See what's happening this instant.
ABC 11 eyewitness news starts right now.
Good Sunday evening, everyone.
Thanks so much for joining us tonight at 6.
I'm Dewan Hoggard.
So glad to have you.
A cloudy and cool day across the area with a big drop in temperatures today
after a stretch of record heat.
We saw a few showers, but not enough to help with those drought conditions
we've been dealing with for that.
We turn things over to meteorologist,
Cruz.
Cruise, you've been tracking this for a while.
The drought still continues.
I'm looking at this map behind you.
Absolutely. So this map here is showing the percent of normal compared to what we would normally see in a month. So so far this month, we've only gotten 5 percent of what we would normally get for rainfall and for areas across central North Carolina. Now in eastern North Carolina, there's been a little bit more rain there, but once again, not really much to write home about it. It's been bone dry out there, and today we just had a few little sprinkles or light showers across the region. For this evening, you'll notice it's going to be a bit chilly outside, a bit breezy at times as well, walking.
the dog so expect to possibly need a light jacket heading outside tonight and if you don't need one
tonight you will tomorrow morning as tipters drop into the upper 30s low 40s across the region with a
mostly clear sky in the overnight hours so parents your kiddos they'll probably want the jacket
heading to the bus stop early tomorrow coming home it'll be seasonable or at least close to
seasonable tipters will be in the upper 60s to ride around 70 degrees with a partly cloudy sky
we're going to warm up again through the middle of the week we'll talk about those details coming up
forecast. Do on. Hi, Chris, we'll see you again shortly. Well, as extreme drought conditions
continue tonight, water restrictions are set to begin tomorrow for people in Raleigh. Now,
these restrictions mainly involve the use of outdoor water systems like sprinklers that you have at
home. So homes with even an odd-numbered addresses must water lawns on separate days of the week.
We have our time, George, joining us live tonight at Falls Lake. Now, Tom, what more can you share
with us just about this first phase of the restrictions here? Yeah, it all starts tomorrow. And when you
at what's going on here at Falls Lake, which supplies water for Raleigh water. You can see
a little bit of what we're talking about right here. I want to step out of the way and kind of
show you right here. You can see those guys out there fishing. Look how far that shoreline is jutting
out. That is a lot lower than it would normally be at this time. And this is exactly why,
as we continue to have these drought conditions, why out of an abundance of caution,
they're putting these restrictions in effect. Obviously there's still enough water,
but they want to make sure as we head into the summer that that stays the case. So here's what
you need to know. We are officially in
stage one. So that means that automatic sprinklers and manual sprinklers, things that you might
use for your yard can only be used between midnight and 10 a.m. Also, when it comes to watering your lawn,
it depends on whether you have an odd numbered address for Tuesdays or even numbers addresses for
Wednesdays. And this also is going to impact water systems indoors as well. Restaurants will
only be serving up tap water on request. And at hotels, guests that are saying more than one night
will be asked to reuse their towels and bed sheets. All again, to preserve.
water. And we talked with some crews from Raleigh water. They say this drought that we are
seeing right now is unlike anything they've seen. We're responding to an ongoing drought,
and this drought is highly unusual in that it really started in the winter. So we had a very dry
winter and a very dry spring, which to our records has never really happened before. So
based on over 100 years of records, we can say that Falls Lake would have refilled by April 1st
every year except this year. So it is a really unusual
drought. Yeah, and these water levels already come after what we're already seeing right now with those
dry conditions out there. As it stands, there already is a burn ban that's in effect because of those
dry conditions. And again, when it comes to the water situation, those restrictions in effect
starting tomorrow for Raleigh Water reporting live. Tom George, ABC 11, I wouldn't news.
All right, Tom again, thanks so much. Also developing at this hour in Raleigh, police releasing new
details about a deadly shooting that happened Saturday night in the Walnut Trace neighborhood.
Police say 36-year-old Tyrone Van Dyke was shot around 8 o'clock.
He was taken to the hospital where he later died.
The shooter, 42-year-old Dante Young was arrested and found with a gun that police believe was used in that shooting.
Young has since been charged with murder.
Police say the two knew each other and were involved in an altercation before the shooting.
In Durham, a 17-year-old boy is dead after being hit and killed Saturday evening.
Police say it happened just before 9 o'clock at the intersection of Cole Mill Road and West Windham Lane.
Investigators say the teen was riding a bike when he was hit by a car on coal mill road.
Police have not released any details about the teen or the driver involved.
And at this hour, we're still working to learn if any charges will be filed.
Well, power is now restored in the Briar Creek area after a morning outage left at 3,000 customers in the dark.
But as Bianca Holman shows us, one congregation didn't let the lack of electricity stop their Sunday service.
It's Sunday service at Victoria Praise Fellowship Church of God in Christ in Durham.
But halfway through the early first service, the unexpected.
The lights went out.
We are very musical and lively church.
We had to go to an acapello.
Our praise and worship kept singing and I ministered.
And normally I have a PA system and we have lights and all of that went out.
Pastor Nichols tells eyewitness news the congregation had to get creative.
So we opened the curtains and.
the sanctuary. Lights came in from the sun and I just ministered, talked and projected my voice.
Members even using their phones to help light the room. No power, but we do have the power of God.
And we really did feel his presence, even though we didn't have our electrical power, but we still felt God's
presence during the service. But then let there be light. Whether we in the light or the dark,
we have the light of Jesus.

Well, now to the war with Iran tonight,
President Donald Trump is commenting on negotiations between the two countries.
saying an agreement will happen one way or another.
Here's ABC, Selina Wang, in Washington for us tonight with what the president is now saying.
President Trump reacting to the war with Iran amid negotiations and mixed messages over who has control over the Strait of Hormuz.
The U.S. has a blockade in place, but Iran says its Navy controls the passage.
On Saturday, less than 24 hours after the president said the waterway was completely open,
two ships came under fire as they tried to pass through it, according to UK maritime monitors.
audio obtained by ABC News capturing a radio message sent by an Indian flagged oil tanker.
Sapa Navy, this is Motor Deng a Sunmar Hedalt.
You gave me clearance to go.
My name second on your list.
You gave me clearance to go.
You are fighting now.
Let me turn back.
President Trump on social media Sunday saying the U.S.
forcibly seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship near the strait that tried to pass the naval blockade.
Iran has yet to respond.
The president also announcing his representatives will be heading to Islamabad, Pakistan,
for another round of peace talks on Monday.
Adding attacks on Iran may continue if an agreement is not reached by Wednesday when the ceasefire
between the two countries expires.
The outcome of these talks will be incredibly consequential.
And as the president is stated, he isn't prepared to escalate to de-escalate.
On social media, the president's saying if Iran does not take the U.S. deal, quote,
the United States is going to knock out every single power plant and every single bridge in Iran.
Well, they said they want to escalate to de-escalate. They've escalated to devastation.
Media outlets affiliated with Iran's Revolutionary Guard citing unnamed sources say Tehran is not planning
to take part in a second round of talks as long as the blockade remains and if Vice President
J.D. Vance is not present. White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt said the vice president
would accompany special envoy Steve Whitkoff and Jared Kushner,
the president's son-in-law to Islamabad Pakistan,
for the second round of talks.
Selina Wang, ABC News, Washington.
All right, Selena, many thanks.
Also here in the Triangle, I know that guy there.
That's the annual Earth Day Festival held in downtown Durham,
put on by the Parks and Rec Department.
The event just wrapped up not too long ago over at Durham Central Park.
There was plenty of live music, activities for families there, vendors,
and an Earth Day parade, and you saw them just a few moments ago, our very own Cruz Medina served as the MC.
All right, so Cruz is joining us now.
And I mean, if you had to choose between yesterday when we were in the 90s or today, when it was much cooler, which one would you have picked for today?
I think that's an easy choice for me, and it would have been yesterday.
Yeah. You know, I had like a little jacket on today.
Yeah.
It was a bit chilly.
The wind was blowing and some areas saw some rain earlier today.
But we've seen things get a little better since the second half of the day.
So yes, it's going to be a chilly evening ahead and it'll be a chilly morning tomorrow.
Tipters could be in the 30s for some of you, low 40s for the rest of us, but we'll get some nice temperatures early in the week.
Tipters right around 70 degrees for Monday and Tuesday and then toward the middle and end of the week.
If you prefer it warmer, kind of like it was to start the weekend.
We've got some 80s back in the forecast as we go Wednesday into next weekend as well.
So for this evening, as the clouds start to clear here within the next few hours, we might get a nice,
sunset out of this. For a walk this evening, though, expected to be a bit chilly with those
tipgers in the 60s. Eventually tonight, again, we're going to cool down significantly once these
clouds depart the region. So winds are out of the northwest now as the front moved through earlier
today. And so that's going to help to drive down the tipters tonight too. Up for 30s, low 40s
as you step out the door tomorrow, you at least get a lot of sunshine in the morning. So a nice
start to the day despite it being chilly. Then for the afternoon, we will have some clouds
moving through. We'll call it partly cloudy in the afternoon. And tipgers should top out right.
near 70 degrees and for those of you who don't make it to 70, you'll at least be in the upper 60s.
So tomorrow's a dry day. We've been talking about these drought conditions. We don't have
any impressive rain chances over the next seven days, but there could be some rain late next weekend.
So right now that chance of rain is 40% on Sunday and we could really use it as our local lakes,
rivers, they're struggling. Check out Falls Lake, almost three feet below full pool.
We could really use some rain. We're going to get it.
it's just a matter of when, right? And so this week, we've got those water restrictions take
in effect. Please heed those and know that with all of this dry weather, we're probably going to see
the drop conditions worsen before they get better. So 80s from Wednesday all the way through
next weekend and of course we'll be crossing our fingers hoping that that rain pays us to visit next
Sunday. Duwan, back to you. All right, Cruz. Many thanks. Well, now to the NHL playoffs,
the Canes winning two to nothing to take game one against the Ottawa senators last night. Well, game two,
tomorrow night at 7.30 there at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh.
And as the games continue their playoff run, sports anchor Trayvon Miles was able to sit down one-on-one
with Kane's defenseman Kiannre Miller, who says the team's resolve in depth is what keeps them going.
You look at every position, you guys, it seems like you guys are loaded.
What is it about this team that you see is special?
I mean, I think you saw the spurts of it all the season.
I think this team is so deep.
I think we have, like you said, I mean, we had a number of injuries this year that guys went down and guys just stepping up when they needed to do.
I think that speaks a lot to this organization and the success they've been able to build over the years.
Obviously, like you said, you never want to see those injuries pop up throughout a year.
But, I mean, for us to still have this type of success under that type of –
stress on the team is quite amazing.
That was Trayvon Miles here with that report with key defenseman, Keandre Miller there.
We will continue to follow the cane throughout the playoffs.
Again, game two tomorrow night at 730 there, Lenovo.
That's going to do it for this half hour again.
Thank you so much for watching.
We'll see you later on tonight for eyewitness News at 11.
Have great night.
