Right now, live coverage from your local news leader, breaking stories from overnight and this morning, and your first alert forecast.
Here's what's happening where you live. This is ABC 11 eyewitness news.
9 a.m. back on the air on this first alert day. It's Sunday morning, Carolina. I'm Joel Brown.
And I'm Anna Rivera, and it is a first alert day. Now at 9 o'clock, we are tracking the winter storm impacts in our area.
We have live team coverage across the viewing area to bring you updates on the road conditions as the day progressing.
We have our Tamara Scott in Raleigh, Penelope Lopez in Fayetteville, and Akela Davis in Durham with the storm chaser.
And now Diane Wilson, join in the team at 9 o'clock.
It's a big hour.
Here's your winter storm headlines.
Let's run through those.
The snow moving out, the extreme cold, now settling in.
Fridid temperature is going to stick around through much of this day.
And if you are heading out, hoping to get outside, you need to be careful.
Most roads are covered in snow.
We're going to hear from the governor on the state's winter storm recovery plan.
That's expected to happen around 11 o'clock this morning.
We're also going to be watching for school closing announcements for tomorrow.
Right now we've only heard from Wayne County.
They've canceled classes for Monday.
Let's start in the first alert forecast center.
Meteorologist Kualin Murphy.
Raleigh finally got some snow.
Finally getting some snow yesterday.
But we definitely saw more snowfall accumulation east of the triangle and also west of the triangle,
including for Princeville and New Hope both coming in at 10 inches of snow.
Nearly eight inches for Elroy and Glenraven, Roxburgh, six and a half.
Scotland next six inches, along with Silar City and Rocky Mount Goldsboro.
Over five inches, five for Nightdale, Chapel Hill, 3.2, 3 inches in Wake Forest.
In Wake County, in general, one to five inches was the range of snowfall accumulation,
but we did break a daily snowfall record at RD yesterday.
The old record, 1948, 2.5 inches yesterday, almost three inches at 2.8.
The accumulating snow finished for us along the coast, still seeing what's left,
the remnants of the accumulating snow for the outer banks and the sounds,
But we're seeing the clearing sky now.
So more of us getting in on that sunshine right now with the dry conditions and snow-covered roads.
The sunshine will continue to be prominent today, but it's still going to be a very cold day.
And that becomes the main story today.
Here are some of the roads.
I-40 Airport Boulevard.
It's clear where the plows certainly work through this morning and more of that to come.
Of course, be patient, travel slowly on the roads.
We had some feels like temperatures that got close to zero this morning.
We're pretty much out of that window at this point.
But single-digit wind chill values will continue.
for another couple of hours. These are the temperatures right now. 15 to 20 degrees generally.
Single digits for the triangle is your feel if you're heading out. Maybe just to let the dog out
this morning. You'll get that rushing cold gust of wind through the door. Three degrees in Burlington,
five in Fayville, nine in Clinton, 13, the feel in South Hill. Those gusts still ranging from
15 to 25 miles per hour with sustained winds 10 to 20. So bright skies for the most part today
will get to around freezing this afternoon, but quickly fall below freezing after sunset into the
20s and teens tomorrow morning. That's a close.
going to be a concern for tomorrow morning too. So bundle up today. Maybe you're going to enjoy
some time outside with the snowfall. Feels like temperatures, teens and 20s. So dress for those
numbers. Remember, we have slick roads, dangerous travel still with what's on the ground with the
snow and still ice from last weekend for some of you. Black ice potential increases
tonight into tomorrow morning. But this is the best news. We're warming up into the 40s this week.
We'll talk about when to expect those 40s and a little bit of rainfall on the way as well.
That's coming up with meteorologist Steve Stewart. Right now back to you.
903 in the triangle, lots of cities, lots of towns are covered in snow, including the city of Durham.
Yeah, the Bull City definitely still seeing those issues on the road still covered in a lot of spots,
and that's where we find Akela Davis outside of the storm chaser. Good morning.
Hey there, good morning. Listen, bone-chilling temperatures here in the Bull City,
and we're finally getting a better idea of what road conditions look like here along Highway 147.
Not many cars out at this hour and those that are are taking it super easy.
Durham City crews working around the clock to help clear these roads.
The roads aren't the best, but they are drivable.
Plow crews have been pulling 12-hour shifts to make sure the roads are clear.
And we're finally hearing from the city of Durham who tell us the priority is to clear primary and bridge routes as much as possible.
We're also learning because of the extreme cold warning overnight, firefighters have had some cold exposure.
calls. They've also responded to several vehicle crashes. The city reports about four inches of
snow at Fire Station 1 on East Morgan Street. Rescue and ladder trucks are upstaffed and seen
support vehicles include a driver to focus on safe travel while the other person strategizes
call response. So in addition to clearing roads like this one that you're seeing here live,
crews have been blowing driveways for fire and police. So of course that makes it easy for them to
get to those emergencies. Back to you. Yeah, you just saw that driver with the emergency
flashers on letting everyone know I'm going to go slow. I'm going to go slow. Yeah, you have that
one lane of travel there and that's all that's going to be there for a while. The O.T's got some
work to do. So I'm going to get back to the freeway for a while. Akila Davis and Durham
force. Akila, thank you. The winter storm impacting services across the triangle. Today,
Wake County will resume all non-essential services at noon, including libraries, solid waste convenience centers
and parks and reserves.
Raleigh Parks will open at 1 p.m.
in Durham, Go Durham will resume services at 10 a.m.
And all go triangle rides will be delayed until noon.
Okay. Penelope Lopez has been doing a great job all morning long for showing us the scenes
down in Fayetteville out on the streets and on the roads.
She's on the roads now in Breaking News 1 in Fayetteville.
Where are you now, Penelope?
That's right.
We just hopped off of I-95 where we saw that one of the lanes was pretty clean.
And that's thanks to the crews that were out there early morning and the crews that were treating the roads since last week.
We are now on Cedar Creek Road. That's what you're seeing right now.
The road is drivable. However, there is still heavy snow all across the streets here.
So it can be a little tricky and as more cars are driving, we've been noticing more cars on the roads.
they start to pack the snow and that can be dangerous because of the ice underneath.
So that's something to keep in mind when you guys are driving.
If you guys leave your home, it's best to stay home if you can.
Parts of Fayetteville got easily three to four inches of snow.
We're seeing that.
You guys can see that on top of the roofs of the homes there.
And again, just if you can stay home, it's not best to drive in these conditions,
especially if you're new in town.
I know that we have a couple of folks who are not from this area.
So if you don't know how to drive in this weather,
it can be a little tricky.
Yeah, you see a lot of snow on the roads,
but you don't see a lot of people out there right now,
which is always good news.
Yeah, and Fayetteville gets left out of a lot of snow storms.
Not this one, not this one.
Not this one.
They got some white stuff.
Tell me, thank you.
And it is a first alert day as we had to break.
Let's take a live look right now at the road conditions in Roxborough in Person County.
You can see them just really going very slowly over
these snow-covered roads. We know
Person County got a lot of snow, some of the most
in our viewing area. Rossboro never gets left
out of us next. No, no. They are always
included. It's going to snow anywhere. They were like, we are not going to
miss out here. We'll be right back.
Everyone needs help with something.
If investing is your something,
we get it. Cooperators' financial
representatives are here to help with
genuine advice that puts your needs first.
We got you. For all your
holistic investment and life insurance advice
needs, talk to us today.

Segregated funds are administered by Cooperator's Life Insurance Company. Life Insurance is underwritten by Cooperators Life Insurance Company.
All right, 10 minutes past nine, and let's talk to the sheriff of Durham County.
Clarence Burkhead is on the phone with us, I believe. No, he's not. He's on Zoom. He's got his phone in his warm sheriff's hat.
Yeah, braving the cold.
Let me make sure you can hear us.
You can hear us, okay, Sheriff.
I can hear you just fine. Can you hear me?
We can hear you. You look great. I love the sunglasses.
Let me ask you this. We had DOT on the line a couple of hours ago,
and we asked them to compare this storm to last week's storm where it was more ice.
This week it's more snow.
And DOT told us, yeah, they're seeing an increased number of calls because people are going out overconfident
because they say, oh, I can handle snow better than I can handle ice.
And it's not resulting.
Well, it's not having good results.
What are you guys seeing?
Joel and Anna, we're seeing exactly the same thing. People become overconfident. We're on the scene right now. If you can see behind me, we're already called a record to get a car out of the ditch here on Sharon Road in East Durham. So again, it's beautiful to look at. It's not same as ice, but it is still very slippery. And we are encouraging folks to stay at home. And if you have to come out, once again, slow down, slow down, increase your stock.
dropping radius, but just stay home if you can.
Yeah, and I know that, of course, the roads are something we're very focused on,
but are you guys getting any other types of calls for service at this point?
Any other messages to the public this morning?
No, we've been very fortunate and very blessed not to receive a lot of calls, other related calls.
Right now we're dealing with traffic.
No reports of power outages widespread at this moment.
So deputies are out responding to calls and they're taking their time.
But right now it's mostly traffic-related calls.
How are we doing on manpower?
I mean, look, you're the sheriff.
You're out there on the call right now.
I mean, do we have enough staff?
What's happening?
Yeah, Joe, a great question.
We did.
We brought in our additional personnel.
Obviously, there's no school.
It's a weekend.
So we brought in our court staff because, again, this is the weekend.
So we are staffed up and we have the manpower for respond to calls.
calls and continue to serve Durham County residents. Absolutely. Okay, Sheriff. Thank you so much for your
time. And once we get some more details on that crash, we'll definitely stay on top of that as well.
All right. Thank you all. Be safe. Thank you, Sheriff. Okay, now we are going to head to break.
Here's a live look right now at Durham. This is our sky cam in Durham. You can see that it is clear as far
as precipitation, which is good because that's a much different scene than what we saw yesterday.
But lots of snow-covered roads, lots of snow-covered sidewalks.
If you can, stay home and just laying the snow at your house.
We'll be right back.

I was going to say welcome back. Thanks so much for joining us on this special winter storm coverage.
Right now, we have a new face joining us.
You know, we haven't had a chance to see what the conditions are in Kerry.
And when I think Carrie and I think snow, I think Diane Wilson.
Diane Wilson, are you in West Kerry? Whereabouts are you?
Yeah, of course. I don't move much from West Carrie with it snows.
You know, I mean, when you're this old, you say, I'm going to be in carry and they say, okay.
So either the airport or carry, I should say.
But yes, we just arrived here.
We are at Highway 55, and it's what's so interesting to me.
Like, yes, everyone keeps asking me, how are the roads?
The roads are snow covered, but if you can take a look at 55 here, the sun, the sun is our friend.
While I need sunglasses on, look how the sun, I know it's cold, but it is melting away some of that snow.
So that will get to work all day.
But I have seen last night when I got off my shift around 9 on 55 here, they had the plows.
lined up. Everyone always says, why does 55 look so good? There was four of them, two trucks and then two plows,
all four with plow trucks, going down 55 in this system. And it was pretty impressive to see.
So this is one of the major thoroughfares. It goes all the way from carry. I mean, it starts actually Durham
Carey, then Apex Holly Springs. So it is a main traveled road, and they have really tackled this well.
The sun's going to help it today. But I saw, you know, Penelope's cleaning off cars. I thought what Joel asked.
cleaning off random cars. That was great. But we have the same type of snow here where it literally
just flies away. But you can see what the cars here. Try and clean your car off. Oh, they're waving
at me. How you doing? I think I know that person. But clean your cars off, clean your windshield
off because the snow is just going to fly to the person behind you. So at least it's not ice,
but we just got out here. So that's the latest from Carrie. They're snow covered. Let the crews
do their jobs. But I know the kids are going to get out there and just have a lot of fun in the snow.
Hopefully, after it warms up a little bit, if I was a kid, I'd stay in the house right now.
It's a little too cold.
And look, Diane, no one's stopping you from being a little bit more like Penelope Lopez.
There's cars all around you covered in snow.
And it looks like those are all your neighbors around you.
Right.
Don't clean them all.
I need one of those leaf blowers, you know.
I don't have a leaf.
I don't know.
Where did she get a leaf blow?
I was thinking like, where did this come from?
She just carried it with her.
What do you find a leaf flow?
She stays ready.
She stays ready.
Plenty of Home Depot's along Highway 55.
Diane Wilson in West Carrey Forest.
Diane, thank you.
Okay.
Meteorologist.
Whalen Murphy breaking down everything you need to know after this storm has moved off the coast.
Yeah, it's all about the sunshine today, so we saw plenty of that. The low pressure offshore,
here's the last of the snowfall, though, for the outer banks and the sounds. What we're left with is the cold conditions,
of course, snow covered grounds too. This officially, the extreme cold warning for another 42 minutes or so.
Single digit feels like temperatures will linger up until around lunchtime today for some of you,
and we'll start to climb just above that later today. But single digit wind chills still from Mecklenburg County, too.
That's where the cold weather advisory is right now.
The weather service may issue another winter weather advisory later for travel.
They may also issue another cold weather advisory.
Of course, if they do, we'll bring that to you.
But just know it's going to be cold through the day today.
And also, dangerous travel continues as our crews have been showing you since early this morning.
Here's a look at I-40 Airport Boulevard.
If you're heading out, you're just going to take it slowly today.
And you can't drive the speed limit, driving below the speed limit.
Temperatures are on the teens, 20s right now.
feels like temperature is single digits still down to four in Oxford.
Three Burlington around the triangle seven to eight degrees of feel five in Fayville.
And we have to consider snow cover grounds too.
It's going to make it feel colder at times through tonight and tomorrow morning.
Wind gusts out there teens and 20s, especially east and south of the triangle.
So it's going to make these afternoon feels like temperature is going to put those in the 20s.
But back down to 17 by 8 o'clock this evening.
The canes are here to bring us some joy today.
Hopefully with the wind this afternoon.
If you're heading to Lenovo, the game starts at 3 o'clock, temperatures, upper 20s before and after the game with those clear skies.
We had some really gusty winds around.
That's why we saw some snow drift yesterday.
We also saw some gusty winds for the coast, too.
But the highest at Fayetteville was 36 degrees and at Durham, RDU 30 miles per hour.
I should say 30 miles per hour.
At the coast, though, since this morning, 53 miles per hour in Hatteras of some really gusty conditions.
A lot of areas in the country covered with snow right now.
With more on that, here's meteorologist Steve Stewart.
Right.
Isn't that something to see all this area's got snow cover all the way down south of Memphis,
south near Atlanta, all these areas, all of South Carolina, all of North Carolina.
Pretty rare for a storm to bring every single one of our 100 counties got measurable snowfall
yesterday.
Out of the beach, the surf city right now, you can't see it on this camera view, but when the
camera turns, you can see all the beaches are just completely covered in white right now
with the snow.
There's Roxbury.
You see the roads, snow covered there.
They had a range a decent amount.
four six inches of snowfall up there.
Roads though will be snowy for a while,
especially the neighborhoods that got a decent amount of snowfall
that are not treated so it's gonna look like that
for a while, but the storm is exiting and moving on out.
Good sliding the next couple of days as well.
Just make sure the kids are really bundled up.
I know the sun's coming out now and they're itching
to get out there and it have some fun.
Next storm is midweek, mainly a rain event.
Could end as a few flakes though.
As the low is gonna scoot on by here on the back side,
we'll pull in some colder air and maybe squeeze out just a few
flakes but nothing that's measurable. There's a low powerhouse right now still gusty winds out of
the outer banks and we're breezy as well. But as that low pulls away, that pressure gradient
relaxes. So our gusts are going to be coming down later on for today. Clouds are exiting already.
They're moving on out. We'll show you a visible image a little bit later on and you can see
the snowpack that's on the ground. Near 40 tomorrow, we'll get some melting going on. Clouds
really move in as we go into our Tuesday. And then again, the backside of this front will come in after
this low moves on by and whatever moisture is left could end is a few flakes but nothing we're concerned about.
Temperatures in the 30s for highs today. Most of us hard time getting up above freezing.
Going to be a cold one today and that breeze is a biting breeze, especially early on. And then tonight it's cold.
Temperatures in the teens, even low teens, just a little tiny breeze will make it feel like it's in the single digits again.
First alert seven day, groundhog day 39, 46 with clouds on Tuesday. I think Wednesday will get some cold light rain around.
on my dins is a few snowflakes clearing in Chile on Thursday, little milder Friday.
A dry front comes in for the upcoming weekend, so no worry about snow, but it will keep it on the chili side.
Okay, Steve, thanks. So all day yesterday, we were waiting to see the flakes fly.
We were waiting for that snow.
Now the big story, the roads.
Yeah, the roads are, well, depending on where you are, they're a mess.
Yeah.
Not a mess in other areas.
Take a live look right now.
This is 440 and Capitol Boulevard.
You can see these roads are snow covered.
And 440, of course, a huge highway for us.
DOT tells us they will be trying to plow at least one lane in both directions of all of these major highways to try to get traffic moving as best as it can.
But their big message, please stay home so they can get their job done.
We'll be right back.

Somebody knew something and nobody was caught in.
George Pinocchio for on the red carpet.
Lots of stuff to watch.
And as we had to break, here's a live look right now at downtown Raleigh.
The sun is shining, hopefully helping with some of that melting.
Yeah, sun's shining, but not getting a lot of warmth.
But it will help with the melting.
It's a lot of look at Fayetteville's...
Street. At DOT Cruz, Public Works crews in the city, they've done a great job, at least there
on Fayetteville Street, main drag through downtown. They've got some work to do on the side streets,
though, including in downtown. It's going to take some work. But you know what the son will help
with all that salt that's been put down. Yeah, that'll help activate it and kind of get things
down to the pigment. I wouldn't just continues after this.

Sun is all the way up and we've got a lot of melting to do.
Good Sunday morning, Carolina.
I'm Joel Brown.
And I'm Anna Rivera and it is a first alert day.
Now at 9 o'clock, 930, we are tracking the winter storm impacts in our area.
We have live team coverage across the viewing area to bring you updates on the road conditions as the day progresses.
We've got Cindy Bay in Apex and Tom George with conditions down east.
And Trayvon Miles is in Durham.
That sun's up.
Our cruiser awake.
We got reinforcements here for our winter storm coverage.
Good to see you guys.
Stand by for a second.
Let's go through the winter storm headlines first.
The snow now moving out.
The extreme cold now settling in.
Fridid temperatures are going to stick around.
through the day. If you're hoping to get outside today, just be careful. Most roads are covered in snow.
We're going to be watching for school closing announcements as well for tomorrow. So far, only Wayne
County has canceled classes for Monday, but we've got an idea. There's probably guns to be changes
in other school districts as well. Let's get a check. First Alert forecast center at Quailin
Murphy standing by. Quailan Raleigh waited all day yesterday for snow and they finally got some
too. Finally, we were like this. Indeed, the snow did come. It did come in lower totals,
around the triangle in general. But we did have some other areas where the snowfall totals really took off.
And that was Princeville New Hope from Wilson County to Edgecombe 10 inches, over seven inches for Elroy,
Glenraven, areas around Alamans County and Durham County picking up nearly eight inches,
six and a half inches for Roxborough, which got started a bit sooner into Friday night.
Scotland next six inches of snow along with Siler City and Rocky Mount to Goldsboro,
five and a half inches, Nightdale coming in right around Tops for Wake County at five inches of Snow Chapel Hill,
3.23 inches for Wake Forest. We did break a daily rain snowfall record yesterday at
RDU too. The old record was set in 1948 so that was a pretty long-standing
snowfall record of two and a half inches for the day. Yesterday we got 2.8 inches
of snow at RDU. This is our visible satellite imagery here and I did have it rolling
a bit farther back but basically the white areas you see to hear in that cloud
cover that's actually snow still left on the grounds. That snow shower activity is
wrapping up for the outer banks now you can see that clearing line.
extending now into areas closer to I-95.
So you're still looking at clouds near I-95,
but skies will clear for you very soon.
First, alert Dopplernet, nice and clean for you now.
If you take a look at that on ABC11.com or your app,
you'll notice the same thing.
Here's predictor through 11 o'clock.
Again, seeing those clouds starting to slowly move away.
We're going to see clear skies with sunshine through the afternoon.
And we can focus on the cold and focus on the conditions out there on the roads.
To I-40 at Airport Boulevard showing a bit more traffic now picking up at this point,
but a slow go out there with the snow on the grounds.
You have to drive below the speed limit.
Extreme cold warning continues for another 28 minutes officially,
and that's because there was potential for feels like temperatures to drop below zero,
but we didn't quite get there.
These are the actual temperatures now, teens and 20s,
but it feels like zero.
Some of you might think it feels like zero outside.
Two degrees in Oxford, three in Burlington,
so not far above zero.
Ten and Clinton is how it feels nine in Goldsboro,
seven Rocky Mountain Wilson.
So a lot of single digit feels to go around with these gusty winds
too in the 20s for Aries south and east of the triangle.
Sunshine leads the way through the day.
Sunny skies at 4 o'clock.
We're at 31.
I think we'll top out at 32.
So in addition to the sun, that will also help with the melting.
But it stops pretty quickly this evening as skies clear out, temperatures fall below freezing.
Teens for tomorrow morning.
Your first alert that we have cold conditions today, you'll want to bundle up extra layers
if you don't have a heavier coat.
Feels like temperatures teens and 20s this afternoon.
Slic roads, dangerous travel.
That's going to be the story through the start of the week.
with black ice concerns lingering, especially where the snowfall hangs on a bit more.
But we're going to have a lot more melting power this week. Temperatures in the 40s.
So those temperatures really climbing. A shot at some rainfall this week, too, towards midweek.
We'll talk more about that and how it may end up as a few snow flurries coming up in just a few minutes.
Right now, weather and traffic together. Here's Anna.
Well, Quaylin, right now the roads are pretty quiet because we're not really seeing that many too,
that many people out and about. But you see all of this orange and yellow. That doesn't mean we're seeing
congestion. That just shows you how slow people are having to drive because of these snow covered roads. We also have a crash at Perry Creek Road and Lewisburg Road. At this point, it's saying damage only. We're not seeing injuries involved in this, but it was reported by police. So we'll keep an eye on that. Let's also take a live look at the DOT cameras right now. This is I-87-year Hodge Road. So Hodge Road is shut down right now. You see those officials right there at the intersection blocking the road. We saw a crash there earlier this morning, and that's when they got there and blocked that off. So if you
You are going to be in that area. Keep that in mind. It is very slippery. We saw some people trying to get out after getting stuck in there.
Okay, so we just checked in with Diane Wilson. She was in her happy place at Carrie. Typically when we see Cindy Bay in the middle of a winter storm, it's an apex.
But we wanted to get out of her comfort zone. So here is Cindy Bay now in breaking news one. She's on I-87 north heading east toward Tarboro. Okay, you take it from there, Cindy.
Yeah, and thanks for the tip.
And we are being careful on the roads here at I-87.
It's a beautiful day, and let me show you the roads right now.
We are headed east towards Tarboro, and the roads are completely covered with snow.
So it's very difficult to see the lanes right now.
I want to shout out to our photojournalists for driving so safe and keeping us safe in this car.
We are driving slowly, and on our way, we saw a lot of cruise.
already be getting their work to start plowing and clear up some of these roads.
So shout out to them as well.
However, roads are messy.
So if you can stay home, do that.
Enjoy the snow from the backyard of your home.
Meanwhile, we're going to enjoy this snow by doing karaoke to Frozen.
Let it go.
Disney's Frozen.
So, yeah, we're going to, Jeremy has some pipes.
I can tell you that.
Yeah, Elsa definitely paid us a visit.
Let it go.
That was beautiful.
That was beautiful.
Who was she with?
I think she said, Jeremy, Jeremy.
Yeah.
Oh, that tracks.
Yeah, so thank you for that.
We needed that.
We need that little rendition.
Yeah, it was good.
We heard to Jeremy.
Okay, so the roads, of course, are bad.
The brand new video this morning shows crews clearing the snow from the runways at RDU.
And at this hour, one runway is open along with several taxiways.
There are about 75 flights already canceled at RDU this morning.
You will want to check with your airline before you head to the airport.
Yeah.
As you may imagine, the weather is causing some major flight disruptions over at RDEU airport.
You can see right now there are at least 74 flight cancellations and a few delays.
So you want to check with your airline before going to the airport.
For more on that, let's go to the phones.
Jake Potter with REDU communications on the line for us.
I hope. Jake, are you there?
I am. Thanks for having me.
Yeah, good to talk to you. Good to talk to you.
So personal story, Jake.
I was waiting for my wife to fly from RDU or to RDU yesterday from Seattle.
Her flight ended up getting canceled.
She was directed to a new flight today, and she got in.
So I can confirm the airport is definitely open.
Not the case for a lot of folks.
I mean, talk to us about cancellations and delays at this hour.
That's great.
And I'm glad to hear that it ended up with a happy story there.
Yeah, our snow crews have been working around the clock,
including overnight, to keep that airfield open for those airlines that do want
fly today or are able to fly today. Their work actually doesn't stop on the airfield.
They're also making sure that the airport roads in and out of RDU are staying clear as well.
So for those people who are flying today, you know, we please encourage you to drive slowly,
drive carefully, give yourself extra time, you know. So at last check, as we just said,
there was one runway open. Is that still the case right now? What's the status?
Yeah. So our goal, our maintenance team's goal is to keep at least one runway.
open at all times. Obviously, we're not seeing precipitation right now. So they're working to clear
as much of that flat surface across the airport campus as they can. Obviously, the airfield is
probably one of the most important assets we have. We've got to start with the runways and work
backwards. So we have two commercial runways, and one of those will always be open during these
events to the best of our ability. We do have one open now and working to have them both open
so we can get everybody up and flying.
Jake, as I was talking to my wife yesterday, and she's in Seattle, I'm trying to walk her through what to do.
I'm trying to give good answers here and trying to sound smart.
Because, you know, I talk to smart people like you on the line, but I was having a hard time describing what she should do or what she should expect when she gets to the airport.
And I said, look, it's not last week.
It's not ice.
This is snow.
It should be easily removable.
What was it like on the ground with operations and trying to clear the stuff that fell yesterday versus what happened last week?
Sure.
Yeah.
So you kind of mentioned it.
It did look a little different.
The nature of moving snow versus moving ice is a little different for our maintenance team.
And it's a little different for the traveler as well.
No matter what, what we always tell people is to, if you're planning on flying or if you have a flight coming up,
the best place to check is with your airline for that flight status.
We want to make sure that if your flight is happening, that you get here safely and you get where you're going.
if your flight is delayed or canceled for any reason, you know,
check with them for rebooking options and just know that they're working as hard as they can as well
to get you up in the skies.
Jake Potter with the RDU Airport.
Thank you so much for that update.
And thank you so much for all the hard work you guys are doing there to make sure people can get in
and out of RDU.
Sounds good.
Stay warm.
Okay.
You too, Jake.
Thank you.
As we go to break, here's a live look on the streets of Fayetteville.
Think this is Hay Street here.
Hey Street still covered in snow.
some ice as well, but it has been plowed and treated as well, but it's going to take some work
with those nice blue sunsets, those blue skies and the sunshine, activate some of that salt
and get some melting underway. I would as soon as continues after the break.
I was guilty of multiple skin care crimes, two counts of sleeping and makeup, one count of using
disposable wipes. I knew my routine had to change. So I switched to Garnier-Missler water.
It gently cleanses, perfectly removes makeup, and provides 24-hour hydration.
Clear away the evidence with the number one Missler water worldwide by Garnier.
You know what I'm looking on my phone?
To see if we got any viewer pictures?
ABC 11 pictures, because we ask folks to send us your picks and send us your photos, your videos, from the snowstorm.
Yeah, and guess what?
I would as news viewers, they're starting to send in some of those fun moments from the snow.
So, let's take a look.
I've seen them.
Now you can see them.
These dogs in Orange County and join the Whiteout in their business.
backyard this is a girlfriend and Archie they are in Hillsboro and they look very
cute they are cute snow outfits yeah I love their jackets now let's take a look at
some kids in ox in Roxborough this is in person County where the snow started
very early they did not waste any time in Roxborough per usual this little
girl dressed in her pink snow suit and this fluffy snow is perfect for snow angels
big smiles yeah oh look at that love it we're also getting pictures from family
in Hillsborough. You can see those fluffy, the fluffy fluffiness around her, her hood.
Fluffy. What I don't want to say fur because it's, you know, faux fur probably.
All right. You can still say fur. But yeah, she's looking really cute.
Foe fur, but it's still very, very cute. I haven't gotten any pictures of my boys yet, but as soon as we do.
I'm sure those are cute. They're probably four-wheeling. Good stuff. All right, let's go to Alamance County,
the Animal Park at the Conservators Center in Burlington, sharing these photos with us.
Hobbies the tiger, stick to the gray wolf.
Hope I'm pronouncing your name right,
Sikta, the black one.
And then there is Gerald Gray Wolf all out there,
enjoying the snow, good-looking animals.
Yeah, they probably love this.
So we want to see your pictures and your videos.
So just click on the share your photos and videos link
on the ABC11.com homepage.
All right.
Live look outside, road crews driving around in Cumberland.
County roads covered in in in Cumberland right now.
The sandhill saw their share of snow too as well as down east.
Awesome big snow totals out on the coast.
And here in the triangle too, thank goodness.
It all came true.
It all came true.
Yeah, that's gonna help as well as far as some melting.
This stuff has gotta go somewhere.
Not gonna happen.
Anna, when you talk about the rivalry between Duke and UNC,
you talk about Tobacco Road and the Battle of Tobacco Road.
And when I think tobacco road, I think highway,
15501 in Durham between Durham and Chapel Hill.
And then we also think Trayvon Miles.
He'd be there to cover it.
That's exactly where he is.
Okay, so what are you seeing, Trey?
Where are you?
You know what, guys?
That really couldn't have been a better introduction.
I really appreciate that.
Joel said it.
We're on 15501.
We wanted to come here from downtown Durham.
I want to try to get the Chapel Hill,
but on the way, some really, really tough conditions
on this highway.
And I'll show you what we're seeing right now
as people begin the trek to try to try to
dig out of this thing. We just stopped by the new Hope Commons parking lot and just a shopping center
and we're seeing the beginning of this, right? People starting to try to get this snow removed
and start getting digged out of this thing. Stop by a couple of businesses in this shopping center.
None of them are open. There's a GNC here. There's a Barnes & Noble here. Some of them are
supposed to be open on Sunday, but they are not open right now. I actually stopped by a
tea store and they actually have a sign on the door saying that they are closed due to this weather.
So as we transition from the weekend back to the weekday, it looks like maybe everybody
trying to maybe get their hopes set on opening back up maybe tomorrow, but that of course
starts with digging out of this thing and getting these plows and getting the snow away
from here today. Well, if you want to get that GNC back open and that Barnes & Noble back open so
folks can get their creatine in books, you got to get the parking lot.
All the things that you could possibly.
need right there. Trayvon Miles, thank you. And I do want to do a quick update before we toss it over to
meteorologist Quaylon Murphy, Go Triangle, suspending all services for Sunday, February 1st. So we just continue to see these impacts, Kwayland.
We thought that was going to happen, right? 530, they said they were going to try and resume service.
I don't know about that. Yeah, and here we are. Sun came up and they said, you know what, we're not doing it today.
All right, over to the forecast center. Quailan Murphy standing by, she's got the latest.
Yeah, unfortunately, too, I think a lot of schools will be impacted, of course, to start the week as well.
And I know students are probably missing their friends, missing their teachers, but we probably won't be able to get out safely tomorrow morning.
So just be mindful of that and be ready for that too.
Here's our radar on satellite composite.
We have clearing skies right now, snow showers pushing off the coast at this point.
We had upper level support yesterday.
Of course, that initial batch of dry air worked in.
Then that big lobe of vorticity helped to bring us to snowfall with the lift yesterday through the day and through the evening hours of Sunday.
What day is it?
Saturday now until Sunday.
Here's the extreme cold morning until 10 o'clock, so just 10 more minutes officially on this.
But even once that expires, you should be ready for some much colder conditions out there this morning.
The cold weather advisory for Mecklenburg County and Virginia also expires.
Basically, we have feels like temperatures at this point, teens and single digits.
But the improvement continues, and we're seeing a bit more traffic out on I-40 and Airport Boulevard.
This has been a nice gauge for us over the last 24 hours in terms of seeing dry conditions out on the roads.
and then that snow accumulation with limited traffic overall last night and then slowly picking up early this morning.
Temperatures teens and 20s feels like temperatures still single digits for a lot of us and we'll continue pretty much on the colds situation through the afternoon hours wind gusts in the teens and 20s.
So these are it feels like temperature is at 2 o'clock.
It's going to feel like 20. Still 21 at 6. 18 at 8 o'clock.
We have the Keynes playing today. 3 o'clock. The puck drops at Lenovo.
We're 20s on both sides of game time today. Wind gusts picked up definitely yesterday.
near 40 miles per hour in Fayetteville near 30 Roanoke Rapids in Goldsboro at the coast,
where that stronger low pressure was. That's where we saw gust in the 50s. So those were
tropical storm force winds along the coastline late last night and even early this morning.
Still looking at gusts around 40 miles per hour in Kirtuck and Swansboro. With some changes on the
way, we have more on that with meteorologist Steve Stewart showing that snow cover across a lot of
the country, including across our state, all 100 counties, Steve. All of them. Yeah, that's pretty
impressive. We don't see that very often, to be honest with you. Look at all out of the country covered in snow all the way down to Atlanta. All of South Carolina has snowpacked. And of course, we do as well with those big bullseyes just out to our east with some significant snows. Many areas out there picked up a foot or more. Let's take you to surf city right now. Let the camera pan around and you can see all the snow there on the beaches. Of course, the water's got rid of some of that. But look at all that snow. A couple folks out there. I think there's a dog there with him as well. Camera bouncing.
little bit in the wind. You don't see this shot too often to have that much snow out there along the coast. Also R to you the camera moving a little bit with that breeze out there. Been seeing slow going out there at the airport. Lots of cancellations and delays are trying to make that up now as they clear more of those runways. Storm is exiting today. It's gone as it pulls away from us. Snowy roads are going to linger though and especially those neighborhoods that got a decent amount of snow and you don't have the roads treated in there. It's going to be a little while. Good sliding though the next couple of days.
Really cold today. It'll be better this afternoon as the winds are going to calm down a little bit. Just bundle them up and tomorrow should be good too. I'm guessing there's going to be a lot of school and cancellations. Next storm is going to be midweek. Mainly rain event might into some flakes. Nothing we're really concerned about as that low is going to scoot on by. The colder air on the backside might try to end this as a little bit of light snow, but it wouldn't accumulate at all. There's the low off the coast. You see the strong winds there still going on with Gus over 40 miles an hour.
out of the coast. That is pulling away that relaxes that pressure gradient. So our winds will be calming down a bit as the day wears on. The clouds are already gone. They're moving away from us now. And you can see on a visible shot all the snowpack that's out there right now. It's really impressive to see. High pressure well to the south. Gorgeous sunny day. About 39 tomorrow. So we'll get some melting going on. It's just going to be another cold day. Then as we go later in the day, we'll see a lot of clouds moving in on Tuesday. There's the disturbance. There's the cold there that'll come in behind it.
So rain for the most part could in some as some snowflakes.
All right, so your high temperatures today, low to maybe some mid thirties in the sand hills,
but most of us are going to be around that freezing mark or below.
So a cold day today, that wind should calm down a little bit, but more of a biting breeze out there this morning.
And look at the numbers tonight.
Again, very cold temperatures in the lower teens, maybe some middle teens with just a light breeze out there.
This is going to feel like single digits.
So hold on.
It's going to be another cold one early tomorrow morning.
The first alert 70 ground hog day.
Fingers crossed that we get an early spring.
Clouds really thicken up as we go into Tuesday.
Wednesday we'll probably get some showers around.
Could end as a snowflake clearing in chilly on Thursday.
And another front comes in for the weekend,
but this one will be dry just keeping us on the chilly side.
We'll be back right after this.
9.57, if you are an essential worker or someone who has to be on the roads this weekend,
here's some driving tips from the AAA.
First, drive slowly to account for.
lower traction when driving on snow or ice. Be sure to accelerate and decelerate slowly. And remember,
it takes longer to slow down on slick roads. Also, increase your following distance to five to six
seconds. And if possible, keep moving while going up any hills. We got a nice email from one of the
viewers who was pointing out all of the nurses. Yep, who are making the trek into work with all
of these snow-covered roads. So thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
And now let's take a live look at RDU Airport. That camera is shaking. It is windy.
and cold outside and we have just one runway open right now at RDU and lots of cancellations and some delays as well
we'll be right back
