This is ABC 11 eyewitness news. Good morning, Carolina. I'm Bianca Holman. It's Saturday, August 8th, this morning on eyewitness news, saying goodbye today to a fallen hero. The funeral service for Fort Bragg soldier killed in Iraq. Plus why investigators believe the shooting death of a husband and his wife was a murder of suicide. and the former Miss North Carolina breaking her silence after being stripped of her title. Right now here at 9 o'clock, let's go ahead and take a live look at the Raleigh skyline, and it's already almost 80 degrees, Steve. It is a warm one out there.

Yeah, it actually feels like over 80 with the humidity. So, yeah, it can be hot summer day for you. Yeah, of course. As we get out going out the door this morning. Still some clouds out there as we look downtown, but again, it's sticky out there. Those dew points are going to be elevated as we go throughout the day today, likely getting up around 93 for the high temperature. And again, I can't rule out an isolated shower, thunderstorm later in the afternoon.

Yesterday we're 92, so it's going to feel very similar to that. Thank goodness, nowhere near the record at 102 degrees. And you see the rainfall deficit are starting to grow once again for the month. We had storms yesterday with the sea breeze. It was mainly south. Didn't get anything farther to the north. I think today that's our opportunity, especially in the north of the triangle, getting a few storms.

We've had three days of measurable rain for the first week, which is good. but not that impressive as far as amounts. That's why our deficit for the month continues to grow. After an incredible July that we had, we don't want to get back to some old bad habits and going below average, but that's the way it's trending right now. Those splash pads could be popular.

Look at the feels like temperature as close to 100 as we go through the afternoon. We'll keep that risk of an isolated shower thunderstorm going later on. Our in-house model bit bullish on some isolated storms, mainly north and off to the west. We'll see if a couple of those could make it to the triangle later on this evening. I will mention our in-house model a little bit bullish compared to other high-resolution data. 79 but feels like 82. The dew point at 74. It's sticky out there. Widespread 70s across the board with 81 now in southern pines and Fayetteau currently at 80.

Evening walk is going to be rather sultry out there with temperatures falling to the low 80s. You could get caught in a shower or a thunder shower later on this evening. A lot of heat coming this next week. More on that in just a few minutes. Bianca. See in a moment, Stephen, as we prepare for that dangerous heat, White County, reopening its cooling stations. Well, happening today, a celebration of life honoring Sergeant Michael Swinton. The Fort Bragg soldier killed disarming an Iranian drone in Iraq. A viewing and funeral service will be held. today at Southview Baptist Church in Hope Mills. The 30-year-old leaves behind a wife, six-year-old son, a four-year-old daughter. Sergeant Swinton was born and raised in Fayetteville, and he served more than a decade in the military. Well, now to breaking news on Capitol Hill this morning. Within the last few hours, the U.S. Senate voting to confirm Todd Blanche as the next U.S. Attorney General.

Blanche, President Trump's former personal attorney came under fire over his role in the creation of an anti-weaponization fund meant to benefit Trump's political allies as well as for not releasing any of the, all of the Epstein files. And so the Senate voted 50 to 49 to approve him with two GOP Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski joining Democrats in voting against the nomination. Well, this morning the dethroned Miss North Carolina USA, Britney Bolton House is breaking her silence after losing her title. The Miss USA organization announced Thursday. They strip Bolton House of her title as Miss North Carolina USA. after reports of problematic past social media posts emerge.

The organization said the decision was based on conduct that happened over an exterior period of time and that it was made jointly with Bolton House. Now, she broke her silence yesterday in an exclusive interview with Carolina Journal. She claimed her Miss North Carolina title was taken from her due to her conservative Christian beliefs. She went on to say she is a proud Mormon woman and won't compromise her faith. I believe and think I was stripped from my title because of my, my political stance and my belief system as a conservative Christian woman. Okay, tell me more about that.

I had a chance to see your... Bolton House said losing the title was a huge shock, but it also may have been, quote, a blessing in disguise, adding every teenager has made mistakes. We're following a developing story in Edgecombe County. A man is dead after deputies say he was caught stealing from a home and then pointed a rifle at a deputy. Jopper 11 flying over the scene Friday as the FBI responded to the home.

We know deputies responded to the home after calls and reports of a theft. So here's a map of where this all happened in the 10,000 block of NC 43 north between Rocky Mountain Pinetops. According to authorities, when deputy has arrived on scene and the suspect aimed a rifle at a deputy who then fired at him. The suspect went back into the home, still armed with the rifle. Deputies took cover outside. The special response team arrived on scene and entered the home and found the suspect dead. The FBI is now investigating this incident. incident. Well, in the time now 904, now is an investigation happening in Franklin County. It

appears to have been a murder suicide with a husband killing his wife. Officers responded to Sunlight Cove in the Lake Royal community around 930 Friday morning, but investigators believe the shooting happened Thursday night. Chopper 11 video shows crime scene tape surrounding the property and a white tent in the driveway. Police say the couple's child, a boy under the age of 10 was found inside the home he's now in DSS custody. These types of calls are never easy, especially when there are minors involved. So I and my officers will be the most professional and compassionate we can be. The husband is the suspect in this case and the wife is the victim.

So that's kind of where we're at right now. The police say the husband was a Navy veteran. Relatives are traveling to take care of the child. the investigation continues. Officials have not said what led to this shooting. Police say there's no threat to the public. Well new developments in the death of Nolan Wells, the Mississippi teen who was found dead after a boating trip with friends.

Got some clouds out there off in the distance. North Hills. Temperatures in the upper 70s to right around 80 degrees fairly uniform and sticky. We're going to get to the 90s today. Watch for a few late day storms, mainly off to our north and west. More heat this week, too. All the details after the break. This is first alert weather from ABC 11 eyewitness news. Good morning, everyone. Welcome to the weekend. It's a hot one. Temperatures in the 90s. Watch for an isolated shower, thunderstorm, mainly north and west of the triangle later today. There'll be a few of them around, but a lot of us are going to miss out in any rain and just dealing with the heat and the humidity a lot like yesterday.

Now, there is some rain down the south right now. That could make it into South Carolina, but this is likely going to miss our coastline, just in case you were planning on heading down to some of the southern beaches today. Out on the lake, we'll get to the 90s, but feels like temperatures flirting with 100 degrees. We'll keep an eye to the sky for an isolated shower, thunderstorm. Again, better chances off to our north and west. Near 80 already, but it feels like over 80 with that 2.7 is 74. It's sticky. out there this morning. Wide spread up for 70s to around 80 degrees with Southern Pines at 81 at this hour. Head now this evening, maybe you're going downtown to watch Stephen Wilson Jr. 86, the start time at Red Hat, getting down to 79 when you head home. Rather sultry, there could be a shower, a thunderstorm that moves on by or at least close by. We'll keep an eye on that for you. East Coast is a bit unsettled through the Tennessee Valley

with scattered showers and thunderstorms. Big heat out west. Look at Dallas at 99, Denver at 100. Of course, all the fires causing quite a bit of smoke. This is aloft. But again, if you're heading to Kansas City or Chicago or Denver, might have some issues with some of that smoke out there. So far, all the major hubs, though, looking pretty good. It's the start of a new school here at Shaw University in Raleigh, alumni of the HVCU were on hand yesterday supporting the class of 2030 as the freshmen moved into their dorm rooms.

Now returning students get back to campus beginning Monday. And last semester, you may remember there was a fire at Dimple Newsom Living and Learning Center and it displaced students there. The dorm remains close this year. Move-in day is also set for the next week at other local colleges, UMNC Chapel Hill, Fayetteville State University will begin welcoming students back next Wednesday. Move it begins at North Carolina Central and NC State University starting the next day on August 13th. And first-year students at Duke will arrive on campus next Saturday, August 15th, followed by upperclassmen the week later.

Well, as college students head back to campus, move-in day, it brings a lot more than excitement. but it comes with a growing list of expenses. ABC's Christine Cordero takes a look at the rising cost of starting the fall semester. Moving to college is a major milestone, but for most families, it's also one of the biggest financial hurdles of the year. From tuition to meal plans, tech, transportation, and dorm essentials, the cost of getting a student settled can add up fast. And for many, the dorm room has become more than a place to sleep.

In today's day and age, it includes decorations and personalizations. We are decking out dorm rooms, left and right. Interior stylist Ebony Staten started nonprofit the Vogue Room Foundation to help first-generation minority college students offset the high cost of decorating their dorm rooms. When I first started in 2018, the average cost of a dorm room space then was $1,500. Eight years, fast forward now, it has doubled. I mean, parents are spending like $3,000 to up to $20,000 on. dorm room spaces. Her foundation covers more than the basics, providing peel and stick wallpaper,

headboards, bed skirts, neon signs, and other items that help students make a dorm feel like a home. For single mom, Ashley Sharpley, whose daughter is headed to the University of Alabama, affording move-in day meant taking extra shifts at her health care job. She says there's a lot of pressure on parents. Well, how am I going to make this work? Because I don't want her to feel like the underprivileged child, you know? One of her money-saving tactics by second-hand. hand. When colleges were wrapping up the spring semester, she started searching platforms like Facebook Marketplace for students getting rid of dorm decor and essentials. I mean, some of these parents were spending like thousands of dollars on custom drapes and, you know, custom hutches and

everything's customized and monogrammed and things like that, but then once they don't need it, they give it away for like nothing. For big ticket items sharply says she turned to her friends and family to help raise money for her daughter's laptop. I was really grateful for that because my community paid for that. Christy on Cordero, ABC News. And having a day, Raleigh Native and former NBA star John Wall returning home, helping families gear up for back to school.

While hosting his annual family reunion back to school giveaway, it runs today from 10 to 230 at Robert Park's Community Center. For the time now on 917, here goes a look out at the beach. Some folks, oh, wow, it's a crowd out there enjoying the remaining weeks of summer before heading back to school or to drop off their co-ed on campus, Steve.

Yeah, looks good out there, right? And today is the day to be out there. It's going to be nice. Yeah, rip for a danger is elevated to moderate. But other than that, going to be a really nice beach day. So I've got a couple of clouds out there. At this time, we'll see partly cloudy to partly sunny skies today. A stray isolated storm over the weekend.

But it's really going to be a typical hot summer weekend. Head out to the pool, the lake, just whatever. It's going to be rather humid, though. And feels like temperatures could be over 100 for the entire work week coming up Monday all the way through Friday. Quick check on the tropics. It's still quiet out there. There is a lot of Saharan dust moving across the main development region here. That coupled with, of course, the wind shear makes it really difficult for storms to get going.

This time of year in August, we see development along our coast and also down in the main development region. And that explodes as we get into September as we get in on the peak of the season. So far, we've only had two named storms. The third name storm on average, though, believe it or not, is typically early August. So we're a little bit behind, but not that far behind. But keep in mind, too, that we do expect to see a below average season. Rain chances can be pretty low over the coming days. I've upped it a little bit for tomorrow.

That's mainly triangle north and west. And again, Wednesday and again on Friday. But none of those days, it's in the likely category. So low rain chances and a lot of. of heat coming our way. Showers and thunderstorms are making their way into the South Carolina coast, likely not going to make it to ours if you have plans to head out to the beach. You should be fine. Or around here hit the pool. 90s not that bad, but the humidity stays so high that feels like temperature could be up around 100 today and will keep that risk of an isolated shower, thunderstorm going.

Our in-house model, little bullish on a few storms trying to develop late into the afternoon, but not a whole heck of a lot. Again, the coverage is going to be pretty low as we go throughout the day today. 29 into North Hills right now a breeze about 10 miles an hour. Most of us really close to that 80 degree mark, fairly uniform temperatures, but again, high dew points. So it's sticky. It'll be sticky through the evening, maybe an isolated shower or thunderstorm around. Temperatures only 80 by 10 o'clock in the evening. So it's going to be one of those evening.

As we look ahead, 94 on our Monday, the sea breeze will kick off a shower, a thunderstorm. We'll get that Leaside trough trying to come in to bring a few storms around as well late Tuesday, but feels like temperatures could be up there close to advisory criteria. Beaches today and tomorrow looking pretty darn good if you're heading out on that direction. Rip current danger though is moderate. Highs will be in the low 90s, maybe mid 90s in a couple of spots. Feels like way up there close to 100 degrees. Isolated shower, thunderstorm better chances off to our north and west and even that,

only 30%. Then as we go into this evening with the exception of a stray evening storm, partly cloudy, warm and muggy. those temperatures are going to begin the 70s again. First or seven, they have up to a little bit tomorrow for an isolated shower, thunderstorm. But you look at all those mid 90s that are coming our way. Wednesday evening could get a storm, same thing on Friday. But this is a low range of hands week coming up and a lot of heat.

The average is 90, which is falling to 89. But look at all those numbers. Bianca, and most of these days it feels like temperatures, few degrees over 100. Good morning, Carolina. It's Saturday, August 8th. I'm Bianco. And you're watching eyewitness news right now on ABC 11 and wherever you stream. The top stories in all the day's news is just ahead. But first, we got to check in with meteorologist Steve Stewart. as we start our weekend. It's already a warm one as expected. It's summer. It is. Yeah. I mean, listen, a little bit above average. The difference is, and this happens a lot. We get to Bermuda high. It just pulls that moisture in off the Atlantic. So the humidity stays elevated. This is the weather that you wear on you. You can feel it. Yeah, yeah, it is. A lot of times, especially recently with the drought that we had, the afternoons, the dew points really come down. So it's not that terrible. Dew points are going to stay elevated in the 70s. So that 93 is likely going to feel like, closer to 100, just like the last few days.

We're kind of stuck in this summer pattern now. And an isolated thunderstorm can't be ruled out later today. 102 is a record high. Thank goodness we're not talking about that. And we do see our deficit increasing. Yesterday thunderstorm activity to the south was mainly from the sea breeze. We didn't get much anywhere else. I think today the opportunity is there around the triangle

and points north and west of getting an isolated shower. Thunderstorm three days the first week of getting rain. Okay, but the amounts are pretty anemic. So we need to get a little bit better on that. That July, we're not going to repeat that where we have a surplus of over seven inches. And you can see that deficit starting to grow again. We don't like to see that. Those splash pads are pretty popular to beat the heat today.

Those numbers feels like numbers anyway, getting up close to 100 for a few hours. Nothing we have to worry about as far as advisories or anything like that. We'll watch and see if we get a few thunderstorms developing and see if that can hold together later on. But again, it's going to be isolated. Out and about there right now, 79 degrees. We got some clouds around. Feels like 82 of that 2.74. That is high.

81 Lewisburg, 80 Sanford, Fayville, also at 80 and a 79 down in Clinton. Evening plans if you're taking the pup out for a walk. We'll get down to the low 80s by late evening hours. Again, can't rule out an isolated shower or a thunderstorm. A lot of heat this coming work week. More on that coming up in just a few minutes. All right. See in a moment, Steve.

Well, new this morning, new developments in the Nolan Wells' death investigation. He's the 18-year-old who disappeared more than a month ago while on a. a boating trip with friends in Mississippi. Two of his friends returned to Horn Island where the college football star vanished 4th of July weekend. His body was found two days later. Attorneys for the friends say the purpose of the trip is to understand the layout and dynamics of Horn Island, but stress they won't be collecting or gathering evidence during the visit. New details in the disappearance of a carrier woman who vanished while on vacation in the Caribbean.

Her husband now says his wife likely drowned. Liz Waddell vanished on July 22nd while swimming in the ocean in Greno. Nita and a written update. Her husband said based on everything we know, it seems drowning may be the most likely scenario. But he added, a lot doesn't make sense. Liz's husband says investigators have now have found no evidence that she intended to disappear. He says her journals describe plans for a future with him and their daughter. And we're learning about the Wake County woman killed in an early morning fire this week in Roseville. An online fundraiser has identified her as Amy Cam. She was married in a mother of three children. She died and this house fire you can see here from footage on Wednesday morning. She was the only person inside the house on Willow Tower Court at the time of the fire. Investigators with the fire marshal's office and state agencies are working to determine what caused the fire. Now to an I-Team investigation, a property in Orange County meant for a church gets sold without the owner of that property even knowing about the sale. The FBI now issuing an alert about this scam as troubleshooter Diane Wilson tells us.

us. Thankfully, this property owner caught it before it was too late. This is property my father purchased back in the 60s for a small sanctuary to be placed in this community. For decades, this land in Orange County has represented a dream. Timothy Pepper says his father brought the property of the 1960s for what would become the new home of West St. Mark Church of Christ in Chapel Hill. Ever since 2005, we've been working on developing it to actually build the sanctuary here. But earlier this year, All that work came to a halt after this letter arrived in the mail from a law firm, claiming they were hired to handle the sale of Pepper's property. It's just the shock and not knowing what to do next and the panic that you go through when you find out.

After contacting the attorney who sent the letter, Pepper says he found out his property meant for the church was sold without his knowledge. This is a purchase agreement where it states the property was sold for $110,000. on April 17th. This deed filed at the Orange County Register of Deeds Office confirms the sale. When Peppers took a close look at the purchase agreement. That's not my signature. Does my mother's deceased? Despite being deceased since 2021, you can see a signature on the purchase agreement claiming to be Pepper's mom, Molly Peppers. I reached out to the attorney who handled the purchase agreement and they confirmed it was a fraudulent sale and that their client was scanned by someone claiming to be Peppers, and their law firm was working to

redeed the property back in Pepper's name, which did eventually happen. Thinking about how big or mess it would have been, had we gone through the permitting process, ready to build, and someone walk up and say they own the property. Thankfully, that did not happen. As a Pepper still owned the property and planned for building the church, move forward. This would actually be the parking lot here and the church was set further back on the lot. He says he's sharing his story to make others aware of this property scam. I think we need to keep raising the flag until people kind of have a sense that that that's what they need to do.

Always check. Always check. Diane also tells us the property scam is growing as the FBI puts out an alert about this identity theft scam where criminals impersonate the owners of a vacant. property and attempt to illegally sell it without the owner's consent. To protect yourself, sign up for fraud alerts online with your county register of deeds office. Well, it won't stop the fraudulent sale. It will alert you to any activity involving the deed on any property you own. In Durham, it's almost tax time. Property tax bills will be sent out on Monday.

You can also view your 26 tax bill online. You can pay by mail, online, phone, or in person at the office on East Main Street. This year's taxes are due September 1st. They can also be paid online without penalty through January 5th of next year. Your property tax bill might be a little bit higher this year. County Commissioner has approved 2.5 cent increased as part of the latest budget. Free dental care being offered for children in need. Find out where the event is happening today.

Watch for a late-day isolated shower, thunderstorm, mainly north and west of the triangle. Got some showers now moving on the coast of South Carolina. likely not going to make it to our beaches if you have plans to head out there. Going to the lake, those low 90s, again, feels like upper 90s near 100. We'll keep a low-wind risk in an isolated pop-up shower, thunderstorm, even if it happens. It's not going to ruin the day. It might only last for 30 minutes or so. 79 into North Hills.

The dew point at 74. It's really sticky out there. Wide spread numbers near that 80 degree mark with 81 now in Smithfield, Irwin and Goldsboro's at 82, and it feels like closer to 90. Also happening today, the Powerball, Powerball jackpot has skyrocketed to $856 million. That's after no one. and matched all six numbers on Wednesday's drawing. Now this is the biggest lottery prize of 2026 so far. The $856 million jackpot equates to a cash prize of $372 million if the winner takes the one-time payment option before taxes. The next Powerball drawing is tonight at 11 p.m. Well, former Carolina Panthers legend, Luke Keekeley is today. He is receiving one of the highest honors for NFL players.

or not your average gummy candy and it's definitely not for the kiddos all right all my adults listen up grown-up gummies is our today North Carolina made segment mermaid tails dinosaurs ducks they don't look like your typical gummy candy and they're not not just on the outside but what's inside these gummies are made with wine I saw a special on Pinterest about wine gummies and I like my wine and I like gummy bears so I tried that recipe and it was terrible so I think thought there has to be a way to make this taste good. But it was not easy. It took this Onslow County couple, Tracy Morgan and her husband, Sean, months to get it right. It took us about a year, and we'd make two to three batches a month, and they'd fell. We finally came across the recipe we use

now. They call them grown-up gummies, first giving them as Christmas gifts to friends. And they were just blown away, and they thought, you guys have got to find a way to make this legal, to sell this. And in 2018, working with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture, they did. You hear them saying grown-up gummies. That's the first thing that draws them over. And then, of course, because of the name, they come over and they're very interested in what makes them grown-up. It's just been a real big success. You can find grown-up gummies on Facebook at festivals and in five retailers, including this beautiful made-in-N-C store in downtown Newburn. Everything you see here is made in North Carolina. It's a good mix of both. Being downtown

New Bern, we definitely get a lot of traveling, people coming through, looking for those interested. unique items made here. It has its own unique flavor and you can definitely taste that essence of the wine. A lot of people tell us that it's their happy product. It's what they go to whenever they just kind of need a boost and lift. We have sharks, we have octopus, we have race cars, probably what, 150 to 200 different shapes that we have in these bags. The Johnson County Little League, 12 you softball team headed to the World Series semifinals. They beat Florida 5-2 Thursday in Greenville. Happening today, legendary Carolina Panthers linebacker, Luke Keekley, officially being inducted into the Pro Hall of Fame. Keekeley, getting his gold job. jacket last night from another legend, Julius Pepper, is with his parents, grandparents, and brothers all in attendance. And during his career, he made more than 100 tackles, all eight of his NFL seasons. That's a lot. Geekley was part of the Carolina Panthers Super Bowl team 2015 with former teammates, quarterback Cam Newton, Greg Olson, and coach John Rivera. So here's a look right now at the NC State Bell Tower in Raleigh. They're getting ready to welcome some co-eds

back to campus in the coming week, Steve. Yeah. A one. One form. Is that time already? It is. It goes back quick. Summer flew by. It did. And it's really going to feel like summer as we go throughout the week with temperatures above average.

Humidity is going to be high as well. So it's going to be a typical hot summer weekend, stray isolated storm. That's not the headline that feels like temperatures are going to be in the high 90s to near 100. And more heat next week feels like numbers most days should be over 100 degrees for at least a few hours. Couple days could be flirting with heat advisory criteria. Quick check on the tropics. on the tropics quiet for now. We still have plenty of Saharan dust moving across the main development region. That couple with wind shear makes it really difficult for storms to get going. Typically this time of year we start seeing action along our coastline and also in the main development region as well.

And of course next month it explodes with our typical that's where our peak is in September. The normal third storm on an average season is about August 3rd. So we're a little bit behind that. But with that said, we still expect a below average season. Rain chances over the course of the next week. Few storms around tomorrow, Triangle, North and West, and again on Wednesday and again on Friday, but none of these days that's in the likely category. The big theme here is going to be heat. We do have some rain and some thunderstorms down here across South Carolina. That's likely not going to make it to our beaches. So if you're heading there today, I think you'll be fine. Staying here to beat the heat. Again, low 90s does not that bad this time of year, but the humidity stays elevated all day. So feels like numbers are going to be up close to 100. We're not in advisory.

criteria or anything like that, but some heat for sure. Isolated storms now popping up late in the day. Our model now pulling back a little bit, kind of in line with the other high resolution guidance. So we'll keep it a low end risk north and west of getting a storm today. 79 into North Hills. A dew point 74 feels like the 80s already. 78 rather in Oxford, 81 there in Roxburgh and Sanford and Clinton also at 81 degrees. That evening after dinner walk is going to be pretty hot.

Again, feels like temperature is higher than these numbers. 8 o'clock, 83. Again, we can't rule out an isolated shower. A thunderstorm. It's a definite possibility. As we go into Monday, 94, the sea breeze will kick off a shower storm. That looks a little bit impressive, but it won't be. 96 later in the day on Tuesday.

Feels like temperature is getting up there close to advisory criteria, and we stay elevated with that temperature for days. Really nice that the beaches, if you want to head out there, that sea breeze will feel pretty good. Rip current danger, though, is moderate to. for today. We're going to be in the 90s, low 90s, again, a few degrees above average, but really humid out there. Best opportunity for an isolated shower, thunderstorm is going to be off to our north and west. And then for tonight, with the exception of a stray evening storm, partly cloudy, warm, muggy will be in the 70s.

First or seven day, I got a little bump up in the coverage tomorrow, but not much. 94 degrees. And look at all these mid-90s that we have to deal with where it feels like temperatures could be over 100. Wednesday evening, maybe a storm again on Friday. as well, but the chances are not that impressive. It's really not the story. The story has a lot of heat coming our way over the next seven days.
