Starting point is 00:00:01 Right now, live coverage from your local news leader, investigating new information tonight, and your first alert forecast. Here's what's happening where you live. This is ABC 11 eyewitness news. All right now at 6th and another cold day across the triangle. Things in Raleigh, Durham, and Fayetteville, as well as Kerry, are all looking clear at this hour. But if you've been outside any time today, then you certainly know and you can feel that chill in the air. You're watching Outwinness News at 6 tonight. Thanks for joining us on this Sunday.
Starting point is 00:00:34 I'm Dwan Hoggard. We do start these next 30 minutes together talking first alert weather, the Arctic air, sitting around today and frigid nights, well, that they're up ahead. But a warm up, thankfully, it's on the way. For that, we turn to meteorologist Cruz. Medina Cruz. It's going to be another cold start to the week, but you did say a short while ago, we could see some milder temperature, right?
Starting point is 00:00:52 Yeah, we're expecting much milder temperatures by the time that we get into the middle of the week. And I feel like this is going to be a refreshing change of pace for most people, especially those that aren't a fan of winter like myself. It has been a brutal stretch over the past, at least eight days, but even beyond what you're saying here, this is just what we've seen so far this month. So tipters have been much below average each day. Today, only getting to 32 in Raleigh, we were 22 degrees below our average. But hold on.
Starting point is 00:01:17 Tipters are going to start to get better in the next few days, so still chilly tomorrow. But hey, it's warmer than anything we have this weekend. Tipters were in the 30s all weekend. 40 is expected for tomorrow with sunshine. And then look at that. 64 degrees on Tuesday. That's the pick of the week. That's the day you want to make some plans to get outside.
Starting point is 00:01:35 But by Wednesday, even though it's still mild, we do reintroduce rain chances back in the forecast. And we've got more of those for next weekend as well. Now, as we take a look at this evening, we're already in the 30s and we're dropping into the 20s within the next hours. So if you're firing up the grill ahead of the big game tonight, just though it's going to be chilly out there. You're going to want a winter jacket, maybe a few layers on you.
Starting point is 00:01:54 And by tomorrow morning, you'll want to take that same advice. The jackets are necessary for tomorrow. We start out in the teens for the second day in a row. Tipters will only reach the low 20s in areas like the sandhills. But by the afternoon, we start to see those tipters jumping above freezing. There's still some snow piles out there. I think we could see more of that melting tomorrow as tipters reach the upper 30s, low 40s across the region.
Starting point is 00:02:16 And once again, this is just the start of those improvements in the forecast. Tipters get much warmer through the middle of the week and then come back down through the end of the week with those rain chances. We'll be talking more about that coming up in your. seven-day forecast. Duwant. I accrues, many thanks. Remember, you can download the ABC 11 mobile app if you haven't already done so. It's a great way for you to stay up to date. With the latest watches and warnings, you can also check the Doppler net and the seven-day
Starting point is 00:02:39 forecast at any time. Well, developing right now in Fayetteville, we're working to learn more about a fire on Ramsey Street. It happened at Fayetteville moving in storage near Law Road. All lanes of Ramsey Street were shut down as Cruz battle the flames. The road has since been reopened. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. of the fire is still under investigation.
Starting point is 00:03:00 Also new tonight, a woman is dead after an overnight shooting in a parking lot in Roanoke Rapids. Police say they were called to the parking lot of the Kirkwood Adams Civic Center at the intersection of 11th in Hamilton Streets just after midnight for reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they saw Willie Holmes running away from the scene and the woman Priscilla Key with the gunshot wound. They believe Key while she was having some type of argument with Holmes. Key was taken to the hospital where she died from her injuries. Holmes was found a few blocks away with the gun.
Starting point is 00:03:30 He was arrested and charged with murder. He's being held at the Halifax County Detention Center tonight under no bond. We're now in the Johnston County this evening where dozens of people gathered for an anti-ice rally calling for ice out for good. The group protesting against immigration operations and the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Priddy. It's got to be like what, 20 degrees out here and all these people are out here protesting against Trump's regime and the cruelty that ICE is doing. So yeah, I've seen a lot of support, you know. This is a deep red south, you know.
Starting point is 00:04:08 But you've got people out here and when they had the No King's protest, there's thousands out. So it's happening, it's changing. The event was held at Clayton Town Square on West Main Street. And just last week, the border czar announced 700 Homeland Security employees. are withdrawing from Minneapolis immediately. Tom Homan says about 2,000 will remain in the area. Well, tonight UNC Chapel Hill is facing a pretty hefty fine after fans stormed the court following last night's winning shot, game winning shot, against Duke. Well, this video here is showing the moment people ran to the court after Seth Trimble hit this buzzer beater for the win.
Starting point is 00:04:48 The ACC announcing today that UNC has been fined $50,000 for a violation of the league's event security policy. at the conclusion of last night's game. The conference's event security policy is designed to protect the safety and well-being of all student athletes, coaches, officials, and even fans. In accordance with ACC policy, North Carolina will incur a fine of $50,000 for their first offense. On Carolina Athletics Department responding to that fine tonight saying in part, we accept the ACC's fine for having unauthorized people on the court before Duke and the officials could completely clear the floor on Saturday. They went on to say they reviewed the video and believed they followed their protocols to get Duke's players and bench personnel and game officials off the floor safely. Well, it's Super Bowl Sunday today, and this is the seed in California there at Levi Stadium, and in less than 30 minutes, Super Bowl 60 is set to kick off.
Starting point is 00:05:44 The Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots facing off for the Lombardi Trophy. And there's a few players, even with ties to North Carolina playing in this year's game, including Patriots, quarterback and Drake quarterback Drake May who played for UNC Chapel Hill. Tom George joining us live this evening in Raleigh where, look, you already admitted you are a Patriots fan yourself, so you're talking with your other peers there about all the excitement, but don't forget the CL Seahawks. They want to spoil your fun. Yeah, you know, I am, Dewan, and who would have thought the past would have been in the
Starting point is 00:06:17 Super Bowl this year? But here we are, they're pretty excited here at the Brickhouse in Raleigh. Of course, there's a lot of transplants from up north here in North Carolina. So look at this crowd. They were kind of joking earlier. It's almost like the unofficial embassy of New England down here in North Carolina. But what makes this year even more special, of course, is Drake May, a tar heel. Now leading the way, leading the Patriots to the Super Bowl,
Starting point is 00:06:43 potentially with the chance to become the youngest quarterback to win a Super Bowl ever. And for the fans here, they say it's been really special to watch this team grow. with Drake May in such a short amount of time. It's ironic that, you know, Drake May from North Carolina is the one that's going to take us to our next Super Bowl, hopefully one of many. Good Lord, he's only 23 years old,
Starting point is 00:07:04 and look at what he's doing. I mean, I love the fact that he's a North Carolanian boy and he have that connection, but more so I just appreciate just the type of player he is. And Trish, you just heard from just there. She said her Boston accent just started slipping out when she was here with the crowd. But a lot of people excited right here. I want to kind of show you just how big this crowd is here, of course, excited the next 30 minutes for kickoff here at the Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:07:40 See a lot of fans here. And actually the manager is a Seahawks fan. So he's a little bit outnumbered. But obviously a lot of excitement out here. Of course, with Drake May representing UNC. They have assigned football from him here as well. So a lot of excited Pats fans here, including myself. So hopefully we'll have some good luck here tonight as kickoff is going to be in about half an hour to one.
Starting point is 00:08:06 All right, Tom, live for us tonight at Super Bowl 60 is just minutes away from kickoff. Thanks so much, Tom. And Drake May isn't the only familiar face playing for the Patriots tonight. The Pats also have another Tar Hill and two former Wolfpack players there on their Iraq. Meanwhile, the Seahawks have seven players with ties to North Carolina, including former UNC, Duke, and NC State athletes there. Well, still ahead, it's now been one week since Nathie Guthrie went missing in the middle of the night. The latest in that investigation this evening, as her family continues their plea for her safe return. Everyone needs help with something.

Well, it's been one week after police say Nancy Guthrie, the mother of today's show host, Savannah Guthrie, was abducted her home in the dark of night. The 84-year-old now appearing on billboards in Phoenix, El Paso, San Antonio, and even as far away as Houston as investigators hope for new leads. Tonight here's ABC's Alex Stone with the latest on the investigation. It has now been one week since Nancy Guthrie did not show up for church and her family reported her missing. Savannah and her siblings releasing another emotional
Starting point is 00:10:12 Instagram post on Saturday evening. We received your message and we understand. We beg you now to return our mother to us so that we can celebrate with her. This is the only way we will have peace. This is very valuable to us and we will pay. Law enforcement sources told ABC News that message is the same one received by a Tucson television station on Friday. The FBI and Pima County Sheriff's Department said they had been analyzing it, but the sources said they had not determined its authenticity. An earlier also unverified message included a deadline of tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:10:52 The release of the short message by the Guthrie family was very strategic. My guess is they had hosties negotiators working with them as far as wording. It also tells the bad guys that we are serious about this, and maybe most importantly for the bad guys, that we're going to pay. Investigators have been focusing on a 45-minute period from the time a doorbell camera was disconnected, a possible intruder was detected inside, and Nancy Guthrie's pacemaker disconnected from her phone. The latest plea from the family coming after a day with no new investigative leads. The sheriff telling ABC's Aaron Kuterski, he continues to hold out hope she will be found alive.
Starting point is 00:11:34 She's out there. We're going to find her. We have to, we have to operate from that position. The sheriff's department says there are no suspects, no vehicles identified as being connected, no video and no proof. the 84-year-old who's in fragile health is alive. Alex Stone, ABC News, Los Angeles. Well, now let's check in with Lindsay Davis at ABC News headquarters in New York City for a preview. What's coming up next on World News Tonight. Coming up, late developments in the search for Nancy Guthrie, the mother of today host Savannah Guthrie. A dangerous Arctic blast slams the east with some of the coldest temperatures in decades.
Starting point is 00:12:11 An American skier, Lindsay Vaughn's winter games come to a heartbreaking end. All right, Lindsay, we'll see you shortly. Up next, early voting for the March primary elections kicks off this week. After the break, we'll tell you where you can cast your ballot. Investing is all about the future. So what do you think's going to happen? Bitcoin is sort of inevitable at this point. I think it would come down to precious metals.
Starting point is 00:12:37 I hope we don't go cashless. I would say land is a safe investment. Technology companies. Solar energy. Robotic pollinators might be a thing. A wrestler to face a robot. That will have to happen. So whatever you think is going to happen in the future, you can invest in it at WealthSimple.
Starting point is 00:12:55 Start now at WealthSimple.com. Amazon presents Jamal versus the Shih Tzu. Descending from the gray wolf, shih Tzu's live by their own untamed primal code of not giving a single Shih Tzu. But Jamal shopped on Amazon and bought dog treats, chew toys, and 32 ounces of furses of carpet cleaner. Hey, Jamal, you've been promoted to pack leader. Save the every day with deals from Amazon. And if you did not register, you can still do so during early voting and same-day registrations, which begins this Thursday. Early voting runs through Saturday, February 28th at 3 in the afternoon. Starting point is 00:13:44 12 early voting sites will be available. The locations are here on your screen. The sites are open from o'clock of the morning to 7.30 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays. And in Durham, eight early voting sites will be available. They are also listed here on your screen. Hours are similar to Wake County early voting, except for Sundays. Polling sites are only open from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Durham County. And here's a look at these seven early voting sites in and around Comberland County. It is important to note that voters will only have one Sunday to vote early in Cumberland County. That is next. Sunday, February the 15th from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. No early voting sites will be open Saturday and Sunday, February 21st and 22nd.
Starting point is 00:14:29 And new tonight this weekend, a special event was held in Southern Wake County in honor of American Heart Month. The Feed Your Heart, Feed Your Soul, Go Red Luncheon was sponsored by the Western Wake alumni chapter of Delta Sigma Data Incorporated. Presenders from both Duke Health and Wake Med were there to educate attendees. ABC's very own Trayvon Miles served as the Master of Ceremonies as dozens of women came together to discuss heart health, prevention, education, and empowerment. All right. So let's go ahead and talk all things weather right now. Just a really cold one. I mean, my kids, they're looking outside like, I want to get them off the iPads and go outside to play. But it's also like, you know, 20s, 30s, 40s, just way too cold for them. Yeah, they got to be like bundled up multiple layers at that point, right? And it's not as fun to be outside. But I actually had a teacher ask. me about that earlier. She said, wait, 40s. She said, can I get my kids outside tomorrow? I'm like, yeah, they just got to be bundled up. And that's just the start of the warm up.
Starting point is 00:15:23 So it gets better from there. I think the kids are still going to want at least a light jacket through the middle of the week. But hey, other than tomorrow morning, starting out in the teens and the 40s for the afternoon. We've got 60s on the way for Tuesday and Wednesday. And then toward the back half of the week, those tipters start coming down again. So you really got to make the most of those 60s while we have them. And next weekend is looking pretty wet as those tipters come down. So let's start there. I know it's all the way next We're barely at Sunday. You're like, why are you showing us something next weekend already?
Starting point is 00:15:50 Well, if you're planning ahead for Valentine's Day, that's a pretty popular holiday. People like to go out, to eat, and things of that sort. So it could be pretty wet for the second half of the day on Saturday. That could also continue into Sunday. And we'll recap that here in the seven day in just a moment. But for this evening, no wet conditions expected. If anything, we've got the clouds clearing the region right now. And with a north wind in place and the clouds clearing tonight, temperatures are going all the way down into the teens.
Starting point is 00:16:16 the time that you wake up tomorrow morning. So unless you're in the sand hills, those will be the only spots starting out in the 20s. We all have sunshine, but it's going to be cold again. And then for the afternoon, even though it's milder than what we had this weekend, obviously 40s are still pretty chilly. So a few clouds move in the second half of the day. We could have a few around overnight tomorrow as well. But into Tuesday afternoon, look at this. Our winds come out of the southwest, and that's coming from a warmer air mass. So temperatures will push well into the 60s across the region. And that'll be one of our first above average days that we've had in several weeks at this point. So back to tomorrow, it's cold, but it's at least an improvement.
Starting point is 00:16:53 So this is just the start of that warm up. We'll see it continue getting warmer through the middle of the week, and that's as high pressure slides to our south. So that's what's going to bring our winds out of the southwest. And good news, that'll last into Wednesday as well. But Wednesday, we do have a chance of showers, especially for the second half of the day as the front comes through, and that front's going to be what cools us down to the back half of the week.
Starting point is 00:17:14 Now if you're just joining us, here's a picture of downtown Raleigh, a live picture. We've got just a few fair weather clouds out there. So with the mainly clear sky, temperatures have already cooled into the lower half of the 30s right now. By the time you wake up tomorrow, once again, some teens expected. It'll be coldest across that northern tier. So Roxborough and Roanoke Rapids at 13, 14 up in Henderson, but 18 in Raleigh and 22 in Fayetteville. The afternoon is mostly sunny. Tipters will range from the low 40s across the north to mid-40s down in the 60s down in the
Starting point is 00:17:44 sand hills and from there the warm up begin so like I said you got to make the most of it those mid-60s on Tuesday are going to feel greats but they come down pretty quickly by Thursday even though we're not tracking rain chances then we're in the low 50s then we've got 40s for Friday could have a late day shower better chance of rain comes through the second half of Saturday which is valentine's day and then low 50s by the time we get into Sunday but still looking pretty wet so if you're planning ahead you're like Cruz how do I plan my week just know at some point next weekend you're going to need that umbrella. Just bring everything out of the closet. Yeah, just you might as well. You'll need it for, we've got all the seasons. Maybe even the shorts if you're just feeling like
Starting point is 00:18:22 that. I saw it on Tuesday with shorts today. It's just crazy. Yeah. Thanks, Cruz. You got it. All right. Let's go ahead and get over to Kate Rogers. And what a weekend you're having. I mean, first there's the court storming. Now it is your Patriots and the Super Bowl. I mean, best weekend ever, Kate. One of those weekends where we're just having so much fun coming up in sports. We're going to talk about the Super Bowl. Some more North Carolina ties. And of course, Women's basketball is a huge day on the hardwood for those ladies. We'll be right back after this. With Amex Platinum, you have access to over 1,400 airport lounges worldwide.

Franks Red Hot is a registered trademark of the French's food company LLC. ... moments away from the New England Patriots meeting the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl 60. As mentioned earlier in the show, there's a lot of North Carolina connections to this big game.
Starting point is 00:19:44 Homegrown guys, you have. NC ties, one Duke player, and multiple ties to NC State. In fact, the last 13... We'll see what holds. All right, so that loud voice I hear whenever the Patriots score do something, it'll be coming from you. Probably. Okay.
Starting point is 00:22:18 All right, thanks so much. You're going to make a lot of noise for the bad bunny. I know that much. All right, well, thanks so much for joining us tonight. We'll see a little bit later on for 11 o'clock for the latest I want to speak. Have a great night.
