Ahead here on Iwood News at 4 o'clock, we're following two big breaking stories at this hour.
First, a Wake County Sheriff's Deputy is in the hospital this afternoon.
After getting hit by a car, our breaking news crew is on the scene right now with more on this ongoing investigation.
UNC basketball star Caleb Wilson is out for the rest of the season after breaking his thumb or breaking down what this means for the tar heels ahead of March Madness.
And in this week's North Carolina Made, we are introducing you to a husband and wife team who decided to combine their hobbies to
create a successful local business.
I Witness News at 4 starts right now.
Right now, live coverage from your local news leader,
keeping you connected to your community,
and your first alert forecast.
Here's what's happening where you live.
This is ABC 11, I Witness News.
Right now and for record setting heat,
the triangle gets a taste of spring today
as temperatures reach the 80s.
People all across the viewing area,
taking advantage of this warmth and the warmth
and the sunshine. Thank you for joining us for your news at four. I'm Barbara Gibbs. I'm Amber
Repenta. Happy Friday. It is a warm start to the weekend. Tempts reaching record warm today, as Barbara
said, and the late spring-like temps are expected to stick around. Let's send things over to
meteorologist, Preet Medina. So more warm weather on the way, Cruz. Yes, absolutely. We will stay
very near 80 degrees as we go into this weekend, although there are some rain chances that eventually
knock those tipters down just a bit. But let's circle back to this afternoon because it's been very
outside. At last check, we had hit 84. This is an unofficial temperature, by the way. We'll wait for the
official report for the National Weather Service later today, but the record only 82, and that was
set back in 1967. So it is very, very warm for this time of the year, over 20 degrees above average.
But hey, for your evening drive, that means you could ride windows down if you want to.
Tipters will be in the 70s all through this evening. Great for outdoor plans too.
You want to get out, take a walk, take your dogs out. All of those things are great ideas for tonight.
we go into the late night hours, tipters only drop into the lower 60s. So because it stays so warm and we have at least some clearing around, there could be some areas of fog that develop into tomorrow morning. So if you're going to be out and about early on Saturday, just keep that in mind. That fog should burn off by mid-morning in areas that do see it. We jump into the 70s quickly and then reaching a high around 80 degrees tomorrow in Raleigh. There's a spotty shower chance that's mainly going to come around midday. Most areas managed to stay dry and you can see it all across the board. It's going to be warm here in Central North Carolina tomorrow.
So tomorrow is the better day of the weekend days. Sunday does feature a rain chance.
We'll be tracking that out with First Alert Predictor coming up in your seven-day forecast.
Amber, back to you.
All right. See you soon with more. Cruz. Thanks.
And breaking now at 4, Away County Deputy rushed to the hospital after being hit by a car.
That's right. It happened this afternoon on Jones Salis Road near Integrity Drive.
That's right off I-40 south of downtown Raleigh.
Jemise Price is live for us at the scene.
Jemise, tell us what you're learning about this investigation and what may have led to this being hit.
Barbara, we're learning from an employee at the Sheets gas station that this may have started as an altercation inside the gas station and spilling out here on the streets.
And I want to give you guys a closer look, bring you in just a little bit because this investigation still unfolding at this hour right here at the corner of generosity and Jones Sausage Road right outside the Sheets gas station.
CCBI is out here as well.
You can see Wake County, a sheriff deputies as well as Raleigh Police.
But I want to take your attention right here to those two cars.
You see the white car, that white pickup truck.
We were able to speak with the driver of that white pickup truck,
and they told us that the suspect actually hit their car as well.
So a lot of moving pieces out here at this hour,
but we do know that a Wake County Sheriff's deputy was hit by a car,
and we're still trying to get information on that deputies condition,
how he's doing at this hour.
Of course, once we get more information on exactly what unfolded, of course, we're going to share it with you.
For now, Will Ivan Gardner?
Jemis Price, ABC 11, eyewitness news.
All right, that investigation just getting underway.
Jemise, we know you'll continue to question folks on the scene and we'll check back in.
Thank you.
We're also following breaking news out of Orange County this afternoon.
A man hunt is underway for a man accused of deadly stabbing in Hillsborough.
The sheriff's office says a first-degree murder charge has been obtained for 53-year-old Earl D. Matthew, Jared,
Volkimer. Investigator say he's already allegedly stabbed 54-year-old Paula Floyd to death at his home this morning and then fled.
Deputies say Volkmer left the home in Wingate community and has not been found yet.
He may be driving a dark-colored Ford super duty with North Carolina tags.
He should be considered armed and dangerous.
We'll have more information on this story as we get it.
And now to the war with Iran as we near a week.
Israel and the U.S. continue their attacks on Iran and their proxy groups in the region.
And it comes as countries across the Middle East, try to intercept Iranian counterstrikes.
So here's the latest developments at this hour.
The State Department says that 24,000 Americans have now safely returned from the Middle East.
The UAE has intercepted over 100 or 1,000 drone missiles today.
And President Donald Trump says no deal with Iran except under unconditional surrender.
Now this comes as concern over how the conflict in the Middle East will impact us here at home.
Steve Daniels is in the breaking news center with the latest development.
Steve.
Hi, Barbara and Amber, the American military attack on Iran is creating a lot of concern and also uncertainty in our military community, especially for families based at Fort Bragg.
As we know, soldiers at Fort Bragg are very often among the first to respond to these kinds of international conflicts.
Sources at Fort Bragg till eyewitness news, the 82nd Airborne is ramping up readiness at Fort Bragg right now.
Soldiers are going through what is called the SRP, also known as the soldier readiness packet process,
which includes updating their shots and their wills and their next-of-contact information.
Soldiers with a specialized skill set are at Fort Bragg right now, and special forces soldiers are also on a heightened state of readiness,
making sure equipment is ready to get out the door at a moment's notice.
And it comes as ABC News is reporting, the Army abruptly canceled a major training exercise for the 82nd Airborne Headquarters Element.
That's the staff responsible for overseeing operations and logistics, administration, and deployments.
The headquarters unit is made up of 250 soldiers, and it serves as the command and control nerve center for the entire division, making it a requirement for any large-scale deployment.
But all three officials with ABC News and sources we spoke with here at ABC 11 stress there are no current orders in place or planned mission to send the 82nd Airborne to the Middle East.
And in the Middle East today, strikes are intensifying, and American intelligence officials say they believe Russia,
is now helping Iran by providing the location of American troops, aircraft, and ships in the region.
Today the White House was pressed on President Trump's latest social media post demanding an unconditional surrender from Iran.
What the president means is that when he, as commander-in-chief of the U.S. armed forces,
determines that Iran no longer poses a threat to the United States of America,
and the goals of Operation Epic Fury has been fully realized.
Then Iran will essentially be in a place of unconditional surrender.
And President Trump is also demanding he be part of choosing Iran's next Supreme Leader.
We also know the bodies of the six American service members killed in the attacks in Kuwait
are expected to arrive tomorrow at Dover Air Force Base, and President Trump says he plans to attend that ceremony.
Amber.
All right, Steve, thank you for the very latest there.
The war with Iran is also being felt by drivers at the gas pump, of course.
According to AAA, the national average is now $3.32 a gallon.
That's the highest it's been in either of President Donald Trump's two terms.
It's also notably higher than election day in 2024 when the average was $3.10.
Lowering gas prices was a key promise of Trump's presidential campaign.
And a gallon of gas, though, is still well below its record high of $5.2.
Though that happened under former President Joe Biden in 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine.
And you can stay up to date with the latest gas prices and trends.
With the price tracker tool on our website, just go to ABC11.com slash price tracker.
Well, right now, at 4, reaction continues to pour in after today's jobs report,
which showed an unexpected job loss and an increase in unemployment.
Michael Perchick joins us live in Raleigh.
Michael, good afternoon.
He spoke with an economist breaking down the data for us.
Yeah, Amber Barber, several sectors seeing job losses in this latest report,
leading to that national unemployment figure to slightly tick up.
A surprising and disappointing job support, sending stocks spiraling Friday.
Labor markets are weak, and in particular if you are currently unemployed and looking for a job,
this is not a great time to be looking for work.
Those losses led by the health care sector, which shed 28,000 jobs.
Other industries seeing decreases include information, transportation and warehousing, and the federal government.
In total, the economy lost 92,000 jobs.
It capped off a disjointed week in the immediate aftermath of the U.S. military operation targeting the Iranian regime,
which has caused oil prices to spike.
It's a bad combination. These are both negatives, and they're negatives that really pair poorly.
The Trump administration responding to the job support. In a statement, U.S. Secretary of Labor,
Lori Chavez-Darremar citing strikes in bad winter weather in dragging down non-farm employment.
Writing in part, President Trump has successfully reignited wage growth, which continued to accelerate in February,
rising 3.8% year-over-a-year. Factory workers' wages, in particular, have improved from an $830 loss to an impressive $2400,
under the Trump administration.
Now, affordability certainly will be a key topic
as we head into those November's midterm.
Coming up at 5 o'clock,
we'll hear from Congressman Valley Fushi,
fresh off her win in Tuesday night's primary,
what she's hearing from voters
and the issues of affordability.
On Michael Pertschick, ABC 11, I-Witness News.
Yeah, it is a big issue with voters.
We'll see you in an hour with more on that.
Michael, thanks.
We're following more breaking news this afternoon,
just in. UNC Basketball Star Forward,
Caleb Wilson is now out for the rest of the season after a new injury while trying to rejoin the lineup.
Wilson fractured his hand last month during UNC's game against Miami.
Wilson is a major part of the Tar Heel's success, putting up 17-20-point performances, setting UNC freshman records.
Trayvon Miles joins us now with more on this developing news.
Trey, good afternoon to you.
What does this mean for the Tar Heels, especially ahead of March Madness?
Yeah, Barbara, brutal news and honestly, really just awful timing for both Caleb Wilson and UNC with the biggest part of their
season just about to get underway.
You know, from the very first game of the year, we had a feeling this guy might be special,
and it turned into something very special.
Very early in the season, he began to garner national attention.
At one point, he led the nation in dunks.
Now, he did break a bone in his left hand in early February against Miami,
and a day after head coach Hubert Davis told us at the presser that he was progressing,
he breaks his right hand dunking at practice yesterday.
yesterday. We had not seen him on the court since February 10th at that game at Miami.
At that point, UNC said that he was out indefinitely. And Williams, Wilson himself promised a return.
Just last Saturday, head coach Huber Davis confirmed he returned to practice and was doing individual work.
Yesterday, we talked to coach Davis before practice. He confirmed that Wilson was progressing and would do more at that practice.
and a few hours after that, the young man breaks his hand dunking at said practice.
Obviously, a devastating injury not only for Caleb Wilson, but the fortunes of the University of North Carolina as March Madness approaches.
Of course, they got that big game coming up tomorrow.
Barbara will have to see what ends up happening here with Wilson and the Tar Hills.
Wow, devastating, heartbreaking, Trayvon.
We know you'll be all over it.
Thank you so much.
Well, that key injury for the Tar Heels comes on the eve of tomorrow.
tomorrow's second Tobacco Road showdown of the season. Duke hosting UNC at Cameron Indoor and Durham.
This is part two after an instant classic at the Dean Dome last month. The Duke men's basketball team
already clenching the ACC regular season title and is now hoping for a win over Carolina.
But the 17th ranked Tar Heels also want that victory to ball tomorrow night at 630.
And as we are looking ahead to the game between Duke and UNC ESPN game day setting up shop in Durham.
Our crew stopped by Cameron Indoor. Today, where the show,
bus is already parked out front. Tomorrow's show will feature highly anticipated second
face off of the season. Boy, what a game. Still head here at 4 o'clock remembering Reverend Jesse
Jackson. We have a live report from Chicago as funeral services for the civil rights leader are
underway right now. Plus the big names that took the stage in his honor. Plus Mexico travel
concerns will tell you what you need to know if you're headed to that country anytime soon.
All right, it's time for First Alert traffic.
This is a live look at I-40 and Airport Boulevard.
These eastbound lanes seem to have some kind of slowdown.
So if you're heading toward aviation Parkway, just a heads up,
you might encounter that on your way through Raleigh.
All right, so as we head to break,
here are your traffic hotspots brought to you by the First Alert Weather Team.
The ABC 11 First Alert forecast team is working to keep you safe.
Oneies across the region.
Some cloud cover starting to build.
That rain is going to push on through.
Cold air coming in.
The first alert forecast team.
Only on ABC 11, I Witness News.
I witness news.
We are local news weeknights four to six 30 and 11.
And we are back now.
We have a live look at the public funeral underway for civil rights icon,
the Reverend Jesse Jackson and Chicago.
Among those in attendance, former President Bill Clinton,
former President Barack Obama, former President Joe Biden,
also former Vice President Kamala Harris,
multiple Grammy winners also there.
I know the former vice president also speaking right now.
As you can see, if we show that live picture,
thousands of people coming together to pay their respects for Jackson.
Let's check in with ABC's Karen Jordan in Chicago now
with a look at today's final farewell to Jackson.
Karen, thousands in attendance today.
Yes, definitely Barbara and Amber.
You know, the feeling here today is not of sadness,
but of joy for Reverend Jesse Jackson's life
and his legacy and his career.
his wife Jacqueline making it clear that today is a celebration.
The House of Hope Mega Church on Chicago's Southside
filled to capacity today as the country bids farewell
to the late Reverend Jesse Jackson.
The civil rights leader and former presidential candidate
died last month at the age of 84.
The deal maker for the disenfranchise,
the power broker for the people,
the shadow senator, he would say,
show you love for the Reverend Jackson.
Numerous dignitaries on hand to pay their respects, including Illinois's governor.
Let's follow in his footsteps and be trailblazers and not just pathfinders.
Let's bring justice to a too-off an unjust world.
And three former presidents, including our first black president,
reflecting on Jackson's pursuit for the White House in the 1980s.
The message he sent.
to a 22-year-old child of a single mother with a funny name,
was that maybe there wasn't any place, any room where we didn't belong.
Much of today's service filled with music.
Chicago native Jennifer Hudson among those who perform.
Reverend Jesse Lewis Jackson inspires us to take a harder path.
His voice calls on each of us to be heralded.
of change. How fortunate
we were.
But Jesse Jackson answered that call.
What a great debt
we owe to him.
Now tomorrow a private
celebration will take place with
the family and invited guests at Rainbow
Push headquarters. There will be
musical tributes from Stevie Wonder and
other artists. And Jackson
will be laid to rest at Oak Woods Cemetery
here in Chicago.
Barbara and Amber, back to you.
Thank you so much.
for us in Chicago.
Well, happening now, it is beginning to look like spring.
Juniper-level Botanic Garden.
Open nursery returns to the public this weekend, and the weather is really cooperating.
The popular Raleigh attraction is home to one of the largest and most diverse plant collections
in the world.
A lot of them very rare.
It features 28 acres of more than 30,000 kinds of plants.
Just beautiful.
Weather is great if you're planting, but you do have to be careful.
We still could have some frost, right?
Yeah, I would maybe plant in like little containers,
keep these things inside until we at least get past our average last freeze,
which we know could still take some time.
Tax day maybe usually kind of a good.
Yeah, that's actually a very good rule of thumb.
So I don't think we're done with winter just yet, as you'll see in the seven day.
But for now, you've at least got some very warm weather that you can enjoy for this weekend.
So we were just telling you about some of the things to do locally throughout this weekend.
I know a lot of you are going to be out and about enjoying this night.
Nice weather tomorrow a high around 80 degrees.
Tomorrow is the better of the two weekend days.
Sunday is still very warm and the first half of the day is just fine.
But for the second half of the day, we have showers and even a few storms that are going to move through as a cold front swings into the region.
So while it's dry now and for Saturday, that's when you want to make your plans.
Walking the dog this evening, it's going to be very comfortable outside.
Temptors will stay in the 70s through the duration of this evening.
Very nice sunset as we'll have a few fair weather clouds around.
That kind of helps to enhance the colors of the sun.
So be on the lookout for that.
Otherwise, here's first alert predictor through the rest of tonight.
We'll have some clouds around at times and there could also be some fog that sets up tomorrow morning.
Tipters will be in the 60s starting out.
So already starting very mild and with that southwest wind and eventually the sun breaking through the clouds,
tipters are going to push well into the 70s and in some cases even low 80s across the region.
Now as we go into Sunday, we'll start with fog again in some spots.
Temperatures will be back in the 60s and then for once again the first half of the day, it's fine.
Here's the evening. You can see some showers.
and some embedded storms in the mix as well.
The evening's looking pretty wet, pretty unsettled,
and could even be pretty loud wherever the storm set up shop
throughout the day on Sunday.
So capitalize on tomorrow.
Once again, the only thing really slowing you down from getting outside
is the fog in the morning, and then for the afternoon,
it's very warm, about 20 degrees above average again,
with a high of 80 degrees at RDU as we go into the 3 p.m. hour for tomorrow.
Now here's Sunday's front.
This front is going to take its time departing the region.
So Sunday we expect the scattered showers and storms.
Temperatures will be in the 70s then.
We'll stay in the 70s through Monday, upper 70s, so near 80,
but this boundary could linger right near us.
So it's possible we see another lingering shower, spotty shower pop up sometime throughout the day on Monday.
Most of that rain, once again, it's going to come throughout Sunday.
But it's not going to be a significant rain that's going to flush away all of this pollen.
So keep in mind the trees, the grass, it's waking up this time of the year.
So the pollen count staying high all throughout this weekend.
and into early next week. It's really going to take into the back half of the week for us to finally get some relief.
And obviously, we know that could take a while. So for right now, if you're an allergy sufferer,
just make sure you're taking your meds. And if you're going to be outside this weekend,
make sure you're taking precautions as well. All right, Raleigh, 83. Our record for today was 82.
So we've already surpassed that, waiting for the official record from the National Weather Service,
and we should get that closer to 5 p.m. As we go forward, once again, shower chances both Sunday and Monday,
into early next week.
Here's Tuesday, 82, 84 on Wednesday,
and then our next front arrives Thursday.
That could bring a rain chance.
We fall into the 60s and then eventually the 50s
by the time we're ending out the next work week.
Amber, back to you.
I can't believe it's going to be in the 50s by fright.
My jaw just dropped.
I know.
That just means we've got to take advantage of the warmth while we have it.
Bring us back to normal.
Yep.
All right, Cruz, thanks.

ABC 11 eyewitness news continues now.
And we are back now with the latest on the war with Iran as we near week.
Israel and the U.S. continued their attacks on Iran and their proxy.
groups in the region. So here's the latest developments at this hour. The State Department says
24,000 Americans have now safely returned from the Middle East, and the UAE has intercepted
over 1,000 drone missiles today. And President Donald Trump says that no deal with Iran,
except with unconditional surrender. Back here in the triangle, we are learning more, meantime,
about the Data Center project near the town of Apex. That's been no longer, that's no longer
in the works. That's right. The move comes after pushback from.
community members. Cindy Bay explains why the developer pulled back and what could come next.
Plans for a data center in Apex are on hold after the developer withdrew its application,
but the debate over growth and quality of life continues. Relief is the first thing that comes to mind.
It's been a months long fight for Michelle Hoffner O'Connor who opposed the idea of a data center
near the peak of good living. I think we need regulations. I think there are a lot of conversations
this has created.
The developer, Natali investments,
pause the project town leaders say
could have generated at least $4 million in revenue.
The company withdrew its application
for this farmland in New Hill,
but says it could revisit the project
if the town allows data centers
in its zoning ordinance.
Town leaders are set to meet next week
to consider a one-year moratorium.
This means a temporary pause on new data centers
while rules and community concerns are reviewed.
We get to reframe the conversation now.
We get to really talk this out and discuss not just how, but the ethics, the concerns, and if it's possible.
With the project off the table, the question now is what comes next as the committee.
And now at four, today, Governor Josh Stein, recognizing the contributions of Native Americans in shaping North Carolina.
The governor speaking at the United Tribes of North Carolina's annual unity conference in Raleigh,
reaffirming his commitment to supporting the 130,000 American Indians who call North Carolina home.
There are eight recognized Native American tribes in North Carolina, including the Lumby tribe, which was officially recognized in December.
Also in Raleigh, today a major step for women in recovery.
Today, healing transitions broke ground on a new housing development in Raleigh.
The $14 million project is designed to support women and mothers.
Akila Davis takes us inside today's ceremony.
Today, healing transitions breaking ground on a first of its kind recovery-oriented housing facility for women and their children at the women's campus.
The $14 million property will be a three-story, 30,000 square foot building with 16 apartments along with community rooms and mentoring space.
A total of 42-bed rooms.
For the women in detox, the shelter, and in the recovery program, they will see living proof that you can get a life in recovery.
that is flourishing. Women who have gone through the 12 to 18 month treatment programs say this new
resource will feel a critical housing gap in our community while giving them a chance to rebuild their
lives. It would allow people to stay connected to the place where they're building their recovery
while also creating stability for their family. Ahead of 530, more on the impact these new apartments
will make for women in recovery across the state. In Raleigh, Akela Davis, ABC 11, eyewitness news.
For as Botoxin fillers continue to gain popularity, UNC Chapel Hill is one of the first
universities in the nation to offer an introductory course teaching the next generation
of injectables.
The class is called clinical aesthetic injectables training and it is led by a Boston-based
team of nurse practitioners.
Two lectures are offered on Zoom before students meet on campus for hands-on training.
Organizers say clinicians learn how to inject introductory level neurotoxins and hyluronic acid-based
dermal fillers. They say the field of aesthetics is booming and the goal is to improve safety in the
industry. We stop by one of the classes today to talk with students. I think it's really important
that you're making sure your training is reputable and you're training from multiple people.
You don't want to go off of just what one specific person is saying. So that's why I'm really glad
there's multiple providers here. They're all teaching us something different. And I think that'll
help you be more confident in your practice. Now once students complete the course, they receive a
awarding them hours with the American nurses credentialing center.
Well, still ahead on eyewitnesses at 4, a scam warning for Raleigh residents.
Officials are warning of fraudulent emails that appear to be coming from the city,
how you can protect yourself.

All right, Amber, thank you. Well, it's almost time to spring forward. A reminder that daylight saving time starts this weekend.
That means that you'll need to set that nightstand alarm clock ahead or your phone by one hour this Sunday.
Your phone's going to do it for you. March the 8th at 2 a.m. or you can just watch your smartphone, jump up an hour at that time.
The time change can often impact your sleep and bedtime routine. We talked with one local expert about ways that you can adapt to daylight saving time.
I always start with kind of sleep 101, which is called sleep hygiene.
These are the things in our environment and our behaviors that can hurt or help our sleep.
And so the basics of that are having a great nighttime routine.
It's not just good for kids.
It's good for adults as well.
Keeping things dim, 30 minutes leading up to bed.
Having a set schedule, weekdays and weekends, trying to abide by the same schedule.
Avoiding the things that can worsen our sleep.
So caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, all of those are net negatives when it comes to the quality of our sleep.
Daylight saving time will end Sunday, November the 1st, when clocks will fall back one hour.
A lot of people want this to just end.
I know.
It's one of those.
Not go back and forth.
Yeah, it's hard.
It's also a great time to check your smoke detectors.
That's right.
Maybe change your filters too.
Change your batteries.
Do all the things.
Straight ahead here, 430.
Counting down to spring break.
And as Mexico continues to be a popular destination, the recent violence in the country is some travelers on edge.
why officials say tourists have no reason to worry.
Let's go!
And the ultimate mascot swap.
We'll show you what happened when Duke and UNC students
come face to face with their biggest rival looks on their faces.
All right.
I knew this hour.

Spring break, of course, just around the corner in Mexico is a popular destination.
However, the recent violence in that country has some tourists on edge.
Athens has more from the Mexican consul general who says travelers have nothing to worry about.
The State Department has issued a level two travel advisory right now to Mexico and is encouraging
people to use increased caution. To put that in perspective, other countries such as Italy and the
Dominican Republic are also listed as level two. I met with a Mexican diplomat about what travelers
should expect. There has been a wave of violence in Mexico after the killing of a cartel leader and
it's impacting some spring break vacations. One Raleigh resident,
tells me off-camera, the itinerary for his upcoming cruise will no longer include a stop in
in Porto Vallarta, the cruise line cited safety concerns. I sat down with the Consul General of Mexico
in Raleigh, Doha Albaria, and asked if she could understand why people gearing up for their
trips could have trepidation right now heading to Mexico. I understand the concerns, but American
people must be absolutely calm because everything is safe now. Arroya says there is a planned
strategy against drug trafficking and criminal organizations.
The efforts come, she says, as substantial security investments have been made throughout the
country.
Mexico is hosting the 26 FIFA World Cup, along with the U.S. and Canada.
She says there is now modern surveillance systems and strengthened safety protocols.
We had a problem, but we are trying to solve it.
And it's a solution coordinated in between American and Mexican government.
There are two nonstop flights from Ardu Airport to Mexico.
One is to Cancun and the other to Mexico City.
What a local travel agent is sharing about clients and their book trips to Mexico will have that coming up ahead at 530.
For now in Raleigh, Elena, Athens, ABC 11, eyewitness news.
Elena, thank you.
Now let's take a look at today's top trending stories and real news first.
Ahead of the iconic Duke UNC matchup this weekend.
Fans got a little switcheroo surprise.
In Facebook groups for both schools, students signed up for what they thought would be photos with their own mascot.
That seems simple.
When they arrived, though, they were hilariously greeted by their biggest rival instead.
So Duke students were met by Ramsies while UNC fans came face to face with the Blue Devil.
Don't worry, though.
Everyone got a chance to snap photos with their own school mascots.
But that made for some funny social media videos.
They're all fighting.
The Tobacco Road Showdown tips off Saturday,
at 6.30 at Cameron Indoor in Durham. That's going to be another epic showdown. That made for a good promotional hype video, we call it.
All right, let's head down under to Australia now where one man got creative while tackling some yard work.
You can see him here riding on a hoverboard while trimming his grass.
He appears to be enjoying himself as he glides back and forth on the device with the tools in hand.
That's one way to multitask. And one canine deputy from Ohio.
is in the doghouse. This is Moby with the Lucas County Sheriff's Office accused of the gruesome crime
of shredding a lamb toy. The tongue and cheek investigation led to Moby being the top suspect here
because largely according to the authorities, there were quote zero signs of forced entry.
So it kind of had to be Moby. Officers described the scene as very disturbing with stuffing being
scattered all around the floor. The department believes that it has figured out the motive of the crime.
The squeak toy appears to have been too tempting for Moby to resist. But now,
Now Moby needs a new squeak toy.
Moby one, squeak toy zero.
That's real news, back to you.
Moby's got a cute face.
He's like, what do I do?
All right, well, if you are looking for weekend plans,
how about a movie?
Pixar is back with a brand new film, Hoppers.
It follows a teenage environmental activist
who enters the animal world.
The stars leaning their voices stacked.
Some of them sat down with entertainment reporter
Joel Garjulo.
Take a look.
After years of work, this revolutionary
Technology gives us unprecedented access to the animal world.
Do you guys want to start with the questions that my kids have?
Oh, please.
Hold on a second.
Hold on.
If you could talk to animals, what would you say?
Oh, I would tell them you're adorable.
Worst of all, you're mine.
Yeah.
Do you love about beavers?
What do I love about beavers?
Oh my gosh.
Promos that have come out, like just some of the comments that are like, yes, I love
beavers, I'm so fine, I'm finally getting a movie about beavers.
Beaver fans.
Fans are beaver fans.
So true.
There are no casual, like, yeah, I like beavers, but you like a beaver.
You're vocal about it.
Uh-huh.
I learned that they are a Keystone species.
Keystone species are an animal that you can put in and they will create an entire ecosystem by themselves.
So I think that's pretty amazing.
I want to set up the movie for everybody, but let's do it from your character's perspectives.
Okay.
What would King George say this movie's about?
say this movie's about. What would Mabel say this movie's about?
Trying to stop evil mayor Jerry from building his highway and saving the animals.
It's just beautiful alone to watch. It's just like I keep saying just watch it,
watch it once for the movie and then watch it once just for like the nature of it.
My kids love it. They love Mabel. They have somebody that they can look up to in Mabel now.
So little girls everywhere are going to benefit from that for years to come.
Yes, a round of applause for that as a mom of
two girls. We gotta fight back. It's such a cool thing for mostly young girls because they're so often
told to like sit down and shut up. And this, she doesn't do that at any point ever.
Listen to me. We do not use hopping technology to upset the natural order.
She found the button. Let's just end with one thing you want everybody to know about this movie.
There's something for everyone. Like if you want to laugh, you will. If you want to cry, you will.
If you want to be a little bit spooked, you will be like, you know, it's got everything, truly.
Here for Mabel, everyone.
Give it up for the beavers.
Yes, very much so.
Bam, bam, bam.
Oh my God, you guys are awesome.
I always saw an interview with John Hamm.
You know, he voices one of the characters.
He looks like he had a blast.
I know.
It looked like they had a lot of fun.
I know.
It looks hilarious, doesn't it?
Absolutely.
Well, I'm sure that people are going to be out watching that,
but they're probably going to be outside, too.
It's the best time to do it.
This is not the greatest weekend.
Get outside instead.
Hey, Sunday, there's a range.
chance late in the day. Maybe you'll go in and and watch that at that point. All right, back to today.
We know that we broke a record high today. So 84, the new record. And the old one that was broken was
set back in 1967. So we actually broke it by two degrees today. That's a testament to just how warm it was
across the region. But the warmth isn't over yet. It is going to come to an end eventually.
But you can see all the way through this weekend and early next week, the middle of next week,
still very warm. We could see another day around 84 by next Wednesday. Then that sharp drop off.
We're going to see temperatures in the 60s Thursday and even 50s come as we end out next week.
But for this evening, you've got 70s in the forecast. If you want to dine outside today, that's a great option.
I feel like the bugs aren't really out in full force yet. So you don't have too much slowing you down this evening.
Enjoy the warmth while we have it. We will start off the day tomorrow in the 60s already.
And there could be some fog in the morning. So watch out for that if you're going to be out in about early in the day.
a high around 80 degrees at Rdu expected for tomorrow.
Tomorrow is the pick of the weekend.
By Sunday, we're expecting showers and even some storms late in the day to roll in.
Sunday is also the start of daylight saving time.
And so we'll turn our clocks forward an hour before we go to sleep Saturday night.
And then into Sunday, look at that sunset.
7, 16 p.m.
We will see tipters warming up again into next week.
Once again, that comes to an end toward the back half of the week.
50s in the forecast for next Friday.
So it looks like we're just going to have to make the most of the warm.
while we have it. We've got Steve and Lauren joining us now with what's coming up at five.
Hello. Hello, crews. We're tracking some breaking details in the war with Iran and the potential
impact on our military family. Special forces soldiers at Fort Bragg are on a heightened state of
readiness making sure they can get out the door at a moment's notice. And there's movement in the
82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg. We're tracking very closely for clues about how it may
relate to Iran. And new at five, Raleigh's Second Empire Restaurant is among the nation's top
five best of the best restaurants for fine dining.
We'll tell you why it's getting that recognition.
And in downtown Raleigh tomorrow, there's a free animal adoption event.
I'll have dogs and cats and also things like snakes and lizards if you're in the market for one of those.
Oh my.
What about the Easter Bunny has arrived at Crabtree Valley Mall?
Why you should make an appointment with him.
Also new details on the breaking news in Wake County.
A deputy tries to arrest a guy at a sheet's gas station, but the guy took off crashing into a bunch of cars.
We'll see you for the news at five here in just a few minutes.
All right.
Stephen Lauren, thank you. Coming up, a local husband and wife are proving to be the ultimate dream team.
After the break, we'll show you how the duo combine their hobbies into a successful business.
