This is ABC 11 eyewitness news. Right, time to wake up. Good morning, Carolina. Welcome all this Monday, September 28th. I'm Bianca Holman and for Joel Brown. And I'm Anna Rivera. Thanks so much for joining us today. Breaking this morning, a desperate search for a missing Wake County teen. Everything we know, straight ahead. All by the faith, Hensworthier, we're beginning. today, the jury selection set to begin in a matter of hours. We've got a preview of the high-profile case coming up. And it's a big week for our Stanley Cup champions.

The Carolina hurricane set to give updates today ahead of tomorrow's season opener, plus details on their newly unveiled championship rings. All right is 5 o'clock. Anna, back in the saddle after spending some time with family. Ready to be back. For sure, for sure. You survived that North Easter, girl. Barely.

She came back. I barely survived. Give me out of this rain. Yeah, and we're back to the sunshine. So we're glad you're back and you enjoy some really nice weather. This week warming up, temperatures back to the mid to upper 80s by Wednesday. Today, low 80s, a mix of sun and clouds. Tomorrow, 83.

And then Wednesday, we're up to 87 degrees. Here's a live look into downtown Raleigh. The skies are generally clear right now. We're at 57 degrees. We have dew point temps, low 50s. So it's a little more humid this morning, but it still feels really nice out there. Refreshing air all around. 53 in Clinton. Fayville has come down into the 50s after starting at 60 degrees in the last hour. 50 in Silher City. Still 60 in South Hill and Durham, 57 degrees. That wind, light from the northwest, will continue through the day today. So we'll have a little light breeze from time to time. There are some clouds to the north wrapping around that noreastern. Some of those will start to pivot into our region through the morning and afternoon hours, mainly clear on the way into school, mid to upper 50s, some jackets near 80 degrees on the way home. By that time, partly cloudy skies. Nice east.

Evening in stores, 70s all the way through nine tonight by 10 tonight. We're in the upper 60s. Your first alert as we look ahead, get ready for some near record high temperatures. So just as you thought we were turning to that corner, summer rears its head again. That northeast are still impacting areas around D.C. Up to the New England states, but our coastal impacts are more limited today. You can see how the winds are much lower compared to the weekend even. So some coastal flooding concerns for our southern facing shores along the coast.

I'll have more on that and we'll see some new record highs that's coming up. Right now, weather and to traffic together. Hannah, back to you. Quailan, really quiet on the road's crash count at zero right now. Shouldn't be much that you need to worry about, maybe just some overnight construction waiting for that to clear. Let's take a live look outside at the DOT cameras I-40 and Jones Sausage Road. Traffic starting to fill in. And breaking news in Wake County authorities searching for this missing teen, the sheriff's office asking for help finding 15-year-old Jaden Thompson.

He was last seen on Kennebec Road near Fukuhaverina. He's described as 5-7 with brown hair and blue eyes. Please call officials if you have any information. A high-profile murder trial begins in Durham today. 14 years after Faith Hedgepeth was brutally killed in her Chapel Hill apartment, the case making national headlines after the UNC Underground was found dead in her apartment in 2012. Miguel Salgaro Olivares was eventually arrested nine years later after DNA linked him to the killing. Jury selection begins in a matter of hours.

And our Tamara Scott is live in Durham now. Good morning, Tamara. A lot of eyes on this case. Folks have been waiting. Hey, good morning, Bianca. It's been 14 years since the UNC student was found dead in her apartment. And Miguel Saguilera Olivares is a man who's accused of her murder. He's expected to first face a jury.

And today, that journey begins to find who will ultimately decide his case. So today, jury selection begins here at the Durham County Courthouse. Sagulara Olivares has pleaded not. guilty to killing Hedgebath when she was just 19 years old, when she was found beaten to death inside of her off campus Chapel Hill apartment in 2012. Now for years, the case went unsolved, despite DNA evidence recovered during the investigation. Then in 2021, police say a DNA sample collected after an unrelated traffic stop ultimately matched DNA from the crime scene and he was arrested. Now, nearly five years later, prosecutors and the defense will begin choosing the jury

that will hear that evidence. Retired Superior Court judge Carl Fox says old cases can sometimes take decades to solve when investigators don't initially have enough evidence tying someone to the crime. But it questions, it depends on where the DNA came from, how long it could have been there before it was actually detected and collected. And what are the alternatives, if any, for how it could have gotten there? And the trial is expected to last about four weeks after the jury is selected will be inside this morning during the beginning of that jury selection process and bring you updates throughout the day back to you Tamara thank you happening today a special golf tournament honoring Brooklyn Carol she's the 10 year old who was killed in a boating crash on

Harris Lake last summer Sean coffee is live from McGregor Downs and in Kerry where that event kicks off later today Sean good morning yeah good morning Anna well organizers for today's event say that the proceeds from the fundraiser will go towards supporting safe and sober boating initiatives as well as life-saving community programs here. And it comes just about a month after Quentin Kite pleaded guilty in relation to charges connected with Brooklyn May Carroll's death. Kite admitted in court that he was impaired while operating that boat on Harris Lake last August when he struck and killed Carroll, who was swimming with a different group. Kite faces a minimum of 12 years in prison as part of that plea deal. Proceeds from today's inaugural tournament will also help

launch the Brooklyn May Carroll Foundation's Waterway Trauma Station initiative. which would help provide life-saving care in the case of a similar emergency. And today's event includes everything from a round of golf to other fundraising activities, a helicopter golf ball drop. As well, you can look for more later today on eyewitness news. Well, I've been carrying, Sean coffee, ABC 11, eyewitness news. All right, Sean, thank you. When I was a shooting investigation in southeastern Wake County,

a woman is recovering after being shot Saturday night. It happened on Westbury Lake Drive around 1130. She was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The search for the suspect is still underway. Police have not released any more details. A Fayetteville man now facing charges for allegedly impersonating an officer. Police say around 3.30 yesterday morning, a man dressed as an officer robbed a home on Osceola Drive. Authorities say he knocked on the door before storming in and stealing money.

No injuries were reported. The suspect is being identified as 27-year-old Jaden Boone. He's charged with robbery with a deadly weapon, possession of stolen goods, and impersonating a law enforcement officer. Investigators say the equipment Boone was. was stolen from a stolen from a Fayetteville police officer's home while the officer was away on vacation. More car break-ins across Raleigh,

more than 20 cars were hit and targeted. We've got new details coming up later this hour. The latest on a powerful Northeaster slamming the coast from the outer banks all the way to New England will have updates after the break. Good morning, Quay. We'll see a few clouds from time to time through the morning and afternoon hours with the back edge of that nor'easter. Across the tri-state, 50s and 60s, mainly upper 40s for the Lumberton area right now. Here's a live look from North Hill. Skies are clear. We have dry and quiet conditions along six works bro out there.

Temperatures mid to upper 50s at eight. As we head into lunchtime will be in the 70s with highs north, upper 70s, low to mid 80s, triangle and south today. Statewide, beautiful conditions from the coast to the mountains with highs in the 70s and 80s, but warmer tomorrow. Fable climbs around 86, Wilmington, the mid 80s, lower 80s in Asheville in the afternoon. Conditions continue to improve along the coast. So some minor coastal flooding impacts from around.

Cape lookout down south towards Oak Island. We're tracking that nor'easter, which will weaken significantly by tomorrow. The wave heights will start to diminish around the New England states in the northeast, but those impacts will linger likely through the middle part of the week. As far as rain flows for this month, a deficit climbing for RDU, unfortunately around two and a half inches for the month and over one inch for Fayetteville. They'll see more rain and storms around the four corners today, and that will impact areas back from Denver to Los Angeles, Salt Lake City. 92 in Dallas.

We're going to see some low 90s later this week. I'll have more on that in my 70 forecast. Bianca, back to you. All right, Caelan, we'll see you in a moment. A deadly nor'easter finally weakening this morning. New York, New Jersey all declared states of emergency. As you can see here, some of this video from high tide. They brought dangerous coastal flooding, waves of 16 feet and more were reported off southern

New England and the Jersey shore. And at least one person has died in New York. The storm also caused major travel headaches across the region and Amtrak and airlines were offering travel waivers for some passengers affected by conditions. We're following a terrifying close call. Authorities stopping a possible terror attack at an air base outside of London. It's been used by U.S. forces during the war with Iran. British police arrested several men yesterday morning on suspicion of terror and explosive offenses.

Authorities are now focusing on Iran's possible role in the alleged plot. Friday night lights turning violent in Raleigh, police breaking up fights in the stands, and parking lots during the Millbrook-Rolesville game. What's happening next coming up? Plus, North Carolina Senator Tom Tillis weighing in on the midterms as the fight to fill his seat intensifies. What he is to say coming up later this hour. 515 now. In Wake County, the man charged in a crash that killed a child set to face a judge today. 40-year-old Germain Deans facing several charges. Troopers say he was driving an SUV when it hit a tree on Highway 96 near Doyle Road earlier this month. A 10-year-old died at the scene. Two other young kids and a woman were seriously hurt. The Data Center debate escalating in Fayetteville this week. Officials want to hear from you about the proposed regulations. So they're set for this Wednesday, September 30th. It's going to be the first one will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at College Lakes Recreation Center.

The second session is from 2 to 4 at Massey Hill Recreation Center. And the final session will be at Clifdale Recreation Center from 6 to 8 p.m. City Council is again. expected to release the proposed ordinance next month. There's an easy way to avoid the traffic if you're heading to the state fair this year. Go Raleigh is running an express shuttled bus from Dix Park right to the main gate. Rides cost just $5 round trip. Buses run every 30 minutes during the fair from 8.30 in the morning until closing. The state fair kicks off Thursday, October 15.

Our Stanley Cup champions gearing up for a big week. Their first home game of this season is tomorrow and today general manager Eric Tulski will speak to ahead of the puck drop. And so the canes will likely practice before and will be there for all the action at the Lenovo Center. Meanwhile, the canes are celebrating their Stanley Cup championship win

with some new bling. The team unveiled the 2026 Stanley Cup championship ring. The rings were designed and created by luxury jeweler Jason of Beverly Hills. Each ring featuring nearly 900 individually set stones, including 9.8 carrots of white diamonds and 1.4 carers of natural red, rubies. The little details on the rings include each player's signature and a removable

championship puck pendant that shows Stormy the Cain's mascot when taken off. That's a lot of bling. I'm not mad at it. Not at all. They definitely earned that. And you know what I feel like I earned some sunshine. Yes. You got some of us.

Anna had to deal with that nasty weather up north. It was so bad. In the meantime here, it was beautiful. I was looking at our security cameras like, this weekend was perfect. No humidity, light breeze. Yeah, the exception, of course, was the coast, but those impacts are just lingering at this point. Few clouds today still seasonably warm, so we'll have some nice makeup weather for Anna. Heating up this week, flirting with 90 degrees later this week will be dry through the week,

but I do bring back in some weekend showers with our next front, and certainly we need the rainfall. Here's a live look downtown, serene conditions. Another cool start. Temperatures in the 50s around the triangle, 52 in Roxborough, Sanford 51, Goldsboro, mid-50s, Fayetteville, 57 degrees. Light wind from the north. Overall this morning, we'll pick that breeze up a little bit later today. We do have a few clouds working into our I-85 corridor, also to the north into Mecklenburg County.

We'll see a few clouds from time to time, but still bright skies overall. 64 degrees as we head into 9 o'clock lunchtime, mid-70. So you can do lunch outside. Humidity stays low this afternoon, 79 degrees at 3 and partly cloudy. We'll keep those clouds late tonight, and then as we head into the overnight hours, we'll start to see some breaks. mid-50s just after 3 o'clock this morning. So that nor'easter is still to the north with the impacts becoming more diminished later today.

But of course, we're looking at so rainfall locally heavy in spots from New York City to the New England states. We're on the backside of that low, so the air is sinking. And that's why we're enjoying some really nice weather here at home. So looking at the afternoon, Heisner, 80 degrees, a mix of sun and clouds. You can see some of the clouds from that low working in. Tuesday, partly cloudy skies, a little bit warmer as a low pools away. High pressure starts to build in from the Ohio. And then ultimately that high shifts offshore by mid weeks.

So we'll see that warming trend continuing. So some minor coastal flooding concerns from Surf City down towards Oak Island and Myrtle Beach this afternoon and evening, especially around high tide. But as we head into the second half of the week, temperatures climb near records. Record high Wednesday is 89 would be around 87. Thursday's record is 90 will be close 90 degrees. And then Friday looking at temperatures in the low to mid 90s, the record is 96 set in 2019. So a hot start. October your rain potential as I mentioned it increases for the weekend with the

cold front phase a depression right now we do have this disturbance north of Fay that has a medium shot to develop both of those in open waters to no impacts to land mid to upper 70s north today 80s for the triangle and to point south this afternoon we'll have clouds early with some clearing late 50s into early tomorrow morning 83 the high tomorrow afternoon with some great conditions ahead of the Keynes game so your tailgate looks wonderful 87 Wednesday I October 1st is Thursday. It's going to feel more like June. High's near 90. 91 Friday with near record highs once again. And then we start cooling down this weekend with that front. Around 80 on Saturday. Some models have us a bit warmer, but I think the front works in a bit sooner.

Have showers for Saturday and some light rain continuing Sunday. The high still 75 degrees. Weather and traffic together. Anna, back to you. Quailan crash counts still at zero right now. ABC, Sophie Flay with this morning's Techbytes. In today's Techbytes, a researcher says AI agents hammered a United Nations website. He says agents likely tied to OpenAI hit the UN's trade statistics site 16,000 times, working to access the data, causing security concerns, even though the data was public. OpenAI has not commented. Next, backlash against the new Instagram Plus feature. It lets you extend 24-hour stories and pushes them to the top of users' feeds. and it allows viewers to hide their actions from others.

Critics say it exploits digital addiction. And this new mask may look like a nicer version of Batman's nemesis Bain, but it actually measures your oxygen intake and how much carbon dioxide you breathe out. Taylor Swift also received the inaugural artist director honors becoming the most awarded artist in VMA history. Previously, she was tied with Beyonce for the title with 30 VMAs each. The new award is meant to recognize artists who work behind the camera
