Breaking right now on eyewitness news, a husband and wife found dead outside their home in Franklin County, their young child believed to be at home at the time of the shooting. What police are telling us at this hour. And we have our eye on the economy. Thousands of jobs lost last month across the country. The hospitality sector taking a hard hit. Right now, live coverage from your local news leader, keeping you connected to your community and your first alert forecast. Here's what's happening where you live. This is ABC 11 eyewitness news. And right now on eyewitness news at 4 o'clock, we have two breaking news stories involving shots being fired on the left side of your screen and investigation is underway after a husband and wife where, killed in a shooting. But first we begin there on the right side of your screen where a man was found dead not long after sheriff's deputies opened fire. Thanks for joining us here for eyewitness News 4 on this Friday. I'm Steve Daniels. Amber has the day off. And I'm Barbara Gibbs. We have a lot of new information coming in on both of those deadly shootings. Let's begin with the one in Edgecom County where a suspect is dead after pointing a rifle at a deputy. Chopper 11 over the scene there.

Deputies responding to the home in the 10,000 block of NC 43 North. That's between Rocky Mount and Pine Tops for a report of a thousand. theft when they got there. The suspect aimed a rifle at a deputy. That deputy then returned fire. The suspect ended up retreating into the home still armed. But when additional law enforcement entered the home, the suspect was found dead. At this time, it is not exactly clear how the suspect died. The FBI is investigating. And now to the breaking news out of Franklin County, a husband and wife are found dead after a shooting in broad daylight. And according to the information we're gathering on the scene, it appears to be a murder-suicide with the husband killing his wife.

It happened on Sunlight Cove in the Lake Royal community about 930 this morning. We've just learned the husband is a Navy veteran. Investigators say a child under the age of 10 was found inside the home when they got there. That child is now with social services. Cindy Bay, live now in the Lake Royal neighborhood here Bunn with the latest. Tell us more about what you're learning right now, Cindy. Yes, Steve, well, the investigation continues and you could see that the neighborhood is still blocked off behind me with that home, still marked off with crime scene tape as authorities investigate.

Now, police have confirmed the two people were married. Investigators say the husband, a Navy veteran, is the suspect in his wife's death. The husband is also dead, and the investigation, again, remains active. So every indication that we have found in statements that were given by the juvenile stated that it was around midnight when he heard two loud pops. And other neighbors we've talked to said they thought they heard a car door slamming very loud around that same time. So right now all indication points to around midnight. And so that was the police just recounting, including what the child told them.

Now, police say there is no threat to the public. And at five, we're going to hear from a neighbor who describes the unusual encounter he had outside the home hours before police arrived. Paddle borders at Jordan Lake out there trying to stay cool with a day on the water. It's a good idea.

The hot weather prompting a few alerts for the forecast for the next week. It's got a cheap meteorologist on Schwinnaker in the First Alert forecast center with the latest. We know it's going to get hot around here. Absolutely. Even warmer than today. But we're tracking a few showers. This is the onshore breeze. Just creating some showers down in the southeastern sandhills.

If we zoom down in, you can see some thunder south of Goldsboro toward Indian Springs, Clinton, Mingo, Fayetteville. It's getting close to you. I think most of this will die as it moves inland, but there is a possibility of an isolated shower. We're looking south out of our self-help sky cam. You can see those skies getting dark over downtown Fayetteville. 92 degrees right now, factor the humidity in, and it feels like it's 99. Those feels like temperatures triple digits in Goldsboro and Roanoke Rapids. Raleigh feels like 96, 95 Durham Carbro and 98.

in Sanford. Let's first alert you to the evening ahead, taking the pup for a walk tonight. Those numbers will fall through the 90s by 9 o'clock. We're down to 82 degrees by 10 o'clock, 81. And when we go on for ABC 11 at 11, the rain has shut off across the region. I'm still warm a monkey with those feels like numbers in the 80s. He was disarming an Iranian drone that landed at his base in Iraq. A viewing and funeral service will be held tomorrow.

At Southview Baptist Church in Hope Mills, the 30-year-old leaves behind a wife, a six-year-old son, and a four-year-old daughter. Sergeant Swinton was born and raised in Fayetteville, and he served in the Army for nearly a decade. Now to some other local headlines in your speed feed. First, a Wake County woman accused of keeping her child covered in feces in a dog cage. Pleads guilty this week but has not yet received a sentence. 33-year-old Rachel Lee Galasso pleaded guilty to four charges of negligent child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury, according to court documents. Back in April, Galasso and her ex-partner Lacey Hocott Jr. were arrested after four of their children were allegedly neglected enough that they required ongoing medical care, could spend more than 30 years behind bars. The man convicted of killing an 11-year-old girl during the 2022 Raleigh Christmas parade is released from prison.

According to court documents, Landon Glass finished his active sentence yesterday. He was sentenced back in November after pleading guilty to three charges related to the crash. His release comes nearly four years after he crashed his pickup truck into the parade killing Haley Brooks. A driver sentenced in a deadly hit and run in Johnston County, Robert Williams, will serve at least eight years. in prison. He pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and felony hit and run resulting in death. The State Highway Patrol says in December of 2024, Williams was driving his BMW the wrong way on Highway 70 when he crashed into a Jeep. 24-year-old Courtney Atkins was killed and three others were hurt, including her young son. Williams was later tracked down and arrested. And that is your speed.

Steve, back to you. Okay, Barbara, we are keeping our eye on the economy right now on eyewitness news at 4. and some troubling news emerged today for the jobs market. A new report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows an unexpected loss of 23,000 jobs in July across the country. Jobs in local government and education, retail and food services taking a big hit across America. Elena Athens is live now outside our downtown Raleigh studio and newsroom. And Elena, you spoke with a local business owner. He says he's feeling the impact of the state of the economy and he's making some changes in

how he does business. Yes, Steve. He spoke with a bar owner who has been in the business for, 25 years and he says at this point he thought the business would be turnkey. However, he tells me he is working harder than ever right now to bring people through his door in this economy. I'm having to get incredibly creative. I have a weekly meeting with my team of how can we reach more folks and what can we do to get more bodies in the door. Richie Reno owns Wolf and Porter and has adjusted his business plan to meet people where they are. Reno created new menus at a lower

price point, started pairing up with other small businesses on activations, is holding craft nights every Wednesday and turning what was just an outdoor patio for folks to grab a drink, now into a private event space. We've had five weddings here, and we have a bunch more booked. A new jobs report was released today, and a local economist says it's a good indicator where the economy stands. The report shows the country lost 23,000 jobs in July. A survey released just last week found 41% of People say they were concerned about being able to afford groceries, and 62% of people have cut down on eating out in order to pay for necessities. Dr. Gerald Cohen says what's notable in the new data from today is that for the second

consecutive month, there's been job losses in the leisure and hospitality sector. Meaningful job losses, you know, 40,000 jobs per month. And this could be as a result of people saying, you know what, I'm pulling back on some of my kind of discretionary spending. So, you know, I'm not going to go to that restaurant. So head at 5 o'clock, the two longtime Raleigh businesses that just announced they're going to be closing doors after serving the community for decades. We'll have more on that ahead for now. Yeah, it's interesting to hear how business owners are pivoting right now, trying to compete, trying to really stay afloat. Elena, thank you. Right now at 4-Go-Raleigh is suspending its R-Line bus service starting this Sunday. say the route may never come back. The downtown route has been struggling with low ridership and a public hearing next Thursday could seal its fate for good. Tamara Scott spoke with the city officials about the change. I'm in downtown Raleigh near Union Station at one of the Rline bus stops here. You can see a sign just there. But starting tomorrow, that is the last day that you can catch one of those buses. You can see here a sign alerting everyone about the suspension starting Sunday.

The Raleigh Transit Authority approved the change earlier this year after years of declining ridership. Transit officials say when the R-line launched in 2009, it filled a major need for people getting around downtown. But since then, we've got Uber, we've got Lyft, we've got scooters, we've got bikes, and it's just, you know, the ridership has continued to decline over the years, so we just decided to suspend it. Transportation leader David Walker says they will study whether downtown still needs a circulatory route or a different type of service that makes more sense in the future. The study will determine what that is. You know, it may be that there's nothing needed.

You know, at the peak of its service, it was doing about 30,000 trips a month, and we're doing about 30,000 trips a month on scooters and bikes today in the downtown area. So it's kind of gotten, you know, the ridership that it had has been replaced with other micro-mobility options. In the meantime, officials say riders can use one of the 10 other high-frequency bus routes that already traveled in many of the same areas. Walker tells me this is an ever-evolving mission as the city continues to grow. We just continue to study our system and our service and we look at the different demographics and the different transit propensities that are out there and where they are and kind of how things are moving throughout the city and the county

and try to make sure that we're still targeting the right places for the right where the needs are. Now Go-Rolly tells me that the suspension is temporary but if there is anyone who would like to weigh in you can at the next Raleigh Transit Authority meeting next week. We're back now following some breaking new details on the disappearance of a Carrie woman who was on vacation in the Caribbean on the island of Grenada. Her husband now says his wife likely drowned. You might remember Liz Waddell vanished on July 22nd while swimming off Grandaunt Beach in Grenada. In a written update today, her husband and Carrie said, based on everything we know, it seems drowning may be the most likely scenario.

But he added, a lot doesn't make sense. Liz's husband says investigators have found no evidence she intended to disappear and that her journals described plans for the future with him and their daughter in Wake County. Well, right now at 4, we're learning more about a deadly school shooting in Thailand just north of Manhattan. Bangkok. Thai police say at least five teachers are dead, more than 30 people are wounded, at least nine of them critically. Police say the 14-year-old suspect, the shooter, stormed the secondary school after allegedly killing his grandparents in the home he shared with them. The suspect turned his weapon on himself and later died. Back here in Washington, it seems Senate Majority Leader John Thune cannot count on an

endorsement from President Trump to help keep him in that position. Trump refused to support Thune in an interview yesterday. The president said, quote, I don't want to get into that. And then he went on to criticize Thune for not getting enough votes to pass the voting legislation Trump has been championing in Washington. The majority party of the Senate elects its own leaders every two years before the new congressional term. That's due to happen shortly after the midterm elections in November. Also in D.C., Senator Bill Cassidy appears to be clearing the way for Todd Blanche's confirmation as Attorney General. Blanche can likely only afford to lose its support of two Republican senators.

So here's the latest as they're telling up these potential votes. Senator Susan Collins previously said she's in no vote, and Senator Lisa Murkowski, her vote remains unclear. ABC's Christiane Cordero explains why despite hesitation, Cassidy says he does now plan to vote yes. Today, after weeks of uncertainty, a key hurdle cleared in Todd Blanche's confirmation process to becoming the next Attorney General. Blanche can likely only afford to lose the support of two Republican senators in a vote that could happen as soon as today. Senator Bill Cassidy's vote was unclear until today when he announced with some hesitancy that he will vote yes. Mr. Blanche is not perfect and he will tell you this, but the choice is not between perfection and Mr. Blanche. It is between Mr. Blanche and another acting attorney general who may not run the department effectively under President Trump

and who indeed may not be as good as Mr. Blanche. Maine Senator Susan Collins previously announced she will not. not support Blanche in a statement saying he has taken several actions that have further eroded the department's independence. Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska has similar concerns, taking issue with the Department of Justice's handling of the Epstein files, the sweeping immunity granted to President Trump and his family businesses, plus the creation of the nearly $1.8 billion fund to compensate the president's political allies. She says she, quote, opposes Blanche's nomination, but stopped short of clarifying exactly how she plans to vote. Her vote is no longer expected to change Blanche's fate

unless another Republican senator breaks from the majority, in which case Trump says he's prepared to get involved. Hopefully it'll work out very well for the country because you're not going to find better than Todd Blanche. Cassidy's support leaves Blanche in a much stronger position as the Senate prepares to vote. All 47 Democrats, including centrist's Senator John Federman, are expected to vote. No. Kristian Cordero, ABC News, Washington. New at four, new signs around the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool are apparently blaming previous administrations for the troubled renovation project. Several signs with the National Park Service logo say, quote,

after years of neglect, more than half of the 58 water supply ports were so clogged. They were deemed non-functioning. The $14 million project ordered by President Trump has been plagued by uncontrollable algae blooms, among other issues. The Trump administration has blamed feeder pipe problems. for the reason a renovation was needed. Okay, I think it's a good idea to talk about the weather, especially since it's time to kick off the weekend.

Don says there's some ocean air coming to the area right now, but it's not cooling things off. It's triggering thunderstorms for us instead. That's right. And the heat is going to get more intense. Yeah, it is. I mean, we're talking feels like temperatures Monday, Tuesday, about 105, 106. So back near advisory categories.

Now, a live look at First Alert Doppler, and we're zoomed down in on Hope Mills, Gray's Creek, Southern Cumberland County, northern Sampson County. You can see some showers working through. They're mainly confined to south and east of I-95. This is as the afternoon progresses and the wind comes off the ocean and blows that moisture inland, it can create these pop-up showers. That's exactly what's happening. This is a typical summertime pattern, especially southeast of I-95. Nothing severe. We'll keep an eye on it through the afternoon. But it is putting a darker sky over downtown Fayville right now. It's cooled you a little bit. Mostly cloudy sky.

Those winds, though, rain cooled south-southeast at 20 miles per hour, getting a little breezy down there. We'll see our temperatures dropping into the 70s tonight. It's going to be warm. It's going to be muggy. And that means you could see some patchy fog to deal with. Your first alert predictor forecast model does show a few pockets of fog early in the day on Saturday. But if you sleep in, it'll be gone quickly and gone by mid-morning. Tomorrow morning, you're heading out on your Saturday.

Temperatures start in the 70s by 10 o'clock. 80s by noon or at 87, but those feels like numbers are starting to approach the upper 90s as the heat builds in. You can see these showers just pushing on shore from that breeze working their way to the north, but they're dissipating a little bit. There brings some cloud cover and cooler temperatures down along the coast. Some mountain showers firing as well. High pressure out to the west of us continuing to try and dominate our weather. There is a system down here off the coast of Florida in a typical season. this might have become something tropical, but with El Nino cutting the top off it, and we're not seeing anything in the way of a tropical storm.

First, Lord Predictor forecast model, as we go through the evening hours, there still could be an isolated shower through about 11 o'clock tonight as some of that moisture comes off the mountains, but it will die out quickly. You'll start tomorrow dry, and then tomorrow afternoon, pop-up shower here and there. Wouldn't cancel any Saturday planes. Just know that you may need the umbrella for a time as some of those showers pass through. Forecast looks like this for tomorrow. 92 in Raleigh, 92 Durham, 94 in Fayetteville.

Your first alert seven-day forecast, powered by ACCA weather. 93 on Sunday, again, a late-day storm risk. Monday and Tuesday, they're alert possible days. And that's because when we start to see those feels like temperatures 105-106, that's heat advisory levels for the national oil service. Doesn't mean we'll have one, but if we do, we'll make those first alert days. Wednesday's still hot, humid 94, 92 on. Thursday and back into the upper 80s with some rain chances toward Friday.

But heat with us over the next several days. And again, not wash out Saturday or Sunday. Just hit her in a shower, otherwise hot, humid, but outdoor planes should be just fine. Did I miss the memo? Is it no tie Friday? It's Friday. Okay. I don't know if it's no tie Friday, but after I got band-aid shamed by you yesterday, I thought

And we are back now with your top stories at this hour. A husband and wife are dead after a shooting in Franklin County. It happened on Sunlight Cove in the Lake Royal community about 9.30 this morning. That's when they were found dead outside the home.

Police only say the husband is the suspect in his wife's death. And we're also following some breaking news unfolding in Edgecom County. Chopper 11 over the scene here. A man is now dead after pointing a rifle at a deputy. Deputies say they responded to a home on NC 43 between Rocky Mount and Pine Tops. They say a guy was caught stealing things from a home and he was shot dead by deputies after that guy pointed a rifle at them. The FBI is now investigating. And we have new details in the disappearance of a woman from Kerry who was on vacation in the Caribbean on the island of Grenada.

Liz Waddell's husband now says his wife likely drowned. She vanished on July 22nd. she was swimming off the beach there in Grenada. Her husband says investigators have found no evidence she intended to disappear, and her journals described plans for the future the life she had with him and their daughter in Wake County. This is 400,000 veterans are diagnosed with alcohol use disorder every single year. The Durham VA is one of 18 medical centers across the country,

participating in clinical trials that could lead to treatment for alcohol use disorder, a condition that impairs a person's ability to stop drinking. Researchers say GLP1 medications could potentially reduce a person's desire to drink. Reduces cravings, reduces the amount that people are drinking, reduces the urges to actually consume alcohol. Male and female veterans between the ages of 18 and 80 with moderate to severe alcohol use disorder may qualify for this study. They don't have to live in Durham, but they must be able to travel to the medical center for four in-person visits. Participants will receive weekly injections

for six months as researchers track changes in drinking, health, and quality of life. Dr. Dave Oslin is leading this national study from Philadelphia and says this is why Durham was selected to participate. Durham has a long history of doing clinical research projects and has several centers of excellence there focusing on both mental health and other disorders. So the staff there have done other clinical trials and have a good history of doing excellent research work. So the VA in Asheville is also participating in this study ahead at 530 how soon researchers are expecting results. Reporting live in Durham, Akila Davis, ABC 11, eyewitness news. Well, now to an update on major transportation projects here in the triangle, the regional transportation alliance held its annual networking event today. Business leaders and local officials came together to discuss the triangle's growth through better transportation for our area. The president and CEO of Raleigh-Derm International Airport was also there. He gave us an update on the multi-billion dollar airport expansion currently underway and the possible

new markets their air carriers can fly. So I think you're going to see us continue to expand in Europe. I think you're going to see us expand in a place like Indian Africa. I think you're going to see us expand to Central America and South America and Mexico and of course the Caribbean area. So I think it's pretty much untapped. We're really reflection of what's going on in the community. Lange says RDE's new runway will come online in 29 after the expansion of Terminal 2 and that will create more gates and allow higher passenger volume. In the video, this guy named Jordan Huggins addresses the city of Raleigh showing them the squiggly lines out there that a city crew put down. And then he goes on to ask, hey, can we get a supervisor out here to fix it? Huggins tells us he never actually expected his video to go viral. I was just driving home one day. This is the road I take a lot, South State Street, and I was driving home, and it's like, it was like a trail of red crumbs, and the line, it starts with like a dashed line, and then it just got crazier and crazier and more and more out of whack.

And so then by the time I got past it, I was like, I have to stop and say something. So I turned around. It was like low traffic at the time, so I paused in the middle of the time. paused in the middle, like parked to the middle of the road and jumped out and just started recording. Okay, so not only did Jordan's video go viral, it also caught the attention of the city of Raleigh. The squiggly lines are now gone, and a spokesperson for the city says they're looking into why this happened. They say, hey, it wasn't us. We hired a contractor to come out here and do this, and the contractor created those squiggly lines. Let's hope they got their money back from the contractor for that.

Two foodborne illnesses are making thousands of Americans sick across the country, including here in North Carolina. Cases of cyclosporiasisitis continue to rise across the country. At least 22,000 cases are being reported across 47 states. In Wake County, there are total. of 497 cases and 12 people in the hospital. In another case, restaurants across the nation are pulling jalapenos from their menus. They're linked to salmonella. Salad chain, sweet green joins Chipotle and Kudoba, saying that they proactively remove the possibly tainted peppers.

So far, the outbreak has sickened 375 people across 27 states. And we talked to ABC's Yori Benigild with ABC News about what people need to know as they consider buying produce. You can always opt for things that are safer. for example, peeled fruits and vegetables, that's usually the safest option. If you're cutting into anything like a melon or a cantaloupe, you want to make sure you're making sure

to clean the outside as well because that knife can also bring in bacteria. And the riskiest types of foods are things like berries, basals, mint. You want to make sure you're giving those a thorough wash. The FDA is working to determine if any of the recalled jalapenos went to grocery stores too, not just restaurants.

The CDC says, if you have any jalapinos at home right now, you should check with your place of purchase to confirm the source. those peppers. ABC's Romando Garcia has the details. New Mexico's attorney,

is touting a landmark ruling after a judge ordered Facebook and Instagram parent company META to pay the state $567 million for mental health treatment and prevention programs for young people. Really changing the narrative in this country and frankly all over the world about whether or not companies of this size and scale can actually be held accountable. According to the ruling filed in court Thursday, the judge found meta intentionally used features such as endless scrolling, auto play and content recommendations to keep teenagers on his platforms. longer. The judge said those features contributed to high rates of depression, anxiety, and self-harm among young people. Meta's penalties now reaching nearly a billion dollars after a jury in March determined the company should pay a $365 million fine. During the trial, state prosecutors accused the company of knowing some of the features on its apps could lead to addiction and child exploitation and ignore the dangers. They knew about these harms that they were not forthcoming about the danger. And so now

they must pay the price for the choice that they made to put profits over children's safety. Meta now vowing to appeal the decision saying, quote, we work hard to keep people safe on our platforms and have been transparent about the challenges of identifying and removing bad actors and harmful content. We remain confident in our record of protecting teens online.
