Starting point is 00:00:03 Right now, live coverage from your local news leader, breaking stories from overnight and this morning, and your first alert forecast. Here's what's happening where you live. This is ABC 11 eyewitness news. We begin with breaking news at RDU Airport this morning. We have a breaking news reporter there on the scene right now. Bianca Holman at Terminal 1, talk of a bomb scare and an evacuation. What's the latest from there, Bianca? Yes, we are right here at the parking debt that services Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.
Starting point is 00:00:36 As we were walking over here, we saw that the doors to get into Terminal 1 were blocked. Lots of security guards there, and this is the outside of Terminal 1. You can see people are still being dropped off, but it is closed. They have evacuated everyone from inside the terminal to outside. And so most of those passengers have been escorted down the terminal to be away from the doors, but there's still being people dropped off. We reached out to RDU to find out exactly what that threat was. and you know, how long they're going to be searching
Starting point is 00:01:03 and what that investigation looks like, but we have not heard back just yet. But you can see that there are several emergency vehicles and police that are here on scene. Passengers still being dropped off, but we do know that this will potentially impact flights that are due to leave in this hour into the next hours because all the passengers
Starting point is 00:01:24 and even staff are outside of the terminal. We saw some TSA staff, we saw some other airlines, airline employees that have been escorted outside of the terminal. So again, we're trying to learn more. And of course, we'll be talking to passengers in just a moment to try to learn what they have heard and what they're hearing from their airlines. So again, please stay with us as we get more details about this developing situation.
Starting point is 00:01:47 Back to you. A big hiccup in the morning rush over at RDU. Bianca Holman tracking that for us. Bianca, thank you. Let's take a live look outside on this Monday morning. If you have downtown Raleigh from the Pendo Skycam, all clear and things, warming up big time this week, Kwayland. Yeah, we're looking at temperatures today to make that climb into the 70s this afternoon.
Starting point is 00:02:06 So that'll be above yesterday's highs in the 60s. We're looking at partly cloudy skies today and wind from the southwest at 15 miles per hour. Generally, we have a statewide burn ban in effect until further notice because we've just been so dry around here lately. And conditions will be favorable for fires that begin to spread pretty quickly. So no outdoor burning, please, for today and until further notice. It's 51 degrees right now in RADU. have mainly cloudy skies. We're starting off warmer than yesterday.
Starting point is 00:02:33 That's for sure. Winds coming in from the southwest at seven. Still some 40s around parts of the area, 46 and Irwin, Fayetteville 47. It's 47 degrees in Oxford and Durham 51 South Hill. Also 51 degrees. I mentioned these winds from the south and they'll be pretty light early on,
Starting point is 00:02:48 but they'll pick up later today. Some clear skies south of the triangle, but a bit more cloud cover around the triangle locations to the north and east too. You'll have clouds and sun throughout the day today. There are those wind gusts by late afternoon. So as you look at your 12-hour planner for today, near 60 by 10 o'clock this morning, into the 70s by 2 low 70s still at 6 o'clock. If you have some evening plans, we're going to hold on to 70s through 7 p.m.
Starting point is 00:03:11 And 60s will come our way surrounding at 8 o'clock all the way through 10 tonight. I don't have much rain in the forecast for this week. I'll first alert you to the next best chance for showers and spotty storms. Coming up in just a few minutes. Right now, weather and traffic together. Anna, back to you. So far so good for your Monday morning commute. We're not seeing any major delays to slow you down.
Starting point is 00:03:30 Here's a live look right now at I-40 in Airport Boulevard where traffic is moving nicely. And we are tracking breaking news on a double homicide in Moore County. This was at 930 last night. Take a look at this map right here. This is on the 100 block of Gaines Street in the town of Aberdeen just south of Pinehurst. I witness news on the scene after Moore County Sheriff's deputies found two men shot to death on the front porch of the home. They say a third person reportedly ran away from the scene. And deputies not sure if that person is a suspect.
Starting point is 00:04:00 possibly another victim. This is an ongoing investigation more as we get it. Now to the ongoing war with Iran, the first American troops reaching the Middle East overnight, and President Trump still not ruling out a ground invasion in Iran. Negotiations with Iran underway as the war enters its fifth week. Now President Trump saying there could be a deal soon before camping down expectations moments later. Overseas, the Trump administration says the first U.S. ground troops are arriving, including 3,500 sailors and Marines from the a 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit equipped with transport and strike fire aircraft and amphibious assault capabilities. A second Marine unit is expected to arrive in the region in May, and another 1,500 soldiers from the Army's elite 82nd Airborne are also preparing to deploy the 82nd from Fort Bragg trained to parachute behind enemy lines.
Starting point is 00:04:51 Now to Duke Energy proposing significant rate hikes in North Carolina. Today the State Utilities Commission is set to hold a public hearing to review the request, which has drawn strong opposition. There's a protest plan for tonight, Duke Energy customers speaking out against the rate hike. Tamara Scott live on Halifax Mall and downtown rally force where demonstrators plan to gather later, Tamara. Hey, good morning, Joel and Anna. Yeah, if you've had a high bill recently, you are not alone. There is expected to be several Duke Energy customers gathering here later today to make their voices heard about their higher utility bills. So Duke Energy customers are going to be rallying today around 4 o'clock this afternoon before demanding answers during the public hearing. at a later meeting discussing potentially adding additional rates.
Starting point is 00:05:33 Now, the state report shows electric bills in North Carolina have climbed about 22% since 2020. And Duke Energy is now asking for another increase about 15% over the next two years. Duke customers have recently taken to social media calling for an independent audit of Duke Energy's billing system. Now, the power company says the higher bills are largely tied to increased usage, pointing to one of the coldest renters in a decade. Now that demonstration starts at 4 o'clock this afternoon at the Halifax Mall. This is before the public hearing, the public hearing following at 7. So we'll be there for both of those.
Starting point is 00:06:08 We'll bring you the latest. Follow with I-Mitness News. Back to you. Okay, Tamara, thank you. In Central North Carolina, the Division of Motor Vehicles is set to open a new license plate agency in Rocky Mound. The new location opens today at 659 Tiffany Boulevard. It will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Starting point is 00:06:25 Services offered include vehicle registration services and title transactions, as well as vehicle license plate renewals, replacement tags, disability plates, and duplicate registrations. 5.06 and a heartbreaking exit in March Madness for the Duke Blue Devils, the last minute shot from Yukon last night, ending Duke's final four dreams. Installing plans why UNC Chapel Hill says it's suspending talks about the proposal to relocate the Dean Smith Center. Good morning, Quay. Hey, good morning. We're tracking temperatures today in the 70s. this afternoon. A big warm up, though, coming tomorrow. I'll have more on that in my forecast. Big heads up if you know someone or are headed to RDU yourself right now. Terminal 1 has been evacuated. Those are all the passengers out there milling about in the roadway there outside the
Starting point is 00:07:15 terminal. There was a reported bomb threat and officials have evacuated the terminal. We've got Bianca Holman on the scene. We'll get a live update from her coming up soon. For now, though, another check of weather with Clayland Murphy. Thank you, Joel. 509. We're tracking a statewide burn band today just because conditions will be favorable for fires at start to spread quickly. So please know outdoor burning today. Here's a view from RDU. One of those flights taking off probably from Terminal 2 this morning. We do have mainly cloudy skies right now. We'll see a bit of sunshine though. As the day progresses temperatures in the 50s through 10, low 60s at 11 by noon today. We're right around those mid-60s. Afternoon temperatures though in the 70s from the triangle to the sandhills. 60s and 70s statewide today. But tomorrow we flip the switch into the 80s for high. temperature still going to be running above average tomorrow through the end of the week we have quiet weather for the most part across the country some unsubled weather across the plain state too 70 forecasts coming up joel an back to you see you then quaitland thank you a double dose of heartbreak for duke basketball fans today both the men's and women's team saw their NCAA
Starting point is 00:08:17 tournament runs and on sunday the women falling short against u n ucela ucd 70 to 58 but the men's loss That's the one no one can stop talking about. Duke led Yukon for nearly the whole game, one possession away from moving on, then Yukon let it fly from way beyond the ark and just like that. Season over. A head reaction from the players and the fans still trying to process it all. Meantime UNC is also making some headlines this morning. The university telling eyewitness news. They're pausing discussions about the proposal to relocate the Dean Smith Center as the Tar Heels search for a new men's basketball coach. In a statement sent to ABC 11, Carolina Athletics says, quote, the University of North Carolina is suspending the ongoing discussions about the future of the Smith Center in order to focus on identifying and selecting a new head men's basketball coach.
Starting point is 00:09:06 Arena discussions will resume after the new coach has had time to acclimate to the program and focus on future needs. The university fired Davis, Huber Davis, after the Tar Heels, were eliminated in the first round of the NCAA tournament for the second consecutive season. Students telling eyewitness news, Davis firing is a bit is bittersweet. for them. I do appreciate all the work that Coach Davis did at the university. I don't think we're going to find someone who loves UNC as much as Coach Davis and the legacy he's leaving, along with the legacy of the people that came before him is incredible and it shows how remarkable the Carolina family is. So it is a little bittersweet to think that we're going to go to a
Starting point is 00:09:44 national search and that we might have someone from the outside coming in and coaching at Carolina. Davis led Carolina to the national title game in 2022, but didn't deliver championships and won seats like program stakeholders hoped for. 612 or 512 rather and straight ahead what we know about golf legend Tiger Woods's future as he faces charges for driving under the influence. Keep it here. And now to back to that breaking news at RDU Airport. Yeah, all passengers currently being evacuated from Terminal 1. Bianca Holman live at RDU this morning. Bianco, what have you learned?
Starting point is 00:10:22 Hey, good morning you guys. So yeah, we are still here in the parking deck, but as you can see, these are people who weren't even able to get inside to the terminal one. Some folks were on the plane. They had to be evacuated off the plane. I spoke with a family. They were headed out to Idaho. They were on the plane. They were in their seats and the flight attendants had to come to them and say, you know, we have to evacuate.
Starting point is 00:10:41 So they were evacuated off of the plane. Many of them have not been, of course, rebooked just yet. This is an ongoing situation. So it's very unclear as far as how long. long this terminal will be evacuated because of this threat that we have learned about. We have reached out to RDU to find exactly how long this investigation is going to last and what we can tell passengers, but as right now, we have not heard any more details on how long they'll be investigating the entire terminal and where this threat came from.
Starting point is 00:11:07 So, of course, we'll continue to talk with passengers, see how they're making out. But you can imagine many people had hour layovers. They're going to miss their next flights. Many people are trying to get on board. They're missing those flights and things like that. So of course it's an ongoing situation. Of course, we, some of people that we have talked to that were due to catch a flight this morning, didn't even receive a text just yet that there is a situation going on here. So a lot of people arriving at the airport learning about this as they arrive and trying to make other arrangements.
Starting point is 00:11:35 So we're going to send it back to you. And again, Bianca, this began with calls about a bomb threat. So they are checking that out. And in the meantime, a lot of inconvenience for passengers in Terminal 1 at RDU. Bianca, thank you. We turn now to Tiger Woods in the fallout from here. his DUI arrest last week, just as he was staging that comeback. One legal analyst says the charges against him may not stick. ABC's Hannah-Botton has the story. This morning, questions about Tiger
Starting point is 00:12:01 Woods future after the Gulf legend was arrested and charged with DUI. Authorities say Woods was speeding when he crashed and flipped his SUV mirror's home on Jupiter Island, Florida. He was not injured and passed a breathalyzer, but police say Woods refused to let officers take a blood or urine sample. Refusing such a test is a crime in Florida and legal experts say it could hurt his case. But without that sample, other experts believe the charges against Woods may not stick. They're going to have a very hard time proving DUI with property damage, though, because you have to prove impairment and feel sobriety exercises alone, especially with Tiger's background, with his surgeries, with his injuries, with his ailments, and the fact that he just rolled a car and climbed out of the passenger window.
Starting point is 00:12:48 is going to be an uphill battle for the prosecution. Woods pleaded guilty to reckless driving back in 2017 after a toxicology report revealed multiple pain and sleep medications in his system. Four years later, he was involved in a rollover crash, nearly losing his leg. He was in the midst of mounting a comeback after taking last year off because of multiple injuries and surgeries. A source telling People magazine, the golfer, is frustrated about his state of health, adding he wants to play in major tournaments like the Masters, but needs to get real. Should Woods enter the Masters, a separate source tells people his girlfriend, Vanessa Trump,
Starting point is 00:13:27 the ex-wife of Donald Trump Jr., would support his decision. Woods is expected to be arraigned within two to three weeks. If convicted of DUI, he could spend up to six months behind bars. Hannah Bataugh, ABC News, New York. All right, let's take a live look outside with the view of the Bull City. Durham right now part of that statewide burn ban that will remain in effect and you've been talking a lot about that Quailin because of all the wind we're seeing and how dry it's been. Yeah we've just been so dry lately so basically officials are saying no burning today. We cannot risk it and this is until further notice. So not just today. This will extend likely through the end of the week because rain chances won't climb until then. We're looking at rain chances to be on the lower side too. This is the problem. The deficit for this month, not only this month, but remember we have had drought conditions going to back to fall of last year. So they continue with limited rainfall potential. Unfortunately,
Starting point is 00:14:20 Wednesday I have a stray shower chance 30 percent the rest of the week. Also looking rather dry, too. The problem is that there's a cold front that we were tracking, hopefully in hoping that it would be pooled our way, but now it looks like it gets stalled a bit more to the west. And so we will be definitely in need of rainfall this week. Temperatures on the other hand, climbing. Our average high is 67. Today we're going to be above average. Yesterday we topped out in the upper 60s. today around the mid-70s. 80s return starting tomorrow for the rest of the week. We'll be in the load to mid-80s too. Another view here into downtown Durham. Temperatures are in the 50s right now in Durham and Chapel Hill Upper 40s in Raleigh. Most spots are seeing 40s
Starting point is 00:14:56 right now. 45 in Clinton and Irwin, Sanford down to 42. It's 45 in Siler City. Roxburgh 52 in Ronew Rapids. You're at 46 degrees. So we are much warmer this morning compared to yesterday. We do have pretty light winds for now. But as we get more sunshine today, and more of that heating to occur. We're going to have more of those winds later. A little breezy at times with gusts in the teens and 20s this afternoon. You can see those clouds rolling in from the north and west. We do have a bit more cloud cover around the triangle north.
Starting point is 00:15:25 So mainly clear skies to the south, but we'll break out to some sunshine. Today, 54 degrees at 9.60s by noon today, 70s. Heading towards 3 o'clock this afternoon. We're back to those 60s at 9 tonight and then into the 50s tomorrow morning. So some really mild conditions coming our way in the next 24 hours. 70s today for us, Jacksonville in the 70s, too. Generally, the region will be looking at temps in the 70s all the way to Georgia, New Orleans 70s today with a few showers and storms. That front starts to draw a bit closer to the Ohio Valley into tomorrow, but still to our west. And so it's going to lead to warming trend to continue for us into the 80s. Pollin levels with dry conditions will stay high through the end of the week. Temperatures today. Low 70s to the north for highs, mid-70s to upper 70s triangle and south. Tonight we're in the 50s, about. of average by around 10 to 15 degrees and two tomorrow morning. Here's your first alert 70 forecast powered by ACC weather.
Starting point is 00:16:19 Wednesday, April 1st, 85 degrees, lows in the 60s, low 80s on Thursday. Some decent weather for tailgating ahead of the Keynes game on Thursday with mainly sunny skies. For Good Friday, I do have a chance for a stray storm, high temperature around 82, low 60s at night. Saturday mainly cloudy with dry conditions is how it looks for now, 84 degrees. And then Easter Sunday, just a late day storm chance with high temperatures and. the low 80s. Weather and traffic together. Anna, back to you. Quailan, right now the roads are really quiet, of course. This is usually what we see this time of morning. Plus, we have to take into consideration a lot of kids are on spring break right now. But we do have one issue. We are
Starting point is 00:16:55 tracking. This was reported by police. It's at Lake Wheeler Road and Penny Road. We're getting reports of some type of obstruction in the road. Let's take a live look outside now with the DOT cameras. This is 40 in South Saunders. Traffic still really like. 522 now and make sure you stick around for Good Morning America. Ahead at 7 o'clock, the new study on exercise and chronic illness and what you can do that may have the biggest impact on reducing the risk of some diseases. And what we know about the White House launching a new app that's next in TechBites. Alerting you first. First alert weather on ABC 11. Users can punch in prompts describing the kinds of posts they'd like to see, and Addy will generate the feed. Blue Sky says the process is like a conversation. And finally, the Trump administration just rolled out a new White House app.
Starting point is 00:18:15 It has a photo gallery, press releases, and other official communications all in one place. It claims to give Americans a direct line to the White House. And there's a feature to report people to ICE. Those are your tech bites. I'm Sophie Play. Have a great day. Sophie, thanks. Durham Parks and Iraq is looking ahead to the summer season. There's a job fair tonight from 5 to 7 at Holton Career and Resource Center. Organizers say candidates can learn all about the available, full-time, part-time, and seasonal positions.
