Starting point is 00:00:00 Now, live coverage from your local news leader, investigating new information tonight, and your first alert forecast. Here's what's happening where you live. This is ABC 11 eyewitness news. All right now at 6, another hot and human day for all of us here in Central North Carolina, temperatures soaring into the 90s for the third day in a row and things don't appear to be cooling off anytime soon. And what better way than to beat the heat by spending part of your day at the splash pad? Raleigh, finding some relief from the hot temperatures at Gibson Play Plaza there at Dix Park. You're watching eyewitness news at 6 tonight. I'm Dwan Hogarth.
Starting point is 00:00:38 So glad that you've decided to spend part of your Sunday evening with us. Now, right now, Central Carolina is getting a small taste of summer. That hot weather has already arrived. And spoiler alert, it is not going anywhere anytime soon. We have chief neurologist, Don Schwinnaker, filling in for Cruz Medina tonight. Don, look, these temperatures, we're pretty much close to flirt with those triple digits almost. We did today. As a matter of fact, Raleigh went to 99 degrees, officially. 94, Fayetteville, 91, Rhone O'Crapheads, everybody in the viewing area in the 90s today.
Starting point is 00:01:08 And we're still in the 90s in every location except Clinton, 89 right now. 91, the current number in Lewisburg, 95, Durham, 93 Carborough, 92 Raleigh, and 92 in Lillington. Live look at first alert Doppler. Most of the area is dry. It looks like there's a little bit of precipitation up in person county, but that's not the case. It's just some radar trash as we look live into Roxborough. First alert to the evening ahead. If you're taking the pup for a walk tonight,
Starting point is 00:01:34 those temperatures will fall through the 90s into the 80s. By the time we go on after Toy Story tonight, we're down to 80 degrees. We'll talk more about the heat for the rest of the week in your seven-day forecast coming up to one. All right, see you soon, Don. But new tonight, Durham police are investigating a shooting that sent a man to the hospital. It happened shortly after 1130 last night at the intersection of Queen and Liberty Streets. Police say when they got there they found a man who had been shot. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay.
Starting point is 00:02:00 No word on any arrests at this time. The search for a missing kayaker in Halifax County coming to a tragic end. Cruz say they found the body of Angel Martinez, who went missing last month at Roanoke Rapids Lake. Martinez went missing after a boat overturned while kayaking with his friend there on the lake. Responders rescued his friend but could not find him. Deputies say Cruz found the body on Saturday. involving more than 20 different state in local agencies. Well, new tonight, as concerns over immigration continue to grow across the country and even here in the triangle,
Starting point is 00:02:34 local faith leaders are coming together today in Raleigh to support immigrants with resources they may need. ABC 11th's Tom George was there for that discussion. He joins us now live from the Edenton Street, United Methodist Church there in downtown Raleigh. Tom, good evening to you. What more can you share with us and our viewers about today's event? Yeah, well, for faith leaders, they say this is. been personal, especially in the past year when we saw more ice enforcement around North Carolina. These faith leaders argue that something needed to be done to protect their community.
Starting point is 00:03:06 They say this all formed late last year when we saw more of those ice enforcement actions. Faith leaders say they started hearing stories of people being afraid to go to school, being afraid to go to work, unsure about their rights, and it prompted them to form this group here in Wake County combining leaders from Jewish, Muslim, Christian, and other religious groups working to educate the public and support each other. It isn't one faith community. It's many faith communities, which often do not share a lot in common coming together, all saying no, we are a welcoming nation, and we want to live in a way that it respects that
Starting point is 00:03:44 tradition of America, but also what our faith calls us to do. And they say they are planning several more of these events over the summer again. With a focus on immigration, they also say they're planning on hosting training sessions. so that people know what their rights are when dealing with immigration enforcement. They're also planning up some rallies heading into the fall. So obviously a very important focus on immigration and those faith leaders coming together here in Raleigh, reporting live. Tom George, ABC 11, IWitness News. All right, Tom, thank you.
Starting point is 00:04:17 Well, moving on to talk hockey now, the Vegas Golden Knights taking the win in game three of the Stanley Cup final last night. Many of you watched it right here on ABC 11. The Cain's coming back by scoring four goals in the third period and eventually sending the game into double overtime. But in the end, Cain simply just could not get the win that they were hoping for last night. Kaye Roderson, Trayvon Miles on the road with the team traveling in Vegas out in the desert tonight. Hopefully y'all are trying to beat the heat out there. Kate and Trey, look, tell us first off how y'all are doing a long night for you guys. But how's the team doing after that devastating loss last night?
Starting point is 00:04:52 Today is a much needed day off for the Carolina Hurricanes. Rod Brundamore usually likes to keep things going. He mentioned it today and has press conference. He met via Zoom with him, but the guys needed a chance to just take a breather. Yeah, look, a lot of movies have been shot on this strip here in Las Vegas, but I don't think anybody saw what was coming and what we saw last night. Down by four goals to be able to come back, but not end up capping things off, losing in double overtime.
Starting point is 00:05:18 Such a heartbreaker for the Carolina Hurricanes. So now the guys are looking ahead to game four as they trail to 1. Two big updates from head coach Roderndomor. he doesn't anticipate any sort of lineup change with Freddie Anderson or Brandon Bussy in that. We don't know if that means lineup change from the start of the game or the end of the game. Rod is going to get with his coaching staff tonight and tomorrow to decide who will be in net for game four. Also, William Carrier is hopeful to play in game four after getting banged up in game three. Regardless of who's on the ice, mentally, physically, Rod Brindamor says this is a tight series and you got to be sharp.
Starting point is 00:05:48 Both teams understand how they need to play and kind of you got to stick with it. And I think we were doing a good job of that for the first half of the game. And then we kind of made a couple of mental errors. And those are what the other team's waiting on, just like we are. You want to be as sharp as you can because that's the game right now. Whoever blinks is the one that gets scored on. So we are hoping for a game four win on Tuesday. But as you said, a much needed break for the canes.
Starting point is 00:06:20 And even the caniacs with that long night and devastating loss last night. Kate, Trey, thanks so much.
