Starting point is 00:00:01 Right now, live coverage from your local news leader, breaking stories from overnight and this morning, and your first alert forecast. Here's what's happening where you live. This is ABC 11 eyewitness news. Friday, 5 a.m., good morning. Carolina, welcome on this Friday, October the 16th. I'm Joel Brown. And I'm Anna Rivera. Thanks so much for joining us today. This morning on eyewitness news, a community in morning after a school shooting, claimed the lives of at least three children and a teacher. We've got new details on the victims and we'll tell you how the shooting unfolded. It's a somber day in the Bull City. The community invited to honor the fallen firefighter. Andrew Brooks, what you need to know before you visit his memorial services.
Starting point is 00:00:41 It's day two of early voting in North Carolina. We'll show you a new tool available to help you plan when to cast your ballot. 5 o'clock. End of the week. Time for your first check of weather. We'll also do traffic together. Look, it's going to be another pleasant day, a little warm, probably record setting warmth. But then the rain moves in late late and in a cold is that's a big story.
Starting point is 00:01:03 Yeah, big story for the weekend is the big drop in temperatures. Today I would still say shorts and teas for the state fair through the evening hours too. Much cooler this weekend. We're going to have some rain around first part of the day on Saturday too. And then we get into a really nice and pleasant stretch into next week. It's going to feel like fall for sure next week. This morning it's kind of cool still. It's muggy too.
Starting point is 00:01:23 You'll notice that. Temp's in the 60s and we do have some fog out there. It's a bit dense and sponsored. 2. State Fair gates open at 9 this morning. Near 70 degrees, you're going to have a lot of sunshine today once that fog mixes out. Temperatures in the upper 80s. The record today is 86. We're going to break that again at RDU. 75 at 9 tonight. By that time, I do have a 20% chance of rain. But check out all this fog. Dense fog, especially south of the triangle right now, even to the west.
Starting point is 00:01:48 This potential through around 9 o'clock this morning. There's your live look downtown. Low clouds out there, 67 degrees. Winds southeast at 3. So we're warm this morning. Once again, temperature. in the 60s. Again, we have fog, but it's limited overall with the sunshine building through the day. Also, winds building through the day, too. It's going to turn breezy through the afternoon. But tonight, there's that shift. That's the cold front working in. It's going to bring some big changes for the weekend. Friday night football looks good. Some late night showers will be in the 70s as those games wrap up. Here's that cold front just to the west. You can see the big difference in temperatures behind it.
Starting point is 00:02:23 And we're going to see that tomorrow. Fayville State homecoming tomorrow. The Broncos 1.30 kickoff. I think we'll have some showers at kickoff time, 50s on temps, and then as we wrap up the game, still in the 50s and partly cloudy. We'll talk about frost potential for parts of the area this weekend. That's coming up. Weather and traffic together, Anna back to you. Quailan, overall, a quiet start to your Friday morning commute. Quaylin was talking about that fog that we're seeing definitely widespread to the south of the triangle. Let's take a live look outside at the DOT cameras because this is 540 NC 540 at NC 50. And you can see just how dense. that fog is. We're going to keep an eye on that this morning. We are working to confirm a heavy
Starting point is 00:03:03 police presence in Durham right now. Breaking news, one on the scene at Austin and Holloway Street, just after midnight. You can see EMS and fire and police responding. But when we reached out to DPD, they told us no crime was being investigated there. No word yet on any injuries, but follow us on air and online for updates on the story. We are heartbroken. We are horrified. This is the kind of thing hear about in other places and pray that it never happens here. New sound coming into the Breaking News Center from the superintendent of Ben LaPine schools, who along with city officials confirmed an unthinkable tragedy at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon, at least three children and a teacher are dead, plus another child and a
Starting point is 00:03:47 second adult were hurt. Amy Kiley has more on the aftermath. Their feelings is pain and there's hurt. Community members are grieving after a dead. shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Central Oregon Thursday. The deceased at the scene include three children, ages 5, 8, and 11, and one teacher. Ben to police chief, Mike Krantz, says a 7-year-old and a second adult were taken to the hospital. Classes and activities in the area are canceled today, according to the district superintendent. No community should have to do what we're doing right now.
Starting point is 00:04:22 I don't have any words for what this community is feeling right now. I don't think anyone does. We are taking an active shooter call. Grant says a caller reported around 1 o'clock that someone had shot into a vehicle. The chief says the suspect was 16 years old and forced his way inside the building with a long gun. Brand says police arrived on scene about three minutes after that first 911 call. An officer reported that the suspect had been shot by a community member who had seen the suspect enter the school and pursued him into the school and engaged him. We can only imagine,
Starting point is 00:04:59 in our worst imagination, that had that person with a firearm not been there and taken that action, that the fatalities, that the casualties could be worse, that this could have gone on longer. I'm Mimi Kiley, reporting. A sad update to a triple murder in Moore County. We're now learning one of the victims was pregnant. Demetrius Angalus is accused of murdering his mother. stepfather and his niece inside of a home in Pine Bluff last August. New autopsy results released overnight showed 20-year-old Trinity Thomas was pregnant and it just found out days before her death. Agalus initially told authorities he found the victim's dead, but a flock camera caught
Starting point is 00:05:39 his car near the crime scene just minutes before the attack. Happening today, the Bull City begins saying goodbye to one of its bravest. Firefighter Andrew Brooks was killed last week when part of a burning building collapsed on top of them. Visitation is this afternoon and he'll be laid to rest tomorrow. Cindy Bay is live at Station 13 in Durham with the details. Cindy, good morning. Good morning, Anna. And hundreds are expected this weekend to honor Brokes starting with today's visitation. The funeral is Saturday. Brokes was searching for victims last Thursday when the building on Marley Drive collapsed, killing Brooks and injuring two other firefighters. The fire remains under investigation.
Starting point is 00:06:19 Brokes is remembered as a dedicated public servant and a regular at the federal where a bar stool will remain empty in his honor. The bar and other local businesses, including Max Jr. Mini Mini-Mi-Mri-Mart, will host firefighters after Saturday service. We're doing this for the community, so everybody's been really cool. We had a lot of volunteers even offered to come in, help us serve food, stuff like that. Brookes joined the Durham Fire Department last May and served at Station 13. on Tower Company 5. Fire departments across North Carolina continue to pay their respects. And a local firefighter organization has reserved hotel blocks for those traveling to honor him.
Starting point is 00:07:06 Back to you. Yeah, a lot of people will be morning today and tomorrow, so we will stay on top of this story. Cindy, thank you. Early voting is underway and on day one, voters across the triangle lined up to cast their ballots. And now candidates in North Carolina's high stakes U.S. Senate race are calling in some big names back up Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock stumped in the triangle for Democrat Roy Cooper yesterday, arguing North Carolina could decide which party controls the Senate. The path to a Senate majority runs right through the South.
Starting point is 00:07:41 I'm the embodiment of that. I don't think people saw Georgia coming a few years ago, and we know the rest of that story. North Carolina is positioned well to help us get this majority. Republicans are bringing in their own heavy hitter. President Trump returns to North Carolina next week, campaigning in Greenville for Republican Michael Watley. Watley welcoming the help saying, quote, we all know President Trump drives NCGOP turnout better than anyone else. We welcome Trump and Vice President Vance back to NC to campaign anytime.
Starting point is 00:08:15 If you are planning to vote early, the news and observer found wait time trackers for several counties in our area. Polling sites are closed right now, but once they open this morning, You can check the lines before you go. It is 508 new developments on a Franklin County mother killed this week. How she's being remembered as a second suspect is now being charged for her murder. We are one step closer to building a new Amtrak service in the Tarheel state. How big of an investment is coming to grow passenger rail services between Raleigh and Richmond, Virginia.
Starting point is 00:08:44 Good morning, quite. Good morning. A cold front is on the way. It's going to bring some showers tonight, first part of tomorrow, but also a big drop in temperatures. 80s today, 50s tonight, 60s for high. tomorrow. We'll talk more about those changes in my forecast. Right now, the roads look good other than this fog that we're dealing with right now. We're going to keep an eye on that throughout the morning. Now let's take a look at those traffic hotspots brought you by the Fred

Visibilities are down for some spots as low as zero to a quarter mile. We're going to see a lot of
Starting point is 00:10:21 sunshine through the afternoon hours. A big warm up today. Again, record high as possible at RDU. Temperature at 8 o'clock in the 60s by noon, lower 80s, highs today, mid to upper 80s with those winds from the southwest kicking through the afternoon. Late tonight, there's a chance for some spotty rainfall, but I think most high school football games get off with dry conditions, temperatures in the 80s to start, 70s at the finish of those games. Rip current threat is low to moderate today, so Cs stirred up a little bit higher. Check out these temperatures statewide today. 80s, very warm, more of a late, summer feel, but that changes tomorrow with the sweep of a cold front and that's going to bring
Starting point is 00:10:58 showers to the area, but also much colder air, 50s and 60s from the Queen City to the triangle back east, but it will be in the upper 40s tomorrow afternoon. Here's the rain potential tomorrow so it starts off wet. I think we start trailing towards drier weather by early afternoon. We'll talk frost potential for parts of the area Sunday morning and my full forecast. Anna and Joel back to you. Okay, Quaylan, thank you. 50 people were killed in domestic violence, across North Carolina from January through September. That's according to the North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence. And that count doesn't include Rashika Kritup, a Franklin County mom killed this week.
Starting point is 00:11:34 Devon Whaley is charged with her murderer and now a second person is charged with accessory after the fact. Family members tell us that second suspect is Tyrone Krutup, a distant cousin. Crittip and other domestic violence victims were remembered Thursday at the annual stand-up, speak-out, candlelight vigil in Durham. Now advocates and survivors are calling on lawmakers to toughen penalties pointing to repeat offenders and escalating violence. The record of violence is extensive and it is time for us to stop lighting candles and stop calling names and start going down to our state legislation. We have got to get them to make changes that need to be made so these numbers will decrease instead of increase. A reminder, help is
Starting point is 00:12:24 available. The national domestic violence hotline is free, confidential and open 24 hours a day. Call 1-800-799 safe or text start. The word start to 8-8-7-88. It is 514. The work will stretch from just east of I-885 to Wade Avenue. And this is more than your typical resurfacing job. Crews will use a more extensive treatment designed to strengthen the road and help it last longer. Construction is expected to begin later this fall with the project substantially complete by late 2028. In Raleigh, one of the city's bus bus bus-rapid transit construction rolls on. Now some neighbors want New Bern Avenue to get a new name too.
Starting point is 00:14:46 Southeast Raleigh advocates want the stretch from person street to Wapest to Wake Med, renamed for Clarence Lightner, the city's first and only black men. He served from 1973 to 1975. Neighbors along the route met to rally support for the idea. For now, it's only a proposal. No decision has been made. A big step forward for faster trains between Raleigh and Richmond. NCDOT is getting $550 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation for the S-Line
Starting point is 00:15:15 Passenger Rail Project. The S-line turns an existing freight corridor into a more direct passenger route to Richmond, Virginia, cutting more than an hour off the trip. Officials say the work should take about three years. 518 and a live look outside of view at downtown Raleigh from the Pendo Sky Cam. A little fog out there this morning. Many locations, Burlington, down the Sanford, Irwin and Clinton, some dense fog there. Smithfield as well, seeing more fog developing around R&U, too, and spots north and east. Aside from that, skies are clear and we'll have a lot of sunshine today, warming back up into the midtoe upper 80s this afternoon. Well above average, normal high, 73 degrees today. It's going to turn windy as well through the afternoon. Today's winds won't feel so bad coming in. from the south, 20 to 30 miles per hour. But tonight the wind shift as the front moves through and that's gonna bring in that colder flow tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:17:02 Forecast temperatures tonight in the 50s, partly cloudy, some showers developing late tomorrow for the fair. We're gonna have rainfall at the opening of the fair. And then early afternoon, those rain showers will taper, but only in the 50s throughout the day tomorrow, you'll get some late day sunshine. Here's that cold front still to the west.
Starting point is 00:17:19 It's gonna bring in some showers, I think towards nine, 10 o'clock tonight. We'll start to see some scattered light rainfall. takes over most of the area into tomorrow morning. Some locally heavy rain and spots. We'll continue with showers tomorrow morning too. By the afternoon, the rain is tracking out of here towards 2 o'clock, I think east of 95. But chilly air, 50s for temperatures in the afternoon.
Starting point is 00:17:39 And then we dip Sunday morning, mid to upper 30s north. That's where the frost's potential will be, 40s triangle and south Sunday morning.
