This is ABC 11 eyewitness news. Good morning, Carolina. You made it to Sunday. It's August 2nd. I'm Tamara Scott in for Bianca Holman. This morning on eyewitness news. A risk for severe weather has us declaring a first alert day. We're timing out the strong storms that could bring the damaging winds. Plus, breaking news. A shooting at a bar in home. Harnant County leaves multiple people dead and injured. We have new video from the scene. And the push to win over voters ahead of the November election.

The message from North Carolina Democrats at the annual unity dinner. But first, let's check in with first alert meteorologist Steve Stewart. Steve, we were hearing the rain come down here in Durham and we know that all the pictures that we see. It's all cloudy. Yeah, it is overcast. Yeah. We might get some breaks in the clouds later, which would destabilize us even more. So I'm kind of hoping the clouds hold tough all day today and just get some showers at times.

had some early this morning and most of it's lifting up to the north now but later today I expect more showers and some thunderstorms couple of those could be on the strong side there is a low level a one risk basically from Durham County and points north and west that's our best chance of getting a strong storm later today but the flood risk is elevated not only today but tomorrow and Tuesday it's a low level risk but because of the slow-moving nature and some of these thunderstorms they get going later on we could get some heavy downpours mainly quiet now a couple little spotty showers just out

to our west. We'll see if these can clip parts of a Chatham County heading into the trium. But up north, we had some heavy rain there in person county. Still have some rain there. This is lifting up into Virginia now. This will be out of here pretty soon. You have lots of dry time before we get a risk of a shower thunderstorm a little bit later on. So taking the pups out in next couple of hours, really low chance at getting a shower thunderstorm. And you can see high resolution model guidance has that shower lifting north, lots of dry time. And then eventually we'll start getting some showers and some thunderstorms coming into play. And again, don't take the timing of position.

Literally just know there's going to be a few storms around later on. But not everyone gets rain today. 78 into North Hills, cloudy skies at 2.76. There's so much moisture in the air to fuel some of these thunderstorms. Lower to middle 70s across the board with a few 80s right now down in the sandhills at this hour. Meantime, if you're heading out for this evening, we'll keep that risk of a shower thunderstorm going. Numbers fall down to the mid to upper 70s later on. Coming up, keep the umbrella handy.

We had quite a few days of some rain in the forecast. More on that coming up at a few minutes. Thank you, Steve. We're following breaking news in Harnock County, a deadly shooting at the 601 bar in downtown Dunn. Police identifying the two victims as Jarvis Elliott and Travis Williams. We also learned a woman was shot in the back and another man was grazed by a bullet. Investigators on the scene overnight trying to determine what led to the gunfire. Police are asking any witnesses to come forward.

And this morning, Raleigh police are investigating two separate shootings from Saturday. The first happened on Rock Quarry Road near the Dollar General's store. This is south of New Hope Road. Police stay blocking off the strip mall there, but it's not clear if anybody was hurt. And more gunfire happening in a neighborhood off of Newburn Avenue. Officers called to Shillam Street yesterday where they found shell casings and droplets of blood, but they did not find the victim. Stay with us for updates on both scenes.

Well, this morning, we're working to learn more about a water rescue in Raleigh. First responders called to a pond yesterday on East Millbrook Road near Atlantic Avenue. And I witness telling our breaking news crew, one of his friends jumped into the pond, went under, and never came back up. We're still working to learn more about who that man is and what exactly happened. Now to your voice, your vote. North Carolina Democrats gathering in Raleigh for their annual unity dinner, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren delivering a keynote address to a sold-out audience, leaning into the frustration around affordability. It comes as the eyes are all on the Senate race here in North Carolina, both parties hoping it will help

them take control of the chamber in D.C. John Doubting has more. Democrats out with an urgent message for voters Saturday in the final stretch of the midterm elections. North Carolina, the rest of the country is counting on you. The state Democratic Party held their annual unity dinner, showing up funding and excitement ahead of the November midterm elections, as all eyes across the country are on the Senate race between former Governor Roy Cooper and former RNC chairman Michael Watley. We will win this Senate seat. We will make stuff cost less for hardworking families, and we will build a stronger North Carolina for everyone.

The dinner Saturday brought out some of the party's biggest names with a keynote address from Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren. Senator Warren telling eyewitness news she felt a lot of energy for Democrats as she knocked on doors and carried. We have a president who promised he would lower costs and didn't. So now the Democrats say, we're going to get this done. Democrats hoping that a message centered around affordability will win over voters in November. I think that all you're going to hear from North Carolina Democrats is talking about making sure that we're lowering costs for people across the state. It's the number one thing that I hear on the doors when I'm out knocking. In a statement to eyewitness news, the NCGOP sent a statement saying in part, quote,

the North Carolina Democratic Party has fully embraced the move to the radical left's socialist agenda. And tonight have brought in Elizabeth Warren to support Roy Cooper, Anita Earls, and their extremist nominees in Raleigh. Ahead of the dinner, a small group of people gathered outside the convention center speaking out against former Governor Cooper. I just want to let people know that we don't think that he did a good job when he was governor, and we certainly don't want him to be in the Senate. In his statement, the Watley campaign said in part, quote, Roy Cooper has led the charge for higher taxes, health care for illegal immigrants, and letting criminals run free from prison. So it should come as no surprise that he is embracing his fellow socialist Elizabeth Warren today in Raleigh. John Dowding with that report, North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Anita Earls also spoke last night as she runs for re-election against Sarah Stevens. Early voting starts in a little more than 70 days.

Now as we approach this November election, here's some important dates to remember. October 9th is the deadline to register to vote. In person, early voting is from October 15th through October 31st. The last date to request an absentee ballot is October 20th and November 3rd is Election Day. It's also the deadline for all absentee ballots. Now, new this morning, a slight de-escalation in the war with Iran. President Trump announcing he will order American forces to hold off on strikes, claiming Middle East allies had reached the parameters of a deal to end the war.

The reversal came after Trump talked to the Saudi crown prince, it also threatened more strikes on Iran as the U.S. looks to reopen the Strait of Hermuz. Trump says Israel has agreed to help complete the agreement. And gas prices holding steady overnight after news of the possible deal, AAA's national average sits at 410 a gallon. Here in North Carolina, it's 380. Now, new this morning, the powerball jackpot claims again after another night without a winner. The Grand Prize jumping overnight from $707 to $748 million.

Nobody has hit the jackpot since early May. The next powerball drawing is on Monday. Now, easing water restrictions. The change is coming to Raleigh tomorrow after all of our recent rainfall. Plus, a park bathroom destroyed. new images of the vandalism in Nightdale as police look for the person responsible and later. Fighting hunger in the triangle, the new food bank open in Durham and the impact it could have. But first, good morning, Steve.

Hey, good morning there, Tamara. Good morning, everyone. We had some showers this morning. Again, hit and miss are moving in from south to north. Heavy shower there in person county. That's pushing up into Virginia now. Hours of dry time, but watch out for more showers and thunderstorms later this afternoon. They'll be hit and miss, but could have some heavy rain.

All the details coming up. This is First Alert weather from ABC 11. I witness news. Good Sunday morning, everybody. Had some heavy rain in spots this morning. That's been lifting to the north. But scattered showers and thunder showers will be with us later on today. Coverage is going to be 50 to maybe 70% of the area could get rain later on. Had some rain already in a few spots.

Still a couple of showers just out to our west. Maybe that'll make into Chatham County into Moore County. Just a little bit of light rain there. But that heavier shower leaving person county and pushing all the, way up into Virginia out and about today maybe heading to the lake again lots of dry time just keep in mind later in the day there could be some showers and thunderstorms you have to dodge a couple of those could have gusty winds and some heavier downpours seventy eight degrees of temperature right now cloudy skies high dew point a lot of

moisture in the air widespread mid to upper 70s with a few areas now touching 80 down in the sand hills Bulls are gonna wrap up their series with the striper's at five o'clock today there could be a shower thunderstorm around they'll be surprised if there's a brief delay kids run the basis though on Sunday. So the southeast is rather active all the way to the northeast as well. Shows and thunderstorms and heavy downpours really hot out west. Look at Denver over 100 degrees there for today. It's a level one and even level two out of four many areas of that flash flooding risk with the nature of these thunderstorms are just absolutely moisture loaded.

So far all the major hubs though looking pretty good. Got you seven day coming up in just a few minutes, Tamara. Sounds great. Thank you, Steve. Well tomorrow the city of Raleigh will lift stage one water restrictions. It comes after recent rain helped our local drought and led to a rebound at Falls Lake. The lake is now at 84% capacity, well above that level that triggered the restrictions, but still short of full. Officials say things are headed in the right direction, but are still asking people to use water wisely. And happening now, bathrooms at the Nightdale Station Park soccer fields are closed after vandalism. Nightdale police sharing these photos on Facebook. Showing the damage from Friday night, you can see there the toilet shattered in pieces and trashed

everywhere. Anybody with information is asked to call the department. An update on the UNC Football General Manager placed on leave this morning we are hearing from Mike Lombardi's lawyer. His claims that nobody has told them about the reason for the investigation. We'll have that statement and getting kids ready for the classroom. The back-to-school bash in Durham hosted by the Sheriff's Office. Here's tonight's ABC primetime preview from on the red carpet. The night kicks off at 7-6 Central with 90 minutes of America's funniest home videos. Then at 8.7 Central, get your popcorn ready and maybe mix yourself a drink for the movie presentation of cocktail.

This morning we're hearing from Mike Lombardi's lawyer after the UNC Football General Manager was placed on a paid administrative leave. He's now being represented by Tom Mars, a veteran lawyer with experience handling.

NCAA cases. In his statement, ABC 11, Mars says Lombardi hasn't been told anything about the nature of UNC's investigation and welcomes the opportunity to clear his name. He added that Lombardi is fully cooperating with UNC and expects the investigation will be swift, thorough, and fair. He asked people to let the process run its course before jumping to any conclusions about the nature of the investigation. UNC has put out a statement of its own saying head coach Bill Belichick or anyone else in the program could not comment on Lombardi's situation. You'll continue to this story. And this morning we are less than a month away from the start of the traditional school year and families are trying to get prepared. To help parents out the Durham County Sheriff's

Office organized a back-to-school event on Saturday, James Price explains why this event comes at the right time as many families deal with shrinking budgets. In the summer heat, hundreds of people packed the Durham County Stadium to grab free school supplies at the annual stop the violence and resource fair. Pins, notebooks, the Durham community stepped up in a big way to give back just in time for the start of the school year. I'm very thankful. Moms like Betty Little appreciates the community's support. She came out to the school supply drive with her daughter Armani and her two nieces, Kayla and Kamaya.

This is wonderful for the community. Durham County Sheriff Clarence Burkhead says it's important. Students have a strong start to the school year. I am convinced if we didn't do this, some of these kids would not have to. supplies and we know how tough it is on teachers now. They don't have the resources to buy extra supplies. So again, this is really, this is really critical for these kids. And the support goes beyond school supplies. They're also working to connect families with the tools they need. I just spoke with the lady who's living in the extended state. So we're connecting them with the

resources that they need so they can get stabilized and get on their feet. This is the fourth year of the school supply drive and it arise as families are facing rising back to school expenses. According to the National Retail Federation, parents will spend nearly $864 per child this school year. A lot of parents don't have enough money to support kids, and they struggle to get their kids' schools supplies. And that's Jemise Price with that report. Meantime over in Raleigh, Carolina Hurricane player Jacob Slaven hosted a back-to-school bash with the Raleigh-Dream Center. 3,000 packbackback back back back. And supplies were distributed to get children.

And there was also festival rides, games, and food trucks. Well, new this morning, a new golf course is open in the Sand Hills, the renowned Tobacco Road Golf Club, welcoming the first players to its par three course in Sanford yesterday. It's a 12-hole course called the Matchbox, featuring synthetic turf blended into the landscape. Tea times are now available. Well, here's a live look at the American Tobacco Campus here in Durham, not too far away from us. And it's a beautiful site. Certainly still cloudy out there, though, Steve.

Let's talk about it. Get that course in Sanford. That looked beautiful. I know, didn't it? Little par three. I know. I know some people who are very excited about that. He's the driver in the bag.

There you go. All right. Hey, listen, outside right now, we got the cloudy skies. Had showers around this morning and many spots. I'll show you the radar coming up. Lots of dry time today. Just know there could be a few strong storms coming a little bit later on today.

We'll call it periods of rain, but there is that risk that we could get some heavy downpours. And it's not just today. It's the next. few days. Keep that umbrella handy. Lower rain chances later this week as we get into Thursday, Friday and the upcoming weekend. But overall, with this pattern that we're in right now, we're in a favorable environment to see scattered showers and thunderstorms with the upper level pattern, plus the surface front. But again, those chances really going down later in the week. A lot of

deep moisture in place for it today. This water vapor, a precipitable water graphic that we're showing you here. Notice how that's going to be shifting to the east tomorrow, but it does try to come back at us as we get into Tuesday and Wednesday. So we're going to keep those elevated chances going through at least midweek. And then you see the rain lookouts coming in kind of south to north with very little eastward progression. And we could get some training thunderstorms later on. Not much activity now, spotty little showers. There's a little shower that's leaving Moore County to Chatham County. Heavy rain that's exiting person county and all the way up around Chase City and Clarksville getting some heavy rain out there for this morning.

If you're out and about on the golf course today, just be aware you might have. have to dodge a thunderstorm or two should have a lot of clouds regardless. If we get breaks in the clouds, though, that's going to give us a better chance of getting some stronger storms later on. They're going to be popping up as we go through the afternoon, hit and miss. Don't take this literally. Just know Central North Carolina is under the gun for the opportunity for rain. And if you look at the next few days, our in-house model not too bullish, but a lot of the global suggests a half inch to maybe an inch of rain between now and all the way into Tuesday. 78 degrees and cloudy out there at North Hills with a south breeze of seven might be a little damp.

We had some rain there early this morning. 74, Oxford, 79, Irwin and Faveau currently at 81, and these are high dewpoints. Mid-70s, a lot of moisture available for these thunderstorms to tap into. We'll keep that risk going through the evening. Notice there's no guarantee that you're going to get rain, but that opportunity exists all the way through the late evening hours. As we jump to Tuesday, fronts nearby, scattered showers and thunderstorms. storms around again and some of these could bring some heavier downpours. That front kind of meanders and stays with us so we're going to keep that risk going on

Wednesday by the time we get to Thursday that front should wash out and then chances will go down a bit. Mountains could be unsettled today. Beaches can be unsettled today. Not a guarantee, but there'll be some scattered showers and thunderstorms around, especially in some of the southern beaches. Our highs today will likely be in the mid 80s in the triangle, lower 80s in our northern counties. scattered storms at times, maybe a couple of those on the strong side, north and west of the triangle. Tonight we'll have an evening storm risk, otherwise we'll be in the 70s of most spots. So it's a warm start to the day tomorrow and will be around 87. Little lower coverages that axis of moisture shifts a little bit farther east.

And it kind of drifts back with that stalled front for Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday, Friday and Saturday lower rain chances and a little hotter with temperatures near 90. Wow, thank you, Steve. Well, a major step forward for Durham as leaders work to meet the growing need for food assistance. A new food bank just opened this week on Hamlin Road. north of I-85. It's called the Food Line Feeds Hunger Solutions Center. This 64,000 square foot facility is more than a place for families to get food. It's also a distribution hub that helps dozens

of community partners feed people across the region. This week, leaders gather to celebrate the new building and its role in reducing hunger. I am really excited about, one, there's the expanded access to be able to get more produce and protein out. We know it's so important. We believe food is medicine here,

and that food is a basic human right, and to be able to better meet the need of our neighbors is pretty incredible in a time like this. And after the ribbon cutting, leaders toward the distribution warehouse saying the Food Line Feeds Hunger Solutions Center will expand access to fresh food and help meet a growing demand. While happening today, the 12 U Johnson County All-Stars will make their debut in the Little League softball world series. And the team enters the competition with a ton of momentum. Joko went 6 in the state and district tournaments while outscoring their opponents, 93 to nothing. ABC 11 caught up with the All-Stars before they left for Greenville. They tell us their confidence, is that an all-time high?

They're all really excited to get down there. We haven't played in so long. So I think they're excited to get back out there and face some competition and just see how much further we can push it. It's never been a thing with this group where they were just satisfied. These girls have kind of known that they can do this for a long time. Just see how far we can push it. And tonight, Johnson County will face a team from Canada at 7 o'clock.

on ESP Ed 2. The tournament is double elimination format. It knew this morning the big waves were big and the tails they were wagging at the 10th annual dog surfing championship in California. Dozens of canine athletes and their human handlers hit the water Saturday, showing off impressive balance and style and confidence as crowds lined the beach to cheer them on. Every heat delivered memorable rides, but only a few dogs paddled away with titles. Well, coming up, a stormy Sunday leads to a risk for severe weather. Plus, we're tracking some fast-moving wildfires out west.

Also, an update on the faith Hedgepath murder case, the court hearing tomorrow after both sides filed motions. Good morning. We're getting a live look at downtown Durham. This morning, certainly cloudy out there. We saw some rain earlier. Steve's talking about it in a minute. Good morning, Carolina. It's Sunday, August 2nd. I'm Tamara Scott in for Bianca Holman.

You're watching eyewitness news on ABC 11 and wherever you stream. The details of the top stories and all of the day's news is just ahead. But like I said, we've got to check in with Steve Stewart, our first alert meteorologist here. Steve, tell us about the rain that we're gonna be seeing if we haven't already seen it.

Yeah, some areas picked up some good rain this morning here in the studio. We can hear it outside, so the cars got washed. But yeah, we're looking at scattered today. I want to stress, not everyone's gonna to get rain today. You have lots of dry time to get things done, although it's incredibly humid out there right now. And then later today, we expect to get some thunderstorms around. A couple of those could be on the strong side and we get some locally heavy downpours.

SPC's whittled back that severe risk, basically from Durham County and points to the north and west. And it's a low level one risk for today. The flooding risk is elevated. And it's a level one, which is the lowest risk, but not just today, but tomorrow and Tuesday, as we're in a favorable environment for some thunderstorms coming in from south to north during the course of the day. Right now we don't have much action. We did have some heavy rain early this morning. And you can see that's pushing up into Virginia, spotty little showers there in parts of Chatham County. But that's heavy rain up in Virginia right now. That's continuing to lift off to the north and a couple showers there in our northern counties at this time.

Meantime, if you're heading out for it today, at times we'll get showers. But notice the probabilities going up a little bit as we get into the afternoon. and numbers hovering in those mid-80s. And the highest resolution model we've got, the high-resolution rapid refresh does show some more scattered showers and thunderstorms developing. Don't take the position literally, but do know the coverage.

I think there will be some areas that miss out on rain today. 78 in the North Hills, the South breeze at 7. Look at that dew point at 76. That is very high. There is a lot of moisture in the air. Low 80s down in the sand hills right now with Clinton, the warm spot at 82 degrees. Evening planner will fall down to the,

upper 70s and we'll keep that lower to middle risk of getting a shower, thunderstorm going until the midnight hour. Keep the umbrella handy though. This is an unsettled pattern that's going to last for a few days. More on that coming up in a few minutes. Thank you, Steve. Well, new this morning, firefighters battling multiple wildfires in Washington state. New video shows homes on fire in Spokane County where the highest level of evacuation orders are now in effect. Meantime, hot and dry conditions are fueling wildfires in other states and millions of Americans are under heart alert. ABC's Allison Kosick has more. In Washington State, a statewide burn ban ordered amid a dozen wildfires.

The governor activating the National Guard to support firefighting operations. Outside Spokane, a fast-moving wildfire burning thousands of acres sparking evacuations. State officials say thousands of structures are threatened by the Old Trails Fire, one of three in the area. The Maldrite fire also burning more than 40,000 acres, forcing evacuations. Fire retardant dropped from planes to battle the flames. Further south, more than half of Oregon enduring severe drought conditions, with at least 30 large fires burning, including the Roe Creek Complex fires. On board the International Space Station and astronauts sharing this photo

of a massive plume of smoke stretching across Oregon. In southeastern Idaho, the fast-moving big rock fire has charred more than a thousand acres, threatening nearby communities. Meantime, in northern California outside Santa Rosa, firefighters battling the woodside fire, encountering walls of thick smoke and flying embers. The flames fueled by hot, dry, and windy conditions. The dry trees definitely contributed to a lot of spot fires. That's where the challenges were. Those extreme temperatures extending to southern California, where beachgoers are also being warned of rough surf and dangerous rip currents. I don't go anything beyond where I can easily stand. Allison Kosick, ABC News, New York.

And now to an update on breaking news in Idaho, a mass shooting at an in-and-out burger restaurant leaves three people dead and seven more injured. Terrifying video showing a man standing in the drive-thru at the Twin Falls store, pointing a gun and firing. Families in that parking lot running for their lives, cars speeding away. Police say the suspect is dead. They're still working to identify the identity of the gunman and the motive for the violence. And back here at home, a man is behind bars after a deadly stabbing in Raleigh. 33-year-old David Hoyle is facing a murder charge for allegedly stabbing Matthew Bullock to death. It happened Friday and 8 on Crabb Orker Drive near Lake Johnson.

It's unclear how the two know each other or what led to the deadly violence. And tomorrow we could get an update on. the case against the man accused of killing UNC student faith Hedgepath. There's a court hearing for Miguel Enrique Sal Guerrero Olivares. It comes after more than a dozen motions were filed in the case. The prosecution asking to ban cameras from the courtroom for two key witnesses and prevent the defense from introducing any other potential suspects. Meantime, the defense filed motions to prohibit several pieces of DNA and other evidence.

IWitness News will be in court tomorrow to give you live updates. The trial is scheduled to start September 28th. Also happening tomorrow, your chance to weigh in on proposed changes to voting rules here in North Carolina. The State Board of Elections holding a public hearing at 10 o'clock, collecting public comments on four rules related to campaign finance disclosures and complaints. The in person hearing is happening at the Dobbs building on Salisbury Street. Well, new this morning, North Carolina Senator Tom Tillis back in the spotlight as he continues to withhold support for Todd Blanche's nomination as Attorney General. Tillis posting Saturday that he considers Blanche to be qualified, but says, He says he will not vote for him because of the controversial settlement of President Trump's

lawsuit against the IRS. The post was a response to Trump who says he will push Congress to revive the fund if Blanche's nomination does not move forward. The Senate Judiciary Committee could meet as soon as Tuesday for a possible vote. And new this morning, President Trump doubles down on the claim vandals damaged the reflecting pool in D.C. Trump writing on social media that he disagrees with U.S. Attorney Janine Piro, that damage was caused by a botched renovation.

The post comes a day after the Justice Department announced it was dropping the criminal case against a former Olympian who had been accused of vandalizing the landmark. Wille County is pulling the plug on mugshots online, why the sheriff's office is changing the policy. Plus, some luxurious student housing, the new apartment complex that opened this week

near the NC State campus. And later, The Devil Wears Product, too. A look at how the sequel differs and also pays homage to the original. But first, good morning, Steve. Had some of the rain lifting through early this morning with some heavy downpour. Right now not a lot going on. Little spotty showers around here and there with some heavier rain that's pushing up now into Virginia. Do you have lots of dry time today if you're heading out to the lake, just be weather aware. There'll be some thunderstorms that develop later in the day and the coverage is going to be in that 30 to 50 percent range.

Wide spread upper 70s now, but we got some 80s now showing up down in the sand hills and rather humid. Bulls in action and finishing their series there with the strippers. So from the northeast all the way down to Florida, showers and thunderstorms for today.

Hot out west, look at Denver, over 100 degrees today. And this is an area that has a level one and a level two out of four risk of getting some flash flooding with some of the heavier downpours. Officials say the policy will prevent outdated booking photos from staying online and possibly impacting people who have cleared or expunged records. We're back now with a sad update in the search for missing Western North Carolina woman. The Katawa County Sheriff's Office says the body of 58-year-old Robin Doyle of Hickory was found Friday afternoon after she was reported missing earlier this week. Police have arrested and charged a registered sex offender in connection with her

disappearance. Investigators have not shared the cause of death. And today marks one year since 10-year-old Wake County girl was tragically killed in a boating accident on Harris Lake. Brooklyn Carroll died last August 2nd when an alleged drunk boater hit her in the water. She was a rising fifth grader at Westlake Elementary of School in Apex. And Jennifer Steele, a Wake County school social worker, was severely injured in the crash. But she survived. Two people are facing charges the accident. Coming up on September 28th, the inaugural Brooklyn May Carol Invitational will be held at McGregor Downs Country Club in Kerry. The proceeds from the fundraiser will help launch a waterway trauma station initiative as well as support scholarships and safe and sober boating programs.

The Brooklyn May Carroll Foundation has partnered with NC Wildlife to install 100 designated sober captain size at public boat ramps across the state. And new this morning, American Airlines implements a more restrictive refund policy. It centers around trips canceled within 24 hours of booking. American will now only offer the full refund if the flight is over a week away, down from two days before. The new policy took effect Wednesday and matches the refund policies from Southwest, JetBlue, and United Airlines.

Older Americans spend a lifetime building their savings, but many become the victim of scams. The FBI says losses average nearly $40,000. ABC's Michelle Franzen has tips to spot red flags and protect your money. The numbers are staggering. According to the FBI's Internet Complaint Center, Americans 60 and older, lost nearly $8 billion to scams last year.

Fraudsters are after the large amounts of money older Americans may have access to through investment accounts and home equity. Since the pandemic, more seniors have turned to social media to stay connected to family and friends, making them more vulnerable to scammers who use personal information they shared online

to gain their trust. According to fraud prevention experts, Rodney War with Wells Fargo. With the help of AI, deep fake calls and text messages can be generated by software applications known as bots. They can do a thousand per minute. They make things way more credible and convincing. War says gold and cash courier scams are popular now.

Because they will call them and say, hey, we're with Wells Fargo, you know, there's some investigation going on, or there's some concerns regarding your account. We really need you to take all your money and put it into gold. And they will send couriers to the client's home to pick up the money. Experts say sometimes it's someone impersonating your bank offering to pick up your debit card.

They'll ask for your pin, giving them full access to your account. Fraud specialists also want to warn consumers about perpetrators using fake apps and websites to steal personal data. Bottom line, do not trust any unsolicited calls, texts, or email messages. If you receive these communications, go directly to the institutions, website to verify information rather than clicking on provided links. Michelle Franzen, ABC News, New York. Well, this morning, Hollywood is mourning the death of actor Vincent Pastore. He's best known for his role as one of Tony Sopranos, closest friends on the Sopranos. His manager says Pestory was found dead in his home. A cause of death has not been revealed. The story was 80 years old. Well, here's a live

look at Ritesville Beach. Earlier this morning, we saw that beautiful sunrise. It looks still beautiful out there, but we see a lot of clouds. I mean, Steve, we know that we're tracking some severe weather, too. Yeah, the potential, yeah, absolutely. The potential is there. For a stronger storm later today, they got, looks pretty good at the beaches right now. We're overcast at this point in time, had some rain early on. Might be damped a few communities early this morning. A few strong storms to be with us later in the day, but periods of rain this afternoon into the evening hours and keep that umbrella handy. The next few days is we're going to be rather unsettled. And later in the week the chances go down significantly not zero there could still be a few showers around but

i've got us at a one and three chance for thursday and friday but until then the upper level pattern plus the surface front kind of favorable to get these showers of thunderstorms we have a lot of moisture and it's in place right now in the atmosphere we call this precipitable water this graphic notice how it shifts to the east as we go throughout the day tomorrow and then it kind of pushes back a little bit so as we get into tuesday and wednesday we'll keep those showers that thunderstorms going in the forecast and it could tap into some heavier down for us. Not much action right now, but later today, expect to get some more thunderstorms developing,

that heavy shower lifting to the north. Chatham County getting a couple of showers out there and a few here and there, but this is from Clarksville pushing up into Chase City. Percent County though had some decent rain early this morning. We'll keep the risk going as we go through the afternoon of a shower thunderstorm and numbers in the mid 80s. Should be cloudy most of the day.

If we get any breaks in those clouds and some sunshine, it can aid and destestown. the atmosphere and really give us some more thunderstorms as we get going later this afternoon. Right now we're looking at 79 degrees and cloudy out there. It's a few degrees cooler than yesterday. Dewpoint is really high at 76, widespread mid to upper 70s, a few low 80s out there as well. But look at these dew points, 76 dew point at Rocky Mount Wilson, 79 in Roanoke Rapids, and we've got due points right around 76 degrees. That is high. So as we go through the evening, there's a risk of a shower, thunderstorm, not a guarantee. You see the probabilities there, but they're there.

Nonetheless, if you're heading out, have an umbrella just in case. As we go into our Tuesday scattered showers and thunderstorm continue with that stall front, kind of meanders around a little bit, lingers as we go into our Wednesday. So more showers of thunderstorms in the forecast, although it's still going to be rather hit and miss. Up in the mountains today, again, we're going to have some showers and thunderstorms up there. The beaches will likely have it as well with temperatures in the mid 80s. Could be a little breezy at times, but not a while. out any one location across the state for today. Numbers in the 80s. Watch for some of those hit or miss thunderstorms this afternoon into the evening hours and lows and most spots are going to be in the 70s again. First start seven day then. Eighty-seven on our Monday have lowered the storm chance a little bit. And then with that front nearby as we go into Tuesday and Wednesday will still be rather active. More than 55,000 Marvel-themed products sold at theaters have been recalled due to concerns with their batteries. The Captain America Popcorn Helmet Bucket, and Fantastic Four Cups had LED lights that used button, sell, and coin batteries, which can be swallowed by children. An American Idol has been renewed for its 25th season, and auditions start in less than a month. The hit ABC show is embarking on a nationwide hunt for the next American Idol, virtual auditions for people here in North Carolina or on September 16th.
