Well, thanks so much for joining us on this Sunday evening for the news at 6th following the U.S. Open. We hope you enjoy the tennis match. I'm Dwan Hoggard. Now, new details tonight after a woman killed, one person injured and a man now in custody after a shooting in Durham Saturday. Our time, George, is live near the scene there on Revereux Road. Tom, good evening to you. What can you tell us so far about this investigation into what all happened there in the Bull City? Yeah, good evening, Dewan.

I spoke with some neighbors who saw this happen right here in broad daylight along their street here in Durham. They say they were obviously shocked by this tragedy, especially when so many people rushed to call 911 and try and help. We know that this all happened here yesterday afternoon, around 1.30 in the afternoon, right along this residential road, here. This is video from the scene. Forty-three-year-old Victoria James was killed after shots were fired into her car that she was driving. A passenger was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A third passenger as teenager was also in the car but wasn't hurt. I notice up here in front of the car, there is this man going fast down the side of the road here and he has a gun in his hand and he's turned around like, you know, looking like this.

And I didn't know if he was shooting or what. And I was afraid to come outside for sure. So I made sure my doors were locked. Yeah, and that was a neighbor we just heard from right there seeing the suspect in the wake of that shooting. We now know who that suspect is. Police later arresting 38-year-old Launtrell Alston. He is now facing several charges. including first-degree murder.

Now, police say that Alston was previously in a relationship with the victim who was killed in this case. And so they do believe that this was an isolated incident. But again, they are still investigating right now. Reporting live, Tom, George, ABC 11, I witness news. All right, Tom, thank you. Also in Durham, police investigating a deadly crash. It happened overnight around 2 o'clock in the morning on South Miami Boulevard. Investigators say a man was stopped in the roadway after being involved in another crash.

She got out of his vehicle to assess the damages when police say he was hit by another car. The man was identified as 18-year-old Juan Archela and was taken to the hospital where he later died. The driver, 37-year-old Stephen Moore, told police he tried to stop, but his car continued to slide due to the rain. Moore is facing multiple charges, including DWI and misdemeanor death by vehicle. All happening this week, President Donald Trump is coming to North Carolina Wednesday to campaign for Michael Watley, the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate. Trump will speak at the Gastonia Municipal Airport at 7 p.m. O'Watley is facing former Governor Roy Cooper in the closely watched race. But before that, First Lady Melania Trump will be here on Tuesday.

According to the White House, the First Lady plans to visit Ash County to promote community resiliency after Hurricane Helene. She will also discuss education technology in schools. And today, the race for North Carolina House of Representatives District 36 is in the spotlight. Republican candidate Mary Insprecker was out with state auditor Dave Bullock, canvassing and Kerry today. She is facing incumbent Democrat Julie Van Heifen in the midterm. Well, week one of the NFL season is finally here, and that means your Carolina Panthers. We're back in action this afternoon at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. That's where Tray Mon Miles, our sports anchor, and veteran photo journalist Charlie Game Day Mickins, both at the bank for the game.

Trey, look, a great day if you've got Bryce Young on your fantasy team, however, if you started the Panthers defense, not so much. If you started the Panthers defense, I may question your motives in winning this week. You know, this was a great game, DeWan, from what we saw. Typically, over the last couple of years, what we've saw from the Panthers in season openers has not been great, but this year they actually stuck around. They actually fought in this game. This is a 31 to 31 game in the third quarter before the wheels just completely fell off

of this defense. Let's show you some of the highlights from down here in Charlotte. The Bears actually fumbled on their first offensive series, and the Panthers got it back with Goodfield position and made them pay. Bryce Young finding Chuba Hubbard for the early touchdown. Chicago responds with three straight scores. Carolina responds with Jalen Coker with a 51-yard touchdown. Panthers pull even at 24, but just before the half, Caleb Williams could not find anyone. So he took it himself all the way into the end zone. 29 yards, the longest run of his career. The Bears go into halftime with a 31 to 24 lead.

Well, the second half, the Panthers would tie it once again. Chuba Hubbard got into the end zone to tie things up at 31. But from there, this defense just could not get a stop. Chicago had two guys go over 100 yards apiece on the ground. The Bears put up 500 yards of total offense. They come in here and score the most points ever on the Panthers. Chicago winning 59 to 37. I wish I could sit here and tell you about the good stuff that happened, but that doesn't matter.

We played a really good team, and then when you make mistakes, you make fundamental mistakes, it gets magnified. Happened that way today. Good learning lesson, and like I said, it's week one. We've got 17 more of these things and a lot of good teams and a lot of good football left to play. You know, we really just shot ourselves in the foot in moments where we really needed to capitalize on momentum, some moments where we really should have, you know, whether it was penalties or just dumb things, whatever the case is, like you've just got to be better. You saw a couple of those highlights.

Bryce Young fantastic in this game. And the previous three season openers, he had not fared really well, just two touchdowns and six interceptions. Today, four total touchdowns, just one pick in this game. So Bryce in the offense looked wonderful. This defense needs a makeover, and they have to do it. quick. The players, however, say they are not going to blame defensive coordinator Igero Evro. Instead, they're going to get to watching film starting tomorrow and try to get back

to work. As Jalen Phillips, the defensive end, put it, can only get better from here. Yeah, Trey, and even blame aside, there's still a conversation that Canales needs to have with the D.C. there in the entire defense and saying, if your guys are putting up more than 360 yards in passing, give them some help and handle business on the defensive side of the ball. Well, September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.

and now doctors want to raise awareness about mental health warning signs. Our Bianca Holman explains tonight. September is Suicide Awareness Month. Details of the Lindsay Clancy trial sparking discussions about postparton mental health. Eyewitness News spoke with the licensed clinical social worker who specializes in care from mothers. She says oftentimes mothers are focused on nurturing others and their own needs could be neglected. We focus on the birth and then after that mom is sent home and not really checked in. again, I've checked in on again, until six weeks later, and that's a long time.

Experts stressed that warning signs for mothers can show up differently. Key signs include emotional numbness, fear of being alone, new or intensified anger, and persistent crying. We need to address where that's coming from and figure out, is this a chemical imbalance, is this situational? Like, what is making this person feel that way? But we should never ignore it, and we should never minimize it. Experts say men are also an at-risk group.

Suicide rates are higher among men who are white, American Indian, and Alaska Native. Experts note that men tend to have more access to lethal means and may not share with loved ones that they're struggling mentally and emotionally. As a culture, world culture, men have learned to stuff their motions that they're not often useful. And unfortunately, those constraints of express. emotion can collapse the person at some point. And if people aren't aware and take the time to ask, like a buddy or a friend or loved one, then people can go into a very dark place. Doctors tell eyewitness news, be on the lookout for a major change in their behavior, increase in drug or alcohol use, and extreme mood swings. If you're worried about a loved one,

doctors suggest being direct and ask them if they're having thoughts about suicide. They're going to simply answer you, whether they answer you verbally or not, or they answer you with not saying something. They're answering you either way. So the thing to do is to understand before you're in that situation because you could do a bunch of things in a situation not prepared for. Just simply have it in mind to ask if you have a concern. All counties in North Carolina have mobile crisis units that service the different areas. Those teams are trained counselors who come to the scene to help assess the people involved. I'm Chief Meteorologist, Dan Schweniker. Let's talk about the weather over the next couple of days because we got some great weather moving in by the midweek. Good evening to you live. Look first alert Doppler net. All the showers out of the region. One trying to sneak up into Mecklenburg County. That is it. But otherwise, we are dry. We head live to a very blue sky over downtown Durham. City of Medicine still at 89 degrees.

It is very warm out there, still very humid, under a partly cloudy sky and a west wind at six. As a matter of fact, feels like temperatures. This is the first hour we've dropped into the 90s across the region. Still 99 down in Clinton, 94 out of the door in Rhone Oak Rapids, 96, Smithfield, 95, Raleigh, feels like 94, Chapel Hill, Durham, 93 in Sanford. Tonight we'll go from feeling like the 90s to about 70 for the overnight low, mainly clear skies. It's going to stay warm. It's going to stay humid. But our normal for this time of year is 64.

We're going to be about 5 to 7 degrees above that, really across the area. Tomorrow morning as you head out the door into the drive back to work, temperatures will start in the 70s, so quickly climb into the 80s. By lunchtime, we are up to 87 degrees. Satellite radar composite, one or two little pop-up showers out in the triad and north of us, but the frontal boundary working closer to us will drop through and give us relatively dry conditions. Normally when a front drops through, it gives us thunderstorms, but not this one.

It's not going to have a lot of moisture to work with. So as it works through, we'll see some cooler air. Now, by the time we go on for ABC 11 at 11 tonight after the movie, those temperatures will be in the 70s. But as we get into tomorrow morning, we'll start the 70s, we'll end the day in the 80s. One or two little spots of green, an isolated shower could fire. Most places will not see any rainfall. It's just that with the humidity working through and starting to work out and that front working through an isolated shower could fire.

Tuesday is when we really start to feel the nice air. 59, Raleigh, 58 in Durham to start today on Tuesday. And highs on Tuesday will stay in the low 80s. Feeling more like September should around here, almost October as well. Forecasts looks like this for tomorrow. Temperatures across the region running in the 90s. 91 Raleigh, 90 Durham 94 in Fayetteville.

Wednesday looks great too. 86, a little above average, but not too bad. We do see some heat starting to work back in as we head into Thursday, upper 80s. Friday, 91.

More humidity at this point Friday night football looks good. Stray shower storm on Saturday, 88. And Sunday, we'll see temperatures staying in the 80s. But a week of mostly 80s, this is our last full official week of summer. and we finally get a little taste to fall in there as we go Tuesday into Wednesday. We'll be right back. FX's the bear on Hulu up for 8 Eminem. nominations. I'm trying to be a positive team mate. Yeah, not now. And Love Story, John F. Kennedy, Jr. and Carolyn Beset is up for seven nominations. It's a question of if I'm cut out to be Mrs. JFK Jr. HACC's lead actress Jean Smart could make Emmy History Monday night, becoming the first actor to win Best Comedy Actress for every season of a series run. I'm sending email. You can't. You still use Hotmail. This could also be an Emmy first for Chase Infinity. for her lead role on Hulu's The Testaments. She kicked off the year with her first Academy Award nomination for one battle after another.

If she does not capture that Emmy Award this season, prepare to hear her name called many times again after this year. She really is just this burgeoning actress.
