Here's what's happening where you live. This is ABC 11 eyewitness news.
Friday at 5 a.m. Good morning, Carolina. Welcome on this Friday. June the 5th. I'm Joel Brown.
And I'm Anna Rivera. Thanks so much for joining us today. An overtime victory. The hurricane stunned the Golden Knights playoff hero, Seth Jarvis, scoring the game-winning goal for Carolina.
Now the Cades Head West. We'll have all of the highlights from the Lenovo Center.
And breaking news from Capitol Hill, the Senate just passed a major bill funding ice and border patrol.
Here's a live look at the Senate floor where lawmakers held a marathon voterrama.
We'll have all the details on the marathon session.
Plus your weekend weather, temperature is climbing into the 90s.
We could even see mere record highs on Sunday as possible storms move into the region.
And that is where we begin today.
Weather and traffic together.
there is meteorologist Quaylin Murphy.
The canes aren't the only thing hot out there right now.
Temperatures soaring into the 90s Sunday could get near triple digits.
Yeah, we're looking at temperatures to beef up today, and it's going to stay like that really through the start of next week.
Right now we're enjoying some nice, quiet air.
It's not as warm, 62 degrees, but still warmer than yesterday.
The skies are still clear right now.
Due points into the 50s at this time with a light wind.
We're seeing 60s from Clinton to Fayville, Sanford 52, Chapel Hill dipping to 59, Durham,
62 and 50s north and east of the triangle from Lewisburg to South Hill, Rocky Mountain Wilson at 60 degrees.
Mainly clear skies this morning, more sun through the afternoon on the way into school, low 60s on the way home, low to mid 90s under some mainly to partly cloudy conditions.
If you have evening plans, the heat sticks around right through your evening to near 90s degrees still at 7 p.m.
Low 80s at 9.
We're into the 70s by 10 o'clock tonight.
Weekend forecast features highs in the mid 90s again tomorrow, so more of a rinse and repeat.
That's where we'll see near record high.
So the record on Sunday is 100 degrees.
So we'll be really close to that Sunday with an isolated shower and storm chance.
Only 20% for Sunday.
We are tracking a slightly better chance for some showers and storms into early next week.
That's on Monday as our next cold front approaches.
I'm mentioning a cold front technically, but it's not going to bring a big cool down.
Still pretty hot leading into the start of next week.
We'll talk more about that and how much rainfall we'll see with Monday's front coming up in just a few minutes.
Right now, weather and traffic together.
Our first check, Anna, back to you.
Quailin, a nice and quiet start to your Friday morning commute.
No crashes you need to worry about.

overtime thriller of a game two in the Stanley Cup final.

There is no practice today, but head coach Rod Brindamore and some of the players,
We'll talk to the media later this morning before heading to Sin City for games three and four.
Tamara Scott following all the action. She's live at Lenovo. Tamara, good morning.
Hey, good morning, Joel. Man, what a game last night. The Canes are moving on to Vegas with the new life after that dramatic overtime win last night here at the Lenovo Center.
And the Canes, they erased a two-goal deficit Thursday night, scoring three times in the third period to rally back against the Golden Knights.
did answer late to force that overtime, but that's when Seth Jarvis delivered that goal in overtime,
scoring on a power play, bringing the Keynes to a four-three victory. Now, the comeback came as a hurricane
struggle to generate offense for much of the first two periods before finding that rhythm in the third
period, and it was a sold-out crowd. It brought everyone to their feet. But speaking of sold-out,
if you haven't already gotten your $10 ticket to watch game three inside the Lenovo Center while
the boys are in Vegas, yep, you're too late. That watch party is strong.
sold out. But the series now sits to Las Vegas for game three and four before returning to
Raleigh next week. The puck drop for game three is on Saturday at 8 o'clock. Back to you.
Tamara, that Kane's jersey you quote unquote borrowed from your brother is now officially good luck
telling me may not be getting it back for some time. Tamara, thank you. Hey, if you are not heading out
west for games three and four, you can catch all the action right here on ABC 11. Puck drop for
game each game for the Stanley Cup finals is set for 8 p.m. Game three is tomorrow.

A judge sentenced as Tyrell Moore yesterday after he pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the death of David Millett.
Moore was originally charged with murder, but that charge was reduced as part of a plea deal.
For Millett's family yesterday brought closure to a three-year legal fight, but not to their grief.
It's very disappointing that we ended up where we did, frankly.
But like that's the awareness that we would want to raise out of all of this is that the sentencing guidelines, I think, need to be re-evaluated.
Moore was taken into custody immediately after sentencing to begin serving time.
505 is the time in a school in Chapel Hill forced to close down.
Leaders holding the vote during a major meeting last night.
We've got the highlights coming up next half hour.
Plus, an update on mortgage rates ahead of a critical Fed meeting this summer.
Good morning, Clayland.
Hey, good morning.
Right now we're looking at temps, 50s, and 60 skies are clear.
Get ready for bright skies today and heat high temperatures, mid-90s, even hotter into your weekend.

509. Welcome back. A live look at clear
skies in Roxborough. We're getting ready for
sunrise here in about the next hour
or so. Clear conditions across our
state, a few clouds into Virginia, but those
mainly thin clouds. 50s and 60s out the door. You're going to have sunclear if you're heading out
closer to that sunrise time frame. 74 at 9 into the mid 80s at lunchtime today. So maybe you do
lunch outside this afternoon. It's going to be hot though. High temperatures, mid 90s,
a triangle to the sand hills, low 90s in Roxborough today. A lot of sunshine. Dave Matthews
's band at Walnut Creek tonight. That's going to be a hot show near 90 degrees at 7. Mid 70s at 11 o'clock
tonight. Dry conditions for the show statewide today. 80s and 90s for highs.
Charlotte near 90 near 90 in Wilmington,
Greenville 93 and Boone.
81 degrees tomorrow.
The heat continues to build.
So mid 80s for Asheville,
Charlotte up to 90 and the try at 92 near 90 in Wilmington.
Morehead City 82, Greenville, mid 90s,
along with Raleigh and up towards Fayville as well.
Rainfall potential limited through Sunday.
We'll have just a spotty shower chance on Sunday,
but into Monday I think we'll see some better coverage
of a few showers and storms.
No delays on this early flight check this morning on those major hubs.
should see pretty decent flying conditions overall today with some settled weather unsettled for the century United States, at least from the central plain states, into areas around the Midwest as well.
90 degrees in New York City today to get ready for another Knicks game tonight, 85 in Atlanta, Orlando 87, Dallas 83 with thunderstorms along with Chicago, Salt Lake City, 92 degrees.
You know it. We need some rainfall around here so far this month.
Deficit building because we haven't had any rainfall in the bucket zero for Fayetteville and Raleigh.
I'll mention that chance for showers and storms into Monday.
How much rain we could see in that time frame?
I'll have the details coming up.
Joel, back to you.
Quaylon, thank you.
Following breaking news this morning from Capitol Hill,
the Senate just passed a massive $70 billion budget package focused on immigration enforcement.
Lawmakers wrapping up their all-nighter or voterrama marathon session.
Here's a live look on the Senate floor right now.
They clashed over the Justice Department's controversial anti-weaponization fund
and funding for the White House bowlroom makeover.
but the measure does fund homeland security operations at the border through 2029.
The package now heads to the House.
And the Senate will now take up a massive Ukraine aid package.
The House passed the $2 billion measure last night.
18 Republicans split with party leaders and President Trump to approve the legislation.
It would provide military aid to Ukraine and impose sanctions on Russia.
However, the White House argues it would undermine President Trump's efforts to end the war.
He has vowed to veto the measure.
Time now 5-11 in North Carolina,
Attorney General Jeff Jackson demanding answers from Ticketmaster on the Canes Stanley Cup games.
We'll tell you why later this hour.
Plus the World Cup kicking off next week and employers are bracing for a major drop in productivity.
That could cost businesses billions of dollars.
We are local news.
ABC 11 eyewitness news continues now.
Back at 514 and the SBI busted a major vehicle theft ring in the Sandhills, two men under arrest after
investigators raided properties in Hope Mills and Hope County. Officers recovered two cars,
six semi-trucks and three trailers worth more than $630,000. The vehicles were stolen from
locations across North and South Carolina, but investigators believe dozens more stolen vehicles
are still out there. Andre Jump of Hope Mills and Prince Betts of Rayford are both facing multiple
charges. President Trump is urging Congress to pass the Protect College Sports Act. The bipartisan
legislation would give the NCAA more power to enforce rules governor in compensation for college
athletes. Those rules would include limiting athletes to transferring schools only once without
penalty, limiting their eligibility to a maximum of five years, and prohibiting former professional
athletes from playing in college, and prohibiting schools from poaching a coach from another
school during the sports season. Well, the entire triangle is riding with the Cains,
Morrisville, home in the Hurricanes practice facility showing some love, sharing this photo.
to show their support.
We are glad to be part of the community
that's been supporting the Cains,
and we're looking for four wins in a row,
just like we did in the Eastern Conference Finals,
and that's what we're looking to do tonight.
Get that started.
And Mayor Cawley wasn't just cheering from afar.
Here he was right there in the stands
at Lenovo Center last night.
5-16.
Stanley Cup final heading to the Wild Wild West
for games three and four in Las Vegas,
and it's going to cost you a pretty penny
if you want to travel to see the canes in action.
Yeah, our team crunched all of the numbers
and found a trip to Sin City for game three.
We'll set you back $3,200 to $6,100.
Round-trip airfare for two is between $700 and $1,000.
And a two-night hotel stay runs about $400 to $600.
Tickets to the game are your biggest expense,
costing between $1,7004,000.
A ride share is anywhere from $36 to $56,000.
And, of course, you'll have to eat so food could cost.
you between $350 and $400. Meanwhile, if you are keeping an eye on the forecast, you know the heat is on and temperatures climbing into the upper 90s this weekend and Cumberland County officials are helping people in need beat the heat.
The Department of Social Services is now giving away free box fans. To qualify, you need to be below 200% of the current poverty level and have a family member in the home under the age of 2 or over the age of 60 or with a sensitive medical condition. If you are interested in a free fan, contact the social services office.
in Fayetteville. Yeah, now's the time we got to start paying attention to this. We are going into a
string of 90 plus degree days. This really starts to have an effect on your body. It really does.
It can take a toll. And this is June, of course, start of meteorological summer. We expect more
heat, of course, to intensify in the months ahead. Mid-90s for highs today and Saturday. So that's
10 degrees above average. Sunday, we're approaching 100 degrees. Monday, we have a front that comes
through later in the day. So we're still into the low 90s on highs. I dropped Tuesday's high to
89 91 degrees on Wednesday. So we'll be close to record highs more so on Sunday. Sunday's record is 100. Right now forecast high is 98 degrees. That was from a heat wave in 2008. Here's a live look into downtown Raleigh. Those skies are clear beautifully clear this morning. So we want to have some bright conditions, which could impact your morning commutes a little slow where the sun glare takes over. Temperatures are in the 50s and 60s. Roxborough 50 degrees Durham and Raleigh 61 Carborough 58 low 60s from.
from Fable to Clinton, Goldsboro, 61, Rocky Mount Wilson.
You're at 62. A light wind overall, so humidity values are on the low side.
We'll have a comfortable to refreshing air mass in general today, not the duo of heat and humidity for the afternoon.
So we'll just focus on the heat and the intensity of that.
Radar and satellite composite shows clear skies pretty much statewide.
A few clouds into Virginia.
High temperatures today climb into the mid-90s.
If you have that round of golf, of course, the earlier you get out, the better.
91 at 6, 85 degrees towards 8 o'clock this evening.
More unsettled weather across the century, United States.
Again, we're seeing that storm action developing around that ridge of high pressure.
Ridge still intact for Saturday, which is why we build those highs back into the mid-90s,
upper 90s into Sunday.
You can see the front approaching Sunday, but holding off on rainfall for the most part through the day.
I have just a stray shower storm in the afternoon, early evening hours of Sunday.
Most of us will stay dry.
Monday, the front starts to push in, so we'll have a chance for,
a few showers and storms in the afternoon and early evening. But this is it. Rainfall totals
through the next seven days, a quarter inch or less. So there will be some spots that
end up with completely dry conditions here in the next seven days. And of course, that does
not help with our area lake levels. Falls Lake is now over five feet below full pool. And
Jordan Lake continues to see a deficit too for Gaston as well. After Monday, rain totals shift
towards 20 percent to say through the middle of next week. So no big help there. High temperatures
today. Low to mid-90s. Overnight loads will be in the 60s into tomorrow morning. So closer to
average, if you're heading out to the beach this weekend, dry weather Saturday and Sunday, highs in the 80s,
maybe a stray shower or storm Monday. In the mountains, a mix of 70s and 80s for highs this weekend,
partly cloudy skies. Better rain chances on Monday with that cold front pushing through. In the
tropics, no concerns for development in the Atlantic Basin in the next seven days. There's your 7-day
forecast tracking 60s tonight, mid-90s on Saturday with lots of sun, 70 degrees,
into Saturday night. If you're going to be heading out this weekend, having a good time,
make sure you're hydrating properly, taking breaks as necessary if you have to do some work
outside. Tuesday behind the front upper 80s, but back to those low 90s Wednesday into Thursday
of next week. Weather and traffic together, Anna, back to you.
Coelan, it's really quiet to start your Friday morning commute. We're not seeing any issues
to slow you down. Crash count still sitting at zero. Let's take a live look outside at the DOT
cameras. Maybe you're heading to the airport for a weekend trip. This is a live look at 40 in
aviation parkway you can see traffic is still light and we have breaking news out of nightdale
