Coming up on eyewitness who's at four, a woman is dead. A man is in custody after a shooting in a Wake County neighborhood.
We're talking with the neighbors who say that they are in shock.
And NC State is searching for its next head basketball coach after Will Wade announced.
He's heading back to LSU after just one year on the job.
We have reaction from the university.
And after weeks of no pay, TSA officers at Raleigh, German International Airport, tell eyewitnesses,
they believe they're not seeing some of the donations meant to help them.
we're hearing from the union president and about the growing frustration.
Right now, live coverage from your local news leader, keeping you connected to your community
and your first alert forecast. Here's what's happening where you live. This is ABC 11. I
Witness News. Right now, four neighbors in a Nightdale community are on the edge after a woman
is shot and killed. That's scary. I mean, I live right down the street.
The latest on the investigation as deputies worked to find out what led to that shooting.
Thank you for joining us for the news at four. I'm Barbara Gibbs.
I'm Amber Repenta. We are learning more about that overnight shooting in Nightdale that left one woman dead.
It happened around 1230 this morning at a home on Broken Arrow Court.
Deputies say that is where they found. Forty-year-old Jessica Wells, she had been shot and she died this afternoon from those injuries.
Elena Athens is joining us now from Nightdale. So Elena, I know that a man was
taken into custody and connection. What more can you tell us about this investigation?
Yeah, Amber, we do know that a man was taken into custody, but the Wake County Sheriff's
Office is not identifying him right now. A spokesperson says that charges are pending against him
from the shooting at this home just behind me. The Way County Sheriff's Office says a 43-year-old
woman died at the hospital after a shooting this morning at a Nightdale home. When deputies arrived,
they found Jessica Wells with a gunshot wound. She was taken to the hospital and there died of her
injuries. That's scary. I mean, I live right down the street. A neighbor who asked that we don't
share her identity says there is some relief a man has been taken into custody. The sheriff's
office believes this is an isolated incident. I don't understand this is a quiet neighborhood and
nobody ever comes around. It's bad or anything. I enjoy walking through my neighborhood. I don't
have no fears or nothing, but now it puts the fear of God in me. So we are still working to learn about
at the circumstances that led up to the shooting.
I did ask that of a Way County spokesperson,
and she tells me that's what investigators are looking into right now.
We're live in Nightdale, Elena Athens, ABC 11, eyewitness news.
All right, Elena, understandable how those neighbors are concerned tonight.
Thank you for that report.
New developments in the Zoe Welsh murder.
She is the Ravenscroft teacher killed at her home.
Today, prosecutors are hiring an expert to determine if the suspect,
Ryan Camacho is competent to stand trial.
Camacho's defense team has stated,
that he is unable to understand the nature of the crimes he is accused of committing.
Now to the war with Iran, President Trump today holding his first cabinet meeting since the war began,
insisting Iran wants to make a deal to bring an end to the war.
The president urging Iran to accept his ceasefire proposal, quote, before it's too late.
It comes as Iranian state media reports Iran rejected Trump's 15-point peace plan,
and publicly denying talks are even underway.
Who would negotiate?
They are begging to make a deal.
We'll see if we can make the right deal.
And if they make the right deal,
then the strait will open up.
Hormuz Strait will open up.
Meanwhile, Israel says it assassinated the Iranian leader
controlling the strait of Hormuz.
Today's cabinet meeting comes
as the Pentagon is preparing to surge
as many as 5,000 American troops to the Middle East,
some already on the way.
Among them, 1,500 paratroopers
from the elite,
take an airborne division, the Army's premier ground combat unit.
And Akela Davis is joining us live in Fayetteville with more on this.
So Akela, how is the local community there reacting to this news?
The local economy here in Fayville relies heavily on the military, small businesses like this one that I'm standing in front of alone, Yakin Road.
It's called All-American Military Surplus.
Support from Fort Back soldiers and their families is everything, even as the war in Iran unfolds.
But we are preparing here at All-American Surplus to make sure we got this packing list items, items needed for schools, or potential deployments.
Craig Black runs the All-American Military Surplus along Fayetteville's Yacken Road corridor.
He says as the conflict in the Middle East continues, he's noticed that soldiers coming into the shop are more tight-lift about operations and potential deployments.
He tells me things feel different this time.
Soldiers aren't saying if they are deploying or training.
Instead, he says they're buying items they purchase if they were going away for extensive periods of time.
This comes as a defense official confirms that elements of the 82nd Airborne Division will be deploying to the Sincom area of responsibility.
This includes countries in the Middle East.
Craig walked me around his store telling me that he continues to sell out of a few things.
One of the items is the larger big duffel bags with the size zipper on them, so it gives them a little extra capacity for deployments or training.
So it's a little bigger than a typical issued bag.
And ahead of thought, I'll introduce you to the mother of an 82nd airborne division soldier,
what she's saying about her feelings around the conflict in the Middle East.
Reporting live in Fayetteville, Akela Davis, ABC 11, eyewitness news.
See you in an hour with more from Fayetteville.
Akela, thank you.
Meantime, Governor Josh Stein, reacting to the deployment of the 82nd Airborne today,
sharing this statement all next, saying in part, quote,
when the Pentagon calls the 82nd Airborne often is the first to answer the call.
Anna and I are keeping these brave soldiers and their families in our prayers.
Well, as TSA workers continue another week without a paycheck, efforts are underway here in the Triangle to help TSA workers through food and gift card donations at RDU.
But now IWitness News is learning that some of those workers say that the help being donated by the community is not getting to the employees who need the aid.
John Dowding is joining us live at RDU.
So John, what are you hearing about this?
Barbara, Amber, definitely some concerning claims from right here at RDU.
Some of those officers who we spoke to tell us they're seeing people in the community donating gift cards to help those TSA officers impacted by that partial government shutdown.
But they're telling us that they're seeing that some of these officers, these TSA officers, haven't gotten any of those gift cards.
And they're also saying, though, that some others have gotten multiple gift cards.
Some folks may have put the last $5 or $10 in the gas take to get the work today.
Questions being raised tonight by some TSA officers at RDU as they go another week without a paycheck during the partial government shutdown.
Since the shutdown, we've seen an outpouring of support from the community, including food drives to help TSA employees not receiving a paycheck to gift cards being donated.
But tonight, eyewitness news is hearing from some TSA employees that they're not seeing those gift cards.
And now the TSA workers' local union president is demanding transparency from leadership of the TSA at RDEU.
If you're in possession of a gift card today, you should start distributing it today so they can get to work tomorrow.
And this randomizer is not working.
Now, again, we reached out to the TSA leadership as well as RDU here today asking for answers and transparency about what exactly is going on here and to respond to those claims from TSA officers.
We're still waiting to hear back from them.
But again, the union president saying this is really just causing a lot of confusion and frustration among some of these TSA officers here at Rdu.
Coming up here at 5, you hear from one of those TSA officers who says they are seeing that those donations being made, but they're saying that it's not getting into the hands of those who need it most.
Live here from RDU, I'm John Dowding.
ABC 11, eyewitness news.
John, super frustrating when people are just trying to help and do the right thing.
Thank you so much.
Let's turn now to first alert weather.
Our stretch of warmer weather continues.
temperatures across triangle reaching the upper 70s today.
Yeah, it's nice out there.
Great day to get out, soak up some of that fresh air.
That's a pretty cool shot circling around with drone 11 over Dick's Park today.
Where this woman and her dog were out there taking in some vitamin D and enjoying the blue skies.
We're all just Steve Stewart is here now with a check of the forecast.
Really nice today.
Really nice.
As soon as you pet the dog, it'll be a little, a little puff of club of pollen that comes up from that.
Yeah.
All right, tomorrow's going to get warmer.
We're going to be in those mid-up upper.
80s flirting with 90 degrees and late in the day we'll get some thunderstorms
probably before sunset in our northern counties but around sunset in the triangle and
point south so most of us daytime is going to be fine and if we hit these numbers
we could tie or break a record both in Raleigh and Fayetteville so numbers are
going to be up there and then we fall off a cliff 30 degree drop as we go into the
weekend and then each day will moderate and get warmer and warmer right back to
the mid 80s by that time we get to the middle of the week so this is our one
chance at rain and it's really tomorrow evening and after
After that, we have another long, dry stretch coming our way.
Most models at about a third of an inch or to last, so this isn't going to be a major soaker,
but the rainfall could come down fairly heavily at time.
We're in the 70s right now flirting with 80 in many spots.
79 are pretty popular number out there.
Evening plans if you're heading to the D-Pack tonight to see Britt Floyd, the moon, the wall,
and beyond 76 when you walk in, and about 69 by the time you're going to be heading home.
So no jackets are required.
But again, coming up this weekend, the night.
numbers are really going down. More on that coming up in the seven day forecast.
All right. See you soon with more. Steve. Thank you. And right now at four,
Will Wade out as NC State's basketball coach after just one season. He announced his
decision to leave Raleigh and return to LSU, where he had previously worked in the same role.
And this afternoon, NC State Athletic Director Boogh, addressing the change in what comes next
for the pack. Let's go to Michael Perchick. He's been there all day.
He joins us live from Carter Finley Stadium with a lot of reaction to this big news, Michael.
Amber, all the warm feelings that accompanied Will Wade's introductory press conference a year ago inside Reynolds Coliseum replaced with frustration here at Carter Finley, where staff documented his departure.
I was as surprised and shocked as anyone else as this occurred based on the previous conversations that we had had.
NC State Athletics Director Boot Corrigan detailing its disappointment over Will Wade's apparent about face, including from a discussion that
two had Tuesday night.
There was no reason for me in my job not to believe the words that I was hearing coming back
to me from Coach Wade.
But the following day, Wade apparently had other plans, a reversal that stood in stark
contrast to prior statements of commitment Wade had made.
I believe a number of people may have been at the ACC tournament where the answer was
a definitive.
I'm going to be here after we lost in the AC tournament to Virginia.
There was another confirmation.
After the NCAA tournament, there was another confirmation.
His agent sending an email informing the school of his resignation,
ultimately coming to an agreement on a $4 million buyout,
enabling him to pursue the head coaching job at LSU.
In his loan season at the helm in Raleigh,
the Wolfpack went 2014, finishing 7th in the ACC,
before being knocked out in the first four last week.
Wade posting a statement on X, writing in part,
this was not an easy decision because of how much respect
and appreciation I have for this university,
but the opportunity to return to Louisiana State University is deeply personal.
It's a chance to go home to a place that means a great deal for me and my family.
And coming up at five, we go one-on-one with Alex Nunnily, a guard on that most recent Final Four team for the Wolfpack,
why he is sharing some optimism of what could lie ahead for this basketball program.
In Raleigh, I'm Michael Perchick, ABC 11, eyewitness news.
See you in an hour with more. Michael, thank you.
In the meantime, we're hearing from UNC Chapel Hill leadership as the school launches its search for a next head basketball coach.
The school's board of trustees met again today with Chancellor Lee Roberts and board chair Malcolm Turner addressing the media there.
Addressed the next steps for hiring a men's basketball coach saying athletics director Bubba Cunningham and future AD Steve Newmark are running the process.
And the board declined to give specifics though on regarding a timeline or what they're looking for in their next coach.
I don't have much to add to what I said yesterday.
Hubert and Leslie Davis are phenomenal people.
Coach Davis will tell you that he met his wife here at Carolina and became a Christian here.
His uncle's jersey is hanging in the rafters.
Hubert and Leslie are Carolina parents.
They love the university deeply and the university loves them back.
Now, the board says it will act only in the approval process and will wait on recommendations from Cunningham and Newmark once interviewed.
have taken place. We'll keep you updated.
Still head here, 4 o'clock, multiple people facing charges.

Eyewitness News. We are Local News Weeknights 4 to 630 and 11.
New here at 4, we are learning about a major child exploitation operation resulting in multiple arrests in Nash County, multiple agencies, participated in that operation, which was led by the Nashville Police Department.
And police say since the investigation started, 16 people have been taken into custody and more than 30 charges have been filed in connection to the investigation.
That includes attempted statutory rape and indecent liberties with a child.
Let me be clear. We've already faced enough challenge.
violence, narcotics, and crime in general. But when it comes to those that prey on our children,
we will not wait for you to act. We will find you first.
Police say the offenders range in age from 19 to 87 years old. And in Robinson County,
the FBI is investigating members of the Fairmont High School baseball team following hazing allegations.
According to the sheriff's office, the incident occurred on a Robinson County public schools activity bus following a game against 71st High School.
During the course of that investigation, detectives determined that that incident began in Cumberland County and it continued into Robinson County.
And because of jurisdictional concerns, the FBI has been asked to take over the investigation.
In Wilson, a 14-year-old is dead after being shot.
Police responded to a home in the 1,300 block of Woodside Drive in Wilson after reports of a shooting.
That's where they found the teenager who'd been shot.
The young victim died at the hospital.
Police have not released the teenager's identity.
No arrests have been made yet.
Former Venezuelan leader Nicholas Maduro appeared in a New York court today.
He and his wife captured by U.S. forces in January and brought to the U.S. to face narco-terrorism and other charges, both pleading not guilty.
His attorney arguing the case should be thrown out due to legal expenses.
ABC's Rina Roy is at the federal courthouse in Manhattan with more.
Protests outside the courthouse in New York today, where ousted Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Celie Lerner.
of Flores made their second appearance before a federal judge. Maduro was shackled at the ankles and said
good morning in English to the gallery and complimented his attorney's appearance saying he looked
quote elegant. Maduro appeared thinner and grayer after spending three months in jail. The judge
deciding today not to dismiss the federal case against them despite defense attorneys hoping the
case would be thrown out saying U.S. sanctions are blocking Venezuela from paying the legal fees.
Prosecutors say Maduro and Flores still have access to their own.
own money, but Maduro, despite having lived a lavish lifestyle for years, says he cannot afford
to pay those fees. The judge questioned the national security need for sanctions now that Maduro
is no longer in charge and expressed concern on how he'd obtain adequate counsel. It comes as the
Trump administration gradually warms relations with Venezuela after U.S. Special Operations Forces
captured Maduro and Flores in Caracas in January, bringing them to New York to face charges.
Both charged in a four-count indictment, prosecutors accusing Maduro and his co-defendants
of working with drug traffickers in Colombia and Mexico to move tons of cocaine into the U.S.
over the past 25 years.
Today, President Trump suggesting Maduro could face more charges for allegedly facilitating
the transport of people and drugs into the U.S.
He emptied his prisons in Venezuela, empties his prisons into our country, and I hope that
charge will be brought at some point, because that was a big charge that had.
hasn't been brought yet.
After the hearing, a convoy seen leaving court,
taking Maduro and Flores back to the Brooklyn detention center,
where they're both being held pending trial.
Both have denied wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty to all of the charges.
Now, if convicted, Flores and Maduro could face a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Rina Roy, ABC News, New York.
All right, let's go to meteorologist Steve Stewart with the forecast today.
boy this up and down stuff continue to happen but it's been a nice day today that's for sure yeah not bad a little breezy out there but tomorrow's going to be up there i mean we're flirting with 90 in a couple areas so yeah i'm not flirting with it
hey outside right now we got some fair weather clouds a little bit of smoke off in the distance as well that haze that you're seeing uh you're going to notice that as we go throughout the early evening hours record high tomorrow it's possible in a couple areas in raleigh and in fayne is likely going to come after sunset if you want to enjoy the warmth the daytime shift you're going to enjoy the warmth the daytime shift
be fine. Brief cool down as we go into the weekend. Numbers coming down big time, but they're going to go right back up. And by Tuesday, we'll likely get back to the 80s and we'll stay in the 80s all the way through the rest of the week and then fall down a little bit as we head into the following weekend as we get into the April first weekend in April. There's the front tomorrow and that's going to blast on through. And you can see the cooler, drier air is going to move in here in a big way. We've only had four days of measurable rainfall so far this month and a huge deficit. That's how most months have looked.
of the last seven months have had sizable deficits. Just last month we had a tiny little surplus. So not looking good as we go into the growing season. We have rain tomorrow night, but it's likely a third of an inch or less. So it's not going to be a big time soaker. With that said, it could rain fairly heavily, briefly in any one location. So here's seven in the evening and we're seeing some showers starting to move in. And don't take this. Literally, this could be off a little bit. Other models are slightly faster. But later in the evening hours, we get showers, maybe some
rumbles of thunder, some heavy rain briefly, and then it moves out once we get past midnight,
and then we're going to clear things out as we go throughout the day. But look at that cold air
coming in behind the front. There's six o'clock, and it blasts through, and we'll see those
numbers tumble quickly as we go through the evening hours tomorrow. 79 into North Hills
right now with a breeze at about 16 miles an hour. That's a good 15 degrees warmer than yesterday.
Wide spread upper 70s, fairly uniform temperatures out there. Really nice for a walk. If you're
allergy sensitive though to pollen. The breeze has kind of blowing that pollen around. But look at the numbers coming down to the low 70s by the late evening hours. And tomorrow morning, you're likely going to want the sunglasses. We'll have plenty of sun to start and the numbers really warming up. So your morning commute, no headaches expected. Front's going to come on through. We'll be in the 50s on Saturday. Sunday will moderate as a high moves offshore. We'll get back to those mid-60s. Heading up to the mountains this weekend. We're looking pretty darn good with temperatures in the 50s and 60s. Beaches. Beaches.
have a jacket. It's going to be a bit on the chili side for sure with those numbers for the most part, likely in the 50s. So rain after sunset tomorrow, a chilly breeze on Saturday. The crop walk should be fine. We get warmer as we go into Monday and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, welcoming April to those mid-80s. And then Thursday, a question mark, maybe we'll get a shower. The European model's bullish on that, but more likely as we get into Friday.
All right. Thank you so much, Steve. Coming up next at four, crypto-backed mortgages.

Still to come on eyewitnesses for severe drought conditions continue to impact farmers across Central Carolina.
Straight ahead, we are talking with one local farmer who says that the drought is really taking
a toll on his finances.
We are local news.
ABC 11 eyewitness news continues now.
Right now for dry conditions continue to impact our state.
The latest drought monitor is showing most of our state is under a severe drought level,
as you can see here and farmers are now feeling the full weight of these conditions.
Penelope Lopez is live in Durham County with more on the drought.
So Penelope, I know that you spoke with some farmers today.
What have they noticed?
That's right.
Farmers say that this has been a tough season with rising prices and then you add an ongoing drought.
They say they're just trying to stay afloat.
It's going to be tight.
We're going to be pinching pinnings.
Fifth generation farmer Alan Williams says the drought,
is taking a toll on his finances.
The main thing is we're fixing to start getting ready to plant corn
in a couple of weeks and that's what we really need to rain.
Tucked away in person County, Williams Farm,
grows crops like soybeans and corn.
But because of the drought, he says the soybean season,
which usually starts in mid April, could be delayed.
Allen has tried different ways to manage rising production costs,
but the drought has forced him to buy barrels of hay
just to keep his cattle fed.
biggest impact has been so far has been to my cows because of my ponds that don't have water
they are some of them are almost dry before we got the snow and that is only the beginning of his
challenges on top of that the price of diesel needed to keep the farm running has climbed even
higher my diesel field for my tractors has went up two dollars a gallon over the last four weeks
and the diesel fuel for my trucks and road tractors it's uh it's going up well it went from 339
I paid $5.59 this morning. That's a bigger problem.
And Alan warns that if the drought continues, then the growing season for corn may be delayed.
And this isn't just the only challenge he faces.
Fertilizer is also high. It's increased since the start of the war.
We'll have more on that coming up in the next hour.
Live in Durham, I'm Penelope. Lopez, ABC 11, I wouldn't assume.
Yeah, we really could use a good soaking.
Penelope, we'll see you soon. Thank you.

Still ahead at 4, the ROTC instructor killed during the deadly shooting at Old Dominion University is
being honored. The two medals of honor he received after the shooting that took his life.
And transgender women athletes are now excluded from the Olympics, what we know about the new policy
from the International Olympic Committee. New at four, the memory of Lieutenant Colonel
Brandon Shaw is being honored. Shaw was shot and killed by a man previously convicted of terror
charges. Shaw was at work at the time on the campus of Old Dominion University earlier this month
when the attack occurred. Shaw served more than 20 years in the military, even serving with the
82nd Airborne Division on Fort Bragg. The U.S. Army Cadet Command tells eyewitness news.
Lieutenant Shaw received a posthumous Purple Heart and Legion of Merit. Both awards are among
the most prestigious to be given to service members. Federal agents continue to investigate
the ODU shooting, saying Muhammad Jalo opened fire on ROTC classroom where Shaw was teaching
as a professor of military science.
New guidelines ban transgender women
from competing in women's events at the Olympics.
All athletes participating in those events
must undergo genetic testing.
The International Olympic Committee announced
the new policy on female eligibility
following a board meeting.
The policy that we have announced
is based on science,
and it has been led by medical experts
with the best interests of athletes at its heart.
The scientific evidence is very clear.
male chromosomes give performance advantages in sports that rely on strength, power, or endurance.
At the Olympic Games, even the smallest margins can be the difference between victory and defeat.
So it's absolutely clear that it would not be fair for biological males to compete in the female category.
