Right now, live coverage from your local newsleader, preparing you for tomorrow starting tonight and your first alert forecast.
Here's what's happening where you live.
This is ABC 11 eyewitness news.
All right now at 11, Mother's Day brunch at a Durham restaurant ends abruptly after a fight between employees leads to gunfire.
Eyewitnesses describing the moment when chaos broke out.
There was an employee that came running out of the kitchen with our hands up screaming.
How that man and others jumped into action to stop the alleged gunman.
And it's a story gaining international attention.
Passengers who are on board the cruise ship at the center of a deadly hand-a-virus outbreak
are heading back to the U.S. tonight.
We'll have those stories for you just ahead.
But first, we are first alerting you to rain in your forecast.
Skies in both Raleigh and Durham tonight are clear,
but you may want to keep that umbrella nearby because it's looking to be a wet start to your work and school week.
You're watching I went as students at 11 this Sunday evening.
Thank you so much for choosing us on this Mother's Day.
I'm Dewan Hogarth.
Now, we hope that you enjoy the warm, a beautiful day because rain is in your forecast for the start of your week.
So for that, we'll introduce meteorologist Cruz Medina into our conversation tonight.
Cruz, go ahead and explain to us when and where we might see some of those showers pop up tomorrow.
Well, Dewan, that rain chance will increase as we go into the midday on your Monday.
So I'm going to track this out for you over the next 24 hours and notice through tonight there is no rain chance.
Tomorrow morning as you head into work or your kids are heading to the bus stop.
There's also no rain chance there.
So once we get into the afternoon.
So this is slated for Raleigh Durham and you can see that peaks around noon.
We'll see a drop off and then we could see another round as we go into the late afternoon slash early evening hours.
So all of tomorrow is not going to be wet and there will be some areas that completely miss out on the rain.
Today it's going to favor our northern counties, but again, tonight, there is no rain in the forecast. So overnight, Tipters will be in the middle to upper 50s. We will see clouds increasing as we go toward daybreak. And tomorrow, tipters will rise kind of slowly, just depending on how much cloud cover you have in your region. By the time we get into the midday, that's also when we expect our tipters to peak. So once the rain starts to move in, this will allow tipters to drop just a little bit. So back to the mid-60s we go. Tipters will be warmest in areas like the triangle.
and the sand hills. Now in the sand hills, it's possible you even see a few storms tomorrow with this rain moving in.
There are two separate waves of rain. One will favor our northern counties. The other will favor those southern areas like the sand hills.
We'll be tracking that out with first alert predictor coming up in your extended forecast. Back to you.
All right, Cruz, we'll see you again shortly. And with the possibility of rain in the forecast, now it would be a good time to download the ABC 11 app.
It's a great way for you to stay up to date on the current weather conditions and check the Doppler net in real time.
In Durham, Mother's Day brunch took a turn for some people in Durham after gunfire erupted inside of a restaurant.
It happened at the Silver Spoon Restaurant on North Rocksboro Street.
Police say two employees were arguing when one man stepped in to intervene.
One of those employees then fired a gun and hit the man who was trying to de-escalate the situation.
Our Tom George is live in Durham for this evening.
Tom, good evening to you.
I just see the restaurant there behind you.
Many folks just trying to enjoy a Mother's Day brunch.
Yeah, that's right to want. Even right now, when you look through the window, you can still see the Mother's Day balloons. It was a packed house. People trying to enjoy the celebration with their families, even some children inside when that gunfire erupted. And that is when some people stepped in to subdue the gunmen before things could get any worse.
Inside the Silver Spoon, a family-run restaurant packed with people celebrating mom.
There was just a roof full. It was just a lot of elderly people, a lot of families.
celebrating of course mothers and just having a good time.
Derek Parnell and his wife had just finished up their meal and were about to go get food to go to bring to his own mom who wasn't feeling well.
And then there was just this loud pop.
Shots coming from the kitchen, the restaurant erupting into chaos.
And then just seconds later there was an employee that came running out of the kitchen with our hands up screaming,
asking for help and saying get out, get out, everybody get out.
He looked for his wife and then they ran out and so the
the parking lot when he heard one of the restaurant workers calling for help. That's when he and
others helped stop the gunman. I grabbed the lower part of the gentleman and we took him to the
ground and him just basically held on to it. That suspect, an employee of the restaurant who had gotten
into an argument with another employee when another employee tried to break it up and was shot.
After holding down the gunman, police arresting 55-year-old Samar Sulaiman al-Mamud.
It all comes a year after another Mother's Day shooting. Last year, a fight led to gunfire at
Eds in Raleigh where families were also gathering. Back in Durham, Parnell says the entire situation
is heartbreaking at a mom and pop shop that's a staple in the community. But there's no sense in it.
And, you know, I just hope he gets the justice that he deserves that. Yeah, very difficult for the
family who runs the restaurant right here. We do know the victim was taken to the hospital
in critical condition. As for that suspect who was arrested, we know that they are going to be
facing our charges, including assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill in Durham.
George, ABC 11. I witness news. All right, Tom, thank you. Meanwhile in Wake County, a man is
facing multiple charges tonight after a single vehicle fatal crash in Raleigh. It happened overnight
in the 400 block of South New Hope Road. Police say the driver of a Toyota Raff 4 was speeding
when he traveled into the median and struck a tree. The impact caused the vehicle to slide
sideways on the driver's side into a larger tree before overturning. Two passengers in that
vehicle died from their injuries. Police say the driver, 19-year-old Jonathan DeLora Olmos,
was taken to the hospital. He has been charged with driving while impaired and felony death
by motor vehicle. Well, now to a traffic alert for drivers in Wake County, a portion of Capitol
Boulevard in Raleigh is closed while crews work to repair a water main break. The water main
break happened at the intersection of Capitol Boulevard in Ratchford Drive. It's unclear tonight what
caused the water main to break. All southbound lands are being detoured to.
the far left lane as crews work to repair the break. So far, no word yet, when that road will reopen.
Well, tonight, American passengers on that cruise ship at the center of a Hantavirus outbreak are now
heading to the U.S. They're being taken to the National Quarantine Unit in Omaha, Nebraska,
after disembarking in Tenerife. Video shows passengers being taken by bus today after they got off
the boat. A health official say the federal government does not have a plan to quarantine them
and say this is not likely to become another global pandemic like COVID-19.
ABC's Alison Kosick has more.
Tonight, 17 Americans and one British passenger on board a cruise ship.
The site of that deadly hauntavirus outbreak are expected to arrive in Omaha, Nebraska.
Earlier in the day, disembarking the M.V. Hondias anchored off Tenerife in small groups.
ABC's Maggie Rooley was there.
Those are the Americans on board that evacuation boat.
finally leaving the cruise ship.
You can see they're having small groups being buried back and forth.
They're all dressed in that full-length protective blue gear.
One of them was not even turned around and waved goodbye to the cruise ship.
The Americans then loaded onto buses giving a wave as they headed towards their flights.
Officials initially said no one on board had any symptoms of hauntavirus.
But today, French authorities say a French passenger fell ill in the middle of their repatriation flight.
As you know, the last death from the current outbreak was on May 2nd.
So we haven't recorded any death after that.
And we hope there will not be any death, but we will monitor strictly.
Three people have died in this outbreak, one of them, a 70-year-old Dutch national.
Authorities believe the first victims traveled to the Patagonia region where the virus is circulating.
Yes, we know that the first passengers, the first cases did travel to those regions.
we just don't know which specific ones.
U.S. health officials are monitoring nine Americans
who left the ship several weeks ago across several states.
None has displayed any symptoms.
During his prayer in St. Peter's Square,
Pope Leo, who plans to visit the Canary Islands next month,
thanked residents for their hospitality shown to the M.V. Hondias and its passengers.
Alison Kosuk, ABC News, New York.
Well, next at 11, Iran responds to a U.S.
proposal to end the war, the new request from the country, and why President Trump is rejecting
the plan. And with most pools set to open in just a few weeks, we've got tips on how you can
keep your young children safe on enjoying the water this summer. And Cruz Medina back with a check
of our tents outside. All right, well, it's still very mild at this hour. Tipters right now are
probably warmer than they will be at any point throughout the day tomorrow. And we've got that
rain moving in, but another chance on Wednesday. We'll track that out coming up in your seven-day
forecast. Well, now to the latest tonight in the war with Iran, the country responding to the
U.S. proposal to end the war. President Donald Trump calling it, in his words, totally unacceptable.
All of it raising major questions tonight of when and how this conflict will end.
ABC's Tom Sophie Burridge is in Tel Aviv tonight.
Tonight, with the street of Hormuz still blocked amid a fragile ceasefire,
President Trump rejecting Iran's response to a U.S. interim proposal to end the war.
in a post on social media, I have just read the response from Iran's so-called representatives,
I don't like it. Totally unacceptable. The one-page US proposal would see Iran relinquish its
stranglehold over the Strait of Hormuz, allowing free passage for the 1,500 cargo vessels
trapped in the Persian Gulf and providing some relief for the world's economy and gas prices in the
US. In return, the US would gradually ease its military blockade on Iranian ports, with the
further 30-day period then beginning to negotiate a full deal.
We see now Iran's economy an absolute freefall.
Its currency is down over 100%.
Its foreign currency reserves are completely exhausted.
Tonight, those short-term compromises seemingly in jeopardy,
more than a month after the ceasefire took hold.
According to a source speaking with an Iranian state-link news agency,
Iran's response included demands like an end to the war
and the lifting of oil sanctions within 30 days.
In a new interview, the president telling Sinclair's full measure, the U.S. could still bomb Iran again.
I said they are defeated, but that doesn't mean they're done.
We could go in for two more weeks and do every single target.
Americans feeling the cost of the war with rising prices at the gas pump.
The energy secretary saying today the administration is open to suspending the federal gas tax.
All measures that can be taken to,
to lower the price at the pump and lower the prices for Americans, this administration is in support of.
The main sticking point in the negotiations with Iran, the future of its nuclear program,
and with no breakthrough in ending the war, it's just days before President Trump is expected to travel to Iran's key ally China
for a crucial summit with Chinese President Xi.
Tom Sufi Barich, ABC News, Tel Aviv.
Well, the remains of a U.S. soldier who went missing during military exercises in Morocco a week ago,
have been recovered in the Atlantic Ocean. The U.S. Army announced that news today.
Military teams were still searching for a second missing soldier. The remains were those of
First Lieutenant Kendrick Key Jr., a fourth air defense artillery officer, who was one of two U.S.
soldiers who fell off a cliff during a recreational hike in Morocco while off duty.
Lieutenant Key was just 27 years old. Well, new tonight with things outside warming up,
swimmers will soon find themselves in area, pools, and lakes. But before you and your family decide to hit the water,
You may want to make sure everyone is prepared as May is National Water Safety Month.
Bianca Holman sharing how parents can ensure everyone is comfortable in the water.
Drowning is fast and silent, and it can happen in a matter of seconds.
That's according to the American Red Cross.
With summer six weeks away, that's why Carrie Mother Karina enrolled her baby girl Sky into swim lessons.
We wanted to give her the opportunity to learn swimming as soon as she could expose her to water.
so that whenever, first of all, we go back to Europe, she can swim.
Swim educators, Jeffrey and Pamela Gorton, recommend the younger, the better.
We are going to start with safety skills as early as possible,
and we're also going to be focused on helping them learn how their body works in the water
and reacts in the water, and we do that through a lot of fun and song and activities.
Drowning is the number one cause of accidental death for children ages 1 to 4,
and since May is National Water Safety Month, advocates want to save lives.
When I was talking to a friend who's an EMT, he told me, Jeff, you have to do this.
Because if you can save one child's life because they learned how to swim in the water, then it's all worth it.
During class, babies learn about safe entry, how to float, and how their bodies can be used to save them.
But it's not just for kids.
What's most important for us is to make sure that the parents understand or the family understands that it's always their responsibility.
to be monitoring their children in the water.
We never want them to believe that swimming is going to be the answer or any skills like that.
Children need to be monitored in the water.
It has been really, really great experience.
She's very relaxed in the water.
We feel safe.
We feel supported.
And what happens in the water stays forever.
Swimming is not only an activity.
It is a life-saving skill.
That's when we want to make sure that our children know that they can have that skill all through a whole life.
Bianca Holman, ABC 11, Eyewitness News.
Bianca, thank you. And in just a few weeks, public pools across the triangle will officially open for the season.
In Wake County, swimming pools open May 26th. Cumberland County pools are set to open May 25th and splash pads in the area opened earlier this month.
And as of right now, Durham County has not said yet when their pools will open.
We want to wish all the moms and the mom figures out there a very happy Mother's Day from all of us here at ABC 11.
So whether you decided to honor her with a homemade card, flowers, or dinner she doesn't have to cook.
Now, here's a little story, a little history about the holiday.
In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as a national holiday for honoring mothers.
But the idea for the day was inspired by two mothers during the Civil War who pushed for a Mother's Day for peace.
The first observance happened in 1908 and the first national observance was three years later.
So again, happy Mother's Day to all the moms, the mom figures, the God moms, the grandmothers, the step moms, if you want, everything in between Happy Mother's Day.
And it was a perfect day for it. And tomorrow we're getting a little bit of wetness.
Yeah, so today we had all of the sunshine. I hope people got to get out and enjoy that.
Tomorrow will be a little more cloudy. And obviously we have that rain chance to break down as well.
So tomorrow would be nice to bring an umbrella with you as you head out the door just so that you know if you get caught under a shout.
in the afternoon, you will stay dry.
Now by the time we get into the middle of the week,
Wednesday night, we're watching out for another chance of rain.
This one will also bring a chance of storms in the mix.
I think that one's going to be a bit more widespread
than what we see tomorrow.
And then as we go into next weekend,
we're watching out for tipters to soar into the middle and upper 80s.
So it's going to feel more like summer with those temperatures.
Tonight, all is quiet in our region,
but back to our north, you can see this area of energy.
So it's a front moving through.
That's what you see some of those.
showers kind of in a line segment extending from the Virginia's all the way back to Tennessee.
That's one area that we'll be watching for. The other one is coming down from Alabama.
So that little cluster of showers you see there, that's what's going to track into areas like
the sandhills and the coastal plain for tomorrow. So I'll show you what that looks like on first
alert predictor. Once again, tonight, there is no chance of rain. Tomorrow morning, there's also
no chance of rain. So you're stepping out the door, it's going to be dry, but you will notice
the clouds increasing ahead of this weathermaker.
So by midday, we could have a few showers from the first round.
The first round will favor those southern areas.
The second round moves in late afternoon and into the evening.
That will favor areas along the North Carolina-Virginia border.
So as this rain moves out, we will be drying out into early Tuesday.
Tuesday will feature more sunshine and tipters will be just a little bit warmer compared to tomorrow as well.
So this is going to be less than impressive for most of us tomorrow.
If we can get some storms going in the sandhills tomorrow, these totals could be a little bit higher.
But across our northern counties, I think that's the best chance at seeing anywhere from 0.05 to about a tenth of an inch of rain.
So once again, that's right along the Virginia border and clears out pretty quickly.
So the umbrella is not needed all day, but it's best to have it handy in case you do need it at some time in the afternoon.
You can see tipters are going to struggle to rise as a result of the cloud cover in the rain.
We'll only see Tipters peak around 60 degrees and then stay in the 50s for our northern counties for the rest of the day.
In the triangle, you'll be near 70 degrees and then in the sand hills, those will be some of the warmest spots as that cluster starts to move toward you.
Winds will be out of the south ahead of it.
And then behind that, winds for most of us should be out of the north.
That's what's going to help us dry out and bring back the sunshine into Tuesday.
By Wednesday, we're tracking an additional front.
This is the one that brings the chance of rain Wednesday night.
So it's mainly after sunset that we'll have to worry about those wet conditions.
Temperatures will push to near 80 degrees as we go into Wednesday.
So lots of changes on the way in our forecast.
I'll take you outside real quick.
This is our Pendo SkyCam and Raleigh, 70 degrees right now.
So still very mild, but Roxborough has dropped to 57 degrees.
Your first alert, seven-day forecast.
This shows a fine finish to the week.
So Thursday and Friday, those are both sunny and dry days.
By the time we get into next weekend, temperature will range from the middle to a
So if you've been missing the summer like heat, we've got some of that in the forecast as well.
It's just not going to come tomorrow. The one. Back to you. I just got to hang on for a little bit.
Thanks, Bruce. Our thousands of Duke graduates turning their tassels today when we come back.
We'll take a look at the big commencement ceremony celebrating the class of 2026.
Well, there was a special day over at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham. Duke University holding its commencement ceremony this morning.
The ceremony celebrated the graduating classes of September 2020.
December 2025 and spring 2026.
Amy Hood, Duke University grad and Microsoft Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
was the commencement speaker.
Well, today it marks the start of National Police Week.
It's a time to honor law enforcement officers, especially those who gave their lives in the line of duty.
Tomorrow, the Raleigh Police Department is holding the Wake County Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Ceremony.
They will honor officers killed while on the job, including Gabriel Torres.
The Raleigh police officer killed back in the 2022 Headingham neighborhood mass shooting.
They will also honor Roger Smith.
He is the Wake Med Campus police officer who was shot and killed while at work last year.
Tomorrow's ceremony is happening at 10.30 a.m. at Hayes Barton Baptist Church there in Raleigh.
All right, so it's time to talk sports for that.
We have the hardest working sports journalists here in the triangle.
It got a butter up a little bit.
Look, we're coming off of a great game last night.
Tonight, just, the world is yours.
Last night when the canes were in the locker room celebrating their win,
not only were they chanting, hey, we're going on to the next round.
We got two days off.
So the guys were able to get home probably pretty late to Raleigh.
Spend some time with their moms and their wives.
And get a chance to rest, and that's going to be key,
because the Eastern Conference final might not be as easy those first two rounds.
We're talking about the Carolina Hurricanes when we come back with sports.
