Starting point is 00:00:00 Ahead at four new details emerging into the small plane crash in Wake County. We're hearing from a family member of one of the men on board who says that the plane may have been having engine problems. A potential breakthrough and the deadlock between the U.S. and Iran. U.S. sources tell ABC News, American and Iranian negotiators believe they have a draft agreement to extend the ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The big question, will President Trump and the Iranian regime sign off on it? I'm Kristianne Pordero in Washington with what we know coming up. That's ahead. Also, get ready to sound the siren. The Carolina hurricanes are one win away now from their first trip to the Stanley Cup final in 20 years.
Starting point is 00:00:43 And we now know the tentative schedule for the final. Iwoodist News at 4 starts now. Right now, live coverage from your local news leader, keeping you connected to your community and your first alert forecast. Here's what's happening where you live. This is ABC 11 eyewitness news. Right now for some more dry time today to get out and get active, the cyclist taking a ride through downtown Raleigh on this hot Thursday afternoon. If you think this weather's a little warm, sticky, we've got to drop in temperatures on the way.
Starting point is 00:01:19 And the recent rain really seems to be helping some drought levels dropping today from extreme to severe for much of central North Carolina. That is good news, but thanks for joining us. We could use more. Thanks for joining us here Friday News here at 4. I'm Amber Pinto. And I'm Barbara Gibbs. Although the drought conditions are improving, as Amber said,
Starting point is 00:01:37 we're not out of the woods yet. We're still saying a drop in water supply. Chopper 11 over Falls Lake today to show you where we are. The lake pool supply continues to drop. Just this week, Raleigh City leaders report. The current supply pool now stands at 74%. That's a drop of 1% from last week. This as stage one water restrictions remain in a number.
Starting point is 00:01:55 for Raleigh water customers. All right, let's send things over to chief meteorologist Don Schwinnaker who can explain more on these new drought numbers. Hey, Don. Good evening too. Yeah, it's been a wet and humid week, but unfortunately not a giant dent in the drought. Now, here's where we were last. We can see most of the area was under extreme drought. Our best, heaviest rainfall fell down here. So watch what happens. That's the area where it recedes. It's still extreme drought that includes parts of Wake County, severe drought down to the south. We're not seeing any areas of moderate drought, which would be lower. So yes, it made a dent, but we're still in it for a while. And we're going to stay dry for a while, too. Live look on your first alert Doppler net tonight,
Starting point is 00:02:33 scanning the skies were dry around here. We do have some showers that have pushed south of our viewing area. Did have some showers in Bladen County and Southern Samson County, but those are down toward the coast now, Wilmington and Oak Island. A live look into downtown Durham on the camera, mutual tower, sky cams showing 87. officially mostly clouding most of those cumulus clouds working through on a north-northwest wind at 12. Everybody's in the 80s, but those winds are pushing in from the north, and that is going to cool us down tonight and bring in some lower humidity. You've got evening plans maybe headed out to dinner tonight.
Starting point is 00:03:05 We'll drop into the 70s, not until 9 o'clock. We'll be in the 70s through ABC 11 at 11, and then the cooler air starts to settle in tomorrow. We'll talk more about that, plus that lower humidity working back in. That's in your first alert seven-day forecast coming up in just a bit. All right. Thank you, Don. And as we prepare for a change in the temperatures, now's a great time to download the ABC 11 mobile app. It's a great way to stay up to date on current weather conditions. We have new details at four on the small plane crash in Wake County that we first reported as breaking news yesterday. Single engine airplane came down near the Rale East Airport in Nightdale just past the runway. The two people on board suffered non-life-threatening injuries. And the FAA is now investigating the crash. And now we're hearing from a family member of one of the men. on board. That family member is shoving light into what could have caused this crash. Let's go to John Dowding. He's live from Raleigh East Airport in Nightdale. John, you've been on
Starting point is 00:03:57 this since it was breaking yesterday. I know you've learned more. What have you learned? Well, Barbara, Amber, we're learning that plane's engine stopped mid-air before the aircraft hit storage containers, some trees, and then crashed just south of the runway here at Raleigh East Airport. Those details coming from the sister of one of the men who was on board that plane. and now aviation experts are sharing with us the steps pilots should take when something like this would happen. When you're learning to fly small airplanes, especially single-engine airplanes, you're constantly looking for a place to put it down in an emergency situation where you lose power. New insight into what could have happened moments before a single-engine airplane fell from the sky in Eastern Way County Wednesday. Chopper 11 capturing heavy damage to the cockpit and a broken wing on the Rainbow Cheetah XLS kit plane.
Starting point is 00:04:48 show the plane took off from Cox Airfield and Apex with Luis Quijano and John Wellman on board. I witness news hearing from Kehano's sister this morning. She tells us, Wellman flew the plane at the time of the crash and says her brother told her the engine stopped working while in the air, forcing them to make an uncontrolled landing. Aviation experts tell us the first step a pilot should take in this situation is to maintain control of the aircraft. Put it into a glide with whatever altitude you have, a safe way of continuing to fly. the airplane towards someplace. That'll be the second thing is looking around and figuring out where can I put this aircraft down. And then and only then you get started trying to restart the engine. Now we're still waiting for official confirmation from investigators about who was flying the plane right before the crash happened and about what officially caused that crash.
Starting point is 00:05:40 But Kehano's sister telling me earlier today he was in surgery this morning. Now coming up at five, we'll hear more from aviation experts about what federal investigators are going to be looking into when it comes to the investigation into this crash. Live here in Nightdale, I'm John Dowding. ABC 11, eyewitness news. I can't imagine their fear as that engine stalled. All right, John, thank you for that new information. Look forward to seeing you in an hour.
Starting point is 00:06:04 All right, three down. One to go. Carolina Hurricanes won away from their first trip to the Stanley Cup finals in 20 years. The last time the Cains played for a Stanley Cup was in 2006. We were here. We were here. I remember. I'm dating us.
Starting point is 00:06:17 They did win it that year, too. So here's the deal. If the Cains win, game five against Montreal at home tomorrow night, the Stanley Cup final opens next Tuesday in Raleigh. Game two would also be in Raleigh. That would be on Thursday. And then the series would then shift to Las Vegas for games three and four against the Golden Knights, who swept Colorado in the Western Conference final.
Starting point is 00:06:37 Games five and seven, if necessary, would also return to Raleigh. And every game starts at 8 p.m. And where can you find it? It airs right here on ABC 11. We remember it, Amber. We're due. So bring it on home. We are.
Starting point is 00:06:51 All right, now to some other local headlines in your speed feed. First, a gun scare at a Wake County High School. Broughton High School and Raleigh shares today that a gun was found on campus. Just before noon, the school resource officer got a tip about a student with a gun. That student was quickly found with an unloaded gun. State law requires a year suspension on any student in possession of a firearm. No one is hurt. A woman now charged with voluntary manslaughter after police say she shot and killed her boyfriend's son.
Starting point is 00:07:16 Kenley police in Johnson County say 54-year-old Tamiko Sharon was in an argument with 19-year-old Tony Stevens the third. She then allegedly shot the 19-year-old. He was taken to the hospital where he later died. Investigators say Sharon was in a relationship with the victim's father, 42-year-old Tony Stevens, Jr. Police say they also found drugs in the home where the shooting happened. Sharon and Stevens Jr. are now both facing drug charges. The Harnick County Sheriff's Office investigating a shooting that happened at a gas station. Investigators say shots were fired during an argument between two men at the Seminole mark number three off Highway 42 in Lillington.
Starting point is 00:07:51 63-year-old Joseph Patterson was arrested in charge with attempted first-degree murder, two counts of assault and two counts of discharging a weapon into an occupied vehicle. He is being held without bond. And that is your speed feet. Amber back to here. Barbara, we now turn to the war with Iran. U.S. and Iranian negotiators believe they have a draft agreement for a short-term deal, according to U.S. officials familiar with the negotiations. The potential deal needs a crucial sign-off, though, from both countries' leaders. ABC's Christiane Cordero is joining us live now in Washington.
Starting point is 00:08:22 So, Christian, what can you tell us about this potential agreement? Yeah, potential is one of the key words there, Amber. Great to be with you. So two key parts of this potential agreement include extending the current ceasefire and reopening eventually the Strait of Hormuz. Today, another attempt to potentially break the deadlock between the U.S. and Iran, U.S. sources, with knowledge of the negotiations say American and Iranian negotiators agree on a proposal to formally extend the current ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Neither President Trump nor the Iranian regime have signed off on the agreement.
Starting point is 00:08:58 But sources say they believe the plan on the table can win support from both countries. It comes just hours after back and forth airstrikes across the Middle East. The Iranian military released this video claiming to show missile launches. ABC News has not been able to verify. the video. U.S. Central Command says it struck Iranian drones near the Strait of Hormuz last night. Soon after, Kuwait's air defense systems intercepted an Iranian missile. If that wasn't intercepted, I can see that this entire war would have been kicked back off, and we would have gone back into major combat operations.
Starting point is 00:09:31 Even as negotiators work out a ceasefire extension, today both the U.S. and Iran accuse each other of violating the current agreement. Iranian state media read a statement today from its supreme leader, accusing the U.S. of trying to create division to compensate for what it calls failures. If top U.S. and Iranian leaders agree on the new proposed deal, the crucial Strait of Ramos would gradually reopen over the next 60 days, with the U.S. ending its naval blockade there and Iran loosening its grip. Iran insists it has sovereignty over the street, while the Trump administration is adamant the regime will not control the straight long term. Nothing is going to be on the table until we see the Strait of Remus open, and the Iranians agree that they have to turn over the highly enriched uranium and that they can't have a nuclear program. And to that point, one thing that is very much not hashed out in this new proposal is Iran's future nuclear capabilities.
Starting point is 00:10:32 The short-term deal would allow for a 60-day window to negotiate that issue. We're live in Washington. Christiane Pordero. Amber, back to you. All right, Christian, thank you for the latest there. Gas prices fell more than three cents today. The biggest single day dropped since 2008. According to AAA, the national average is now $4.43 a gallon. It has not been that low since May 1st.
Starting point is 00:10:56 Oil prices also dropping in some spots below 90 a gallon, a barrel, oil and gasoline. Futures have also plunged. Here in North Carolina, the average price of gas is $4.7 a gas. In Wake County, it is also $4.7. Drivers in Durham County also paying 10 cents more at $1.17 on average. In Comberley County, the average price of gas is $3.92 a gallon. Still ahead here at 4. The criminal investigation into E. Gene Carroll.
Starting point is 00:11:27 The latest into the investigation is the list of President Trump's adversaries targeted by the Justice Department continues to grow. Plus, we'll take you live to Wake Med Soccer Park, where day two of T and TST is underway. The women getting in on the action today. And it's kind of hot out there for that. Don. It is, but the humidity is on its way down. We'll talk about that coming up. Live look at I-440 and US-64. And you can see, volume is picking up on both sides. As we head to break here, your traffic hotspots, brought to you by your first alert forecast team. The ABC 11 First Alert Forecast Team is working to keep you safe. One is across the region. Some cloud cover starting to build. That rain is going to push on through.
Starting point is 00:12:08 they are coming in. The first alert forecast team. Only on ABC 11, eyewitness news. Eyewitness news. We are local news weeknights four to six 30 and 11. The Justice Department is now targeting one of President Trump's most high-profile accusers. Federal prosecutors launching a criminal investigation into E. Jean Carroll, the former magazine columnist who sued Trump for sexual assault in one. Sources say prosecutors are examining whether Carol lied under oath during testimony and her civil lawsuits against the president. The alleged lie is Carol's claim that she received no outside money to fund her case, but records later showed LinkedIn co-founder and Democratic mega-doner Reid Hoffman had quietly paid some of her legal fees and expenses. Tomorrow, former Attorney General Pambandi will appear before the House Oversight Committee in connection to its Jeffrey Epstein investigation.
Starting point is 00:13:04 lawmakers have been pushing for months to question her about how the Justice Department handled Epstein case files under her leadership. The panel previously subpoenaed Bondi, but once she was ousted, the department argued that she could no longer testify in an official capacity. It is not clear how much the committee will learn in the closed door hearing. Bondi will not be under oath and the interview will not be filmed. She had recently just released that she is battling thyroid cancer. Get ready to sound the siren. The Carolina Hurricanes back in Raleigh after beating the Montreal Canadiens last night
Starting point is 00:13:39 in game for the Eastern Conference final. And the excitement is really building because the Keynes right now, as you probably have heard, are just one more one away from the Stanley Cup final. And now they will have a chance to wrap up that series at home tomorrow night. All right, fingers crossed. Joan 11 over the Lenovo Center
Starting point is 00:13:54 where the latest win was checked. Well, hopefully we'll be checked off. That's where we find Michael Perchick, this afternoon, Michael, a notable change to the exterior there. We love it. That's exactly right. Another win means another warning flag behind me. Now the goal is for five more to hang outside the Lenovo Center, but for the team, their focus solely on tomorrow night's game five. My first jersey. Corbyn Smith proudly showing off her new Jordan Martin of Jersey. The left winger joined the team in 2018 coinciding with what has now become the longest playoff streak in team
Starting point is 00:14:31 history. I definitely think that there's huge excitement because of how they've been performing the last eight seasons. I think Rod Rendemore being our head coach is huge too. He obviously was a part of the Cup in 06, so it's important now that he's our head coach. So yeah, I think it's even more exciting just because of the legacy that we have going. The one thing missing from that run is, of course, the most important of all, a Stanley Cup. Though fans are confident this is the team to get it done. Because they roll all four lines. They have tremendous defensive pairings. Anderson is truly on his game and goal.
Starting point is 00:15:04 They have all of the elements that you have to have in order to have a winning hockey program. They're also home to the loudest house in the NHL, a salad streak that spans back to 2023 and the league's best home record over the past two seasons. You can't come to this area and not fill it. Denise Lingenfelscher is going to tomorrow's game. She says even compared to their championship run today, decades ago, the energy is different. Oh, I think it's magnified.
Starting point is 00:15:30 I think you've watched the canes grow and the family of Keynes grow with the fans. So, you know, I think it's just, it's huge. And coming up at five, we spoke of the fan using his musical talents of pop-bump fans before and after the games. In Raleigh, I'm Michael Purchick, ABC 11, eyewitness news. All right, counting on that win. Thank you so much, Michael. We'll talk to you later. All right, let's head over to Wake Med Soccer Park now, and Carrie Day 2 of TST is now underway.
Starting point is 00:16:02 Today, the women are getting in on the action with round one of the tournament. On the men's side, it's round three of group play. And, of course, fans will have the chance to meet the teams, watch a youth clinic and the soccer home run derby. Our Trayvon Miles will have some live coverage from that competition coming up on eyewitness news at 5. He's having fun stargazing over there, too. Oh, absolutely. Let's got a meteorologist, Don Schwinnaker. We're going to talk about the weather.
Starting point is 00:16:26 We've got so much going on outside. And I have to tell you, it just feels so kind of like I'm not ready for all this stickiness yet, you know? And we've got you covered. Barbara, let's talk mug-eat meter. And you'll notice it goes down. We start to see the dew points going down, humidity going down tomorrow. Even Saturday, there's a slight chance of a sprinkle mainly south. The humidity stays relatively low.
Starting point is 00:16:47 Same thing on Sunday. So great news for TST players in town. Monday, a little bit of a surge in the humidity with some. rain chances and then it drops back off Tuesday into Wednesday live look on first alert Doppler net tonight we're not seeing any showers through the metro we have a couple of showers down to the south and east looking live into Kerry on our camera there as we look up Academy Street 87 degrees mostly cloudy with some cumulus clouds working through winds are calm we'll go from the 80s into the 60s tonight it will be cooler skies will clear out
Starting point is 00:17:19 normal is 61 will be down to 62 so it's pretty typical overnight for the end of May 54 in Roxborough, 55 Roanoke Rapids, 62 in Goldsboro, 59, Smithfield, 63 in Clinton, and 64 in Rayford. Satellite radar composite shows the showers pushing off to the south. This is the frontal boundary trying to push through. That's going to allow that cooler, drier air in tonight. Now we zoom it out, notice this high pressure up here. Skies are clear, and that's what's pushing those showers off and keeping the rain out of here. Your first alert predictor forecast model shows the drier and clear. air moving in overnight. By the time we go on for ABC 11 at 11, we've dropped down into the mid-70s. And as we go through the overnight, we'll see some 60s, even some 50s for a nice start to the day.
Starting point is 00:18:05 Lower humidity is in on Friday, 3.30 in the afternoon. We're talking temperatures in the 70s and 80s. We do see some clouds building back in as we head towards Saturday morning. Saturday could be a little more cloudy. There is a chance of showers, mainly from the triangle south. The boundary kind of sneaks north and Saturday gets shoved back to the south. Better chance for some rain in the sand hills. We'll dry out in the afternoon on Saturday. And then as that pushes off to the south, skies will clear out as we head into Sunday. Sunday's going to be a great end to the weekend.
Starting point is 00:18:36 Surface map shows that front that pushes through. And that's what will dry us out as we go into the 80s tomorrow. Kind of wavers a little bit on Saturday, allowing some of that moisture back in. But eventually we'll push south on Sunday and dry us out. Forecast looks like this for tomorrow. Temperatures across the region in the mid-80s. Lots of sunshine. Humidity will be noticeably lower, though, as we round out your work week. Your first alert, seven-day forecast shows a great night for tailgating tomorrow night, lower humidity.
Starting point is 00:19:03 Cains, hopefully wrapping it up. I didn't even put the other two games on there because who cares. We're going to win it tomorrow night. Saturday, spotty shower, mainly south, 83, Sunday, partly cloudy, 77. We start the month of June on Monday. Tuesday, lower humidity, 81. Wednesday, mostly sunny, 81. and Thursday we're back into the mid-80s under partly cloudy skies. Not seeing any big swings in the temperature. A little cooler, though, as we round out the weekend. Ladies? Not mad about that at all.
Starting point is 00:19:32 Thank you. Well, despite the recent rain that we have seen, dry conditions do continue across Central North Carolina. Dona Quaylan explained how the drought could play up in the upcoming hurricane season. We're heading into this hurricane season under severe to extreme drought conditions. And while we could use that rain... A tropical system could bring other challenges and dangers. We've been talking about where we stand with the drought right now.
Starting point is 00:19:57 And at this point, it would take over 22 inches to make up the drought. But because we have the lack of rainfall, the ground is so dry. So that presents other problems for us potentially. It does. Two big things come to mind for me, at least. One, a heavy rainfall with that ground being so hard, a lot of it's going to run off. And we're not going to see it get absorbed into the ground. And two, those tree root systems in that dry dirt,
Starting point is 00:20:20 are very loose. So we get some tropical storm winds. All of a sudden, we get tropical storm trees coming down. Yeah, you mentioned that runoff. That could lead to some flash flooding. Flooding concerns, of course. And then power outages could extend for days or possibly weeks if those trees come down. The drought causing all kinds of problems you don't think about. All right, Donna Quaylon, thank you. So look for more reporting from our first alert forecast team and our first alert to hurricane season special. It airs this Saturday at 7 p.m. Wherever you watch, eyewitness news. Starting point is 00:23:40 The median salary for a graduate with a bachelor's degree is now $60,000, and that has actually slipped $3,000 from 2023. Graduates telling me it's been harder than ever to secure a full-time position. It's definitely a little bit shaky, definitely a bit unstable in terms of like there's not a lot of opportunities out there. And if they are, they want you to have a multitude of experiences. Many Triangle graduates like Annabelle Rose are struggling to find their footing into days. job market. The New York Federal Reserve calls the landscape challenging. ABC News reports that the unemployment rate for recent college graduates sits at 5.6 percent, which is notably higher than the overall unemployment rate of 4.2.
