Well, right now at 11, police in Chapel Hill and Raleigh are investigating dozens of overnight vehicle break-ins. This evening, we were hearing from one of those victims and why she thinks police aren't doing enough to keep the community safe. We're also learning new details about a deadly shooting this afternoon in Durham. what police are telling Iowa news tonight about the moments, those shots were fired. And a happy ending for a dog found trapped inside of a dumpster in Durham.

Kingston the dog went home with his forever family today. Plus the latest on the search for a person of interest in this case. But first at 11, we are tracking the potential for more rain across the triangle in our overnight hours. It's dry right now in both downtown Raleigh and Durham. But on this first alert, Doppler net, you can see those showers and storms out right now to our west. The rain could be heavy at times, or you might even hear some thunder. But let's talk about the showers we're seeing out there right now. live look at first alert Doppler tonight a little bit of lightning associated with this line this line is slowly advancing to the east so it's not going to be severe weather you have to worry about overnight but if you have a fur baby or a real baby who gets troubled by the lightning and thunder you may get an extra person in the bed tonight live look at the showers just approaching roxborough in person county and down into orange county we'll head live to roxborough right now you can see the low cloud deck partly cloudy sky is calm at the moment but that will change as rain arrives there over the next 15 minutes. Temperatures have cooled off in the shower. 70 now Roanoke Rapids, 72 for you in Lewisburg, 77 Chapel Hill, Raleigh, 78 Fayetteville, and 78 in Clinton. Let's first alert you to the forecast for tomorrow. Today we saw the clouds roll in late in the day, had those pop-up shower sunset happened around 727 tonight. As we go through the overnight and into tomorrow,

we'll see a spotty shower around again. The bigger story will be the temperature as we top out in the 90s, but we have cooler air on the way. All right now at 11A in Wake County, police are investigating after a man fired shots into an auto repair shop in Raleigh. It happened to this afternoon just after 12, 3rd, at MB Auto Service on Renfrode Road.

Raleigh police say 54-year-old Elvin Fields shot into the business after a payment dispute over repairs. According to documents obtained by Iowanus News, police alleged Fields also fired his weapon outside the business as well and then drove off. A police found Fields not far away there on South Saunders Street where they took him in the custody and recovered two weapons. Fields is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, felony kidnapping, and a number of other gun-related charges. he is due in court on Monday. Also, new tonight, a woman is dead following a shooting in South Durham. It happened around 1.30 this afternoon. Police say the woman was driving on Revere Road towards Sedwick Road when someone opened fire.

The gunfire hit her and the passenger. She died at the scene. The passenger was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover. Investigators are asking anyone with information about this shooting to come forward. On new tonight, law enforcement across the triangle is sounding the 11th. alarm after a series of car break-ins overnight into Saturday morning. Nearly 90 cars were targeted across the town of Chapel Hill and Briar Creek. Our Penelby Lopez speaking with victims tonight and has the latest on what happened plus what officials I want you to keep in mind.

After nearly 60 vehicle break-ins in Chapel Hill and 27 in Briar Creek, officials are urging drivers to remain alert and to avoid leaving valuables in their cars. This is not the Saturday morning Olivia had hoped for. It's just really unfortunate. It's going to be raining for the next couple of days. So we're going to have to rush to get the window fixed. You know, most insurance doesn't cover like breakings. According to Chapel Hill Police, the suspects moved fast between three and four 30 in the morning, hitting mostly hotel and apartment parking lots, smashing windows along the way. And then you had to put yellow painters tape all over and seal it in the inside. And she is not alone. Others were also hit. Sophie Bozemsky, who lives at Timber Hollow apartments like Olivia, was also targeted. I went to bed and woke up around three hearing some commotion.

Sound like people were arguing or loud noises outside. I didn't know what was going on, but it makes sense that meanwhile, my car was being, you know, broken into. This was Bozzymsky's second time in the past couple of months. I actually was smart enough to bring my wallet out this time because last time they took the wallet. It's really frustrating because it's violating. It's vandalism. It is an invasion of privacy and safe space. And this is some of the aftermath shattered windows and glass everywhere.

And it didn't stop there. Two hotel parking lots in Briar Creek had 27 more cars broken into around five Saturday morning. Sophie says she's going to have to pay $500 to get her car window fix. It's a great place to live. But I think the security around Chapel Hill just needs to be picked up a little bit because you can never be too safe. An official say they're working closely to see if any of the break-ins are connected. Reporting in the Raleigh eyewitness News Center, I'm Penelope Lopez, ABC 11, eyewitness news. Tonight we're also working to learn more about a woman hit and killed by an Amtrak train. It happened last night near the state fairgrounds right off of Hillsborough Street and Powell Drive, right behind the Burke Brothers Hardware Store. Our breaking news crew was there on the ground, as you see as police were conducting their investigation. RPD is working to find out why the woman was on the tracks. So far, they have not identified her. Well, new tonight, President Donald Trump spending the weekend in Ireland to meet with the country's leaders on attend a golf tournament. The president making headlines with his comments about a unified Ireland.

ABC's Michelle Franzen explains tonight. Well, I don't want to cause any problems, but I will tell you, I'd love to see it unified. On a trip to Ireland, President Trump expressed interest in seeing the end of a divided country. I have friends on both sides. Great people. They're Irish people. How can they be bad, right? I'd love to see it, beautiful.

I think it would be a great a great feather in everybody's cap if that happened. It's going to happen eventually. The comments break with previous U.S. presidents who have supported the peace agreement while remaining neutral on reunification.

The island is divided between Northern Ireland, home to Protestants under UK rule, and the Irish Republic comprised of mostly Catholics. Violence escalated in the late 1960s during a period known as the Troubles and ended with the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. The United States played a key role in helping broker that peace deal. Under the Good Friday Agreement, Northern Ireland remains part of the UK,

unless voters there and in the Republic of Ireland choose unification. Today in Dublin, thousands protested President Trump's visit with some criticizing his comments. To say it like that, well, that is going to destroy alienate the people we're trying to negotiate with in the north. the DUP and other elements. It's just ridiculously irresponsible and childish. I'm in favour of the United Ireland, but I don't think it is Donald Trump's place to comment on the situation in this country. And he really has no idea of the history or any understanding of what the people are coming from here.

Trump's words are also drawing sharp criticism from pro-British unionist leaders in Northern Ireland, who say its future must be decided by the people who live there. President Trump later acknowledged there is no good answer. answer to the question of reunification, the UK's prime minister says a referendum is off the table. Michelle Franzen, ABC News, New York. Well, happening now, you have your first chance to see some rare pieces of American history. Three historic copies of the Declaration of Independence dating back to the early 1800s are on display in Durham. You can check them out at the Durham County Main Library right now through September the 20th.

This is video shared with us by Duke University of that exhibit being set up. The three rare prints are on loan from the David M. Rubinstein Americana collection. And after their stop downtown, the copies will make their way to Duke University's National Museum of Art, where they will be on display until early January. And a heads up for all the travelers out there. RDU Airport is getting another international destination. Valeris is launching non-stop flights to Guadalajara, Mexico, beginning October the October. The service will connect our area's research triangle region to the technology hub known as the Silicon. Valley of Mexico. Guadalajara joins Cancun and Mexico City as R2U's third

destination there in Mexico. Well, new tonight a happy ending for a dog that was found trapped inside of a dumpster in Durham. The pup now named Kingston went home with his new family today. The Animal Protection Society of Durham says Kingston's adopter has experienced rehabilitating dogs and resonated with this story. And since being rescued, Kingston has been at the APS of Durham being treated for a skin infection. He will continue his recovery in his new home and the shelter says, Kingston warmed up quickly with the staff and has a playful side. They also thanked the community for their outpouring of support. Meanwhile, the search continues for a person

of interest seen here near the dumpster where Kingston was found. Anyone who recognizes this person on your screen, you should contact the Durham County Sheriff's Office. Well, still to come tonight an emotional return to the stage for music icons, Celine Dion. More on her first residency after stepping away from the spotlight due to health issues. Climbing 110 stories, all in remembrance of the September 11th terror attacks. The 26th Tunnel to Towers Raleigh 9-11 tower climb, seeing a major turnout this morning.

Bianca Holman sharing how this event will benefit families still impacted by this tragedy 25 years later. When I saw those towers come down, it just devastated me. Gene Ben-Bonito grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and climbs the stairs of the Wells Fargo building in Raleigh for her friend Doris's husband, Billy Link. He was on ladder 15. Lawrence climbs for Eric Olson, who was on ladder 15 the day the towers were struck in Manhattan. Some of them never sold their families. Some of there did. You know, there was a lot of people that was taken from us. A lot of very good souls. These firefighters had to go through hell and back. They had to go through many flights of stairs and all the way back down and they had to repeat that process multiple times.

The 26 tunnel to towers Raleigh 9-11 tower climb is an event to honor the first responders who climbed 110 stories to rest. you as many people as they could. Participants climbing 30 floors on Fayetteville Street multiple times, all in remembrance. We almost reached our goal. Our goal was 10 grand this year. We're a few hundred dollars short. All that goes towards all the programs that tunnel of towers does by paying off mortgages, building smart homes for disabled veterans.

Each person understanding the weight still felt to this day. I just lost my cousin Gary Howard. He's FDNY captain and he just succumbed to his 9-11. 11 illnesses last month. I see what happens and I've seen how it affects these families and I feel terrible for them. If I could take the pain away, it's all I would want to do for them. A dark moment in America's history, but events like this one promote solidarity and unity. All I want to do is help people and make the world a better place and just try my hardest.

I hope every year it continues to grow so that people remember we should never forget. In Raleigh, Bianca Holman, ABC 11, eyewitness news. Bianca, many thanks. And since that tragic day, 25 years ago, September 11th, has been transformed into a day of giving back for many people. The anniversary of the 9-11 attacks is now a federally recognized National Day of Service. Members of the Disney Volunteers Program were at the Intrepid Museum in Manhattan yesterday, packing meals for people in need. And among those there, Disney CEO, Josh Diomaro, Deborah O'Connell, Chairman of Disney Entertainment Television, Kevin Martinez of ESPN as well as the president of ABC News.

The idea to make September 11th the day of service was first conceived back in 2002 to honor the spirit and unity, a spirit of unity and service that many people had after the attacks. Well, now to the posthumous honor for the late Great Dali Parton, the Metro Nashville Airport Authority voted yesterday to begin the process of renaming the Nashville International Airport after the legendary country singer. Well, in a unanimous vote, the board. approved a resolution to change the airport's name in honor of Parton. Now it could take six months to a year before travelers can officially book a flight into or out of Dolly Parton International Airport. And Dolly died last month at the age of 80 following a brief battle with cancer.

A new tonight in emotional return to the stage for legendary singer Celine Dion. Tonight, the performer was seen a tearing up at the start of a 16-date residency just outside of Paris. Now this is no ordinary concert series for her. It's our first major run since stepping away from the spotlight back in 2022 due to stiff person syndrome, which is a rare neurological and autoimmune disorder. A Dion sang all of her greatest hits in a show that lasted more than two hours. Well, the Atlantic hurricane season already won for the record books and not in the way that you might actually think. We are 103 days into the hurricane season and no hurricanes have formed in the Atlantic. ocean, which is a new record for us. Now, since the satellite era began back in 1966, September the 11th was the latest date for the first hurricane to form during the Atlantic hurricane

season. Well, September is the peak of the hurricane season, and as of now, no storms are expected in the foreseeable future. The lack of hurricanes in the Atlantic is the result of the strengthening El Nino there in the Pacific. All right, let's go and talk all things weather. For that, we have Chief Minerologist John Schwinnaker in for Cruz. Medina, tonight crew, not always good to see you. I know that you're on a high because your team won tonight, but you're also on a high because you're keeping a close eye on this forecast. Yeah, and we really lucked out.

We had hopscots going on downtown. It's wrapping up now, and they got done before the showers get here. The really heavy rain still to the west of us tonight. That as we get into Roxborough, heavy rain, even some

rumbles of thunder with this, not severe, but certainly putting down some heavier rainfall that extends down into Orange County, Alamance County, Rock Creek, down into Chatham County, Silar City, a little bit of lightning and thunder with that. Carthage, you may miss out on the tail end of this. This could be close whether that catches you or not from there down to Pinehurst. Live look on our Durham camera, Mutual Tower Sky Cam every now and then we'll get some flashes of lightning off in the distance. Seventy-7 and mostly cloudy rain not in the city of medicine just yet. 77 Chapel Hill, 73 this hour in Wake Forest in Rollsville, 75 Nightdale, Clayton, 76 Garner, 77 Holly Springs, 74 Roxborough, 72 in Oxford, 70 Roneograpids, 77 Rocky Mount,

78 Clinton, Fayetteville, 79 in Pinehurst. And we'll stay in the 70s in most locations tonight to normal as 64, so this is well above average for this time of year. Now if you're headed out to church in the morning and Sunday services. There could be showers early. Lots of cloud cover around will be in the 70s by lunchtime. We get up to 85 degrees. Satellite radar composite shows this line that will advance east and bring us the rain. It's happening as we get into the cooler part of the daytime, the overnight hour. So this will weaken as it pushes through. Once this pushes through, there's still a boundary out west that works in that will bring us some cooler air for the midweek. And it also brings a break in the humidity. Let's zoom it in, though. First, Lur predictor forecast model. Here's the line of showers that works through overnight by 3, 4 in the morning. You still could see some through the triangle. Then it presses out of here as we head toward 8, 9 in the morning. It'll still be cloudy, a little damp out there. By the afternoon, lots of dry time. That front's going to hold off getting through, though, until Monday. And until it does, we'll see temperatures in the 70s, Monday afternoon, an isolated shower, upper 80s. And then that dryer cooler.

But some experts say the technology may be evolving too fast, and they're sounding the alarm tonight about AI security and what it can mean for the future. ABC's Elizabeth Shulze has the story tonight. The power of AI products is once again triggering alarm bells. Every AI company that I've followed seems to be cutting corners these days. They're all racing to get products out the door because,

they're all locked in competition. Meta now launching Muse, a personal AI agent that doesn't just answer questions. It sends your emails, books your travel, spends your money, and works around the clock on a private computer in Meta's cloud, even when you close the app. The idea is giving everyone an agent that can understand your goals and can just work on your behalf 24-7 without you even needing to go do a lot more. To work for you, Muse needs access to your email, your calendar, and your accounts, and it remembers what it sees. With these AI agents, all of this information is being poured into one pot, which means that information that's relevant in one context could end up bleeding into another, and then they can take action with that information.

Meta insists Muse runs in a lockdown environment, but critics have doubts. Warning an agent that gets it wrong could leak sensitive medical information or even deplete bank accounts. When it comes to security, more warnings are coming from inside the industry. OpenAI's chief scientist just this week wrote, No one is prepared for how fast AI is advancing. Warning AI agents could learn to evade human oversight. And a top researcher at Anthropic quit yesterday. Warning by next year, things could be out of control already.

Here's a troubling thought. One manager at Anthropic said there's a greater than 10% chance that AI wipes out humans in the next. next decade. Elizabeth Shulsey. ABC News, New York.
