Here's what's happening where you live. This is ABC 11 eyewitness news. Let's get going on your hump day. Good morning, Carolina. Welcome on this Wednesday, June 3rd. I'm Joel Brown. And I'm Anna Rivera. Thanks so much for joining us today. Breaking overnight, tension and turmoil in the Middle East as the U.S. and Iran trade attacks across the region with peace talks appearing. to collapse. And new this morning, the North Carolina Senate race heating up ahead of the November midterms, Roy Cooper releasing his first TV out of the season as primary results pour in from key contests nationwide. A dramatic defeat for the Carolina Hurricanes will have all of the highlights and a recap of last night's loss to the Vegas Golden Nights coming up live from the Lenovo Center,
Starting point is 00:00:53 plus a look ahead to game two happening tomorrow night. Well, not quite the way Cainiacs wanted it to go last night. I woke up, checked my phone. Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. It was a little disappointed. Yeah, it's a hot game last night. Things woke up. It's okay. That's why there's seven.
Starting point is 00:01:09 There you go. Thursday night, looking forward to it. There you go. You may not be looking forward to what's headed out the door for you this morning. It's some colder air. So we've officially tied the record low at RDU, which is 49 degrees, but there are temperatures that are even lower than that. Lewisburg has dropped down the 41, 46 in Smithfield, Irwin, 51 degrees so far. Live look downtown skies are clear compared to you.
Starting point is 00:01:31 yesterday we're 13 degrees colder due points in the low 40s so that's some really dry air in place too so there's a look at current temperatures so far siler city 43 a 20 degree drop from yesterday same for sanford same for rocksboro as well skies are clear we have that front well to the south we're going to have a lot of sunshine today we're into the 50s by 6 by 10 we're looking at sunshine into the 70s by then 80 degrees at 3 and 81 at 6 o'clock so while we warm up today to seasonable levels we're looking at low humidity through the afternoon so really comfortable. Your first alert tomorrow morning's not going to be as cold. Low temperatures, mainly in the 40s or 50s. We could have some 40s to the north and then get ready to sweat. I've bumped highs to Thursday up to the 90s. So that'll be our first force of 90s moving our way, which will continue through the weekend. We'll talk about that and rain potential when I come back. Right now, weather and traffic together, Anna, back to you. So whale in the roads, of course, really quiet. This is pretty typical for this time of morning. No crashes, no congestion. Let's take a live look outside at the DOT cameras. This is 40.
Starting point is 00:02:31 in South Saunders, traffic still really light. Here in the breaking news center this morning, the U.S. and Iran exchanging major strikes overnight as hopes for a peace plan appear to be slipping away. The Pentagon calling at self-defense saying U.S. forces shot down Iranian missiles and drones targeting Kuwait in Bahrain, then hitting an Iranian military site in response. Iran firing back saying its attack was retaliation
Starting point is 00:02:55 after the U.S. fired a missile into the engine room of an oil tanker. And now a critical warning sign. And Tehran has gone silent, cutting off communication with mediators working to extend the fragile ceasefire. I knew this morning, in your voice, your vote, results pouring in from critical primaries nationwide. Voters in six states went to the polls yesterday with key races in California and Iowa. In both states, the Democratic Party also eyeing a roadmap to control Congress in the fall. In the L.A. Mayor's Showdown, incumbent Karen Bass, advancing to the general election in November. And former reality TV star Spencer Pratt also likely advancing.
Starting point is 00:03:32 In Iowa, Democratic voters chose state rep Josh Turek and as their candidate in a key Senate race. And back here in North Carolina, the Senate race intensifying ahead of the midterms, Roy Cooper releasing his first TV ad of the election cycle focusing on the economy. In the video, the former governor and Democratic candidate says he's running for the Senate to make life easier today. He also says he's going after insurance companies ripping people off and Cooper is set to face Republican candidate Michael Watley in November, who's already received President Trump's endorsement.
Starting point is 00:04:03 This race is expected to be one of the most important showdowns this fall as Cooper tries to flip control of the Senate seat for the first time since 2008. Your power bill could be going up, and tonight you get a say. Duke Energy facing a public hearing tonight in Durham as residents get their chance to sound off on the utility's controversial push to hike rates. Duke says it needs the increase to invest in the grid's future, but critics are not convinced and could show up tonight ready to fight back. Bianca Holman live in Durham with the latest. Bianca, good morning.
Starting point is 00:04:33 Hey, good morning, Jill, so that public hearing is happening here at the Durham County Courthouse tonight at 7 o'clock. And of course, it gives you the public a chance to come in and weigh in on this proposed rate hike. So here's what's happening if you're not aware. The rate hike, the company is seeking approval from state regulators for an 18% increase to residential electric rates over the next two years. Duke Energy says the money will help improve the power grid and help upgrade the current infrastructure due to many people moving to the area.
Starting point is 00:05:02 But customers call it unaffordable and want the commission to block the rate hike. Last month's hearing was actually postponed after officials raised security concerns due to staffing from Durham County Sheriff's Office. Adding there was no threat to investigate. Again, it was just a staffing issue on their part. So again, that rate hike proposal being presented here, there's a hearing happening tonight at the 7 o'clock here at the Durham County Courthouse. Back to you. Okay, Bianca, thank you. So it was not the ending that we all wanted, but there's still hope. The Vegas Golden Knights beating the Carolina Hurricanes 5 to 4 during game one of the Stanley Cup final last night. And our Tamara Scott is with us now from the Lenovo Center with all of the highlights, plus new reaction from the Kane's head coach and players. Tamara, good morning. Hey, good morning, Anna. Yeah, this certainly was not the outcome that Keynes fans wanted last night, but the that game was anything but boring last night. Carolina Hurricanes scored just 25 seconds into that first period, opening the game,
Starting point is 00:06:03 and carried that momentum through much of that first period, but Vegas really never seemed rattled. The Golden Knights chipped away at that deficit before delivering that game winner late in the third period, beating Frederick Anderson from the slot with just over three minutes left to play. So Vegas walks away with a 5-4 win, stealing that home ice advantage. And now the Golden Knights head coach says that this is a find-a-way league and his team found a way. Carolina's coach Rod Rindamore and players say that they must work better as a team. Everyone has to play well if you're going to win at this time of year. It's as simple as that.
Starting point is 00:06:40 And, you know, your best guy's got to get on the score sheet, you know, that that's going to have to happen if we want to, you know, get where we want to be. We did some great things, you know, getting pucks deep, cause a turn of. Our foretruck was doing great too. So just cleaning up some things and I think we'll be okay. And so now the pressure shifts back on Carolina. Game 2 set for here at the Lenovo Center once again on Thursday night. The Cains, of course, hoping to even out the series right now before heading back over to Vegas. Back to you.
Starting point is 00:07:15 Okay, Tamara, thank you. And we will have team coverage throughout the Stanley Cup final. It includes pregame specials each game night before puck drops.
