Well, thanks for joining us tonight on eyewitness news. I'm Dewan Hogarth. So glad to have you for us this half hour. Now happening tomorrow, a high-profile murder trial gets underway in Durham County. Miguel Salgado Alvarez has pleaded not guilty to all counts in the 2012 killing. of UNC student Faith Hedgepeth, who was found beaten to death in her off-campus apartment. Arsenia is live for us in Durham this half hour with what we can expect. I know a lot of friends and family of Faith Hedgepeth are really looking for this trial to start and then come to a close.

That's right, Dewan. We also spoke with a retired judge who knew Hedgepeth's sister. He expects the trial to be difficult for the family. Salgado Livares was a stranger to Hedgepeth. Police say he lived in a near-beckes'er. by apartment complex and was identified after genetic genealogy and a DNA match from an unrelated traffic stop led to his arrest in 2021. He faces charges of first degree murder, first degree rape, first degree sexual offense, and first degree burglary. As jury selection begins tomorrow, retired superior court judge Carl Fox says one challenge will be finding jurors who can remain neutral after years of local and national coverage. You're talking about five years past. before this case came to trial.

So I don't know the inner workings of what happened and why it's taking so long for it to get into trial. Sometimes that just happens. But I think it's a source of frustration for a victim's family in a murder case. Once 12 jurors and alternates are selected, the trial will move into opening statements. ABC 11 will be there for the trial. And the Durham District's Attorney's Office says it's expected to last

about four weeks in Durham. Cindy Bay. ABC 11 eyewitness news. All right, Cindy, thank you. Meanwhile, a shooting investigation playing out out as we speak in Wake County. A woman is recovering after being shot Saturday night. It happened here on Westbury Lake Drive around 1130.

That woman was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The search for the suspect is underway as we speak. Police have not released any details about the person they are looking for. In Raleigh, police are investigating a string of car break-ins. This was the scene at the Holiday Inn Express, suites Raleigh on Little Briar Creek Lane. Police say 27 cars were broken into overnight. Property was reported stolen from at least one of those vehicles. Police say the investigation is ongoing. Our love to go ahead and talk weather. Meteorologist Cruz Medina is in the

building tonight in Cruz. It's just been a fabulous weekend so far. Absolutely. And we're going to continue with the sunny conditions as we go forward through the next few days. It's just going to gradually get warmer in time. So tomorrow, very similar to. to what we had today, 81 degrees. Notice by the time we get into Wednesday, even though the sunshine continues, we're eventually going to heat up into the upper half of the 80s.

We could be talking about record highs. I'll tell you more about that coming up later in the show. For this evening, though, if you've stepped outside, you know it's very pleasant out there. It's low humidity. Diptors are going to stay in the 70s through this evening. And then eventually overnight will drop into the 60s and 50s

by the time you're heading out the door tomorrow morning. So it's going to be a mainly clear night. There will be a few clouds that pass through at times, especially in our northern counties. But you can see those areas still making it down into the low to mid 50s, 55 in Raleigh, 54 in Fayetteville, some areas like Rayford and Lumberton in the lower half of the 50s as well. So tomorrow, you get a comfortable start to your day. It's not going to be overly warm in the morning. You might even if you can drink your coffee outside, it's going to feel great by noon, 75 degrees.

And then afternoon highs again pushing into the low 80s. So that is kind of where we should be for this time of the year, just a few degrees above average, turning significantly above average by later. in the week, though. We'll talk about how long the warmup lasts coming up in your seven-day forecast. Back to you. All right, Cruz, we'll see you in a few minutes, but today marks two years since rain from Hurricane Helene led to a major flooding that devastated Western North Carolina. More than 100 people died because of that storm. And even two years later, that entire region is still rebuilding. Bianca Holman sharing how Asheville continues to make progress and how you can support the region this fall.

It was likely the worst day in many, many people's lives. And for us, we want to make sure that we take the time to remember those people who were lost, that we also take the time to acknowledge that there are people who still need support. Kyle McCurry of Explore Asheville remembers the moment that changed Buncombe County two years ago. Businesses, homes, historical sites, roads, all damaged and families who lost loved ones. We saw a lot of things happen in those early days from the return of access to the roadways to water and people returning to the area to work, live, and recreate. And at the same time, we know that it's been an uneven recovery.

So in all the ways visitors can see and feel Asheville's back, and at the same time, some parts of our region will need more time. With help from across the state and nationally, Western North Carolina has been able to rebuild, and tourism has held bring money to the area. McCurry says visitors' spending reached about $2.6 billion last year, with tourism representing about 20% of the county's GDP and supports one in seven jobs. However, this spending still remains below 2023 levels and the hospitality workforce is still down. Belene is a milestone for us. And so as you think about it, one of the best ways that you can support this community is to come here.

Well, new tonight, a Fayetteville man arrested for impersonating a police officer. Police say around 3.30 this morning, a man dressed as a police officer robbed a home on Osceola Drive. Police say he knocked on the door before entering and then taking money. No injuries were reported.

The suspect is being identified as 27-year-old Jaden Boone. He's charged with robbery with the deadly weapon, possession of stolen goods, and impersonating a law enforcement officer. Investigators say the equipment boon was wearing was stolen from a Fayetteville police officer's home while that officer was away on vacation. We're now to a developing story overseas tonight. British police have arrested several people in what they are calling a major incident near a U.S. air base. ABC's Lama Hassan has the details force tonight from London. Counterterrorism police confirming they are now leading the investigation into the state. incident. Police received a call at 1245 a.m. local time relating to three suspicious vehicles which appear to be traveling towards RAA Fairford. A reminder, RAA Fairford is a British

base being used by the US to carry out operations against Iran. Police responded to the call, armed police then initially arresting five men on suspicion of committing offenses under the Explosive Act and later further arrested them on suspicion of preparation of a Terrorism Act. The base is on lockdown, a 400-yard cordon is in place with the Army's explosive ordnance disposal unit carrying out searches. 85 households have been evacuated while the investigation is being conducted. Another reminder that in July, the UK said its armed forces were ready to protect the country after Iran's Revolution Regards issued a warning not to allow U.S. bombers to fly from Fairford,

saying the airbases would then become legitimate targets. Lama Hassan, ABC News, London. Well, right now, much of the East Coast is still dealing with dangerous and deadly conditions from a powerful Nor'easter. That storm bringing heavy rain and flooding to the region. NBC's Lionel Moise is in New York tonight with the latest. The first North Easter fall leaving more than 40 million dealing with dangerous storm conditions along the East Coast. The powerful and slow-moving storm bringing heavy rain, flooding and strong winds. Crazy storm, and it's just, I can't believe this is all happening right now. of emergency declared in New York and New Jersey where dozens in coastal towns had to be evacuated, some rescued from cars.

I want to repeat, do not drive enclosed or flooded roadways. To be clear, we're not out of the woods just yet. ABC meteorologist Leslie Lopez is in Seabright, New Jersey. The river behind me here is breaching and making its way right into the street. The winds are very strong. It is high tide. Another scene, another day of this nor-easter bringing in coastal. for flooding. This street in Avalon covered in floodwater. The storm turning deadly in New York City,

a tree falling in Brooklyn killing a housing authority employee who was walking through a parking lot. It broke my heart. I'm just somebody that knows him from the neighborhood and seeing him as a worker. And it affected me. So I can't imagine what his family is going to go through. Sea foam flying in the air off the coast of Massachusetts, storm surge also damaging homes. The sand dunes in Corolla, North Carolina, also taking a hit. But despite evacuations all along the coast, this man on New York's Long Island chose to ride out the storm, sleeping in his 44-foot boat. Concern, curious, and we love the water. As a person in New Hampshire was seen surfing in the dangerous conditions, Lionel Moyes, ABC News, New York.

All right, joined now by meteorologist Chris Medina. We were just talking about, I'm taking a look here at this radar behind you. just a lot of activity up there to the northeast, but also impacting some of the coast as well, you said. Absolutely. This was a massive nor'easter, so affecting basically all of the eastern seaboard. Let's take a look at where this system is at now, and of course it's pulling away from our coastline, but the impacts are certainly going to linger. So out on the outer banks, Highway 12, badly damaged, especially near the Pee Island Visitor Center, NCDOT, working to repair not only the dunes, but the road that was damaged there. Now the impacts continue across.

across the mid-Atlantic states and the northeast. So you can see even heavy rainfall moving into areas like New York. That's also moving through parts of New Jersey, Long Island, and even parts of New England. So that system, thankfully, is going to weaken over the next few days. And as it pulls away from us, that's going to leave us with some pleasant conditions. We're in a sunny stretch right now. So we saw the nice conditions yesterday. And today, for the next few days, we expect highs to be in the low to mid-80s.

We'll be nearing records, though, as we go Wednesday through Friday. That's where we could be closer to 90 degrees. then next weekend is looking cooler, almost like what we had at the end of last week, those cloudy cooler days in the 70s with a few showers. That's looking like the setup that we're going to be in once again. But for this evening, walking the dog, getting out for dinner plans, it's going to feel great outside. If anything, almost a little chilly with tipter's in the 70s this evening. 60s, by the time we get closer to midnight and first alert predictor walks us through tonight, other than a few clouds around, it's going to be a mainly clear night. So that sends our tipters all the way

down into the 50s. Now by the time you're waking up, there could be a few fair weather clouds in the morning. We'll still call it mostly sunny through the afternoon. Partly cloudy skies and high tipters will top out in the low 80s for most. Few spots could even be in the upper 70s, but all in all, a great day, even if you have evening plans, tipter should be cooling down again into the 70s. So from start to finish tomorrow, expect dry conditions. You've got the low humidity. It's not going to be overly hot, maybe a degree or two above average. That's about it for tomorrow. Not really all that hot. Now, as we go into the back half of the week, I mentioned that we had potential to break records or at least tie them. So Wednesday is the start of that warm up already at 88 degrees.

And as this high pressure continues to move off to our north and east, that's eventually what's going to cool us down next weekend. But low pressure to our south and our wind direction out of the southwest, that's actually going to bump our temperatures up through the midweek. So already eyeing Wednesday and Thursday, forecasting 88 on Wednesday, the record is 89. forecasting 989 on Thursday, the record is 90 degrees. So we're talking to potential to possibly tie these records. And of course, we're going to be adding to our count of above average days so far this month. So far, 21 of those. And we've only had four below average. Most of those came throughout last week with those cloudy and cooler days that we had with some rain. But today, obviously, the sunshine has been winning out. This is a live look from the Pindo Sky Cam as the

sun starts to set. 77 degrees in Raleigh and Durham. Only 70 in rocks, and 79 in Fayetteville. So again, Tipters tonight are going to cool down into the 50s. It's going to feel great. Great start to your week tomorrow with a decent amount of sunshine. By the time we get into the midweek, we'll start to warm up. So mid 80s by Tuesday, upper 80s by Wednesday. Look at Thursday and Friday.

We're going to be near that 90 degree mark. We've got a lot of events coming up too. And just a reminder, Thursday is October 1st. So it looks like we're going to bring in the month of October on a warm note, but that's not going to last long. That'll second summer that a lot of people like to talk about. Yep. So it'll come in.
