Starting point is 00:00:00 Right now for your first alert to a burn ban statewide. And we're on the scene of breaking news unfolding in Samson County. Three people shot a gunman on the run after a shooting at this apartment complex in Clinton. We're live on the scene talking to eyewitnesses. Plus, we're checking on the status at RDU Airport today as TSA workers finally start getting back pay. And a former NC State basketball legend on the court could be returning now to NC State as head coach. What we're learning about Justin Ganey as new reaction is coming in from students on campus. Memphis and Raleigh.
Starting point is 00:00:33 Right now, live coverage from your local news leader, keeping you connected to your community and your first alert forecast. Here's what's happening where you live. This is ABC 11 eyewitness news. Today, a forest statewide burn ban remains in effect across the state due to hazardous forest fire conditions. Thank you for joining us for the news at four. I'm Barbara Gibbs.
Starting point is 00:00:56 Hi, everyone. I'm Steve Daniels. Amber is off today. The NC State Forest Service issued that ban. for open burning over the weekend because of the drought conditions we're having around here. Let's get the latest from meteorologist Cruz Medina and our first alert forecast center. It's also a little breezy out there compounding the conditions. Oh, absolutely. So the combination of dry conditions as far as moisture content in the air is kind of lacking right now.
Starting point is 00:01:17 And then we've got those breezy conditions. You combine that with ongoing drought conditions and that is creating that elevated fire danger. So the drought monitor is showing severe drought for most of Central North Carolina. And if you're watching from areas like Nash, Edgecombe, North Hampton or Halifax counties, you're actually in extreme drop condition. So again, that burn ban is statewide and it's until further notice. So that will likely not be lifted anytime soon. And that's because the rain chances are going to remain fairly low over the next seven days.
Starting point is 00:01:45 But I can tell you this, we will at least see the moisture content and the air rising. So it will be a bit muggy as we go into the middle and end of the week as tipsters jump into the 80s. So that's going to help at least lessen the risk of forest fires as far as naturally started ones. But even things like throwing a cigarette butt on the ground could still ignite a fire even with that increase in moisture. All right, back to this evening. We've got dry conditions on tap for walking the dog. Tiptures will be in the 70s. Overall, a nice evening.
Starting point is 00:02:14 So definitely get outside if you can. Tipter stay in the mid-60s all the way through about 10 p.m. And tonight, we're only cooling down into the 50s. So it's going to be a mild start to your day tomorrow. will rise pretty quickly as we go throughout the morning hours and tomorrow's going to be warmer than today. We should end up in the lower half of the 80s for highs. And then we're going to crank it up another notch going into the middle of the week. We'll talk about that and any rain chances we have in the seven day forecast coming up shortly. Barbara. All right, Cruz, thank you. And with that statewide burn ban in place, anyone found burning debris or campfires could be fined $100 plus court costs and would also be responsible for any costs associated with getting a wildfire they started under control.
Starting point is 00:02:55 It's absolutely imperative that folks adhere to this burn ban so that we can eliminate any future and potential ignition sources so that we can concentrate resources on the fires that are already burning that we need to. And with the current forecast, the Forest Service expects the statewide ban to remain in place for the foreseeable future. If you do notice a fire burning, Jackson says to call 911 right away. And now is a great time to download the ABC 11 mobile app. You can get the latest watches and warning straight to your device. And you can also check DopplerNet and the 70 forecast anytime. Okay, let's get to the breaking news unfolding in Samson County this afternoon. A manhunt is underway right now for the person who shot three people at this apartment complex.
Starting point is 00:03:39 Yeah, the shooting happened just after 1245 in the Eastover Terrace apartments in Clinton. Our Penelope Lopez has more from a neighbor who tried to help one of the victims. Penelope? Good afternoon, Barbara. This is still an active scene. Earlier today, we saw multiple police vehicles and now if you pan over to the home, it is currently blocked off. Clinton police saying three people were shot and airlifted from the Samsung Regional Medical Hospital to Wake Med. As you mentioned earlier today, I spoke with a next door neighbor who says she heard the gunshots.
Starting point is 00:04:14 To hear the gunfire and then to get outside to see him laying there like that just really messed me up. Glenda Belton, who has lived in the neighborhood for 15 years, is still in shock over what happened. Police say they responded to a call in the East Over Terrace apartments around 12, 45 p.m. Chabra 11 flew over the scene, showing multiple case markers at the scene. I spoke with Glenda, the next door neighbor, she says that right after the gunshots, a man stepped outside and fell to the ground. I went to him and took it, was pressing his chest and told him to keep breathing. that don't give food. And then all of a sudden he just opened his mouth
Starting point is 00:04:53 and we gas him for air. And Glenda says that she saw the man earlier today on his front porch and she's shocked by how things quickly escalated. She did also tell us that in that home, that she says that the sister was living there. We're still trying to work on gathering information at this moment.
Starting point is 00:05:14 Investigators telling us that the suspect is still not in custody. For now, live in Clinton. I'm Penelope Lopez. ABC 11 eyewitness news. Yeah, let us know if you get a description of that gunmen on the run right now. And if you get an update on how those people, the shooting victims are doing at WakeMed. We'll look for more through the evening. Penelope, thanks.
Starting point is 00:05:30 Right now at 4. Terminal 1 at RDU is reopened after an anonymous threat forced an evacuation early this morning. That led to chaos for passengers on Southwest and Breeze Airlines. TSA and RDU officers got an anonymous call about a bomb threat. Staff and passengers were forced to wait outside for almost two hours until the All Clear was given. Many flights were delayed leading to long lines and wait times at the airport. And the other big story at RDU today, TSA workers getting their paychecks today for the first time in a month and a half. But the Department of Homeland Security says most workers will get at least two full paychecks for the past two pay periods. But that's not all the money they have missed out on, the money they're owed from the federal government.
Starting point is 00:06:10 The DHS says some employees may have delays and getting those payments. And you know those TSA workers are feeling frustrated right now. Absolutely. Hogan is live at the airport to show us how these lines are looking today as those TSA paychecks arrived. Juan? Well, Barbara Steve, good evening to you and rather a good afternoon to here at R2. This is a terminal two. You just missed the rush about 20 minutes ago or so.
Starting point is 00:06:33 Since we've been here, we've noticed a little bit of an uptick in the mood from RU or at least TSA workers who are on staff today. And it comes as the TSA Workers Union has shared with us that more than 500 agents have quit their jobs since the start of this. this partial government shutdown back in February. And yes, many of them received their paychecks today. However, a lot are saying that they received incorrect amounts. At the start of one of the busiest weeks for travel of the year,
Starting point is 00:07:00 today marking the start of TSA workers receiving back pay for missed paychecks due to the partial government shutdown. It's a sorry situation and that's what's happening in our government right now. Susan and Al are both heading to San Francisco today and say TSA workers are doing all they can. I tell the TSA guys, thank you for being. You're right. If I was one of them, I probably would have walked off like a lot of them do. According to a TSA local union rep workers were notified by text this weekend that they'd be receiving retroactive pay dating back to the start of the partial government shutdown.
Starting point is 00:07:32 However, workers tell IWitness news that a portion of what they're owed is missing. One TSA worker telling ABC's Elizabeth Chulsey that the pay does not go far enough. So it's, no, not what I expected. It is better than not having anything, but I don't think it's going to change the needle very much on the lines. The officers that left are not coming back. Today at RDU, TSA workers could be seen with donation boxes full of food and other items as paychecks begin to hit their accounts. It's a big sacrifice. I can't work without getting paid, especially when you have a family to support.
Starting point is 00:08:07 No, it's not just easy. And back here locally at RDU Airport, we're still working with the local union rep to find out. how many callouts were actually taking place here at R2U today. And it comes as just this weekend we've learned yesterday, callouts decreased slightly, just 10.5% of TSA workers across the country called out. Now coming up for you at five, we're gonna find out what additionally is also being done and how travelers are still reacting to what's happening here at TSA. We're live at RDU Airport this afternoon.
Starting point is 00:08:39 Duane Hogarth, EBS11, IWitness News. All right, Duane, we'll see you for your next report. Thank you. In the meantime, as the funding debate continues in Washington, Verizon is offering flexible payment arrangements for federal workers affected by the shutdown. The phone company says, in part, quote, we want to ensure that employees from the TSA, the U.S. Coast Guard, FEMA, and the FAA and others stay connected during this uncertain time. End of quote, any federal employee facing hardship can reach out to the company for flexible payment schedules and waived late fees. Let's take a look at some other local headlines right now in your 4 o'clock speed feed. First in Raleigh, one person is injured, another person is in custody after a stabbing late last night.
Starting point is 00:09:18 This happened on Idle Wild Avenue, just after 1130 last night. Authorities say the victim is expected to be okay. They think the stabbing was part of a domestic dispute. 31-year-old Le Quail Fennell is now charged with assault with a deadly weapon, communicating threats, and also resisting a public officer. The Comberley County Sheriff's Office identifying the deputy who was shot and killed at a home in Hope Mills. Investigators say Captain Adam Bean died after a dispute with another off-duty law enforcement officer. The shooting happened late Friday night on Seattle Slu Lane.
Starting point is 00:09:46 The SBI is now investigating what led to that gunfire. And happening today, a traffic alert in downtown Raleigh. Water System work is closing part of Person Street for the next couple of months. The work is happening between MLK Boulevard and East Davies Street. Intersections are also closed at South Street, Lenore Street, and Cabrera Street. Those closure is expected to last through the end of May. That's the speed feed. Barbara over to you. All right, Steve, thank you.
Starting point is 00:10:08 Well, happening now pushback over Duke Energy's proposal to raise rates. Here is a live look now. It's a rally happening in Raleigh at Halifax Mall. Many people are expected to speak out about higher electricity bills, including remarks from Congresswoman Deborah Ross. It comes ahead of today's State Utilities Commission hearing. Our Jemice Price will be joining us live from the rally at 5 with more information. All right. Also happening now in Raleigh, NC State is in the process of hiring a new basketball coach just days after Will Wade resigned from that role after one year to return to LSU. That's right. So reports are circulating all day today suggesting the Wolfpack will hire. former NC State Guard Justin Ganey, who is currently an assistant with Tennessee.
Starting point is 00:10:47 Michael Perchick joins us live from campus. Michael, you've been talking about this all afternoon. Do we know any more information about this? Barbara and Steve, nothing finalized yet, but we are expected to have some confirmation in the next 24 to 48 hours. Look here on campus a sense of excitement and relief, particularly in the wake of how that Will Wade era ended for an alum to be potentially taking the reins. of this program. While no contract has been finalized, a source tells ABC 11 NC State is expected to bring back home
Starting point is 00:11:19 a Wolfpack legend. Who Corgan said it. He wants a guy who is here for the school, wants to represent the red and white on and off the court, and Justin Ganey's that guy. The news of Ganey's anticipated a rival winning the support of Wolfpack Nation,
Starting point is 00:11:33 many of whom publicly endorsed him for the role in the immediate aftermath of Will Wage Resignation last week. He's been the right-hand man for Rick Barnes, who's a tremendous coach. And I think another big part of his story and what you'll hear about, I think, is his ability to recruit in this era. Ganey spent the past five seasons at Tennessee, following stops at Elon, Appalachian State, Santa Clara, Arizona, and Marquette,
Starting point is 00:11:56 as well as a stint as an administrative coordinator here in Raleigh. This will be his first head coaching opportunity. The last time the school hired a first-time head coach was Everett Case in 1946, who eventually made the Hall of Fame. It's very much a gamble, very much a swing for the fences type of hire, in my opinion, where there is some risk with it being a first-time head coach, but there's also a lot of excitement, a lot of possibilities. And with him being an alum, he'll have a little bit of a leg up. And coming up at 5, we'll hear from Rick Barnes, the head coach at Tennessee, who gave a glowing endorsement to Ganey, plus what Will Wade is saying regarding criticism he's faced over his departure from NC State. In Raleigh, I'm Michael Perchick, ABC 11, I win this news. And Michael, we should add this footnote.
Starting point is 00:12:40 We just have some details from Kate Rogerson and our sports team. She just added that the NC State University leaders have announced a news conference coming up on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Lenovo Center where they will introduce the new basketball coach. It is pending approval from the Board of Trustees in Raleigh. But right now, the presumption is it will be Justin Ganey. Yeah, Michael, I did read some of the remarks from the coach at Tennessee. And boy, they were glowing about Justin Ganey and that if people knew him better, they would just want to hire him on the spot. Yeah. Well, and he did interview for the job when Will Wade got it a year ago. So NC State obviously very familiar with him as a player, as a coach, and what he can bring to the Wolfpack.
Starting point is 00:13:18 All right, so we'll wait to put the stamp on it, but it looks really good. It does, yeah. All right, Michael, thank you. And the Tar Heels are also hiring a new basketball coach, as you know. The University fired Hubert Davis after the Tar Heels were eliminated in the first round of the NCAA tournament for the second consecutive year. And as the search continues in Chapel Hill right now, the university is telling eyewitness news, they're pausing discussions about the proposal to relocate the Dean Smith Center. Discussions will resume after that new coach is hired. Cindy Bay will have new reaction from UNC and Chapel Hill coming up on eyewitness News at 5 o'clock in one hour.
Starting point is 00:13:49 All right, we are just days away from the Easter holiday. Law enforcement across the state already ramping up patrols, as we are hearing from the state highway patrol on the efforts to keep people safe on our roads. Also coming up here, UNC Health has added a new leadership role. Find out who the person is taking over that position when we come back. Eyewitness News. We are local news weeknights four to six 30 and 11. Well now to a warning for drivers, a new safety campaign is launching across the state. The highway patrol kicking off what they call the Speed Little Lose-A-Lot campaign.
Starting point is 00:14:24 And between now and Sunday, they'll have increased patrols focused on reducing speeding-related crashes and they hope to save lives. The enforcement alone is not the solution. Real change comes from personal decisions. when drivers choose to slow down, stay alert, and respect the rules of the road. Let today serve as a reminder and a commitment that we will not accept preventable tragedies on our roadways. Together, we can save lives. North Carolina data shows Easter weekend is one of the deadliest on our roadways, followed by Thanksgiving. New at 4, UNC Health announces a change in leadership. Ernie Bovio is named the new regional president of Southeast Coastal Market,
Starting point is 00:15:07 Boveo has been working for Novant Health in Wilmington and previously served as president of UNC Health wrecks in Raleigh. The regional presidential role is new to UNC Health. Bobio will begin in April. All right, now the latest on the war with Iran. And for the first time, we're seeing the aftermath of an Iranian attack on the Prince Sultan air base in Saudi Arabia last week. These are ground-level photos showing what appear to be an Air Force E3 century plane destroyed. The U.S. Central Command is not yet commented on the incident, but an American official confirms an E3 was damaged in a strike on the air base on March 27th.
Starting point is 00:15:41 These surveillance planes cost more than $250 million each. Twelve American troops were injured in that attack. Meantime, there are various diplomatic efforts trying to end the war with Iran. In Pakistan, the foreign minister says he expects the Trump administration and Iranian officials to be meeting for talks in the coming days. President Trump on social media says our country is currently engaged in serious discussions with a new and more reasonable regime to end our military operations in Iran. Well now to the nationwide demonstrations over the weekend with millions taking to the streets and cities and towns across the country to protest President Trump and his policies,
Starting point is 00:16:15 3,000 separate events marking no Kings Day, including dozens in the triangle in Minnesota. Bruce Springsteen performing for tens of thousands of protesters turning out even in some towns where President Trump won the last election like Cass County, Iowa. The protests fueling anticipation for this year's midterm election season as Democrats hope to take back Congress. All right, let's talk about first alert weather on this Monday afternoon, warm and breezy on the campus of NC Central University in Durham right now as the kids are winding down the semester. I'm sure they're thinking about final exams, final papers, all that stuff. And someone getting out for a walk and enjoying this beautiful day. Yeah, absolutely beautiful, warm, pollen everywhere still. Yeah, but at least it's dry, right?
Starting point is 00:16:59 And so overall, nice start to the week. And we're about to crank it up a notch with tipter's rising over the next few days. days. So we're going to see those highs jumping into the 80s as we go into Tuesday and that's going to last all the way through Easter Sunday. But in the mix, not really a whole lot of rain chances, which sounds like a good thing. And so you realize the fact that we are under severe drought conditions in parts of Central North Carolina. And also we have that statewide burn ban that I mentioned at the top of the newscast. So as we go into Easter itself, most of that day is going to be dry overnight Easter and into next Monday. That's when our next
Starting point is 00:17:34 best rain chance over the next seven days arrives. And obviously we've got plenty of time to track that for any changes in the timing. So make sure you check back for updates as we go throughout this week. For your evening walk, it's going to be stunning. We have some clouds around right now, so I'd count on a really nice sunset tonight. Tipters will be in the 70s through about 7 p.m. And then staying in the 60s through 10 p.m. So even tomorrow morning, we're only going to be in the 50s heading out the door.
Starting point is 00:17:58 And even though the clouds clear tonight, winds out of the south are what are going to keep us mild in the overnight hour. So tipters in the middle, 10pper 50 starting the day. We have a sunny sky to start the day as well. And then for the afternoon, we'll call it partly cloudy. Tipters will push into the low 80s across much of central North Carolina. So if you have a tea time early tomorrow morning, great day for a game of golf tomorrow. The afternoon, also great to be outside with dry conditions and those highs in the low 80s.
Starting point is 00:18:27 So it's not overly warm, but it will start to become a little bit more humid throughout the middle of the week. So that's something we really haven't had to deal with so far this year. Hasn't been super muggy. But we are going to see the moisture content rising. And this is actually a good thing. So you might not like the feel of humidity, but the more humid it feels, the more moisture content is in the air. And this could help to lessen the chance of any wildfires starting up.
Starting point is 00:18:53 But obviously, anything that's actively burning, like throwing a cigarette on the ground, that kind of stuff, not advised at all for the foreseeable future. as we remain under this burn ban. All right, pollen. This is going to be a problem, so it's dry, but the pollen counts are really high, so there's not really anything to flush it away. We had rain on Friday night. Since then, we've had nothing. And so tree pollen is going to be off the charts as we go throughout this week. Hey, here's something that many kids are out this week, and so you might be planning a trip to the coast. This is Wrightsville Beach. It's 72 degrees there right now. Got folks out there surfing. So if you're heading there tomorrow to the coast, here's a
Starting point is 00:19:31 beach forecast for you. Tipters will be in the 70s and we'll have a lot of sun, but just keep in mind the water itself is still very cold this time of the year. All right, your first alert, seven-day forecast, very warm all the way through Easter weekend. Looking good on Good Friday, 82 degrees there, 84 on Saturday, 82 Easter Sunday, warm and breezy. Rain arrives overnight, and that'll linger into the start of next week. Barbara, back to you. All right, Cruz, thank you. And we want to invite you to join us for a very important cause next month, Thousands will hit the streets in Raleigh for the annual ALS walk. Registration is now open for anyone who wants to join the ABC 11 Stogner Strong team
Starting point is 00:20:10 in honor of longtime ABC 11 anchor Larry Stogner, who he lost to Lou Gehrig's disease. The ALS walk is Saturday, April 25th at Halifax Mall. More eyewitness news continues right after this. Time now for some news you can use. The maker of popular GLP1 drugs Zepfound and Manjaro could soon be selling drugs discovered by AI. Eli Lilly announces a partnership with Ensilico for the oral drugs discovered by Ensilico's artificial intelligence model, pharma.a.I.I.I.I.L. The companies will also work together in research and development. As part of the deal, Eli Lilly will pay in Silico $115 million. Well, this week, the Supreme Court is hearing a case on birthright citizenship.
Starting point is 00:20:58 President Trump wants to end birthright citizenship by executive order. The 14th Amendment states, quote, persons born or naturalized in the U.S. and subject to the jurisdiction thereof are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. The Trump administration argues the jurisdiction part empowers Trump's executive order. And new at four, we're learning South Carolina lawmaker Jim Clyburn will be here in the triangle tomorrow, bringing his book tour to Durham. The book is entitled The First Eight, a personal history of the pioneering black congressman who shaped a nation. Congressman Clyburn has been in the House since 1993. Back in 2024, he was honored with the Presidential Medal of
Starting point is 00:21:35 Freedom. The White House says he's true. transform the lives of millions of Americans and created a freer country. Clyburn will be at the Haighti Heritage Center on Fayville Street from noon until 2 p.m. And that is news you can use. Steve, back to you. Okay, Barbara, as we close out Women's History Month, we're taking a look at women in STEM fields. And according to women in Tech Network, women make up only about 35% of people who work in STEM jobs across the country. That number is even smaller for women of color. But there is a new group here in the Triangle working to change that.
Starting point is 00:22:05 It's called TechBridge Girls. It's a nonprofit celebrating 25 years of efforts across the country, now expanding here in Central North Carolina. Their mission is to introduce indigenous, Latina, and black girls to the world of STEM. And they say programs and activities help young girls feel prepared and also curious and excited about the possibility of going to work in STEM careers. It's proven that more diverse workforces give more diverse ideas. They are more innovative.
Starting point is 00:22:33 There are still very few women in the future. field, especially women of color as well, like the Latinas in STEM is about 2% or and even less for the computational sciences. So, you know, every day I still kind of feel like I may be the one, the only one. So there's a long ways to go. However, I think that I have definitely seen a difference with organizations and like TechBridge girls. Coming up in the next hour on I witness news at 5 o'clock, we'll share how they are making a difference right here in the triangle. Coming up, nearly two years after a ransomware attack, town leaders in Apex are providing an update to the more than 20,000 people who were affected. And Easter is quickly approaching, which means the Durham Rescue mission is getting ready for that big annual Easter giveaway and community dinner as well.
Starting point is 00:23:20 We'll have the details for this year's event coming right up. We are local news. ABC 11 eyewitness news continues now. Well, the town of Apex now says it hopefully is close to closing a chapter on cybersecurity. Yeah, this attack happened in July of 2024. And now we're learning about a brand new problem. Hackers got their hands on the personal data of thousands of people. Elena Athens, live now at Town Hall in Apex to show us what the town is planning to do to try to protect that information. Elena.
Starting point is 00:23:58 Yes, the town is in the process right now of notifying 22,000 residents that their personal information could have been compromised. That comes out to roughly a quarter of Apex's population. Nobody I met today has received that notification so far. However, they have dealt with other issues caused by this cyber attack. Sometimes didn't get a bill for weeks. Linda Mellenbeck remembers back in fall of 2024 when she had problems paying her water bill. Other residents had sticker shock when they saw their water bills double. The town of Apex saying today the spike was caused by an accelerated effort to replace all water meters after the cyber attack.
Starting point is 00:24:39 The town manager also tells me the incident is almost nearly resolved now. As for the data that was stolen, it ultimately ended up being stored in an outside technology company who the town had to partner with the FBI to take legal action against to acquire the data back. Since then, the town has rebuilt an entirely new financial system, and the town manager thinks the resident's data will not make it to the dark web. Mellenbeck says she does feel confident again using the town's financial system to pay bills. They've made it right if they were under billed or overdosed. So I asked the town manager how he can assure residents that this won't happen again.
Starting point is 00:25:17 His response, plus some of the safeguards that are in place right now, we'll have that coming up on new at 530. For now we're live in Apex. Elena, ABC 11, eyewitness news. What a nightmare for so many people. All right, Elena, look forward to your next report. Thank you. Okay, we have a quick look at some other headlines right now in your speed feed.
Starting point is 00:25:32 First, Durham Parkton Rec is looking ahead to the summer season. And this evening, they're holding a job fair, looking. for seasonal help to get the city pools open, the summer camps up and running, and other programming staffed up. They're having a hiring event tonight from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Colton Career and Resource Settner. Organizers say candidates can learn about all the available full-time and part-time and seasonal positions there at Durham Parks and Rec. And Rocky Mount, the DMV opened a new license plate agency. Today it is on Tiffany Boulevard. It'll be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. They'll help you out with your vehicle registration, your title transactions and license
Starting point is 00:26:07 plate renewals. You can also visit for replacement tags, disability plates, and duplicate registration. Also in Rocky Mount, a nonprofit is distributing boxes of food for Easter meals. Volunteers are packing 3,000 food boxes containing a 5 pound bag of chicken, a 3 pound bag of sweet potatoes, as well as carrots and cabbage, all locally grown produce. The boxes will then be distributed to more than 50 organizations in Nash County, Edgecombe County, Halifax County, and also Wake County. That's happening on Thursday from noon until two. And as we look ahead to Easter, the Durham Rescue Mission is getting ready to host its annual community Easter dinner and basket giveaway. That event, as you may know, features grand prize drawings, including a 65-inch TV
Starting point is 00:26:46 Chromebooks and Nintendo Switch consoles. The rescue mission is also giving away a hundred bikes this year. The event, hear the details coming up Friday, April 3rd. It is from noon to two at the Durham rescue mission on East Main Street. And that's the speed feed. Barbara over to you. All right, Steve. Thank you. Well, New at for children at the Boys and Girls Club in Raleigh today, taking part in the sixth annual Kiwanis kickball tournament. Five local branches of the Boys and Girls Club participated in this event. It raises hundreds of dollars every year. All of the proceeds will go back to the organization. Okay, now to March Madness, and everybody's talking about this in the triangle.
Starting point is 00:27:21 A huge upset for Duke basketball fans, both the men's and women's teams ended their NCAA NCAA tournament runs yesterday. Whoa, what a shock. Yeah. Watching that thing, the women, The women falling short against UCLA, 70 to 58, but it is the men's game that shock fans, people still talking about it. Yeah, as you may know, Duke led Yukon for nearly the entire game, up by 19 points at one point. One position, possession away from moving on. Then Yukon hitting that three-pointer from way behind the arc in the final seconds. And just like that, the Duke season was over.
Starting point is 00:27:53 Could not be more disappointed and feeling for our guys at the same time of, you know, just trying to process what happened. I don't have the words. Duke ends the 2025, 2025, 2006 season at 35 and three at second consecutive, 35 win season. A lot to feel good about with the season, but they went so close to moving on to the final four, losing there in the elite eight yesterday. Yeah, and I agree with him. It just you feel for them.
Starting point is 00:28:26 Yeah, no, and I think they're also processing and trying to figure out how they got dismantled. They might be for a while. We're almost 10 degrees warmer than this exact time yesterday, but tomorrow we're going into the 80s and we'll stay there for several days. An extended outlook at the forecast for the rest of the week coming up in just a few minutes.
Starting point is 00:29:14 We have the latest now on time. When West Jet first took flight in 1996, the vibes were a bit different. People thought denim on denim was peak fashion. Inline skates were everywhere, and two out of three women rocked, the Rachel. While those things stayed in the 90s, one thing that hasn't is that fuzzy feeling you get when West Jet welcomes you on board.
Starting point is 00:29:31 Here's to Westjetting since 96. Travel back in time with us and actually travel with us at westjet.com slash 30 years. Tiger Woods in the fallout from his DUI arrest in the neighborhood where he lives in Florida just as he was making a comeback. One legal analyst says those charges against him may not stick. Here's ABC's Hannah Batah with the details. Questions about Tiger Woods' future after the Gulf legend was arrested and charged with DUI. Authorities say Woods was speeding when he crashed and flipped his SUV near. his home on Jupiter Island, Florida. He was not injured and passed a breathalyzer, but police say Woods
Starting point is 00:30:07 refused to let officers take a blood or urine sample. Refusing such a test is a crime in Florida, and legal experts say it could hurt his case. But without that sample, other experts believe the charges against Woods may not stick. They're going to have a very hard time proving DUI with property damage, though, because you have to prove impairment and feel sobriety exercises alone, especially with Typer's background, with his surgeries, with his injuries, with his ailments, and the fact that he just rolled a car and climbed out of the passenger window is going to be an uphill battle for the prosecution. Woods pleaded guilty to reckless driving back in 2017 after a toxicology report revealed multiple pain and sleep medications in his system. Four years later, he was involved in a rollover crash, nearly losing his leg.
Starting point is 00:30:56 He was in the midst of mounting a comeback after taking last year off because of multiple injuries and surgeries. A source telling People magazine, the golfer is frustrated about his state of health, adding he wants to play in major tournaments like the Masters, but needs to get real. Should Woods enter the Masters, a separate source tells people his girlfriend, Vanessa Trump, the ex-wife of Donald Trump Jr. would support his decision. Woods is expected to be arraigned within two to three weeks. if convicted of DUI, he could spend up to six months behind bars. Hannah Batah, ABC News, New York.
Starting point is 00:31:34 Well, now to Artemis II. The crew is preparing for its mission around the moon. Yeah, four astronauts launching on a 10-day, 685,000-mile journey around the moon, venturing deeper into space than ever before. Yeah, it is a crucial step in NASA's multi-billion-dollar project to land humans back on the moon, build a lunar base, and then send future explorers to Mars. The crew is led by Commander Reid Wiseman and it's a history-making crew.
Starting point is 00:32:00 Victor Glover is said to become the first black man to travel into deep space. Young brown boys and girls can look at me and go, hey, he looks like me and he's doing what? And that's great. I love that, but I also hope we are pushing the other direction that one day we don't have to talk about these first, that one day this is just, and I listen to this, that this is the human history. We're doing this because it's a unique opportunity. We are going for all and buy all. This is what NASA embodies. And Christina Cook, with all her local connections, will be the first woman to journey to the moon.
Starting point is 00:32:34 Well, next, and all new at four, breaking records and making history, a local teenager being honored for his performance in a recent game where he broke the record for the most three-pointers in a game. Also coming up here, a major milestone for the North Carolina lottery, celebrating 20 years since they sold the first ticket, how the lottery has led to big improvements in education. The Raleigh and Zebulan native and East Wake High grad is a sophomore at Guilford Tech Community College studying business entrepreneurship and putting in work on the court. I wanted to try to become better and I did and my stats prove it. In a dominant 105 to 68 win over Pitt Community College recently, Rogers was unstoppable, knocking down 17 three-pointers, the most ever in a national junior college game. I actually scored our team's first 20 points. I had 54 points, seven rebounds and two steals.
Starting point is 00:34:34 It was all three. A record-breaking performance that puts him into a league of his own. I felt a little bit off coming into the game. I didn't think my performance was going to be all that great. And then it turned out to be one of my best performances. Rogers says the moment is surreal, but is the result of years of hard work. Now, the phone is ringing with interest from four-year programs across the country and a few dream schools at the top of his list. Big on NC State and really Chapel Hill.
Starting point is 00:35:00 From local hardwood to national spotlight, Rogers is a name you'll want to remember. Keep your eye on me and watch my journey. and then you'll see how far I'm gonna get. The mom couldn't believe her eyes saying, apparently I have a Djanga prodigy. The video has gained more than 13 million views. Amazing. All right. Well, now to a special moment for a veteran honored during opening day for the Baltimore Orioles. 109-year-old Arthur Green throughout the first pitch for the Orioles. He is a longtime Baltimore resident, veteran of World War II. in the Korean War, green previously through a ceremonial first pitch at the age of 1006, and the best part is signed by players before he hit the mound for a big pitch. And now to a viral event called Pints and Ponytails, turning dads into hairstylists.
Starting point is 00:36:26 A group of dads came together at a London pub to learn how to braid their daughter's hair. They learned a variety of hairstyles from the stylist. The event was organized by two men who run the podcast, The Secret Life of Dads. They say while learning to braid or style hair is the entry point, the purpose is to create space for fathers to connect with their daughters and with each other in a meaningful way. And that is real news. Steve, back to you. Okay, Barbara New at 4, celebrating 20 years of wins here in North Carolina. Today actually marks 20 years since the first lottery ticket was sold here in North Carolina. Since 2006, the North Carolina Education Lottery has raised more than $12 billion.
Starting point is 00:37:04 That money helps fund educational opportunities across the state. The lottery commission says more than $4 billion went to school construction projects, $458 million in need-based grants awarded to build new schools. $3 billion funded school support staff salaries and $800 million funded more than 1.3 million college scholarships and grant awards. That's what happens when we buy the lottery tickets. That's how they hand out all that money. That's right.
Starting point is 00:37:29 All right. Uyrologist Cruz. Medina is here. We're looking toward Easter this week. It's warm. It is dry. And the pollen is everywhere. slushed out and we need a little bit of irrigation.
Starting point is 00:37:40 Yeah, it looks like we're not going to get any widespread rain chances until Easter night into early next week. So for folks trying to keep the grass green, it looks like they're going to be running the sprinklers throughout this week. But I can tell you over the next three days, we will at least see the moisture content in the air increasing. So that's good news for, you know, the statewide burn band that we have. That's elevated fire conditions, by the way.
Starting point is 00:38:02 So the more muggy it is, I think the more that helps us out in these situations. Nonetheless, it's going to be very warm as we start off the month of April, 85 degrees for the first, and then staying pretty warm as we go into Thursday as well. I'll take you outside. This is RDU. And from there, it's 80s all the way through Easter. So we won't get another cool. down until early next week. Once again, showers late in the day on Sunday. That'll linger
Starting point is 00:38:40 overnight and into early next Monday. Steve, back to you. Okay, Cruz, thanks. Starting point is 00:39:18 It's been a week now since Air Canada plane collided with an emergency vehicle at LaGuardia Airport in New York that claimed the lives of two pilots. And today, one of the passengers on that plane sharing her experience during those really frightening moments. It felt like I was thrown out of my seat forward and pushed right back into my seat. My seat belt. What could you hear? Just screaming, panic. And after it happened, we all thought we were dead. So it was like a couple of seconds of silence.
Starting point is 00:39:49 And everyone's asking each other if they're okay. Immediately after the collision happened, people were bleeding, nose bleeding, confusion. You could see all of that around you. I could see that all around me. The gentleman that was sitting on the right side, also the exit door, he was immediately bleeding. His forehead was just spilling out blood. I turned to the other side of me. People are bleeding from their nose.
Starting point is 00:40:14 People have black eyes, knots on their head. You're a nurse. Correct. But you're also at this time a passenger experiencing everyone's worst night and they're taking a flight. Yes. So when that happened, I was waiting for direct. from the flight crew, not realizing that the pilots had passed away and the flight attendant had been ejected. Because at the beginning of the flight, she asked me, can you, are you willing to open the emergency?
Starting point is 00:40:40 Right, they asked you those questions about the emergency. And I said yes, not knowing that in like 55 minutes I would actually have to use it. She showed me how to do it and then I fell asleep. So it was at that moment when we got no direction, people on the plane are, we have to get out of here, we have to get out. We didn't know if the plane was going to explode. We need to be let out. So I immediately just pulled the emergency exit. And the woman next to me, her name is Rachel.
Starting point is 00:41:04 She helped me with the door. The door was pretty heavy. We moved it out the way. That's the emergency exit there. As they were taking you all away, did you look back? I did. I looked back. And I thanked God that I survived something so tragic.
Starting point is 00:41:24 And you can watch the Tamerun Hall show weekdays at 2 p.m. right here on ABC 11. I witness news continues after this break. Here's tonight's ABC Primetime Preview.
