Right now, live coverage from your local news leader, breaking stories from overnight and this morning, and your first alert forecast.
Here's what's happening where you live. This is ABC 11 eyewitness news.
On the air at 5 a.m. now, good morning. Carolina, welcome on this Thursday. It's February 5th. I'm Joel Brown.
And I'm Diane Wilson in for Anna Rivera. Thank you for joining us. It's another first alert day.
Right now, a winter weather advisory in a fact across central North Carolina as we track a minor wintry minstery.
through the morning. Yeah, and that's what could lead to some isolated slick spots, mainly bridges and overpass, as I'll first alert you to when to expect drier conditions in my forecast. And this morning, I witness news, live, live through the viewing area, tracking road conditions where you live, what you need to know ahead of your morning commute. And the winter weather, putting a strain on the supply chain with shortage on grocery store shelves and expert ways in on the problem and when things will get better.
Got bread at the house? I do, actually. But I wasn't at the house, so I didn't eat it.
That's a good thing about working so much.
And here you go, working a little bit more today.
What are we expecting?
When you say minor winter, next?
So we have the precept that's falling into temperatures that are below freezing for the most part or right at freezing.
And so we could see some spots ice up minorly this morning.
Bridges and overpasses.
Those will be the main concerns everywhere else.
Ground temperature is still warm enough to sustain some moisture on the roads there.
Here's a winter weather advisory until 10.
So once this expires, our first alert day goes away.
But again, you can encounter some slick road.
it's possible. Once something that was really cool where I live we had rainfall on my car,
but as I drove in and the temperatures fell, that rain froze into frozen drops on the vehicle.
So that tells you that the flash freeze certainly can happen this morning. We do have
first alert Dopplernet with precept to the south. So it's coming in many forms this morning,
some light freezing drizzle around Harnet County, Samson Still Hoke, also in the Samson County.
And Johnson County, too, may be seeing some flurries here around Smithfield.
Back towards Wilson County into Wayne County and parts of Edgecombe, Tech County.
could see a few flurries.
I know we have some delays in school this morning.
Temperatures will still be in the 30s,
no matter which hour of the morning you're heading out,
light precept possible through around 10 o'clock or so.
On the way home from school,
we're done with all of that,
but we're still cloudy and cold.
37 degrees are high temperature today.
So here's first of the predictor at noon,
dry conditions that stiff wind still coming in northeast.
We'll see some clearing late tonight,
maybe some breaks in the clouds later,
but overall expect a generally cloudy day.
Here's a live look into Fayetteville.
We have those drops on the lens.
here so indicating that we have moisture around. Temperatures right at freezing in the triangle and most spots to Oxford 28 Burlington 31 along with South Hill 31 degrees in Goldsboro but it feels like the 20s because of that wind which will continue through the day. A little gusty out there 35 degrees at noon 3 o'clock we're cloudy at 37 and we drop below freezing and into the 20s by midnight tonight good news is we have some changes on the way spotty showers on Friday may be ending as a flurry but nothing significant another cold weekend though so temperatures is
in the 30s, but next week, make some plans.
Highs near 60s for some of our week next week.
I'll have more in that coming up.
Right now, weather and traffic together.
Joel and Diane, back to you.
Quaylin, thank you.
Taking a look at the real-time traffic maps.
Well, we will here in a second.
Hopefully, look.
Oh, no, we're going to go to Storm Chaser there.
Storm Chaser is driving on NC 540 in Gardner.
He's reporting they are damp roads,
but passable conditions there.
The wind tree mix and the black ice concerns
forcing several school districts to change plans for today.
The following school districts are on two-hour,
Waze, Wake County, Durham Public Schools, Cumberland County, Chapel Hill Carborough, and Johnston County.
We've got the complete list over on ABC11.com.
This morning, we are still feeling the impacts of two weekends of winter weather, including the strain on supply chains.
Yes, if you've been in the grocery store, local retailers could be grappling with the delivery and travel disruptions from the snow and ice.
And many local shoppers have been met with nearly empty grocery store shelves.
NC State Supply Chain Management Professor Robert Hanfield says some road conditions are still
not safe for drivers. Food Lion says it's working as quickly as possible to restock.
There was like no chicken. There was no meat. It's like everything's gone and it's like why.
Thankfully, I got stuff in home. I just need some gatorades and waters, but that's it.
You know, we kind of had a double whammy where, you know, after the first storm they replenished,
but then the second storm came and they had to replenish again.
Certain roads in certain parts of the triangle have still do have ice on them, unfortunately.
Hempins says he expects stores to replenish their stock as quickly as possible.
Happening now, the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office now searching for the man accused of murdering his own brother.
Here's the guy deputies are looking for.
It's George Snow.
They say Snow killed 65-year-old Donald Snow in a home on East Brinkley Drive in Spring Lake.
Investigators say George Snow was last seen wearing a black and blue white jacket,
black and white plaid pajama pants and white sneakers.
If you know where he might be, call the sheriff.
office. Now to the latest on the immigration crackdown in Minneapolis, the administration announcing
they will be pulling hundreds of federal agents out of Minnesota. The White House says it's part of
their new drawdown initiative. ABC's Nicole D. Antonio's in Washington with the details.
Following weeks of violent protests in Minneapolis, borders are Tom Holman announcing a drawdown
of 700 federal agents. Homan adding the drawdown is the result of new cooperation between
county and federal officials. President Trump sent me here to help
de-escalate what was going on. We're not surrendering our mission. We're not walking away
for our mission. We're just making us more effective and more smart. It comes after the fatal shootings
of Renee Good and Alex Prady at the hands of federal agents. I'm not happy with the two incidents.
It's not, you know, it's both of them. Not one or the other. He was not an angel and she was not an
angel. The governor and mayor of Minneapolis are calling the drawdown a step in the right
but claim there needs to be a faster and larger drawdown of forces.
Nearly 2,000 federal officers remain in the state.
The administration is claiming overall success, saying, quote,
more than 4,000 dangerous criminal illegal aliens have now been arrested in Minnesota.
But as ABC News previously reported, crime had already been on a historic downward trend
before President Trump took office, a statistic that Minneapolis and other Democrat-led cities
in Trump's crosshairs have pointed to.
But this morning, the administration's state.
tactics are facing new scrutiny after a stunning moment of candor from a U.S. attorney appearing
before a judge in St. Paul. That judge saying the government has routinely wrongfully detained
migrants and violated court orders to release them. In response, an exasperated U.S. attorney Julie
Lee describing the effort to get ICE to follow judicial orders as, quote, pulling teeth and saying
to the judge, quote, what do you want me to do? The system sucks, this job sucks. An official
telling ABC News, Lee has since been reassigned.
In Washington, lawmakers continue working to reach an agreement regarding funding for the Department
of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE.
Top Democrats made key demands, including prohibiting ICE agents from wearing masks, requiring
identification and better training.
Nicole De Antonio, ABC News, Washington.
In your voice, your vote, the State Board of Elections is disqualified.
One of the Republican candidates vying for Tom Tillis' U.S. Senate seat, the board ruling
Margot Dupree is not a properly registered voter or qualified primary
candidate in North Carolina. The investigation came after a complaint by Jerry Reinold,
Fayetteville Republican, who suggested Dupree might be living in Marion County, Florida.
And she last voted in Florida in April 2025 in the primary elections there. You must be a
North Carolina resident to run for our U.S. Senate seat. Yesterday, election officials determined
Dupre is unable to prove her primary residence is in North Carolina. Dupre was one of seven
Republicans seeking to replace Senator Tillis.
And we're looking ahead to the North Carolina,
2026 election.
In-person early voting starts next week, February 12th and runs through February 28th.
March 3rd is a primary election day.
The last day to register to vote is this Friday, February 6th.
All right, 508 is the time now.
And right now, athletic retail giant Nike facing accusations of discrimination against white workers.
What we know about the federal investigation underway.
And booking a cheap airline ticket could come with some hidden fees.
We'll break down which airlines may have used.
You pay more than you expect.
And this morning, a winter weather advisory until 10 could see some icy spots with the lingering precept.
We have mainly south and east of the triangle.
Cold day ahead.
Feels like temperatures, upper 20s, low 30s.
When we have a warm up, that's coming up in my forecast.

There's a live look from R to you this morning. Most of us are drying out from the triangle in north.
Area south and east still dealing with some of that light precept, which could lead to some icy roads and
slick conditions, mainly on elevated surfaces this morning. So we'll still be on watch for that,
especially those of you from Harnett County, south to Cumberland, Harnett, even east towards
Edgecombe and Wilson counties. Most of the moisture, though, pulling away from us with the
cold front offshore. Again, we have those cold conditions around the area as a whole all the
way down to South Carolina and Virginia. Across the state today, 30s for the most part, for highs.
Tomorrow, a little bit warmer near 50 in Fayetteville, 46 in Raleigh, but we'll have a chance
for some showers, maybe a few flurries in the afternoon. Colt weekend and then next week,
warming up. More on that coming up. Joel. Quaylin, thank you. New this morning,
a federal investigation is now underway over allegations that sneaker giant Nike discriminating.
against white workers. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says the probe focuses on whether
Nike's diversity, equity, and inclusion goals unfairly disadvantaged some employees. The EEOC is seeking
records dating back to 2018. That includes layoff criteria, how the company tracks race and
ethnicity, and whether that data influenced pay. There's also allegations Nike restricted mentoring
or career development by race. If you plan on flying anytime soon, personal finance website,
Nerd Wallet ran a little analysis to help you out with fees.
According to a new study, most airlines charge about the same for bags with JetBlue a bit higher.

And Michael's one-on-one with rapper and actor Christopher Reed.

We're back at 515 on this first alert day for slick road conditions.
The first alert storm chaser on the lookout for possible icy spots.
First alert Doppler net showing some wintry precipitation moving out of the area right now.
meteorologist, Quaylon Murphy, has her forecast coming up in just a few minutes.
Meantime, new flu numbers are out, and there are signs of improvement.
The number of people visiting emergency room departments and admitted to hospitals continues trending down across most of the state, except in western North Carolina.
Those numbers are also down sharply compared to the past two flu seasons.
Since last week, 10 more people have died from flu-related complications.
We turn now to a little boy with a big warning about a popular trend on social media.
This morning, nine-year-old Caleb is on the men after he suffered third-degree burns.
Caleb had been taken a sensory toy called Nido Cube and placed it in the microwave.
Caleb's mother says a cube burst and a thick gel inside.
The squishy toy now scolding hot stuck to his face.
Caleb was following a popular trend on social media.
The goal is to make the toy more flexible.
His mom says he didn't see it online but heard about it from a friend.
My friend did it before, but she put it in for...
Like, she didn't get hurt.
These people don't know the repercussions of what these challenges and goofy trends can do to kids.
The Illinois Hospital that treated Caleb says he's a fourth case they've seen this year involving Nido cubes.
He says he'll be telling his friends not to copy anything on social media without asking an adult first.
It is a dream come true for an Apex teenager.
He gets to go to the Super Bowl.
16-year-old James Walter went through two and a half.
years of chemotherapy for leukemia and thanks to make a wish eastern north
Carolina he is now in San Francisco for Super Bowl 60 honestly such a huge
thanks to God and the people at the Make a Wish Foundation like dream come
true once-in-a-lifetime opportunity I'll be walking the red carpet and
attending the honors ceremony and whatnot and yeah tour of the stadium
and stuff but it's all great yeah it's going to
get the full experience. James says despite being a Duke fan, he will be rooting for former
UNC quarterback Drake May, who of course plays for the Patriots. Now let's take a look,
live look outside. Here's a view of the downtown Raleigh from our Pendo Sky Cam at
301 Hillsborough Street right now. Winter weather advisory is in effect through this morning.
And temperatures at freezing at freezing at freezing. Yeah, right at freezing. Most spots right
at freezing. So I think that's why we're not seeing any major issues out there on the roads.
And the precept is generally light right now.
So trailing off and over the next few hours, improvements.
The advisory expires at 10.
That's when our first alert day will also expire.
His first alert, Doppler.
You can see where the precept is confined right now.
It's south and east of the triangle.
So basically anywhere from Harnett County to Johnston,
Northern Samson County, Cumberland County,
far eastern Hocke, and to Nash County,
Wilson, Etchcombe, and Wayne counties this morning.
So this is where the precept,
may result in a few flurries
for those of you around Smithfield and East,
light drizzle, freezing drizzle possible for all other locations.
And that's why the advisory is in place until 10 a.m.
Elevated surfaces, bridges overpasses.
Those are the spots we want to be on the lookout for today.
Here's a live look from Fayville.
Another drop here on the lens, but it's falling in the form of rain.
So that's why we're not overly concerned right now.
Temperatures are in the 30s.
Upper 20s in Oxford right at freezing, though, for most of us.
But it feels colder because of the winds.
20s on those feels like temperatures.
It's going to be a cold day, mainly cloudy with some breaks later this afternoon.
So you'll have a little sun at noon today, 35 degrees, so that lingering may be sprinkle chance,
37 degrees at 3 o'clock.
And then skies start to clear gradually tonight.
We'll be in the 20s by midnight tonight into early tomorrow morning.
So we have the surface front offshore along with that low pressure.
Front moves closer Friday our next front, and that's going to bring some shower potential
within into Friday afternoon.
Tomorrow morning is going to be cold, though, to start temperatures below freezing in the 20s.
We'll see increasing clouds of the day.
And then that chance for rain enters a picture in the afternoon.
Very light showers, maybe a few flurries to the north, but no impacts there. Temperatures by 8 p.m. will be in the upper 30s and low 40s. And by that time, we're finished with the precept. Clearing out, though, behind that strong Arctic front. So Saturday is going to be cold. Temperatures in the morning below freezing in the 20s in the afternoon, only in the upper 20s and low to mid 30s. No rainfall for the weekend or early next week. Dry conditions will continue. So today generally cloudy with some late day's sun in spots. Temperatures will be below 40 degrees this afternoon.
night colder down into the 20s with partly cloudy skies a lighter wind from the northwest tomorrow will have sun and clouds high temperatures mid 40s to around 50 degrees so warmer tomorrow with those showers possible in the afternoon is at first alert seven day forecast power by yacu weather so the weekend will be very cold upper 30s for highs 20s at night Monday the high 53 degrees with lows in the 20s Tuesday that warming trend continues with highs approaching 60 degrees some passing clouds on Tuesday Wednesday we jump to a march feel high temperatures in the 60th
I think that's going to feel so nice around here.
And definitely the melting of any lingering ice will continue through next week.
It'll be hard to even realize we had any winter pre-sip around here.
Into the end of next week, Thursday, the high 53 with the front coming through.
So a little dip in temperatures Friday into the 40s, but back into the 50s on Saturday.
That's your forecast. Weather and traffic together.
Back to you.
Quailan, thank you.
Let's take a look at the real-time traffic map at this hour.
Crash count very good right now.
You can see all that white and pink.
that is the wintry precept that's falling in the south and eastern part of the viewing area you want to take care there
take a look at the d o t camp at us one at carey parkway right now largely clear traffic moving fine but the roads are
wet and of course there's that winter weather advisory the warning is about slick road conditions
quite not too worried about surface roads but those bridges and overpasses could be problematic take care
