Starting point is 00:00:45 Breaking right now at four authorities expected to provide an update on the investigation into the murder of Rob Reiner and his wife. We know that Reiner's son was taken into custody Sunday night and is awaiting charges for the deaths of his parents. Thanks for joining us here for the news. And for this Tuesday, I'm Amber Repenta. And I'm Lauren Johnson in for Barbara Gibbs. The couple was found dead in their Los Angeles home on Sunday afternoon. And in just a few moments, we'll hear from the LAPD and Los Angeles County District Attorney as they're expected to lay out the evidence against Nick Reiner. Steve Daniels is in the breaking news center with the very latest on the end.
Starting point is 00:01:17 Amber and Lauren, it is a family tragedy that is rocking people across the country and certainly there in Hollywood where this murder happened. These, Rob Reiner, his wife, Michelle, a singer, they were found dead inside their home in Los Angeles on Sunday night. And now police aid is their son, 32-year-old Nick Reiner, who is responsible at being held right now without bound on suspicion of murder. I want to take you to the live feed in Los Angeles right now. Any moment now, we are expecting the district attorney in L.A. County to be stepping up to that microphone. His name is Nathan Hockman and the LAPD police chief, Jim McDonald, will be there as well. This is scheduled 1 p.m. Eastern time, 4 o'clock right now, Eastern time, where we expect that the district attorney will lay out the charges against Nick Reiner. The sequence of events was the LAPD took their investigation.
Starting point is 00:02:06 They took their evidence from inside the home in Brentwood. They presented it to the district attorney, and now the district attorney has been deliberating about charges. This is also a group of photos we got in today. This is the arrest of Nick Reiner in Los Angeles. This happened. These are LAPD photos that were released. And this is right near the USC campus in downtown Los Angeles, probably about a 30 minute or so drive away from the home where Rob Reiner and his wife, Michelle, were stabbed to death. This is just south of downtown Los Angeles.
Starting point is 00:02:36 This is the LAPD gang unit, actually, who went in and found Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old, put him there in handcuffs, arrested him, and took him to the L.A. County jail. This is a look outside the home in Brentwood, on the west side of Los Angeles, where those murders happened. And we understand that Nick Reiner was actually living on the property, not in the house per se, but in another adjacent building there, a guest house there on the property in Los Angeles. He was not there when he was picked up. And in fact, he was not there when the bodies were found. The bodies were discovered by one of Rob Reiner's daughters there inside the home, found her mother and father stabbed to death there inside the home. And that's when the search for Nick Reiner began. So we continue watching the live feed there in Los Angeles.
Starting point is 00:03:22 I can show that to you again and show you what we are looking at there as we are waiting for the district attorney to step up to the cameras. And we are waiting for the LAPD chief as well. And generally when these things happen, the district attorney will lay out in some detail, not to jeopardize the trial potentially and taint the potential jury pool, but he will lay out the body of evidence, a sense of the evidence, what the LAPD investigators found there in some detail. inside the home. Obviously it was just a horrific murder scene. The allegation is that Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old, stabbed with something. We don't know if it was a knife or what he used to stab to death, his own mother and father. Obviously, Rob Reiner is well known all across the country, especially there in Hollywood. We got to know him across the country when he was an actor in the sitcom, all in the family, and then went on to become a very prolific filmmaker and producer
Starting point is 00:04:15 there in Hollywood. So the minute that gets underway in Los Angeles, we'll show it to you live as the district attorney is expected to lay out the charges against 32-year-old Nick Reiner in connection with the murder of his parents, Lauren. All right. Steve, thank you. And tune in tonight for an ABC news special, the Rob Reiner's story, a Hollywood tragedy. You can watch it at 10 o'clock right here on ABC, followed by eyewitness News at 11. And the countdown to Christmas is on. Just eight days left now. And as people are in the final stretch of holiday shopping, we are taking a look at how tariffs are impacting holiday prices. DeWanth Hogarth is joining us live now in Briar Creek with what this means.
Starting point is 00:04:49 for your wallet. DeWan? Yeah, Christmas is just next week, and a number of people who I spoke with here outside of the Briar Creek Target, they tell me they still have a bit of shopping left to do, but they're also of being very mindful of how they're spending and stretching their money, as they say tariffs are having an impact on what they buy and spend. Are you just looking around? Emily Hall and her four kids are getting ready for the Christmas holiday, but on the wish list this year. Dipers are so expensive. Baby toys are expensive. Everything is just very,
Starting point is 00:05:19 expensive you know it's really hard for some families the cost of big ticket items are out of reach Christmas is tough for us this year actually you know I'm to stay at home mom and we have one income so we're just you know getting what they need and she's not alone other shoppers are minding how they're spending their money I find that true with people I work with we discuss it all the time what do they say you know pretty much the same they have a set list and they're trying to not waste time or money you know these days days, things are, you know, tight.
Starting point is 00:05:50 And even focusing on what money can't buy, like Ashley Snyder, whose mom is living with Alzheimer's. I need more time. The move as part of a trend, experts are seeing this year as tariffs are impacting how people are spending their money and what they're spending it on. I enjoy the gift cards, especially for places where I can eat, get coffee. We give gifts that are more experience oriented than price tag oriented. We may not have everything that we won't, but we have everything that we need. and that's the most important. According to the National Retail Federation,
Starting point is 00:06:22 the average American consumer will look to spend $890 this Christmas holiday season down from last year. Next year, hopefully can be a better Christmas for us. And the Saturday before the Christmas holiday is known in the industry as Super Saturday. According to the National Retail Federation, a record 158.8 million American shoppers
Starting point is 00:06:45 are set to hit the stores. And as you just heard, they're going to be extra mindful. of how they spend their money and what they spend their money on live in briar creek this afternoon dwan hoggard a bus 11 eyewitness news i love the perspective of we don't have everything we want but we have everything that we know and that's what we have to remember this christmas duan thank you and more economic news the jobs report shows the u.s added 64 000 jobs in november a sign that the labor market is slowing that is a significant decline from 119 000
Starting point is 00:07:12 jobs added in september the unemployment rate ticked up to 4.6 in november from 4.4% in in September, and much of that reflecting federal employees who accepted a deferred resignation offer. And sales at U.S. retailers were flat in October. According to the Commerce Department, retail sales were unchanged in October from the month before. That is down from September's 0.1% increase and the weakest monthly reading in five months. Sales at clothing and accessory stores rose 0.9% while business at furniture and home furnishing stores increased 2.3% likely due to to rising prices because of tariff costs. Most furniture, as you're probably well aware,
Starting point is 00:07:53 is made in China. ABC News has a new price tracker. It allows you to see the price of items at your grocery store and in other regions. Head to ABC11.com to find that free resource. We had a warm up around here today. Everyone's talking about it like we're in the 80s. It did feel good though, Cruz.
Starting point is 00:08:10 Yes, it really did. So it's crazy what 24 hours can do for our temperatures. And today was just the start of the warm up that's gonna linger for several more days. So tomorrow, several degrees warmer than today. Thursday and Friday, we could be around 60 degrees. Friday though, those tipters come falling throughout the day. And so it'll be a bit cooler as we start the weekend,
Starting point is 00:08:29 warmer as we're ending out the weekend. But tipters at this hour, reaching the low 50s for most of Central North Carolina today. And so let's compare this to 24 hours ago. We are running anywhere from 15 to 20 degrees warmer than this exact time yesterday. So that sets you up for a nice evening ahead. So if you're heading out to Deepak tonight,
Starting point is 00:08:48 Yes, it's still going to be chilly. Tipters will be in the 30s, but yesterday we were actually in the 20s throughout the evening hours. So it would be a great night to head out, just dress warm. And then tomorrow morning, we're going to start today
Starting point is 00:09:00 with tipters in the upper 20s to around 30 degrees. The afternoon highs should once again top out in those middle to upper 50s. So I've actually had to bump up tomorrow's highs just a little bit. 59 and Raleigh, the clouds increase.
Starting point is 00:09:12 It'll turn milder off of a breezy south wind. We'll talk about what that tipter does as we go into this weekend behind the front that's going to bring us some rain. That's coming up in your seven day forecasts. Back to you. All right, Cruz. Thank you. Now to some other local headlines in your speed feed. First, fire officials confirming one person died in a house fire in Wake County. Chopper Levin was over the scene of the fire on Mitchell Mill Road and Zebulon. Several agencies responded to the three alarm fire.
Starting point is 00:09:37 The Rollsville Fire Department says it happened around 10 o'clock this morning. They say the single story home was completely engulfed in flames. When the crews arrived there, firefighters found one person dead inside the home. else was inside at the time. The cause of that fire is now under investigation. In Durham, a man is now facing charges after a deadly shooting last month. Authorities say 53-year-old John Singleton was shot
Starting point is 00:09:59 and killed inside a business on Moorhead Avenue. 52-year-old Hashim Black is now charged with first-degree murder. New at four, Attorney General Jeff Jackson and 35 other attorneys general reached a settlement with Hyundai and Kia for selling millions of vehicles that did not have industry standard anti-theft technology. That led to a tenfold jump. in thefts, car thefts, between 2020 and 2023 as part of the settlement.
Starting point is 00:10:22 Honda and Kia have agreed to equip all future vehicles sold in the U.S. with that anti-theft technology, certain customers will also be able to file a claim for restitution for certain expenses. And that is your speed feed. Amber, back to you. Lauren, thanks. Now turning to the future of Raleigh's historic Liggin Magnet Middle School. Today, Wake County School leaders meeting to talk about the three renovation options they're considering for the Southeast Raleigh School.
Starting point is 00:10:48 We'll get to that in just a moment. We first want to go back to L.A. for that special report. During director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michelle Reiner, their son Nick Reiner, arrested in their murders. Let's listen to him. We're going to hear from the Chief of Police, Jim McDonald, from the Los Angeles Police Department, and the district attorney Nathan Hockman. Just want to level expectations, we will allow some time for questions,
Starting point is 00:11:10 but because of this is a preliminary investigation still, very active, it's being filed as we speak, There's not a lot we're going to be able to say right now. Also, if you would, please quote one question at a time so that we can hear the question and answer it appropriately. So if we could have that decorum in here, DA Nathan Hockman. My name is Nathan Hockman. I'm the district attorney of Los Angeles County. Today I'm here to announce that our office will be filing charges against Nick Reiner, who is accused. of killing his parents, actor-director Rob Reiner, and photographer, producer, Michelle Singer-Riner.
Starting point is 00:11:53 These charges will be two counts of first-degree murder with a special circumstance of multiple murders. He also fesses a special allegation that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon, that being a knife. These charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, or the death penalty. No decision at this point has been made with respect to the death penalty. We have requested and currently Nick Reiner is being held without bail. Now before I in announcing these charges I also want to announce that they're just that they are charges. Charges are not evidence. Evidence is something that we will be presenting in a court of law to meet the standard of proof we meet in every criminal case,
Starting point is 00:12:46 which is beyond a reasonable doubt, to 12 jurors who you'll unanimously have to find that we've met that standard to prove the charges we bring to court. Right now, with respect to the process, once the charges get filed this afternoon, Nick Reiner will be then brought to court. He is going through medical clearance, something that everybody who gets arrested and gets held in a Los Angeles County Sheriff's
Starting point is 00:13:16 Department jail goes through. Once he is medically cleared, he will be brought to court to be arraigned on these charges. At that point, he will enter a plea of guilty or not guilty. Now, prosecuting these cases involving family members are some of the most challenging and most heart-wrenching cases that this office faces because of the intimate and often brutal nature of the crimes involved. Rob Reiner was a brilliant actor and director, an iconic force
Starting point is 00:13:48 in our entertainment industry for decades. His wife, Michelle Singer-Riner, was an equally iconic photographer and producer. Their loss is beyond tragic.
Starting point is 00:14:04 And we will commit ourselves to bringing their murderer to justice. I want to thank LAPD Chief McDonnell, who is here today, along with Deputy Chief Allen Hamilton from the LAPD and LAPD Captain Scott Williams and the entire robbery homicide division, who literally has been working around the clock to gather the evidence that have led to the charges we're going to be filing today. Also from my office, I have Assistant District Attorney Maria Ramirez. I have Director of Specialized Prosecutions,
Starting point is 00:14:43 John McKinney. I have our Head Deputy of Major Crimes, Craig Hum. And I have the two prosecutors who will be leading the prosecution in this case, Assistant Head Deputy of Major Crimes, Habib Balian, and Deputy District Attorney for Major Crimes Jonathan Chung. They will bring their decades of experience to holding this murderer accountable for his actions. At this point, again, you will hear in the media rumors, you will hear speculation, you will hearsay. What I'm asking everyone to do is to rely on trusted sources. If it doesn't come from the district attorney's office, from LAPD, from the coroner's office, or from the courtroom itself, and there is a good chance you are hearing misinformation.
Starting point is 00:15:33 Because at the appropriate time, the actual evidence involved in this case will be presented in a court of law. So I ask for your patience until that is done. But again, please do not rely on rank speculation, rumor, or hearsay to believe that you understand anything about what went on in this case. I'd now like to turn it over to Chief McDonald. Thank you. Well, good afternoon and thank you all for being here today, and it's with deep sadness today. address the tragic loss of Robert Michelle Reiner. On December 14th, 2025, LAPD officers from our West Los Angeles Division responded to a death investigation at the 200 block of South
Starting point is 00:16:16 Chadbourne Avenue, which is in the Brentwood section of Los Angeles. Upon entering the residents, they discovered the bodies of Mr. and Mrs. Reiner. Detectives from our robbery homicide Division Homicide Special section immediately initiated a comprehensive investigation. The evidence gathered led to the arrest of their son, Nick Reiner, who was taken into custody later that night without incident in the Exposition Park section of our city. Today the Los Angeles County District's Attorney's Office has formally filed charges against Mr. Reiner for the murder of his parents. This case is heartbreaking and deeply personal not only for the Reiner family and their loved ones, but for our entire city. We extend our deepest
Starting point is 00:17:03 condolences to all of those who are affected by this tragedy. I want to take a moment to recognize and thank our criminal justice partners, the district attorney's office led by D.A. Hockman and everyone who worked tirelessly on this investigation. Their swift action, professionalism, and commitment to justice have been instrumental in bringing clarity and accountability to this case. The LAPD remains steadfast in our mission to to protect life and uphold justice. We will continue to support the Reiner family and ensure that every step forward is taken
Starting point is 00:17:35 with care, dignity, and resolved. Thank you. Well, I want to take some questions. Yes, right here in the front. Could you talk about why you feel this case rises to special circumstances? So special circumstances is a situation where in a new one of the enumerated factors that lead to elevating in some ways a first degree
Starting point is 00:18:03 murder case to a special circumstance first degree murder case occurs one of those special circumstances is called multiple murders here we have two and it qualifies under the definition of multiple murders to allege the special circumstance in this particular case i saw over here Nick Reiner found and was there any evidence on him indicating of crime and did he say anything? Yeah, he was found with good solid police work, investigative tools used by robbery homicide and gang and narcotic division detectives with the U.S. Marshal Service Task Force involved as well. So we're thankful for the work that was done. I won't go into talking about what was found or anything that could potentially taint the investigation. Given Nick's history of drug use, was there any indication that he was under the influence at the time of this crime?
Starting point is 00:18:58 No, thank you again. That's another question. I can't touch. And following up on that, is there any evidence of mental illness in his background? Yeah, you can do it. I'm sorry, please repeat the question. Is there any evidence of mental illness in his background beyond the addiction? The evidence, any evidence, if there is any, of mental illness for his background, will be coming out in the hearings to, that will occur. We anticipate again after the arraignment the process will go through the normal process a case like this goes through. At the appropriate time, if there is evidence of mental
Starting point is 00:19:30 illness, it will be presented in court and in whatever detail the defense seeks to do that. Mr. Hockson. Yes, right here. Are you anticipating any kind of significant delay in bringing this case to trial on on the basis, perhaps the dick they have to give your significant psychological evaluation, which would also give your people what they need in the way of what might describe. Why does actions happen? We don't anticipate any significant delay more than is involved in a first-degree murder case with special circumstances. These are some of the most serious
Starting point is 00:20:07 charges that a DA's office can bring against anyone. And we anticipate that the discovery that we will produce to the defense will be robust. It will be very involved they'll want adequate time to review it though again they'll want to go through every single factor that they can ascertain in the defense of mr nick reiner so again this will proceed along the tracks that many of the first-degree murder cases to proceed do i anticipate it being particularly fast no i i anticipate it being very thorough yes right here cause of death and time of death you share any information about We are not at this time.
Starting point is 00:20:47 Yes. Yes, right here. Did the members of the Riner family help with your investigation so far? And did they provide any information or assistance which led to Nick being arrested? Let me defer to the chief on this. Hi, Deputy Chief Fallon Hamilton, Chief of Detectives. We don't have any specific information we're going to release at this time regarding the families' information they provided. As we move forward, that information,
Starting point is 00:21:14 information will be discussed in the appropriate venue, which will be the court. You are watching live coverage here of the charges just announced moments ago, two counts of first-degree murder against Rob Reiner's son, Nick Reiner, accused of stabbing to death both of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michelle Singer-Riner, in their home. Of course, they were discovered over the weekend. Nick Reiner, their son is 32 years old. ABC News has reported here that it's believed that one of the daughter actually found the parents in the home and at the time Nick Reiner was no longer in that home you heard the DA asked a number of
Starting point is 00:21:51 questions there would this take longer given special circumstances in this case he said he did not expect it to take any longer than a typical case that includes charges as serious as these two counts of first degree murder he said he's accused of killing his parents with a knife he said the maximum sentence is life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty. He did not indicate which of those two options the DA plans to go after in this case. Again, Nick Reiner, the son of Rob and Michelle Reiner, now two counts of first degree murder in the stabbing deaths of his parents. That's one breaking story we're following. There are also new developments at this hour in the urgent
Starting point is 00:22:34 manhunt in a separate case. I want to show you these images real quick before we go. The gunman wanted in the deadly mass shooting at Brown University. These images just in this afternoon. As we know, two students were killed, nine injured. The FBI releasing this new surveillance of this person of interest, dressed in black, wearing a mask, walking through a neighborhood. They have pieced together different pieces of video investigators going frame by frame through the growing collection of video, studying his height, his weight, his walk. The FBI now offering a reward up to $50,000 for any information leading to the arrest. or the conviction of the suspect.
Starting point is 00:23:11 That's in the Brown University mass shooting case. We're following that as well. But again, the big story just moments ago, two counts of first-degree murder now. Nick Reiner, formerly charged in the stabbing deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michelle Reiner. That was the DA from Los Angeles speaking just moments ago. Our coverage will continue on ABC News Live, ABCNews.com.
Starting point is 00:23:31 For many of you here in the East, we go back to your local news, and I'll see you a short time from now for World News tonight. Take care. This has been a special report from ABC News. All right, let's recap what we just heard there from David Muir's team there and from the DA in Los Angeles County as well as the chief of police there. We understand that there will be two counts of first degree murder with special circumstances because multiple people were killed, including both parents. Nick now going through a medical clearance, which they said is standard.
Starting point is 00:24:03 It's very standard there. And it's typical for most people, he will be arraigned. He will then have to enter a plea. and then the case will proceed from there. This, of course, stemming from their death this weekend on Sunday, December 14th. And we know that he had a history of drug addiction, and they are trying to determine if there was any mental illness there as well. Nick was arrested near University of Southern California following the stabbing deaths of his parents.
Starting point is 00:24:29 And we just heard from L.A. District Attorney Nathan Hockman, who said that those special allegations are also of personally using a dangerous and deadly weapon. He is accused, of course, of killing his parents with a knife. Those charges do carry a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole or the death penalty. And Nick Reiner is 32. He is now being held without bail. I don't know if we have some sound from the DA and the police chief talking about the toll that this is taking on them to start this investigation. Maybe we can play that back. these cases involving family members are some of the most challenging and most heart-wrenching
Starting point is 00:25:11 cases that this office faces because of the intimate and often brutal nature of the crimes involved. This case is heartbreaking and deeply personal not only for the Reiner family and their loved ones but for our entire city. And Chief McDonald vowed to continue this case with care, dignity and resolve, not just for the family, but for the community there in Los Angeles. So tune in tonight again for an ABC News special, the Rob Reiner story, a Hollywood tragedy. You can watch it at 10 o'clock right here on ABC, followed by eyewitness news at 11. We'll be following the latest out of California. We want to move on here now at 4 to a scam warning this holiday season.
Starting point is 00:25:53 Americans are expected to spend more than $1 trillion this season. And the Better Business Bureau says this is a prime time for scammers looking to take advantage of shoppers. So here are the top holiday scams. you should be aware of. First, watch out for misleading social media ads. Always research before you buy. Review privacy policies on holiday themed apps. Be wary of free apps that could collect your personal information. As more consumers make online purchases, scammers often send fake shipping notifications to send fishing emails and text about package deliveries with links and clothes that may allow unwanted access to your private information or download malware onto
Starting point is 00:26:28 your device. The last few weeks of the year are a busy time for charitable donations, Experts warned there are a lot of fake charities this time of year. Finally, watch out for fake toll collection text if you're planning to drive for vacation this holiday season. And of course, we're counting down to the new year. They do drop a ball in Times Square, but here in Raleigh, we drop an acorn. And this morning, Cruz moved that famous 1,200-pound copper sculpture from its home in Raleigh City Plaza. It's going to spend the next few weeks at artist David Benson Studio, where the acorn will get a nice polish ahead of the big night to ring in 2026.
Starting point is 00:27:02 All right, as the year comes to a close, North Carolina appears to be headed into 2026 without a full budget in place. Up next, we're hearing from local educators pushing for state funding. And a major victory for the state after a win in court results in millions of dollars in FEMA funding for North Carolina. Judge ordering FEMA to restore millions in canceled disaster mitigation funding. More than 60 infrastructure projects in North Carolina will benefit from these funds. Penelope Lopez is in Fayetteville with House City officials plan to allocate the money. Those funds not only help communities across the triangle, but also here in the sandhills. $18 million will go towards restoring stream banks along the waterways and four bridges, including this one right here.
Starting point is 00:27:58 Personal safety and public safety shouldn't be determined by zip code or affluence. The city of Fayetteville is set to receive critical funding. This comes on the heels of a federal lawsuit filed by North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson and several other states against FEMA. The lawsuit argued the Trump administration abruptly canceled previously approved funding for climate resilience projects, stripping away roughly $200 million from the state, $18 million earmarked for Fayetteville. With the funding now restored, city leaders say it will help reduce erosion, mitigate flooding, and upgrade aging infrastructure, including bridges on Russell and Person Street.
Starting point is 00:28:37 We had areas, particularly on the east side of our community, that when the river flooded and when those banks overflowed, it hit our downtown. So we've invested through an infrastructure bond and increasing the size of the infrastructure under the ground to make sure the water moves smoothly. We've replaced other bridges and other parts of the downtown area, and we have neighborhoods now that we're analyzing to make sure that the entrance waves are safe and passable, in the event that we get another one of these storms. City officials say they invested more than $3 million when they were notified that the federal funds
Starting point is 00:29:08 had been pulled. Now Mayor Colvin said he called the AG last night, thanked him for his commitment to cities like Fayetteville. Coming up at 5.30, a look at the projected timeline. Reporting in Fayetteville, Penelope Lopez, ABC 11, eyewitness news. Penelope, thank you. Now to some other headlines in your speed feed. First, Wake County Schools today taking us inside
Starting point is 00:29:31 the Swift Creek Elementary School and Garner to see their new sensory gym. It's called the Focus Factory. The play area uses specialized equipment designed to help them regulate emotions, build confidence and start their day ready to learn. The gym was paid for through a grant of more than $2,000. RDU Airport is closing out the year with some new flights. Frontier Airlines will add non-stop flights to Cancun, Mexico and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Service to Cancun begins March 7th.
Starting point is 00:29:57 Service to Fort Lauderdale begins April 2nd. American Airlines also recently added service to Punta Kana, and three more routes are slated to start at RDU this month, flying to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Cancun and San Juan. It is game day in Chapel Hill. UNC men's basketball team returning to the Dean Smith Center to play East Tennessee State University. The Tar Heels are on a three-game winning streak, and they are looking to remain undefeated at home. Tip-off for tonight's game is at 8 o'clock. You can look for highlights and reaction on eyewitness news at 11. That is the speed feed, Amber, to you. All right, Lauren, thanks. Now to the latest in the budget stalemate here in North Carolina as we approach the new year. State lawmakers say no floor votes are expected this week, meaning that we will head into 2026 without a full state budget. Last week, eyewitness was there when Governor Josh Stein changed course and reversed Medicaid cuts put into effect by NCDHHS earlier this year amid a lack of funding. But the governor said that the state could only afford those full reimbursements until the spring and called. on state lawmakers to come back to Raleigh and get a budget and Medicaid funding across the finish line.
Starting point is 00:31:05 Healthcare advocacy groups are warning that the stalemate could have big impacts on Medicaid in North Carolina, while some educators say they are seeing the repercussions already. Whereas when I started teaching, you could find plenty of folks who wanted to teach in North Carolina. And now it's very, very hard. And we can't just rely on people who are willing to make a financial sacrifice to, to serve their communities. When those cuts happen, services start to decrease, support staff start to decrease,
Starting point is 00:31:37 doctors start to put the brakes on accepting Medicaid patients. The current stalemate stems largely from a dispute over taxes between the Republican-controlled House and Senate. And we have reached out to Senate President Phil Berger and House Speaker Destin Hall for the latest in those budget negotiations and so far have not heard back. Coming up, a family displaced than a dozen firefighters injured in a massive home fire and explosion in Rowan County.

Starting point is 00:34:57 I get out in front of them by 100 yards before they wake up to it. Today's electric powered cars are fast and designed for an experience like no other. They're really fun. As soon as the light turns green, I'm all the way across the intersection before any of the gasoline cars are even halfway. And it's just that torque that really does it. With a simple tap of the pedal, an electric car takes off, emitting zero emissions in the process. So high torque, they're quiet vehicles.
Starting point is 00:35:36 They're a pleasure to drive. EVs are very innovative out the gate. And that innovation decades in the making. By entering a five-digit code and pressing run, it activates everything on the car. We've come a long way from this electric vehicle demonstration, all the way back in 1996. And similar to a car, you have a battery state of charge gauge, which is like your gas gauge on your car.

Where you can, like if you're parking in front and there's a barricade or something there, you can just spin it around and see what obstacles are potentially in the vicinity. At electricfor-all.org, drivers in the market for a new EV can search for the

So electric vehicles are on the bleeding edge of technology, whether it's over-the-air software updates, whether it's regenerative braking, whether it's the infotainment center, whether it's vehicle to home ability to power your home if there's an outage. Some electric cars are even equipped with self-driving features, meaning that you, as the driver just have to plug in your destination and then enjoy the ride you just press a button on the screen and it's like i mentioned it's kind of like having a magic carpet it just takes off and takes you charlie edsity abcc 11 eyewitness news driving into the future is sponsored locally by electric for all
