deeper into the spring
months. So that moisture content will rise. And this will eventually
allow for some rain chances as this front eventually drops into our region as we go into the late half of Thursday and into Friday as well. So you'll see those rain chances in a second in the seven day forecast. Live look at our Pindo Sky Cam in downtown Raleigh. Tipters right now in the city of Oaks at 44 degrees. Roxborough, you just cooled down to 37. Forty-three still in Fayetteville, but tonight we all go down into the 30s. So prepare for that morning chill as you start the day tomorrow. And then for the afternoon, seasonable. This is exactly where we'd expect our high.
highs to be this time of the year right in the mid-60s all across central North Carolina.
So tomorrow, not a bad day. Great way to end the weekend. And then we're going to start off
the week on a nice note as well with those 70s and 80s. April 1st hitting the warmest temperature
of the week, 84 degrees in Raleigh. And then toward the back half of the week, that's where we
see the shower and storm chances in the forecast. And even though this can be a bit deceptive, it is
not going to be raining at all points during every day. But there will be storms and showers around
at times Thursday through next weekend.
DeWan.
No way around it.
All right.
Thanks, Cruz.

All right, welcome back. Vince Vaughn stars in a new film where he is a time-traveling gangster, of all things.
And for the first time in his career, he's pulling double duty on the screen.
Here's ABC's George Pinocchio.
So there's two necks.
What's happening?
I'm you.
I'm from the future.
They came back.
When it's time is shit.
Vince Fawn plays Nick the gangster from the present.
I thought you were a clone.
And Nick the gangster from the future.
Have you ever heard of the Baron?
He's a cannibal assassin.
In Mike and Nick and Nick and Alice.
Nick from the future goes back in time to right or wrong.
Hoping to keep alive both his gangster colleague Mike, played by James Marsden,
and his wife Alice, played by Aza Gonzalez.
It turns into a wild,
where the bullets are flying and the one-liners keep coming.
Oh, I got to stop drinking while I'm on edibles, man.
This is Vaughn's first time acting in a dual role, which presented its own challenges.
I mean, the technology is amazing. I'm a fan of that, you know, seeing what they're capable of.
It was a lot of wardrobe changing to shoot the same scene, a little bit more double memorizing.
It is incredibly challenging. We're kind of trying to find new things and improvise,
which is part of, you know, the core of comedy itself.
We had a very strong script, so there wasn't much need for improv.
And then you get a few takes as scripted.
And then if you have any ideas, he kind of left that open-ended for us, for me and Aza and
Vince to play around a bit.
Ultimately, Vaughn says the film is about second chances.
I think you can revisit situations and do a better job, sometimes in bigger ways or smaller
ways, sometimes with relationships.
And if given the chance to use a real-time machine, the stars'
have their own ideas about where they'd end up.
There's part of me that also wants to go back to these historical events
and just check them out live, you know, like, you know, the dinosaurs.
I think for me, I'd be really curious to go in the moment that we were conquered in Mexico.
I've always found that part of history fascinating.
I wouldn't do it because I think you have to go through those lessons.
And I'd probably be nervous.
I'd make things worse.
In Los Angeles, George Panacchio for ABC News.
All right.
Now it's time to talk all things sports with Kate Rogers and if you've been watching any part of the TV lately, March madness is, it's insane right now.
I'm loving every part of it.
I'm loving it, but I think I'm also kind of sad because we're getting to the end.
We're getting to the best part as we approach the lead eight.
But our volume of gains is decreasing, but the volume of gains and the competition has been phenomenal.

Last night, Duke men's and women's basketball showed us what it means to survive in advance.
But in March isn't easy.
Spots to the final four are on the line.
Trayvon Miles joins us from D.C.
where John Shire has Duke men preparing for another elite eight matchup, this time versus Yukon.
For a third year in a row, John Shire and Duke will play for a spot in college basketball's premier event, the final four.
In three tournament wins this season, Duke has had to win three different ways.
If they want to get a fourth, they'll have to switch it up again against a team with a lot of championship experience in Yukon.
For us to get these two big-time programs, big-time rivalry, I would say, just for us to get this matchup on the East Coast, it's going to be a great game.
Obviously, they run a lot of sets, and it's impossible to go through all their sets in one day.
So we've just been just focusing on personnel, like, knowing who you're a guard.
If you're not engaged, they're going to make you pay for it.
And on the defensive side, they're one of the best teams that protecting the paint.
They have a top 10 defense.
So just taking smart shots, taking care of the ball.
And then on the defensive side, just making it tougher.
It's an elite game.
You know, it's time to have an edge on us defensively.
And just understanding that, you know, we cannot have slow stars.
We have to communicate.
You know, there's mistakes we're not allowed to make anymore, you know.
The prestige, the history, and a combined 11 national championships between these two,
programs is why so many people can't wait for Sunday's matchup with a spot in Indianapolis
on the line. From here in Washington, D.C., Trayvon Miles, ABC 11, eyewitness news. Duke women's basketball
had the ultimate March badness moment last night when Ashland Jackson hit the three versus
LSU right at the buzzer. I still can't believe the way this thing spun in and fell into the
rim. Now, the Blue Devils are in the lead eight for the second straight season. They're
one one away from advancing to the final four for the first time since 2006.
Toby Fournier says her team is built for the moment.
Beating LSU boosted their confidence.
Now it's all about taking down the one seed, UCLA.
I think it's really important to carry the energy that you have, you know, from this game into the next game.
I think it gave us a level of confidence.
I mean, I think that we were confident before, but I think this kind of just showed what we can do not only defensively
because we're known as a defensive team but also offensively as well.
A private jet with ties to NC State Athletics was on the move today.

men's basketball coach after Will Wade left for LSU.
Tennessee associate head coach and former NC State player, Justin Ganey has interviewed for the gig.
The Valls are currently getting ready for an elite eight game versus Michigan.
Ganey's boss, though, Rick Barnes, a hometown North Carolina guy, was asked if he thinks Gainey has what it takes to take over the pack.
Well, I hope he gets that job because I don't think there's anyone in the country that loves NC State more than Justin Ganey.
Justin is, he's got an incredible feel for the game.
He really understands players.
He works at it.
Terrific recruiter, understands the NIL era today.
If NC State knew what I knew, they would be begging him to be their next head coach.
That is quite the endorsement for someone with big shoes to fill in Raleigh.
Speaking of Raleigh, the Keynes picked up a big 5-2 win over the New Jersey Devils.
Goaltender Brandon Bussie made 19 quality saves, but chival.
Check out this hustle play right here from Seth Jarvis.
But two minutes to play in the third,
Jarvie scored a short-handed empty-netter for his 30th goal on the season.
After the win, head coach Rod Brindamor said being a 30-goal score
for three straight years in the NHL, that's no small feat.
It's not easy to do that in this league.
And we kind of just ho-hum, you know, but again,
he delete goes to the consistency of the way he plays every night.
You have a chance to put up numbers like that.
and obviously you got to be a skill player.
And we know what he is.
Skills on the ice, skills off the ice.
Seth Jarvis is one of a kind.
And of course, tomorrow our eyes are going to be on the hardwood
between Duke men and Duke women.
Duke women, of course, playing right here on ABC 11 at 3 o'clock.
The men at 5 o'clock.
We'll see if we have two Blue Devil teams going to the Final Four.
Yeah, I just want to know what you and Trey have in your diet.
I mean, look, Cain's winning tonight, okay?
Yep.
The men just barely beat St. John's.

All right, look, still to come, Arno King's protest coverage continues.
We're talking with demonstrators who fill the streets of Raleigh and Durham this afternoon.
Plus, the Raleigh Metro growing by leaps and bounds.
We'll take a look at the new data that shows how the capital city is outpacing other regions.
