Right now, live coverage from your local newsleader, breaking stories from overnight and this morning, and your first alert forecast.
Here's what's happening where you live. This is ABC 11, eyewitness news.
Good Monday morning, Carolina. Welcome on this Monday, May 11th. I'm Bianca Holman and for Joel Brown.
And I'm Anna Rivera. Thanks so much for joining us today. Right now, we're tracking the chance for rain and storms midweek.
That's right, guys. That little rain today. We're really focused as we get.
into midweek, especially Wednesday night.
That's a decent chance we could get some heavier downpours.
I've got your forecast.
The budget battle brewing in Raleigh, new details this morning on the potential property
tax hike in Wake County.
Paying tribute to officers who made the ultimate sacrifice.
The plans to remember 23 officers killed in the line of duty in Wake County.
Well, it is fine for the first check of weather and traffic together.
Meteorologist Steve Stewart in for Kualin Murphy this morning.
We had a pretty decent weekend, Steve.
What's Monday looking like?
Yeah, well, it was cloudy, much cooler.
Yesterday we hit 87. We'll be about 70 if we're lucky today. So that's a big drop in the temperature. Boy, you know, we got the clouds coming. We got us a front, but we just don't have a lot of moisture. The lion's share of what you're seeing here is going to be up in Virginia. We're going to get some rain today. Not everyone gets it, but the areas that do, you're going to be disappointed when you're looking at the rain gauge. Not much at all. Downtown right now, fair skies. Clouds will increase today. We'll get a couple of spotty showers. I stress spotty as we get into the afternoon. The breeze is going to pick up, making a few.
even cooler out there. Matter of fact, our northern counties are going to be probably in the low 60s for highs today.
87 yesterday, of course, that was already U.S. spiked most areas around 84 around the triangle.
And there's that deficit about a half an inch. So we need rain. Don't expect much today.
Our focus is really Wednesday evening to overnight. WPC is upwards of a half inch or three quarters of an inch.
It might be a quick hitting, a small window of around maybe two to three hours that we could get some rain, but it could be some heavier rain.
holds. Meantime out and about today getting your walk or jog in temperatures in the 60s dry during the morning as we get midday early afternoon could see a couple of sprinkles or a spotty shower but notice a better chances up in our northern counties and also down east closer to the coast with some thunderstorms but this kind of fizzles out so don't expect much rain at all as we go through the day today. 55 right now that's about five degrees cooler than yesterday with upper 50s in Roxburgh 50 in the Sanford and Fayetteville currently at 61.
If you have evening plans, if you're heading out, make sure you have a jacket, no matter what you're doing.
Numbers getting down to 51 later on.
And tomorrow morning, we're in the 40s.
But get ready.
It's going to feel like summer this weekend.
More on that in a few minutes, Anna.
Well, Steve, right now, the roads look really quiet, too.
You shouldn't have much to worry about when you head out this morning as far as crashes or congestion.
Let's take a live look outside of the DOT cameras.
This is 40 in Aviation Parkway, both directions moving nicely.
And now to the budget battle unfolding in Raleigh, as homeowners have their first chance to speak up on the,
latest county proposal that includes a property tax hike. Yeah, so it comes a week after the
county manager presented his budget proposal, which fully funds Wake County schools, but comes
with a 2% property tax hike increase, though. Sean Coffey joining us now live from Raleigh to
break this all down. Sean. Yeah, good morning, guys. Well, in his passionate presentation last
week, county manager David Ellis said that the new expected revenue that Wake County brought in
this fiscal year fell tens of millions of dollars below their average.
And he really blamed a lot of that on the national and local pressures we have seen over the course of the last year or so.
He blamed that mix of pressures in turn on the tax hike that now he's proposing in this latest budget presentation.
And Ellis said at that meeting that if the state funded its own obligation, tax rates would be 19 cents lower, specifically pinning the tax hikes on forces like inflation and the lack of a new state budget in creating a shortfall.
His proposal goes beyond simply funding the Wake County School District's $823 million
dollar requests.
It adds 16 EMT positions in the county, reopens the jail annex, and includes funding to hire
92 new detention officers here in Wake County.
But tonight, residents will get their first of two chances to weigh in on all of this
as public comment will open up here at the Commons building in a meeting at 7 p.m.
We'll have much more coverage on that later tonight on eyewitness news.
Back to you guys.
Okay, Sean, thank you.

In Wake County, a man facing multiple charges this morning after a single vehicle fatal crash
in Raleigh. It happened last Saturday night in the 400 block of South New Hope Road. Police
say the driver of a Toyota Ravre 4 was speeding when he drowned into the median and struck a tree.
They say the impact caused vehicle to slide sideways on the driver's side into a larger tree for
overturning. We're told two passengers in the vehicle died from their injuries. Police say,
The driver 19-year-old Jonathan Deloreo
Olmos was taken to the hospital.
He's been charged with driving while impaired

It was a very special day over at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham.

was the commencement speaker.
5.07 now, and right now we are feeling that pain at the pump as gas prices continue to rise,
how the Trump administration plans to offer some relief for drivers.
This morning, new details into that deadly collision at Denver's airport.
What authorities are saying about the investigation?
Move over or get pulled over.
The common courtesy, now law here in North Carolina, the steep fine for violators.
All right, listen, we got some rain out in the mountains right now, all very light.
Some of this will make it here today.
You'll be disappointed on the amounts of rainfall.
Some of us are going to miss that all together.
Fair skies right now.
Temperatures are in the 50s and even a couple of 60s.
We're going to be much cooler today and a big warm up by the weekend.
All the details after the break.
A really quiet start to your Monday morning commute.
Our crash count still sitting at zero.

Welcome back, everybody. Happy Monday, too. You hope you had a great day yesterday. Today's
A lot cooler. A lot of clouds. There will be some rain around. I want to stress if you get rain at your house, it's going to be very light, probably less than a tenth of an inch. Some of us won't get any rain at all or just a trace. We're really focused on Wednesday. That's going to be our better opportunity for a decent rain. And it's probably Wednesday night. You might be in bed by the time the rain gets here. So daytime just clouds coming in. There are the showers now. The lion's share of that is going to lift off to the north. How about a walk this morning? Not bad. It'll be dry. Clouds are moving on in. Temperatures in the 60s.
I think 70 by the time we get to midday.
And then the numbers might actually fall a little bit later this afternoon.
55 and in North Hills right now.
Widespread temperatures are in the 50s, but a couple of 60s down in the sand hills.
A cooler day today.
But the heat is coming for the weekend.
We'll show you that in the 7-day, Anna.
Okay, Steve, thank you.
And now to a traffic alert for drivers in Wake County.
A portion of Capitol Boulevard in Raleigh is back open after a water main break.
The water main break happened over the weekend at the intersection of Capitol Boulevard and Ratchford Drive.
It's unclear what caused that water main to break.
Move over or get pulled over.
That's the message from the governor's highway safety program.
Yeah, their new campaign runs today through Sunday to remind drivers about the state's move over law.
The law requires drivers to move over a lane or slow down when approaching emergency vehicles stopped on the side of the road.
Not only does it help keep workers safe, but violators could face at least a $250 fine if they fail to obey the law.
Well, make sure you stick around from Good Morning America.
ahead at 7 o'clock, the new magic number of steps that you should take a day to lose weight and keep it off.
And now to the high price of gas and the new push to save drivers' money as hopes for a peace deal with Iran hit a new setback.
Here's ABC Sophie Fleigh.
Overnight, oil prices rising again after President Trump rejected Iran's response to a U.S. peace proposal.
The president saying, I have just read the response from Iran's so-called representatives.
I don't like it. Totally unacceptable.
The U.S. proposal called for Iran to reopen the strait of her moves.
In exchange, the U.S. would ease its blockade of Iranian ports for a 30-day period
when both sides could negotiate a full deal.
When the mediators, in this case, Pakistan, ask us, head of state to head of state,
to give this negotiation another chance before we go back to bombing Iran,
then I think that's a completely appropriate choice for,
President Trump to make. Iran's response reportedly included a demand to end the war and lift oil
sanctions. With the straight still closed, global oil prices jumped more than 3% overnight,
and stocks falling. Overconcerned higher energy prices could slow the global economy. Gas prices are
averaging 448 a gallon nationwide, up $1.50 higher since the war began. And now, an indication,
the Trump administration may offer some relief to drivers. The energy secretary suggests the administration
is open to suspending the federal gas tax, which is 18 cents per gallon.
All measures that can be taken to lower the price at the pump and lower the prices for Americans,
this administration is in support of.
It's a shift from last week when a White House official said suspending the gas tax was not under consideration.
Sophie Flee, ABC News, New York.
Well, China is making it official.
President Trump will visit the country this week.
China's Foreign Affairs Ministry have confirmed the visit on Sunday.
Although the Trump administration had previously released details of the summit between the president and China's president.
The state visit will begin in Beijing on Wednesday and last through Friday.
The president's visit comes during the U.S. conflict in Iran and continuing economic tensions between the two superpowers.
The remains of a U.S. soldier who went missing during military exercises in Morocco a week ago have been recovered in the Atlantic Ocean.
The U.S. Army announced the news on Sunday.
Military teams were still searching for a second missing soldier.
The remains were those of first lieutenant Kendrick Key Jr., a fourth air defense artillery officer,
who was one of the two U.S. soldiers who fell off a cliff during a recreational hike in Morocco while off duty.
Lieutenant Key was 27 years old.
This morning, Denver's airport is reviewing security measures after a frontier airline plane hit a person on the runway during takeoff.
Authorities have not yet identified the person who scaled an airport fence Friday night.
this surveillance video shows the person then wandering over to the runway and walking across it.
Authorities say the plane with more than 230 people on board hit the person at high speed.
The impact sparking an engine fire, filling the cabin with smoke, forcing the pilots to slam on the brakes and abort takeoff.
Passengers seen evacuating the plane using those emergency slides, but some say they were stuck in the cabin for several minutes as it filled with the smoke.
The FAA and NTSB are investigating.
Taking a live look outside now with a view of downtown Raleigh from our Pendo Sky Cam at 301 Hillsborough Street.
We had a beautiful Mother's Day, but temperature definitely changing today.
It is, yeah, a lot cooler today.
Clouds, it's some rain, but it's not what we need.
I'm kind of focused more on Wednesday evening of that being the potential.
But right now looks good.
A couple clouds there on the sky.
We're going to see these clouds increasing.
But a nice morning to get out if you want to take a walk or a jog, it'll be dry as we go throughout the morning.
It's really hit or miss later today that we're going to get some showers.
Mainly north and also on the sand hills.
A lot of us don't get anything at all.
Wet Wednesday? Well, probably after sunset.
In the evening hours, daytime is likely going to be dry.
Next weekend, yeah, we're going to be heating up.
Get ready. We're going to see a stretch of numbers probably close to 90 for a few days.
And it really heats up.
It starts actually on Saturday, about 87.
After this week is going to be fairly pleasant temperature-wise,
likely in the 70s.
But here comes that front.
This is the one I'm focused on for Wednesday evening to overnight. There's going to be a band of rain that moves in. And WPC has as at around a half inch to three quarters of an inch. Might be a little bullish, but I'll take it anything we can get because this event today is going to be incredibly light, probably less than a tenth of an inch. 60s out there this morning, mainly cloudy skies will increase that slightly maybe a midday getting a sprinkler or a spotty little shower and that's it. There's the organized rain up in our northern counties as we get closer to five.
P.m. And notice a lot of us kind of missing out on rain. Maybe the triangle gets a spotty light shower this evening and that's it. If you look at all the models for R.D.U. It's not showing much at all at all. So this is much to do about nothing as far as the type of beneficial rain that we need. 55 into North Hills right now. Not much of a breeze at all out there. It's pleasant to start today with 58 in Oxford, 57 into Burlington and Sanford to touch cooler at 51 degrees. That evening walk again around the triangle likely dry, but it turns cool.
still a little bit of a north breeze out there, so you probably want a light jacket if you're out later on for this evening.
Notice 74 on Tuesday looks good after a chilly start to the day, and then Wednesday here comes that front.
It's late in the day in the evening. We anticipate getting some scattered showers and thunderstorms around.
Upper 60s to near 70 in the triangle, only 60 in Roxborough, big change there, and will be in the 70s down in the sandals.
Not everyone gets rain today. I think it's going to be scattered in the areas that do get rain.
folks, it's going to be light. And then later on tonight, look at the temperatures. 41 Rocksboro,
46 in the Raleigh and Fayetteville at 48 degrees. Decreasing clouds overnight. There could be some
clouds early in the day tomorrow, but a lot of sunshine and temperatures will be in the 70s.
It's Wednesday evening is more likely when we get the rain and maybe some thunderstorms.
Little cooler on Thursday. Nice finish to the work week Friday and then get ready, Anna.
We're heating up as we head into the weekend. You know I love to hear that, Steve. Things on the roads also look good for your
Monday morning commute. You can see there's no crashes you need to worry about. Also, just a lot of
green. So things are moving nicely. Let's take a live look outside at the DOT cameras.
This is 885 and TW. Alexander. We'll definitely see some cars on the road, but so far everyone's still
able to go that posted speed limit. A major pop star files a lawsuit against Samsung just ahead of
