Right now on eyewitness news before the heat and humidity returns. Our first alert forecasting tracking dangerous heat and the chance for some storms in parts of the area tonight. We are following breaking news in Durham. We introduce you to the Bull City's new police chief from Greensboro to Durham, the woman stepping into the role and leading change across the state. Plus new details of an I-Team troubleshooter investigation into a photography company accused of ghosting multiple brides. For the first time, we're hearing from the owners of that company. here's what's happening where you live this is ABC 11 i witness news and we begin with your first alert to the return of dangerous heat this week temps in the upper 90s today is expected to feel even hotter over the next few days thank you for joining us for the news at 4 I'm Barbara Gibbs and I'm Lauren Johnson in for Amber repenta heat and severe storms impacting the triangle this week with rain chances increasing For tomorrow, meteorologist Cruz Medina tracking the system headed our way. High Cruz. Hi there, Lauren.

Yeah, as we go throughout tomorrow, we are expecting a complex of storms developing back in the Midwest to move all the way into our region. And so for that reason, there's a higher risk back to our north in areas like Chicago and through the state of Kentucky, areas like that. As the storms get here, likely in a weaker state, we will have at least a potential to see some isolated strong storms with damaging wind. So a level one out of five is in effect for tomorrow. First alert Doppler net for this evening, only showing very few light showers down in Robeson County, southern Cumberland County. Most of the activity is off to our south and east at this point toward the coastal plain. And so it's possible that we see another shower storm pop up.

The chance is just higher to the south of Raleigh throughout this evening. So that means you have plenty of time to get outside. It's definitely going to be hot. And just a reminder, our sunsets, we're approaching our last 8 p.m. sunset. So today is at 8.10 by next week at this time. That'll be our last 8 p.m. sunset. After that, the daylight hours are getting a little shorter. So take advantage of the evening.

It'll be very warm out there. Temperatures in the low to mid-90s for the next several hours, feeling close to 100 degrees. And then tonight, only cooling down into the lower half of the 70s. So to be a very warm and muggy start to your day tomorrow. You'll have lots of dry time before the storms arrive in the afternoon. But temperatures are going to heat up very quickly tomorrow with a decent amount of morning sunshine. So already at 90 by noon tomorrow, mid 90s and our forecast for the

highs and feels like temperatures over 100. Those details coming up in your seven day forecast. Back to you. All right. Cruz, thank you. And as this heat wave returns, Duke Energy is reporting a surge in demand. Yeah, Elena Athens joins us live in Raleigh. Elena, good afternoon. What are you hearing from officials at Duke? Well, good afternoon to you. And Duke Energy says since, or by, rather, July 4th, demands for energy soared by 43 percent. higher than what they normally see in terms of levels. So right now, the energy company is offering some tips so people don't get a high bill a short while from now. I know that our bill was going to be already like 30 or 40 more dollars than this at this time last year. People are bracing for higher

energy bills as the hot, humid weather drags on. Duke Energy says typically your air conditioning and heating unit is the number one energy user in the home, and up to 30% of the time, it's working just to pool humidity out of the air. The company recommends setting the thermostat to the highest comfortable level, closing blinds and curtains during the hottest part of the day, and avoid using ovens, dryers, and other heat-producing appliances during peak afternoon hours. And using ceiling fans, you can feel up to four degrees cooler just by using a fan and not even touching the dial. All right, so some of the other tips you can take to hopefully keep your bills down.

All right, Steve Daniels is here with the chief. And as she comes here, she comes with a lot of experience. She does. Yeah, Lauren and Barbara, this is interesting, a surprise announcement today because there was no public knowledge of who the finalists were.

The public did not get a chance to meet the police chief finalist beforehand. So let me tell you who it is. She is a woman who's coming from Greensboro as the new police chief. The city of Durham announcing Stephanie Martis will lead the Durham Police Department. It comes after months of discussions and also interviews in the Bull City. Martis brings more than 24 years of law enforcement experience. She currently serves as an assistant chief in the Greensboro Police Department. Department. In Greensboro, she designed the department's first body-worn camera audit system,

which became an early model for police accountability all across North Carolina. Martis says she's honored to serve the Durham community, saying, quote, I look forward to working alongside the dedicated men and women of the Durham Police Department, strengthening relationships across the community and advancing evidence-based strategies that improve safety. Martis takes over as the Durham Chief on September the 8th. And coming up on eyewitness news at 5 o'clock, James Price will join us live with more on the chief, what we're learning about her in her history in Greensboro, what she's done in the triad, and what she hopes to accomplish in Durham in policing the city of Durham. In the meantime, the Durham Sheriff's Office releases new data overnight showing major crime categories are down in the first six months of the year. Our Cindy Bay comes more of the findings in this newly released report. Crime is down so far this year, but reducing violence remains a top priority in Durham. The Durham County Sheriff's Office says its top eight crimes fell by just over 8% compared to this time last year. Larcenies, including car break-ins, are also down 12% after deputies saw a spike in April and May. Deputies say they've made an arrest in a string of break-ins at Research Triangle Park. Aaron Williams, who moved to Durham from Rocky Mount, says crime is increasing across the state.

He supports more focus on young people. As city and county leaders work on a joint plan to cut homicides, shootings, and hospitalizations by 10% each year. A lot of youth programs will help our youth out here because they don't got no guidance. We got nobody speaking to the youth no more. If we get more programs out here to help the youth, I know this city would be a lot better. Leaders also want a separate youth summit to develop strategies aimed at reducing gun violence among young people. In Durham, Cindy Bay, ABC 11, eyewitness news. All right, Cindy, thank you.

And now to the procession in Cumberland County for a fallen soldier. Today's Staff Sergeant Michael Swinton is carried to his final resting place at Sand Hills National Cemetery. Over the weekend, friends and family gathered to honor the Fort Bragg Soldier at Southview Baptist Church. The fable native is remembered for his service to his country and his devotion to his family. Loved ones describe the 30-year-old as warm, welcoming, fun, and kind. Sergeant Swinton was killed last month in Iraq during a controlled detonation of a downed Iranian drone. Also following breaking new details into a major earthquake in Colombia, within the last 30 minutes we learned the death toll has surpassed 100. The powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck the western part of the region near the city of Cali.

Search and rescue efforts continue as many people remain trapped under collapsed buildings. The quake was also felt in neighboring countries like Ecuador and Panama. Now to some other local headlines in your speed feed first. We know the identity of the man killed in a shooting in Durham last week. it happened on Thursday afternoon on Ross Road near Melbourne Street in East Durham. Police a 21-year-old Jamari Sharp was taken to the hospital where he later died. Police have not released any details about the suspect they are looking for. And we're working to learn more about the death of a local high school student.

Chatham County Schools shared this post on Facebook today mourning the loss of Kaylee Thompson. School officials saying, quote, we extend our deepest sympathies to Kaylee's family, friends, classmates, teachers, and all who are grieving this heartbreaking loss. The post goes on to say, school counselors will be available. for students and staff members who may need assistance navigating the tragic loss. Police in Morrisville sharing new details about a serious crash that shut down a portion of international drive this morning. The Morrisville Police Chief telling eyewitness news a car ran into the back of a tractor

trailer. A woman was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The roadway has since reopened. That is your speed feed. Barbara, back to you. All right, Lauren, thank you. Well, new tonight at four, the owners of the Raleigh wedding photography company accused of taking about a million dollars from couples and not providing services are talking tonight.

Troubleshooter Diane Wilson is in Forsyth County with more. The owners of Holly Christina Photography face a judge today on a felony charge of obtaining property by false pretense accused of taking thousands of dollars from a couple and not providing the wedding photography services. Now no cameras were allowed inside that courthouse, but when the couple left the courthouse, they talked to us. I have done everything in my power to fulfill what I can. It has been very difficult in our family. Holly asked you and her husband, Chris.

We're working our hardest to fix everything the fastest we can. Both left the court hearing saying they're trying to make things right for the couples who trusted Holly Christiana Photography to document their wedding day. I was hospitalized for two different occasions. I got very sick.

It is a medical illness that caused the business to fail. I've been trying to recover. I'm not, I haven't been doing well. And I haven't been able to speak to the public because I'm focusing on recovering and just keeping my family together. The ASCUs are both charged with obtaining property by false pretense accused in this case of taking more than $5,600 for Morgan Bales. They were contracted to photograph her wedding, but no one showed from HCP on her wedding date. The ASCUs also face a civil lawsuit filed by North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson. After that office says they received more than 217,

complaints from customers, alleging about one million in financial losses from couples who paid HCP. The ASCUs have requested and were given a court-appointed attorney for their court case later this month. They have not entered a plea yet. Now, coming up tonight at five, hear more from the ASCUs. In Forsy County, Diane Wilson, ABC 11, eyewitness news. Diane, thank you. New it for today. Todd Blanche was sworn in as the United States Attorney General. It comes after the Senate narrowly confirmed him early Saturday morning in a 50-49 vote. President Trump tapped his former personal attorney to serve in the interim role after Pam Bondi's dismissal back in April. But he came under fire after his role in creating an anti-weaponization fund meant to benefit Trump's political allies, which was recently rescinded.

Coming up next at four officials in Durham looking for the public's help to decide what is next for the Durham County Memorial Stadium. And we're hearing from federal officials over at the RDU Airport today as those renovations continue and crews. All right, time for a check of first alert traffic. News, however, we're getting an update on the future of the Durham County Memorial Stadium. The county looking to upgrade or maybe rebuild the stadium. McKila Davis joins us live in Durham with what's, being discussed. Hi, Akela. Hi there, Lauren. You know, this feasibility study is just getting

underway. I'm told it'll run about six to eight months. And you know, this is really about the future of the Durham County Memorial Stadium. I want to give you a little history about the stadium. It was marketed as Durham's flagship sports facility. Built in 1958, the multi-purpose stadium seats about 8,500 people and hosts a variety of field sports events. But residents say it's underutilized. and that's why Economic Development Organization Durham Next is overseeing this study that's being led by global architecture and design firm Gensler. Today, the stadium hosts championship events like the CIAA football championship game. It also is home to a few teams, including the Carolina Flyers, Ultimate Frisbee team, and Shaw University football team, who we saw practicing today. It's just such an amazing asset that we think that there's possibility to do.

more. We see this as a multi-use venue. It is not just sports, but festivals, events, activities, we would hope that whatever we come up with would be able to host all of this. So a multi-purpose asset for the community. So ahead of 530, there will be community input sessions that are slated to start next month. Plus, of course, we're going to be hearing from some residents on their thoughts about this feasibility study. Reporting live in Durham, Akela Davis, ABC 11, eyewitness news. And today, federal officials in the triangle visiting RDU to highlight the airport's ongoing renovation there. Two FAA leaders in town to learn more about the development and discuss the federal partnership to support critical infrastructure. RDU currently expanding Terminal 2 and building a new longer runway. FAA officials say they are ramping up federal support at RDU as the airport expands. Here in Raleigh, looking over the massive construction efforts that we have going on, there are not a lot of countries in America that are building new runways. It just so happens Raleigh is one of them, and it speaks to the forethought and the wisdom of the planners here in Raleigh that are looking to the future and getting out in front of what will be a great expansion from Raleigh.

RDE's new runway is expected to be complete by 2029, followed by the expansion of Terminal 2 to create more gates and allow higher passenger volume. The federal government is issuing an urgent warning about foods containing recalled jalapenos, saying that they may be linked to a salmonella outbreak. ABC's Rainer Roy has the latest. More products containing jalapinos are being pulled from grocery store shelves and restaurant menus across the U.S. As health officials investigate a growing salmonella outbreak, the agricultural. Department now says 18 meat and poultry products like wraps, burritos, enchiladas, and salads could contain potentially tainted jalapinos. The FDA saying they were sold at stores including Kroger, Hecb, Walmart, and Albertsons, with used by dates between August 3rd and 16th.

Health officials telling consumers to throw the products out and say more items may be identified as the recall continues. They might be sitting in your refrigerator or your freezer. Not a time to panic, but certainly check your refrigerator for these products. Officials say more than 340 people have gotten sick in 27 states. Chipotle and Kudoba also removed jalapinos from their menus last week. Taylor Farms, the massive food producer, linked to this summer cyclosporiasis outbreak, also recalling more than a dozen products with jalapinos, including salsa, guacamole, and cheese dips. Experts say outbreaks like cyclospiriasis and salmonella are more difficult to contain right now,

partly because the FDA has lost thousands of employees, and the CDC has reduced food-borne disease surveillance. ABC's Kira Phillips, pressing Cali Means, a senior advisor at the Department of Health and Human Services. You want to talk about a yearly thing that happens every single year with food safety concerns and not talk about the most important food safety reform. When's the most important food? An outbreak on our food where 20,000 people got sick and two people died. We have the data. What's the data?

What's the data? These food safety outbreaks happen substantially. Mexican health officials have now launched an investigation centering on a packing facility as the potential source of this salmonella outbreak. Rina Roy, ABC News, New York. And cyclists' rises cases continue to rise across our state. White County now has 500 confirmed cases. There are 867 cases statewide, and at least 33 people have been hospitalized with that illness. All right, Barbara, you know it's hot when you get in the car and the air automatically turns on so high you can't even hear yourself.

Think that's how hot it is outside. You're like, wait, why is this air on? Because the last time I was in here. Yeah, yeah. It was hot. It's hot. And walking outside to the sound of cicadas. Yes.

That's what a summer in the south is like. Yes, that is for sure. That's what we've been dealing with. It's hot and the heat isn't going anywhere anytime soon. So get ready for a hot week ahead. Feels like temperature, that's really going to be our focus because, This is dangerous heat. It's the feels like temperature is above 100 degrees for the next several days. And so this is a combination of not only mid 90s, but also the oppressive humidity that we have in place. It's going to take all the way into the weekend for us to get a little bit of reprieve from this humidity. But here's why the muggy meter staying high, very tropical like air mass that we have in place right now. That's kind of where it's going to stay. Tropical to humid for the foreseeable future. And that's going to keep those feels like temperatures elevated until our. our next cold front arrives next weekend.

I'll take you outside. This is Rdu Airport. It feels like 99 degrees right now, even though the actual temperature is only 92. It's partly cloudy out there. It's dry in the city of Oaks right now. Any rain that we could see pop up this afternoon is gonna be down in areas like the sand hills

and off toward the coastal plain. Most of that outside of Central North Carolina, thankfully, so we get a little bit of a break from the rain today, but I'll say the one positive of seeing any rain if you're lucky enough to do so, is it would briefly cool you down. So throughout this week, there are going to be chances of storms. They're just not going to impact everyone.

Here's first alert predictor walking us through the rest of this evening. Again, that storm chance highest to our south and east. We will be dry as we start off the day tomorrow with temperatures in the 70s and some morning sunshine. By the afternoon, heating up quickly with temperatures in the mid-90s, and we'll see a complex of storms rolling through sometime during the late afternoon and into the evening hours. So for tomorrow, there is going to be a lot of dry time. That's going to allow us to heat up quickly. That storm chance greatest late afternoon and evening.

So if we get the storms, that could help to cool us down from these feels like temperatures over 100 degrees. Nonetheless, it's still going to be hot as we go into the evening as well. Again, not too much relief. We're counting on storms to cool us down. That's really our only help throughout this week. Going into Wednesday, there's another late day storm risk. A front to our north as long as it stays to our north is going to keep temperature's hot. So we'll have high pressure building in from the south.

This keeps us in the mid-90s through Thursday. Less storm coverage then, but we will see rain chances return with that front that we're expecting throughout this weekend. A live look outside. This is from our downtown Raleigh SkyCam, Pindo Skycam, 92 degrees, 90 in Roxborough, 95 in Fayetteville. And so it's going to be a warm evening. If you have any evening plans, definitely try and wait until after sunset for things like walking the dogs. otherwise you're going to be sweating a whole lot. And of course for your furry friends,

you don't want to burn their pall pads. So tipter staying in the mid-90s all the way through Friday. Saturday will feature a storm chance. That's from that front that comes through on Friday. Notice will be in the upper 80s then. Then we're back to 90s as we go into early next week with storm chances staying in the forecast. Back to you. The 90s don't want to leave.

I know. They don't want to leave us alone. No. All right, Cruz. We are ready for them to get out of here. All right. Well, happening now, a boil water advisory issued for the town of Sanford impacting the roads listed right there on your screen. Lee County officials say water samples in the area tested positive for bacteria.

Customers in the affected areas are being asked to boil water for at least a minute before they use it. Officials say they're doing another round of testing today and the advisory will be lifted once water samples come back negative for bacteria. Up next from state champs to World Series champs. Plus, why the union representing thousands of TSA workers is now raising public safety concerns over the Gold Plus private security program. The union that represents TSA workers is suing the agency about the expansion of the new

Gold Plus airport security program. They're claiming a lack of transparency. TSA Gold Plus is a public-private partnership that allows airports to opt into using private contractors to operate security checkpoints with TSA oversight. This, after a 75-day government shutdown left workers unpaid and long security lines at airports. The lawsuit alleges TSA pushed the partnership secretly without required disclosures. Roughly 20 airports already use privatized screening. The union says it's concerned about public safety and TSA job security. Well, 7 up is giving its classic lemon-lime soda a new twist. The brand is reformulating. its recipe for the first time in 15 years, slightly reducing the lemon to create a more lime

forward taste. Seven Up is also refreshing its packaging, putting a lime lemon front and center along with the new vertical logo. The updated recipe will also roll out in Cherry 7 Up and zero sugar versions beginning in the middle of August. Looking ahead of the fall season and crispy cream, look at that, already rolling out its new menu. Its autumn lineup of donuts will be available tomorrow. The new treats include maple cheesecake and cafe mocha flavors. The Biscoff cookie, butter, and pumpkin spice cake donuts

on Sunday. They shut out Kentucky 2 to nothing in Greenville. It's the first national title for Johnson County. and we are told party planning is now underway for a big celebration. Johnson County posted on Facebook saying in part, congratulations on an unforgettable run and on bringing a Little League softball world series title home to Johnston County. Way to go. I know. So exciting for the girls.

I love it. So exciting. All right. That facility will serve as a center for hands-on learning and discovering AI literacy. Eyewitnesses News. Duwan Hoggard was the MC for today's groundbreaking event. Well, as AI continues to shape the education space,

Students right here on the campus of North Carolina Central University can now say they're officially part of history. Three, two, one. Today, history was made in Durham. North Carolina Central University, proud to be the first HBCU in the country to have an Institute for Artificial Intelligence. When I think about AI, I think about the fact that technology continues to move faster than trust. And so what we have to do is build that trust around usage of AI in a responsible and ethical way. As Chancellor, Dr. Kerry G. Dixon says it, artificial intelligence continues to outpace and exceed expectations. She and other administrators at the university deciding the time is now to invest in the technology and equip today's Eagles to be tomorrow's leaders.

We're helping our students prepare for careers, the workforce for North Carolina and beyond. And that's when we met emerging leader David Goings, studying information technology. I hope it gave students an opportunity to express themselves. I hope it sparks an idea that hopefully changed the world for the better. The Institute, affectionately known as Ayer, has multi-purpose space, an innovation lab, robotics, and more, all designed with students in mind, thanks to a $1 million grant from Google. Google is proud to stand with you. And an equipment investment from Lenovo.

And we believe that AI will be a critical enabler for the future. All as artificial intelligence continues to make advancements in education across all levels. We have two opportunities when you're the first of something. You can either be someone that rests on your laws or set a pathway for all this to follow. And I believe that we're doing the latter. And I've been speaking with alumni who are absolutely excited about what this space means. Happening today, annual property tax bills will be sent out in Durham. Taxpayers may also access and view their 2026 tax bill online. Current year taxes are due September 1st and can be paid without penalty through January 5th.

You can also make partial payments without interest. You can pay by mail online, by phone, or in person at the Durham County Tax Administration Office on East Main Street. Before, the DMV expanded across Wake County. Today, town officials in Fukuwe Arena announced a new DMV office coming to the area. The renovated space is expected to be four-time larger than the current location. The new building will be located on North Main Street in the same location as the old Walgreens building. That facility is scheduled to open early next year. Happening this week, Fort Bragg hosting a hiring event on post, officials say it's an effort to connect veterans, service members, and military families with civilian careers. Fort Bragg says,

over 900 job offers have been extended over the past year. The recruit military Fort Bragg hiring event will be held this Thursday, August 13th, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Iron Mike Conference Center. And that is your speed feed. Barbara, back to you. All right, Lauren. Well, now at four, if your little one is getting ready to start kindergarten, now's a great time to start preparing them and not just with learning things like letters and numbers and colors. Dr. Kimberly Giuliano is a pediatrician at Cleveland Clinic Children's. She says other skills that are important include teaching your child how to sit still and follow instruction.

The same goes for waiting for their turn to talk, using an inside voice and knowing when to ask for help. Sometimes a child may be too nervous to speak up and struggle in silence instead. Dr. Giuliano says your child should also be fully potty trained and be able to remove clothes on their own. If a child is struggling, avoid things that have zippers, buttons, if there's just an elastic waistband that can go up and down, that's going to make it a lot easier for the child headed off to school. Dr. Giuliano says if your child does not know how to do some of these things, that's okay. There's plenty of time to practice even after the school year gets going.

And more than 30 years after the murder of hip-hop legend, Tupac Choucourt jury selection has started in Las Vegas for the murder trial. A tragedy in New York Harbor is now the focus of a criminal investigation after a leisure boat overturns killing a mother and a young child and injuring a dozen others. The boat capsized late Saturday evening near the Statue of Liberty.

Officials say 14 people were on board. 27-year-old Sarah Sanchez and her five-month-old daughter, Antonella Garcia, were taken to a hospital where they were both pronounced dead. Sanchez's husband, Andre Garcia, survived. Twelve other passengers were safely rescued and treated for minor injuries. Authorities arrested the boat's operator, 46-year-old Manuel Hernandez of Manhattan at the scene. Investigators are looking into whether the vessel was operating as an illegal charter. Well, today the trial begins in Las Vegas for the murder of Tupac Shakur 30 days or 30 years after the legendary rapper was gunned down.

Today, Las Vegas prosecutors say they can prove the murder was orchestrated by one time South L.A. gang leader Dwayne Davis, street name Keith D. Davis was arrested in 2023 for Shakur's murder. He spoke exclusively to ABC News from inside jail. I'm innocent. I ain't killed nobody, never did ever kill nobody. They don't have no evidence against me. Jamie put me in Las Vegas. For years, Davis boasted about his alleged involvement in Shakur's murder. A book was published with his admission, but Davis says he did not write that book. Davis now pleading not guilty to one count of murder.

Jury selection could last all week. Right now for a 27-year-old man is in custody after breaking into the home of Kim Kardashian. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office, the suspect was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of burglary. We're told Kim Kardashian was not home at the time of the end. incident. He spent much of his day in the bathtub. They knew they had to do something. So then we came up with the idea to get him a baby, a puppy. And he fell in love with her. He just softens up for her. It's really cute. Oh, look at those faces. The puppy's name is Mabel, which was Barb's middle name.

Amy says, Chewy has been showing Mabel the ropes, including the route to the bus stop, and the two are basically inseparable. They have not tried gardening just yet. And as we go forward in time, we're expecting the feels like tipters to also exceed 100 degrees into Tuesday and Wednesday and possibly into the end of the week as well. So you've got to make sure you're staying cool and hydrated on days like today. Now, as far as this evening goes, there's not going to be a whole lot of coverage of rain. First alert Doppler net showing one little batch of thunderstorms that has popped up in central Samson County. So this is going to move right over Clinton likely in the next few minutes. Outside of that, just a few spotty showers in Cumberland and Hoke counties as well. That's kind of the focus for the rain in those southern communities. Walking the dog, you might want to wait until the sun goes down just so that temperatures can

cool down a little bit. This time of the year, the pavement can be very hot and can burn their pall pads. So keep that in mind. Temperatures will eventually drop into the 80s as we go past sunset. And we should stay there for several hours before dropping into the low 70s by tomorrow morning. Now here's the thing. Even though we drop it to the 70s tonight, when you wake up, it's already going to feel like the 80s. And by the afternoon, it'll feel like the triple digits.

The best chance of rain tomorrow, I'd say it's between about 3 and 7 p.m. So we could see some spotty storms popping up across the region. Wherever they pop up, they could be locally strong. That's why tomorrow is a first alert day, level one risk of storms there. We'll see another level one into Wednesday. watching storm systems come out of the Midwest, both tomorrow and Wednesday. Exactly how those storms track is going to determine how much storms we see here in Central North Carolina. Nonetheless, the chance still there.

Tipter State in the 90s as we go through the end of the week as well, finally cooling down with our next front, dropping us into the upper 80s for Saturday, and then we're back into the 90s with more rain chances as we go into early next week.
