Next on eyewitness news,
Golf legend Tiger Woods involved in a rollover crash in Florida.
Investigators are on the scene.
What we're learning about his condition and a possible cause.
Also breaking right now after weeks of no pay,
President Trump has now signed an executive order
directing Homeland Security to pay TSA agents.
What this could mean for those long lines at airports nationwide.
A bank robbery and wild police chase ends in a crash in Wake County.
What we know about the robbery suspect behind the wheel.
And the Wake County Sheriff's Office making an arrest in a nearly 30-year-old rape investigation,
how they were able to use DNA to find the man allegedly responsible.
Plus, Duke is just hours away now from their Sweet 16 matchup against St. John's.
Traylon Miles is live in D.C. where the Blue Devils are set to take the court.
I wouldn't know season four starts now.
Right now, live coverage from your local news leader, keeping you connected to your community,
and your first alert forecast.
Here's what's happening where you live.
This is ABC 11, I Witness News.
Breaking right now at 4, President Trump
take his executive action to pay TSA workers
after a potential deal stalls in Congress.
Thank you for joining us for the news at 4.
I'm Barbara Gibbs.
And I'm Amber Repenta.
Money is on the way for TSA workers.
President Donald Trump signing a promised executive action
that will pay transportation security administration employees.
Starting Monday, workers will be paid back pay
for all the weeks of pay that they've missed.
And this news comes as lawmakers have, of course, been at a standstill for two months over broader DHS funding.
The partial government shutdown leaving TSA workers without pay for weeks, which resulted in long security lines at many of the nation's top airports.
Penelope Lopez's life at RDU now with more on this move.
Penelope.
Good afternoon.
TSA workers are now receiving tax alerts saying that they will be getting paid for period three, four.
and five. And this is all coming after the Senate passed a bill today to fund DHS excluding ICE.
But that was short-lived. Well, we flew a couple weeks ago and the airport was terrible. We were in TSA for like over an hour.
And immediately like today it was like night and day different. Katie Keffer flew in from Philadelphia.
She says the past weeks have been nothing short of chaotic with long lines. But today,
it took her less than five minutes.
I would suspect that it would pick right up where it left off.
But kudos to the workers who came and came to work every day and not get paid.
That's hard to do.
Everybody's situation is different.
Some people can afford to do that.
Early Friday morning, the Senate reached a deal to approve a funding package that includes
TSA, FEMA, the Coast Guard, and the cybersecurity and infrastructure security agency.
The package does not include funding for ICE or parts of CBP.
The deal was short-lived as House Republicans rejected the Senate-passed DHS bill Friday afternoon,
instead announcing that they will plow ahead with a short-term bill to fund the entire DHS
through May 22nd.
Travelers like Rod Jones from Chicago say they're glad to see potential progress made towards
TSA workers getting paid, especially with rising costs.
He says it took him less than 15 minutes to pass through CBCP.
A lot of people can't, especially in this day and time with the rising gas prices and everything else.
It gets a little rough for a lot of people, for a lot of families, for a lot of different reasons.
So, but thank God that that was passed.
Thank God we can kind of get back to a normal routine.
Get back to a normal routine, but I don't know how that will be for now since things are far from over.
Since the shutdown, 500 TSA workers have quit and another thousand.
and have been calling out sick.
Now we know that the House will be voting tonight.
We'll bring you those updates as soon as we get it.
For now, live at R-DU.
I'm Penelope Lopez, ABC 11.
Eyewitness News.
All right, Penelope, thank you.
We're tracking breaking news unfolding in Florida right now.
Tiger Woods has been involved in a rollover crash.
Hi, everyone.
I'm Steve Daniels tracking those details here in the Breaking News Center.
Tiger Woods involved in this crash this afternoon at about 2 o'clock in Jupiter Island, Florida.
That's where he lives.
of West Palm Beach, Florida. It happened on a two-lane street, essentially a neighborhood street that parallels the beach.
Photos from the scene show this vehicle flipped over on the driver's side. They have not yet released details about Tiger Woods condition or the circumstances leading up to that crash this afternoon.
You might remember back in 2021, Tiger Woods was involved in another crash. This one happened in Southern California.
It was that rollover crash off the side of that hill there. He had very serious leg injuries. He was actually trapped inside that SUV after that roll over.
crash and Rancho Palace Verde's south of Los Angeles.
Again, the details very limited coming in from Jupiter Island, Florida, where Tiger Woods lived.
All we know right now, he's been involved in this rollover crash this afternoon.
We don't yet know his condition, but we will be learning more through the afternoon here in the
breaking news center.
And at 5 o'clock, the sheriff there in Martin County, Florida.
We'll have a news conference.
We'll bring that to you live here on eyewitness news at 5 o'clock in the next hour, Barbara.
All right, Steve, looking forward to more information on that.
Thank you.
Also breaking right now for a Secret Service Agent on Farm.
former first lady Jill Biden's security detail is injured after accidentally shooting himself in the leg with a service weapon.
It happened at the Philadelphia International Airport this morning.
The agency says the injury is not life-threatening.
No one else is hurt.
The former first lady was not at the airport at the airport at the time, but not present when that incident took place.
And we are also following breaking news here in the triangle.
A judge rules a Durham mother charged with killing her young son incapable to stand trial.
Andrea Faust had been held at the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women in Raleigh,
according to court documents on Monday.
She was found hoarding Tylenol pills.
She claimed that she was keeping those pills for a future suicide attempt.
Faust has now been ruled a danger to herself and ordered to undergo intensive psychiatric care.
On February 12, police say Faust killed her three-year-old son and attempted to kill her two-and-a-half-year-old son at their home in Durham.
She then attempted to die by suicide.
And court documents also revealing she also tried to die by suicide four days later while being held in the Durham County Jail.
That attempt resulted in multiple bone and spine fractures requiring surgery.
She is now at the central regional hospital in Butner, which is a state psychiatric hospital.
In Wake County, part of Jones Salsage Road and Garner is back open this afternoon after a bank robbery suspect led police on a chase that ended in a crash.
Chopper 11 flying over that scene.
And we know that this all started with a bank robbery at the Wells Fargo,
Western Boulevard in Raleigh, the suspect handing a note to the teller and then making off with an undisclosed amount of cash.
And minutes later, the suspect spotted by the highway patrol on I-40.
The suspect then crashing into another car after exiting on Jones Sausage Road.
Cindy Bay has been on this story all day.
She joins us live near the Jones Sausage Road exit with what we're now learning.
Is it back open, Cindy?
Yes, Amber, the roads are back open.
the suspect identified as a 35-year-old man with outstanding warrants is seriously injured.
A bank robbery at a Wells Fargo in Raleigh ended up in a multi-car crash that shut down this stretch of Jones Sausage Road just east of Garner.
Everything happened in minutes.
This was a situation where timing just worked out in everyone's favor.
This robbery took place at 9.19 a.m. at 9.29 a.m. our trooper picked up this violator on
40 near South Saunders Street. Officials say 35-year-old Ishmael Santiago fled in this black
Audi sedan. Highway Patrol described how the trooper kept eyes on the car. This person was driving
in a very reckless manner. A lot of this driving was taking place on the shoulder of the roadway.
Because of the dust and dirt and gravel that was being kicked up into the air, that was how our
trooper kept sight on this individual. Troopers say Santiago went up the ramp, crossed the grass
median and slammed into a silver car. The impact set off a chain reaction when one car stopped
suddenly and another couldn't slow down. Both Santiago and another person were taken to the hospital.
First responders cut his seatbelt and pulled him from the car. No state highway patrol members
were injured during this incident. There was no contact or use of force that had to be used
with the suspect and never got to that point. The investigation is still underway and as mentioned
earlier. The roads are back open. You can see that it's busy around this time of hour.
And this is after hours of cleanup from the train reaction chain reaction crash.
How a GPS tracker helped authorities locate the suspect's car and move quickly is ahead on
eyewitness news at 5. In Garner, Cindy Bates, ABC 11 eyewitness news.
A long investigation there throughout the day, Cindy. Thank you.
New at 4. The Wake County Sheriff's Office makes an arrest in a nearly 30-year-old rape
investigation. It happened on December the 24th, 1998. The case went unsolved for years until
recently when the sheriff's office received a positive match from combined DNA index system
after submitting a sexual assault kit for analysis. After a thorough investigation,
48-year-old Daryl Debnam was arrested in connection with that case, the sheriff's office
expressing the importance of solving this case.
These unsolved cases, it brings a lot of closure, not for the sheriff's office, but more importantly
our victims and their families. The fact that we can find justice for an incident that happened so long ago
and that we still actively were looking and not closing the door on this, it's very gratifying.
Debtam is now charged with second-degree rape. All right, let's turn now on a Friday to first alert
weather, our stretch of nice weather continuing today, the wind blowing through these beautiful bright yellow tulips
near Crabtree mall today. That's the picture of spring, isn't it? Right now we're watching for storms,
though this evening.
Meteorologist Don Schwinnaker's in the First Alert forecast center with the severe weather headed our way, Don.
And the good news is we shouldn't see any severe, maybe an isolated thunderstorm.
Live look at First Alert Doppler net tonight.
We are dry.
We had live into Durham.
The sun's out right now, mostly cloudy, 86 degrees.
We've tied the record for today.
We haven't broken it.
The record of 87.
A look at your evening ahead.
The rain chances ramping up about 8, 9 o'clock.
That's when we see it getting up around 80 to 90 percent chance of showers.
and those temperatures will tumble as the rain moves out.
We'll talk more about that.
Your first alert forecast coming up in just a couple of minutes, ladies.
All right.
That's coming up right now.
Let's talk a little basketball.
There is just a little bit of excitement on the campus of Duke University.
The men's and women's basketball teams still dancing in March Madness, both set to play tonight in the Sweet 16.
So you know who's in the middle of all this.
Trayvon Miles, he's on the road with the men.
He's in D.C.
And Trey, I should point out that that jacket that you have on, that's an ABC.
11 color jacket, not a Duke blue.
That is. Yes.
Yeah, Carolina fans, NC State fans,
please don't message me to an ABC 11 jacket.
But I am, and I do happen to be at a place where all the Duke faithful
and a lot of Duke fans here in D.C. will be tonight.
We are on the corner of 8th and E Street.
We're not at the arena, even though it's game day.
We are at Penn Social where the Iron Dukes are throwing the biggest party for
alums and fans alike.
I want to just take you around here and show you the spread as people begin to make their way in here.
These are beans, they've got pins, they've got posters, everything that you can imagine as they get ready for the game tonight.
I'm being told that they're expected to be 250 people inside of this place, maybe 300 here tonight.
There are already a lot of people inside.
I've seen some former Duke players in here.
I just saw Athletic Director Nina King walk in.
and everybody's having a good time right now,
as there are some big donors that are expected to be in this place as well.
So much to do as first gear up for the game.
I am told that fans will actually be here inside of this place,
and a lot of them are expected to have tickets.
But in the event that they don't,
there's a really big screen right here that you can watch the game as well.
Probably be a better seat than what you get inside of the arena.
There's some cornhole over here.
What's going on, guys?
Some cornhole over here.
I'm going to give it a try.
Because the last time I tried this, it went in.
We'll have to see where this one goes.
Very close.
I'm going to try it one more time.
Let me try one more.
That's at least some points.
Guys, Duke is expected to score a lot of points today.
We'll get a vibe check from some fans in here at 5 o'clock.
How about that?
We love the vibe check.
I said try one more time because I think if you hit it close enough,
one was going to go with.
Trey, rubbing elbows with the Duke VIPs.
I'll take the points.
Yes, all right.
We'll see you in an hour.
He's having so much fun.
Thank you.
So ahead here 4 o'clock, a Johnson County couple out thousands of dollars after falling victim to a jury duty scam the warning officials now have for other residents.
Also, the war with Iran escalating Israel, targeting Iran's nuclear facilities today, what this could mean for potential peace deals between the U.S. and Iran.
And we're taking a live look at I-40, Avent Ferry Road traffic's sailing along on both sides just fine.
Could see some showers working in tonight.
We'll talk about that coming up as we head to break.
Here are your traffic hotspots brought to you by the first alert weather team.
The ABC 11 First Alert Forecast team is working to keep you safe.
One is across the region.
Some cloud cover starting to build.
That rain is going to push on through.

part of that investigation.
A Clayton couple loses nearly
$12,000 in a jury duty scam
involving a caller, impersonation
a Johnston County Sheriff's Deputy. The caller told the couple they'd missed jury duty
and could avoid criminal charges by making electronic payments to have the warrants withdrawn,
believing that the call was legitimate. The couple deposited the money into a Bitcoin
machine, and that's when a bank teller told the couple they may be getting scanned, and it turns
out they were. Officials remind residents that law enforcement agencies do not request payments
over the phone or demand cryptocurrency to resolve legal matters.
Governor Stein highlights his commitment to rural infrastructure and all rural North Carolinians.

The governor's appearance comes after his recent launch of a rural listening tour, gathering feedback across the state.
And that is your speed feed. Amber back to you.
All right, Barbara, thanks. And now to the war with Iran, Israel, targeting Iranian nuclear assets today.
and there are new reports that the U.S. is considering sending 10,000 more troops to the region.
ABC's Devin Dwyer has the latest now from Washington.
Today, just hours after Israel threatened to escalate and expand its campaign against Iran,
Iran's nuclear facilities coming under attack.
Several new reports say the Pentagon is considering sending an additional 10,000 U.S. ground troops to the Middle East.
We can achieve all of our objectives with our ground troops,
but we are always going to be prepared to give the president.
that it's maximum optionality and maximum opportunity to adjust to contingencies should they emerge.
And less than 24 hours after President Trump once again extended his deadline for Iran to open up
the Strait of Hermuz to shipping traffic, Iran today doubling down.
A newsreader on state TV announcing the Islamic Republican Guard Navy closing the straight
to any ships to and from ports of allies of the U.S. and Israel.
Three Chinese cargo ships were turned away today, and Iran is said to be tightening its chokehold on the strait with a toll booth policy charging ships to pass through.
There are the Sun in the Iranian regime that are going around saying that they want to make the Strait of Hormuz tolling thing.
They want to make it permanent. That's unacceptable. The whole world should be outraged by it.
President Trump today hosting farmers at the White House.
How good is our military?
As American agriculture is being impacted by the war.
hit by rising gas prices and fertilizer prices,
as much of the world's fertilizer also passes through the strait of Hormuz.
It's a definite shock to the system.
I mean, when one of your main products that you need goes up 47 percent, two weeks,
it's hard to digest that and adjust to that.
U.S. officials tell ABC News
more than 300 service members have been injured so far,
including 10 seriously.
Most of those injuries are said to be traumatic brain injuries.
The Pentagon says 13 Americans have been killed in action in the Iran war.

Thank you.
Our own forest gun over there.

Forest gut forecast.
You're right.
I mean, we may see rain on Easter a couple of weeks from now, so that is good to see.
We've got a worry, though, for tomorrow we need to watch out.
Just don't burn anything tomorrow and you'll be fine.
The National Weather Service is showing an increased danger for wildfires.
There's even a red flag warning out to the west of us.
see even higher winds. But from 11 to 8 o'clock tomorrow, just no, not a good day to burn or be
careful with your butts if you throw your smoke out the window or just don't do it. You could cause
a wildfire. Not seeing any rainfall right now on First Alert Doppler. That will change later on
tonight. Live look into downtown Fayetteville on the self-help sky cam, 86 and sunny. We check on
temperatures. We've tied the record of Raleigh at 87. Fayetteville, you're two degrees below the

Coming up here at the bottom of the hour,
things getting heated on Capitol Hill this week
when Durham County Sheriff Clarence Burkhead
testifies on the role of local officers
in immigration enforcement.
Do you need some water?
Because I think your pants are on fire.
I wouldn't assume sitting down with Sheriff Burkhead
after his week in our nation's capital.
Plus, a reunion more than 20 years in the making,
a North Carolina mother who went on a Christmas shopping trip to Kmart and never returned
is reunited with her daughter. The special moment caught on camera.
When WestJat first took flight in 1996, the vibes were a bit different. People thought

Local news, ABC 11 eyewitness news continues now.
Right now at four, Durham County Sheriff Clarence Burkhead back from the nation's capital,
where he was one of five witnesses asked to testify before a hearing on the role of local
officers in immigration enforcement.
Our Elena Athens sat down one-on-one with the sheriff about his testimony and current
immigration efforts in the county.
Sheriff Clarence Burkhead is back.
on the job today in Durham County. He spent the last couple of days in our nation's capital,
and he says he was prepared for what he calls political theatrics. Do you ought to be ashamed
to that? Durham County Sheriff Clarence Burckhead testified Wednesday at a Senate hearing on sanctuary
policies. Burkhead declared Durham is not a sanctuary county. Republican Senator John Kennedy
questioned Burkhead, who is a Democrat on his immigration stance. Do you need some water? Because I think your
pants are on fire.
Kennedy, press Burkhead's handling of a Mexican national and alleged gang member who was convicted of manslaughter in Durham and released after serving prison time.
I can't say that I did not honor the detainer.
ICE was notified that they could come pick up the individual and for some reason they did not.
When I met one-on-one with Burkhead, he reiterated he is not working with ICE on current immigration efforts and cause the tactics disturbing.
It infuriates me. That's not law enforcement. And I really get upset when they refer to.
than themselves as law enforcement officers.
That's not the way we are trained.
That's not the way we service our community or serve our community.
And so these tactics, in my opinion, and based on my training, are illegal.
I also asked about ICE arrests and detainers.
And if they've waned a bit since the beginning of Operation Charlotte's Web,
what the sheriff is sharing coming up all new at 530 in Durham.
Elena Athens, ABC 11, eyewitness news.
Today a memorial service was held in Raleigh for former St. Augustine

Yes, I do. I understand life happens and we all go through things.
I still want her as my mom and as a friend and just go from there.

Today marks 18 months since Hurricane Helene ravaged Western North Carolina and recovery is still underway.
Governor Stein is now calling on state lawmakers to invest $792 million to aid in that recovery.
82 million to cover loans for small businesses, cash-strapped towns, and to promote Western North Carolina,
10 million to help toward costs like rent, 20 million to continue building homes.
The largest chunk, $452 million would be to secure federal disaster matching aid.

Belinora McCollum grew up in Raleigh's historic.
Method community. And now she's breaking barriers as one of a few black women in the country
working as a certified sports agent for the NFL, MLB, and NBA. Akila Davis has her story.
Women's History Month reminds me from where I started. When Belinora McCallum was a little girl,
she spent summers here in Raleigh's method community, a historically black community that her
family has called home for generations, dating back more than a century. This is the basketball
course we will walk down to and play in, sometimes after church, soccer field, that we would go
and run around in and create our own games.
Safe to say where some of your love for sports was birth?

This award, a storybook ending for Bob's journey at Disney,

It has meant more to me than I can say.
Bob's illustrious career began right here at ABC News
more than five decades ago.
I started at this company.
was a studio supervisor working on shows like AM America,
which is the precursor to Good Morning America,
and ABC Sports and a lot of other things,
never expecting that I would end up having the opportunity
to run one of the greatest companies in the world.
A visionary at his core,
Bob helped the company soar to new heights,
welcoming Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and 21st Century Fox
to the Disney family.
No, family, put it on the most years.
And in 2019, unlocked the Disney vault for the last.

I literally feel it inside me.
And there's more to come.

A Wisconsin mailman is getting a little extra help.
You could call it on one of his around.
Look at this.
This video is showing the mailman and a gang of turkeys following behind him.
You can see them following him to the door and then they wait.
And then once he's done, he goes back out to the sidewalk.
They follow him off to the next house.
He must be giving him treats or something.
It's not clear.
it's unclear why they're happy to have a human friend.
He's even saying that he doesn't want them around, but either way,
he is just pretty unimpressed by them,
and they seem to like his nonchalant attitude.
That's funny.
All right, now to a baffling.
He said, she said moment between a judge and a defendant.
You need to weigh in on this one.
Allegedly she's driving during her court hearing.
So watch as the judge berates this woman for doing that,
driving while attending a Zoom court hearing despite her persistent insistence that she was not.
Am I crazy or does it not look like you're driving that car?
I'm not driving the car. I'm a passenger in the car, sir.
Okay, so this went back and forth. But then the woman appears to check her rearview mirror.
She actually climbs out of the vehicle as well while on camera and the fed up judge renders a default
judgment against her, marking her as a no show to court. Also saying that she lied to him.
So we'll see what happens there.
And of course, March Madness.
How's your bracket looking?
It's underway.
One teen has discovered the secret so far to a perfect bracket.
Meet 14-year-old eighth grader Otto Shellhammer.
He is from Pittsburgh, and he says he knows zilch about college basketball,
but he's managed to successfully pick all of the correct winners so far in the women's NCAA tournament.
48 correct picks, just 16 remaining of the more than 41 million brackets submitted.
in the largest contest for both the men's and the women's tournaments.
All have fallen except for one, his.
And in case you're wondering, Otto has picked Texas to win it all.
I heard today on GMA3, though, that he said he wished he picked Yukon.
Okay. I mean, that's always a good one to go with for sure.
I think he's doing pretty, he should go get a lottery ticket next.
Hey, I got to go back to that driver with the judge on.
I mean, can you just not stop the car for a minute?
If you watch the whole video, she's really something.
It's like, show me the driver then.
And she goes, I can't right now.
I have to get us permission.
Oh, okay.
Yeah, the whole thing is just nuts.
It's definitely worth a look if it comes into your feet.
She's extra.
Yeah.
Extra.
Yeah.
I can see why.
All right.
We're taking a look.
She's not extra like me.
Is that what you just said?
I wouldn't, I wouldn't be like, yeah, I'm in the driver's seat.
But don't worry, I'm not driving.
Not going to happen.
