Key issues such as immigration enforcement
Starting point is 00:03:42 could play a role in spurring turnout. Folks are pretty interested in what's going on in government. We did have a shutdown not that long ago. Time now 508 on your Thursday morning and a major rebuke on President Trump's trade policy from his own party. Plus what do you know about the plans for a new high rise in downtown Raleigh? Temperatures mainly 30s and 40s across the region from Virginia across our state, Myrtle Beach 41. Boone is our coldest spot in the state right now, down to 29 degrees. Starting point is 00:09:12 I'll have more on that when I come back. Joel. All right. See you then. Quaylin, thank you. Happening now, changing skyline. A new high rise could be in the worst for downtown Raleigh. The Triangle Business Journal reporting Tuscany Construction Group filed applications with the city to rezone two lots in Glenwood South.
Starting point is 00:09:27 The properties are on the corner of Glenwood Avenue and West Jones Street. according to the rezoning request Tuscany. Once the land to change from office mixed use up to three stories to downtown mixed juice up to 20 stories tall. A local coffee shop is getting national recognition. A steamed coffee is a nonprofit coffee house offering employment opportunities to people with intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities. And they've got a cool name. Yeah. The Trader Joe's products that some on social media call super dupes for expensive brands. We'll take a look at how they stack up. We are local news. ABC 11 eyewitness news continues now.
Starting point is 00:10:24 I own the economy at 515 and a real. rare rebuke for President Trump from his own party after several House Republicans joined Democrats to vote to terminate his tariffs on Canada. ABC's Nicole DeAntonio in Washington with the latest. On this vote, the aza 218 and the Nayser 213. The bill has passed. This morning, a major rebuke of President Trump's trade policy. The GOP-led House passing a resolution to rescind the president's tariffs on Canada. Six Republicans joining nearly every Democrat to pass the measure, despite Speaker Mike Johnson's effort to block it. Trump warning on social media last night
Starting point is 00:11:03 that any Republican in the House or the Senate that votes against tariffs will seriously suffer the consequences come election time, and that includes primaries. More than 60% of Americans disapprove of these tariffs. They know that the foreign governments don't pay these tariffs.
Starting point is 00:11:21 They know that American families do. Speaker Johnson argues that Congress should not be getting in the way with Trump's tariffs. should be able to conduct his trade policy, which has been very successful. At the same time, a decision is still pending from the Supreme Court on whether the president has exceeded his authority by using emergency statutory powers to impose wide-ranging tariffs. It comes as a new report from the Nonpartisan Tax Foundation shows that tariffs cost the average American household $1,000 more last year.
Starting point is 00:11:51 That number is set to increase to $1,300 this year if all the existing tariffs stay in place. President Trump credits tariffs for bringing in revenue for the federal government. But as we head towards the midterms, the latest polling shows 56% of Americans disapprove of Trump's handling of the economy while 39% approve. And the bill now heads to the Senate where it faces an uncertain future. If it passes, the president will likely veto the legislation. Nicole D. Antonio, ABC News, Washington. On this day in 2018, the official portraits for former President Barack. Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama were unveiled.
Starting point is 00:12:30 The ceremony was held at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and is considered a right of passage for former presidents. The First Ladies shows her long, her in a very long patterned dress while she rests her head on her hand. The former president's portrait shows him sitting in a chair in front of a green foliage. I think it's Gahinda Wiley who did President Obama's portrait and he's featured a lot at the National Museum in Durham. I love his work.
Starting point is 00:12:58 Thanks for that tidbit, Joel. A little tidbit of info. You have any tidbits for it? I do. She's got all kinds of tickets. Let's talk about it. We have some rate in the forecast for the weekend, but not today.
Starting point is 00:13:11 Dry conditions today. Highs in the 50s. It's closer to average 55 is our normal high. 52 tomorrow, so a little bit cooler. We're back to 61 on Saturday, and then some 50s to kick off early next week with 60s returning Tuesday. Here's a live look into downtown Raleigh.
Starting point is 00:13:24 The skies are mainly clear right now. The temperatures ranging from the upper 20s around Goldsboro back towards areas like Siler City, also 30s for Roxborough. 40s right now for the triangle and Fayetteville, 42 degrees. It's not quite breezy right now, but it will turn breezy later today. We'll have those guests from the north approaching 20 miles per hour. 40 degrees at 9 o'clock by that time partly cloudy by noon. We're partly cloudy up to 50 degrees, 54, the temperature at 3 o'clock this afternoon. We'll still have some clouds around for the early part of the night before sky's to clear out and that will allow for temperature
Starting point is 00:13:54 to fall from the 30s into the 20s tomorrow morning. We have that front to the south of us that came through yesterday, high pressure to the west, and that will build over the region today into tomorrow. High temperatures tomorrow again, a little bit lower than this afternoon. We'll be in the low 50s, but skies will be brighter for Friday. That high pressure slides offshore on Saturday, so that's going to lead to that return flow. That's the onshore flow, kicks those temperatures into the 60s, and then we'll be tracking our next system, which will bring us that rainfall on Sunday, some potent rain potential for us Sunday through
Starting point is 00:14:24 Sunday night. Early Monday morning, I think some lingering showers shortly after sunrise. And here, a clear picture of the deficits that we've been suffering unfortunately since not only October, but September. And the drought continues to worsen at this point. We have a severe drought for the area now. And we'll get our next update in today. That could lead to some slightly worse conditions for this week. The temperature on Saturday, 61 degrees, Sunday 53 with rainfall, which will be locally heavy at times. This model, the euro actually presents the rainfall. little bit later in the day on Sunday. So I think we'll have some late morning showers by the afternoon. Expects scattered rain turning more moderate to heavy at times through Sunday afternoon and night.
Starting point is 00:15:04 But some decent totals, one to one and a half inches at least, I think, for the viewing area on Sunday to Sunday night. High temperatures today in the 50s with some clouds arriving later today. Clearing out overnight. Temperatures drop into the mid-20s to around the low 30s. So it will be colder tomorrow morning and colder than average. 52 Friday up to 61 Saturday for Valentine's Day. Sunday, that's so. looking rain arrives high temperature around 53 degrees 40s Sunday night. Monday will dry out for President's Day so it'll end up being a really nice afternoon. Upper 50s for highs. Mid-60s Tuesday near 70 degrees next Wednesday and that trend of near 70 degrees continues to end the week Thursday and Friday. By Saturday we're still in the upper 50s. Weather and traffic together back to you.
Starting point is 00:15:46 Quailan right now the road's looking really good. It's pretty quiet out there. We're not seeing any major issues in Southern Way County. You can see we do have some type of issue. That's just a road hazard and it's not causing any delays. Let's take a live look outside at the DOT cameras. This is 40 and Wade Avenue. You can see traffic has definitely started to fill in in both directions. 521 and athletes shining a light on mental health among young people. We are going to take you to the important conversation at Wake County, a. Wake County Middle School. It's coming up in our 7 a.m. Streaming hour. ABC 11 first alert weather on eyewitness news every day. This morning fans are mourning the loss of actor James V.

So we've talked a lot about ultra-processed foods recently, sedentary lifestyles with our current jobs and how that looks compared to
Starting point is 00:16:56 how things used to look and then chronic stressors of everyday life. But the bottom line is why we study the exact causes of colorectal cancer and younger people. And while we're seeing this kind of rise, we need to increase our vigilance and try to detect colon cancer earlier and treat it earlier. Dr. DeVito says some key symptoms to watch out for include a change in bowel habits like more diarrhea and constipation, fluctuating abdominal pain and blood in your stool. Because colorectal cancer is becoming more common in people under 50, doctors have lowered the
Starting point is 00:17:31 typical screening age to 45. Now to testimony in that landmark social media addiction trial in California, the head of Instagram, Adam Masseri taking the stand yesterday. Messeri was asked whether Instagram hooks young users. He said he doesn't think users can be, quote, clinically addicted to the app, though he acknowledged that problematic use was possible. The trial comes after a now 20-year-old woman filed a lawsuit against YouTube and Instagram's parent company meta.
