Starting point is 00:00:00 Coming up next to four jury selection is now underway in the 2012 murder of UNC Student Faith Hedgepets. We're live in Durham with the latest in this high-profile case and when opening statements could begin. And students speaking out, the calls for more security after fights break out off the field in Raleigh during Friday night's football game. What we're learning about the investigation into the game disruption. Ring bling, the Carolina Hurricanes showing off their diamond-encrusted championship rings. As the Stanley Cup champions get ready for the first game of the season, eyewitness news at 4. next. Right now, live coverage from your local news leader, keeping you connected to your community and your first alert forecast. Here's what's happening where you live. This is ABC 11 I Witness News.
Starting point is 00:00:47 14 years and 21 days since Faith Hedgepeth was found bludgeon to death in her Chapel Hill apartment, the murder trial is finally underway. Iwoods News has been inside the Durham County Courthouse all day as jury selection began in this high profile case. Thanks for joining us this Monday for the news at four. I'm Amber Rupenta. And I'm Lauren Johnson. Barbara has the day off. Faith was the UNC sophomore on September 7th, 2012,
Starting point is 00:01:09 when she was found beaten to death in her off-campus apartment. Authorities determined the 19-year-old had also been raped. It would take nearly 10 years to identify the suspect. In 2021, investigators used genetic genealogy and a DNA match from an unrelated traffic stop to identify and arrest Miguel Salguero Olivares in September, He has pleaded not guilty. Akela Davis is live outside the Durham County Justice Center.
Starting point is 00:01:33 So Akela, bring us up to speed in the developments happening since your last report here at noon. Yeah, Amber, you know, no cameras are allowed in the courtroom as this jury selection process is underway. So far this afternoon, we've heard from five potential jurors, two black women, two black men, and one white woman. I do want to make note that the pool is certainly a diverse group here, a diverse group of people. of all age ranges and backgrounds. This is day one of the trial of Miguel Sargaro Alvarez, who was charged with killing UNC Chapel Hill student Faith Hedgepeth. Potential jurors were brought into the courtroom one at a time, one by one,
Starting point is 00:02:15 and questioned by both the prosecution and defense. They were asked what they knew about the case, whether they had already formed an opinion about the case, and whether they had been following all the recent news coverage of Faith Hedgepeth. The court has not said how many people are in the jewelry pool, but I did see dozens of potential jurors today at the courthouse as they entered the courtroom. Now, two courtrooms are being used to hold potential jurors as they are being questioned because of the jury pool being so large. We know the goal here is to find jurors who will be as fair and as impartial as possible. So, of course, we know jury selection continues.
Starting point is 00:02:57 I'm going to step back inside the courthouse and I'll have more ahead on eyewitness news at five. Back to you. All right. Akela Davis reporting for us. Akela, thank you. And you can find extensive coverage of the Faith Hedgepeth murder investigation right now on ABC11.com, including what happened the night she was killed. Plus, watch the news conference from 2021 announcing that arrest.
Starting point is 00:03:16 New here at four, we are hearing from students following that big disturbance happening here Friday night during a football game between Millbrook and Rollsville. Absolute chaos breaking out. this law enforcement work to break up fight after fight, forcing the stadium to evacuate. Now some students are calling for more security. DeWan Hill Guards live at Milbrook High School with what students are telling him about that night. Dewan? Well, Amber, good afternoon to now.
Starting point is 00:03:41 We were under the understanding, and we're told this by the Wake County Sheriff's Office, that security for Friday night's game was being managed by the Sheriff's Office in conjunction with Wake County Schools. However, I spoke with a number of students today who tell me that they believe There should have been more security here at the game on Friday night, so things wouldn't have gotten out of hand. This video was filmed by a student we spoke with who did not want to be identified from Friday evening's fights at Norfolk High School. It started getting hectic and a lot of people just screaming around and stuff. And then like a fight broke out in like the middle of nowhere.
Starting point is 00:04:16 And then everyone just ran to it just instigating and stuff like that. It was pretty bad. That video, one of at least three separate fights that students say took place during the game. and once referees had the stadium cleared for crowd control. So everybody starts to outburst everywhere. Like it's a stampede, like a bulls. Just everybody going leaving. Other students tell me much of the conversation regarding the fights
Starting point is 00:04:35 have shifted to safety and security in what many saw as one of the season's biggest games. Milbrook versus Roseville under the Friday night lights. I would feel more safe because I wouldn't say like and there's going to be like any more big games like that and like people like from all over the place are going to be coming. But like I just feel like more like security throughout the games.
Starting point is 00:04:54 The White County Sheriff's Office says one of their deputies deployed pepper spray and was exposed. It would not comment any further. You could see him like tearing up a bit too because like kind of got hit with it. And as of this afternoon, we have been told that there have been no arrest and connection to what happened here on Friday. However, I actually had a chance to speak with a crowd control expert. You're going to hear his comments all new for you ahead at five on what he believes should have happened Friday night. And as of right now, still no word on when or if that game from Friday night will be rescheduled. We're live in Raleigh this afternoon. Duane Hogarth,
Starting point is 00:05:30 ABC 11, Iowa News. All right, Duwam, we'll see you in an hour with more. Thank you. Let's turn to the weather now. Beautiful Monday. It is. I woke up this morning. I saw 60s, but then I saw 80s. And I was like, okay, so it's going to get hot again out here. Absolutely, yeah. This is just the start of the warm up. But tomorrow's not going to be too bad. It's really toward the end of the week when we see those big changes. Let's get into the forecast. So we'll talk about this big temperature swing here. So the first alert to 90s on front. Friday. 91, that's compared to the average high of 80. So 11 degrees above average on Friday, feeling more like an early summer day. And then by the time we get to the end of the weekend,
Starting point is 00:06:07 Sunday not only features a rain chance, but also cooler fall-like temperatures in the 70s. So we fall below average by the time the weekend is ending. Today has been slightly above average. Here's a live look from our North Hills sky cam. You can see earlier today, there was a lot of sun. The clouds have started to build into the region right now. It is 80 degrees in the city of of Oak 75 in Roxborough and 80 down in Goldsboro. But you at least get a nice evening despite the cloud cover. Tipters will stay in the 70s for several more hours and then eventually overnight we should see tipters falling down into the 50s for most of Central North Carolina.
Starting point is 00:06:40 The cloud cover is going to persist that will keep tipters not necessarily warm but it'll keep them from tanking tonight into the lower half of the 50s. 59 the low in Raleigh 58 in Goldsboro 56 in Sanford and 56 up in Roxborough. That means you get a nice and comfortable start to your day. on Tuesday. Tipters will stay in the 60s for most of the morning. By noon, we should be in the upper half of the 70s and then afternoon highs should eventually reach into the low to mid 80s depending on your location. Mid 80s down in the sand hills, low 80s for the triangle and actually some upper 70s due to cloud cover in those northern counties for tomorrow. We'll talk a little bit more
Starting point is 00:07:15 about the weekend rain chances coming up in your seven day forecast. Lauren back to you. All right, Cruz. We'll see you then. Thank you. Now of some other local headlines in your speed feed first honoring the life of Brooklyn Carroll. Friends and family of the 10-year girl killed in that tragic boating accident on Harris Lake last year are hosting the inaugural Brooklyn May Carol Invitational at McGregor Downs Country Club and Carrie. The money raised will support safe and sober boating initiatives and promote water safety. It comes about a month after Quentin Kite pled guilty to charges related to Carol's death. Kite was impaired while operating a boat that killed Carol who was swimming with a different group. Raleigh Police investigating
Starting point is 00:07:51 another string of car break-ins shattered glass scattered across the parking lot at the Holiday in on Little Briar Creek Lane. Police say 27 cars were broken into this weekend. Property was stolen from at least one of those vehicles. Today, Meredith College's new police chief was sworn into office. Eva Howard is making history as the first woman to lead the college's police department and security team. Chief Howard has more than 20 years of history and law enforcement. She previously worked for the Durham Public School Safety and Security Division.
Starting point is 00:08:19 She's also worked at NC State. Happening this evening, you'll get a chance to weigh in on major roadwork in Way County. The state DOT inviting the public to learn more on the plans to expand pool road between Barwell and Hodges Road stretching the road from two to four lanes and adding a center median. Tonight's meeting is from five until seven at the Barwell Road Community Center. You can view the maps and submit your comments. That is your speed feed, Amber, back to you. All right, Lauren, happening today, another committee meeting as the Kerrytown Council continues to discuss that scathing audit, exposing how the town was spending tax money.
Starting point is 00:08:53 It comes after the state auditor blasted the town for a culture of extraterrestrial. against spending and lack of oversight. This all stems from that investigation in a former town manager, Sean Stiegel, who was found in that report to have used public funds for high-end expenses, and tonight's meeting starts at 515. Right now here at 4,
Starting point is 00:09:10 the countdown is on to the cane season opener tomorrow. Yeah, the Stanley Cup champions will face the Florida Panthers at Lenovo tomorrow. We were there today as the players hit the ice for practice ahead of tomorrow's game. Players sharing with us how they're feeling heading into the season's opener. tough test tomorrow right I mean they're a good team so I'm just kind of excited to get at it
Starting point is 00:09:30 it's it's a brand new season yeah something happened last year that was really cool but it's still kind of the same routine of a new season and a new challenge and I think the guys understand that we got a long road ahead of us and but game one starts tomorrow yes it does in months after winning the Stanley Cup championship the canes are now wearing their championship rings check this out today a ring showcase was held showing off the dazzling piece of hardware entirely in California. The championship ring features nearly 900 individually set stones, including 9.8 carrots of white diamonds and 1.4 carrots of natural red rubies. And check this out. You can, this video here, the cane sharing just the moment that the players first laid their
Starting point is 00:10:13 eyes on all those rings and the bling. It happened last night during a private ring ceremony. The phrase, stress game, appears along the side of the ring. That's honoring Carolina's style of play built on pace, pressure, and constant attack. They're actually really quiet. Speechless. Yeah, I would be too if I see diamonds. Blum like that. All right. Meantime. Today, the Stanley Cup continued making the rounds this morning. Fans lined up at the North Maine Athletic Complex in Holly Springs to catch a glimpse of that trophy. After that event, the Cup headed over to Apex, where fans gathered at Pleasant Park for their chance to take pictures and to even touch the Stanley Cup. You can look for team coverage tomorrow. As we return to the Lenovo Center for the Canes
Starting point is 00:10:55 to defend the cup. Amber will be there with Don Schwinnaker, Trayvon Miles, and Kate Rodgerson. Plus, we'll have live reports from Elena Athens and Tom George. Next year, at 4 o'clock, we're all paying more at the gas pumps and one local nonprofit working to keep its wheels on the roads. Coming up next year at 4, we're hearing from Meals on Wheels volunteers who are determined to keep making those crucial deliveries despite the rising costs to fill up. Cruz? Oh, sorry, Cruz. You're coming up after this. A live look at the work happening right now to repair NC12 and we have an update on the timeline to reopen the coastal highway on the outer banks now you could see why I was confused Cruz it looked like a weather
Starting point is 00:11:35 shot eyewitness news we are local news weeknights 4 to 630 and 11 right now at four average gas prices across central North Carolina remain above $4 a gallon yeah the pain at the pump is straining budgets for many families the average price in North Carolina is now $4.14 drivers in Durham are paying more than drivers in Raleigh and Fayetteville. And as we've reported before the rising prices are taking quite a toll on farmers and truck drivers who depend on diesel fuel. But today we're learning the impact the gas prices are having on programs like Meals on Wheels. Elena Athens is live in Raleigh with how that essential program is navigating the gas prices. Hi, Elena.
Starting point is 00:12:24 Good afternoon to you both. Yeah, AAA Carolina says the statewide average right now for a gallon of regulars actually $0.33 cents below. the nationwide average. However, we are paying roughly $1.25 more than this time last year. So some nonprofits are concerned how those gas prices are impacting their daily operations. And this is today we're having Brunswick's stew. Meals on Wheels, Wake County serves about 1,500 meals every day in Wake County, and it's all mostly possible through volunteers who will come to a location, grab a cooler full of food, and pre-made hot meals.
Starting point is 00:13:02 then take them to senior citizens. Back in May, the nonprofit said the number of volunteers waned and officials questioned if it was because of rising gas prices. We're being told, fortunately, the number is now up, but there is still concern. Kind of holding my breath, hoping that people will still know that the community needs us. Maryam Plum has been a Meals-on-Wills volunteer for about 20 years,
Starting point is 00:13:24 and during that period has certainly seen fuel prices fluctuate. She says it's been hard recently, seeing the cost steadily climb at the gas pump. You know, it's kind of heartbreaking, but for me, it's worth it for this service. All right, so they are continuing on with the mission despite what these prices are at the pump ahead at 5 o'clock. The generous donation that just came in in time to help those volunteers will have more on that ahead. For now, we're live in Raleigh, Elena, Athens, ABC 11, eyewitness news. Well, Elena, we're getting a history lesson on Brunswick Stew here in the studio,
Starting point is 00:13:57 so you've got some conversations started about food at almost dinner time. Elena, thank you. Gas prices have been elevated since the war with Iran started up about $1.48 per gallon, says Gas Buddy. And as ABC's Andrew Jimbert reports, the war contributed to the higher prices is no closer to being over. As the war with Iran enters its eighth month, the national average price of gas now around $4.42 a gallon and diesel at $6.44, according to Gas Buddy. But analysts say prices may tick down a little this week as states saw them spike last week. And a lot of those states engage in what we call price cycling, where once prices make a big jump up, they tend to see some relief. President Trump, again, arguing prices will soon fall.
Starting point is 00:14:40 Iran will never have a nuclear weapon. We're going to win that war very soon. That'll be over. And the gas prices will come tumbling down. But the president saying he rejected a deal offered by Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume nuclear talks if the U.S. agreed to the terms of this summer's short-lived ceasefire or memorandum of understanding, including living. lifting its blockade of Iranian ports.
Starting point is 00:15:02 The MOU has things that are simply, in my opinion, not going to be approved by any U.S. administration, including $300 billion in reparations to Iran. Trump says he expects more talks with Iran this week, but he's also leaving open the possibility that the U.S. could resume bombing. Iran's foreign minister says they are prepared for whatever outcome. We stand firm in the face of any aggression against us, even it comes to a doomsday war.
Starting point is 00:15:28 Well, at the same time, we are ready for diplomacy. Today, a U.S. official confirming eight Marines were recently injured in an Iranian attack on a ship in the Strait of Hormuz. The officials saying the injuries were not significant. The president says he's considering banning diesel exports, but his own energy secretary has dismissed the idea, while experts fear a ban could backfire driving up prices here at home. Andrew Dembert, ABC News, New York. Right now, at 4, a live look at. NC 12 on the outer banks, the NCDOT continuing to work to reopen the road after that
Starting point is 00:16:03 nor'easter breach dunes causing overwash on P. Island today. The DOT reported it expects the reopen that coastal highway to northbound traffic by Wednesday morning. The section of highway between the Bass Knight Bridge and Rodanthi has been closed since Thursday. Work is underway to recreate a protective sand dune along the highway while removing asphalt and grading for a one lane on-site detour. And there is good news from the North Carolina Coast. Highway 12 has reopened on Okrakoak Island. Ferry service to Hatteras is resuming on a limited schedule, and emergency fairies continue from Rodanthi. All right around here, what a beautiful, I hope you got outside today. I know I did for a little while, but then I started sneezing,
Starting point is 00:16:42 so I can't back. That we talked about that. The pollen. The weed is high. It's high right now, and that's getting a lot of people. Ambrose just telling me about it. But at least we had some sunshine today. Yeah, we did. And that system impacted us. We saw some clouds from it this weekend. And of course, we're going to see some going forward as well. But as we go through tomorrow, expected to be pleasant. Even with some cloud cover around, tipters will only be in the low to mid-80s. By the time we get into the middle of the week, that's where we're going to be feeling more like June than the start of October. So Thursday, the first official day of the new month, and we could have highs near 90 degrees.
Starting point is 00:17:17 Going into this weekend, we take a turn. So temperatures are going to come down. We'll eventually see some rain entering our area. And of course, the cloud cover comes with it as well. The cloud cover that we're seeing this afternoon still being brought on in part by this nor'easter that we were just showing you did damage to the outer banks and much of the Carolina coast. This has been a relentless storm for parts of the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast, still impacting even parts of New England as we speak, but thankfully in a much weaker state. And this will continue to pull away from us just throwing some clouds in our direction for the next day or so. So through this evening, expected to stay rather pleasant.
Starting point is 00:17:54 We'll have some clouds around, still some breaks of sun in the mix. Tip you're staying in the 70s this evening, so very pleasant for getting out and walking the dog. By tomorrow morning, we should have lows in the 50s starting your day. First alert predictor walks us through tonight. There will be some more of those clouds pivoting around that Northeaster. So again, kind of being thrown in our direction. Our winds will be out of the north starting off today tomorrow. That keeps us a little cooler.
Starting point is 00:18:16 Through the afternoon, we should still be kind of where we should be for this time of the year, maybe within a degree or two above average, but highs in the lower. half of the 80s, a few spots, even upper 70s toward the Virginia border. And those areas will also have thicker clouds around that should thin out a bit as we go into the evening. That sets us up for a more sunny day on Wednesday. Here's a breakdown by region tomorrow of what to expect heading out the door. The coolest spots will be in our northern counties. Temperatures at 8 a.m. still sitting in the upper 50s for areas like Roxburgh, afternoon highs in the 70s there, low 80s in the triangle, mid 80s in the sand hills. And the farther south you go, the more
Starting point is 00:18:52 sunshine you see tomorrow it'll really be from the triangle north where we have the most cloud cover through tomorrow here's the tropics we have a new tropical storm this is tropical storm hannah that formed earlier this afternoon sustained winds right now around 45 miles per hour so it's borderline tropical storm and then we have that tropical depression fade that's still hanging out to our south both of those are expected to kind of stay out in the open seas so we're not expecting that to have an impact here locally on our coast I'll take you outside real quick you can see the cloud cover to roll in there in the city of Oaks. It's 80 degrees right now, 76 in Roxburgh and 79 in Fayetteville. Your first solar, acuether seven-day forecast has tipters rising into the upper 80s, low 90s as we
Starting point is 00:19:34 enter the month of October. By the time we get into the weekend, that's where we'll turn our attention to possible rain chances. Late in the day on Saturday, still low 80s there, but dropping into the 70s on Sunday. Sunday now looking to be a bit wetter. I'm just surprised by that 90 that snuck in there, right there in the middle of it all, right? Snuck right up. Not the October 1st? I know. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:19:57 On the calendar already. Like, okay. Other nature keeps us guessing. Right. Whatever you want to do, girl. All right, Cruz, thank you. All right, we have an update the young soul survivor of a crash in Vance County that claim the lives of his mom, dad, and his sister.
Starting point is 00:20:09 And next to four lights out for birds. We'll tell you what you can do to help migratory birds get to their winter destination safely. It's time now for some news you can use this Monday. The city of Durham is asking residents. to turn off their non-essential outdoor lights for the birds from 11 p.m. until 6 a.m. from now through November the 30th, millions of birds will fly to their wintering grounds with many passing right through Central North Carolina. And because bright artificial building lights and urban sky glow can actually confuse the birds,
Starting point is 00:20:42 pulling them off course into cities they're asking for the lights out for the birds. Charlotte-based Cato Corporation is planning to close 120 stores by the end of its fiscal year. The company operates more than 1,000 women's apparel and accessory stores across 31 states. The company reported net income of $1.1 million in the second quarter down from $6.8 million during the same period a year earlier. Cato did not reveal which locations will close. There are more than 20 Cato locations in Central North Carolina. And Starbucks is taking a cue from its success in South Korea to bring a new drink to the U.S. market. It's called Aerocano and it's coming to U.S. stores tomorrow,
Starting point is 00:21:19 which is National Coffee Day. The drink is essentially an airwipped, iced America. with what Starbucks calls a velvety texture and signature cascading effect. That sounds delicious. That is news you can use, Lauren, over to you. All right, Amber, you can take your beloved pets to Duke University Chapel on Sunday for the annual blessings of the animals. Dog, cats, and other animals can join ministries and the Durham Children's Choir for the worship service.
Starting point is 00:21:42 It will be held on the Duke Chapel quad from 3 p.m. until 3.30, individual blessings will follow. That's very huge. All right, an already hot spot and carry could soon see more development. Yeah, the town council has approved a rezoning request that could bring a mixed use development to NC55 right near McCrimmon Parkway. Coming up here, 4 o'clock, what this could mean for that area and the new reaction we're getting today. And nearly nine years after Peyton Fields was attacked inside her home in Pinter County, left for dead, a murder trial, finally getting underway. And the suspect is the little girl's own uncle.
Starting point is 00:22:15 And Cruz. Time for a check of first alert traffic. This is I-885 at Ellis Road. And this is normally a trouble spot where you would see some back-up. heading into the evening commute. Right now, things are flowing smoothly. Let's check in with some other spots. As we head to break here,

Starting point is 00:23:06 ABC 11 eyewitness news continues now. And this afternoon, we are learning more about a mixed use development that's coming to an already busy area in West Kerry. So last week, the City Council approved a request to rezone three parcels in the 4,400 block of NC55. It's near McCrimmon Parkway, Alston Town Center, and Panther Creek High School. The developer plans to build between 500 to 625 multi-family units there. And new here at 4, Cindy Bay is joining us live. She's in West Kerry taking a closer look at the growth that's happening there. And it's a lot, right, Cindy?
Starting point is 00:23:39 Yeah, that's right, Amber. Earlier this year, Lifetime opened its newest club at Alston Town Center, for example. And in January, another developer filed to rezone property for a mid-rise apartment building. residents say the area is growing fast. A Raleigh developer is moving forward with plans for a mixed use development along this busy corridor. It's a really nice place. Honestly, I can't wait to see what's moving over here. The Kerry Town Council unanimously approved rezoning three parcels across from Alston Town Center on Highway 55.
Starting point is 00:24:16 The plan calls for hundreds of homes, a car wash, office space, and general commercial development on the mostly forested property. ABC 11 reached out to Capital Commercial LLC. They declined to comment. People who come to the area say they welcome more options, but worry growth could change Carrie's charm. It's nice to have options, I guess, like when it comes to grocery shopping or gyms or restaurants. It's a lot of people, it's a lot of congestion, it's a lot of traffic.
Starting point is 00:24:47 Now, the developer has made changes to address concerns, including affordability, how the project could shape this part of Carrie will be ahead on eyewitness news at 530 in Carrie. Cindy Bay. ABC 11 eyewitness news. See at 530, Cindy, thank you. Covering the Carolinas now jury selection underway today in the trial of a man accused in the 2017 death of his five-year-old niece. David Wesley Prevette is accused of killing Peyton Fields who was found unresponsive inside her Pender County home in November 2017. She died three days later. Prevet was identified as a suspect in 2018, was not arrested until 2022.
Starting point is 00:25:27 An autopsy revealed Little Peyton was strangled. Prevette faces charges of first-degree murder, first-degree statutory rape of a child by an adult, and first-degree sex offense with a child by an adult. Bond has been denied for a South Carolina woman charged with attempting to kill her own children. Spartanburg County Sheriff's deputies responded to a welfare check on Saturday where they found Taylor Gossnell's two children injured and home alone. Investigators say Gosnell attacked her children using a knife and a blunt object. Both children are expected to recover.
Starting point is 00:25:57 A 10-year-old boy from Charlotte who was critically injured in a tragic crash in Vance County continues to recover at Duke University Health in Durham. According to a GoFundMe, J-C-C-on-Nye continues to recover from abdomen surgery, and now doctors are focused on his neck injury. Jayceon's mother, father, and seven-year-old sister were killed in a crash on I-85 on September 19th. A GoFundMe for medical and funeral expenses has raised over $130,000. A Fayetteville man is now facing charges for allegedly impersonating an officer. Police say around 3.30 yesterday morning a man dressed as an officer robbed a home on Osceola Drive.
Starting point is 00:26:34 Authorities say he knocked on the door before storming in and then stealing money. No injuries were reported. The suspect is identified as 27-year-old Jaden Boone. And he is now charged with robbery with a deadly weapon, possession of stolen goods, impersonating a law enforcement officer. Investigators say the equipment boon was wearing was stolen from a fable police officer's home while the officer was away on vacation. And outrage is growing after a former Cornell University student filed a lawsuit alleging she was drugged and gang raped by several fraternity members on the university's campus in 2024. No one was charged at the time with the district attorney now says he's looking at whether there is any new evidence that might change that after a new lawsuit was filed.
Starting point is 00:27:14 ABC's Olivia Rubin has new reporting on that case. Today, a New York District Attorney reopening an investigation into disturbing allegations of sexual assault on Cornell University's campus. It's our intention to present the case to the Tompkins County Grand Jury with Jane Doe's cooperation. It comes after a new lawsuit from a former student identified only as Jane Doe suing the Ivy League University and seven fraternity members, alleging she was drugged, sexually assaulted, and gang raped at the Chi Phi fraternity house. in 2024. The lawsuit including this screenshot from a Snapchat group chat claiming the accused frat members encouraged others to join in. The district attorney Matthew Van Houghton saying he wasn't aware of that group chat two years ago. It's disgusting. It's morally despicable. The DA saying his
Starting point is 00:28:07 office did not interview the men and no criminal charges were filed. The DA now explaining that decision, saying it's because the allegations and the new civil complaint are quote, dramatically different than Jane Doe's statement to police in 2024. The DA now releasing a summary of that statement, which says Jane Doe described her intoxication level as a, quote, five or six out of ten, saying she was, quote, pretty okay with having this threesome.
